Low strength wastewaters can be those with chemical oxygen demand (COD) below 2,000 mg/l. The anaerobic treatment of such wastewaters has not been fully explored so far. The suboptimal reaction rates with low substrate concentrations, and the presence of dissolved oxygen in the influent are regarded as possible constraints. In this study, the treatment of low strength soluble wastewaters containing ethanol or whey was studied in lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludged bed (UASB) reactors at 30°C. The high treatment performance obtained demonstrates that UASB reactors are viable for treating both types of wastewaters at low COD concentrations. The treatment of the ethanol containing wastewater resulted in COD removal efficiencies exceeding 95% at organic loading rates (OLR) between 0.3 to 6.8 g COD/l-d with influent concentrations in the range of 422 to 943 mg COD/l. In the case of the more complex whey containing wastewater, COD removal efficiencies exceeded 86% at OLRs up to 3.9 g COD/l·, as long as the COD influent was above 630 mg/l. Lowering the COD influent resulted in decreased efficiency with sharper decrease at values below 200 mg/l. Acidification instead of methanogenesis was found to be the rate limiting step in the COD removal at low concentrations, which was not the case when treating ethanol. The effect of dissolved oxygen in the influent as a potential danger in anaerobic treatment was investigated in reactors fed with and without dissolved oxygen. Compared with the control reactor, the reactor receiving oxygen showed no detrimental effects in the treatment performance. Thus, the presence of dissolved oxygen in dilute wastewaters is expected to be of minor importance in practice. 相似文献

The influence of a high energy substrate, i.e. sucrose, on the granular sludge yield and the development of different types of granular sludge was investigated by using Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed (UASB) reactors fed with synthetic wastewater. The feed COD was a mixture of volatile fatty acids (VFA) i.e., 20, 40, and 40% of the COD as C2-, C3-, and C4-VFA, respectively. Furthermore, experiments were carried out in which 10 and 30% of the VFA COD was substituted with sucrose. The following distinctly different types of granules were observed in each testrun: in the reactor fed with solely VFA, black (B) and white (W) granules developed; in the reactor fed with a mixture of 90% VFA and 10% sucrose, three types of granules i.e., B, W, and grey (G) granules could be seen; in the reactor fed with 70% VFA and 30% sucrose, only W and G granules were found. The granular sludge yield increased proportional to the amount of sucrose COD. At steady-state performance of the reactors, specific acidogenic (SAA) and methanogenic (SMA) activity tests on these granules revealed that B granules had the highest SMA with low SAA. The W granules had very high SMA with low SAA. G granules gave the highest SAA with a considerable SMA. Measurement of coenzyme F420 revealed that B granules consist mainly of acetoclastic methanogens. The fore-mentioned tests were supplemented with analyses of the wash-out cells present in the reactor effluent and the results suggested that acidogens, if present, prevail at the granule surface. The B granules were particularly rich in Ca, Mn, and Zn minerals. The size distribution analysis showed that the granule diameter increased in the following order: B相似文献

对处理不同废水的几种厌氧消化器生物量中优势产甲烷菌的观察 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The biomass taken from AF, ABR, and UASB digesters treating municipal wastewater, swine waste and molassese stillage wastewater, municipal and molassese stillage wastewater respectively, were observed by light, epifluorescence microscope and scanning electron microscope. The prevalent methanogens in these digesters were Methanothrix. Exception for ABR carried out to treat swine waste, Methanosarcina with three forms of aggregations, cysts, and granules were presented in other digesters. A suggestion can be made that reactors with packing materials, such as, anaerobic filters, anaerobic contact beds and two-phase methanation digesters can be used to accumulate Methanosarcina due to their morphological, mu max, and Ks characteristics, in order to increase the wastewater treatment efficiency further. 相似文献

