The parenthesomes of Sirobasidium magnum (Sirobasidiaceae) are composed of arrays of ampulliform vesicles from whose bases microfibrils connect to bands of striated material in the dolipore orifices. This septal morphology and the associated character of a yeast haplophase are comparable to that found in species of the Tremellaceae and Filobasidiaceae. The similarity of these basic characteristics in these three families supports their separation into the suborder Tremellineae (species of the Tremellales with regular dolipore/parenthesome septa and mycelial monokaryons are grouped in the suborder Exidiineae).  相似文献

Summary The dolipore and parenthesomes are major components of the septal apparatus in wild type homokaryon and dikaryon strains of Schizophyllum commune. The parenthesome lacuna contains a matrix material that produces a lamellar appearance. The domain between the pore and the parenthesome is normally devoid of any organelles or membrane material, but is traversed by a system of microfilaments. The filaments pass through the septal pore, which is obstructed by a pair of opposed occlusions. In the homokaryon carrying a B-factor mutation, which leads to septal degradation, the septa as initially synthesized appear normal apart from the intrusion of membranous vesicles into the pore domain. In those homokaryons which carry a modifier mutation, preventing septal degradation, in addition to the B-factor mutation, once again the pore domain is invaded by membraneous vesicles and in some cases the parenthesomes become disorganized.  相似文献

Summary Light and electron microscopic investigations of fruit-body primordia of the basidiomycetesSchizophyllum commune andCoprinus cinereus showed that hyphal fusions are common in specific areas of the fruit-body primordia of both species. In these areas conspicuous amounts of a mucilaginous substance occur between the closely packed hyphae. A possible function of this mucilage is to aid the adhesion of hyphae prior to fusion. In the fruit-body primordium ofCoprinus cinereus the dolipore/parenthesome septum is surrounded by an additional hemispherical membranous cap (outer cap). Such a cap was never found inSchizophyllum commune fruit-body primordia.  相似文献

The ustilaginaceous fungi, traditionally synonymous with the smuts, now include recent taxa derived from the yeasts. Although generally placed next to the rusts, these fungi only superficially resemble the Uredinales-the resistant cell, here termed a ustospore, is not a teliospore and its one or more germ hyphae bear somatic sporidia, not meiotically derived basidiospores. Examination of the ultrastructure of a number of species shows the septa to be basidiomycetously layered but with pores lacking a dolipore/parenthesome complex. Further, inLeucosporidium andRhodosporidium, in which the clamps also have simple pores, the electron microscopic observations admit the interpretation that the ustospore is an encysted proascus. Because the characteristics of these fungi do not allow them to be satisfactorily included among either the Ascomycota or the Basidiomycota, it is proposed to accommodate them in a new taxon of equal rank, the Division Ustomycota. Grateful acknowledgement is made to the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Zuiver Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (ZWO) for their support of this research. It is also a particular pleasure to thank Professor J. G. H. Wessels and Dr. N. J. W. Kreger-van Rij for their hospitality and to extend my appreciation to the Laboratory of Ultrastructural Biology for use of facilities. A particular note of gratitude is made to Hans Cappon for the preparation of the drawings. This study was made during a leave of absence from North Carolina State University.  相似文献

The hypothesis suggested by Coates that pentadactyly arose twice is based on the presumed affinities between Tulerpeton, embolomeres, and amniotes. Flaws were found in the coding of some characters that supported this clade and, once corrected, the matrix fails to support the proposed phylogeny. Furthermore, interpretation of the phylogeny of Coates is difficult because no amniotes and no lissamphibians were included in this analysis. A reappraisal of the affinities of Tulerpeton using a matrix composed of a greater range of taxa suggests that it is a stem-tetrapod, that pentadactyly arose only once, and that the first tetrapod was already pentadactyl.  相似文献

