A DWARF FORM OF THE SPINNER DOLPHIN (STENELLA LONGIROSTRIS) FROM THAILAND   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A very small form of the spinner dolphin has been found to inhabit the Gulf of Thailand. Ten specimens taken incidentally in a local shrimp fishery differ from specimens of this species collected elsewhere in body size and shape, skull size and shape, number of teeth and numbers of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. Four cranially adult males were 129–137 cm long, well below the ranges for the Indian Ocean, western Pacific, central Pacific, eastern Pacific and Atlantic. The skull is also very small. Tooth counts and vertebral counts average lower than in other series. The color pattern is not significantly different from that of spinner dolphins in the central and western Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans but differs from that of the small eastern spinner of the eastern Pacific. The Gulf of Thailand specimens are morphologically separable from all other specimens, but it is to be expected that when larger samples are available there will be some overlap. The dwarf form may overlap in body and skull size with small spinner dolphins taken incidentally in a gillnet fishery for sharks off northern Australia. The geographic range of the dwarf spinner may be restricted. The size and status of the population and the impact of the shrimp fishery are unknown and should be investigated. The dwarf spinner may have an ecology different from that of other spinners, feeding mainly on reef-associated and benthic organisms rather than mesopelagic animals.  相似文献

Pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) returning to Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska, have increased to historically high levels of abundance in recent years, but average body size at return has declined. We examined how body size at return of PWS pink salmon was related to 10 biophysical factors, including the scale of hatchery production. We also examined the effect of body size at return on productivity of wild pink salmon in PWS. For the 1975–1999 brood years, we found that an index of total abundance of pink salmon in the Gulf of Alaska and sea surface temperature during the year of return best explained the variation in pink salmon body size over time. Body size at return was significantly correlated with productivity of wild pink salmon. We used stepwise-regression to fit a generalized linear version of the Ricker spawner-recruit model to determine if body size would explain significant variation in wild-stock productivity in context with other environmental variation, including hatchery production. The results indicate that variability in wild-stock productivity is primarily driven by density-independent factors in the marine environment, but that body size of wild spawners also significantly affects productivity of wild PWS pink salmon. We conclude that the success of large-scale enhancement increasing the total run in PWS may have contributed to the decline in body size because of density-dependent growth in the Gulf of Alaska. We used a simulation model to estimate the impact of hatchery-induced changes in adult body size on wild-stock production in PWS. We estimated an annual wild-stock yield loss of 1.03 million pink salmon, less than 5% of the annual hatchery return of 24.2 million adult pink salmon for brood years 1990–1999.  相似文献

The temporal and spatial trends of cephalothorax length andreproductive state of adult females of the cosmopolitan copepodspecies Nannocalanus minor are described across the Gulf Streamnear Cape Hatteras. NC. Consistent regional differences anda cross-stream gradient in size were found, with the largestanimals in the Slope Water, animals of intermediate size inthe Gulf Stream and the smallest animals in the Sargasso Sea.Distinct seasonal patterns in size were observed within eachcross-stream region (Slope Water, Gulf Stream and Sargasso Sea)and these patterns followed seasonal changes in environmentalconditions (temperature and sea surface pigment concentration).Body sizes of the Slope Water animals were inversely and linearlyrelated to temperature with no clear relationship to sea surfacepigment concentration, while body sizes of the Sargasso Seaanimals were correlated with pigment concentration (asymptotic,non-linear relationship) with no relationship to temperature.The lack of consistent regional and seasonal trends in reproductivestate suggested that continuous reproduction was a life historytrait for adults of this species. The potential effect of short-term,episodic events on the size distribution and reproductive stateof this species was investigated across and along a Gulf Streammeander during the BIOSYNOP project in 1988. Upwelling of nutrientsmay occur on the trailing flank of a meander, with enhancedprimary and, possibly, secondary production occurring downstreamin the leading flank of the meander. No specific meander effectwas observed for body size. More individuals were reproducingdownstream of the upwelling region, suggesting a response tothe enhanced primary production characteristic of the upwellingregion.  相似文献

