The rubber vine (Cryptostegia grandiflora) is an aggressive, invasive weed species with a high spreading potential that has caused great ecological impacts and economic costs to the areas in which it has been introduced. In Mexico, there is little information on the invasion of this species. In Baja California Sur (BCS), the first record of the species is documented from 1935 in one oasis. Despite the ecological problems that this invasive species may cause in the oases of BCS, little was known about its distribution and status. The aim of this work was to document the presence of the rubber vine in 57 oases in Baja California Sur during 2006–2008. The rubber vine was present in 22 (39%) of the sampled oases. The distribution pattern strongly suggests that the rubber vine had been introduced by the local population and then spread in the oasis and into the vicinity of streams and canyons. Vertebrate and invertebrate endemic oasis-dependent species may be at risk because the rubber vine can become a dominant species in oases and because reptiles and birds may not use the plant and instead avoid the areas where it grows. This is risky in fragile ecosystems immersed in a desert. Education and eradication of rubber vines from oases should be urgently done.  相似文献

Abstract: Rubber vine (Cryptostegia grandiflora) is an environmental weed that frequently invades riparian habitats in northern Australia. I examined the habitat use of lizards in riparian and woodland environments comprised of native and rubber vine vegetation. Rubber vine was a major component of vegetation in the riparian habitat (approximately 40%), but only a minor component of woodland habitat (approximately 5%). Of 132 lizards, none were observed using rubber vine vegetation in riparian habitats, significantly less than expected, and only one lizard was observed in rubber vine vegetation in the woodland habitat. As rubber vine vegetation contains features that superficially resemble native habitat used by lizards, such as leaf litter, the avoidance of rubber vine by lizards suggests that rubber vine has underlying characteristics that create a suboptimal environment for lizards.  相似文献

It is widely assumed that in the late nineteenth century Lobesia botrana Den. and Schiff. shifted its food source from a wild shrub (Daphne gnidium L.) to vine (Vitis vinifera L.). We explored if host range expansion reflects an evolutionary host shift, whereby the new moth-host association was linked to adaptive changes. The reaction norms of larval survival, adult weight and development time were investigated in L. botrana under field conditions. Two moth strains were established from vine and daphne, and reciprocal infestations with neonate larvae were performed on both host plants over the three larval generations. All three traits showed phenotypic plasticity and genetic variation, variation for plasticity being only detected in larval survival. Comparisons between hosts within strains showed that (1) larval survival was higher on vine in 9 of 12 cases, (2) adult weight was lower on vine only in the first generation and (3) development time was shorter on vine in first generation, shorter on daphne in third generation and displayed a sex-related response in the second generation. Comparisons between strains within hosts evidenced moth-host adaptation as larval survival increased when strains developed on its original host. There was also evidence of moth-parasitoid coevolution because parasitism level was strain-dependent. We hypothesize that higher larval survival on vine, similar adult weight on both hosts in summer generations and lower predation risk in vineyards, might be among the fitness-related factors explaining evolutionary host shift to and worldwide adaptive success on vine of L. botrana.  相似文献

The case of industrial melanism in the peppered moth has been used as a teaching example of Darwinian natural selection in action for half a century. However, over the last decade, this case has come under attack from those who oppose Darwinian evolution. Here, the main elements of the case are outlined and the reasons that the peppered moth case became the most cited example of Darwinian evolution in action are described. Four categories of criticism of the case are then evaluated. Criticisms of experimental work in the 1950s that centered on lack of knowledge of the behavior and ecology of the moth, poor experimental procedure, or artificiality in experiments have been addressed in subsequent work. Some criticisms of the work are shown to be the result of lack of understanding of evolutionary genetics and ecological entomology on the part of the critics. Accusations of data fudging and scientific fraud in the case are found to be vacuous. The conclusion from this analysis of criticisms of the case is that industrial melanism in the peppered moth is still one of the clearest and most easily understood examples of Darwinian evolution in action and that it should be taught as such in biology classes.  相似文献

Interactions, antagonistic or mutualistic, can exert selection on plant traits. We explored the role of Hadena bicruris, a pollinating seed predator, as a selective agent on its host, the dioecious plant Silene latifolia. We exposed females from artificial-selection lines (many, small flowers (SF) vs. few, large flowers (LF)) to this moth. Infestation did not differ significantly between lines, but the odds of attacked fruits aborting were higher in SF females. We partitioned selection between that caused by moth attack and that resulting from all other factors. In both lines, selection via moth attack for fewer, smaller flowers contrasted with selection via other factors for more flowers. In LF females, selection via the two components was strongest and selection via moth attack also favoured increased fruit abortion. This suggests that the moths act as more of a selective force on flower size and number via their predating than their pollinating role.  相似文献

