In the developing world, the dramatic male bias in tobacco use is usually ascribed to pronounced gender disparities in social, political, or economic power. This bias might also reflect under-reporting by woman and/or over-reporting by men. To test the role of gender inequality on gender differences in tobacco use we investigated tobacco use among the Aka, a Congo Basin foraging population noted for its exceptionally high degree of gender equality. We also tested a sexual selection hypothesis—that Aka men’s tobacco use is related to risk taking. Tobacco use, income, tobacco purchases, tobacco sharing, reasons for using tobacco, risk taking, and other variables were measured using structured surveys and peer reports. Tobacco use was verified by testing for salivary cotinine, a nicotine metabolite. Contrary to expectations, we found a very large male bias in tobacco use. Low levels of use among females appeared to be explained by aversions to tobacco, concerns over its negative effects on fetal health, and a desire to attract husbands, who prefer nonsmoking wives. High male use appeared to be related to a desire to enhance hunting abilities and attract and/or retain wives, who prefer husbands that smoke. We conclude that low levels of smoking by Aka women are better explained by the hypothesis that women evolved to avoid plant toxins to protect their fetuses and nursing infants. High male use might be better explained by sexual selection. We also highlight the important role that recreational drugs appear to play in hunter-gatherer sharing relationships.  相似文献

Background

Tobacco use leads to many health complications and is a risk factor for the occurrence of cardio vascular diseases, lung and oral cancers, chronic bronchitis etc. Almost 6 million people die from tobacco-related causes every year. This study was conducted to measure the prevalence of tobacco use in three different areas around Chennai city, south India.

Methods

A survey of 7510 individuals aged > = 15 years was undertaken covering Chennai city (urban), Ambattur (semi-urban) and Sriperumbudur (rural) taluk. Details on tobacco use were collected using a questionnaire adapted from both Global Youth Tobacco Survey and Global Adults Tobacco Survey.

Results

The overall prevalence of tobacco use was significantly higher in the rural (23.7%) compared to semi-urban (20.9%) and urban (19.4%) areas (P value <0.001) Tobacco smoking prevalence was 14.3%, 13.9% and 12.4% in rural, semi-urban and urban areas respectively. The corresponding values for smokeless tobacco use were 9.5%, 7.0% and 7.0% respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that the odds of using tobacco (with smoke or smokeless forms) was significantly higher among males, older individuals, alcoholics, in rural areas and slum localities. Behavioural pattern analysis of current tobacco users led to three groups (1) those who were not reached by family or friends to advice on harmful effects (2) those who were well aware of harmful effects of tobacco and even want to quit and (3) those are exposed to second hand/passive smoking at home and outside.

Conclusions

Tobacco use prevalence was significantly higher in rural areas, slum dwellers, males and older age groups in this region of south India. Women used mainly smokeless tobacco. Tobacco control programmes need to develop strategies to address the different subgroups among tobacco users. Public health facilities need to expand smoking cessation counseling services as well as provide pharmacotherapy where necessary.  相似文献

The functional significance of genetic polymorphisms on tobacco smoke-induced CYP1A2 activity was examined. The influence of three polymorphisms of the cytochrome P450 1A2 gene (CYP1A2) (-3860 G-->A (allele *1C), -2467 T-->delT (allele *1D), -163C-->A (allele *1F)), located in the 5'-noncoding promoter region of the gene, on CYP1A2 activity (measured as caffeine metabolic ratio, CMR), was studied in Caucasian current smokers (n=95). Tobacco smoke intake was calculated from the number of cigarettes/day. Also, studied was the influence of these CYP1A2 genotypes on smoking-associated urinary mutagenicity, detected in Salmonella typhimurium strain YG1024 with S9 mix, considering the urinary excretion of nicotine plus its metabolites as an internal indicator of tobacco smoke exposure. Smokers with at least one of the variant alleles CYP1A2 -3860A and -2467 delT showed a significantly increased CYP1A2 CMR (-3860 G/A versus G/G, p<0.05; -2467 delT/delT versus T/delT and T/T, p<0.01). Multiple regression analysis showed that the increase in CYP1A2 CMR (ln values) was again significantly related to the presence of CYP1A2 variants -2467delT and also to variant -163A (p<0.05), but moderately to -3860A (p=0.084). No influence of the number of cigarettes smoked per day by each subject was found. Heavy smokers (n=48, with urinary nicotine plus its metabolites>or=0.69 mg/mmol creatinine) with variant allele -2467delT or -163A had significantly increased urinary mutagenicity (p<0.01 and <0.05). CYP1A2 genetic polymorphisms are shown to influence the CYP1A2 phenotype in smokers, -2467 T-->delT having the main effect. This information is of interest for future studies assessing the possible role of tobacco smoke-inducible CYP1A2 genotypes as individual susceptibility factors in exposure to carcinogens.  相似文献

