According to recent molecular phylogenetic data, the rare Australian endemic Maundia triglochinoides does not form a clade with taxa traditionally classified as members of Juncaginaceae. Therefore, views on the morphological evolution and taxonomy of Alismatales require re‐assessment. As the morphology of Maundia is poorly known and some key features have been controversially described in the literature, the flowers, fruits, inflorescence axes and peduncles were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Inflorescences are bractless spikes with flowers arranged in trimerous whorls. Except in the inflorescence tip (where the flower groundplan is variable), flowers possess two tepals in transversal‐abaxial positions, six stamens in two trimerous whorls and four carpels in median and transversal positions. Fruits are indehiscent. The shared possession of orthotropous ovules supports the molecular phylogenetic placement of Maundia as sister to a large clade including Potamogetonaceae and related families. Maundia and Aponogeton spp. share the same highly unusual floral groundplan, a homoplastic similarity that can be explained by spatial constraints in developing inflorescences. The nucellar coenocyte of Maundia appears to be unique among monocots. As Maundia exhibits a mosaic of features characteristic of other families of tepaloid core Alismatales, its segregation as a separate family is plausible. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 173 , 12–45. 相似文献

Similarity among the floral scents of hawkmoth-pollinated plants was investigated with headspace samplings. Six of seven plant
species belonging to different families were found to be rich in isoprenoids, among which linalool was the most common compound.
Linalool showed rhythmicity with a nocturnal increase inLonicera japonica. These findings suggest that linalool is a common attractant for nocturnal hawkmoths. However, the composition of other isoprenoids,
benzenoids and fatty acid derivatives varied markedly among the plant species examined. There was a significant correlation
between species composition of flower-visiting hawkmoths and specific floral scents, suggesting that attractiveness to each

Female flower and fruit anatomy, including vasculature, are studied for the first time in Tetroncium (Juncaginaceae: Alismatales). Other members of Juncaginaceae (and the relatively close Maundiaceae) possess a peculiar type of gynoecium with pronounced carpel fusion via the floral centre. Their carpels are supplied by individual vascular traces and can be interpreted either as synascidiate (if viewed as horizontally inserted) or free and plicate (if viewed as obliquely inserted on an elongated receptacle). In Tetroncium, the gynoecium is tetracarpellate and clearly has a well‐developed synascidiate zone with septa formed by united flanks of adjacent carpels. The gynoecium of Tetroncium is supplied by a common ring of vascular tissue that splits into dorsal and heterocarpellary ventral (synventral) bundles, a condition that can be expected in a typical syncarpous gynoecium. The fruit is indehiscent and contains one or two seeds. The syncarpy of Tetroncium is of functional significance for fruit formation, as it allows the thin septa to be distorted, thus providing more space for the developing seed(s). The occurrence of typical syncarpy in Tetroncium provides further evidence for the highly homoplastic evolution of gynoecium characters in the early‐divergent monocot order Alismatales. Either the similarity between gynoecia of Maundiaceae and Triglochin (Juncaginaceae) is due to parallel evolution or the syncarpy of Tetroncium should be viewed as secondarily derived. In the latter scenario, fusion via the floral centre is probably a synapomorphy of core Alismatales (Helobiae) and more typical syncarpy evolved independently in several lineages, such as Scheuchzeria, Tetroncium and Butomus/Hydrocharitaceae. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: On the basis of molecular evidence Berberidopsidaceae have been linked with Aextoxicaceae in an order Berberidopsidales at the base of the core Eudicots. The floral development of Berberidopsis is central to the understanding of the evolution of floral configurations at the transition of the basal Eudicots to the core Eudicots. It lies at the transition of trimerous or dimerous, simplified apetalous forms into pentamerous, petaliferous flowers. METHODS: The floral ontogeny of Berberidopsis was studied with a scanning electron microscope. KEY RESULTS: Flowers are grouped in terminal racemes with variable development. The relationship between the number of tepals, stamens and carpels is more or less fixed and floral initiation follows a strict 2/5 phyllotaxis. Two bracteoles, 12 tepals, eight stamens and three carpels are initiated in a regular sequence. The number of stamens can be increased by a doubling of stamen positions. CONCLUSIONS: The floral ontogeny of Berberidopsis provides support for the shift in floral bauplan from the basal Eudicots to the core Eudicots as a transition of a spiral flower with a 2/5 phyllotaxis to pentamerous flowers with two perianth whorls, two stamen whorls and a single carpel whorl. The differentiation of sepals and petals from bracteotepals is discussed and a comparison is made with other Eudicots with a similar configuration and development. Depending on the resolution of the relationships among the basalmost core Eudicots it is suggested that Berberidopsis either represents a critical stage in the evolution of pentamerous flowers of major clades of Eudicots, or has a floral prototype that may be at the base of evolution of flowers of other core Eudicots. The distribution of a floral Bauplan in other clades of Eudicots similar to Berberidopsidales is discussed. 相似文献

