Low seed ovule ratios have been observed in natural populations of Polygala vayredae Costa, a narrowly endemic species from the oriental pre-Pyrenees. To evaluate physical and nutritional constraints and pollen tube attrition in this endemic species, stigma and style anatomy, as well as pollen tube development along the pistil were investigated using light and fluorescence microscopy. The structural morphology of the stigmatic region was also examined with scanning electron microscopy. Pollen grains that reached the stigmatic papillae came into contact with a lipid-rich exudate and germinated easily. Although a large number of pollen grains reach the stigmatic papillae, few pollen tubes were able to grow into the style towards the ovary. The style was hollow, with the stylar channel beginning a few cells below the stigmatic papillae. Initially, the stylar channel area was small compared to other levels of the style, and was surrounded by lipid-rich, highly metabolic active cells. Furthermore, lipid-rich mucilage was detected inside the stylar channel. At subsequent style levels towards the ovary, no major reserves were detected histochemically. The reduced intercellular spaces below the stigmatic papillae and the reduced area of the stylar channel at its commencement are suggested to physically constrain the number of pollen tubes that can develop. In subsequent levels of the style, the stylar channel could physically support a larger number of pollen tubes, but the lack of nutritional reserves cannot be disregarded as a cause of pollen tube attrition. Finally, the number of pollen tubes entering the ovary was greater than the number of ovules, suggesting that interactions occurring at this level play a major role in the final reproductive outcome in this species.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The effect of pollination on flower life span has been widely studied, but so far little attention has been paid to the reproductive consequences of delayed pollination in plants with long floral life spans. In the present study, Polygala vayredae was used to answer the following questions. (1) How does male and female success affect the floral longevity of individual flowers? (2) How does delaying fertilization affect the female fitness of this species?

Methods

Floral longevity was studied after experimental pollinations involving male and/or female accomplishment, bagging and open pollination. The reproductive costs of a delay in the moment of fertilization were evaluated through fruit set, seed–ovule ratio and seed weight, after pollination of flowers that had been bagged for 2–18 d.

Key Results

Senescence of the flowers of P. vayredae was activated by pollen reception on the stigmatic papillae, while pollen removal had no effect on floral longevity. Nonetheless, a minimum longevity of 8 d was detected, even after successful pollination and pollen dissemination. This period may be involved with the enhancement of male accrual rates, as the female accomplishment is generally achieved after the first visit. Floral life span of open-pollinated flowers was variable and negatively correlated with pollinator visitation rates. Delayed pollination had a major impact on the reproductive success of the plant, with fruit set, seed–ovule ratio and seed weight being significantly diminished with the increase of flower age at the moment of fertilization.

Conclusions

A strong relationship between pollination and floral longevity was observed. Flowers revealed the ability to extend or reduce their longevity, within some limits, in response to the abundance of efficient pollinators (i.e. reproductive fulfilment rates). Furthermore, with scarce or unpredictable pollinators, a long floral life span could maintain the opportunity for fertilization but would also have reproductive costs on production of offspring. Reduced female fitness late in the flower''s life could shift the cost–benefit balance towards a shorter life span, partially counteracting the selection for longer floral life span potentially mediated by scarce pollination services.Key words: Delayed pollination, endemic species, flower longevity, life span, pollen limitation, pollination, pollinator scarcity, Polygala vayredae, Polygalaceae, reproductive consequences, secondary pollen presentation  相似文献

The variation of floral morphology and its effect on the flower visitors of Polygala vayredae Costa (Polygalaceae), a narrow endemic species from the Oriental pre-Pyrenees, were examined. First, to account for the main floral reward (i.e., nectar), the relationship between the dimensions of the nectar gland and nectar production was investigated. Second, floral traits variation was assessed within and between the three most representative populations of the species. Finally, the role of several floral traits in the female fitness was evaluated. Furthermore, as nectar robbing was highly frequent, preferences of robbers for specific floral traits and their impact on legitimate pollinations were also evaluated. The flowers of this species are characterized by significant variations in floral characteristics and nectar rewards. A significant and positive correlation between the nectar gland dimensions and nectar production per flower was observed, with the gland dimensions being a good measure to infer the rewards offered by the flowers of P. vayredae. In general, corolla traits were significant and positively correlated with each other. Nectar was revealed to be an important trait in flower–visitor interactions, with legitimate pollinations being primarily influenced by this floral reward. Negative correlations between robbing frequency and legitimate pollinations were observed in two of the studied populations, and positive correlations between flower size and robbing frequency were observed in one population. An indirect negative selection over phenotypic floral traits mediated by nectar robbers is proposed.  相似文献

