A basic paradigm in behavioral ecology is that organisms expand their distribution as preferred sites become saturated with individuals that reduce the availability of resources (e.g., shelter, prey) on a per capita basis. Previous fish community studies at Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary have shown that juvenile Acadian redfish Sebastes fasciatus (<20cm total length; TL) were primarily associated with boulder reefs that have deep interstices amongst the boulders; and that redfish expanded their distribution to adjacent gravel habitats when local abundance on reefs was high. Multibeam and sidescan sonar surveys in Stellwagen Basin (primarily a cohesive mud seafloor) have shown that discrete small areas of the basin floor are composed of mud draped gravel and partially buried boulders. Linear video transects using remotely operated vehicles and a video/photographic equipped grab sampler across five of these sites in 1997 showed that exposed boulders do not have crevices along their lower margins and are surrounded by dense patches of cerianthid anemones, Cerianthus borealis. These anemone patches are not present on the surrounding mud seafloor. Video image data showed that late juvenile redfish (11–20cm TL) occurred on boulder reefs as well as in the dense cerianthid patches but not on unstructured mud habitat (without cerianthid anemones). Comparisons of boulder reef and cerianthid habitats in 1998 showed that early demersal phase (0-year) redfish (0–10cm TL) occurred only on reefs but late juveniles occurred both on the reefs and in dense cerianthid habitats. Adult size classes (>20cm TL) also occurred in dense cerianthid habitats. Two explanations for these distributions can be advanced. The simplest is that redfish use both boulder and cerianthid habitats on an encounter basis, regardless of habitat saturation or predation pressure. Alternatively, boulder reefs serve as recruitment habitats and cerianthid habitats serve as a conduit for redfish moving away from saturated boulder reef sites, essentially serving as elements of a 'redfish pump'.  相似文献

We intensively sampled fish in rivers and streams within a single major drainage basin (the Blackwater River) and across major drainages in British Columbia to assess the factors influencing distribution of chiselmouth, Acrocheilus alutaceus, and to develop models for predicting chislemouth presence. Chiselmouth were typically absent from sites with maximum temperatures below 20°C or 2100 annual degree days, both within a single drainage and between larger drainages. Indices of stream size (bankfull channel width and basin area) were the most significant predictors of chiselmouth presence within the Blackwater drainage (p=0.016 and p=0.032, respectively), and inclusion of thermal variables only marginally increased classification success. In contrast, bankfull channel width and basin area were poor predictors of chiselmouth presence in mainstem habitat within larger drainage basins throughout British Columbia. Inclusion of thermal variables (particularly degree days > 12°C) doubled correct classification rates of chiselmouth presence across larger drainage basins. These habitat associations suggest that water temperature is the primary constraint on presence of chiselmouth populations in larger drainages across a landscape, while selection of different habitat types (mainstem habitat over smaller tributaries) determines distribution within any given basin.  相似文献

Home range area and habitat use of the wild Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) were investigated between elevations of 600m and 3000m in the Northern Japan Alps, in areas where there is great variation in vegetation type. A total of 22 troops were located either visually or by radiotracking from December 1996 to February 2000. The average troop size was 48.4 individuals, the average ranging area (65% probability distribution calculated using the adaptive kernel method) was 3.7km2 and the average elevation of each troop varied from 740m to 1458m. Two troop types were distinguished according to their habitat use: (i) rural type groups frequently utilized cultivated land (n=12); and (ii) natural type groups never utilized cultivated land (n=10). Natural groups inhabited higher elevation areas and showed a greater dependency on deciduous broad-leaved forests during all seasons. In contrast, rural groups utilized the larch plantation more in spring, and the red pine forest in summer. Rural groups were observed on cultivated lands more often from summer to winter than in spring. The size of the rural groups was twice as large as that of the natural groups. Troop size and home range area showed significant correlation within each group type. The per capita home range area of rural groups was smaller than that of natural groups. These results suggest that per capita home range area is negatively correlated with habitat quality.  相似文献

