This study experimentally examines the relationship between colony state and the behaviour of individual pollen and nectar foragers in the honey bee, Apis mellifera L. In the first experiment we test the prediction that individual pollen foragers from colonies with higher brood quantities should exhibit a greater work effort for pollen resources than individual pollen foragers from colonies with low brood quantities. Eight colonies were assigned into two treatment groups; HIGH brood colonies were manipulated to contain 9600±480 cm2 brood area; LOW brood colonies were manipulated to contain 1600±80 cm2 brood area. We measured colony brood levels over the course of the experiment and collected individual pollen loads from returning pollen foragers. We found that, while colonies remained significantly different in brood levels, individual pollen foragers from HIGH brood colonies collected larger loads than individuals from LOW brood colonies. In the second experiment we investigated the influence of colony size on the behaviour of individual nectar foragers. We assigned eight colonies to two treatment groups; LARGE colonies were manipulated to contain 35000±1700 adult workers with 3500±175 cm2 brood area, and SMALL colonies were manipulated to contain 10000±500 adult workers with 1000±50 cm2 brood area. We observed foraging trips of individually marked workers and found that individuals from LARGE colonies made longer foraging trips than those from SMALL colonies (LARGE: 1666.7±126.4 seconds, SMALL: 1210.8±157.6 seconds), and collected larter nectar loads (LARGE: 19.2±1.0 l, SMALL: 14.6±0.8 l). These results indicate that individual nectar foragers from LARGE colonies tend to work harder than individuals from SMALL colonies. Both experiments indicate that the values of nectar and pollen resources to a colony change depend on colony state, and that individual foragers modify their behaviour accordingly.  相似文献

Many factors contribute to the success of a socially parasitic strategy, especially the ability of the parasite to invade a host colony. However, little research has focused on the choices that may be made by an invading parasite, specifically whether parasites actively discriminate between different host colonies and if they have a preference for colonies of a particular size. When an allodapine social parasite, Inquilina schwarzi, was presented with colonies of their host species, Exoneura robusta, the parasites were found to invade the larger host colonies. However, it could not be ascertained from this study whether the parasites were making an active decision concerning which colony to invade, or whether they were simply more attracted to the larger colonies due to potentially stronger odour cues. Regardless of the cause, the larger host colonies are more at risk of being invaded by a social parasite, which would give parasites greater resources for exploitation and could also provide selection against the large host colony sizes.  相似文献

Summary Possibilities for new colony foundation inAnelosimus eximius (Theridiidae) were tested with isolated females (both with and without egg sacs) and with groups of individuals (groups from 150 to 250 spiders). Experimental groups were deposited in three different habitats: within the forest, on the forest edge (where natural colonies develop most frequently) and outside the forest (low savannah or areas cleared of vegetation, but in which plant life had started to grow back between the path and the forest edge).Isolated adult females had very low founding success: less than 13 % settled and spun a web; the presence of an egg sac provided by investigators was not an influencing factor. Webs of isolated females had the same architectures as those of colonies with several hundreds of individuals. This web was a horizontal sheet linked to a thick vertical network of threads. All groups of 150 to 250 spiders established colonies in appropriate habitats. The colonies outside the forest, and more than 90 % of the colonies along the forest edges successfully developed during the one month observation period. Conversely, 35 % of the colonies in the forest disappeared either a few days after being placed there, or one or two weeks after. In the latter case, spiders apparently left their webs, and all silk structures were left intact. No dead spiders were found in the webs.Average web surface areas increased in all colony types with age, except for those placed in the forest. In these colonies, the number of individuals decreased, and there were fewer egg sacs than in the colonies placed outside the forest. Results are discussed with regard to natural colony distribution along open paths and to the dispersive characteristics of this spider species.  相似文献

