Habituation to a vibrational stimulus was studied in intact caddies Chaetopteryx villosa Fabr. of the last age before pupation and of the larvae placed for 72 h into piracetam solution (100 mg/l). The vibrational stimulus was shown to produce a passive-defensive reaction: the caddies were pulled into the house and stood still. In the course of the experiment the time of stay in the house decreased statistically significantly in both groups. Piracetam did not affect the defensive reaction at the initial moment of the first vibrational stimulus, so both in the experimental and in the control groups the number of contracted larvae was equal and all of them remained in the house for the first seconds of vibration. However, the compound increased the number of larvae that did not respond to the next vibrational stimulus and decreased the number of larvae that remain in the house throughout all 10 s of action by accelerating on the whole the habituation. Hence, on this model, the mnemotropic effect of the standard nootrope has been realized, which earlier was established by other methods in mammals, the lower vertebrates, and the higher invertebrates. This indicates that this model also is perspective for comparative studies of effect of nootropic substances on the higher nervous activity.  相似文献

Bioassays were conducted to study the effect of a single therapeutic dose of injectable ivermectin, doramectin or moxidectin given to cattle and pigs and excreted in their faeces, against larvae of the housefly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae). Five cattle were treated with each of the test products. Cattle faecal samples were collected before treatment and on days 1, 2, 3, 6, 10, 16, 20, 23 and 28 after treatment. Three groups of pigs, each comprising 12-14 pregnant sows and gilts, were used in the experiment. Pig faeces was collected from each group before treatment and on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 20 after treatment. Thirty, first-stage larvae were placed into 100 g of faeces. Five replicates were examined for each time-point and for each endectocide group. Evaluation was based on the number of larvae surviving to adult emergence. Low numbers of adults emerged from samples taken from cattle 1 day after treatment, indicating that ivermectin and doramectin were rapidly excreted in the faeces and affected the development of the house fly. A larvicidal effect of both drugs in cattle faeces was present for a period of about 3-4 weeks and lasted a few days longer in cattle treated with doramectin than with ivermectin. In cattle, the larvicidal activity of moxidectin was first observed in faecal samples collected 2 days post-treatment; however, it killed fewer larvae than the other two drugs. The larvicidal effect of moxidectin subsequently decreased. Ivermectin and doramectin exhibited a pronounced larvicidal effect against the house fly in the faeces of pigs. The effect of doramectin was of longer duration. Moxidectin gave the weakest larvicidal effect in pig faeces. The main difference between the results obtained for the two livestock species is that peak toxicity occurred relatively later and for a shorter duration in pig than in cattle faeces.  相似文献

Wild house mice, naturally infected with Aspiculuris tetraptera were segregated according to their weight into six age groups. The prevalence of infection and the mean worm burden of these mice were studied in the different age groups. The overall prevalence of infection was high (57% or more) in all the groups except the youngest. Mice acquired larvae soon after weaning; the highest larval burdens were reached in juvenile mice and the highest mature worm burdens, a group later, in mature mice. Older mice had fewer larvae and fewer mature worms. The mature worm burdens decreased but relatively slower than the larval burdens. It is suggested that eigher innate or acquired resistance could account for these observations.  相似文献

Social wasps in several genera exhibit a diverse array of conspicuous vibrational behavior patterns closely associated with larval feeding. Polistes, as the only genus in which these substrate-borne mechanical signals have been studied in some detail, is a useful system for understanding their functions. Most Polistes species examined perform antennal drumming (AD) in the context of feeding prey liquid to larvae. Two existing hypotheses on the function of AD propose that it is a behavioral releaser signal that regulates the release of larval saliva, but with opposite effects. One proposes that AD stimulates larvae to release their saliva for the drumming adult to imbibe, whereas the other proposes that AD inhibits saliva release. A recently proposed third hypothesis argues instead that AD has a modulatory effect on development: exposure to high levels of AD biases larvae toward a worker phenotype as adults. While the larval-saliva-release hypothesis for AD function has little support, predictions made by both the inhibition hypothesis and the mechanical switch hypothesis are yet to be tested within the broader ontogenetic framework of the Polistes colony cycle. We investigated the contexts, rates of performance, and actors associated with AD across 13 weeks of the P. fuscatus colony cycle. Mean colony-wide rates of AD were high during pre-emergence and early post-emergence stages, but dropped dramatically following the third week after the first workers emerged. This variation in the temporal pattern of AD was correlated neither with the rate at which larvae were fed liquid, the number of larvae on the nest, nor with the adult-to-larva ratio, but was solely a function of colony stage. In contrast, rates of feeding liquid to larvae varied only as a function of the number of larvae in the nest. Queens drummed and fed liquid to larvae at much higher rates than did workers. Queen AD and feed-liquid rates decreased after the third week of worker emergence. During the same period, total feed-liquid rates of workers became as high as levels of queens during pre-emergence. Colony-wide AD rates dropped dramatically because workers seldom drummed while feeding liquid to larvae. The mean duration of AD bursts for queens also decreased after the second week of worker emergence. These results fail to support the salivary inhibition hypothesis, but provide indirect support for the mechanical switch hypothesis on AD function.  相似文献