The effect of cationic polymer additives on biomass granulation and COD removal efficiency had been examined in lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors, treating low strength synthetic wastewater (COD 300-630 mg/l). Under identical conditions, two reactors were operated with and without polymer additives in inoculum under four different organic loading rates (OLRs). The optimum polymer dose was adopted based upon the results of jar test and settling test carried out with inoculum seed sludge. With the use of thick inoculum, SS greater than 110 g/l and VSS/SS ratio less than 0.3, granulation was observed in UASB reactor treating synthetic wastewater as well as actual sewage, when OLR was greater than 1.0 kg COD/m(3) d. Polymer additive with such thick inoculum was observed to deteriorate percentage granules and COD removal efficiency compared to inoculum without polymer additives. At OLR less than 1.0 kg COD/m(3) d, proper granulation could not be achieved in both the reactors inoculated with and without polymer additive. Also, under this low loading, drastic reduction in COD removal efficiency was observed with polymer additives in inoculum. Hence, it is rational to conclude that biomass granulation for treatment of low strength biodegradable wastewater depends on the applied loading rate and selection of thick inoculum sludge. 相似文献

Studies have been carried out to correlate biogas-induced mixing and granulation in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors, treating low-strength as well as high-strength biodegradable wastewaters. A dimensionless granulation index (GI) has been framed taking into account the mixing in sludge bed due to produced biogas. Analysis of full-scale, pilot-scale and lab-scale UASB reactors treating actual wastewaters reveals the significance of biogas-induced mixing, represented by GI, on granulation of biomass in the reactors. For obtaining proper granulation in UASB reactors (percentage granules greater than 50%, w/w), resulting in higher chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency, it is recommended to maintain GI values in the range of 15,000–57,000. 相似文献

Granulation of biomass in thermophilic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors treating acidified wastewaters 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The development of granular sludge in thermophilic (55 degrees C) upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors was investigated. Acetate and a mixture of acetate and butyrate were used as substrates, serving as models for acidified waste-waters. Granular sludge with either Methanothrix or Methanosarcina as the predominant acetate utilizing methanogen was cultivated by allowing the loading rate to increase whenever the acetate concentration in the effluent dropped below 200 and 700 mg COD/L, respectively. The highest methane generation rates, up to 162 kg CH(4)-COD/m(3) day, or 2.53 mole CH(4)/L day, were achieved at hydraulic retention times down to 21 min, with granules consisting of Methanothrix. The formation of Methanothrix granules did not depend on the type of seed material, nor on the addition of inert support particles. The growth of granules proceeded rapidly with adapted seed material, even when the reactors were inoculated with low concentrations. With mesophilic seed materials growth of granules took much longer. Thermophilic Methanothrix granules strongly resemble mesophilic granules of the "filamentous" type. Some factors governing the thermophilic granulation process are discussed. 相似文献

The use of anaerobic processes to treat low-strength wastewater has been increasing in recent years due to their favourable
performance-costs balance. For optimal results, it is necessary to identify reactor configurations that are best suited for
this kind of application. This paper reports on the comparative study carried out with two high-rate anaerobic reactor systems
with the objective of evaluating their performances when used for the treatment of low-strength, complex wastewater. One of
the systems is the commonly used up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The other is the up-flow staged sludge bed
(USSB) system in which the reactor was divided longitudinally into 3, 5 and 7 compartments by the use of baffles. The reactors
(9 l) were fed with a synthetic, soluble and colloidal waste (chemical oxygen demand (COD) < 1000 mg/l) and operated at 28°C
and 24 h hydraulic retention time. Intermediate flow hydraulics, between plug-flow and completely-mixed, in the UASB and 7
stages USSB reactors allowed efficient degradation of substrates with minimum effluent concentrations. Low number of compartments
in the USSB reactors increased the levels of short-circuiting thus reducing substrate removal efficiencies. All reactors showed
high COD removal efficiencies (93–98%) and thus can be regarded as suitable for the treatment of low strength, complex wastewater.
Staged anaerobic reactors can be a good alternative for this kind of application provided they are fitted with a large enough
(≥7) number of compartments to fully take advantage of their strengths. Scale factors seem to have influenced importantly
on the comparison between one and multi staged sludge-bed reactors and, therefore, observations made here could change at
larger reactor volumes. 相似文献

Granulation during the start-up of a UASB reactor used in the treatment of low strength wastewaters 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
A glucose-based wastewater was efficiently degradaded by acidogenic bacteria, with a glucose removal efficiency close to 90%, and although a distinctive granular structure could not be observed, fluffy conglomerates developed in an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor. Subsequently, the pre-acidification of the wastewater promoted the granulation process. An enrichment in methanogenic bacteria was observed on the microscope and was confirmed by an increase in the specific methanogenic activity from 0.1 up to 0.5kgCOD/kgVSS.day. Such dynamics of microbial communities was also verified through changes in the polysaccharide and protein content, as well as in the electrophoretic mobility of the biomass. 相似文献