We isolated Rhizoctonia-like fungi from populations of the threatened orchid Cypripedium macranthos. In ultrastructural observations of the septa, the isolates had a flattened imperforate parenthesome consisting of two electron-dense membranes bordered by an internal electron-lucent zone, identical to the septal ultrastructure of Rhizoctonia repens (teleomorph Tulasnella), a mycorrhizal fungus of many orchid species. However, hyphae of the isolates did not fuse with those of known tester strains of R. repens and grew less than half as fast as those of R. repens. In phylogenetic analyses, sequences for rDNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the isolates were distinct from those of the taxonomically identified species of Tulasnella. On the basis of the ITS sequences, the isolates clustered into two groups that corresponded exactly with the clades demonstrated for other Cypripedium spp. from Eurasia and North America despite the geographical separation, suggesting high specificity in the Cypripedium–fungus association. In addition, the two phylogenetic groups corresponded to two different plant clones at different developmental stages. The fungi from one clone constituted one group and did not belong to the other fungal group isolated from the other clone. The possibility of switching to a new mycorrhizal partner during the orchid’s lifetime is discussed.  相似文献

Barinophyton citrulliforme is definitely proven to be a tracheophyte. The vascular cylinder of the main axis is an exarch protostele composed of tracheids having a continuous secondary wall folded into protrusions into the cell lumen. These protrusions delineate the position of annular thickenings which were deposited earlier than the continuous secondary wall. Between successive protrusions, the later-deposited secondary wall is interrupted by minute pitlike structures. It is suggested that the secondary walls of the tracheids were laid down in a two-phase depositional sequence. The fertile system of B. citrulliforme consists of a main axis bearing spirally arranged strobili. The strobilus consists of an axis that bears two alternate rows of sporangiferous appendages. The sporangiferous appendages are borne laterally along the strobilar axis and recurve abaxially around the axis. The sporangia are attached along the inside curve of the appendages, one sporangium per appendage, each containing both microspores and megaspores. This species thus exhibits sporangial heterospory which is considered to be an adaptation to an aquatic habit and the sporangia are considered to be functional analogs of the sporocarps of Marsilea. The interpretation of the strobilus is morphologically identical to Ananiev's interpretation of the strobilus of Pectinophyton bipectinatum; consequently P. bipectinatum is here transferred to Barinophyton as B. robustius comb. nov.  相似文献

The genus Wallemia comprises xerophilic species. Based on parenthesome ultrastructure it has been linked to the Filobasidiales (basidiomycetes). Species show a unique type of conidiogenesis, including basauxic development of fertile hyphae, segregation of conidial units more or less basipetally, and disarticulation of conidial units into mostly four arthrospore-like conidia. Wallemia is known from air, soil, dried food (causing spoilage), and salt. It can be isolated from hypersaline water of man-made salterns on different continents. Based on analyses of the nuclear small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) Wallemia has been placed into a highly supported clade together with Ustilaginomycetes and Hymenomycetes (Basidiomycota). Within this clade, it possesses an isolated position distantly related to the Filobasidiales and was characterized by numerous nucleotide substitutions not shared by any other fungus. Tests on xerotolerance indicated that Wallemia presents one of the most xerophilic fungal taxa. Xerotolerance is otherwise rare in the Basidiomycota. To acknowledge its unique morphology, evolution, and xerotolerance, a new basidiomycetous class Wallemiomycetes covering an order Wallemiales, is proposed. Based on differences in conidial size, xerotolerance, and sequence data of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS rDNA), at least three Wallemia species are segregated, identified as Wallemia ichthyophaga, Wallemia sebi, and Torula epizoa var. muriae, for which the combination Wallemia muriae is proposed. The three species are neotypified. Wallemia ichthyophaga differs from W. sebi and W. muriae in numerous nucleotides of the SSU and ITS rDNA. This high variation within Wallemia indicates existence of at least two cryptic genera not distinguishable by morphological characters.  相似文献

