Fifteen Awassi lambs and 15 Baladi kids (males, averaging 14.3 kg) were used to study the differences in feeding behavior and performance of sheep and goats fed a concentrate finishing diet (CP = 16 kg/100 kg DM, ME = 2.85 Mcal/kg DM) in a complete randomized design experiment lasting 60 days. Dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) intakes were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in lambs. Kids had higher (P < 0.05) apparent OM, crude protein (CP) and gross energy digestibilities. No significant (P > 0.05) differences were observed in apparent neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility, eating, chewing and ruminating times. However, eating and ruminating times (as min/kg NDF intake) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in kids. Final body weight and average daily weight gain were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in lambs while kids had significantly (P < 0.05) lower feed to gain ratio. Feed cost per kilogram weight gain for kids was better than that for lambs. Results demonstrated that Awassi lambs consumed more feed and grew faster than Baladi kids. However, kids were more efficient feed converters than lambs. 相似文献

Four cannulated sheep were used to study ruminal fermentation of a diet consisting of 60% sugar cane tops (Saccharum officinarum), 30% corn stubble (Zea mays), 10% King grass (Pennisetum purpureum) and 0% (control), 10, 20 or 30% controlled-release urea supplement (CRUS) (diets 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively). Average ruminal pH did not differ among diets (P>0.05), but during the first 6 h of sampling tended to be higher for CRUS diets. Ammonia concentrations were higher (P<0.01) in all treatments over controls, indicating microbial protein generation. Acetic acid production (mM/1) decreased (P<0.05), propionic acid increased (P<0.05), while butyric acid production did not differ among CRUS diets and controls (P>0.05). Total amounts of ruminal VFA were lowest (P<0.01) in controls, while CRUS diets produced more of these energy sources. Supplementation of the high fiber diets with 10, 20 or 30% CRUS increasingly improved rumen fermentation, ammonia supply and VFA production. The results show that low quality forages (up to 70% DMI) can be used efficiently by sheep when conditions for ruminal microorganism are improved with a controlled-release urea supplement. 相似文献

Aims
Because of its high dry matter (DM) productivity, elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) is an ideal candidate for biomass production for biofuel production if low N fertilizer rates are used to avoid high fossil fuel inputs. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of different elephant grass genotypes to obtain contributions of plant-associated biological N2 fixation (BNF).Methods
Three field experiments with 4 or 5 different genotypes were conducted on low-fertility Acrisols, two in Rio de Janeiro State and one in Espirito Santo for the evaluation of DM and N accumulation and 15N abundance. Results
DM and N accumulation rates of four genotypes in the two experiments in Rio State stabilized at high levels after 2?years of growth. In all experiments the spontaneously-occurring weeds in the plots were significantly higher in 15N abundance than the elephant grass genotypes. The lower 15N abundance of the elephant grass was shown not to be due to lower δ15N abundance at depth in the soil. Conclusions
Four of the grass genotypes obtained between 18 and 70% of their N from BNF amounting to inputs of between 36 and 132?kg N ha?1?yr?1. 相似文献4.

The effect of supplementing high-quality fresh forage, mainly based on alfalfa, to growing lambs fed with decreasing levels of total mixed ration (TMR) was studied on intake, digestion and ruminal environment. In total, 24 catheterized lambs (25.2±3.67 kg) housed in individual metabolism cages were assigned to one of four treatment diets: ‘TMR100’: TMR offered ad libitum; ‘TMR75’ and ‘TMR50’: TMR at a level of 0.75 and 0.50 of potential intake, respectively, complemented with fresh forage without restriction; ‘TMR0’: only fresh forage ad libitum. The feeding behavior, nutrient intake and digestibility, kinetics of passage and rumen environment were evaluated. As the level of TMR in the diet decreased, lambs increased the forage intake and spent more time eating and ruminating, less time resting and demonstrated a higher rate of intake. Those changes resulted in a higher nutrient intake of dry matter, organic matter, nitrogen, NDF and ADF, but a slightly lower organic matter digestibility, while no differences were detected in the output rate of particles. As a consequence, with the decrease of TMR and increase of forage intake, the ingested energy increased. Higher ruminal pH and NH3–N concentrations were observed for lower levels of TMR in the diet. The total volatile fatty acids, acetate and propionate concentrations presented a quadratic response. Total volatile fatty acids and acetate concentrations were higher and propionate concentration was lower in lambs consuming mixed diets (TMR50 and TMR75). We concluded that the inclusion of high-quality fresh forage in a combined diet with TMR in lambs had positive effects on nutrient intake without negative consequences on digestion and rumen environment. 相似文献