Aerobic granulation is a promising process for wastewater treatment, but this granulation process is very complicated and is affected by many factors. Thus, a mathematical model to quantitatively describe such a granulation process is highly desired. In this work, by taking into account all of key steps including biomass growth, increase in particle size and density, detachment, breakage and sedimentation, an one‐dimensional mathematic model was developed to simulate the granulation process of activated sludge in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Discretization methodology was applied by dividing operational time, sedimentation process, size fractions and slices into discretized calculation elements. Model verification and prediction for aerobic granulation process were conducted under four different conditions. Four parameters indicative of granulation progression, including mean radius, biomass discharge ratio, total number, and bioparticle size distribution, were predicted well with the model. An optimum controlling strategy, automatically adjusted of settling time, was also proposed based on this model. Moreover, aerobic granules with a density higher than 120 g VSS/L and radius in a range of 0.4–1.0 mm were predicted to have both high settling velocity and substrate utilization rate, and the corresponding optimum operating conditions were be determined. Experimental results demonstrate that the developed model is appropriate for simulating the formation of aerobic granules in SBRs. These results are useful for designing and optimizing the cultivation and operation of aerobic granule process. Biotechnol. Bioeng. 2013; 110: 1312–1322. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

The performance and biomass retention of an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor treating liquid fraction of dairy manure has been investigated at several organic loading rates. Two identical UASB reactors were employed. The biomass of one UASB reactor (FBR) had previously been treated with a cationic polyacrylamide, the other reactor was operated as a control reactor (CR). At 3 and 2 days of HRT both reactors functioned similarly, but at 1.5 days HRT some differences were observed between both effluents. Mean COD(T) removal percentages were 83.4% and 76.5%; COD(VFA) values in effluents were 977 and 2682 mg l(-1) for the FBR and the CR respectively. The VSS initial value in both reactors was 25.66 g VSS, whereas after the experiment the quantities were 31.83 g VSS in the FBR and 23.18 g VSS in the CR reactors. Polymer addition resulted in a higher degree of biomass retention and better performance in the FBR reactor. 相似文献

Microorganisms catalyse the reaction and in this study, mainly the effect of different concentration of biomass on COD removal was investigated. Three sets of two-compartment reactors were established. The cation exchange membrane (CEM) was employed in each reactor and 0.5 V of electricity was supplied. Graphite rod employed in cathodic part and a combination of graphite rod and graphite granules were used in anodic chamber. The highest rate of COD removal (40 ± 2.0 ppm/h) was achieved in the reactor which had initial VSS at 6130 mg/l, whereas the slowest rate of 23 ± 1.2 ppm/h in the reactor started with 3365 mgVSS/l. Some ammonia removal was also noticed during the operation. Further understanding and improvement is needed to be competitive against traditional wastewater treatment processes. 相似文献

A kinetic modeling-based study was carried out to evaluate the start-up performance of a 10-L up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket
(UASB) reactor treating municipal wastewater under different organic and hydraulic loading conditions. The reactor was operated
for 105 days (around 4 months) below 20 °C and with three different hydraulic retention times of 24, 12 and 5 h. Imposed volumetric
organic loading rates (OLR) ranged from 0.57 (±0.05) to 11.78 (±0.85) kg TCOD/m3-day. Although relatively high incoming volumetric OLR values were employed to the system, the UASB reactor demonstrated a
favorable performance on the anaerobic treatability of municipal wastewater, and no process failure was recorded in the start-up
stage. On the basis of experimental results, the modified Stover–Kincannon model was successfully applied to define the start-up
kinetics with a very high value of the correlation coefficient (R = 0.9729). Maximum substrate utilization rate constant and saturation constant of the modified Stover–Kincannon model were
determined as U
max = 1.996 g/L-day and K
B = 1.536 g/L-day, respectively. 相似文献