Subdioecy is thought to occupy a transitional position in the gynodioecy–dioecy pathway, explaining one of the evolutionary routes from hermaphroditism to dioecy. Quantifying any female reproductive advantage of females versus hermaphrodites is fundamental to examining the spectrum between subdioecy and dioecy; however, this is challenging, as multiple interacting factors, such as pollen limitation and resource availability, affect plant reproduction. We compared the female reproductive success of females and hermaphrodites via a field experiment in which we hand‐pollinated individuals of the subdioecious shrub Eurya japonica of similar size growing under similar light conditions. Effects of pollen limitation and seed quality were also evaluated through comparing the results of hand‐ and natural‐pollination treatments and performing additional laboratory and greenhouse experiments. Overall, females had higher fruit set and produced heavier fruit and more seeds than hermaphrodites, and these results were more pronounced for hand‐pollinated than for natural‐pollinated plants of both sexes. We also found that seeds naturally produced by females had a higher mean germination rate. These results indicate that females had a pronounced advantage in female reproductive success under conditions of no pollen limitation. The sexual difference in the degree of pollen limitation suggests a pollinator‐mediated interaction, whereas the higher female reproductive success of females even under natural conditions implies that Ejaponica is a good model species for elucidating the later stages of the gynodioecy–dioecy pathway.  相似文献

Polygala vauthieri andP. monticola var.brizoides have secondary pollen presentation from a basket-like structure on the style apex. This basket is loaded after the first visit by a bee. Pollen reception, therefore, can precede the issue of pollen. A sticky stigma secretion glues the pollen from the basket under the head of the bee visitor in an exactly predetermined spot on the left side only. This position mostly forms a kind of safe spot, where the bee can not remove the pollen. The exact position on the bee's head is determined by the species specific distance between style tip and nectary in the visited flower. In this way the two sympatric species deposit the pollen 2 mm apart on the visitor and so can avoid hybridization pollination, while being visited by the same group of bees.  相似文献

Keel flowers of the Polygalaceae and Fabaceae: a functional comparison   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Although the superficial similarity between Polygalaceae and Fabaceae flowers is well known, a comparison between their recently more precisely defined 'keel flowers' reveals a wealth of functional congruences with regard to visual attraction, flower mechanics (interplay of fixed and mobile floral parts, presence of special contrivances such as tongue guide, foot handles, pollen cache, etc.), pollen presentation and nectar storage. Although keel flowers are principally addressed to bees, the increasingly pronounced fusion of floral parts gave rise to tubular flowers and has widened the spectrum of pollinators in the Polygalaceae. The intimate functional correspondence does not affect the assessment that the floral architecture (in terms of homologies) is quite different between the families. This is discussed with reference to the sistergroup relationship of the two families emanating from molecular systematics.  相似文献

Nouelia insignis Franch. (Asteraceae) is a short, narrow endemic and endangered tree, growing with a natural population in the dry and hot valley of the Jinsha River in the southwest area of China. In this work, flowering phenology (time and duration), floral biology, visit frequency and behavior of pollinators, and pollination characteristics were studied based on investigation in the field and analysis in the laboratory with the help of a stereomicroscope, and the relationship between seed setting rate and reproductive traits, as well as the relationship between flowering time and rainfall before flowering, was tested using the method of general linear regression model. The results showed that natural population of N. insignis exhibited high flowering synchrony with relatively stable flowering duration, and the flowering time fluctuated greatly depending on the rainfall 5 months before flowering. The pollination of N. insignis required pollinators, and insect activities played a very important role in the pollination process. However, lack of the pollinators was not a limitation for reproductive fitness in N. insignis, although the number of pollinators was small and the frequency of visits was low. In addition, no pollen limitation was found during pollination. The average seed setting rate of N. insignis in the natural condition was only 1.52%–3.73%, and it was generally affected by changes in flowering phenology between years and had a higher seed set in early flowering year. The annual variation of seed set might be related to the annual variations of stamen and pistil functions, such as changes of pollen viability and stigma receptivity, which were closely related to flowering time. The results of this study are of value for further conservation actions on natural population of this threatened endemic plant.  相似文献