Tobacco leaf curl is widespread in several states in India including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Bihar and West Bengal. Tobacco leaf curl virus (TbLCV) isolates collected from five different parts of India induced four distinct symptom phenotypes (group I, II, III & IV) on tobacco cultivars Samsun and Anand 119 (Valand & Muniyappa, 1992). PCR was performed on DNA extracted from group I and IV leaf curl‐affected tobacco from Karnataka, India using degenerate begomovirus‐specific primers. Subsequent cloning and sequencing of PCR products revealed preliminary evidence for the presence of at least three begomoviruses in the affected material following alignment of a 333 bp region of the coat protein gene (CP). The complete CP and common region (CR) of two putative begomoviruses, Tobacco leaf curl virus‐Karnataka1 (TbLCV‐Kar1) and Tobacco leaf curl virus‐Karnataka2 (TbLCV‐Kar2), were sequenced using PCR clones obtained with designed sequence‐specific primers. Phylogenetic analysis of the CP and CR of TbLCV‐Kar1 and TbLCV‐Kar2 placed them in the Asian Old World begomovirus cluster. The two viruses differed from each other significantly in both the CP gene and the CR (< 90% nucleotide sequence identity). This difference, in conjunction with distinct iterative sequences strongly suggests that these begomoviruses are distinct from one another. Group I and IV tobacco were also found to harbour a possible third begomovirus following the 333 bp CP alignment. Comparison of TbLCV‐Kar1 and TbLCV‐Kar2 with other geminiviruses, showed that both sequences shared high nucleotide sequence identity (> 90%) with other begomoviruses in either the CP or CR, thereby suggesting these viruses to be possible strains of other reported begomoviruses. Combined comparison of the CP and CR sequences however, suggests that the two viruses are not strains of other reported begomoviruses, but may be distinct begomoviruses that could have arisen through recombination events during mixed infections. Phylogenetic comparison demonstrated no significant homology between the Indian tobacco begomoviruses and a tobacco‐infecting begomovirus from Zimbabwe, again showing that as with other geminiviruses, there is a geographic basis for phylogenetic relationships rather than an affiliation with tobacco as a host.  相似文献

Background

In 1996 Massachusetts proposed regulations that would require tobacco companies to disclose information about the ingredients in their products on a by-brand basis. This paper examines the strategies employed by Philip Morris to stop these regulations from being implemented.

Methods and Finding

We used previously secret tobacco industry documents and published literature to examine the activities of the tobacco companies after the regulations were proposed. Philip Morris hired a public relations firm to establish a coalition that was instructed to oppose the regulations by linking them to other industrial sectors (the slippery slope) and stating they would damage the state''s economy. Philip Morris also retained a polling firm to test the popularity of specific arguments against ingredient disclosure and developed a strategic plan for opposing similar regulations in Vermont.

Conclusion

Tobacco companies have historically used third parties to form coalitions to oppose ingredient disclosure regulations. These coalitions have had success preventing regulations from being implemented after they are initially proposed by creating the appearance of local opposition. With countries around the world currently implementing ingredient disclosure regulations in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco, governments and regulatory agencies should be aware of the political strategies that the tobacco companies have used to create the impression of popular opposition to these measures.  相似文献

In laboratory tests, flue-cured tobacco inoculated with Aspergillus repens was stored at 75, 80, 85, 87, and 95% relative humidity at 20 and 30 C. Samples were taken weekly for 4 weeks and evaluated for mold growth (colony count) and moisture content (MC). The weekly rate of fungus increase was slower at 20 C than at 30 C. Tobacco at 20 C with MC between 25 to 30% supported a slight to moderate increase in A. repens after 3 weeks of storage. However, tobacco at the same MC stored at 30 C was subject to rapid invasion by the fungus in as few as 1 to 2 weeks. Tobacco with MC above 30% stored at either 20 or 30 C became moldy in about 1 week. A mold index is proposed for evaluating populations of A. repens in tobacco.  相似文献

Potyviruses express most of their proteins from a long open reading frame that is translated into a large polyprotein processed by three viral proteases. To understand the constraints on potyvirus genome organization, we relocated the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (NIb) cistron to all possible intercistronic positions of the Tobacco etch virus (TEV) polyprotein. Only viruses with NIb at the amino terminus of the polyprotein or in between P1 and HC-Pro were viable in tobacco plants.  相似文献

Tobacco, eastern black nightshade, and tomato were grown for 3 to 13 weeks to assess differences in invasion, development, and soil density of Globodera tabacum tabacum (tobacco cyst nematode) in field plots and microplots over three seasons. Tobacco cyst nematodes invaded roots of resistant and susceptible tobacco, nightshade, and tomato. Nematode development was fastest in nightshade and slowest in tomato, and few adults developed in roots of nematode-resistant tobacco. Soil populations of tobacco cyst nematodes were reduced up to 80% by destroying nightshade or susceptible tobacco grown for 3 to 6 weeks. Nematode populations were reduced up to 96% by destroying tomato or resistant tobacco grown for 3 to 6 weeks. Timing of crop destruction was less critical with tomato and resistant tobacco, as nematode populations did not increase after 13 weeks of growth. These studies demonstrate that trap cropping, through crop destruction, can significantly reduce G. t. tabacum populations.  相似文献

Background

Tobacco control needs in India are large and complex. Evaluation of outcomes to date has been limited.

