When cases of early syphilis are treated promptly, the spread of the bacteria within a population is interrupted. However, if complacency is induced by successful control, then upsurges in syphilis incidence can occur. The methods and aims of syphilis control in industrialised countries are reviewed in the light of the potential for regional elimination and global eradication programmes. While the medical means to eliminate syphilis are at hand, acceptable means for finding and treating cases that transmit infection need to be developed, particularly in the marginalized communities with limited access to care.  相似文献

New computer-based sensor technology and geographic methods have led to emerging interest in use of satellite environmental assessment tools for design of disease control programs, especially for those that are vector borne. The long-range goal of work reported here by John Malone and colleagues on behalf of this Egyptian Ministry of Health-USAID Schistosomiasis Research Project team (Box 1) is to utilize data from sensor systems on board earth-observing satellites to develop more-sensitive disease-prediction and -control models. If successful, methods developed may provide a potentially vital capability for use by disease control program managers, particularly in less-developed countries, where mapping resources are not well advanced. Longer term, broader basic questions on the interaction of environment and disease in anticipation of predicted global climate change may be addressed. These studies focused on the lower Nile river basin of Egypt. The specific objective was to link data on environmental requirements for propagation and transmission of schistosomiasis with parameters measurable from space.  相似文献

The present paper describes the conceptual framework, rationale and methods of an international comparative study on risk and protective factors of adolescent health and well-being, with particular focus on youth with immigrant (or refugee) experience. This is a comprehensive study on the quality of life and health outcomes of adolescent youth that looks at group-specific differences within different socio-cultural contexts across six European countries, including those of post-conflict communities. The research project combines both quantitative and qualitative methods, using a common set-up across all countries involved with the goal of collecting data on 3,500 adolescents that are strictly comparable to allow cross-country analyses. It is particularly aimed at increasing the understanding of acculturation processes of a particularly sensitive population of adolescent refugees and immigrants and of the influence that the interaction of contextual and developmental factors has on their mental health and psychological well-being.  相似文献

The absence of an effective antileprosy vaccine, capable of preventing the spread of leprosy hinders its control in endemic countries. Developing such a vaccine is highly difficult due to the absence of reproducible methods for the in vitro cultivation of Mycobacterium leprae. The results of field trials of earlier proposed vaccines (BCG and BCG in combination with killed M. leprae) are indicative of their insufficient efficacy. The article presents a review of literature, including historical information, current problems and the main approaches to the development of vaccine against leprosy.  相似文献

Global trends of infant and child mortality have decreased over the last 30 years, while the proportion of malaria deaths has progressively increased due to the deteriorating situation in sub-Saharan Africa. The Global Malaria Control Strategy promoted by WHO has encountered several obstacles to its implementation. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can reduce malaria mortality, but there is still low investment on safe and effective modalities of care delivery at the periphery, where most of the malaria burden exists. Selective vector control (indoor residual spraying and insecticide-treated nets) plays a significant role outside Africa, but its wider use is limited by cost/affordability problems and operational issues (supply, delivery and logistics). Alternative methods such as environmental management and biological control are cost-effective only under very specific epidemiological situations. In most countries forecasting, early detection and containment of malaria epidemics is deficient, and there is separation between the research and control communities, particularly in Africa. Involvement of the internal agencies, strategic investments in capacity building and institutional networking are needed to strengthen capacity for malaria and research in the countries. The major responsibility is to guide the expenditure made by the communities (which far out-weigh the limited share of national health budgets) towards the most cost-effective approaches to reduce malaria mortality and morbidity.  相似文献

The benzimidazoles have served humans well in the continual battle to control nematode parasites among livestock. However, the value of these drugs has been seriously undermined in various countries, particularly in the southern hemisphere, by the development of resistance in the target parasite species. Scientists in many countries are trying to come to grips with this problem, with studies both in the laboratory and the field. However, there are shortcomings with both approaches, particularly the former, which need to be recognized. In this article, Peter Waller discusses these in relation to research into the experimental and epidemiological aspects of benzimidazole resistance.  相似文献