Moore , R. T., and J. H. Mc Alear . (Cornell U., Ithaca, N. Y.) Fine structure of mycota. 7. Observations on septa of Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes. Amer. Jour. Bot. 49(1): 86–94. Illus. 1962.—Electron microscopy of 13 carpomycete species (5 Ascomycetes, 5 Basidiomycetes, and 3 Deuteromycetes) presents evidence that suggests there is an Ascomycete- and a Basidiomycete-type septum. The observed Ascomycete septa taper slightly or not at all toward a simple, clear-channel, central pore, while the observed Basidiomycete septa flare sharply and broadly at the center to produce what is termed a dolipore septum. On each side of this septum is a double membrane structure that is crescent-shaped in section. This is given the name parenthesome. These dolipore-parenthesome septa were found to be characteristic of basidiocarpic, dikaryotic, hyphae. Interpretative drawings of both types of septa are presented. From these and the micrographs, it is not difficult to see how materials, including nuclei, could pass through the Ascomycete-type septum, but it would appear that the modifications of the Basidiomycete-type septum while maintaining cytoplasmic continuity would prohibit nuclear migration in dikaryotic hyphae. It is postulated that as the plant and animal phylogenetic lines have developed actual diploidism, the terminal group of the fungi may have achieved functional diploidism. Of the 3 species of Deuteromycetes examined, 2, Aspergillus variecolor and Stilbum zacalloxanthum, have typical Ascomycete-type septa; the third, QM 7739, has Basidiomycete-type septa. This fungus is a species of Sclerotium, but the present confusion and lack of definitive information regarding the taxonomy, genetics, and perfect stage of this genus prohibit the enlarging at present on the possible significance of this observation.  相似文献

A remarkable assemblage of dinosaur trackways in the Winton Formation (Albian–Cenomanian) at Lark Quarry, in western Queensland, Australia, has long been regarded as evidence of a stampede involving small theropods, whose tracks were classified in the ichnogenus Skartopus, and small ornithopods, whose tracks represented a second ichnogenus, Wintonopus. However, one recently-published study has claimed that existing interpretation of Lark Quarry is incorrect: it maintains that all the track-makers were ornithopods, that the ichnogenus Skartopus is a variant form of Wintonopus, and that most of the Lark Quarry track-makers were not running but more probably swimming downstream in a current of water. Those iconoclastic claims are investigated here and shown to be untenable. They derive from overgeneralized interpretation of the Lark Quarry track assemblage and invoke ad hoc auxiliary hypotheses which are either untestable or demonstrably incorrect. Closer inspection of the evidence underpinning those claims corroborates the existing interpretation of Lark Quarry as the site of a dinosaurian stampede and confirms the validity of the original distinction between theropod tracks (Skartopus) and ornithopod tracks (Wintonopus).  相似文献

The fine structure of the dikaryotic form ofCyathus bulleri Brodie was generally found to be similar to that of other hyphal forms of the Basidiomycetes. The nuclear walls were doubled, porous and in some cases connected to the endoplasmic reticulum. The presence of typical as well as filamentous and U-shaped mitochondria was confirmed. Other cellular structures and organelles, among them vacuoles, vesicular and myelinoid-like bodies, often associated with the cell membranes, glycogen and ribosomes were also observed in the cytoplasm. The presence of the dolipore/parenthesome apparatus and clamp connections typical of the Basidiomycetes was established.  相似文献

