报道用苹果饲养桃小食心虫CarposinaniponensisWalsingham的方法。在温度(25±1)℃、RH60%~70%的条件下,着重研究不同日光照时数对该虫一些主要生物学特性的影响。结果表明:以日光照时数15h为最佳,在上述条件下连续饲养7代未发现退化现象。与人工饲料饲养比较,该法饲养所获得的幼虫历期、幼虫脱果率、蛹重、单雌产卵量及孵化率等指标均有所提高,表明该法具有可行性。  相似文献

Spray-dried whole bovine blood and a sodium polyacrylate polymer gel as a bulking and solidifying agent are among the constituents of the current larval diet for mass rearing screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Locally available, inexpensive dietary materials could reduce rearing cost and address an uncertain commercial supply of spray-dried blood. We compared efficacy of diet prepared from fresh bovine blood after decoagulation with sodium citrate or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or after mechanical defibrination, with the diet containing spray-dried blood using either gel or cellulose fiber as the bulking and solidifying agent. Several life-history parameters were compared among insects reared on each of the blood and bulking agent diets combination. Diets containing citrated blood yielded the lightest larval and pupal weights and fewest pupae. EDTA-treated blood with the gel also caused reductions. EDTA-treated blood with fiber yielded screwworms that were heavier and more numerous than those from the diet with citrated blood but lighter than those from the control diet using spray-dried blood. A reduction in percentage of adults emerging from pupae occurred from diets with both bulking agents using citrated blood and the diet using EDTA mixed with the gel bulking agent. As a group, the cellulose-fiber diets performed better than the gel diets. Larval diet did not affect adult longevity, weight of the eggs deposited by the females that emerged or subsequent egg hatch. Parameter measurements of insects from both defibrinated blood diets were similar to those from the spray-dried blood diets, indicating that fresh, defibrinated bovine blood can successfully replace the dry blood in the screwworm rearing medium.  相似文献

Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), Earias vittella (Fabricius), Spodoptera litura (Fabricius), Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (all Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), and Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) are the major pests of cotton and maize. Mass‐rearing of these insects under controlled conditions is necessary to obtain the numbers needed to conduct bioassays to screen insecticides, proteins, and other compounds, as tools for insect pest management. We present a diet suitable for rearing the six lepidopteran pests (five cotton and one maize pest). We further show that this diet is on par with or superior to the published diet recipes for each of the insect species, which were studied for three generations. We also discuss the advantages of antimicrobials other than formalin for keeping microbial growth under check. A combination of antimicrobial solution and benomyl provided effective control and suppressed the growth of microbes for a longer period than a formalin‐containing diet. A common diet for six pests provide opportunities for automation of diet preparation in addition to improved throughput and consistency in the process, while eliminating diet‐batch related errors.  相似文献

The commercial production of Orius spp. (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae), including Orius majusculus (Reuter), relies on the use of eggs of Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) as rearing diet. However, E. kuehniella eggs have become an expensive fodder thus increasing the price of these key biological control agents. The use of artificial diets potentially decreases the production costs. In this regard, establishing a link between dietary composition and fitness could advance the development of an optimum alternative artificial diet for these predatory insects. The aim of the current study was to test the effect of six artificial diets with different macronutrient composition on the development and reproductive fitness of O. majusculus when compared with the effect of E. kuehniella eggs. In general, nymphal survival was not affected by diet, whereas development was slightly delayed on artificial diets. However, female body mass and fecundity were significantly lower on all of the artificial diets compared with the E. kuehniella eggs diet, suggesting that artificial diets were of inferior quality. Within artificial diets, females fed the viable diet with highest content in lipid laid more eggs than those raised on the most protein-rich diets. We found there was some variation in carcass composition between the O. majusculus fed the various diets, but these variations did not match the differences found in the fitness parameters measured.  相似文献

A highly absorbent cellulose fiber from recycled paper was tested and compared with a polyacrylate gelling agent, Aquatain, normally used for bulking and solidifying larval rearing medium of screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae). The absorbent fiber, when mixed with water and dietary ingredients, produced a diet medium of homogeneous texture that supported larval growth and development comparable with the standard gelled diet. Larval and pupal weights from two concentrations of cellulose fiber-based diet were significantly higher than those obtained using gelled diet. The number of pupae per tray, percentage of adult emergence, oviposition, percentage of egg hatch, and adult longevity obtained from the insects reared in the cellulose fiber-based diet were comparable or slightly better than the biological parameters recorded from flies reared in the gelled diet. Moreover, results indicate that a lesser amount of the cellulose fiber-based diet than the normal amount of gelled diet per tray would support normal larval growth. Physical properties and texture of the new diet seem to allow the larvae to move and feed more freely than they do on the semisolid gelled diet, resulting in less wasted diet. The cellulose fiber is biodegradable and inexpensive, whereas the polyacrylate gel polymer is not biodegradable and is relatively expensive. Replacing gel with cellulose fiber in the screwworm larval diet for mass rearing should result in substantial cost savings in material and labor as well as eliminating concern of environmental pollution due to diet waste disposal.  相似文献