Constructed wetlands are among the recently proven efficient technologies for wastewater treatment. Compared to conventional treatment systems, constructed wetlands are low cost, are easily operated and maintained, and have a strong potential for application in developing countries, particularly by small rural communities. However, these systems have not found widespread use, due to lack of awareness, and local expertise in developing the technology on a local basis. This paper summarizes information on current methods used for wastewater treatment in developing countries, and briefly gives basic information on wetlands. The paper further examines the potential of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment and reuse in developing countries by looking at the results of current research initiatives towards implementation of the technology in these countries. Future considerations in choosing constructed wetlands as wastewater treating systems in developing countries are highlighted.  相似文献

Ticks have a world distribution and pest status reputation of hampering livestock production through transmission of fatal disease such as theileriosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, etc. and bites which cause blood loss, pain and other debilitating effects. Control of ticks is largely more effective on the host. The multi-host ticks spend most of the time off the host with short feeding periods of between four and ten days. Chemical control using dips or sprays has been the traditional method of attempting to kill these ticks during the infestation period. In many situations control, using acaricides, has been quite successful. This has been possible through correct timing of the ticks' seasonal activity and feeding periods to determine the application interval, and efficacy of the acaricides. However, the rising costs of acaricides have made it almost impossible to use these chemicals on a regular basis according to the pest problem. This is particularly true in many Third World tropical countries in which tick-associated problems are more pronounced. This has necessitated the search for alternative tick control methods on an integrated approach to pest management. For this reason, vaccination against ticks and breeding for host resistance against ticks are being studied in the hope that future control strategies will involve only the economically effective acaricide application in conjunction with these and other methods.  相似文献

The rapid expansion of oil palm (OP) has led to its emergence as a commodity of strategic global importance. Palm oil is used extensively in food and as a precursor for biodiesel. The oil generates export earnings and bolsters the economy of many countries, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia. However, oil palms are prone to basal stem rot (BSR) caused by Ganoderma boninense which is the most threatening disease of OP. The current control measures for BSR management including cultural practices, mechanical and chemical treatment have not proved satisfactory. Alternative control measures to overcome the G. boninense problem are focused on the use of biological control agents and many potential bioagents were identified with little proven practical application. Planting OP varieties resistant to G. boninense could provide the ideal long-term solution to basal stem rot. The total resistance of palms to G. boninense has not yet been reported, and few examples of partial resistances have been observed. Importantly, basidiospores are now recognized as the method by which the disease is spread, and control methods require to be revaluated because of this phenomenon. Many methods developed to prevent the spread of the disease effectively are only tested at nursery levels and are only reported in national journals inhibiting the development of useful techniques globally. The initial procedures employed by the fungus to infect the OP require consideration in terms of the physiology of the growth of the fungus and its possible control. This review assesses critically the progress that has been made in BSR development and management in OP.  相似文献

随着转基因产品在全球的迅速推广,包括我国在内的很多国家都建立了转基因标识制度。各检验检疫口岸应转基因产品生产企业、食品制造商、消费者等多方面需要,相继开展了转基因产品的检测工作。准确可靠的转基因产品检测技术是各国检疫检疫单位的共同需求。转基因产品的检测主要有两大类方法,一类是DNA水平上的检测,另一类是蛋白质水平上的检测。多个发达国家也相继成立专门机构或部门,负责转基因产品生物检测技术标准化工作。国际上对转基因产品的检测工作有向委托鉴定方向发展的趋势。我们简要综述了出入境转基因产品及其分子检测现状。  相似文献

The detection and monitoring of drought stress in plants growing in their natural habitat are essential for the study of plant stress physiology. However, with the advent of plant phenotyping and new -omics technologies, the application of simple, cheap, cost-effective, quick, and practical methods to assess drought stress in plants seems more challenging than ever, particularly in low-income countries. Here, currently available methods that do not require specialized equipment, but reliably detect and monitor drought stress in plants at low cost will be discussed. This will not only boost research on plant stress physiology in low-income countries but will also help several laboratories with very limited resources around the globe to perform high-quality research.  相似文献