The domestication of cattle fuelled the development of agricultural society in the history of human being.The evolution and genetic relationship of cattle can be elucidated by investigating the variation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D-loop sequence.In this study,we built a cattle phylogeny with a pool of 856 individual D-loop sequences,of which 264 Chinese cattle D-loop sequences were obtained in this study (141 ones were first analyzed,and 123 were first submitted) and the rest sequences of cattle from six Asian countries (Japan,Korea,Mongolia,Nepal,India and China) were retrieved from GenBank.Our results indicated that cattle from six Asian countries fell into three clades,Bos taurus (taurine),Bos indicus (zebu) and yak.Four main haplogroups T1A,T2,T3 (including T3A and T3B) and T5 were found in taurine,and two haplogroups I1 and I2 in zebu.Furthermore,we found that I1 and I2 haplogroups were separated by four variable sites rather than five ones and four haplogroups or sub-haplogroups of T1A,T3A,T3B and T5 were found for the first time in these Asian cattle.These data brought us a new insight into cattle's genetic structure in these six Asian countries.The geographical distribution of haplogroups was also outlined to provide systematic information on cattle genetic resources. 相似文献

The nerve cell is a eumetazoan (cnidarians and bilaterians) synapomorphy [1]; this cell type is absent in sponges, a more ancient phyletic lineage. Here, we demonstrate that despite lacking neurons, the sponge Amphimedon queenslandica expresses the Notch-Delta signaling system and a proneural basic helix loop helix (bHLH) gene in a manner that resembles the conserved molecular mechanisms of primary neurogenesis in bilaterians. During Amphimedon development, a field of subepithelial cells expresses the Notch receptor, its ligand Delta, and a sponge bHLH gene, AmqbHLH1. Cells that migrate out of this field express AmqDelta1 and give rise to putative sensory cells that populate the larval epithelium. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that AmqbHLH1 is descendent from a single ancestral bHLH gene that later duplicated to produce the atonal/neurogenin-related bHLH gene families, which include most bilaterian proneural genes [2]. By way of functional studies in Xenopus and Drosophila, we demonstrate that AmqbHLH1 has a strong proneural activity in both species with properties displayed by both neurogenin and atonal genes. From these results, we infer that the bilaterian neurogenic circuit, comprising proneural atonal-related bHLH genes coupled with Notch-Delta signaling, was functional in the very first metazoans and was used to generate an ancient sensory cell type. 相似文献

Formation of inclusion complexes between the beta-cyclodextrin and the potassium salt of o-, m-, and p-substituted monosulfonated triphenylphosphine derivatives was investigated in aqueous solution by NMR spectroscopy. Titration and continuous variation plots obtained from 31P and 1H NMR data indicate the formation of a 1:1 inclusion complex for the three phosphine isomers. T-ROESY NMR experiments show that in all cases a non-sulfonated aromatic ring was included into the hydrophobic cavity of beta-cyclodextrin from the secondary hydroxyl groups side. The standard enthalpy and entropy of the inclusion process were estimated from the temperature dependence of the association constant. All inclusion complexes were enthalpy stabilized, but highly entropy destabilized. 相似文献

We have initiated a project aimed at documenting molecular and cellular changes underlying the emergence of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal axis in Chordates. Considering the phylogenetic position of Tunicates and the 'pan-hypophyseal' expression pattern of Pitx genes in Vertebrate pituitary, we searched for a Pitx-related homeobox gene in the ascidian Ciona intestinalis, and identified Ci-Pitx (ona intestinalis uitary homeobo gene). We also isolated Cs-Pitx and Bs-Pitx, the Ci-Pitx respective counterparts of Ciona savignyi and Botryllus schlosseri, two other Tunicate species. Ci-Pitx mRNA encodes a putative protein exhibiting the diagnostic K50-Paired-class homeodomain and a conserved C-terminal Aristaless domain. Embryonic expression pattern of Ci-Pitx revealed a conserved expression domain in the anterior neural ridge and subsequently in the pharyngeal primordium, defined in Vertebrates as the stomodeal ectomere, which encompasses the presumptive pituitary territory. This shows that expression at early steps of pituitary development is a feature of Pitx-related genes that was already present in the last common ancestor of Chordates. 相似文献