Crab-eating, or long-tailed, macaques [ Macaca fascicularis (Raffles, 1821)] have been studied extensively throughout their distribution in South and South-east Asia. Despite this extensive body of research, the island population of long-tailed macaques from Singapore remains virtually undescribed. In the present study, we compare the morphometric variability and patterns of growth observed in a population sample from Singapore with a composite sample from Thailand, north of the Isthmus of Kra. The results of our analyses indicate that there are statistically significant differences between the two populations in adult size and shape. For both males and females, the Singapore population is smaller than the Thai population. Relative to body length, the Singapore macaques exhibit significantly longer tails, and, relative to cranial length, they exhibit significantly more narrow faces than the Thai macaques. Although levels of sexual dimorphism for most morphometric traits are very similar, indicating similar levels of male–male competition for females, the Singapore males exhibit a significantly larger testicular volume relative to body weight, suggestive of an alternative male reproductive strategy. In addition to adult somatometric size and shape, comparisons of growth patterns relative to age and body size reveal significant differences between the two population samples. Combined, these results suggest either that statistically significant differences in adult morphology and patterns of growth can occur in presumably reproductively cohesive subspecies, or the Singapore macaques may be taxonomically distinct.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 675–694.  相似文献

Body size is a significant factor for organisms because it has a profound effect on almost all of their physiological, life-history, ecological, and evolutionary traits. Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is one of the sources creating intraspecific variation in body size. In general, female adults are larger than male adults in insects. Whereas much research has examined the significance of male competition and fecundity as causes of SSD in insects, relatively less is known about the effects of parasitoids on host insect size. To investigate the effects of the parasitoid fly Blaesoxipha japonensis Hori on the body size of the adult grasshopper Parapodisma tanbaensis Tominaga et Kanô, we examined the relationship between adult host size and host mortality rate caused by B. japonensis when adult grasshoppers captured in the field were reared in the laboratory. The results showed that females were larger than males and that the host mortality rate caused by B. japonensis was inversely related to host size in females, whereas there was no significant relationship between male size and host mortality rate. These results suggest that the effect of this parasitoid on host body size is one factor favoring the female-biased SSD in this adult grasshopper.  相似文献

The environmental conditions to which juvenile barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) were exposed during growth were found to affect their body size at fledging as well as their final adult body size. Small juveniles showed compensatory growth from the time of fledging up to one year of age, but this did not fully compensate the differences in body size that were established before fledging. The variation in protein content in plants eaten during growth could probably explain the observed body size differences, sometimes of more than 10%, between different categories of adult geese. Our results imply that one cannot infer selection on morphological characters from differences between samples of adult birds from different localities or from different cohorts within a population, without first showing that environmental conditions during growth do not affect the development of the characters under study.  相似文献

A total of 433 skulls of harbor porpoises, Phocoena phocoena , were examined to evaluate geographical variation within the western North Atlantic, using analysis of covariance and discriminant analysis based on 45 measurements of skull components. The relationship between condylobasal length and body length was sigmoid in both sexes. Condylobasal length is generally less in adult males than in adult females.
Despite some overlap, morphological differences between different regions and even adjacent local stocks could be recognized by ANCOVA and discriminant analysis. The percentage of correct classification by discriminant functions was 65.2% for the four regional samples: (1) North Canadian Atlantic (which includes Gulf of St. Lawrence and Newfoundland), (2) Bay of Fundy, (3) Gulf of Maine-New York, and (4) Maryland-South Carolina. It was 65.9% for the four local geographical areas (10s of km) within the Bay of Fundy; Quoddy-region porpoises revealed a closer relationship with the southwestern Nova Scotia population than with other adjacent stocks. The results at this level imply that gene flow is restricted to some degree even among closely adjacent geographical units. Management of this species should aim, therefore, for conservation of a variety of local stocks.  相似文献

The Gulf of California harbors about 15% of the total California sea lion ( Zalophus californianus californianus ) population. We studied pup morphometrics from eight Gulf of California rookeries during the 1996 and 1997 reproductive seasons to describe sex differences in body size and body condition indices. Newborn pup body size was not different from previous reports. Male pups were heavier and larger than female pups in terms of all linear dimensions. Morphometric relationships, however, showed that males were 3%-4% denser, and that after removing the effects of length, they were about 2% heavier than females. Sculp depth adjusted for length was 12% larger in female than in male pups. Our data provide further evidence that male otariid pups may allocate a larger fraction of milk energy to muscular and skeletal growth compared to female pups.  相似文献

The variation in reproductive variables is documented both within and across species of chelonians. At both the generic and family levels, egg weight and clutch size show positive, significant correlations with adult carapace length. There is a negative correlation across both genera and families between clutch size and egg weight after removing the effects of body size, suggesting an evolutionary trade-off between these two life-history characteristics. However, the trade-off is not complete, since clutch size is positively correlated with clutch weight after removing the effects of body size. Terrestrial species lay fewer and larger eggs for their size than freshwater or marine species, but this association is statistically confounded by the fact that chelonian families form ecological groups. There is no significant association between habitat and clutch weight after removing the effects of body size, nor between latitude and either egg weight or clutch size, but temperate species have a heavier clutch weight after removing the effects of body size. Larger species lay eggs that are more spherical, but after controlling for body size, egg shape is not associated with clutch size. The patterns of covariation between adult weight, egg weight and clutch size contrast with those reported for birds and mammals, and some reasons for these differences are discussed.  相似文献