The anaerobic biodegradation of carbon tetrachloride (CT) was investigated during the granulation process by reducing the hydraulic retention time, increasing the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and CT loadings in a 2l laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. Anaerobic unacclimated sludge and glucose were used as seed and primary substrate, respectively. Granules were developed 4 weeks after start-up, which grew at an accelerated rate for 8 months, and then became fully grown. The effect of operational parameters such as influent CT concentrations, COD, CT loading, food to biomass ratio and specific methanogenic activity (SMA) were also considered during granulation. The granular sludge cultivated had a maximum diameter of 2.1 mm and SMA of 1.6 g COD/g total suspended solid (TSS) day. COD and CT removal efficiencies of 92 and 88% were achieved when the reactor was firstly operating at CT and COD loading rates of 17.5 mg/l day and 12.5 g/l day, respectively. This corresponds to hydraulic retention time of 0.28 day and food to biomass ratio of 0.5 g COD/g TSS day. Kinetic coefficients of maximum specific substrate utilization rate, half velocity coefficient, growth yield coefficient and decay coefficient were determined to be 2.4 × 10–3 mg CT/TSS day–1, 1.37 mg CT/l, 0.69 mg TSS/mg CT and 0.046 day–1, respectively for CT biotransformation during granulation. 相似文献

Long-term competition between sulfate reducing and methanogenic bacteria in UASB reactors treating volatile fatty acids 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

The competition between acetate utilizing methane-producing bacteria (MB) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was studied in mesophilic (30 degrees C) upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactors (upward velocity 1 m h-1; pH 8) treating volatile fatty acids and sulfate. The UASB reactors treated a VFA mixture (with an acetate:propionate:butyrate ratio of 5:3:2 on COD basis) or acetate as the sole substrate at different COD:sulfate ratios. The outcome of the competition was evaluated in terms of conversion rates and specific methanogenic and sulfidogenic activities. The COD:sulfate ratio was a key factor in the partitioning of acetate utilization between MB and SRB. In excess of sulfate (COD:sulfate ratio lower than 0.67), SRB became predominant over MB after prolonged reactor operation: 250 and 400 days were required to increase the amount of acetate used by SRB from 50 to 90% in the reactor treating, respectively, the VFA mixture or acetate as the sole substrate. The competition for acetate was further studied by dynamic simulations using a mathematical model based on the Monod kinetic parameters of acetate utilizing SRB and MB. The simulations confirmed the long term nature of the competition between these acetotrophs. A high reactor pH (+/-8), a short solid retention time (<150 days), and the presence of a substantial SRB population in the inoculum may considerably reduce the time required for acetate-utilising SRB to outcompete MB. 相似文献

Performance and granulation in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating saline sulfate wastewater 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor was employed to treat saline sulfate wastewater. Mesophilic operation (35 ± 0.5 °C) was performed with hydraulic retention time fixed at 16 h. When the salinity was 28 g L?1, the chemical oxygen demand and sulfate removal efficiencies were 52 and 67 %, respectively. The salinity effect on sulfate removal was less than that on organics removal. The methane productions were 887 and 329 cm3 L?1 corresponding to the NaCl concentrations of 12 and 28 g L?1, respectively. High salinity could stimulate microbes to produce more extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and granulation could be performed better. Besides, with the high saline surroundings, a great deal of Na+ compressed the colloidal electrical double-layer, neutralized the negative charge of the sludge particles and decreased their electrostatic repulsion. The repulsion barrier disappeared and coagulation took place. The maximum size of granules was 5 mm, which resulted from the coupled triggering forces of high EPSs and Na+ contents. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were dominant in the high saline surroundings while the methane-producing archaea dominated in the low saline surroundings. The SRB were affected least by the salinity. 相似文献

Effects of bioaugmentation strategies in UASB reactors with a methanogenic consortium for removal of phenolic compounds 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5