East African and south African churchills (Petrocephalus, Mormyridae) were synonymised in 1959 to become members of a single species of subcontinental, southern African distribution, Petrocephalus catostoma (Günther, 1866). By comparison with the type material for P. catostoma from the Ruvuma River and P. stuhlmanni from the Ruvu River, both of East African origin, we confirm the South African form of churchill to represent a new species, P. wesselsi, ranging from the northern Limpopo and Incomati systems south to the Pongola River (Natal) as its southern limit. We also compared churchills from the Sabie River (25° S, South Africa, Incomati system) with churchills from the Upper Zambezi River (17° S, Namibia), using electric organ discharges (EODs) and morphology. The duration of an EOD pulse of the South African form (N = 39; 943.2±S.E. 18.82µs) is, on average, more than twice that of the Upper Zambezi form (N = 37; 436.6±15.1µs), and the amplitude of the second head-positive phase (P2 phase relative to P1 = 1) significantly weaker (0.133 ± 0.0005 vs. 0.472 ± 0.002 for Upper Zambezi males, 0.363 ± 0.03 for Upper Zambezi females). In contrast to the Upper Zambezi form, the EOD of the South African form exhibits no difference between the sexes. Fish from the two origins differ significantly in 11 out of 14 anatomical characters studied, confirming molecular genetic differentiation on the species level.  相似文献

The decline of the endangered Mary River cod, Maccullochella peelii mariensis, of Queensland, Australia, has been attributed to anthropomorphic habitat alterations, however, the relationships between this subspecies and its physical environment are poorly understood. We used radiotelemetry to investigate the movements and use of habitats by nine Mary River cod (total length 420–760mm; weight 1.3–5.5kg) in the Mary River system over a 20 month period. The mean distance moved each month was positively correlated with monthly stream discharge, but the direction of movements was unpredictable. Patterns of movement varied considerably among individuals and appeared to be unrelated to size. Cod established home ranges of between 70 and 820m in length. Five of the tagged cod returned to a previous home range after moving more than 10km, whereas three did not move more than 2km from their capture location for the duration of the study. Cod used large woody debris complexes more than any other type of habitat, and rarely used areas of open water. Managers should give high priority to maintenance of fish passage and protection/rehabilitation of large woody debris habitats if cod populations are to recover.  相似文献

American ginseng, Panax quinquefolius L., is one of the most heavily traded medicinal plants in North America. The effect of harvest on genetic diversity in ginseng was measured with a single generation culling simulation program. Culling scenarios included random harvest at varying levels, legal limit random harvest and legal limit mature plant harvest. The legal limit was determined by the proportion of legally harvestable plants per population (% mature plants per population). Random harvest at varying levels resulted in significant loss of genetic diversity, especially allelic richness. Relative to initial levels, average within-population genetic diversity (H e) was significantly lower when plants were culled randomly at the legal limit (Mann–Whitney U=430, p<0.001) or when only mature plants were culled (Mann–Whitney U=394, p<0.01). Within-population genetic diversity was significantly higher with legal limit mature plant harvest (H e=0.068) than when plants were culled randomly at the legal limit (H e=0.064; U=202, p<0.01). Based on these simulations of harvest over one generation, we recommend that harvesting fewer than the proportion of mature plants could reduce the negative genetic effects of harvest on ginseng populations.  相似文献

We developed an individual based model that investigates the importance of suboptimal habitats for the survival of the grey bush cricket Platycleis albopunctata living in a core habitat. Our model consists of two submodels. The first describes the demographic growth of the cricket known to mainly depend on temperature. The second introduces a simple heterogeneous habitat that consists of two areas of variable size and different suitability for reproduction. An optimal habitat is surrounded by a suboptimal habitat and both together are located within an unsuitable area. Applying Monte Carlo simulations we demonstrate that the extinction probability of a bush cricket population is significantly lower in an optimal habitat with a surrounding suboptimal habitat than without. Even small suboptimal habitats are sufficient to significantly reduce the extinction risk of the core population. For a bush cricket population living in a heterogeneous habitat mean minimum viable population estimates range from 13000 to 15000 adults, whereas 30000 adults are required for a population living in an optimal habitat without a surrounding suboptimal habitat. Thus, the presence of a suboptimal habitat can reduce minimum viable population by 50%. For any species, our model predicts that the type of dispersal between optimal and suboptimal habitat and the type of habitat selection determine whether suboptimal habitat is useful or detrimental for species persistence.  相似文献