The duration of offspring care is critical to female fitness and population resilience by allowing flexibility in life‐history strategies in a variable environment. Yet, for many mammals capable of extended periods of maternal care, estimates of the duration of offspring dependency are not available and the relative importance of flexibility of this trait on fitness and population viability has rarely been examined. We used data from 4,447 Steller sea lions Eumetopias jubatus from the Gulf of Alaska and multistate hidden Markov mark–recapture models to estimate age‐specific weaning probabilities. Maternal care beyond age 1 was common: Weaning was later for animals from Southeast Alaska (SEAK) and Prince William Sound (PWS, weaning probabilities: 0.536–0.648/0.784–0.873 by age 1/2) compared with animals born to the west (0.714–0.855/0.798–0.938). SEAK/PWS animals were also smaller than those born farther west, suggesting a possible link. Females weaned slightly earlier (+0.080 at age 1 and 2) compared with males in SEAK only. Poor survival for weaned versus unweaned yearlings occurred in southern SEAK (female survival probabilities: 0.609 vs. 0.792) and the central Gulf (0.667 vs. 0.901), suggesting poor conditions for juveniles in these areas. First‐year survival increased with neonatal body mass (NBM) linearly in the Gulf and nonlinearly in SEAK. The probability of weaning at age 1 increased linearly with NBM for SEAK animals only. Rookeries where juveniles weaned at earlier ages had lower adult female survival, but age at weaning was unrelated to population trends. Our results suggest the time to weaning may be optimized for different habitats based on long‐term average conditions (e.g., prey dynamics), that may also shape body size, with limited short‐term plasticity. An apparent trade‐off of adult survival in favor of juvenile survival and large offspring size in the endangered Gulf of Alaska population requires further study.  相似文献

Small size results from homozygosity for the polymorphic M4 inversion in the grasshopper Sinipta dalmani. There is directional sexual selection in males favouring the standard sequence and larger individuals. Here I report differential adult male survival in relation to body size and shape in a chromosomally polymorphic population of S. dalmani. Adult male selection was examined by scoring the same five morphometric traits in two consecutive age classes (young and aged males). Multivariate analysis showed significant differences in size between the two samples so that young males are larger for total, third (3 degrees) femur and thorax lengths while aged males show a phenotypic superiority for the lengths of third (3 degrees) tibia and tegmina. Size-adjusted scores for each trait revealed that there are significant differences between young and aged males in shape. In S. dalmani phenotypic selection associated with male mating success may be explained by means of directional selection on body size, while phenotypic selection connected with differential adult male survival may be related to both size and shape.  相似文献

Using eight microsatellite loci and a variety of analytical methods, we estimated genetic effective size (N(e)) of an abundant and long-lived marine fish species, the red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf). The ratio N(e)/N, where short-term variance N(e) was estimated via the temporal method from shifts in allele-frequency data over four cohorts and where N reflected a current estimate of adult census size in the northern Gulf, was approximately 0.001. In an idealized population, this ratio should approximate unity. The extraordinarily low value of N(e)/N appears to arise from high variance in individual reproductive success and perhaps more importantly from variance in productivity of critical spawning and nursery habitats located in spatially discrete bays and estuaries throughout the northern Gulf. An estimate of N(e) based on a coalescent approach, which measures long-term, inbreeding effective size, was four orders of magnitude lower than the estimate of current census size, suggesting that factors presently driving N(e)/N to low values among red drum in the northern Gulf may have operated similarly in the past. Models that predict N(e)/N exclusively from demographic and life-history features will seriously overestimate N(e) if variance in reproductive success and variance in productivity among spatially discrete demes is underestimated. Our results indicate that these variances, especially variance in productivity among demes, must be large for red drum. Moreover, our study indicates that vertebrate populations with enormous adult census numbers may still be at risk relative to decline and extinction from genetic factors.  相似文献