Abstract Aposematic colours may warn predators that an individual or species is chemically defended and unpalatable. This study examines a diurnal Australian whistling moth, Hecatesia exultans (Noctuidae, Agaristinae) where adults, although cryptic at rest, display their bright orange, yellow and black colouration in flight. Aposematically coloured larvae feed mainly on Cassytha, a parasitic vine that contains aporphine alkaloids. Alkaloids isolated from the plants and moths were analysed for the presence of these compounds. While alkaloids were found in the stomach and frass of 18 moth larvae, no alkaloids were present in the body and similarly no alkaloids were detected from 65 adult male moths collected from three widely separated populations. We conclude that the larvae and adults do not sequester alkaloids. Lycosid spiders and singing honeyeaters ( Lichenostomtus virescens ) were used to assess the palatability of H. exultans adults. The spiders and the birds consumed all adult moths. Adult moths appear to avoid predation by employing quick flights with rapid changes of direction and, while the adults are brightly coloured, they are not chemical defended.  相似文献

Periploca sepium Bunge (Chinese silk vine) is a woody climbing vine belonging to the family Asclepiadaceae. It originally comes from Northwest China. Periploca resembles the Para-rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis, regarding a similar body plan to produce a milky exudate containing rubber latex. The Periploca plant was assessed as a rubber-producing plant by rubber structure elucidation and its molecular weight distribution. A rubber fraction purified from the milky exudate was subjected to 1H NMR analysis, and a characteristic signal derived from cis-polyisoprene was observed. In addition, when the molecular weight distribution of rubber components in the exudate was measured (using size-exclusion chromatography), the number-average molecular weight (Mn), weight-average molecular weight (Mw), and polydispersity (Mw/Mn) were estimated to be Mn = 1.3 x 10(5), Mw = 4.1 x 10(5), and Mw/Mn = 3.1, respectively. Furthermore, the presence of polyisoprene, with Mn = 4.0 x 10(4), Mw = 7.6 x 10(4), and Mw/Mn = 2.5, was also confirmed in plantlets obtained from shoots as a result of tissue culture.  相似文献

The sex pheromone of the pear moth, Cydia pyrivora, is (E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-yl acetate. A 5%-addition of the geometric isomers E,Z and Z,Z decreased male attraction in the field, the Z,E isomer had no significant effect. Traps baited with 10 µg E,E on grey rubber septa were attractive throughout the flight period of C. pyrivora. These traps allow specific detection of pear moth, and they are not attractive to its sibling species, codling moth C. pomonella.  相似文献

The night sky is the venue of an ancient acoustic battle between echolocating bats and their insect prey. Many tiger moths (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) answer the attack calls of bats with a barrage of high frequency clicks. Some moth species use these clicks for acoustic aposematism and mimicry, and others for sonar jamming, however, most of the work on these defensive functions has been done on individual moth species. We here analyze the diversity of structure in tiger moth sounds from 26 spe-cies collected at three locations in North and South America. A principal components analysis of the anti-bat tiger moth sounds reveals that they vary markedly along three axes: (1) frequency, (2) duty cycle (sound production per unit time) and frequency modulation, and (3) modulation cycle (clicks produced during flexion and relaxation of the sound producing tymbal) structure. Tiger moth species appear to cluster into two distinct groups: one with low duty cycle and few clicks per modulation cycle that supports an acoustic aposematism function, and a second with high duty cycle and many clicks per modulation cycle that is con-sistent with a sonar jamming function. This is the first evidence from a community-level analysis to support multiple functions for tiger moth sounds. We also provide evidence supporting an evolutionary history for the development of these strategies. Further-more, cross-correlation and spectrogram correlation measurements failed to support a "phantom echo" mechanism underlying sonar jamming, and instead point towards echo interference.  相似文献

本文系统调查了云南主要植胶区开割胶园中豆科绿肥资源种类、地理分布、结瘤情况等,并对绿肥资源现状与结瘤特征进行了评价。研究结果表明,云南胶园现有耐荫豆科绿肥22属42种。绿肥虽然分布广泛,但植株个体数量少;生活型以草本、藤本、亚灌木为主;属中种类少;基本未被开发利用。所调查豆科绿肥结瘤率达88.2%,根瘤大且数量多,形状以球形、椭球形为主,颜色多为粉红、红色。  相似文献