We conducted a series of experiments to determine the movements and fidelity of juvenile pinfish, Lagodon rhomboides, in salt marsh creeks within North Inlet Estuary, SC. In Experiment 1, we investigated the fidelity of pinfish (40–100mm SL) at four subtidal locations (9–617m apart) along the axis of a major creek. We trapped and marked 2,297 individuals and recaptured 15–22% of the fishes released at each site, almost all of which (99.7%) had been marked at the same location of recapture up to 3 months earlier. In Experiment 2, we investigated pinfish movements between subtidal and intertidal areas. In the 8 weeks prior to sampling 2 intertidal creeks, we marked 950 juveniles in the adjacent subtidal areas. Sampling of the 2 flooded intertidal creeks showed that 9–20% of the pinfish collected bore marks, and all had been previously marked at the subtidal site immediately adjacent to the intertidal creek. Gut analysis of 60 individuals revealed that juveniles collected from the intertidal areas at high tide had consumed about ten times more food than those collected at the subtidal sites at low tide. In Experiment 3, we determined the fidelity of recently settled pinfish (<35mm SL) and showed that 15% of the 434 marked pinfish remained in the same area; some were at liberty up to 7 weeks. In Experiment 4, we determined home range by tagging and recapturing juvenile pinfish at sites separated by 20m along a 200m subtidal transect. We estimated that during periods when the intertidal zone was not accessible, the average home range was 9.4m with only 10% of tagged fish moving greater than 20m during the 4 month study. Our results indicate that soon after recruitment to the estuary, pinfish establish strong fidelity for sites within salt marsh creeks and exhibit tidal periodicity in both movements and feeding.  相似文献

Interspecific competition for spawning sites between two gobiid fishes, Bathygobius fuscus and Eviota abax, was studied on a rocky shore. Large males (LM: 55–80mm in standard length: SL) and small males (SM: 34–52mm SL) of B. fuscus acted as nest holders and sneakers, respectively, in the early spawning season (July). The sympatric male E. abax (22–33mm SL) was smaller than SM B. fuscus, and synchronically used rocky holes much smaller than those of LM B. fuscus. In this season, aggressions between the two species were rarely observed. In late season (August), as the number of the LM decreased, the SM converted their tactics to nest holding, occupying nests of a sizes similar to those of E. abax. Eviota abax males were dispossessed by SM and shifted their nest sites to cavities between cobbles and sandy bottom, which might be poorer nest sites than rocky holes.  相似文献

Larvae of the southeastern Australian endemic hypsigenyin labrid Achoerodus viridis are described and illustrated from 30 specimens (3.0–9.6mm) captured in plankton nets and larval fish beach seines. Development is typical for labrids. Larvae of A. viridis can be distinguished from those of other labrids because they possess distinctive pigment, 28 myomeres, and fin ray counts of D XI,11, A III,11, and P1 16–18. Larvae of closely related hypsigenyin labrid genera are poorly known but are similar in morphology and pigmentation. Adult A. viridis live on coastal rocky reefs. Larvae of 3.0–8.2mm were captured over the continental shelf off central New South Wales in the Western Tasman Sea. Larvae of 6.6–7.7mm were captured in a tidal channel leading to an estuarine lagoon, and the smallest larvae captured in seagrass beds in the lagoon were 7.2 and 8.5mm.  相似文献

Life-history characteristics of the double-ended pipefish, Syngnathoides biaculeatus (Bloch), were investigated to determine growth rate, degree of sexual dimorphism, size at maturity, and reproductive biology. Growth rates of wild juveniles and adults calculated from monthly progression of length-frequency modes ranged from 0.8mmd–1 (fish lengths 120–145mm standard length (SL)) in summer to 0.2mmd–1 in winter (185–200mm SL). Growth of laboratory-reared juveniles up to 63d old was greater, ranging from 0.8 to 2.3mmd-1. The von Bertalanffy growth constant K was estimated at 0.0076d- 1, or 2.8year–1. Morphological differentiation between the sexes based upon abdominal pattern was possible for fish larger than 120mm SL, with females possessing a zigzag pattern on the abdomen. The association between this pattern and sex was confirmed by histological gonad analysis. Males were significantly longer than females during four of seven seasons examined, and a 1:1 sex ratio was determined for all seasons except autumn when the ratio was female biased. The breeding season was marked by the appearance of pregnant males between October and April, and during courtship both species exhibited increased pigmentation. The minimum paternal size at maturity was 185mm, the maximum length recorded 260mm. Clutch size ranged between 60 and 200 eggs, with a mean of 153. Ovaries had a sequential pattern of egg development, resulting in egg batches that approximated the number of eggs carried by brooding males. Additionally, all eggs in a brood were at the same developmental stage. This suggests that one female provides all of the eggs for one male per breeding event in a monogamous mating system.  相似文献

