Skrjabinoclava inornatae Wong & Anderson, 1987 was found in one of five adult greater yellowlegs Tringa melanoleuca collected near Framboise, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. This is the first report of a member of the genus in this host. The infection is regarded as sporadic and a further indication that the host distribution of members of Skrjabinoclava may be determined more by host foraging behaviour than host specificity.

Pectinospirura argentata Wehr, 1933, Skrjabinoclava andersoni n. sp. and acuariid larvae, collected from the proventriculus of the kelp gull Larus dominicanus from coastal Buenos Aires, Argentina, are described. This is the first record of the genus Pectinospirura Wehr, 1933 from South America and from the kelp gull. The measurements of both sexes are given because there are some differences with previously described specimens of P. argentata; the male is smaller with smaller spicules and the female is larger with smaller eggs. Skrjabinoclava andersoni n. sp. can be distinguished for all other species in the genus by the morphology of both spicules and by the cuticle which is not inflated anteriorly. This genus is reported for the first time in the kelp gull and from Argentina.

In this article, we describe a new species of Himasthla Dietz, 1909 (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) from Larus dominicanus Lichtenstein (Aves: Laridae) in northern Patagonia, Argentina. We also describe the hosts, localities, and key diagnostic features and the measurements of the so far 25 described species. Of these species. Himasthla militaris, H. leptosoma, H. elongata, H. secunda, H. megacotyla, H. multilecithosa, H. piscicola, H. compacta, H. schachtachtinskoi, H. littorinae, H. continua, H. avosettae, and H. interrupta are similar to H. escamosa n. sp. in having 29 head collar spines. Himasthla leptosoma, H. piscicola, H. multilecithosa, H. interrupta, H. continua, and H. militaris can be differentiated from the new species mainly by the extension of the vitellaria. Himasthla avosettae, H. megacotyla, H. elongata, H. compacta, and H. littorinae have a different size or arrangement (or both) of head collar spines compared with H. escamosa. Himasthla secunda can be distinguished from H. escamosa n. sp. in having a larger body, testes, and ovary and a different position of the ovary. The comparison with H. schachtachtinskoi could not be done because the bibliography was not available. This is the first record of the genus in Argentina and from L. dominicanus.

Several phylogeographic studies of seabirds have documented low genetic diversity that has been attributed to bottleneck events or individual capacity for dispersal. Few studies have been done in seabirds on the Brazilian coast and all have shown low genetic differentiation on a wide geographic scale. The Kelp Gull is a common species with a wide distribution in the Southern Hemisphere. In this study, we used mitochondrial and nuclear markers to examine the genetic variability of Kelp Gull populations on the Brazilian coast and compared this variability with that of sub-Antarctic island populations of this species. Kelp Gulls showed extremely low genetic variability for mitochondrial markers (cytb and ATPase) and high diversity for a nuclear locus (intron 7 of the β-fibrinogen). The intraspecific evolutionary history of Kelp Gulls showed that the variability found in intron 7 of the β-fibrinogen gene was compatible with the variability expected under neutral evolution but suggested an increase in population size during the last 10,000 years. However, none of the markers revealed evidence of a bottleneck population. These findings indicate that the recent origin of Kelp Gulls is the main explanation for their nuclear diversity, although selective pressure on the mtDNA of this species cannot be discarded.

Nine polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated, using tetranucleotide repeat oligonucleotide probes from an enriched DNA library of the globally "vulnerable" Saunders's gull (Larus saundersi), collected from the Yancheng coastal wetland, one of the three remaining breeding sites in China. Six breast muscle tissues and 16 blood samples from 22 gulls and eight eggshell membrane tissues were collected for this analysis. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 4 to 15, with a mean of 8.9. The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.58 to 0.89 and 0.58 to 0.9, with means of 0.77 and 0.81, respectively. No significant linkage disequilibrium and no divergence from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were detected among these loci. Based on Micro-Checker tests, no null alleles are present at any of the loci. The microsatellite loci described here will be valuable for exploring population genetic structure and for other relevant genetic studies of Saunders's gull.

Nest site selection of Kelp gulls Larus dominicanus breeding in Conejo and Bridges islands, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, was assessed between 14 and 30 December 2005 to describe variability in nest site features and determine variables affecting nest choice. Fourteen microhabitat variables were quantified at 40 nest sites and at 40 random points in each island during the late incubation stage. Nests at the two colonies were placed on different kinds of substrates across areas with varying degrees of cover provided either by rocks or vegetation. Despite the variability observed in nest site features, rock cover and rocky substrates were the main factors determining nest site selection. At Conejo Island, nest sites presented more rock cover, less percentage of vegetation cover and of vegetation debris substrate, and were placed further from the nearest vegetation in comparison to random points. Similarly, gulls at Bridges Island selected nest sites with more rock cover which were placed mainly on rocky and vegetation substrates. This contrasts with results previously obtained in Argentina, which indicated that vegetation is a key factor influencing Kelp gull nest site selection. Over 80% of the nests at both study colonies were placed on the northern slopes of the islands, relatively more protected from the strong prevailing southwest winds, and nests at both colonies tended to be more protected on their southern side either by rocks or vegetation. Results obtained at Tierra del Fuego confirm the plasticity of microhabitat use by Kelp gulls, and their ability to take advantage of nesting sites according to availability and local environmental factors.

