Wild ruminants are susceptible to infection from generalist helminth species, which can also infect domestic ruminants. A better understanding is required of the conditions under which wild ruminants can act as a source of helminths (including anthelmintic-resistant genotypes) for domestic ruminants, and vice versa, with the added possibility that wildlife could act as refugia for drug-susceptible genotypes and hence buffer the spread and development of resistance. Helminth infections cause significant productivity losses in domestic ruminants and a growing resistance to all classes of anthelmintic drug escalates concerns around helminth infection in the livestock industry. Previous research demonstrates that drug-resistant strains of the pathogenic nematode Haemonchus contortus can be transmitted between wild and domestic ruminants, and that gastro-intestinal nematode infections are more intense in wild ruminants within areas of high livestock density. In this article, the factors likely to influence the role of wild ruminants in helminth infections and anthelmintic resistance in livestock are considered, including host population movement across heterogeneous landscapes, and the effects of climate and environment on parasite dynamics. Methods of predicting and validating suspected drivers of helminth transmission in this context are considered based on advances in predictive modelling and molecular tools.  相似文献

Serum samples from 210 wild ruminants collected between 2006 and 2007 in southern Spain were tested for antibodies against bluetongue virus (BTV) by means of a competitive ELISA assay. Eighty-seven of the 210 wild ruminants analysed (41%) showed antibodies against BTV. Statistically significant differences were found in the seroprevalence among species: 66% (65 of 98) for red deer (Cervus elaphus), 50% (ten of 20) for fallow deer (Dama dama), 33% (three of nine) for mouflon (Ovis aries musimon) and 11% (nine of 83) for Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica). Overall, the sites where seropositive wild ruminants were found coincide with the areas where BTV had been detected in livestock, but in eastern Sierra Morena, the virus circulated in wild ruminants, although it had not been detected in domestic ruminants in the same areas. Wild ruminants over 1-year of age (sub-adults and adults) had significantly higher seroprevalences than juvenile animals. Statistically significant differences were also observed between BTV seroprevalence and management (free-ranging vs. captivity) with higher prevalence in free-ranging animals. The high seroprevalences obtained suggest that BTV is widespread in wild ruminants in southern Spain. This factor could have an important influence on the evolution of the infection in domestic livestock and indicates the need to include wild ruminant species in BTV surveillance or control programs. Comparative physiology applies methods established in domestic animal science to a wider variety of species. This can lead to improved insight into evolutionary adaptations of domestic animals, by putting domestic species into a broader context. Examples include the variety of responses to seasonally fluctuating environments, different adaptations to heat and drought, and in particular adaptations to herbivory and various herbivore niches. Herbivores generally face the challenge that a high food intake compromises digestive efficiency (by reducing ingesta retention time and time available for selective feeding and for food comminution), and a variety of digestive strategies have evolved in response. Ruminants are very successful herbivores. They benefit from potential advantages of a forestomach without being constrained in their food intake as much as other foregut fermenters, because of their peculiar reticuloruminal sorting mechanism that retains food requiring further digestion but clears the forestomach of already digested material; the same mechanism also optimises food comminution. Wild ruminants vary widely in the degree to which their rumen contents 'stratify', with little stratification in 'moose-type' ruminants (which are mostly restricted to a browse niche) and a high degree of stratification into gas, particle and fluid layers in 'cattle-type' ruminants (which are more flexible as intermediate feeders and grazers). Yet all ruminants uniformly achieve efficient selective particle retention, suggesting that functions other than particle retention played an important role in the evolution of stratification-enhancing adaptations. One interesting emerging hypothesis is that the high fluid turnover observed in 'cattle-type' ruminants - which is a prerequisite for stratification - is an adaptation that not only leads to a shift of the sorting mechanism from the reticulum to the whole reticulo-rumen, but also optimises the harvest of microbial protein from the forestomach. Although potential benefits of this adaptation have not been quantified, the evidence for convergent evolution toward stratification suggests that they must be substantial. In modern production systems, the main way in which humans influence the efficiency of energy uptake is by manipulating diet quality. Selective breeding for conversion efficiency has resulted in notable differences between wild and domestic animals. With increased knowledge on the relevance of individual factors, that is fluid throughput through the reticulo-rumen, more specific selection parameters for breeding could be defined to increase productivity of domestic ruminants by continuing certain evolutionary trajectories.  相似文献

Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 was first implicated in human disease in the early 1980s, with ruminants cited as the primary reservoirs. Preliminary studies indicated cattle to be the sole source of E. coli O157:H7 outbreaks in humans; however, further epidemiological studies soon demonstrated that E. coli O157:H7 was widespread in other food sources and that a number of transmission routes existed. More recently, small domestic ruminants (sheep and goats) have emerged as important sources of E. coli O157:H7 human infection, particularly with the widespread popularity of petting farms and the increased use of sheep and goat food products, including unpasteurized cheeses. Although the colonization and persistence characteristics of E. coli O157:H7 in the bovine host have been studied intensively, this is not the case for small ruminants. Despite many similarities to the bovine host, the pathobiology of E. coli O157:H7 in small domestic ruminants does appear to differ significantly from that described in cattle. This review aims to critically review the current knowledge regarding colonization and persistence of E. coli O157:H7 in small domestic ruminants, including comparisons with the bovine host where appropriate.  相似文献

A study was carried out to determine if the protozoal fauna of indigenous African wild ruminants was different from that found in their domestic counterparts and if the animal's diet influenced the number and types of protozoa. Samples of rumen contents were collected in 1997 and 2001 from various indigenous African wild ruminants in Kenya. All three ruminant feeding types were sampled: browsers or concentrate selectors (giraffe and Guenther's dik-dik); intermediate or adaptable mixed feeders (impala, Thomson's gazelle, Grant's gazelle and eland); grass or roughage eaters (hartebeest and wildebeest). Total concentration of ciliate protozoa and percentage generic distribution were determined. In general, protozoal concentrations were higher in concentrate selectors, followed by the intermediate or opportunistic mixed feeders and lowest in the grass and roughage eaters. Both Thomson's and Grant's gazelle were protozoa-free in the 2001 samples. Entodinium percentages were considerably higher in concentrate selectors and intermediate mixed feeders, compared to roughage eaters. Two genera of protozoa previously found in only a few African ruminants, Epiplastron and Opisthotrichum, were observed in several additional animal species and represent new host records. A difference was noted in the protozoal species composition of the indigenous wild ruminants from that previously observed in African domestic ruminants.  相似文献

Tissue specific deficiency of lysozyme in ruminants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The distribution of lysozyme in tissues and fluids of ruminants was examined and it was determined that, except for a few tissues, ruminants were deficient in lysozyme activity compared with other species. The prominent exception was the abomasum of cattle, which had high levels of lysozyme activity. Mixing and extraction studies indicated that the lysozyme deficiency of ruminants was due neither to the presence of inhibitors of lysozyme in ruminant tissue nor to the binding of lysozyme in a manner that interfered with its enzymatic activity or assay. Other investigations have indicated that isozymes of lysozyme are present in ruminants and this study suggests that ruminants have only low levels of the isozyme that is the major isozyme of lysozyme in non-ruminants.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to document, through a mailed questionnaire survey, the methods of parasite control currently used in captive wild ruminants. There was a 69% overall response to the survey. The majority of respondents indicated that they used parasite surveillance and identification techniques similar to those used for domestic ruminants. Of the four major anthelmintic drug classes, the benzimidazoles and ivermectin were used most commonly. Many of the parasite control programs had high treatment frequencies which were similar to dosing frequencies reported to result in anthelmintic resistance in domestic animals. Lack of effectiveness by benzimidazoles was perceived to be a problem by many respondents.  相似文献

Up-to-date experimental results on mechanisms and physiological significance of mineral cations absorption in the reticulo-rumen of ruminants are observed in the review. Up to 90% of sodium, 100% of potassium and calcium and about 30-60% of magnesium pass across epithelium of the reticulo-rumen of domestic ruminants by electroneitral way through cation per hydrogen exchanges. In wild ruminant (reindeer) the item for sodium is up to 100%. Intracellular hydrogen ions are available due to carbonic anhydrase I function. The exchanges have great significance for the animals. The first, their organisms get cations mainly by metabolic products using. The second, hydrogen ions excretion is necessary for reticulo-rumen epithelial cells successful proliferation. The third, hydrogen ions excretion may be considered as a excretory mechanism of metabolic acidosis compensation in the digestive tract of ruminants. These moments may be observed as physiological mechanisms of adaptation of wild ruminants to seasonal dynamic of nutrition.  相似文献

Background  

Q fever, a worldwide zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, is endemic in northern Spain where it has been reported as responsible for large series of human pneumonia cases and domestic ruminants' reproductive disorders. To investigate pathogen exposure among domestic ruminants in semi-extensive grazing systems in northern Spain, a serosurvey was carried out in 1,379 sheep (42 flocks), 626 beef cattle (46 herds) and 115 goats (11 herds). Serum antibodies were analysed by ELISA and positive samples were retested by Complement Fixation test (CFT) to detect recent infections.  相似文献

The luteinizing hormone (LH) is secreted in multiple molecular forms into the blood stream; however, few studies have characterized the pattern of the circulating LH isoforms in domestic animals during different physiological stages. Most of the publications are related to the pattern of isoforms present in the anterior pituitary gland. This review includes recent evidence concerning the distribution of LH isoforms in the pituitary gland and serum in ruminants. The structural heterogeneity of this hormone is emphasized, including the glycosylation biosynthetic pathway, as well as the different proportions of oligosaccharides that confer particular functional characteristics to the heterodimer. Evidence for a regulating role of GnRH, estradiol and progesterone is discussed.  相似文献