We used flow cytometry and extensive geographic surveys of herbivore attack to test whether repeated evolution of autotetraploidy in the perennial herb Heuchera grossulariifolia Rydb. (Saxifragaceae) has created evolutionary barriers to attack by the specialist moth herbivore Greya politella (Prodoxidae). We found that the moth has colonized tetraploid as well as diploid populations, has colonized tetraploids of separate evolutionary origin, and, at least under some conditions, is more likely to attack tetraploids than diploids. Plant polyploidy therefore provides a potential route out of specialization as an evolutionary dead end in phytophagous insect taxa as well as a potentially important route to subsequent phylogenetic and geographic diversification of plant/insect interactions.  相似文献

In north‐eastern Italy during 1994–2006, studies were carried out on the susceptibility of grapevine cultivars to the first generations of the European vine moth [Lobesia botrana (Den. and Shiff.); Lep., Tortricidae] and the European grape berry moth [Eupoecilia ambiguella (Hb.); Lep., Cochylidae]. In five different years, the larval population density of both moth species and the larval age composition of L. botrana were recorded on 11 grapevine cultivars (Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Merlot, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Terrano, Tocai Friulano, Verduzzo Friulano), grown in the same vineyard. The influence of inflorescence traits on these demographic parameters was also evaluated. On a 5‐year average, L. botrana significantly prevailed over E. ambiguella in nine of the 11 cultivars. Chardonnay and Pinot Gris were the most infested cultivars. Age composition of L. botrana larvae varied with cultivar type, being older on Chardonnay and Tocai Friulano than the other cultivars. Inflorescence earliness and hairiness explained the majority of the variability in cultivar susceptibility. In particular, the larval population level of the two vine moths was positively correlated with inflorescence earliness and negatively correlated with inflorescence hairiness. Lobesia botrana larval age composition was negatively correlated with inflorescence hairiness. Inflorescence earliness and hairiness could be used to predict in each grape‐growing area which cultivars are potentially more infested in the first generation. Inflorescences without pubescence, favouring an older age composition of first generation larvae, could induce an earlier second generation.  相似文献

  • 1 Climate change is promoting alterations of a very diverse nature in the life cycle of an array of insect species, including changes in phenology and voltinism. In Spain, there is observational evidence that the moth Lobesia botrana Den. & Schiff. (Lep.: Tortricidae), a key vine pest that is usually trivoltine in Mediterranean latitudes, tends to advance spring emergence, displaying a partial fourth additional flight, a fact that is potentially attributable to global warming.
  • 2 To verify this hypothesis, local temperatures were correlated with L. botrana phenology in six vine‐growing areas of southwestern Spain during the last two decades (1984–2006) by exploiting the database of flight curves obtained with sexual pheromone traps. The dates of second and third flight peaks of the moth were calculated for each area and year and then correlated with both time (years) and local temperatures.
  • 3 The results obtained demonstrated a noteworthy trend towards local warming (as a result of global warming) in the last two decades, with mean increases in annual and spring temperatures of 0.9 and 3.0°C, respectively. Therefore, L. botrana phenology has significantly advanced by more than 12 days. Moreover, the phenological advance contributed to increased moth voltinism in 2006 by promoting a complete fourth additional flight, a fact that has never been reported previously to our knowledge in the Iberian Peninsula.

Warning (aposematic) and cryptic colorations appear to be mutually incompatible because the primary function of the former is to increase detectability, whereas the function of the latter is to decrease it. Disruptive coloration is a type of crypsis in which the color pattern breaks up the outline of the prey, thus hindering its detection. This delusion can work even when the prey's pattern elements are highly contrasting; thus, it is possible for an animal's coloration to combine both warning and disruptive functions. The coloration of the wood tiger moth (Parasemia plantaginis) is such that the moth is conspicuous when it rests on vegetation, but when it feigns death and drops to the grass‐ and litter‐covered ground, it is hard to detect. This death‐feigning behavior therefore immediately switches the function of its coloration from signaling to camouflage. We experimentally tested whether the forewing patterning of wood tiger moths could function as disruptive coloration against certain backgrounds. Using actual forewing patterns of wood tiger moths, we crafted artificial paper moths and placed them on a background image resembling a natural litter and grass background. We manipulated the disruptiveness of the wing pattern so that all (marginal pattern) or none (nonmarginal pattern) of the markings extended to the edge of the wing. Paper moths, each with a hidden palatable food item, were offered to great tits (Parus major) in a large aviary where the birds could search for and attack the “moths” according to their detectability. The results showed that prey items with the disruptive marginal pattern were attacked less often than prey without it. However, the disruptive function was apparent only when the prey was brighter than the background. These results suggest that warning coloration and disruptive coloration can work in concert and that the moth, by feigning death, can switch the function of its coloration from warning to disruptive.  相似文献

