Myrothamnus flabellifoliusWelw. is a desiccation-tolerant (‘resurrection’)plant with a woody stem. Xylem vessels are narrow (14 µmmean diameter) and perforation plates are reticulate. This leadsto specific and leaf specific hydraulic conductivities thatare amongst the lowest recorded for angiosperms (ks0.87 kg m-1MPa-1s-1;kl3.28x10-5kg m-1MPa-1s-1, stem diameter 3 mm). Hydraulic conductivitiesdecrease with increasing pressure gradient. Transpiration ratesin well watered plants were moderate to low, generating xylemwater potentials of -1 to -2 MPa. Acoustic emissions indicatedextensive cavitation events that were initiated at xylem waterpotentials of -2 to -3 MPa. The desiccation-tolerant natureof the tissue permits this species to survive this interruptionof the water supply. On rewatering the roots pressures thatwere developed were low (2.4 kPa). However capillary forceswere demonstrated to be adequate to account for the refillingof xylem vessels and re-establishment of hydraulic continuityeven when water was under a tension of -8 kPa. During dehydrationand rehydration cycles stems showed considerable shrinking andswelling. Unusual knob-like structures of unknown chemical compositionwere observed on the outer surface of xylem vessels. These maybe related to the ability of the stem to withstand the mechanicalstresses associated with this shrinkage and swelling.Copyright1998 Annals of Botany Company cavitation, desiccation, hydraulic conductivity, refilling, resurrection plant, root pressure, xylem anatomy,Myrothamnus flabellifolius  相似文献

This research examined the hypothesis that as cacti evolve tothe leafless condition, the stem epidermis and cortex becomemore leaflike and more compatible with a photosynthetic role. All cacti in the relict genus Pereskia have non-succulent stemsand broad, thin leaves. All members of the derived subfamilyCactoideae are ‘leafless’, having an expanded cortexthat is the plant's only photosynthetic tissue. In Pereskia, leaves have a high stomatal density (mean: 50.7 stomata mm–2in the lower epidermis, 38.1 mm–2 in the upper epidermis),but stems have low stomatal densities (mean: 11.3 mm 2, threeof the species have none). Stems of Cactoideae have a high stomataldensity (mean: 31.1 mm–2, all species have stomata). Theouter cortex cells of stems of Cactoideae occur in columns, forming a palisade cortex similar to a leaf palisade parenchyma. In this palisade cortex, the fraction of tissue volume availablefor gas diffusion has a mean volume of 12.9%, which is identicalto that of Pereskia leaf palisade parenchyma. Pereskia stemcortex is much less aerenchymatous (mean: 5.3% of cortex volume).Cactoideae palisade cortex has a high internal surface density(0.0207 cm2 cm–2 which is higher than in Pereskia stemcortex (0.0150 cm2 cm–3) but not as high as Pereskia leafpalisade parenchyma (0.0396 cm2 cm–3). Pereskia stem cortexhas no cortical bundles, but Cactoideae cortexes have extensivenetworks of collateral vascular bundles that resemble leaf veins. We report measurements of evaporation rate, leaf resistanceto evaporation and water conduction in the stems of young olivetrees (Olea europea L.) growing in Messina, Italy, during thewinter and early spring. We have measured what Zimmermann calls‘leaf specific conductivity’ (LSC) of stem segmentsexcised from olive trees. The LSC is a measure of the specifichydraulic conductivity of stem segments normalized per unitarea of leaves supplied by the stem segment rather than perunit area of sapwood cross-sectional area. We find that theLSC's of primary stems were the largest followed in magnitudeby the LSC's of secondary stems and tertiary stems. Under winterand early spring conditions the maximum evaporative flux fromCoratina and Nocellara varieties of olive trees is about 2.6x 10–5 kg 8–1 m–2. From this and the LSC measurementswe calculate that the pressure gradients needed to maintainthis rate of evaporation in the steady state is 65 kPa m–1in primary stems, 170 kPa m–1 in secondary stems and 560kPa m–1 in tertiary stems. In this paper we report measurements concerning the conductivityof water and ions and the interaction between the two in excisedpieces of xylem of red maple stems under various