When domestic ruminants are faced with food diversity, they can use pre-ingestive information (i.e. food sensory characteristics perceived by the animal before swallowing the food) and post-ingestive information (i.e. digestive and metabolic consequences, experienced by the animal after swallowing the food) to evaluate the food and make decisions to select a suitable diet. The concept of palatability is essential to understand how pre- and post-ingestive information are interrelated. It refers to the hedonic value of the food without any immediate effect of post-ingestive consequences and environmental factors, but with the influence of individual characteristics, such as animal's genetic background, internal state and previous experiences. In the literature, the post-ingestive consequences are commonly considered as the main force that influences feeding behaviour whereas food sensory characteristics are only used as discriminatory agents. This discriminatory role is indeed important for animals to be aware of their feeding environment, and ruminants are able to use their different senses either singly or in combination to discriminate between different foods. However, numerous studies on ruminants’ feeding behaviour demonstrate that the role of food sensory characteristics has been underestimated or simplified; they could play at least two other roles. First, some sensory characteristics also possess a hedonic value which influences ruminants’ intake, preferences and food learning independently of any immediate post-ingestive consequences. Further, diversity of food sensory characteristics has a hedonic value, as animals prefer an absence of monotony in food sensory characteristics at similar post-ingestive consequences. Second, some of these food sensory characteristics become an indicator of post-ingestive consequences after their initial hedonic value has acquired a positive or a negative value via previous individual food learning or evolutionary processes. These food sensory characteristics thus represent cues that could help ruminants to anticipate the post-ingestive consequences of a food and to improve their learning efficiency, especially in complex environments. This review then suggests that food sensory characteristics could be of importance to provide pleasure to animals, to increase palatability of a food and to help them learn in complex feeding situations which could improve animal welfare and productivity.  相似文献

Developing the rumen’s capacity to utilise recalcitrant and low-value feed resources is important for ruminant production systems. Early-life nutrition and management practices have been shown to influence development of the rumen in young animals with long-term consequences on their performance. Therefore, there has been increasing interest to understand ruminal development and function in young ruminants to improve feed efficiency, health, welfare, and performance of both young and adult ruminants. However, due to the small size, rapid morphological changes and low initial microbial populations of the rumen, it is difficult to study ruminal function in young ruminants without major invasive approaches or slaughter studies. In this review, we discuss the usefulness of a range of proxies and markers to monitor ruminal function and nitrogen use efficiency (a major part of feed efficiency) in young ruminants. Breath sulphide and methane emissions showed the greatest potential as simple markers of a developing microbiota in young ruminants. However, there is only limited evidence for robust indicators of feed efficiency at this stage. The use of nitrogen isotopic discrimination based on plasma samples appeared to be the most promising proxy for feed efficiency in young ruminants. More research is needed to explore and refine potential proxies and markers to indicate ruminal function and feed efficiency in young ruminants, particularly for neonatal ruminants.  相似文献

Comparative investigations were made between wild and domestic ruminants from arid and semi-arid regions and those species from non-arid areas in an attempt to evaluate the adaptations of these ruminants in terms of the effects of heat stress and dehydration on food intake and digestibility. The effect of (a) an intermittent heat load (a daily light cycle of 12 h at 22 degrees C and 12 h at 40 degrees C) compared to 22 degrees C throughout the day and (b) dehydration level of 15% weight loss, with and without the heat load, on the intake and digestibility of a poor quality hay was investigated in the Grant's gazelle, Oryx, the domestic Turkana goats, fat-tailed sheep, zebu cattle, Thomson's gazelle and wildebeest. The intermittent heat load with water available ad libitum depressed the food intake of zebu cattle and Turkana goats by more than 40%. It had no significant effect on the food intake of the other species. The Thomson's and Grants gazelle, oryx, wildebeest and fat-tailed sheep appear well adapted to withstanding a periodic heat load. Dehydration at 22 degrees C caused a marked depression on food intake of all the species investigated. Dehydration together with a heat load caused no further reduction in the food intake by the Grants's gazelle, oryx, and goats but it did cause a further reduction in the intake in the other species. The small non-domestic ruminants (i.e. Grant's and Thomson's gazelle) appear much more digestive efficient than any of their domestic counterpart.  相似文献