Chemical genetics, or chemical biology, has become an increasingly powerful method for studying biological processes. The main objective of chemical genetics is the identification and use of small molecules that act directly on proteins, allowing rapid and reversible control of activity. These compounds are extremely powerful tools for researchers, particularly in biological systems that are not amenable to genetic methods. In addition, identification of small molecule interactions is an important step in the drug discovery process. Increasingly, the African frog Xenopus is being used for chemical genetic approaches. Here, we highlight the advantages of Xenopus as a first-line in vivo model for chemical screening as well as for testing reverse engineering approaches.  相似文献

For more than 50 years it has been a dream of medical entomologists and public health workers to control diseases like malaria and dengue fever by modifying, through genetics and other methods, the arthropods that transmit them to humans. A brief synopsis of the history of these efforts as applied to mosquitoes is presented; none proved to be effective in reducing disease prevalence. Only in the last few years have novel approaches been developed or proposed that indicate the long wait may be over. Three recent developments are particularly promising: CRISPR-Cas9 driven genetic modification, shifting naturally occurring allele frequencies, and microbe-based modifications. The last is the furthest along in implementation. Dengue fever incidence has been reduced between 40% and 96% in 4 different regions of the world where Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti have been established in the field. It is not yet clear how sustainable such control programs will prove to be, but there is good reason for optimism. In light of this, the time is ripe for reinvigorated research on vectors, especially genetics. Vector-borne diseases primarily affect under-developed countries and thus have not received the attention they deserve from wealthier countries with well-developed and funded biomedical research establishments.  相似文献

This paper discusses the general methodological controversy between individual and group research approaches by comparing the main characteristics of these two methods as applied to the specific context of basic research on voluntary heart rate control. A review of the literature published over the past 19 years in this area of study shows an imbalance in the frequency of utilization of these two methods that strongly favors short-term group designs. Implications of this research tendency are discussed. The relevance and the advantages of applying the individual approach to voluntary autonomic control research are outlined. This area is particularly amenable to the individual approach because the phenomena under study seem to be characterized by, among other things, a smaller intrasubject than intersubject variability. It is suggested that the present imbalanced tendency in the choice of a research method be corrected and that researchers adopt a more flexible attitude in the choice of the best method for studying each specific problem.  相似文献

Post-translational modifications generate tremendous diversity, complexity and heterogeneity of gene products, and their determination is one of the main challenges in proteomics research. Recent developments in mass spectrometry based approaches for systematic, qualitative and quantitative determination of modified proteins promise to bring new insights on the dynamics and spatio-temporal control of protein activities by post-translational modifications, and reveal their roles in biological processes and pathogenic conditions. Combinations of affinity-based enrichment and extraction methods, multidimensional separation technologies and mass spectrometry are particularly attractive for systematic investigation of post-translationally modified proteins in proteomics.  相似文献

This study is based on the authors' theory for neurotransmitter release in which explicit recognition is given to the generally accepted hypothesis that intracellular calcium ions (Ca) control the release. The new theory considers the resting level of intracellular Ca and proposes a saturating equation for the entry of Ca into the nerve terminals. The main purpose of the present paper is, by applying the new theory, to suggest experimental methods for discerning the various possible effects of drugs on release. New interpretations are given of log-log graphs of release as a function of extracellular Ca concentration. Maximal facilitation and the duration of facilitation are two other measurements that are shown to be particularly useful in determining the nature of drug action.  相似文献

There have been developments in several aspects of artificial insemination (AI) in recent years, some of which have been directly responsible for proliferation of AI in the sheep-breeding industries of several countries. The most notable advances have probably been associated with the development of intrauterine insemination by laparoscopy. There is potential for refinement of some of the related techniques, particularly in the area of control of ovulation and definition of appropriate times and optimum doses of spermatozoa for insemination. It is unlikely that laparoscopic AI will be developed sufficiently that it will become readily affordable, and therefore widely practised, by commercial producers. Unfortunately, there has been little progress in the past few years in improvement of the methods of cryopreservation of ram semen. There is considerable potential for AI to have a significant impact on the genetic improvement of sheep, though this has yet to be evaluated in practice. However, if the full potential of AI in sheep is to be realized, it will likely only happen when methods of freezing semen are improved sufficiently that cervical or even vaginal insemination can be widely used with frozen-thawed semen, or when practicable methods of deep cervical or intrauterine insemination through the cervix are developed.  相似文献