Two groups of Biomphalaria glabrata snails primarily infected with Angiostrongylus contonensis were secondarily exposed to infection with Schistosoma mansoni. To investigate any anatagonistic effect of the first infection on a superimposed one and to compare to singly and non-infected snails, a series of experiments was undertaken in which snails were individually exposed, variously, to 1,000 and 2,000 first-stage larvae of A. cantonensis and then to 5 and 10 miracidia of S. mansoni 1 day and 3 weeks later. Snails became infected with S. mansoni in both groups of snails with double infections and shed cercariae after the same incubation period as in the singly infected groups. The number of snails shedding cercariae simultaneously was similar in single and double infection groups during the first two weeks of shedding, after which this number decreased somewhat in doubly infected groups. Snails with double infection showed higher cumulative mortality rates than in snail groups with single infection with either A. cantonensis or S. mansoni. Therefore, initial infection of B. glabrata with A. cantonensis produced no inhibitory or retarding effect on subsequent infection of snails with S. mansoni.  相似文献

Distributions of lesser mealworm, Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), in litter of a compacted earth floor broiler house in southeastern Queensland, Australia, were studied over two flocks. Larvae were the predominant stage recorded. Significantly low densities occurred in open locations and under drinker cups where chickens had complete access, whereas high densities were found under feed pans and along house edges where chicken access was restricted. For each flock, lesser mealworm numbers increased at all locations over the first 14 d, especially under feed pans and along house edges, peaking at approximately 26 d and then declining over the final 28 d. A life stage profile per flock was devised that consisted of the following: beetles emerge from the earth floor at the beginning of each flock, and females lay eggs, producing larvae that peak in numbers at approximately 3 wk; after a further 3 to 4 wk, larvae leave litter to pupate in the earth floor, and beetles then emerge by the end of the flock time. Removing old litter from the brooder section at the end of a flock did not greatly reduce mealworm numbers over the subsequent flock, but it seemed to prevent numbers increasing, while an increase in numbers in the grow-out section was recorded after reusing litter. Areas under feed pans and along house edges accounted for 5% of the total house area, but approximately half the estimated total number of lesser mealworms in the broiler house occurred in these locations. The results of this study will be used to determine optimal deployment of site-specific treatments for lesser mealworm control.  相似文献

Characteristics of motion sickness and effects of possible prophylactic drugs were studied using Suncus murinus (house musk shrew) for its potential use as an experimental model in motion sickness. Mild reciprocal shaking (amplitude: 10-40 mm; frequency: 0.5-3.0 Hz) induced vomiting in most of Suncus murinus within 2 min. Adaptation was observed when the motion stimulus was repeated with an interval of 2 to 3 days. During the repetitive motion training, both the ratio of sensitive animals and the number of vomiting episodes decreased, and the time from the start of shaking to the first vomiting was extended. Subcutaneous injection of scopolamine (100 mg/kg), chlorpromazine (8 mg/kg), promethazine (50 mg/kg), diphenhydramine (20 mg/kg), chlorphenylamine (20 mg/kg) and methamphetamine (2 mg/kg) decreased the emetic effect of motion sickness, but pyrilamine (20 mg/kg), meclizine (20 mg/kg) and dimenhydrinate (32 mg/kg) were not effective or very weak. These results indicate that the Suncus murinus is sensitive to the motion stimulus and antiemetic drugs are effective as prophylaxis. The Suncus murinus is useful as a new experimental animal model for motion sickness.