conditions. We have also demonstrated that it is possible to detect theflow of solutions through the stems of maple by measuring thedegree of interaction between the flow of water and ions. Inthis technique we apply voltage pulses of ±V volts acrossa length of stem and detect the unequal current pulses resultingfrom the greater frictional drag when current (which is carriedprimarily by cations) is flowing against the water stream thanwhen flowing with the water stream. The hydraulic conductivityof recent maple sapwood ranges from 30 to 90 cm3 s–1 cm–2(J cm–3)–1 cm; in 2 mM KCl the electrical conductivityis roughly 3 x 10–4 mho cm–1 and the electro-kineticcross coefficient is roughly 4x10–5 A cm–2 (J cm–3)–1cm.  相似文献

The growth of Atriplex amnicola, its water and ion relations, and carbohydrate use were investigated in response to the interactiveeffects of salinity and root zone hypoxia in an experiment conductedin nutrient culture. One week of hypoxia in the root zone atboth 50 and 400 mol m–3 NaCl caused the cessation of rootgrowth, a reduction in shoot growth, and adversely affectedwater relations, but not ion relations or carbohydrate concentrations. Two weeks of hypoxia at 400 mol m–3 NaCl resulted in thedeath of root tips, a 20–fold increase in the resistanceto water flow from the exterior of the roots to the leaves, and a further deterioration in water relations. There was alsoa doubling of Cl concentrations in the xylem sap anda doubling of Na+ and Cl concentrations in the leaves. An increase in the concentration of starch in the leaves, andsugars in the leaves, stems and roots, indicated that therewere problems with carbohydrate use rather than supply. Underthe prevailing conditions of low vapour pressure deficit, iontoxicity was the most probable cause of injury to A. amnicolain hypoxic solutions at high salinity. The response of A. amnicolato the interactive effects of salinity and hypoxia were similarto those reported for non-halophytes, but occurred at highersalinities. Measurements of cavitation occurring in xylem conduits of differentstem parts in whole Chorisia insignis H.B. et. K. plants subjectedto water stress are reported. Pre-stressed plants were shownto undergo cavitation over 10 times greater than watered ones. The most vulnerable parts of plants were one-year-old twigswhere cavitation reached a peak of over 50 acoustic emissions(AE) min–1 while in two-year-old twigs AE min–1were about one half this value. Stem zones were found wherecavitation was typically very low even during water stress:these were one-year-old nodes and junctions where branches meet.Measurements of the inside diameters of xylem conduits and distributionof conduit ends in stem parts where AE were detected, showedthat nodes have a significantly larger percentage of narrowxylem conduits than internodes. Similar ‘constricted zones’were found injunctions with respect to two-year-old twigs. Hereabout 50 per cent of the xylem conduits were as narrow as 20to 50 µm in diameter. The distribution of xylem conduitends show about 3 per cent of them ending in the nodes and 1per cent in the internodes of one-year-old twigs. About 11.6per cent of xylem conduits end in the junctions and about ahalf in two-year-old internodes. Our data would give furtherexperimental evidence to the functional concept of ‘plantsegmentation’ into zones (internodes) more efficient inwater conduction, i.e. with wider xylem conduits but more vulnerableto cavitation and others (nodes and junctions) with oppositecharacteristics. Phytoplankton biomass, primary production rates and inorganicnutrients were measured in the uppermost layer of the ice-edgeregion and in open water and compared with environmental factorsduring a three-week cruise in September – October 1979.Biomass and production values were low (maximum 2.2 µgchl a l–1, 2.5 mg C m–3 h–1). A post-bloomcommunity of diatoms, consisting mainly of representatives ofChaetoceros, Leptocylindrus, Nitzschia and Thalassiosira, waspredominant. Concentrations of phosphate were quite low (maximum0.55 µM I–1). Nitrate and silicate ranged from nomeasurable quantities to 5.7 µM l–1 and 3.8 µMl–1, respectively. The possibility of light and nutrientlimitation on phytoplankton growth is discussed.  相似文献