A total of 280 laboratory colonies of Reticulitermes urbis were raised for 3 years, in order to observe caste differentiation and overall colony growth, and to investigate whether the initial composition (0, 2 or 4 nymphs; 0, 5, 10, 20 or 50 workers) affected colony survival, population growth and other colony dynamics. We also wanted to determine the minimum number of individuals needed to establish a vital colony. As a result, every colony beginning with less than 20 workers died within 60 weeks, while colonies beginning with at least 20 workers survived until the end of the tests, with varied survival rates dependent upon the initial size and the time of formation (summer or autumn). The number of nymphs did not affect colony survival and colony growth. Reproductives developed from nymphs within 2 weeks and later from workers. Many of the reproductives derived from nymphs were killed by workers. The majority of the colonies contained two reproductives 3 years after initiating the tests. In addition, a few individual workers were still alive at the end of the 3-year tests. At the end of the tests, the proportion of soldiers ranged anywhere from 5.23 to 7.69% of the total population. The number of viable “juveniles” from each colony was relatively low throughout the tests and the overall population growth was not sufficient enough to replace dead workers or increase the colony size considerably. These results indicate that the potential to establish viable and sustainable colonies for groups of R. urbis composed of 5–50 workers is very low.  相似文献

A quantitative method was developed to describe Lophodermium (Rhytismataceae, Ascomycetes) populations on Pinus thunbergii needle litter, and seasonal patterns of population variation were examined based on this method. We focused on the formation of black zone lines across needles and the production of Lophodermium ascocarps on needle portions delimitated by zone lines. The study was carried out at a soil erosion control site on a mountain slope and at a coastal sand dune site. Most Lophodermium spp. on needle litter were identified as L. pinastri according to morphological characteristics of ascocarps and ascospores and DNA analysis. Zone lines were produced on needles when isolates of L. pinastri were in contact with other isolates of L. pinastri or with isolates of other species in dual culture tests. This observation provided a rationale to consider that individual colonies with ascocarps and delimitated by zone lines were occupied by a single Lophodermium isolate. Frequency of occurrence of Lophodermium colonies, total colony length, and mean colony number per needle were higher at the coastal sand dune site than at the soil erosion control site. Total colony length and mean colony number also varied with season. Mean colony length and mean ascocarp number per colony were not different between sites or seasons.  相似文献

Ergot alkaloids
Giant colonies prepared from sclerotia ofClaviceps purpurea form in many cases sharply bounded purple-pigmented sectors not originating from the colony centres, the so-called “late sectors”. Similar sectors are found in giant colonies obtained after an isolation of individual conidia from the mycelium of the white portion of the sectored giant colony. These results, supported by literature data, indicate that ergot sclerotia are commonly homokaryotic and that phenotypically different sectors result from a mutation during growth of the giant colony. In a parasitic culture on rye some mutation-derived purple isolates are reversed to form sclerotia with alkaloid level identical to that of the parent strain while some retain their mutated character, exhibiting hence a significantly reduced alkaloid production.  相似文献

Social organisms vary greatly in the number of breeders per group; yet, the causes and consequences of this variation remain poorly known. Here, we show that variation in social structure is tightly linked with changes in several fundamental life-history traits within one population of ants. Multiple-queen colonies of Formica selysi were much more populous than single-queen ones. They also occurred in areas of higher nest density, had longer colony lifespan, produced smaller queens that presumably disperse less, and invested less in reproductive individuals relative to workers. These multiple changes in life histories are consistent with a shift in the mode of colony foundation and the degree of philopatry of queens. They may also provide various fitness benefits to members of multiple-queen colonies and are likely to play a central role in the evolution and maintenance of polymorphic social structures.  相似文献

In agriculture, honey bees play a critical role as commercial pollinators of crop monocultures which depend on insect pollination. Hence, the demise of honey bee colonies in Europe, USA, and Asia caused much concern and initiated many studies and research programmes aiming at elucidating the factors negatively affecting honey bee health and survival. Most of these studies look at individual factors related to colony losses. In contrast, we here present our data on the interaction of pathogens and parasites in honey bee colonies. We performed a longitudinal cohort study over 6 years by closely monitoring 220 honey bee colonies kept in 22 apiaries (ten randomly selected colonies per apiary). Observed winter colony losses varied between 4.8% and 22.4%; lost colonies were replaced to ensure a constant number of monitored colonies over the study period. Data on mite infestation levels, infection with viruses, Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae, and recorded outbreaks of chalkbrood were continuously collected. We now provide statistical evidence (i) that Varroa destructor infestation in summer is related to DWV infections in autumn, (ii) that V. destructor infestation in autumn is related to N. apis infection in the following spring, and most importantly (iii) that chalkbrood outbreaks in summer are related to N. ceranae infection in the preceding spring and to V. destructor infestation in the same season. These highly significant links between emerging parasites/pathogens and established pathogens need further experimental proof but they already illustrate the complexity of the host–pathogen-interactions in honey bee colonies.  相似文献