Aim

To review the extent of tobacco control measures, and the outcomes of associated trialled interventions, in India.

Methods

Information was identified via database searches, journal hand-searches, reference and citation searching, and contact with experts. Studies of any population resident in India were included. Studies where outcomes were not yet available, not directly related to tobacco use, or not specific to India, were excluded. Pre-tested proformas were used for data extraction and quality assessment. Studies with reliability concerns were excluded from some aspects of analysis. The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) was use as a framework for synthesis. Heterogeneity limited meta-analysis options. Synthesis was therefore predominantly narrative.

Results

Additional to the Global Tobacco Surveillance System data, 80 studies were identified, 45 without reliability concerns. Most related to education (FCTC Article 12) and tobacco-use cessation (Article 14). They indicated widespread understanding of tobacco-related harm, but less knowledge about specific consequences of use. Healthcare professionals reported low confidence in cessation assistance, in keeping with low levels of training. Training for schoolteachers also appeared suboptimal. Educational and cessation assistance interventions demonstrated positive impact on tobacco use. Studies relating to smoke-free policies (Article 8), tobacco advertisements and availability (Articles 13 and 16) indicated increasingly widespread smoke-free policies, but persistence of high levels of SHS exposure, tobacco promotions and availability—including to minors. Data relating to taxation/pricing and packaging (Articles 6 and 11) were limited. We did not identify any studies of product regulation, alternative employment strategies, or illicit trade (Articles 9, 10, 15 and 17).

Conclusions

Tobacco-use outcomes could be improved by school/community-based and adult education interventions, and cessation assistance, facilitated by training for health professionals and schoolteachers. Additional tobacco control measures should be assessed.  相似文献

Tobacco viruses transmitted by green peach aphids, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), cause severe disease in flue‐cured tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum L. (Solanaceae), in China and throughout the world. Field experiments were conducted in 2016 and 2017 in Longyan City, Fujian Province, China, to determine whether M. persicae and aphid‐transmitted virus diseases are affected by intercropping of oilseed rape, Brassica napus L. (Brassicaceae), in tobacco fields. The results showed that, compared with those in monocultured fields, the densities of M. persicae and winged aphids in intercropped fields significantly decreased in both 2016 and 2017. In particular, the appearance of winged aphids was delayed by ca. 7 days. Moreover, the densities of Aphidius gifuensis Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), a parasitoid of the aphid, significantly increased in 2016 and 2017. Accordingly, the incidence rates of aphid‐transmitted virus diseases (those caused by the cucumber mosaic virus, potato virus Y, and tobacco etch virus) significantly decreased in the intercropped fields in 2016 and 2017. Tobacco yields and monetary value significantly increased in 2016 (by 10–25 and 14–29%, respectively) and 2017 (by 17–22 and 22–34%, respectively). Consequently, our results suggest that intercropping oilseed rape in tobacco fields is a good approach to regulating and controlling aphids and tobacco mosaic viruses, for example potyvirus, and this intercropping can help control aphid‐transmitted virus diseases in tobacco.  相似文献

When tobacco plants were treated by injection with nitric oxide (NO)-releasing compounds, the sizes of lesions caused by Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) on the treated leaves and on upper nontreated leaves were significantly reduced. The reduction in TMV lesion size was caused by NO released from the NO-releasing compounds; the byproduct formed after release of NO from the NO-releasing compound NOC-18, diethylenetriamine, did not itself alter lesion size. Treatment of tobacco plants with inhibitors of nitric oxide synthase or an NO scavenger attenuated but did not abolish the systemic acquired resistance (SAR) induced by salicylic acid (SA). In NahG transgenic tobacco plants, NO had no effect on lesion size following TMV infection. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that NO plays an important role in SAR induction in tobacco and that NO is required for the full function of SA as an SAR inducer. The activity of NO is fully dependent on the function of SA in the SAR signaling pathway in tobacco.  相似文献