Reproductive traits are crucial for the establishment and maintenance of populations in new areas, and therefore for the invasion process. This work aimed to study the reproductive biology of four aggressive invasive Australian Acacia spp. in Portugal. Fruit and seed set, seed weight and germinability, and seedling growth were assessed for self‐ and outcross treatments in invasive populations of A. dealbata, A. longifolia, A. melanoxylon and A. saligna. Acacia spp. showed different investments in the production of reproductive units and in natural reproductive success, with A. dealbata, the most aggressive species, having the highest investment and reproductive success. Acacia melanoxylon showed a different reproductive strategy, andromonoecy, contrasting with the other hermaphroditic species. Acacia spp. were shown to be predominantly self‐incompatible, but a low level of spontaneous selfing enabled the production of viable offspring. Acacia dealbata and A. longifolia suffered pollen limitation. Self‐progeny had lower viability than progeny from outcrossing for A. dealbata and A. melanoxylon. Acacia spp. did not show higher compatibility rates in comparison with the native area. They had low fruit set but, as a result of their massive flower production, their realized reproductive success was high and could have contributed to the invasion. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 174 , 574–588.  相似文献

The breeding system and flowering phenology of the narrow endemic Antirrhinum microphyllum (Scrophulariaceae) were studied in order to assess the main factors affecting female reproductive success and to identify existing or potential threats to the viability of its populations. Hand-pollination experiments showed that A. microphyllum is an allogamous self-incompatible species. In both populations studied, the flowering season was 4 mo long and mean flowering duration per plant was about 1 mo. Peak flower production took place between mid-April and mid-May and overlapped with the period of activity of the main pollinator, Rhodanthidium sticticum (Megachilidae). Estimated mean number of seeds produced per plant was 9391, showing that population viability is not presently limited by seed output. The study of the direct and indirect effects of plant size, phenological traits (first flowering date, flowering duration, and flowering synchrony), and distance to neighbor plants on reproductive success was performed using structural equation modeling (SEM). In both populations, number of flowers and plant size were the main factors that determined the total number of fruits produced by a plant. First flowering date and flowering synchrony also affected fruit production. Multisample comparison of path coefficients for the two populations rejected the possibility that reproductive patterns could be described by one single model.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of four Japanese Calystegia species (Convolvulaceae) was studied to examine the effects of clonality and population structure on reproductive success. Calystegia soldanella, C. hederacea, and C. japonica are self-incompatible, while C. sepium is self-compatible but needs pollinator services for self-pollination. The showy, bisexual flowers of Calystegia offer pollen and nectar that attract many kinds of insects such as bees and syrphid flies. Clones of C. soldanella often formed mats just above the high tide line on beaches and produced a great number of seeds. Calystegia hederacea and C. japonica were distributed as patches of separate clones and often failed to transfer pollen grains among clones. Fruit and seed sets in C. hederacea and C. japonica were not limited by pollinators but by the number of compatible pollen grains. Although C. sepium clones were also distributed in patches, high and stable fecundity was achieved by self-compatibility and pollinator attraction. We suggest that self-compatibility in C. sepium has evolved under fertilization limitation caused by geitonogamy or facilitated selfing.  相似文献

Low levels of genetic variability are common for a number of geographically restricted plants: these data are consistent with theoretical expectations that small populations should be genetically depauperate. However, in some species, high levels of variability have been found in rare species. Allium aaseae is a rare, narrow endemic in the foothills of the Boise Front of southwestern Idaho. Genetic variation in the rare endemic A. aaseae, and nearby populations of the more common species, A. simillimum, was examined with randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) data. Eight populations of A. aaseae and six populations of A. simillimum (three near the range of A. aaseae, and three distant populations) of 25 individuals each were examined for this analysis. Genetic diversity as determined with RAPD markers of both species examined in this study is largely found within and not among populations. Levels of genetic diversity are high, especially for a narrow endemic species such as A. aaseae. Proportion of RAPD loci polymorphic was high in both species, although slightly higher in the more common A. simillimum. Because these higher levels of genetic variability run counter to theory, alternative explanations beyond population size must be invoked to explain the levels of genetic diversity found in this study. Possible explanations are (1) A. aaseae is only recently derived from A. simillimum, (2) hybridization between A. aaseae and A. simillimum is occurring, (3) multiple origins of A. aaseae, (4) populations of A. simillimum included in the analysis are all A. aaseae, (5) A. aaseae and A. simillimum are conspecific, and (6) an artifact of RAPD data.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Eryngium alpinum (Apiaceae) is an endangered perennial, characteristic of the Alpine flora. Because the breeding system influences both demographic (reproductive success) and genetic (inbreeding depression, evolutionary potential) parameters that are crucial for population maintenance, the reproductive ecology of E. alpinum was investigated. Specifically, the aims of the study were (1) to determine the factors (resources and/or pollen) limiting plant fitness; and (2) to assess the potential for gene flow within a plant, within a patch of plants, and across a whole valley where the species is abundant. METHODS: Field experiments were performed at two sites in the Fournel valley, France, over three consecutive years. Studies included a phenological survey, observations of pollinators (visitation rates and flight distances), dispersal of a fluorescent powder used as a pollen analogue, the use of seed traps, determination of the pollen/ovule ratio, and an experiment to test whether seed production is limited by pollen and/or by resources. KEY RESULTS: E. alpinum is pollinated by generalist pollinators, visitation rates are very high and seed set is resource- rather than pollen-limited. The short flights of honeybees indicate a high potential for geitonogamy, and low pollen and seed dispersals suggest strong genetic structure over short distances. These results are interpreted in the light of previous molecular markers studies, which, in contrast, showed complete outcrossing and high genetic homogeneity. CONCLUSION:S. The study highlights the usefulness of adopting several complementary approaches to understanding the dynamic processes at work in natural populations, and the conservation implications for E. alpinum are emphasized. Although the studied populations do not seem threatened in the near future, long-term monitoring appears necessary to assess the impact of habitat fragmentation. Moreover, this study provides useful baseline data for future investigations in smaller and more isolated populations.  相似文献