1. The performance of ant colonies depends on different factors such as nest site, colony structure or the presence of pathogens and social parasites. Myrmica ants host various types of social parasites, including the larvae of Maculinea butterflies and Microdonmyrmicae (Schönrogge) hoverfly. How these social parasites affect host colony performance is still unexplored. 2. It was examined how the presence of Maculinea teleius Bergsträsser, Maculinea alcon (Denis & Schiffermüller), and M. myrmicae larvae, representing different feeding and growth strategies inside host colonies, is associated with worker survival, the number of foragers, and colony productivity parameters such as growth and reproduction. 3. It was found that the presence of social parasites is negatively associated with total colony production and the production of ant larvae and gynes. Male production was lower only in nests infested by M. teleius, whereas the number of worker pupae was significantly higher in all types of infested colonies than in uninfested colonies. Laboratory observations indicated that nests infested by Maculinea larvae are characterised by a higher number of foragers compared to uninfested nests but we did not find differences in worker survival among nest types. 4. The observed pattern of social parasite influence on colony productivity can be explained by the feeding strategies of parasitic larvae. The most negative effect was found for M. teleius, which feeds on the largest host brood and eliminates a high number of sexual forms. The strong, adverse influence of all studied parasite species on gyne production may result in low queen production in Myrmica populations exposed to these social parasites.  相似文献

1. Genetic colony structure of the small central European ant Leptothorax nylanderi is affected strongly by ecological constraints such as nest site availability and intraspecific social parasitism. 2. Although L. nylanderi is generally monogynous and monandrous, more than a quarter of all nests collected in a dense population near Würzburg, Germany, contained several matrilines. As shown by microsatellite analysis, the average nest‐mate relatedness in these nests was 0.20. Genetically heterogeneous nests arise from nest take‐over by alien colonies or founding queens, a result of severe competition for nest sites. 3. In summer, more than one‐third of all colonies inhabited several nest sites at a time. Polydomy appears to be rather limited, with two or three nests belonging to a single polydomous colony. 4. Queens appear to dominate male production; only a small fraction (8%) of males was definitively not progeny of the queen present but might have been worker progeny or offspring of another queen. 5. Strong evidence for heterozygote deficiency was found and a total of nine diploid males was discovered in two colonies. These findings suggest deviation from random mating through small, localised nuptial flights.

Microcystis is a well-studied type of bloom-forming genus cyanobacteria that occurs as colonies in lakes. However, whenever Microcystis colonies are transferred to the laboratory, they always disaggregate into a unicellular form. The mechanism underlying this disaggregation of Microcystis colonies remains uncharacterized. Here, we report on the changes in morphology and the changes in the composition of the associated bacterial community of Microcystis wesenbergii colonies. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis (DGGE) showed that the diversity of the associated bacterial community decreased during the disaggregation of Microcystis colonies. Two γ-Proteobacteria and one Bacteroidetes species from the mucilage of Microcystis colonies were not detected following colony disaggregation, suggesting that these species may influence Microcystis colony morphology. Solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (SPME GC/MS) analysis revealed that seven of the forty-one extracellular compounds detected were exclusively present in the media of the Microcystis colony extracts; these compounds may be secreted by bacteria and may be a beneficial role in Microcystis colony maintenance. The results of this study indicate that changes in the composition of the bacterial community associated with Microcystis colonies are likely responsible for the disaggregation of these colonies in the laboratory.  相似文献

This is the first report on the annual egg production patterns in mature termite colonies in the field. Data on the seasonal patterns of egg production in field colonies are very important for understanding the annual colony growth schedule, resource allocation, and population dynamics of the termites. However, collecting the eggs from a sufficient number of colonies is extremely difficult in Reticulitermes termites because their multiple-site nesting makes it difficult to find the reproductive center of the colonies. Here, we first show the seasonal pattern of egg production in the subterranean termite Reticulitermes speratus by collecting the reproductive center of ten colonies each month from April through October. We had to destructively examine dozens of nests to find eggs from enough field colonies each month. Mature field colonies began to produce eggs in late May, soon after the swarming season, and the egg production rate (EPR) reached its maximum in early July. The eggs hatched until late October. The EPR was significantly correlated with the average monthly temperature. Additional investigation of the egg distributions in the nests showed that most eggs were kept around the royal cell, which contained the reproductives. The largest colony had 109 supplemental queens and 94,023 eggs, suggesting that each queen produced an average of 24.7 eggs per day, based on the known mean hatching period of an inseminated egg of 34.95±0.12 (SE) days.  相似文献