Permineralized Lepidostrobus specimens were examined from the Westphalian A of England, Westphalian B (Breathitt) of the Appalachian Basin, and the Westphalian D (Desmoinesian) of the Illinois Basin and Western Interior Coal Region to correlate species of the dispersed spore genus Lycospora with source cones and cone types (“species”) with parent plants. Based on 51 specimens of Lepidostrobus oldhamius sensu Balbach, three cone types, producing three species of Lycospora, are recognized. Lycospora pellucida occurs in smaller diameter cones with a prominently coronate stele; cones are associated with Lepidophloios harcourtii from the Westphalian A-B. Lycospora pusilla occurs in larger diameter cones with a small “pith” containing elongate, sclerified, tanniferous cells from Westphalian D coal balls. Secretory cells also are present in sporophyll trace sheaths and in subarchesporial parenchyma pads in sporangia. The suggested plant source is Lepidodendron hickii. Lycospora granulata occurs in large cones with a large “pith” composed of thin-walled parenchyma; no secretory cells were observed in the “pith,” sporophyll traces, or subarchesporial pads. These cones are associated with Lepidophloios hallii from the Westphalian D. Association of Lycospora species with source lycopods increases the possibilities of paleoecological interpretation using microspores from Carboniferous coals.  相似文献

Pollen morphology of 15 species of Siphonoglossa and of two closely related groups was investigated. Two tribal-specific pollen types are found within Siphonoglossa sensu lato suggesting that the genus is artificial, composed of taxa belonging in several genera among two tribes (subtribes sensu Bremekamp) of Acanthaceae. Five taxa currently included in an informal subgeneric category of Siphonoglossa have tricolporate, prolate pollen (termed Type I) that is characteristic of Odontonemeae (= Odontoneminae, Justicieae). Pollen of the remaining taxa, belonging in two formal sections of the genus, are mostly 2-porate, bilateral (Type II) with a sexine sculpturing characteristic of Justicieae (= Justiciinae). Pollen of section Siphonoglossa is rather uniform, 2-porate, bilateral with lolongate pores, and seem to delimit a natural group. Taxa of section Pentaloba have a more heterogeneous pollen morphology, mostly 2-porate, bilateral with lalongate pores. Controversial aspects of the interpretation of pollen morphology in Justiciinae are presented and their relevance to this study are examined. Hypothetical trends in the evolution of pollen of Justiciinae are discussed and the application of pollen morphology to taxonomy of the genus is presented, including a recommendation for narrowing the generic concept of Siphonoglossa to the taxa of the type section.  相似文献

Electron microscopy of dried preparations of Arctic nanoplankton has permitted a second species of the recently erected genus Pappomonas Manton et Oates to be described and named. P. virgulosa sp. nov. is characterised by coccolith appendages composed of a central shaft ending in a cluster of four finger-like rods. There are also calcified plates of characteristic construction, without appendages. Detailed observations on the coccoliths, especially on the shapes and arrangement of component calcite crystallites and the presence of unmineralised components, have permitted further comparisons to be made with equivalent structures in Papposphaera lepida Tangen, recently investigated in the southern hemisphere, as well as with Pappomonas flabellifera Manton et Oates. As a working hypothesis, an interpretation of coccolith morphology in all three taxa has been formulated in terms of known structural components of uncalcified scales in Chrysochromulina spp. The need for fuller information on certain details, notably the coccolith bases in Pappomonas spp. is stressed.  相似文献

In Escherichia coli, the binding protein-dependent transport system for maltose and maltodextrins is composed of five proteins — LamB, MaIE, MaIF, MaIG and MaIK — located in the three layers of the bacterial envelope. Proteins MaIF and MaIG are hydrophobic inner membrane components mediating the energy-dependent translocation of substrates into the cytoplasm. In this paper, we analyse the topology of the MaIG protein by using methods based on the properties of fusions between maIG and‘phoA, a truncated gene encoding alkaline phosphatase lacking its translation initiation and exportation signals. Fusions were obtained by using either phage λTnphoA or by constructing in vitro fusions located randomly within the maIG gene. The deduced topological model suggests that MaIG spans the membrane six times and has its amino- and carboxy-termini in the cytoplasm. These results will be helpful for the interpretation of the phenotypes of mutants in maIG.  相似文献