Variation in the social environment produces selection on morphologicaland behavioral traits. It is less clear how the social environmentgenerates variation in demography through behavioral mechanisms.Theory suggests that one aspect of social environment, relativeabundance of heterospecifics, influences the intensity of reproductiveinterference and its demographic effects. These effects arecountered by species recognition and female preferences. Westudied the effects of social environment on reproductive successin replicated, mixed breeding populations of two ranid frogs,Rana latastei and Rana dalmatina, the former being of internationalconservation concern. We manipulated the social environmentof female R. latastei experimentally by varying the relativeabundance of potential conspecific and heterospecific sexualpartners. We measured amplexus frequency and recorded the reproductivesuccess of R. latastei females. When conspecific males wererelatively uncommon, (1) the absolute and relative frequenciesof conspecific amplexus decreased, indicating a breakdown ofsexual isolation, (2) oviposition was less frequent, and (3)the percentage of viable embryos in deposited clutches decreased.R. latastei females in an environment of low relative conspecificabundance (1:5, R. Latastei:R. dalmatina) demonstrated 6.8%the reproductive success of females in an environment exclusivelywith conspecifics. We present a model for the dependence ofconspecific amplexus on the social environment. We discuss severalmechanisms that may influence reproduction by R. latastei, andwe support conservation of the species' preferred habitat toreduce opportunities for reproductive interference that occurat shared breeding sites.

Plant reproductive output can be limited by a variety of factors, bothintrinsic and extrinsic. I investigated the reproductive biologies of twospecies of unbranched short-columnar cacti, Ferocactuscylindraceus and F. wislizeni. I recordedfemalereproductive output (flowers produced, fruit set, seeds per fruit and seedmass), plant size and growth, and used hand-pollination experiments todeterminebreeding systems and pollen limitation. In both species, the ability to selfvaried among individuals, but self-pollination resulted in very few seeds, suggesting strong inbreeding depression. Neither species was pollen-limited.Numbers of flowers produced increases with plant size for both species, andseeds per fruit may also be related to plant size, although the relationship isunclear. Seed mass is not correlated with plant size. Flower production wassimilar in both species, but F. cylindraceus producedfewerseeds per fruit than F. wislizeni, and its seeds weighedless. Fruit set by F. cylindraceus was heavily impacted bya florivorous lepidopteran. Fruit set was very high (94 to 96%) inF. wislizeni, suggesting that architectural constraints(e.g., meristem limitation) are more limiting than resource levels or the levelof pollinator services. In F. cylindraceus, numbers ofseeds per fruit was positively correlated with seed mass, whereas inF. wislizeni, the relationship was negative (tradeoff).Thegrowth rates of F. wislizeni are affected by rainfall theprevious season, and growth rates increase as the plant ages.Ferocactus cylindraceus and F.wislizeni are thought to be sister species, meaning that observeddifferences between them are more likely to be the result of recentevolutionaryprocesses in their lineages rather than differing phylogenetic histories.  相似文献