Tobacco use--especially smoking industrially manufactured cigarettes--kills nearly 5 million people annually and is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide. Tobacco is a widely used global commodity embedded in cultural meanings, and its consumption involves a set of learned, patterned social behaviors. Seemingly, then, tobacco offers a most appealing anthropological research topic, yet its study has been relatively ignored by medical anthropologists when compared to research on alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs. To help fill this gap, this article sketches the historical background of tobacco in Micronesia, presents the results of a cross-sectional smoking survey from Namoluk Atoll, and describes contemporary smoking patterns and locally understood symbolic associations of tobacco. Intersections among history, gender, local meanings, the health transition, and the transnational marketing of tobacco are addressed, and cigarette smoking is seen as part of a new syndemic of chronic diseases in Micronesia.  相似文献

叶面积指数(LAI)是表征烟草生长健康状态的重要指标之一,获取准确的LAI数据是监测烟草生长走势的重要步骤。以广东省南雄地区为试验区开展了集合卡尔曼滤波同化方法在烟草LAI的应用研究。通过野外实测得到南雄烟草生长期内的高光谱数据,并计算每个生长期的归一化植被指数(NDVI),依据NDVI值获得LAI测量数据;通过积温数据和实测LAI数据构建了符合南雄地区烟草LAI变化规律的LOGISTIC模型;并以LAI为研究变量,利用集合卡尔曼滤波数据同化技术融合NDVI数据计算得到的LAI和简化LOGSITIC模型拟合得到的LAI这两种不同的数据信息,获取实验区烟草生长期时间序列上的连续LAI数据。最后,进一步对比了数据同化方法、NDVI计算LAI方法和LOGISTIC模型拟合这3种方法获取烟草LAI的效果。结果显示:数据同化方法、NDVI计算LAI方法和LOGISTIC模型拟合3种方法均可一定程度上表征烟草LAI的变化状态,其中数据同化方法拟合效果最优。实验发现NDVI计算LAI方法在烟草生长前后期LAI值出现偏大或偏小的异常情况;LOGISTIC模型拟合则不能有效的描述烟草LAI的突发性变化;同化方法综合作物生长模型和遥感监测的优势,能够动态调节参数得到LAI优化结果,同化后LAI结果和真实值吻合,变化曲线更符合烟草的实际生长状况。  相似文献

We investigate whether the distributions to the states from the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) in 1998 is associated with stronger tobacco control efforts. We use state level data from 50 states and the District of Columbia from four time periods post MSA (1999, 2002, 2004, and 2006) for the analysis. Using fixed effect regression models, we estimate the relationship between MSA disbursements and a new aggregate measure of strength of state tobacco control known as the Strength of Tobacco Control (SoTC) Index. Results show an increase of $1 in the annual per capita MSA disbursement to a state is associated with a decrease of −0.316 in the SoTC mean value, indicating higher MSA payments were associated with weaker tobacco control measures within states. In order to achieve the initial objectives of the MSA payments, policy makers should focus on utilizing MSA payments strictly on tobacco control activities across states.  相似文献

研究了滇中地区烤烟中部叶片旺长期(移栽后60-65d)N、K营养及N、K平衡。结果表明:⑴烟叶一般N含量为2.5%-4%,K含量为1%-3%,N/K比为2.5-3.5。⑵烟叶N含量>4%,就有N过剩的症状产生。⑶烟叶N含量<2.5%,K含量<1%,就表现出N、K缺乏症状。⑷烟叶N/K比失调,过高或过低,都会影响烟株正常生长。  相似文献

A one‐step multiplex RT‐PCR method has been developed for the simultaneous detection of four viruses frequently occurring in tobacco (Cucumber mosaic virus, Tobacco mosaic virus, Tobacco etch virus and Potato virus Y). Four sets of specific primers were designed to work with the same reaction reagents and cycling conditions, resulting in four distinguishable amplicons representative of the four viruses independently. This one‐step multiplex RT‐PCR is consistently specific using different combinations of virus RNA as templates, and no non‐specific band was observed. It has high sensitivity compared to single RT‐PCR. Moreover, field samples in China can be tested by this method for virus detection. Our results show that one‐step multiplex RT‐PCR is a high‐throughput, specific, sensitive method for tobacco virus detection.  相似文献

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is an important cash crop and an ideal experimental system for studies on plant–pathogen interaction. The sequenced tobacco genome provides an opportunity for examining resistance gene homologs (RGHs) in the tobacco genome. Thirty nucleotide-binding site-type RGHs were annotated from genomic data, and another 281 putative RGHs were identified via PCR amplification from wild and cultivated tobacco. The newly identified RGHs are similar to other known RGHs, and some were categorized into new groups or branches that are different from known Nicotiana R genes or RGHs. Of the 281RGHs, 146 were identified from a single tobacco genome. We did not find any polymorphism at the RGHs in cultivated accessions, implying that strong domestication selection and/or demographic effects might have caused a sharp reduction in nucleotide diversity. Three positive selection sites were found in several RGH groups, while purifying selection is pervasive in the RGH family. Our results provide a primary RGH pool and several positively selected sites for the further functional validation of resistance genes in tobacco.  相似文献