In bitterlings (Acheilognathinae) C- and Ag-banding karyotypes of 6 species-subspecies collected in China and South Korea were analyzed. The chromosomal constitution of 2n=46 (4SM+42ST) in Rhodeus atremius fangi was quite different from that of 2n=48 (8M+20SM+20ST) in other species-subspecies in Rhodeus. It was concluded from the analysis of banded chromosomes that the increase in number of ST during the karyotype change from 2n=48 to 2n=46 was achieved by a series of pericentric inversions from 24 M-SM to 24 ST, and the decrease in the diploid number was caused by an additional tandem fusion of 4 ST chromosomes, forming a new ST pair in the 2n=46 karyotype. The karyotype of Tanakia koreensis, T. signifer, and Acheilognathus macropterus is 2n=48 (8M+20SM+20ST), 2n=48 (8M+20SM+14–16ST+4–6 A), 2n=44 (14M+16SM+14ST), respectively. In R. ocellatus ocellatus, T. koreensis, T. signifer and A. macropterus, karyotype changes from 2n=48 to 2n=44 due to centric fusion and inversion have also been estimated. It was suggested that C-banding heterochromatin was greatly concerned with the karyotype evolution in bitterlings.  相似文献

The large Asian gastropod mollusc Rapana venosa Valenciennes 1846 (Neogastropoda, formerly Muricidae, currently Thaididae) is reported for eastern North America in the lower Chesapeake Bay and James River, Virginia, USA. This record represents a transoceanic range expansion for this carnivorous species. This species has previously been introduced to the Black Sea, Adriatic Sea, and Aegean Sea. Ballast water transport of larval stages from the eastern Mediterranean or Black Sea is the suspected vector of introduction into the Chesapeake Bay; 650 adult specimens in the size range 68–165mm shell length (SL) have been collected from hard sand bottom in depths ranging from 5 to 20m at salinities of 18–28ppt. The absence of small individuals from local collections is probably related to bias in collection methods. Age of the specimens could not be determined. R. venosa is probably capable of reproducing in the Chesapeake Bay. Egg cases of R. venosa were collected from Hampton Roads, a section of the James River, in August 1998, and hatched over a 21-day period under laboratory conditions to release viable bilobed veliger larvae. Four lobed larvae developed 4 days post-hatching and apparent morphological metamorphic competency was observed 14–17 days post-hatching. Despite the provision of live substrates and/or metamorphic inducers no metamorphosis to a crawling form was observed for larvae cultured on the monospecific diet. In work performed during 1999 settlement was observed for larvae cultured on a diet of mixed flagellates and diatoms and subsequently exposed to local epifaunal species. Salinity tolerance tests were performed on larvae at 1–6 days post-hatching. No deleterious effects were observed at salinities as low as 10ppt with limited survival to 7ppt at 6 days post-hatch. Current distribution is considered in context with larval salinity tolerance tests and literature describing native Asian and introduced populations to assess potential for establishment and further range extension both within the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic coast of North America. Establishment within the Bay mainstem to the Rappahannock River with minor incursions into the mouths of the southerly subestuaries is considered feasible. A projected breeding range on the Atlantic seaboard extending from Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras is considered as tenable. Potential impact of R. venosa on commercially valuable shellfish stocks throughout the projected range is cause for serious concern. Boring by the polychaete Polydora websteri is more prevalent in the younger whorls of the shell, and absent in shell laid down later in life. This pattern suggests that juvenile animals may prefer hard substrates and not adopt an infaunal lifestyle until a size in excess of 50mmSL, or after reaching maturity.  相似文献