Plants adopt various strategies in response to increasing density. We tested that response in two populations of Lemna minor L. – a free floating aquatic plant that frequently experiences intraspecific competition for space. Surface area of fronds and colonies, colony size (the number of fronds per colony), the rate of reproduction (based on the number of produced fronds) and growth rate (enlargement of surface area of all colonies) were the analysed factors presumably affected by density. The study was performed in natural stands and in experimental conditions with the use of two contrasting plant densities. Plants growing in natural conditions produced fronds of smaller and less variable surface area as a response to overcrowding but the number of fronds per colony was unrelated to plant density. Stable experimental conditions facilitated formation of fronds and colonies larger than in the field but frond detachment decreasing colony size was more intensive at high than at low density. This strategy allowed plants to more efficiently occupy limited available space. No self-thinning was observed during experimental cultures. Due to increasing frond area in cultures, growth rate was always higher than the rate of plant reproduction. Both were strongly negatively affected by high density. Performed calculations indicate that density-dependent growth inhibition starts when L. minor colonies cover the available water surface with a mono-layer mat. Some types of responses were found to significantly differ between analysed populations, which was also shown by genetic differences tested with he ISSR-PCR technique. Possible causal relationship between plant strategies and their genomic structure needs, however, further studies.  相似文献

The growth and survival of colonies and individuals within sedentary polyp colonies of moon jellyfish (Aurelia sp.) was investigated at three temperatures and three salinities in laboratory experiments. Growth rates of colonies (number of polyps and number of buds in the colony) and individuals (number of buds per active scyphistomae) significantly increased with temperature, but were not affected by salinity. Survival was high in all treatment combinations indicating a wide tolerance to environmental conditions. However, scyphistomae at the lowest temperature had a greater percentage of larger individuals and slower population growth rate than those at warmer temperatures. These results suggest that the reproductive strategy to maximise production of Aurelia sp. is to increase the size of scyphistomae colonies by asexual budding when conditions are good (warmer temperatures and abundant food generally during spring and summer). Budding activity slows, but the size of scyphistomae increases, during the colder winter period leading up to strobilation, resulting in the production of a greater number of ephyrae. The trigger for strobilation is possibly stressful conditions. However, if trigger conditions do not occur, the colony of scyphistomae can continue to grow and survive through a broad range of conditions spanning many seasons, thus ensuring survival of the population.  相似文献

The density of wild honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera) in the African dry highland savannahs was estimated in three Nature Reserves in Gauteng, South Africa (Ezemvelo, Leeuwfontein, Suikerbosrand) based on the genotypes of drones which were caught at drone congregation areas. Densities were estimated to range between 12.4 and 17.6 colonies per square kilometer. In addition colony densities were estimated in two German National parks (Müritz and Hochharz) and a commercial mating apiary. The density of colonies was significantly lower at the German sampling sites with estimates of 2.4–3.2 colonies per square kilometer, which closely matches the nation-wide density of colonies kept by beekeepers. This shows that the densities of colonies observed in wild populations under the harsh conditions of the African dry savannahs exceeds that of Germany by far, in spite of intensive beekeeping. The intensity of apiculture in Europe is therefore unlikely to compensate for the loss of habitats suitable for wild honeybees due to agriculture, forestry and other cultivation of land.  相似文献