The effects of tanniferous sainfoin on digestion and metabolism have been investigated in 12 lambs in an incomplete cross-over design (n = 6). Effects of condensed tannins (CT) were evaluated by comparing dehydrated and ensiled sainfoin treated with and without polyethylene glycol (PEG). Dehydrated and ensiled grass-clover mixtures served as controls. The lambs were fed the treatment diets, including a mineral supplement, for 21 d. During the last 7 d excreta, rumen fluid and blood were sampled. The CT of sainfoin decreased rumen fluid ammonia concentration (p < 0.001) and increased the plasma concentration mainly of essential amino acids (p < 0.001). Body retention of phosphorus, calcium and magnesium was lower with sainfoin compared to PEG-treated sainfoin (p < 0.05). Sainfoin without PEG resulted in lower digestibilities of organic matter and neutral detergent fibre than sainfoin with PEG and the grass-clover mixture (p < 0.001). Ensiling of sainfoin led to the lowest N-retention. In conclusion, the reduction in ruminal ammonia and urine-N losses by sainfoin CT did not improve N-retention. 相似文献

Summary Field experiments were conducted during 1979 and 1980 summer seasons on sandy loam soils of low moisture retentive capacity
to study the effect of high frequency irrigation at different levels of N on groundnut yield and nutrient uptake (NPK).
Four irrigation frequencies (irrigation at 2, 4, 6 and 8 cm cumulative can evaporation, corresponding to irrigation once in
3, 5, 7 and 10 days respectively) and four levels of nitrogen (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg N/ha) were tested in a factorial randomized
block design with three replications.
Pod yield of groundnut was maximum (3,293 kg/ha) when irrigations were scheduled at 4 cm cumulative can evaporation (once
in 5 days). Addition of N did not increase the pod yield. N and P uptake by the crop was maximum (180 kg N and 18 kg P/ha)
with high frequency irrigation of scheduling irrigation at 4 cm cumulative can evaporation. Highest uptake of N (183 kg/ha)
and P (19 kg/ha) was with a combination of 20 kg N/ha and high frequency irrigation (4 cm CCE). K uptake was low with low
irrigation frequency, while it was highest (67 kg K/ha) at 20 kg N/ha. 相似文献

Experiments were conducted in vitro and in vivo to determine the effects of sulphur (S) supplementation of a good quality fescue hay containing 0.27% total S and a tropical star grass hay containing 0.20% total S. Addition of S was on an isosulphurous basis of either sodium sulphate or D,L-methionine. Cellulose digestion in vitro was improved (P < 0.001) by the addition of 1% urea. Supplementation of forage with 0.05, 0.10 or 0.15% S from either sodium sulphate or methionine also stimulated cellulose digestion in vitro. There were no differences between S sources. The addition of 0.4 or 0.8% nitrate-nitrogen (nitrate-N) (potassium nitrate) depressed (P < 0.05) cellulose digestion in vitro of both hays. No effect of animal adaptation to nitrate was evident. Addition of S partially counteracted the depression in cellulose digestion due to nitrate. Trials were conducted in vivo in which 12 crossbred wether lambs (fescue experiment) or 12 crossbred intact male lambs (star grass experiment) were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: control (forage with no addition of S); forage plus 0.15% S as sodium sulphate; and forage plus 0.15% S as D,L-methionine. Lambs were housed in metabolism crates and each experiment was replicated twice. Dry matter intakes were highest for methionine-supplemented fescue and for S-supplemented star grass, regardless of S source. Dry matter digestibility tended to increase with S addition (fescue experiment) and was significantly higher for S-supplemented star grass. There was a significant increase (P < 0.05) in neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) digestibility due to supplemental S, regardless of S source. Nitrogen retention, ammonia-N and ruminal volatile fatty acids were unaffected by S supplementation. 相似文献