During the spring and summer months of 1995, 1996 and 1997, gillnet and longline surveys were conducted in conjunction with tag and recapture experiments to outline spatial and seasonal distribution of young sandbar sharks, Carcharhinus plumbeus, in Delaware Bay for essential fish habitat mapping, to assess abundance of young sandbar sharks, and to quantify growth during the summer nursery season. Sandbar sharks (n = 943) ranging from 40 to 120cm fork length (48 to 130cm total length) were captured; yearly totals were 199, 314 and 430 in 1995, 1996 and 1997, respectively. Individuals were captured between June and October in water temperatures ranging from 15.4° to 28.5°C and salinities ranging from 22.8 to 30.3 ppt. Presence of neonates and catch per unit effort data indicate that pupping begins in late June near the southwestern coast of the Bay. Juveniles were present from early June through September and their spatial distribution in the Bay appeared uniform. Of 782 sandbar sharks tagged and released during the three years, 50 were recaptured. Mean distance from tag to recapture location and mean days-at-liberty of sandbar sharks recaptured in Delaware Bay during the year of tagging were 10km and 18 days, respectively. Some sharks were recaptured as far as 957km from the release location. Length distributions show young-of-the-year sandbar sharks grow about 2–3cm in length during the nursery season.  相似文献

We studied age, growth, and sexual development in the early life intervals of the self-fertilizing mangrove killi-fish, Rivulus marmoratus. Newly hatched (day 0) individuals had sagittal otoliths of 60m radius, with about 30 increments. Sequential sampling until about day 60 after hatching yielded otoliths with the number of increments outside the 60m radius equal to the daily age of the fish. Alizarin complexone marking of otoliths also confirmed the increments were daily, and demonstrated the applicability of this technique to field studies for capture-mark-recapture, or age and growth estimates. Individuals fed a restricted amount of food formed fewer daily otolith growth increments than fish fed to satiation each day. Using histological analysis for identifying gonad morphogenesis, we found no correlation between gonadal development and external appearance (caudal ocellus, orange fin colouration) in young fish of known ages. The caudal ocellus was not present until 9mm total length, and developed thereafter. Of 136 individuals examined, fish less than 17.2mm total length (TL, n = 124) were females. Testicular tissue first appeared among individuals 17–18mm TL (n = 3), while some individuals greater than 18mm TL (n = 8) were functional hermaphrodites. The single male in our study was relatively of small body size (9.6mm, day 37) with a distinct caudal ocellus, indicating that it is presumably a primary male.  相似文献

The increasing production of several plastics such as expanded polystyrene, widely used as packaging and building materials, has caused the release of considerable amounts of pentane employed as an expanding agent. Today many microorganisms are used to degrade hydrocarbons in order to minimize contamination caused by several industrial activities. The aim of our work was to identify a suitable microorganism to degrade pentane. We focused our attention on a strain of Arthrobacter sp. which in a shake-flask culture produced 95% degradation of a 10% mixture of pentane in a minimal medium after 42days of incubation at 20°C. Arthrobacter sp. cells were immobilized on a macroporous polystyrene particle matrix that provides a promising novel support for cell immobilization. The method involved culturing cells with the expanded polystyrene in shake-flasks, followed by in situ growth within the column. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed extensive growth of Arthrobacter sp. on the polymeric surface. The immobilized microorganism was able to actively degrade a 10% mixture of pentane, allowing us to obtain a bioconversion yield of 90% after 36h. Moreover, in repeated-batch operations, immobilized Arthrobacter sp. cells were able to maintain 85–95% pentane degradation during a 2month period. Our results suggest that this type of bioreactor could be used in pentane environmental decontamination.  相似文献

The effect of microrelief and vegetation on methane (CH4) emission was investigated in a wet polygonal tundra of the Lena Delta, Northern Siberia (72.37N, 126.47E). Total and plant-mediated CH4 fluxes were measured by closed-chamber techniques at two typical sites within a low-centred polygon. During the study period, total CH4 flux averaged 28.0±5.4mgm–2d–1 in the depressed polygon centre and only 4.3±0.8mgm–2d–1 at the elevated polygon rim. This substantial small-scale spatial variability of CH4 emission was caused by strong differences of hydrologic conditions within the microrelief of the polygon, which affected aeration status and organic matter content of the soils as well as the vegetation cover. Beside water table position, the vegetation cover was a major factor controlling CH4 emission from polygonal tundra. It was shown that the dominant vascular plant of the study area, Carex aquatilis, possesses large aerenchyma, which serve as pathways for substantial plant-mediated CH4 transport. The importance of plant-mediated CH4 flux was strongly influenced by the position of the water table relative to the main root horizon. Plant-mediated CH4 transport accounted for about two-thirds of the total flux in the wet polygon centre and for less than one-third of the total flux at the moist polygon rim. A clipping experiment and microscopic-anatomical studies suggested that plant-mediated CH4 transport via C. aquatilis plants is driven only by diffusion and is limited by the high diffusion resistance of the dense root exodermes.  相似文献