Knowledge of the reproductive biology of endemic plants improves our understanding of how mating system may be related to patterns of species abundance and provides a basis for the development of rational conservation programmes. In this paper we present natural population data on the floral biology and reproductive ecology of the endemic Mediterranean species Cyclamen balearicum Willk. This is a long-lived, diploid perennial herb which occurs in southern France in five fragmented and isolated regions and on the Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Cabrera and Draponera. Our observations indicate a particularly scarce pollinator activity (rare syrphid visits) and dispersal by ants over small distances. A controlled pollination experiment in a natural population showed that in southern France C. balearicum is fully self-compatible and that selfing is autonomous and probably delayed (i.e. following opportunities for outcrossing). The proximity of stigmas and anthers will favour autonomous selfing. The high pollen/ovule ratio indicates nevertheless that C. balearicum has a mixed mating system. Patterns of variation in stigma-anther separation and pollen production per flower suggest that not only has the current mating system of the species evolved from an outcrossing ancestor but that due to the fragmentation and isolation of populations greater levels of selfing have evolved in southern France (and to an intermediate degree on Ibiza and Menorca). On the island of Mallorca where larger continuous belts of C. balearicum habitat still exist the species has floral traits indicating a more outcrossed mating system. To our knowledge this is the first paper to document such trends in floral traits in the endemic component of the Mediterranean flora.  相似文献

Abstract

The deceptive breeding system in the Orchidaceae family has been studied for decades to disentangle how pollination service can occur. Moreover, the interference of introduced herbivores on population development has been reported to affect the reproductive output in different plant species, including orchids. In this study, the breeding system of the food-deceptive species Anacamptis longicornu has been assessed. The spatio-temporal variation in both male and female reproductive fitness and its relationship with plant features were also analyzed. The possible herbivory effects were investigated by an exclusion experiment using two types of cages. The results confirm that this species is pollinator dependent and mostly allogamous but is also self-compatible. This species showed high values of cumulative inbreeding depression index for fruit set and seed viability parameters and was highly pollen-limited. Male fitness was always higher than female fitness between years and locations, and both parameters showed spatio-temporal variation. The use of cages excluded herbivores but, eventually, also excluded pollinators, so that both male and female reproductive success parameters decreased significantly in the complete exclusion treatment. The strong dependence of the species’ fitness on pollinator-mediated pollen transfer must be considered for the long-term conservation of A. longicornu.  相似文献

Observations about the floral biology and the reproductive system of Macroptilium fraternum were made in two populations in Argentina, with different edaphic conditions, situated at the southern area of distribution of the species. The coexistence of two kind of flowers in the same plant was detected in both populations and in herbarium material from other localities: a) cleistogamous preanthesis flowers and b) pseudocleistogamous flowers. The cleistogamous preanthesis flowers possessed wings longer than 5 mm and were disposed in pubescent, erect, racemes exposed above the level of the foliage. The anthesis lasted approximately 5 hours on sunny days or 9 hours on rainy days, the right wing covered the left wing, the corolla acquired a bilabiate aspect, offering the left wing as landing platform; they produced a low quantity of nectar (0.18 +/- 0.13 microliter); they did not receive pollinator visits; approximately four hours after the beginning of the anthesis on sunny days the ovary started to grow; in the bud, the receptive stigma was covered with germinating pollen grains from the same floral unit. The pseudocleistogamous flowers possessed wings shorter than 5 mm that were disposed in brief, hirsute and prostrate racemes, non subterranean as in other Macroptilium species; the banner started to spread exposing partially the wings, the left wing limb surrounded the keel and never spread; the right wing started to spread and after 2 seconds refolded and began to wither, the ovary began to grow immediately; the flower did not offer a surface to allow visitors to settle; in the buds the stigma was receptive and found with pollen grains from the same floral unit emitting their tubes. The relative reproductive success was low (natural pollination = 8%; spontaneous self-pollination = 3%), probably due to the low pollen viability, the high percentage of seed abortion and the lack of pollinator's visits. The production of both flower types is not conditioned by edaphic factors, as they were found in plants belonging to different environments. Study of the progeny of both floral types in both populations has demonstrated that each one produces a similar amount of seeds contributing to the next generation with plants of similar characteristics (slow development, low resistance to infections and high mortality). The absence of pollinators in these flowers (in part because they preferred to visit flowers of other species with more reward and in part because of the fragmentation of the habitats), would be producing inbreeding depression in the studied populations; if the germplasm variability is not preserved, these populations situated at the Southern end of the distribution range of the species could become extinguished.  相似文献