The dipteran parasitoid Emblemasoma auditrix locates its host acoustically. Analysis showed that phonotactic female flies usually carry fully developed larvae within their uteri. The mean number of larvae per female at the beginning of the season was 37.9 (range from 10 to 50). The number of larvae decreased rapidly with increasing singing activity of the host cicada (Okanagana rimosa). In high-density host populations the parasitoid is likely to become egg-limited. A possible selective phonotactic responsiveness depending on the number of larvae or the age of the female was tested with song models. Phonotaxis depended on both the temporal structure and the frequency content, but in the field no correlation was found between the number of larvae and the preferences for the acoustic signal. Experiments in the laboratory showed that flies without host contact broadened their phonotactic stimulus range with age.  相似文献

In an outside pot experiment, dry pig manure processed on pine sawdust litter and fermented for seven days by house fly larvae (fermented manure), and pine sawdust applied alone, and in combination with a spring application of inorganic nitrogen fertilizer were used to determine their effects on plant parasitic and free-living soil nematodes on sugar beets (cv. Antek). Non amended soil was used as a control. All treatments with fermented pig manure and sawdust with nitrogen fertilizer decreased number of plant parasitic nematodes and also root-fungal feeding nematodes compared to the untreated control. Sawdust applied alone had no effect on plant parasitic and root-fungal feeding nematode suppression. Free-living nematodes which were mainly bacteriovores and fungivores were significantly more abundant in soil amended with fermented pig manure, while the sawdust had no effect on these nematodes. The effect of all tested treatments on omnivores-predators was rather random, and in general, the number of these nematodes decreased after soil amendment applications compared to the untreated control.  相似文献

Two experiments in house mice (Mus domesticus) examined the neural sites at which steroid hormones activate the following male-typical behaviors: 70 kHz ultrasonic mating vocalizations in response to stimulus females or their urine, urinary marking in response to stimulus males or stimulus females, mounting of estrous females, and intermale aggression. In the first experiment, four groups of castrated males received bilateral intracranial implants of testosterone (T) into either the septum (SEPTUM), medial preoptic area (MPO), anterior hypothalamus (AHA), or ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH). Two control groups received subcutaneous silastic capsules of T (TSIL) or empty silastic capsules (BSIL). The TSIL males performed all behaviors at male-typical levels while the BSIL males were unresponsive. MPO males emitted ultrasonic mating vocalizations at high levels while few vocalizations were seen in males of the other brain implant groups. The VMH, AHA, and MPO males urine marked at higher levels than the BSIL males but did not exhibit the high levels of the TSIL males. Mounting was observed only in MPO and TSIL males. Aggression was rare in males from any of the brain implant groups. In the second experiment, the hormone activity of the implants was increased by using testosterone propionate (TP) or a 50% mixture of estradiol (E2) and cholesterol. The six groups were SEPTUMTP, SEPTUME2, MPOTP, MPOE2, TPSIL, and BSIL. The TPSIL males performed all behaviors at male-typical levels while the BSIL males were unresponsive. TP was effective at restoring vocalizations and urine marking only when placed in the MPO; however, E2 was effective at both sites. Again aggression and mounting were less evident in the brain implanted males. In conclusion, implants of T or TP were effective in restoring ultrasonic mating vocalization when placed into the MPO. MPO implants of T and TP were also effective in stimulating urine marking, although VMH and AHA implants also showed some effectiveness. The restorative effects of E2 were not localized which is probably related to the greater hormonal activity of this treatment. Comparisons of the properties of the various brain implants to restore more than one behavior were discussed.  相似文献

Valinomycin was administered to Musca domestica, Periplaneta americana, Aedes aegypti, and mice. Although topical application to house flies did not cause appreciable toxicity, the substance was highly toxic when injected or administered per os, characteristic nervous symptoms occurring in intoxicated flies. Injected valinomycin was almost equally toxic to cockroaches. Aedes aegypti larvae, on the other hand, were hardly affected by the substance. On the cockroach semi-isolated heart preparation, heart block occurred also at low concentrations.Preliminary trials showed that valinomycin abolished the response of leg muscles to both direct and indirect stimulation and interrupted conduction of stimulus on the nervous cord connectives.  相似文献