Data regarding the influence of maturity within the vegetative stage of tropical grasses on forage quality are limited and conflicting. The change in chemical composition of rice grass (Echinochloa sp.) hay harvested at 32, 46, 72 and 90 days of regrowth, and its effect on intake, digestibility, ruminal fermentation, rumen microbial protein synthesis (Experiment 1) and splanchnic oxygen uptake (Experiment 2) by lambs was evaluated. Except intake of indigestible neutral detergent fibre (NDF) which was similar for all treatments, intake of all hay components and the apparent digestibility of dry matter, organic matter (OM), NDF, N, as well as OM and N true digestibility, N retention and rumen microbial protein synthesis decreased linearly (P < 0.05) with increased regrowth age. Rumen fluid pH, ammonia N and peptide concentrations were similar for all treatments while sugars and amino acid concentrations decreased linearly with increased regrowth age of rice grass (P < 0.05). Passage rate of particles through reticulum-rumen (PRrr) was quadratically related (P < 0.05) to regrowth age. The highest PRrr and, consequently, the lowest retention time in the reticulum-rumen were obtained at 72 days of regrowth. There was a quadratic effect (P < 0.05) on net portal-drained viscera (PDV) flux of oxygen and heat production, while OM intake, portal blood flow and heat production as proportion of digestible energy (DE) intake were not affected by the increased regrowth age of rice grass. The highest means of oxygen uptake and heat production by PDV tissues were in 72 days treatment. In the whole splanchnic metabolism assay neither hay intake nor blood flow, oxygen uptake or heat production were affected by forage regrowth age. In conclusion, the nutritive value of rice grass hay decreased as regrowth age increased from 32 to 90 days due to decrease both OM intake and digestibility. 相似文献

The presence of the fermentable sugar d-mannitol in the diet improves nitrogen (N) utilization in rabbits. To clarify the mechanism by which d-mannitol improves N utilization, we studied the effect of d-mannitol on the fate of blood urea N in growing rabbits. Growing rabbits received a control diet or a diet containing d-mannitol, which were formulated by adding 80 g/kg glucose or d-mannitol to timothy hay. After 9 days of feeding of the experimental diets, 15N-urea was administrated intravenously under anesthesia 1 h before slaughter. The blood urea level (concentration of both urea N (43.6% of the control group (CG), P < 0.05) and 15N (95% of the CG, P < 0.05) in blood serum) was reduced in the mannitol group. The concentration and amount of N, and 15N atom % excess in the contents of the cecum and colon were higher (P < 0.05) in the rabbits fed the mannitol diet than in rabbits fed the control diet, especially in the cecum. The consumption of mannitol caused bacterial proliferation in the cecum characterized by marked short-chain fatty acid production (165% of the CG, P < 0.05), decreased cecal ammonia N (73% of the CG, P < 0.05) and elevated cecal bacterial N (150% of the CG, P < 0.05). On the other hand, addition of d-mannitol to the diet decreased N (80% of the CG, P < 0.05) and 15N (77% of the CG, P < 0.05) excretion in the urine. These results indicate that d-mannitol increases the transfer of blood urea N to the large intestine, where it is used for bacterial N synthesis. 相似文献

Scarce information is available on the biological reasons why a small subset of introduced species can effectively establish within novel ecosystems. A comparison of early growth traits can help to explain the better performance of alien invasive species versus native co-occurring species. In one year-long experiment, we compared the early life stages of Ampelodesmos mauritanicus (Poir.) Dur. & Schinz (Amp), a native perennial Mediterranean grass, and Pennisetum setaceum (Forssk.) Chiov (Penn), an emerging invader grass in sub-arid and Mediterranean-climate areas. The Penn seedlings grew significantly faster and were approximately 2.5 times taller than the Amp seedlings, reaching a final average height of 90 cm. The shoot and root dry masses of the Penn seedlings were, respectively, more than 14 times and 4 times higher than those of the Amp seedlings. As a consequence, the shoot:root ratio was significantly higher in Penn, which resulted in a greater allocation of resources to the photosynthetic organs. Penn showed a more rapid life cycle compared with Amp. Penn produced seeds 9 months after sowing while no spikelet was produced by Amp until the end of the experiment. As a consequence, Penn may gain a reproductive advantage due to rapid seed dissemination. Ultimately, a suite of peculiar early growth traits makes Penn an aggressive competitor against Amp, which is an important floristic element of native Mediterranean grasslands. Penn seems better suited than Amp in colonizing frequently disturbed sites with fluctuating resource availability or irregular rainfall distribution and Penn is gradually replacing Amp. 相似文献