A brief historical review of nematocyst terminology is given and three nomenclatural problems are discussed. It is proposed to combine the terms initiated by Weill (1934) with those of Schmidt (1969). A new mesobasic grade, intermediate between microbasic and macrobasic is proposed for amastigophores and p-mastigophores possessing a short Faltstück. A more liberal interpretation of Weill's (1934) terminology for nematocysts than that proposed by Cutress (1955) is suggested in respect of microbasic amastigophores and p-mastigophores. Basitrichs and b-mastigophores continue to be recognized as separate categories.deceased  相似文献

Here, we report the characterization of a human cDNA coding for the recently published amino acid sequence of a calcium-binding S100 protein, S100A12 (CGRP, calgranulin C, CAAF1, p6). The exon/intron structure of the S100A12 gene is similar to most other S100 genes. It is composed of three exons which are divided by two introns of 900 by and 400 bp. The protein is encoded by sequences in exons 2 and 3, with exon 2 coding for the N-terminal 45 amino acids and exon 3 coding for the C-terminal 46 amino acids. So far, ten S100 genes are known to be located on human chromosome 1q21 in a clustered organization. Hence, we investigated whether S100A11 (S1000, calgizzarin) and S100A12 are also localized in the S100 gene cluster. We found both genes within the cluster, with S100A11 being close to S100A10 and S100A12 between the genes S100A8 and S100A9. Therefore, the S100 gene cluster now is composed of 12 differentially expressed family members.  相似文献

Panochthus and Glyptodon are the Pleistocene Glyptodontidae having the greatest range of latitudinal distribution and elevation in South America. The most recent revisions of Panochthus recognized its high taxonomic diversification mainly distributed in the Chaco-Pampean region of Argentina, Uruguay, southern Bolivia and southern and north-eastern Brazil, while the Andean records are poorly known. This contribution aims: (a) to describe a new species of Panochthus from the Pleistocene of the surroundings of Potosi (Bolivia), which represents one of the highest known elevation records for fossil Xenarthra; (b) to carry out a phylogenetic analysis in order to test its location in Panochthus and relationship to some allied genera; (c) to discuss some palaeobiogeographical and morphological implications. The results show that, in agreement with previous studies, Panochthus is a natural group, being Propanochthus the sister taxa. This conclusion agrees, at least in part, with the original interpretation of Burmeister, who recognized Pr. bullifer as belonging to Panochthus. The genera Nopachtus and Phlyctaenopyga are more closely related to some ‘Plohophorini’ than to the clade Propanochthus + Panochthus. Within Panochthus, this new species occupies a relatively basal position as a sister taxon of the clade composed of P. tuberculatus, P. intermedius, and P. greslebini.http://zoobank.org/lsid:zoobank.org:pub:5A766550-DBCA-4C4A-BDB8-602E500E4954  相似文献

The functional interpretation of the cheek teeth and the mastication cycle of Lagomorpha are deduced from various aspects of tooth morphology of fossil and extant species. Mastication is composed of an almost orthal shearing and transverse grinding in a lingual direction. Shearing blades are not only indicated by facets but as well by thickened enamel. A primary shearing blade (PSB) inherited from stem lagomorphs occurs in all examined species. It can be correlated with facets 1 and 5 (sensu Crompton 1971) and occurs in very few mammals; it is conspicuously absent in the sister-taxon Rodentia. A secondary shearing blade (SSB) occurs in derived Ochotonidae and two basal Leporidae (Romerolagus and Pronolagus) as a convergent pattern. In fossil ochotonids from Europe, the “lagicone structure” is gradually reduced in favor of the SSB. Thus, ochotonids strengthen the shearing ability, whereas most leporids favor the grinding function realized by the partial crenulation of the enamel band of the re-entrant folds. For the mastication cycle, the distinct phases were recognized, related to phase I of the tribosphenic model. The first movement (phase Ia) is directed almost orthally, the second (phase Ib) lingually. Only in Lepus europaeus was an additional phase detected, which might correspond to phase II.  相似文献