Eudromoxyura aspiculuris (Boero &; Led, 1971) is a parasite of a tinamid bird in Argentina. This is the type and only one known speices so far described in the genus Eudromoxyura Anderson &; Prestwood, 1972. It is here redescribed, and Eudromoxyura elonbyrdi Anderson &; Prestwood 1972 is considered a synonym. The morphological characters and systematic position of the genus Eudromoxyura are discussed. The genera Syphaciella (Mönning, 1920) and Eudromoxyura, the only oxyurids known parasitising birds, have probably arisen independently.

Microtopographic features of the various growth stages of the three free-living larval stages of the rat hookworm Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Nematoda) were surveyed by scanning electron microscopy. These worms have a rounded anterior end and an elongated tail. Cuticular annulations were observed along the body, which also bore two ribbon-like lateral alae. Two rings of six lip-like lappets were observed around the triradiate oral opening in all larval stages. The cephalic space contained two lateral amphidial pits. The excretory pore in the third anterior part was observed in a ventral view of the larvae. No deirids were observed. The anus with a crescent-shape opening was located posteriorly. Phasmidial apertures, only observed in the third-stage larvae, opened on the lateral alae in the tail region.

In the present paper we describe a new species of the genus Sciadiocara from Haematopus palliatus from the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (37°46S, 57°27W), Argentina. We provide two host records (H. palliatus and Larus dominicanus) for the genus, both from Buenos Aires province, Argentina. S. haematopodi n. sp. closely resembles S. legendrei Petter, 1967. The new species can be distinguished by the morphology of the distal end of the left spicule, the shorter length of the right spicule, the number of pre- anal papillae and the ratio of the length of the vagina vera to the length of the vagina uterina.

The Trichostrongylina parasitic in the leaf-eared mouse Phyllotis sp. (Sigmodontinae) from the Province of Catamarca, Argentina are studied. Three new species of Stilestrongylus Freitas, Lent and Almeida, 1937 (Heligmosomoidea: Heligmonellidae: Nippostrongylinae) are described. Stilestrongylus andalgala n. sp. is distinguished from the most closely related species S. moreli Diaw, 1976 parasitic in Auliscomys boliviensis from Bolivia, by the absence of a common trunk of right rays 2 and 3, by left ray 4 shorter than ray 5, and by the shape of the female tail, without a mucron. Stilestrongylus catamarca n. sp. is distinguished from all the other species in the genus by hypertrophied rays 2, larger than rays 3, and from the closely related species Stilestrongylus barusi Durette-Desset, 1971, parasitic in Sigmodontomys alfari from Colombia, by right ray 4 longer than ray 5 and left ray 4 shorter than ray 5, by a larger spicule length/body length ratio (22.6% vs. 7.2%), and by the presence of a mucron on the female tail. Stilestrongylus gracielae n. sp. most closely resembles Stilestrongylus azarai Durette-Desset and Sutton, 1985, parasitic in Akodon azarae and in Graomys griseoflavus, and Stilestrongylus franciscanus Digiani and Durette-Desset, 2003, also parasitic in G. griseoflavus, both from Argentina. These latter differ from the new species by the right lobe of the caudal bursa: in S. azarai rays 4, 5 and 6 arise at same level from their common trunk and in S. franciscanus right rays 4 and 5 diverge at their distal extremity. Lamanema chavezi Becklund, 1963 (Molineoidea: Molineinae), a parasite of South American camelids, is reported in rodents for the second time.

A total of 1,177 lice of four species were collected from 124 kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) and 137 lice of the same four species from 60 Franklin's gulls (Larus pipixcan). The louse Saemundssonia lari (O Fabricius) (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) was the most numerous on both gull species, with infestation rates of 4.9 on kelp gulls and 1.8 on Franklin's gulls. The second most abundant louse was Quadraceps punctatus (Burmeister), with a high infestation rate but low prevalence on kelp gulls; those parameters were much lower among lice from Franklin's gulls. The composition and community structure of the lice were similar on both host species, but not their infestation rates. In addition, the feather mite Zachvatkinia larica Mironov (Acari: Avenzoariidae) is recorded from kelp gulls and Franklin's gulls for the first time, while the gamasid mite Larinyssus sp. is recorded from kelp gulls, also for the first time. The population parameters of all species of ectoparasites are discussed.