Abstract. The cactus moth, Cactoblastis cactorum (Berg) (Phycitidae) is native to South America. It was released as a biological control agent against alien Opuntia- cacti in Australia in the 1920s, then in southern Africa, and latterly on several islands, including those in the Caribbean. In 1989, the cactus moth was discovered in Florida, in the United States of America, where it is now threatening the survival of indigenous Opuntia species. In this paper we identify some of the attributes that have contributed to the success of C. cactorum as a weed biological control agent. Many of these same qualities account for the problems that C. cactorum has caused in Florida and predispose it as a major threat to the speciose, native Opuntia- floras of Central and North America. An estimated 79 platyopuntia (prickly pear) species are at risk: 51 species endemic to Mexico; nine species endemic to the United States; and 19 species common to both countries. Many cultivated and wild Opuntia species, that are used in various ways, are also vulnerable to attack by C. cactorum , including at least 25 species in Mexico and three species in the United States, particularly the widely exploited and culturally important cultivars of O. ficus-indica . Some control strategies are suggested that may minimize the risk and consequences of invasion by the cactus moth. The wider implications of this threat to the practice of weed biological control and to conservation are discussed.  相似文献

In the present paper the karyotypes of Keteleeria calcarea Cheng et L. K. Fu and K. oblonga Cheng et L. K. Fu are reported, and they are compared with those of K. cyclolepis Flous and K. formosana Mast. The karyotype formula of K. calcarea Cheng et L. K. Fu is K(2n)=24=16m+8sm, and K. oblonga Cheng et L. K. Fu is K(2n)=24=18m+6sm. They both belong to “2A” type of karyotype symmetry. There are secondary constrictions on the short arms of 1th, 3th, 6th chromosome pairs in K. calcarea Cheng et L. K. Fu and 2th, 4th, 6th in K. oblonga Cheng et L. K. Fu. K. oblonga Cheng et L. K. Fu is more advanced than K. cyclolepis Flous, but more primitive than K. calcarea Cheng et L. K. Fu, and K. formosana Mast is the most advanced among the four species in karyotype.  相似文献

Effects of a gypsy moth attack on the productivity of Larix sibirica on tree-ring width were analyzed in a case study of a mountain site in the western Khentey in the northern Mongolian forest-steppe ecotone. A major aim of the study was to assess whether reduced productivity by gypsy moth herbivory could contribute to fluctuations of the forest edge to the steppe in larch-dominated woodlands. In the year of the infestation, larch trees at the forest edge lost 90% of their needles and latewood formation was strongly reduced. However, earlywood formation was widely completed before the gypsy moth attack and, therefore, total tree-ring width was not below the average of the five years prior to infestation. In the two years following the gypsy moth invasion, annual stem increment was strongly reduced. Trees growing 30–100 m inside the forest showed a much weaker response of tree-ring widths to the gypsy moth infestation consistent with significantly higher defoliation at forest edge than in the forest interior. Old trees exhibited a stronger growth decline than middle-aged trees, indicating higher infestation of dominant, exposed trees, which are thought to be better accessible to the wind-dispersed gypsy moth larvae hatching in the early growing season on the steppe. Under the current climate, occasional growth reductions are thought to be of little effect on the performance of L. sibirica, as fast-growing competitors of other tree species, which are not or hardly affected by gypsy moth, are absent.  相似文献

The leaf miner Cameraria ohridella causes premature defoliation of Aesculus hippocastanum trees. In order to assess the whole-plant loss of productivity caused by the parasite, we monitored seasonal changes of leaf gas exchange and leaf area losses in horse chestnut trees freely infested or chemically treated to prevent moth infestation (controls). Data were integrated in a model and the annual loss of net primary productivity (NPP) was calculated for infested trees with respect to controls. Measurements showed marked vertical stratification of C. ohridella attacks, with lower crown strata being more infested than higher ones. Leaf gas exchange was maximum between May and early June, but it strongly decreased starting from mid-June even in controls. Model calculations showed that NPP loss of infested trees was about 30% on an annual basis (when the first moth attack is recorded at the end of April). Model simulations showed that postponing the start day of attack would have important positive effects on plants NPP. For example, if the start day of attack was postponed to 20 May, the annual loss of NPP would be about 15%. Our study suggests that A. hippocastanum trees attacked by C. ohridella are not facing serious risks of decline, especially if methods are adopted to postpone the start day of attack (e.g. removal of fallen leaves in autumn). Our data do not support the view that plants need to be totally protected from the parasite by application of insecticides.  相似文献