In this study we investigated the developmental basis of adult phenotypes in a non-model organism, a polymorphic damselfly (Ischnura elegans) with three female colour morphs. This polymorphic species presents an ideal opportunity to study intraspecific variation in growth trajectories, morphological variation in size and shape during the course of ontogeny, and to relate these juvenile differences to the phenotypic differences of the discrete adult phenotypes; the two sexes and the three female morphs. We raised larvae of different families in individual enclosures in the laboratory, and traced morphological changes during the course of ontogeny. We used principal components analysis to examine the effects of Sex, Maternal morph, and Own morph on body size and body shape. We also investigated the larval fitness consequences of variation in size and shape by relating these factors to emergence success. Females grew faster than males and were larger as adults, and there was sexual dimorphism in body shape in both larval and adult stages. There were also significant effects of both maternal morph and own morph on growth rate and body shape in the larval stage. There were significant differences in body shape, but not body size, between the adult female morphs, indicating phenotypic integration between colour, melanin patterning, and body shape. Individuals that emerged successfully grew faster and had different body shape in the larval stage, indicating internal (non-ecological) selection on larval morphology. Overall, morphological differences between individuals at the larval stage carried over to the adult stage. Thus, selection in the larval stage can potentially result in correlated responses in adult phenotypes and vice versa.  相似文献

This study focuses on the impact of natural levels of UVBR (ultraviolet-B radiation: 280 to 315 nm) on bacterio- and phytoplankton (<10 mm) from the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea. Incident biologically effective doses (BEDs) and attenuation of biologically effective radiation in the water column were measured using a DNA biodosimeter. UVBR-induced DNA damage was measured as cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs), using an antibody directed to CPDs followed by chemiluminescent detection. Depth profiles of DNA damage were determined in two plankton size fractions (0.2 to 0.8 mm and 0.8 to 10 mm) collected down to 50 m depth. Furthermore, accumulation and removal of CPDs were monitored in surface plankton samples during several daily cycles. Small plankton (plankton <10 mm) composition was determined by flow cytometry. The plankton community in the Gulf of Aqaba was dominated by nonphototrophic bacteria and the free-living prochlorophyte Prochlorococcus spp. (<0.8 mm). In general, no DNA damage could be detected in dosimeter DNA below 15 m. In contrast, DNA damage (up to 124 CPD Mnucl-1) could be detected in all bacterio- and phytoplankton samples. DNA damage accumulated throughout the day, indicating that plankton in the Gulf of Aqaba undergo UVBR stress via CPD induction. Although the numbers of CPDs decreased during darkness, both size fractions showed some residual DNA damage at the end of the night. This suggests that dark repair processes did not remove all CPDs, or that part of the plankton community was incapable of repair at all. CPD levels in the two size fractions showed no significant differences in situ. During full solar radiation exposures (samples incubated in bags), more CPDs were detected in the smaller (0.2 to 0.8 mm) size fraction as compared to the larger (0.8 to 10 mm) size fraction. In these experiments, initial plankton composition was significantly different from the field samples. This implies that a shift in the population structure or irradiance conditions can lead to a significant change in UVBR sensitivity. In conclusion, the results show that the picoplankton-dominated phyto- and bacterioplankton communities in the clear surface waters from the Gulf of Aqaba undergo UVBR stress. Repair pathways are not sufficient to eliminate damage during or after UVBR exposure hours, suggesting photomortality as a potential loss parameter of the plankton community.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. An epizoic suctorian from Gulf of Maine coastal waters, designated as Paracineta sp., is described. Morphological measurements are given for 23 small, medium, and large specimens. Mean length was 200 μ and average cell body diameter 39 μ. Of 21 copepod species and 19 zooplankton groups examined, only copepods of the genus Metridia showed any Paracineta attached. Suctorian occurrence was, with a single exception, limited to adult copepods, with the larger females showing the heaviest incidence. Differences in areal occurrence were observed with greatest incidence of Paracineta on M. lucens in the eastern and central Gulf, and lowest numbers in the western area. This differential occurrence is accredited to an apparent cold water affinity of the suctorian. It is suggested that Paracineta could be carried into the Gulf during periodic intrusions of cool Nova Scotian water, reaching the western area in the southwesterly flowing Gulf of Maine eddy system. No significant differences in vertical distribution were found in Paracineta incidence on Metridia among the depths sampled (0, 10, 30, and 60 m). No harmful effect of Paracineta on Metridia was evident.  相似文献