Lythrum salicaria L., purple loosestrife, an invasive Eurasian perennial, is degrading wetlands across temperate North America. Chemical, physical, and mechanical methods failed to provide long-term control. Therefore, four host-specific insect species (two leaf feeders, a root feeder, and a flower feeder) were introduced as biological control agents. To increase the availability of adults of the root feeding weevil Hylobius transversovittatus Goeze for field releases, we developed a semiartificial diet. Suitability of different diet formulations (varying vitamin mixes, salt mixes, antimicrobials, water content, root content) and temperatures for larval development were evaluated. We also monitored how rearing on artificial diet and the number of larvae per container affected larval development time, larval survival, adult weight, and incidences of deformities. Rearing larvae on artificial diet reduced development time from 1-2 yr to 2-3 mo. Larval development was fastest and survival rates highest under constant temperatures of 25 degrees C. Hatch rate and larval survival decreased if eggs were surface sterilized. Using FABCO antimicrobials could not prevent fungal contamination; use of methyl paraben and sorbic acid was successful in suppressing fungal and bacterial growth throughout larval development time to <10%. The moisture content of the diet did not significantly affect larval survival, development, or adult weight. Decreasing the proportion of purple loosestrife roots in the diet reduced adult weight and the proportion of larvae completing development, and increased development time; no larvae were able to complete development in root-free diet. With an increase in the number of larvae per cup, survival rates were reduced. The experiments revealed a female biased sex ratio: females consistently developed faster and were heavier than males. Incidence of adult deformities was consistently below 5%. Increased availability of adults for field release as a result of mass production using the semiartificial diet will accelerate the biocontrol program targeting purple loosestrife. We are able to produce several hundred weevils per week and have adapted the diet to rear other root-feeding weevils.  相似文献

The effects of antimicrobial food additives on growth and ochratoxin A production by Aspergillus sulphureus NRRL 4077 and Penicillium viridicatum NRRL 3711 were investigated. At pH 4.5, growth and toxin production by both A. sulphureus and P. viridicatum were completely inhibited by 0.02% potassium sorbate, 0.067% methyl paraben, 0.0667% methyl paraben, and 0.2% sodium propionate. At pH 5.5, 0.134% potassium sorbate and 0.067% methyl paraben completely inhibited growth and ochratoxin A production by both fungi. Sodium bisulfite at 0.1%, the maximum level tested, was found to inhibit growth of A. sulphureus and P. viridicatum by 45 and 89%, respectively. Toxin production was inhibited by 97 and 99%, respectively. Sodium propionate (0.64%) at pH 5.5 inhibited growth of A. sulphureus and P. viridicatum by 76 and 90%, respectively. Toxin production was inhibited by greater than 99% for each fungus. Antimicrobial agents were ranked as to effectiveness by comparing the level required for complete inhibition of ochratoxin A production to the highest antimicrobial agent level normally used in food. At pH 4.5, the most effective inhibitor of growth and toxin production was potassium sorbate, followed by sodium propionate, methyl paraben, and sodium bisulfite, respectively, for both fungi. However, at pH 5.5, the most effective antimicrobial agents for inhibiting ochratoxin production were methyl paraben and potassium sorbate, followed by sodium propionate. Sodium bisulfite was not highly inhibitory to these toxigenic fungi at the higher pH value tested.  相似文献

A rearing system based on a diet gelled with Water-Lock G-400, a synthetic superabsorbent (poly(2-propenamide-co-2-propenoic acid, sodium salt)) (WL), was compared with the standard rearing system (liquid diet suspended in acetate fibers) for the mass production of screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). The WL rearing system yielded 2% heavier pupae, 32% higher egg to pupa survival, and required 54% less diet and 88% less labor than the standard rearing system. Other advantages of the WL system include reduced susceptibility to suboptimal environmental conditions and labor practices and characteristics conducive to centralization and mechanization of rearing procedures.  相似文献

