1. Disturbance is a strong driver of community assembly and fire has long been recognised as one of the main disturbances of terrestrial ecosystems. This study tested the resilience of dung beetles to fire events in campos rupestres, which is a tropical savanna ecosystem that evolved under a frequent fire regime, by assessing the resistance and recovery of their communities. 2. Dung beetles were sampled before and after a fire event and the effect of fire on dung beetle richness, abundance, mean community biomass and composition was tested. The effects of time since last fire and fire frequency on the community were also tested. 3. No effect of fire occurrence, time since last fire and fire frequency on any community variable was found. 4. Some non‐mutually exclusive mechanisms promoting the resistance and recovery of dung beetles in campos rupestres could be acting in synergy. One potential mechanism is the mismatched seasonality between fire events and dung beetle occurrence, as fires occur during the dry season and dung beetles are present above ground during the rainy season. Furthermore, dung beetles are insects that remain buried during most of their lifetime, which could protect individuals from being burned. Another potential mechanism is the replacement of species in burned areas by the movement of individuals from unburned areas, attracted by resources and/or by metacommunity dynamics. 5. It is concluded that in this ‘fire‐dependent’ ecosystem, dung beetle communities are resilient to fire and seem not to be structured by this disturbance.  相似文献

Although the high diversity of neotropical plants is often associated with rain forests, another important location is open vegetation at mountain tops. In the present study, we investigated the phytogeographic patterns of the Espinhaço Range, in eastern Brazil, a region characterized by campos rupestres and marked by high levels of plant richness and endemism. Based on the occurrence of Asclepiadoideae (Apocynaceae) in a grid of 0.5º × 0.5º cells, we conducted cluster analyses and parsimony analysis of endemicity (PAE). We also calculated indexes of diversity and endemism and examined the distribution of palaeo- and neo-endemics. According to our data, the topographic gap between the Espinhaço Range of Minas Gerais and Bahia seems to be an important constraint for the dispersion of endemics, and the floristic similarity between northern Minas Gerais and Bahia is a result of species with broad distribution. Based on the seven areas of endemism that emerged from PAE, we defined five principal centres of endemism in the Espinhaço Range, including the region comprising Serra do Cipó and the Diamantina Plateau, in Minas Gerais, as the major Asclepiadoideae cradle, and Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia, as an Asclepiadoideae museum.  相似文献

Brazilian ironstone outcrops (cangas) are nutrient‐poor stressful habitat dominated by slow‐growing woody species with high biodiversity and unique evolutionary history. Mining has produced great impacts on this ecosystem. Spontaneous regeneration of abandoned canga mined areas has not been observed. One of the active methods most widely used for ecological restoration in environments where soil has been lost or severely degraded is topsoil transposition due to the physical, chemical, and microbiological improvement of the substrate, in addition to the seed bank. Thus, plant succession was monitored for 40 months after topsoil transposition in a canga area degraded by aluminum mining, without any other type of management. A completely randomized design with 70 permanent plots (1 × 1 m) was used. Annual phytosociological surveys were carried out and floristic and vegetational spectra were constructed with the life‐forms proposed by Raunkiaer. Floristic composition was compared with a reference site. Overall, 105 species were identified. Both flora and vegetation changed over time, increasing resemblance to the reference areas. The floristic and vegetational spectra after 4 years of topsoil deposition are similar to pristine ones. The vegetation spectrum showed an increase in the dominance of phanerophytes and hemicryptophytes, while therophytes reduced their proportion. The early successional stage is dominated by weeds, like in other canga restoration studies, but did not impede the native species regeneration. Cangas's species recruited well from transposed topsoil. Unlike other studies with fertilized topsoil, our findings show the efficiency of topsoil transposition to provide initial conditions for the ecological restoration of this ecosystem.  相似文献