Polymerase chain reaction was used to amplify and sequence a 710-bp region of the mtDNA protein-encoding gene, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, in nine nematodes belonging to the order Strongylida, one nematode from the order Rhabditida and two nematodes from the order Ascaridida. This study tested the hypothesis that in the Strongylida, tissue migration in orally infecting nematodes reflects a legacy of skin penetrating strategies of host infection that were retained after an oral route of infection became established (percutaneous transmission model). Phylogenetic analyses (NJ, MP, ML) consistently produced a single tree topology with two clades within the Strongylida, one containing nematodes that incorporated tissue migration as part of their life cycles, and the other containing nematodes with no tissue migration. Our analysis concluded that the ancestral Strongylida possessed skin penetrating and tissue migrating characters that were modified as members of the group progressed along one of two evolutionary pathways. In one pathway, skin penetration was lost but tissue migration was retained as the nematodes evolved an oral infection route. In the other, both skin penetration and tissue migration characters were lost as the nematodes evolved an oral infection route. These data support the hypothesis of percutaneous transmission as being ancestral in the Strongylida.

Acanthotrema armata n. sp. (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) is described from the gut of Larus audouinii Payraudeau (Aves: Laridae) caught on the Chafarinas Islands in the southwestern Mediterranean (Spain). This trematode differs from other species of Acanthotrema Travassos, 1928 in having two spined, sclerotised pieces in the ventrogenital sac and in the position of the genital pore. Parastictodora Martin, 1950 is considered a synonym of Acanthotrema. As the diagnosis of the genus Acanthotrema was based only on its type-species, it is amended to include the characteristics of the new species and those attributed to Parastictodora.

Specimens of the rat hookworm, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Nematoda) were recovered from lungs (third- and fourth-stage larvae) and intestine (fourth-stage larvae and adults). The following features were studied in the different stages by scanning electron microscopy: cephalic structures, especially sense organs, synlophe, cervical region, and caudal part. The main differences between the third and fourth stages concerned the lip-like structures around the oral aperture, the appearance of the cephalic space with the presence of a cephalic cap in fourth-stage larvae, the pattern of longitudinal ridges, and sexual differentiation. Pore-like papillae, not seen in third-stage larvae, developed in later stages. Deirids were observed only in adults, and phasmids were poorly discerned. Some of these morphological features, such as the cephalic sense organ apertures and cuticle pores and micropores, can be observed only by scanning electron microscop y. The possible functions of these different structures and their relationship with the behavior of the worms during their life cycle are discussed.

Syncuaria mycteriae n. sp. (Nematoda: Acuarioidea) was collected under the lining of the gizzard of a wood stork, Mycteria americana L., from the Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The new species can be distinguished from all known species of Syncuaria by having irregular dotted ornamentations on the caudal alae of males, a complex distal end of the left spicule comprising 3 protuberances, and a spicule ratio of 1:9.3. Preliminary phylogenetic analysis of 11 Syncuaria spp. based on 9 morphological characters produced 2 equally parsimonious cladograms with a consistency index of 85%, differing only in the placement of S. hargilae. The phylogenetic analysis suggests that the new species is the sister species of S. leptoptili, whose male members have a single protuberance on the left spicule. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that the plesiomorphic host group for the genus is Ciconiiformes, specifically Ciconiidae (host for 5 species), with 2 species occurring in Threskiornithidae (also Ciconiiformes), possibly as a result of cospeciation, and 2 species each occurring in Pelecaniformes and Podicipediformes, resulting from 4 episodes of speciation by host switching.

The genus Hemicycliophora (Nematoda: Hemicycliophoridae) contains 132 valid species of plant‐parasitic nematodes, collectively known as ‘sheath nematodes’. Hemicycliophora spp. are characterized morphologically by a long stylet with rounded basal knobs and a cuticular sheath, present in juvenile and adult stages. Populations of 20 valid and 14 putative species of Hemicycliophora and Loofia from several countries were characterized morphologically using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and molecularly using the D2‐D3 segments of 28S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rRNA gene sequences. LM and SEM observations provided new details on the morphology of these species. PCR‐restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR‐RFLPs) of the D2‐D3 of 28S rDNA were proposed for identification of the species. Phylogenetic relationships within populations of 36 species of the genus Hemicycliophora using 102 D2‐D3 of 28S rDNA and 97 ITS rRNA gene sequences as inferred from Bayesian analysis are reconstructed and discussed. Ancestral state reconstructions of diagnostic characters (body and stylet length, number of body annuli, shape of vulval lip and tail), using maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference, revealed that none of the traits are individually reliable characters for classifying the studied sheath nematode. The Shimodaira–Hasegawa test rejected the validity of the genus Loofia. This is the most complete phylogenetic analysis of Hemicycliophora species conducted so far. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London