We report here on two complementary experiments examining the effect of climate on morphological and life-history traits of antlion adults. We first examined whether body size and wing loading of emerging adults are plastic by raising larvae, collected from five antlion populations along Israel's sharp climatic gradient, in two environmental chambers simulating temperature and humidity of desert and Mediterranean climates. The variance in adult morphology was mostly related to body size, with adults of Mediterranean populations being larger than those of desert populations. Wing-to-thorax ratio was negatively correlated with temperature, compensating for the decrease in wing-beat frequency in colder environments. Differences between climatic treatments were significant for body size but not for the wing-to-thorax ratio, suggesting that body size is more plastic than the ratio between different body components. We next investigated how the exposure of antlion pupae to different climatic conditions influences the emerging adults. Adult body mass increased with final larval body mass at a faster rate when exposed to Mediterranean rather than desert conditions. Duration of the pupa stage was positively correlated with final larval mass, but only under Mediterranean conditions. Adult survival increased with initial mass (after eclosion), but was lower under desert conditions. Similarly, adults lost mass at a faster rate when exposed to desert conditions. Notably, the exposure of the pupae to varying climatic conditions had no effect on adult morphology. Climate is a major factor affecting insect life span and body size. Since body size is strongly linked to fecundity and survival, climate thus has a twofold effect on fitness: directly, and indirectly through body size.  相似文献

Physiological and morphological comparisons were made between the short-winged (SW) and long-winged (LW) morphs of a cricket, Modicogryllus confirmatus, to determine the cost of the flight capacity and the physiological mechanisms underlying trade-offs between different life history traits related to migration and reproduction. Both wingmorphs grew at a similar rate and no consistent correlation was found between nymphal development and adult body size. The metathoracic muscles at adult emergence represented 4.2% of the wet body weight in the SW morph and 10.5% in the LW morph. Fat content of the body at adult emergence was positively correlated to dry body weight, but no significant difference was found in mean fat content between the two wingmorphs or between sexes after body weight was adjusted. SW females fed ad libitum produced significantly more eggs than LW females during the first 20days of adult life. Egg production was not correlated to either body size or the duration of nymphal development. LW adults lived longer than SW ones when kept with water alone or when given various amounts of food on day 1 and otherwise kept with water alone. In females, a highly significant correlation was found between longevity and egg production, indicating the presence of a trade-off. LW females mainly allocated the energy from food to flight muscle development and general maintenance of the body rather than to egg production, whereas SW females used it for egg production and longevity. LW females that had been de-alated at adult emergence histolyzed the flight muscle and used the energy from food for egg production almost exclusively. These results suggest that energy allocation and trade-offs after adult emergence may play crucial roles in the functional differentiation of the two wingmorphs.  相似文献

Many small plovers Charadrius spp. have sexually monomorphic plumage and cryptic sexual size dimorphism. The objective of our study was to assess the variation in body sizes between male and female plovers breeding in Madagascar. We collected blood samples and data on adult body sizes of four small plovers (Madagascar Plover Charadrius thoracicus, Kittlitz's Plover C. pecuarius, White-fronted Plover C. marginatus and Three-banded Plover C. tricollaris), and used molecular genetic markers to sex the adults. We found significant differences in body size among the four species, and between sexes. Furthermore, individuals from the southern ecoregion tended to be larger than in the western ecoregion. The Madagascar Plover's body size was significantly more dimorphic than the Kittlitz's and White-fronted Plovers. Breeding Malagasy plovers' show significant sexual size dimorphism (SSD): Madagascar Plover females were heavier and had longer wings than males, whereas the males had longer tarsi; in White-fronted Plover only wing length was different between the sexes. Taken together, our work reports SSD in small African plovers that exhibit monomorphic plumage, and we propose that SSD may be more common than currently acknowledged; we term this 'cryptic sexual size dimorphism'. Our results also suggest sexual selection and/or natural selection exert different pressures on body size in different Malagasy plover species.  相似文献

The skeletal sample from Grotta dell’Uzzo, Sicily (2 adult females and 5 adult males) was compared to a number of more representative population samples from Western Europe and the Mediterranean Basin. The majority of these were from Italian pre- and protohistoric sites. The research protocol analyzed skeletal indicators of labour activity and sexual division of labour (body size and proportions, sexual dimorphism, limb lateralization, bone robustness, the development of muscular attachments, accessory articular facets, signs of muscular hyperfunction). Sexual dimorphism and limb lateralization showed some regular patterns of possible general significance in all the samples examined here. A general pattern of gracilization and de-specialization of physical activity is observed in the Mesolithic as compared to the Upper Palaeolithic samples. The main features of the Mesolithic samples are: a reduction of body size and bone robustness, a lower degree of sexual dimorphism and limb bone asymmetry, a reduction of the mechanical stress on the lower limbs indicated by less pronounced muscular attachments and reduced talar flattening. This trend is reversed towards the Neolithic period. The main features of these variations are discussed in relation to economic and environmental changes. The Uzzo sample fits well into the general picture of the Western European Mesolithic, although showing some intermediate features between the Mesolithic and the Neolithic samples.