The Occurrence of Nitrate Reduction in the Leaves of Woody Plants   总被引:13,自引:1,他引:12
Nitrate reductase activities greater than 02 µmol h–1g–1 f. wt, measured by an in vivo assay, occurred in 41per cent of a large sample (555 species) of woody plants. Ifseveral taxonomic groups (Gymnosperms, Ericaceae and Proteaceae)with consistently low activities were discounted activitiesgreater than 02 µmol h–1 g–1 f. wt occurredin 73 per cent of the species. This compares with 93 per centin herbaceous species, suggesting that leaf nitrate reductionis of common occurrence in woody plants. In a small sample ofspecies leaf nitrate reductase activity correlated with nitrateconcentration in the xylem sap. Low activities occurred consistentlyin the Gymnosperms, Ericaceae and Proteaceae. Feeding cut shootsof representatives of these groups with nitrate caused inductionof leaf nitrate reductase activity in the Gymnosperms and Proteaceae, but only limited induction in the Ericaceae. The Ericaceae, with the exception of two species, had low activities and lownitrate reductase inducibility. Root assimilation may predominatein the Gymnosperms and Proteaceae. It is suggested that nitratereduction generally occurs in the leaves of trees from a varietyof plant communities and that this may be related to the lowerenergy cost of leaf, as opposed to root, nitrate assimilation. Time series of phytoplankton biomass and taxonomic compositionhave been obtained for the 3 years 1992, 1993 and 1994 in thenorthern part of the Southern Ocean (station Kerfix, 5040'S,6825;E) Autotrophic biomass was low throughout the year (<0.2mg m–3 except during a short period in summer when a maximumof 1.2 mg chlorophyll (Chl) a m– was reached. During winter, the integrated biomass was low (<10 mg m–2) and associatedwith deeply mixed water, whereas the high summer biomass (>20mg m–2) was associated with increased water column stability.During summer blooms, the >10 µ;m size fraction contributed60% to total integrated biomass. Large autotrophic dinoflagellates, mainly Prorocentrum spp., were associated with the summer phytoplankton maxima and accounted for >80% of the total autotrophcarbon biomass. In November and December, the presence of thelarge heterotrophic dinoflagellates Protoperidinium spp. andGyro dinium spp. contributed a high proportion of total carbonbiomass. During winter, the <10 µm size fraction contributed80% of total Chi a biomass with domination of the picoplanktonsize fraction. The natural assemblage included mainly nakedflagellates such as species of the Prasinophyceae, Cryptophyceaeand Prymnesiophyceae. During spring, picocyanobacteria occurredin sub-surface water with a maximum abundance in September of106 cells 1–1  相似文献

In this paper we report for the first time the occurrence ofan inducible weak CAM in leaves of Talinwn triangulare (Jacq.)Willd. This plant is a terrestrial perennial deciduous herbwith woody stems and succulent leaves which grows under fullexposure and in the shade in northern Venezuela. Plants grownin a greenhouse (‘sun’ plants) and a growth cabinet(‘shade’ plants) with daily irrigation showed CO2uptake only during the daytime (maximum rate, 4?0 µmolm–2 s–1) and a small acid accumulation during thenight (6?0 µmol H+g–1 FW). Twenty-four hours aftercessation of irrigation, no CO2 exchange was observed duringpart of the night. Dark fixation reached a maximum (1?0 µmolCO2 m–2 s–1, 100 µmol H+ g–1 FW) onday 9 of drought. By day 30 almost no gas exchange was observed, while acid accumulation was still 10 µmol H+ g–1FW. Rewatering reverted the pattern of CO2 exchange to thatof a C3 plant within 24 h. Daytime and night-time phosphoenolpyruvatecarboxylase activity increased up to 100% (shade) and 62% (sun)of control values after 10 and 15 d of drought, respectively.Light compensation point and saturating irradiance were similarin well-watered sun and shade plants, values being characteristicof sun plants. CAM seems to be important for the tolerance ofplants of this species to moderately prolonged (up to 2 months)periods of drought in conditions of full exposure as well asshade, and also for regaining high photosynthetic rates shortlyafter irrigation. Planktonic primary production in the German Wadden Sea   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