Bacterial aromatic ring-hydroxylating oxygenases (RHOs) are multicomponent enzyme systems which have potential utility in bioremediation of aromatic compounds in the environment. To cope with the enormous diversity of aromatic compounds in the environment, this enzyme family has evolved remarkably exhibiting broad substrate specificity. RHOs are multicomponent enzymes comprising of a homo- or hetero-multimeric terminal oxygenase and one or more electron transport (ET) protein(s). The present study attempts in depicting the evolutionary scenarios that might have occurred during the evolution of RHOs, by analyzing a set of available sequences including those obtained from complete genomes. A modified classification scheme identifying four new RHO types has been suggested on the basis of their evolutionary and functional behaviours, in relation to structural configuration of substrates and preferred oxygenation site(s). The present scheme emphasizes on the fact that the phylogenetic affiliation of RHOs is distributed among four distinct 'Similarity classes', independent of the constituent ET components. Similar combination of RHO components that was previously considered to be equivalent and classified together [Kweon et al., BMC Biochemistry 9, 11 (2008)] were found here in distinct similarity classes indicating the role of substrate-binding terminal oxygenase in guiding the evolution of RHOs irrespective of the nature of constituent ET components. Finally, a model for evolution of the multicomponent RHO enzyme system has been proposed, beginning from genesis of the terminal oxygenase components followed by recruitment of constituent ET components, finally evolving into various 'extant' RHO types. 相似文献

Plant genomes are complex and contain large amounts of repetitive DNA including microsatellites that are distributed across entire genomes. Whole genome sequences of several monocot and dicot plants that are available in the public domain provide an opportunity to study the origin, distribution and evolution of microsatellites, and also facilitate the development of new molecular markers. In the present investigation, a genome-wide analysis of microsatellite distribution in monocots (Brachypodium, sorghum and rice) and dicots (Arabidopsis, Medicago and Populus) was performed. A total of 797,863 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were identified in the whole genome sequences of six plant species. Characterization of these SSRs revealed that mono-nucleotide repeats were the most abundant repeats, and that the frequency of repeats decreased with increase in motif length both in monocots and dicots. However, the frequency of SSRs was higher in dicots than in monocots both for nuclear and chloroplast genomes. Interestingly, GC-rich repeats were the dominant repeats only in monocots, with the majority of them being present in the coding region. These coding GC-rich repeats were found to be involved in different biological processes, predominantly binding activities. In addition, a set of 22,879 SSR markers that were validated by e-PCR were developed and mapped on different chromosomes in Brachypodium for the first time, with a frequency of 101 SSR markers per Mb. Experimental validation of 55 markers showed successful amplification of 80% SSR markers in 16 Brachypodium accessions. An online database 'BraMi' (Brachypodium microsatellite markers) of these genome-wide SSR markers was developed and made available in the public domain. The observed differential patterns of SSR marker distribution would be useful for studying microsatellite evolution in a monocot-dicot system. SSR markers developed in this study would be helpful for genomic studies in Brachypodium and related grass species, especially for the map based cloning of the candidate gene(s). 相似文献

When flowers were placed equidistant from each other, the bees maintained high degrees of constancy to one flower colour. The placement of Nartheciaceae within Dioscoreales is an unexpected result of molecular phylogenetics. Nartheciaceae generally differs from the rest of Dioscoreales in having less specialized flowers. Studies of this family are important to elucidate the evolutionary history of the order. Using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy, we describe the details of the flower structure, initiation, and development in Metanarthecium, which is unique amongst Nartheciaceae in possessing both an almost superior ovary and septal nectaries. This is the first member of Dioscoreales for which all stages of organogenesis have been studied. Within Nartheciaceae, the presence/absence of septal nectaries and the position of the ovary are labile. The presence of post‐genital fusion in the gynoecium correlates with the presence of septal nectaries. Septal nectary morphology is complicated in Metanarthecium, which raises the question of whether its floral structure (including superior ovary) is plesiomorphic within Dioscoreales. The septal nectaries of Metanarthecium show homoplastic similarity with those of Allium (Asparagales). The presence/absence of a compitum is probably variable at the infraspecific level in Metanarthecium as a result of alternative possibilities of post‐genital fusion between ventral carpel margins. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 158 , 1–18. 相似文献