The distribution of tick species able to infest ruminants in Italy is briefly reviewed on the basis of published records and new data obtained in several surveys carried out mainly in northern Italy. The most frequent and abundant tick species found on ruminants throughout Italy are Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor marginatus, the first gradually replacing its association with sheep by the association with wild ruminants. Rhipicephalus bursa was mainly found on cattle while R. turanicus, which is considered one of the most sheep-associated species, was found only on wild boar. Haemaphysalis punctata, H. sulcata and H. parva are the other tick species quite frequently found on small ruminants when they are reared on pastures mainly in central-southern Italy. However, the land exploitation of these last decades has dramatically reduced the diversity of Italian environment and significantly modified the distribution and the abundance of ticks causing a heavy spread of the tick species characterized by a strong adaptability such as I. ricinus and R. sanguineus. If this trend continues, it is possible to hypothesise that few "resistant" tick species will gradually replace most of the others. This hypothesis seems to be confirmed by the high percentage observed for I. ricinus (57.4%) and R. sanguineus (35.73%) out of 8,712 specimens collected from several different hosts and from the environment.  相似文献

The helminth fauna of eight species of wild ruminants and five species of domestic ruminants sharing common grassland in Mongolia was reviewed. A total of 108 species of helminths, belonging to 40 genera, 23 families, 11 superfamilies, 6 orders and 3 classes were reported in wild and domestic ruminants in Mongolia. Several new host–helminth associations have been recorded. Twenty seven helminth species have been found in certain host species for the first time in Mongolia. These included 2 species of trematodes, 2 species of cestodes and 23 species of nematodes. Helminths that are specific for some of the examined ruminant species were determined. However, wild animals may serve as a reservoir of helminth infections for domestic animals when sharing grassland in Mongolia. The helminth fauna of the ruminants with respect to occurrence, distribution, prevalence and intensity of infection was considered for six geographic regions of Mongolia.  相似文献

Wild ruminants sharing pastures with domestic livestock are at risk of infection by liver trematodes. Detection of antibodies provides a very useful tool to gain more knowledge about the distribution of these parasites. Non-lethal methods are strongly encouraged for the analysis of the risk of infection among wild ruminants. A seroepidemiological survey was conducted to analyze exposure to hepatic trematodes ( Fasciola hepatica and Dicrocoelium dendriticum ) in wild ruminants from southern Spain. Blood samples were collected from 69 bovids (Mouflon + Spanish ibex) and 143 cervids (red deer + fallow deer) from Sierra de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park. The samples were analyzed using the excretory/secretory antigens of each trematode to determine the IgG response. All the animals were examined at necropsy for the presence of flukes, and the species, age, and gender of the animals were recorded. Fasciola hepatica were only observed in cervids (3%; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2-8), while D. dendriticum specimens were recorded in 1% (0-8) of bovids and 4% (CI = 2-9) of the cervids. The IgG-seroprevalence against F. hepatica was significantly higher in the cervids. Statistical differences according to gender were observed. The bovids exhibited the greatest percentages of positive cases to D. dendriticum antigens, and the DdES-seroprevalence was related to age of the animals. When considering all the factors, the FhES-seroprevalence was initially distributed according to the type of ruminant (cervids), gender (male), and age (>2 yr).  相似文献

Recent advances in reproductive biotechnologies in small ruminants include improvement of methods for in vitro production of embryos and attempts at spermatogonial stem cell transplantation. In vitro production of embryos by IVM/IVF, intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), or nuclear transfer (NT) has been made possible by improvements in oocyte collection and maturation techniques, and early embryo culture systems. However, in vitro embryo production still is not very efficient due to several limiting factors affecting the outcome of each step of the process. This paper discusses factors affecting in vitro embryo production in small ruminants and camelids, as well as preliminary results with the technique of spermatogonial stem cell transplantation.  相似文献

Ghrelin, a novel endogenous growth hormone (GH) secretagogue, has been shown to exert very potent and specific GH-releasing activity in rats and humans. However, little is known about its GH-releasing activity and endocrine effects in domestic animals. To clarify the effect of ghrelin on GH secretion in vivo in ruminants, plasma GH responses to intra-arterial and intra-hypothalamic injections of rat ghrelin (rGhrelin) were examined in goats and cattle. The intra-arterial injection of 1 microg/kg BW of rGhrelin in ovariectomized goats failed to stimulate GH release, however, a dosage of 3 microg/kg BW significantly increased plasma GH concentrations (P<0.05). GH levels peaked at 15 min after the injection, then decreased to basal concentrations within 1 h after the injection. However, the secretory response to 3 microg/kg BW of rGhrelin was weaker than that of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) (0.25 microg/kg BW) (P<0.05). An infusion of 10 nmol of ghrelin into the medial basal hypothalamus (arcuate nucleus) significantly stimulated the release of GH in male calves (P<0.05). GH levels began to rise just after the infusions and peaked at 10 min, then decreased to the basal concentrations within 1 h after the injection. The present results show that ghrelin stimulates GH release in ruminants.  相似文献