By combining weekly data of irradiance, attenuation and chlorophylla concentrations with photosynthesis (P) versus light intensity(E) curve characteristics, the annual cycle of planktonic primaryproduction in the estuarine part of the Northfrisian WaddenSea was computed for a 2 year period. Daily water column particulategross production ranged from 5 to 2200 mg C m–2 day–1and showed a seasonal pattern similar to chlorophyll a. Budgetcalculation yielded annual gross particulate primary productionsof 124 and 176 g C m–2 year–1 in 1995 and 1996,respectively. Annual amounts of phytoplankton respiration, calculatedaccording to a two-compartment model of Langdon [in Li,W.K.W.and Maestrini,S.Y. (eds), Measurement of Primary Productionfrom the Molecular to the Global Scale. International Councilfor the Exploration of the Sea, Copenhagen, 1993, pp. 20–36],and dissolved production in 1996, were both in the range of24–39 g C m–2 year–1. Annual total net productionwas thus very similar to particulate gross production (127 and177 g C m–2 year–1 in 1995 and 1996, respectively).Phytoplankton growth was low or even negative in winter. Inspring and summer, production/biomass (Pr/B) ratios varied from0.2 up to 1.7. Phytoplankton growth during the growth seasonalways surpassed average flushing time in the area, thus underliningthe potential of local phytoplankton bloom development in thispart of the Wadden Sea. The chlorophyll-specific maximum photosyntheticrate (PBmax) ranged from 0.8 to 9.9 mg C mg–1 Chl h–1and was strongly correlated with water temperature (r2 = 0.67).By contrast, there was no clear seasonal cycle in B, which rangedfrom 0.007 to 0.039 mg C mg–1 Chl h–1 (µmolphotons m–2 s–1)–1. Its variability was muchless than PBmax and independent of temperature. The magnitudeand part of the variability of PBmax and B are presumably causedby changes in species composition, as evidenced from the rangeof these parameters found among 10 predominant diatom speciesisolated from the Wadden Sea. The ratio of average light conditionsin the water column (Eav) to the light saturation parameterEk indicates that primary production in the Wadden Sea regionunder study is predominantly controlled by light limitationand that nutrient limitation was likely to occur for a few hoursper day only during 5 (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) to 10 (PO4,Si) weeks in the 2 year period investigated.  相似文献

The internal cycling of nitrogen (N) has been studied in applerootstocks grown in sand culture and subjected to a constantN supply, or defoliation, or withholding the N supply in theautumn in order to manipulate the amount of N stored over thewinter. The trees subsequently received either no N or 8–0mol N m–3 (labelled with 15N to 498 atom%) with the irrigationthe following spring in order to determine the effect of thecurrent N supply on the remobilization of N for leaf growth. Provision of an autumnal N supply delayed leaf senescence andreduced the amount of N withdrawn from leaves from 156 mg Nplant–1 to 91 mg N plant–1. Loss of protein ribulose1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RUBISCO) accounted for83–87% of the soluble protein N lost during leaf senescence, there being a preferential loss of RUBISCO compared with othersoluble leaf proteins. Remobilization of N from perennial woody tissues (stems androots) in the spring was used predominantly for leaf growth. The amount of N remobilized depended upon the size of the Nstore, but was unaffected by the current N supply, demonstratingthat fertilization of trees does not alter the efficiency withwhich they cycle N. Degradation of RUBISCO in the autumn accountedfor between 32% and 48% of the N subsequently remobilized forleaf growth the following spring, suggesting that RUBISCO hasa role as a summer store for N. Salinity-induced Malate Accumulation in Chara   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Ion absorption by Chara corallina from solutions containingpredominantly KC1 or RbCl at up to 100 mol m–3 resultedin accumulation of salts and turgor regulation. Turgor regulationdid not occur in