The removal of phenol, ortho- (o-) and para- (p-)cresol was studied with two series of UASB reactors using unacclimatized granular sludges bioaugmented with a consortium enriched against these substances. The parameters studied were the amount of inoculum added to the sludges and the method of immobilization of the inoculum. Two methods were used, adsorption to the biomass or encapsulation within calcium alginate beads. In the bioaugmentation by adsorption experiment, and with a 10% inoculum, complete phenol removal was obtained after 36 d, while 178 d were required in the control reactor. For p-cresol, 95% removal was obtained in the bioaugmented reactor on day 48 while 60 d were required to achieve 90% removal in the control reactor. For o-cresol, the removals were only marginally better with the bioaugmented reactors. Tests performed with the reactors biomass under non-limiting substrate concentrations showed that the specific activities of the bioaugmented biomasses were larger than the original biomass for phenol, and p-cresol even after 276 of operations, showing that the inoculum bacteria successfully colonized the sludge granules. Immobilization of the inoculum by encapsulation in calcium alginate beads, was performed with 10% of the inoculum. Results showed that the best activities were obtained when the consortium was encapsulated alone and the beads added to the sludges. This reactor presented excellent activity and the highest removal of the various phenolic compounds a few days after start-up. After 90 d, a high-phenolic compounds removal was still observed, demonstrating the effectiveness of the encapsulation technique for the start-up and maintenance of high-removal activities. 相似文献

A two-continuous mesophilic (37 ± 2 °C) UASB system with step-feed was investigated as an attractive optimization strategy for enhancing COD and total phenols removal of the system and improving aerobic biodegradability of real coal gasification wastewater. Through the step-feed period, the maximum removal efficiencies of COD and total phenols reached 55-60% and 58-63% respectively in the system, at an influent flow distribution ratio of 0.2 and influent COD concentration of 2500 mg/L; the corresponding efficiencies were at low levels of 45-50% and 43-50% respectively at total HRT of 48 h during the single-feed period. The maximum specific methanogenic activity and substrate utilization rate were 592 ± 16 mg COD-CH4/(gVSS d) and 89 ± 12 mg phenol/(gVSS d) during the step-feed operation. After the anaerobic digestion with step-feed, the aerobic effluent COD concentration decreased from 270 ± 9 to 215 ± 10 mg/L. The results suggested that step-feed enhanced the degradation of refractory organics in the second reactor. 相似文献

Influence of extrinsic factors on granulation in UASB reactor 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

The aim of this mini-review is to synthesize and analyze information on how the process of granulation is affected by environmental and operational conditions in the reactor. The factors reviewed are temperature, pH, alkalinity, organic loading rate, upflow velocity, nature and strength of substrate, nutrients, multivalent cations and heavy metals, microbial ecology of seed sludge, exo-cellular polymer, and addition of natural and synthetic polymers. Careful temperature control and adequate alkalinity is required for generation and maintenance of granules. Nature and strength of substrate in conjunction with intra-granular diffusion to a large extent determines the microstructure of the granules. The divalent cations such as calcium and iron may enhance granulation by ionic bridging and linking exo-cellular polymers. However, their presence in excess may lead to cementation due to precipitation leading to increased ash content and mass transfer limitation. The addition of external additives such as ionic polymers may enhance granulation in the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors. 相似文献

Recent environmental concerns have prompted a re-evaluation of conventional management strategies and refueled the search of innovative waste management practices. In this sense, the anaerobic digestion of both fat and the remaining complex organic matter present in dairy wastewaters is attractive, although the continuous operation of high rate anaerobic processes treating this type of wastewaters causes the failure of the process. This work accesses the influence of non-feeding period length on the intermittent operation of mesophilic UASB reactors treating dairy wastewater, in order to allow the biological degradation to catch up with adsorption phenomenon. During the experiments, two UASB reactors were subject to three organic loading rates, ranging from 6 to 12 g(COD) x L(-1) x d(-1), with the same daily load applied to both reactors, each one with a different non-feeding period. Both reactors showed good COD removal efficiencies (87-92%). A material balance for COD in the reactors during the feeding and non-feeding periods showed the importance of the feedless period, which allowed the biomass to degrade substrate that was accumulated during the feeding period. The reactor with the longest non-feeding period had a better performance, which resulted in a higher methane production and adsorption capacity for the same organic load applied with a consequent less accumulation of substrate into the biomass. In addition, both reactors had a stable operation for the organic load of 12 g(COD) x L(-1) x d(-1), which is higher than the maximum applicable load reported in literature for continuous systems (3-6 g(COD) x L(-1) x d(-1)). 相似文献