For elusive mammals like bats, colonization of new areas and colony formation are poorly understood, as is their relationship with the genetic structure of populations. Understanding dispersal and group formation behaviors is critical not only for a better comprehension of mammalian social dynamics, but also for guiding conservation efforts of rare and endangered species. Using nuclear and mitochondrial markers, we studied patterns of genetic diversity and differentiation among and within breeding colonies of giant noctule bats (Nyctalus lasiopterus), their relation to a new colony still in formation, and the impact of this ongoing process on the regionwide genetic makeup. Nuclear differentiation among colonies was relatively low and mostly nonsignificant. Mitochondrial variation followed this pattern, contrasting with findings for other temperate bat species. Our results suggest that this may indicate a recent population expansion. On average, female giant noctules were not more closely related to other colony members than to foreign individuals. This was also true for members of the newly forming colony and those of another, older group sampled shortly after its formation, suggesting that contrary to findings for other temperate bats, giant noctule colonies are not founded by relatives. However, mother–daughter pairs were found in the same populations more often than expected under random dispersal. Given this indication of philopatry, the lack of mitochondrial differentiation among most colonies in the region is probably due to the combination of a recent population expansion and group formation events.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The ecological hypothesis predicts that multiple foundress colonies of social wasps may have a better survival rate and produce more brood per capita than single foundress colonies. With the aim of verifying if these characteristics exist in the primitively eusocial wasp species Belonogaster juncea juncea (L.), we monitored 49 foundations, including 13 single and 36 multiple foundress colonies, in Cameroon.
2. Multiple foundress colonies were significantly more successful than single foundress colonies in producing at least one adult.
3. The total productivity of the colonies increased significantly with the number of associated foundresses, but the productivity per capita did not. No single foundress colony reached the sexual phase, while eight (21.6%) multiple foundress colonies did. Males were produced in only five colonies, so that the sex ratio was biased in favour of females.
4. These results suggest that because of the strong ecological constraints on solitary nesting, survival and high colony productivity are two advantages of multiple foundress colonies in B. j. juncea .
5. The decreasing per capita productivity concomitant with an increasing number of females noted in this study illustrates once again Michener's paradox. The coefficient of variance of the per capita productivity significantly decreased with group size, as Wenzel and Pickering suggested in the model they created to explain the paradox.
6. Ecological factors may act in conjunction with other factors, such as genetic relatedness between associated foundresses, to promote joining behaviour in B. j. juncea .  相似文献

Questions: What are the water economy strategies of the dominant subarctic bryophytes in terms of colony and shoot traits? Can colony water retention capacity be predicted from morphological traits of both colonies and separate shoots? Are suites of water retention traits consistently related to bryophyte habitat and phylogenetic position? Location: Abisko Research Station, North Sweden. Methods: We screened 22 abundant subarctic bryophyte species from diverse habitats for water economy traits of shoots and colonies, including desiccation rates, water content at field capacity, volume and density (mg cm?3) of water‐saturated and oven‐dried patches, evaporation rate (g·m?2·s?1) and cell wall thickness. The relationships between these traits and shoot and colony desiccation rates were analysed with Spearman rank correlations. Subsequent multivariate (cluster followed by PCA) analyses were based on turf density, turf and shoot desiccation rate, cell wall thickness and amount of external and internal water. Results: Individual shoot properties, i.e. leaf cell wall properties, water retention capacity and desiccation rate, did not correspond with colony water retention capacity. Colony desiccation rate depended on density of water‐saturated colonies, and was marginally significantly negatively correlated with species individual shoot desiccation rate but not related to any other shoot or colony trait. Multivariate analyses based on traits assumed to determine colony desiccation rate revealed six distinct species groups reflecting habitat choice and phylogenetic relationships. Conclusions: General relationships between shoot and colony traits as determinants of water economy will help to predict and upscale changes in hydrological function of bryophyte‐dominated peatlands undergoing climate‐induced shifts in species abundance, and feedbacks of such species shifts on permafrost insulation and carbon sequestration functions.  相似文献

Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is one of the dominant oxidation states of chromium that exist in the environment and is highly toxic to all forms of life. In the present study, we employ a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and investigate the effect of Cr(VI) on colony morphology of a Bacillus sp. isolated from soil exposed to tannery effluent. The colonies grown at chromium concentrations, control and 100 ppm are found to be opaque and beyond 200 ppm the colonies were translucent thus exhibiting phase variation. CLSM studies on colonies grown on control plates showed significant increase in height and in biovolume as a function of time whereas, the translucent colonies showed very little change in height and biovolume corresponding to the colony growth. Exopolymeric substance (EPS) content of translucent colonies was lesser than that of opaque colonies, indicating that EPS also plays a role in the observed phenomenon of phase variation. Studies on the effect of Cr(VI) on spore formation showed that Cr(VI) concentrations up to 100 ppm favored spore formation, while concentrations beyond 100 ppm showed a steady decline in spore formation.  相似文献