Knowledge of the population fluctuation and spatial distribution of pests is fundamental for establishing an appropriate control method. The population fluctuation and spatial distribution of the Alphitobius diaperinus in a poultry house in Cascavel, in the state of Parana, Brazil, was studied between October, 2001 and October 2002. Larvae and adults of the lesser mealworm were sampled weekly using Arends tube traps (n = 22) for six consecutive flock grow-outs. The temperature of the litter and of the poultry house was measured at the same locations of the tube traps. Beetle numbers increased continuously throughout all the sampling dates (average 5,137 in the first week and 18,494 insects on the sixth week). Significantly greater numbers of larvae were collected than adults (1 to 20 times in 95% of the sampling points). There was no correlation between temperature and the number of larvae and adults collected, therefore no fluctuation was observed during the sampling period. The population growth was correlated to litter re-use. The highest temperatures were observed in deep litter. The spatial distribution of larvae and adults in the poultry house was heterogeneous during the whole period of evaluation. Results suggest that monitoring in poultry houses is necessary prior to adopting and evaluating control measures due to the great variability of the insect distribution in the poultry house.  相似文献

Ascidians are lower chordates and their simple tadpole-like larvae share a basic body plan with vertebrates. Newly hatched larvae show no response to a stimulus of light. 4 h after hatching, the larvae were induced to swim upon a step-down of light and stop swimming upon a step-up of light. At weaker intensity of light, the larvae show the same response to a stimulus after presentation of repeated stimuli. When intensity of actinic light was increased, the larvae show sensitization and habituation of the swimming response to a stimulus after repeated stimuli of step-down and step-up of the light. Between 2 h 20 min and 3 h 40 min after hatching the larvae did not show any response to the first stimulus, but after several repeatedstimuli they show swimming response to a step-down of light. A repeated series of stimulus cause sensitization. Between 4 h and 7 h after hatching, the larvae show photoresponse to the first stimulus, but after several repetition of the stimuli, the larvae could not stop swimming to a stimulus of a step-up of the actinic light. A repeated series of stimulus cause greaterhabituation. Both sensitization and habituation depend upon intensity ofactinic light.  相似文献

Assessments were made on the influence of several microclimatic variables on the availability of third-stage larvae of Haemonchus contortus and Haemonchus placei on four strata of irrigated Kikuyu pasture. Three replicates of these pasture samples were collected on 18 sample days over 12 months and the log10 mean counts of the larvae recovered were analysed by a step-wise regression model. Predictors for the log counts of the four strata for the two nematode species included relative humidity, illumination, air temperature and windspeed. The effect of air temperature on larvae of both Haemonchus species was similar; as air temperature increased, the number of larvae on pasture increased. The inverse was true for windspeed; as windspeed increased larval counts decreased. For H. contortus, relative humidity increased as the number of larvae increased on all strata except upper herbage. The R2 values ranged from 0.11 to 0.21 for H. contortus and from 0.04 to 0.12 for H. placei. Under the conditions of this study, only 21% of the effect on H. contortus and 12% on H. placei third-stage larvae on pasture can be explained by microclimatic conditions.  相似文献

Several biological and physical factors which may influence infection of Biomphalaria glabrata snails with the first stage larvae of Angiostrongylus cantonensis were studied. These factors were: the size of snails, the number of first stage larvae to which snails were exposed, the age of larvae, individual exposure compared with mass exposure of snails, the length of exposure period and the effect of temperature and light. The results showed that young snails, 2 mm in diameter, became infected with significantly smaller numbers of third stage larvae than larger snails (4, 8, 12 and 16 mm). No significant differences in the intensity of infection were evident between the larger size groups. The number of third stage larvae recovered from snails was directly related to the number of first stage larvae to which the snails were exposed. The mean percentage recovery per snail was more or less constant regardless of the infective dose. First stage larvae showed a slight reduction in their survival rate within 7 and 4 days, at 24 degrees C and 26 degrees C respectively, after which a sharp decrease in their survival rate occurred. However, the infectivity of larvae was progressively reduced from the second day at these two temperatures. The mean intensity of infection in snails was independent of whether the infection was by mass or individual exposure. The average number of first stage larvae entering a snail was greatest during the first half hour of exposure, this decreased considerably during the second half hour, and thereafter the number of larvae which entered a snail was low. It was concluded that 26 degrees C was the optimal temperature for infection and that the presence or absence of light had no effect on the infection.  相似文献