Over 70% of the total channel length in all river basins is formed by low order streams, many of which originate on mountaintops. Headwater streams play fundamental roles in processing and transporting terrestrial and aquatic organic matter, often harboring high biodiversity in bottom leaf patches deposited from riparian vegetation. The objective of this study was to assess the variation in taxonomic composition (measured by beta diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates) among stream sites located in the Espinhaço Meridional Mountain Range, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in eastern Brazil. We tested two hypotheses. (a) Taxa turnover is the main reason for differences in aquatic insect assemblages within stream sites; we predicted that turnover would be higher than nestedness in all stream sites. (b) Stream site altitude and catchment elevation range are the main explanatory variables for the differences in beta diversity; we predicted that local stream site variables would account for only minor amounts of variation. In both dry and wet seasons, we sampled twice in two habitat types (five leaf patches in pools and five in riffles) in each of nine stream sites distributed in three different river basins. We computed average pairwise beta diversity among sampling stations and seasons in each stream site by using Jaccard and Bray–Curtis indices, and calculated the percentages of diversity resulting from turnover and nestedness. Finally, we tested the degree that local‐ or catchment‐level predictor variables explained beta diversity. We found that turnover was the main component of beta diversity and that both dissolved oxygen and elevation range best explained Bray–Curtis beta diversity. These results reinforce the importance of leaf patches in montane (sky islands) Neotropical savanna streams as biodiversity hotbeds for macroinvertebrates, and that both local and landscape variables explained beta diversity.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) represents small, random variations in traits, presumably with bilateral symmetry, and is widely used as a tool to measure developmental instability in plants and animals. Because FA is a quick, simple and reliable measure, it has been frequently used for monitoring levels of environmental stress. This study investigated whether FA can be used as a predictor of individual developmental instability for four sympatric Melastomataceae species. To achieve that aim, 20 individuals of Trembleya laniflora, T. parviflora, Lavoisiera campos‐portoana and Tibouchina heteromalla were marked in southeastern Brazil and monitored before and during the flowering season. The FA index was calculated as the mean of the difference in the width or length between the left and right sides measured for each leaf or flower. All studied species exhibited asymmetry in the leaves and flowers, but the leaves of L. campos‐portoana and the petal width of T. heteromalla exhibited directional asymmetry, also an indicator of developmental instability. The highest level of leaf asymmetry was found in T. heteromalla and on flowers of L. campos‐portoana. None of the studied species exhibited a significant relationship between the FA level of the leaves and flowers on an individual basis, indicating that environmental and/or genetic sources of stress might act differently on different plant traits. For the studied species, measurements of FA can be suggested as useful tools to biomonitor levels of stress experienced by both leaves and flowers within the Melastomataceae family.  相似文献

Two new species of Microlicia (Melastomataceae) endemic to campos rupestres in Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais, Brazil, are described, illustrated and compared with their putative relatives. Microlicia rugosa sp. nov. is similar to M. minutiflora and M. martiana by having fastigiate branches, ascending, lanceolate or oblanceolate leaves with obtuse apex, attenuate base and entire margin, flower with short pedicels (1?2 mm long), magenta petals, and dimorphic stamens. Microlicia rugosa is further characterized by wrinkled surface of hypanthium and sepals, and both leaf surfaces with distinct depressions, which sometimes contain short‐stalked glandular trichomes. Microlicia viscida sp. nov. is similar to M. martiana, M. furnensis and M. rugosa mainly by having fastigiate branches, terete stems without leaves at the base and the bark gradually peeling to reveal the underlying brownish wood and leaves with similar size and shape. Microlicia viscida is characterized by a conspicuous secretion covering branches, leaves, hypanthium and sepals, giving a smooth and bright appearance. The leaf anatomy of both new species is briefly described. Microlicia rugosa and M. viscida are assessed as ‘Endangered’ and ‘Critically Endangered’ respectively, due to its limited extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, according to the IUCN categories and criteria.  相似文献

Summary Chamaecrista sect. Absus subsect. Baseophyllum (Leguminosae–Caesalpinioideae) includes eight species with geographic distribution concentrated in the Cadeia do Espinha?o mountain range of the States of Bahia and Minas Gerais, in eastern Brazil. During the taxonomic revision of this group, individuals were encountered with intermediate morphology between three sympatric species. Allozyme and multivariate morphometric analyses were carried out to investigate the occurrence of hybridization between these species in four populations and 14 suspected hybrid individuals between C. confertiformis and C. depauperata and between C. blanchetii and C. confertiformis. The results of both analyses support the occurrence of natural hybridization between them, and that all the individuals with intermediate morphology are probably F1 hybrids. The hybrids are formally described as C. × blanchetiformis and C. ×patyensis.  相似文献