Behavioral and physiological responses to hypoxia were examined in three sympatric species of sharks: bonnethead shark Sphyrna tiburo, blacknose shark, Carcharhinus acronotus, and Florida smoothhound shark, Mustelus norrisi, using closed system respirometry. Sharks were exposed to normoxic and three levels of hypoxic conditions. Under normoxic conditions (5.5–6.4mg l–1), shark routine swimming speed averaged 25.5 and 31.0cm s–1 for obligate ram-ventilating S. tiburo and C. acronotus respectively, and 25.0cm s–1 for buccal-ventilating M. norrisi. Routine oxygen consumption averaged about 234.6 mg O2kg–1h–1 for S. tiburo, 437.2mg O2kg–1h–1 for C. acronotus, and 161.4mg O2 kg–1 h–1 for M. norrisi. For ram-ventilating sharks, mouth gape averaged 1.0cm whereas M. norrisi gillbeats averaged 56.0 beats min–1. Swimming speeds, mouth gape, and oxygen consumption rate of S. tiburo and C. acronotus increased to a maximum of 37–39cm s–1, 2.5–3.0cm and 496 and 599mg O2 kg–1 h–1 under hypoxic conditions (2.5–3.4mg l–1), respectively. M. norrisi decreased swimming speeds to 16cm s–1 and oxygen consumption rate remained similar. Results support the hypothesis that obligate ram-ventilating sharks respond to hypoxia by increasing swimming speed and mouth gape while buccal-ventilating smoothhound sharks reduce activity.  相似文献

Lake Puma Yumco is a typical alpine lake (altitude 5030m) located in the pre-Himalayas of Tibet, China, and this study was the first limnological investigation ever conducted on it. Lake Puma Yumco (28°34N, 90°24E) has the following morphometric properties: maximum length 31km, maximum width 14km, mean width 9km, shoreline 90km, surface area 280km2, and shoreline development 1.5. Transparency was approximately 10m, even in the thawing season. The extinction coefficient of the lake water was calculated as 0.15m–1. Annual maximum transparency was estimated from the depth of the Chara zone to be 30m. Dissolved oxygen was 7mg O2 l–1 and showed saturated values, and salinity was 360mgl–1. The chemical type of the lake water was Mg-Ca-HCO3-SO4, and it was slightly alkaline in character. Total nitrogenous nutrients (sum of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and urea nitrogen), phosphate, and silicate were extremely low at 1, 0.02, and 9µM, respectively. Dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations were 160, 11, and 0.08µM and the molar ratio was calculated as 2100:140:1. Chlorophyll a concentration was 0.2mgm–3. Phytoplankton and zooplankton were dominated by Aphanocapsa sp. and Diaptomidae. Both nitrogen and phosphorus appear to be the limiting parameters for phytoplankton growth. Organic carbon and nitrogen contents in lake sediments were low and the sediments contained a large amount of CaCO3. The grain size of sediment was that of silt-sand in most cases. The present results indicate that the pre-Himalayan alpine freshwater Lake Puma Yumco is an ultraoligotrophic lake.  相似文献

Euphorbia characias is a Mediterranean spurge with a diplochorous dispersal system: after a ballistic dispersal that scatters the seeds, some ant species find and retrieve the seeds to their nest (myrmecochorous dispersal). The seed dispersal curve generated by ants in an abandoned field was described and partitioned according to ant size and to the distance to nest entrance from where seeds fell after ballistic dispersal. Both variables (ant size, distance to nest) affected dispersal distance. The seed dispersal curve showed a peak at short distance (median=1m) and a tail extending to 9.4m. The peak and the tail are explained differently. Short distances are usually generated by small ants (Pheidole pallidula and Tapinoma nigerrimum; 0.56±0.41m [n=48]) both from the nearest or farther nest entrances. The tail of the curve is generated disproportionately by big ants (Aphaenogaster senilis and Messor barbarus; 2.09±1.71m [n=61]) from farther nests. Seeds have a much greater probability (P=0.734) of being transported to nests which are not the nearest. This effect is largely due to transportation by big ants.  相似文献