European corn borer (ECB) neonate larvae are capable of orienting towards maize odours and of avoiding spinach odours. We previously reported that maize odours’ attraction was dependent on the stimulus regime. This led us to propose that maize odours could have a repellent or attractive effect depending on their concentration. In this work, we tested this hypothesis by evaluating attraction or avoidance of neonate ECB larvae to four concentrations of each of six single green leaf volatiles (GLVs); these are commonly found in maize and other plants. We found a dose‐dependent effect for all of these GLVs with the exception of 1‐hexyl acetate, which did not elicit any orientation behaviour over the range of concentrations tested. These five GLVs were repellent at high concentrations, while two of them were attractive at a lower concentration. These observations indicate for the first time that plant odours induce different behaviours in ECB neonate larvae depending not only on their chemical identity but also their concentration.  相似文献

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans arrests development at the first larval stage if food is not present upon hatching. Larvae in this stage provide an excellent model for studying stress responses during development. We found that supplementing starved larvae with ethanol markedly extends their lifespan within this L1 diapause. The effects of ethanol-induced lifespan extension can be observed when the ethanol is added to the medium at any time between 0 and 10 days after hatching. The lowest ethanol concentration that extended lifespan was 1 mM (0.005%); higher concentrations to 68 mM (0.4%) did not result in increased survival. In spite of their extended survival, larvae did not progress to the L2 stage. Supplementing starved cultures with n-propanol and n-butanol also extended lifespan, but methanol and isopropanol had no measurable effect. Mass spectrometry analysis of nematode fatty acids and amino acids revealed that L1 larvae can incorporate atoms from ethanol into both types of molecules. Based on these data, we suggest that ethanol supplementation may extend the lifespan of L1 larvae by either serving as a carbon and energy source and/or by inducing a stress response.  相似文献

We evaluated the effects of X-ray irradiation on larvae of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), with the aim of finding a treatment that prevented adult fly emergence, yet did not adversely affect larval quality as rearing hosts for the parasitoid Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). Two experiments were carried out. In the first experiment, small numbers of larvae were held in Petri dishes with and without small amounts of rearing media and then irradiated with doses of X-rays ranging from 0 to 8333.6 R (equivalent to 80 Gy). In the second experiment, higher numbers of larvae were held in a manner resembling mass-rearing conditions, and were then irradiated with X-rays ranging from 0 to 10,417 R (equivalent to 100 Gy). In both experiments, the only factor that significantly affected fly emergence was irradiation of larvae. Fly emergence decreased markedly as the irradiation dose increased, and complete suppression of fly emergence was achieved at 6250.2 R (equivalent to 60 Gy) when larvae were irradiated in small batches with or without rearing media. Irradiation also affected the fertility of those flies that did emerge following treatment. In the second experiment, we found the parasitoids reared from irradiated larvae produced a higher parasitism rate and a higher number of female offspring than did parasitoids reared from control (non-irradiated) larvae. Mean fecundity of F1 parasitoids reared from irradiated larvae were affected positively by irradiation only at the 8333.6 R (80 Gy) dose. Our results show that X-ray irradiation can be used to inhibit fruit fly adult emergence and that irradiated larvae are at least as good a rearing substrate as non-irradiated larvae. Future studies should focus on the adjustment of our findings to a mass-rearing scale.  相似文献

1. Females of Chlosyne lacinia (Geyer) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae, Melitaenae), the bordered patch butterfly, clump eggs in a few large clusters on their host plant, Helianthus annuus. Resulting larvae form sibling aggregations to at least the third instar.
2. The effect of group size on survival and development of C. lacinia larvae was tested experimentally in the field. Larvae developed faster and survived better in larger groups.
3. The effects of various predator guilds (ground-dwelling arthropods, aerial arthropods and avian predators) on survival of larvae was then tested while controlling group size. Ground-dwelling arthropods, mainly fire ants Solenopsis xyloni , reduced larval survival greatly but other solitary invertebrate and avian predators did not alter survival. Group defences and aposematism of C. lacinia larvae are probably ineffective against predatory ants that attack en masse and recruit other colony members.
4. In laboratory experiments, two possible mechanisms underlying faster development of larvae in larger groups were tested: (i) overcoming the physical toughness of host plant leaves, and (ii) social stimulus to feed. Results support the physical toughness hypothesis but not the social stimulus hypothesis.
5. Feeding in large groups by C. lacinia larvae confers multiple advantages, including protection from solitary predators and increased feeding efficiency because grouped, early-instar larvae can initiate feeding wounds on tough sunflower leaves. These advantages of larval gregariousness, coupled with reduced desiccation at the egg stage, apparently outweigh disadvantages of aggregation, such as interference and exploitative competition among larvae.  相似文献