The protection of areas that shelter high evolutionary diversity represented by geographically and phylogenetically isolated lineages is becoming an important conservation strategy. Nevertheless, the spatial distribution of this component of biodiversity is still unknown for most groups, which limits its application for selecting priority areas to conserve. In the present study, we reconstructed the phylogeny of Minaria (Apocynaceae) based on plastid (trnH-psbA, rps16, trnS-trnG and trnD-trnT) and nuclear (ITS and ETS) DNA markers and 34 morphological characters, and analysed the geographic distribution of the phylogenetic diversity (PD) and endemism (PE) in this genus. Minaria includes 21 species that are highly concentrated in the Espinhaço Range, in eastern Brazil, most of which (~75%) are narrowly distributed. The spatial analyses of PD and PE of Minaria indicate four evolutionary relevant areas in this region. The Serra do Cipó and the Diamantina Plateau contain 10 endemic species and present the highest levels of PD. However, the two other areas also deserve special attention. Rio de Contas has high levels of PE, because of two endemic sister species that represent a phylogenetically isolated lineage and the Southern Espinhaço Range houses the most critically endangered species of the genus. Most endemic species of Minaria occur in vegetation islands on rocky outcrops (campos rupestres). These low-fuel areas are less susceptible to fire, suggesting that the Espinhaço Range has served as a historical refuge for fire-sensitive lineages. Our results suggest that conservation units in the Espinhaço Range cover a great proportion of the evolutionary diversity of Minaria and that fire management is probably an important strategy to preserve this endemic biodiversity.  相似文献

We describe Cinclodes espinhacensis (Furnariidae), a new species discovered at high elevation in the southern portion of the Espinhaço Range, in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. This new taxon is closely related to the Long‐tailed Cinclodes Cinclodes pabsti, endemic to Serra Geral, southern Brazil. We present diagnostic morphological, genetic and vocal characters that support the rank of species for this allopatric taxon. It is readily distinguishable from C. pabsti by its much darker back, chest and flanks, lower body mass, shorter tarsus‐length, lower frequency of vocalizations, and longer duration of calls. DNA sequence data estimate that the divergence time between this new species and Cinclodes pabsti occurred c. 220 000 years ago, during the late Pleistocene. This discovery illustrates remarkable biogeographical connections among the cold regions of South America. The new species has a restricted range and we suggest it meets the criteria of the IUCN Red List category of Endangered.  相似文献

A new species of Euphorbia sect. Brasilienses V.W. Steinm. & Dorsey is described. Euphorbia tetrangularis Hurbath & Cordeiro is endemic to the Serra de Montevidéu, a part of the Espinhaço Range located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It differs from other species within the section based on the following characters: 4-ribbed branches, green cyathia, and green cyathial glands with erect appendages. This new species would qualify as critically endangered (CR) according to IUCN criteria. An inferred phylogeny based on a combined dataset of nuclear (ITS1) and plastid regions (psbA-trnH, trnC-ycf6, matK, atpI-atpH, psbJ-petA, trnQ-rps16?×?1) confirms the monophyly of Euphorbia sect. Brasilienses and supports the recognition of E. tetrangularis. The phylogeny also suggests that this group probably underwent a recent radiation.  相似文献

We have been sometimes forced to notice that there are forgotten rupestral arts: until recently, they were only studied by explorers or informed travellers and are rarely reported in the scientific literature. This is in part the case of engravings in the Moroccan High Atlas to which I have devoted my research (Ezziani, 2002, 2004a, 2004b). J Malhomme is among the people who were most invested in their investigation. He spent ten years in noting and collecting a considerable number of engravings: more than one thousand figures dispersed on the sides of the Atlas in places of difficult access at more than 2000 masl. He published many papers about his discoveries, which led to the publication of a remarkable corpus in two parts (Malhomme, 1959-1961). However, this corpus is far from being exhaustive. Recently, A. Rodrigue carried out new and excellent drawings within his research activity (1996). He added to the corpus of Malhomme a large number of figures discovered by A. Simoneau (1967, 1968, 1970), A. Jodin (1964, 1966) (two other researchers who have been closely interested in the High Atlas engravings) and himself, but unfortunately some engravings were damaged: whole flagstones have disappeared, so that the original drawings from Malhomme still remain very useful. All these data constituted the documentation base of my own work. In this paper, first I review some classification methods, then I propose my own and point out the inherent difficulties in this task. I conclude with a proposal for an outline of the structure of the High Atlas engravings.  相似文献

The morphological and leaf anatomical differentiation ofVellozia hirsuta is analysed and classified into several types (A1, A2, A4, B3, B5, C3). The species has a relatively wide distribution in the campos rupestres of Minas Gerais in Brazil. The variation of the isolated populations on different mountain ranges is complex, does not follow a clear geographical pattern, and defies taxonomic classification.  相似文献