The aim of the present experiment was to ascertain if a daily niacin supplementation of 6 g/cow to lactating dairy cow diets can compensate for the decrease in rumen microbial fermentation due to a negative rumen nitrogen balance (RNB). A total of nine ruminally and duodenally fistulated lactating multiparous German Holstein cows was used. The diets consisted of 10 kg dry matter (DM) maize silage and 7 kg DM concentrate and differed as follows: (i) Diet RNB- (n = 6) with energy and utilisable crude protein (CP) at the duodenum (uCP) according to the average requirement of the animals, but with a negative RNB (-0.41 g N/MJ metabolisable energy [ME]); (ii) Diet RNB0 (n = 7) with energy, uCP, and RNB (0.08 g N/MJ ME) according to the average requirement of the animals; and (iii) Diet NA (nicotinic acid; n = 5), which was the same diet as RNB-, but supplemented with 6 g niacin/d. The negative RNB affected the rumen fermentation pattern and reduced ammonia content in rumen fluid and the daily duodenal flows of microbial CP (MP) and uCP. Niacin supplementation increased the apparent ruminal digestibility of neutral detergent fibre. The efficiency of microbial protein synthesis per unit of rumen degradable CP was higher, whereby the amount of MP reaching the duodenum was unaffected by niacin supplementation. The number of protozoa in rumen fluid was higher in NA treatment. The results indicated a more efficient use of rumen degradable N due to changes in the microbial population in the rumen when niacin was supplemented to diets deficient in RNB for lactating dairy cows. 相似文献

Studies were conducted to determine the rumen degradable nitrogen (RDN) requirement levels for optimum microbial protein synthesis and nutrient utilization in Nellore rams fed on finger millet straw (FMS) based diet. Thirty six Nellore sheep were randomly divided into four groups of nine animals each using the balanced completely randomized design. Animals in all the groups were fed finger millet straw as a basal roughage and groundnut cake (GNC) was offered daily in two equal halves in the morning (8.00 AM) and evening (4.00 PM) as RDN source. The animals in group I (GI) were fed with ad libitum FMS. Animals in group II, III and IV (GII, GIII, and IV) were offered GNC @ 12.4, 16.6, and 21.1 g RDN/kg digestible organic matter (DOM) along with FMS. The daily total dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) intakes linearly increased (P<0.05) with increasing level of RDN supplementation while there was no difference in total DM and OM intake/kg W0.75 among different experimental groups. The digestibility coefficients of DM (P<0.001), OM (P<0.001), crude protein (CP) (P<0.001), ether extract (EE) (P<0.001), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) (P<0.01) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) (P<0.03) increased quadratically with increasing level of RDN supplementation from GI to GIV. The purine derivatives (PD) excretion, microbial purine absorption and microbial nitrogen supply (MNS g/day) linearly increased (P<0.001) as the level of RDN supplementation increased. There was no difference in nitrogen capture efficiency (NCE) and microbial nitrogen to total urinary nitrogen ratio (MN:UN) among the RDN supplemented groups. This study indicated that 12 g RDN/kg digestible organic matter intake (RDN g/kg DOMI) or 18 g RDN/kg OM apparently digested in the rumen (RDN g/kg DOMR) may be adequate for optimum microbial protein synthesis and digestibility of nutrients, there by improved plane of nutrition in sheep fed on finger millet straw based diet. 相似文献

Wether lambs were fed on precision-chopped first-cut ryegrass silage ad libitum in an intake trial, and a maintenance and 1.5 times maintenance in balance trials. The untreated and treated silages had pH values of 4.72 and 4.40, mean dry matter (DM) contents of 176 and 184 g kg?1 and mean gross energy (GE) contents of 18.8 and 19.0 MJ/kg DM, respectively.Mean digestibility coefficients of DM (0.787 and 0.783), organic matter (OM) (0.827 and 0.820) and GE (0.794 and 0.793), for the treated and untreated silages respectively, were high. The metabolisable energy (ME) contents of the untreated and treated silages were 12.52 and 12.76 MJ/kg DM at maintenance and 11.94 and 12.56 MJ/kg DM at 1.5 times maintenance, respectively. The mean efficiency of utilisation of ME of the untreated and treated silages was 0.65 and 0.66 for maintenance (km) and 0.34 ± 0.134 and 0.40 ± 0.069 for growth (kg), respectively; the kg values were lower than expected.Dry matter intakes of these silages when given ad libitum were 27.9 and 28.8 g/kg W per day and produced live weight gains of 129 and 140 g day?1 for the untreated and treated silages, respectively. These gains were similar to predicted values for live weight gain only when the experimentally determined kg and km values were substituted in the equation of the Agricultural Research Council (1980) used for calculating the daily metabolisable energy requirements for live weight gain. 相似文献