Cucurbit fly is an important pest of cucurbit plants (Cucumber, melon and watermelon) in most mid-east countries including, Iran. This insect causes a high damage so that several sprayings are required to control the pest. Using male strile is another physical method for controlling this pest. For this purpose it is necessary to rear many male insects. Therefore an investigation was carried out to compare different artificial diets for rearing the melon fly. First, pupae were collected from cucurbit field and transferred to laboratory. In this experiment five diet formulations were compared and the following was used for rearing: Wheat bran (14 g), soybean lees (3 g) sugar (50 g), yeast extract (2.7 g) nipagin (0.1 g). sodiumbenzoate (0.1 g) Hydrochloric acid 3.5% (4.0 ml) and distilled water 70.5 mil. For rearing the adult, the best diets contained: Brower yeast (1 part), Honey (5 parts), water (94 parts) and a slice of cucumber. The Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is an economically important pest of corn. Finding simple, cheap, and suitable rearing techniques of O. furnacalis is an urgent need to support research for management of this insect. This research aimed to determine the suitability of a read bean and rice bran-based artificial diet used for mass rearing of this insect since 2009.The tested artificial diet was compared with the natural diet (sweet corn kernel) and each diet was tested in individual rearing method (one larva in each vial). The criteria used to justify the quality of diet and mass rearing procedure were based on the fitness of O. furnacalis. The degree of fitness was based on life history, growth, and development. In general, the fitness parameteres observed from O. furnacalis reared in the artificial diet at 25.7?±?1.6?°C with 57.7?±?3.8% RH, and L12:D12 were similar than those in the natural diet.Therefore, the existing artificial diet and rearing procedure were considered suitable and qualified for O. furnacalis. It is important to periodically check the laboratory colony to ensure that they have similar fitness to those found in the natural population.  相似文献

Armyworms in the genus Pseudaletia Franclemont are important pests of cereal crops worldwide. The development of pest management strategies is largely dependent on studies involving the relationship among the pest, its host plants and natural enemies, as well as its susceptibility to chemical and biological control strategies. Part of these studies requires rearing the species of interest under laboratory conditions, which can be greatly facilitated by the use of artificial diets. In the present study, the effects of three artificial diets on development, survival, reproduction and demographic parameters of P. sequax were compared to a natural host plant, Pennisetum clandestinum. A diet based on pinto beans, wheat germ and torula yeast provided the best results in comparison to those obtained with the host plant. The most important life history parameters used in the evaluation of the nutritional quality of the diets were fecundity, egg viability and pupae deformities. The intrinsic rate of increase and the net reproductive rate were higher when individuals were fed on the artificial diet if compared to the host plant, indicating the suitability of the tested diet for the rearing of P. sequax. This artificial diet has been used successfully for the rearing of P. sequax without any fitness effect for over 18 consecutive generations.  相似文献

报道饲养烟青虫HelicoverpaassultaGue澖ee的一种人工饲料,比较了烟青虫取食该饲料和天然饲料的主要生物学指标,测定了6龄幼虫对2种食料的转化和利用率。该人工饲料的主要成分是麦胚、黄豆粉、酵母粉和烟叶粉,天然饲料为烟草叶片。结果表明:取食人工饲料的烟青虫幼虫生长发育快,化的蛹较大,成虫寿命长,产卵量大,所产卵孵化率高;取食人工饲料的烟青虫与取食烟草蒴果的相比,前者相对取食量和近似消化率较高,相对生长率无显著性差异。说明烟青虫对该人工饲料有较好的适应性,可以作为繁殖烟青虫的实用饲料。  相似文献

在人工饲养条件下 ,研究了不同温度条件对蝙蝠蛾Hepialusspp .卵及幼虫的影响和半人工饲料的饲喂效果。试验表明 ,卵在湿度适宜的情况下 ,以 1 5℃下的孵化率最高 ,为 86 75 %。用冷冻的方法可以将幼虫保存一定的时间 ,在低温条件下幼虫的抵抗能力变弱。在人工饲养 90d的时间内 ,对各试验组综合分析 ,初步确定 1号料较适合蝠蛾幼虫生长 ;在饲料中添加的 2种不同的防腐剂对幼虫体重的影响不显著  相似文献

Wheat germ oil was added to a larval liquid diet for rearing Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae) to optimize fruit fly quality. Effects of various concentrations of wheat germ oil at 0.04, 0.07, 0.15, 0.30, and 0.66% and their possible mode of action were evaluated. Results suggest that addition of wheat germ oil does not affect pupal weight, larval developmental period, adult emergence, mating ability, or peak time for egg production. But there was a significant increase in pupal recovery, percentage of adult fliers, egg production, or egg hatch for larvae fed the diet with wheat germ oil compared with those reared on the liquid diet without wheat germ oil. The increase in egg hatch and fliers was dose dependent. Therefore, addition of wheat germ oil to fruit fly rearing diet is a novel way to improve fruit fly quality, especially in egg hatch, fliers, egg production, and pupal recovery.  相似文献