The semiological study of a set of rock engravings such as the one in the Haut Atlas would consist in studying the graphic elements within their context to determine their mutual relations, because such relations are meaningful. Some details could be signs to which we could attach a conventional meaning. But, being unable to identify these conventional signs by their meaning, we must look for similarities between the figures themselves. Indeed, the repetition of some relations will provide constitutive elements of the global meaning. Unfortunately, ignoring the relative positions of the figures, I can only give some indications about what such a study should entail. So, I focus on one hand on the attributes of the figures, which are, in any case, identity marks, and on the other hand, on the context of the figures, that is the graphics around the figure, in order to outline the likely semantic field and the actions, actual or symbolic, in which they are involved.  相似文献

The introduction of plant species is a central topic in restoration ecology research. It is an effective technique to restore degraded ecosystems that present low resilience, such as the rupestrian grasslands. Once implemented, the transplantation of native species is monitored only in the short term, whereas long‐term monitoring should be preferred to identify potential changes in the restoration results. Our study is the first assessment of the transplantation success of 10 native shrub species in a degraded area of rupestrian grasslands, 8.5 years after transplantation. Survival, growth, and recruitment were assessed in 2004, 2008, and 2012. For all species, survival, growth, and recruitment varied over time. Although some species exhibited great mortality during the last 4 years, they also showed a great resprouting ability. Our results highlighted a trade‐off between survival and recruitment capacity. Most of the studied species showed remarkable ability to adapt to the extreme environment of the degraded area, persisting either through surviving or recruiting new individuals. We list nine native species, which are well appropriated for rupestrian grasslands restoration. In constrained environments, survival and resistance should represent criteria to select species for restoration project rather than fast growth and ground cover.  相似文献

Although germination sensu stricto and germination–dormancy balance are essential to each other, few reports demonstrate the effects of their relationship on patterns of seed–seedling transition. We studied this relationship by using diaspores of Paepalanthus chiquitensis, a threatened everlasting flowering species. We assessed three aspects: (a) water dynamics in germinating diaspores, (b) thermal stimulation (35, 40, 50, 60 and 70°C for 30 min) and (c) imbibition (4 hr) in growth stimulators (100, 200 or 300 mg · L−1 GA3; 0.1% KNO3). Our findings demonstrate that there are no barriers in the diaspore for diffusion. Additionally, there is high variability in diaspore permeability, and the germination of the species has two steps divided into five stages. These stages were defined by inflections on velocity in water dynamics, which ranged from −0.05 to 0.05 g · hr−1, where only the last stage (Phase V) is associated with the second step of germination sensu stricto. The imbibition phase was the shortest germination phase (1.3 hr), whereas the predominantly biochemical phase was the longest (5 days after sowing [DAS]). Germinability was high (77.5–86.5%), with high daily embryo protrusion (2.46–3.03 diaspores · day−1). Protocorm emergence marked the end of the first step of germination sensu stricto (9 DAS), and first protocorm rupture (11 DAS) marked the end of the second step. The growth stimulus only concentrated the germination process, showing that the diaspores do not have primary dormancy. Knowing these diaspores’ peculiarities during germination sensu stricto avoids a false positive statement on the existence of diaspore dormancy.  相似文献

Background: In Southern Brazil, large areas of grassland have been replaced by Eucalyptus plantations. Vegetation is scarce under plantations which may be associated with Eucalyptus releasing of allelochemicals.

Aims: To investigate effects of Eucalyptus saligna leaf litter on the colonisation and development of the ground layer by grassland species and if these effects were related to allelopathy.

Methods: We assessed the effects of Eucalyptus litter on the establishment of species of the native grassland community and on seeded test species (Paspalum notatum and Lotus corniculatus – introduced). We tested the impact of the addition of E. saligna leaf litter, artificial leaves (shading and mechanical impediment) and shading. We also tested the phytotoxicity of the soil from E. saligna plantations.

Results: Species richness, diversity, plant height, cover and biomass were lower in E. saligna leaves and artificial leaves treatments than in the control (absence of litter). The test species showed lower biomass and higher mortality in treatment plots with E. saligna leaves, artificial leaves and shading treatments than in the control. Allelochemicals did not accumulate in soil at phytotoxic levels.

Conclusions: Eucalyptus saligna leaf litter suppresses the establishment of grassland vegetation, but the effects are mainly physical. Field evaluations with appropriate controls should be more extensively used in allelopathy investigations.  相似文献