Summary Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinium Hochst) grew relatively poorly on the Wollongbar krasnozem at soil pH values below 4.36. At these low pH values dry matter
yields were increased by raising the pH or by application of high rates of phosphate. Both treatments decreased the concentration
of soluble soil-Al on which the concentration of Al in tops was linearly dependent (r=0.95).
The inverse relationship found between plant growth and Al concentration, when present in excess of ∼1.5 μg/g soil and ∼90
μg/g tops, is suggestive of Al toxicity. However, at Al concentrations causing severe yield reductions, the Ca concentration
in kikuyu tops was approaching deficiency levels. The Al-Ca antagonism was further demonstrated by the reduction in Ca-uptake
caused by increased concentrations of soluble soil-Al under constant conditions of exchangeable Ca and of pH. The yield-reducing
effects of Al toxicity per se and Al-induced Ca deficiency are therefore confounded. 相似文献

Thermal conversion of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum) to bio-gas, bio-oil and charcoal 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Elephant grass is an abundant, fast growing plant with significant potential as a renewable energy source and for conversion to higher calorific value fuels. This work investigates thermal conversion of elephant grass to bio-gas, bio-oil and charcoal under two heating rates of 10 and 50 degrees C/min. The energy required to pyrolyse elephant grass was evaluated using computer aided thermal analysis technique, while composition of the resultant bio-gas and bio-oil products were monitored with gas chromatographic and mass spectroscopic techniques. At 500 degrees C, the bio-gas compounds consisted primarily of CO(2) and CO with small amounts of methane and higher hydrocarbon compounds. The heat of combustion of the bio-gas compounds was estimated to be 3.7-7.4 times higher than the heat required to pyrolyse elephant grass under both heating rates, which confirms that the pyrolysis process can be self-maintained. Faster heating rate was found to increase the amount of liquid products by 10%, while charcoal yields remained almost the same at 30%. The bio-oil mainly consisted of organic acids, phthalate esters, benzene compounds and amides. The amount of organic acids and benzene compounds were significantly reduced at 50 degrees C/min, while the yields of phthalate esters and naphthalene compounds increased. The difference in bio-oil composition with increased heating rate is believed to be associated with the reduction of the secondary reactions of pyrolysis, which are more pronounced under lower heating rate. 相似文献

The objective of this work was to evaluate the intake (I) of all Buddleia skutchii foliage (BSF), collected from three different sites (places: A, B and C) in feeding sheep (phase 1), and in combination with Pennisetum clandestinum (Pc) (phase 2). Trials of feed intake, in vivo dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), and digestibilities of crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and nitrogen balance were carried out during phase 1. Diet was given to nine Creole male lambs of 23(±3) kg body weight (BW), located in individual metabolism crates. During phase 2, four treatments were evaluated (T1 = 100% Pc, T2 = 20% BSF + 80% Pc, T3 = 40% BSF + 60% Pc and T4 = 60% BSF + 40% Pc) in a 4 × 4 Latin square design, using four ruminal cannulated Creole male rams of 50 ± 2 kg BW and remained in individual metabolism crates. In vivo digestibility (DM, CP and gross energy (GE)) and kinetics of in situ disappearance of DM were evaluated. The results in phase 1 indicated that BSF from Site B had relatively higher CP (14.9%), ADF (50.6%) content and nitrogen retention (1.93 g d−1). On the other hand, the lambs showed intake levels of 376.29 g d−1 DM, 56.21 g d−1 CP, 206.24 g d−1 ADF and 1418.21 kcal gross energy (P > 0.05); and digestibilities of 54.23% DM, 47.17% CP and 39.31% NDF. Therefore, BSF from Site B was selected for the second phase of this work as the best result. We observed that the nutrition quality of the diets was higher as a result of increasing BSF concentration in the diet. When sheep were fed on 40% BSF–60% Pc, DM intake levels of 900.6 g d−1, and DM, CP and GE digestibility of 70.0, 52.82 and 55.1%, respectively, were observed. There were not significant differences among diets, and in situ disappearance, Kd and Kp, but the diet with 60% of BSF presented higher ruminal digestibility (42.3%). The results allowed to validate the local knowledge on BSF as a promising forage species, and showed that BSF should be incorporated in a sheep production system. 相似文献