The classical model of colony dynamics developed by Macevicz and Oster predicts that optimal colony fitness in annual eusocial insects is achieved by a bang-bang strategy of reproduction: exclusive production of workers (ergonomic phase) followed by exclusive production of sexuals (reproductive phase). We propose an alternative model that assumes colony development in discrete broods and a limited overall investment potential of the queen. Based on the costs for producing eggs, workers, and sexuals and efficiency of individuals we predict the optimal number of workers and sexuals in the colony for each brood of the colony cycle that maximizes overall colony fitness. To link our model assumptions to the real world we chose model parameters according to field data of the halictid bee Lasioglossum malachurum. However, our model is representative of a large number of species with an annual life cycle and with discrete broods. Our model shows that the optimal partitioning of resources, i.e. the optimal workers/sexuals ratio depends on rearing cost for sexuals as well as productivity of workers but not on the queens’ total investment, egg cost, or rearing cost for workers. In complete accordance to Macevicz and Oster we predict a bang-bang reproduction strategy despite the differences in the basic assumptions. Potential deviations from this strategy and transitions from social to solitary breeding are discussed in the framework of our model. Artificial foods comprising yeast products, sugar and water are often sprayed in the field to increase numbers of naturally occurring lacewing populations. The relative importance of the components of these foods for green lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea Stephens) fecundity and longevity is investigated in this paper. In laboratory experiments insects receiving only sugar solution lived significantly longer than those receiving diets containing both sugar and yeast (P<0.05). The inclusion of yeast is required for egg production, but few eggs are produced on yeast solution alone. For maximum egg production, food containing yeast and sugar must be offered on more than one occasion. Compared with insects given a diet comprising yeast autolysate, sugar, and water in the ratios 4∶7∶10, small but significant reductions in egg production rate were noted when the amount of either the yeast, or both the yeast and the sugar, was halved. The implication of these findings for the field is that viscous foods must be offered on a regular basis for maximum effectivity.  相似文献

For insects that develop inside discrete hosts, both host size and host quality constrain offspring growth, influencing the evolution of body size and life history traits. Using a two-generation common garden experiment, we quantified the contribution of maternal and rearing hosts to differences in growth and life history traits between populations of the seed-feeding beetle Stator limbatus that use a large-seeded host, Acacia greggii, and a small-seeded host, Pseudosamanea guachapele. Populations differed genetically for all traits when beetles were raised in a common garden. Contrary to expectations from the local adaptation hypothesis, beetles from all populations were larger, developed faster and had higher survivorship when reared on seeds of A. greggii (the larger host), irrespective of their native host. We observed two host plant-mediated maternal effects: offspring matured sooner, regardless of their rearing host, when their mothers were reared on P. guachapele (this was not caused by an effect of rearing host on egg size), and females laid larger eggs on P. guachapele. This is the first study to document plasticity by S. limbatus in response to P. guachapele, suggesting that plasticity is an ancestral trait in S. limbatus that likely plays an important role in diet expansion. Although differences between populations in growth and life history traits are likely adaptations to their host plants, host-associated maternal effects, partly mediated by maternal egg size plasticity, influence growth and life history traits and likely play an important role in the evolution of the breadth of S. limbatus’ diet. More generally, phenotypic plasticity mediates the fitness consequences of using novel hosts, likely facilitating colonization of new hosts, but also buffering herbivores from selection post-colonization. Plasticity in response to novel versus normal hosts varied among our study populations such that disentangling the historical role of plasticity in mediating diet evolution requires the consideration of evolutionary history.  相似文献

Rearing insects in controlled conditions is a prerequisite to supply high-quality specimens for bioassays. However, while artificial diets and standardized rearing methods have been developed for many phytophagous insects, especially Lepidoptera, there are limited published diets for root-feeding Coleoptera which are commonly fed either grass roots or pieces of vegetables as a simple alternative to artificial diets during bioassays. These feeding options, while convenient, can be considered suboptimal as they do not maximise the insects' development and health. Additionally, it is also important to develop standardised screening methods designed to test sublethal effects of control agents which may have repellent, antifeedant, antimetabolic and/or delayed mortality effects. The greyback canegrub (Dermolepida albohirtum, Waterhouse) is the most damaging native pest of Australian sugarcane, but no rearing method or artificial diet has ever been developed for this species. Our objectives were to improve bioassay methodology for D. albohirtum by describing and developing standard rearing and health assessment protocols. We describe a successful rearing method to raise healthy D. albohirtum larvae with a total of 48.8% of first instars successfully moulting to the second instar. We also tested a modified artificial diet which increased the weight, size and food uptake of larvae compared to traditional methods (i.e., pieces of carrots). For example, the average weight increase of larvae fed with the modified diet was 3.4 times higher than for carrot-fed larvae while modified diet-fed larvae were 2.1 times wider than if they were fed with carrots. Finally, we developed a method to measure larval activity which can be used to identify sublethal effects of control agents such as effects on activity level. Our methods may also be applied to improve bioassay methodology for other root-feeding Coleoptera.  相似文献