solutions containing Na+ or Li+salts. Duringion absorption from various salts of K+ and Rb+ vacuolar cationconcentration exceeded Cl concentration. This differencewas shown to be balanced by the synthesis and accumulation ofmalate. Vacuolar malate concentration reached 48 mol m3,with accumulation occurring at rates of up to 0.45 mol m–3h–1. Malate accumulation was inhibited by low externalpH and was dependent upon external HCO3 concentration. The synthesis of malic acid and its subsequent dissociationimposed a severe acid load on the cell. Biophysical regulationof cellular pH was achieved by a H+efflux at a rate of about40 nmol m–2 s–1from the cell. The results presentedargue against cytoplasmic Cl, HCO3 or pH regulatingmalate accumulation in Chara and it is suggested that malatetransport across the tonoplast may regulate malate accumulation. Ingestion and clearance rates, feeding behaviors and life historyvariables of the marine cladoceran Penilia avirostris were evaluatedover a range of food concentrations encountered in nature (0.01–3.0mm3 1–1 of Isochrysis galbana). Ingestion rates increasedand clearance rates decreased with increasing food concentration. No maximum feeding thresholds were observed over the range ofalgal concentrations offered. Weight-specific ingestion ratesdecreased with increasing body weight. Feeding behaviors suchas mandibular activity, abdominal claw rejections of cloggedfeeding structures and feeding appendage activity decreasedat a food level of 0.3 mm3 l–1 of l. galbana. Peniliaavirostris had very poor survivorship at extremely low (0.01mm3 l–1 and high (3.00 mm3 l–1) food levels. Mortalitywas hardly affected at food levels of 0.03–1.0 mm3 l–1Reproduction did not occur at food levels of  相似文献

Seventeen size-fractionation experiments were carried out duringthe summer of 1979 to compare biomass and productivity in the< 10, <8 and <5 µm size fractions with that ofthe total phytoplankton community in surface waters of NarragansettBay. Flagellates and non-motile ultra-plankton passing 8 µmpolycarbonate filters dominated early summer phytoplankton populations, while diatoms and dinoflagellates retained by 10 µm nylonnetting dominated during the late summer. A significant numberof small diatoms and dinoflagellates were found in the 10–8µm size fraction. The > 10 µm size fraction accountedfor 50% of the chlorophyll a standing crop and 38% of surfaceproduction. The <8 µm fraction accounted for 39 and18% of the surface biomass and production. Production by the< 8 µm fraction exceeded half of the total communityproduction only during a mid-summer bloom of microflagellates.Mean assimilation numbers and calculated carbon doubling ratesin the <8 µm (2.8 g C g Chl a–1 h–1; 0.9day–1)and<5 µm(1.7 g C g Chl a–1h–1; 0.5day–1)size fractions were consistently lower than those of the totalpopulation (4.8 g C g Chl a–1 h–1; 1.3 day–1)and the <10 µm size fraction (5.8 g C g Chl a–1h–1; 1.4 day –1). The results indicate that smalldiatoms and dinoflagellates in fractionated phytoplankton populationscan influence productivity out of proportion to their numbersor biomass. 1Present address: Australian Institute of Marine Science, P.M.B.No. 3, Townsville M.S.O., Qld. 4810, Australia.  相似文献

Pinitol, a Compatible Solute in Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L.?   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The irrigation of Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L. plants with400 mol m–3 NaCl to induce crassulacean acid metabolism(CAM) was accompanied by the accumulation of pinitol. Pinitolconstituted 71% of the soluble carbohydrate fraction and 9.7%dry weight in the CAM form. Pinitol in the C3 form did not exceed5% of the soluble carbohydrate fraction. Pinitol appeared metabolicallyinert: it was not readily degraded during 96 h of darkness inthe CAM form or during CAM deinduction. Preparations of CAMM. crystallinum protoplasts, vacuoles and chloroplasts showedpinitol to be chloroplastic at a concentration of about 230mol m–3 and cytosolic at about 100 mol m–3. No pinitolwas detected in vacuoles. CAM leaf extracts possessed a highermyo-inositol phosphate synthesising capacity than C3 extracts, revealing greater activity in the CAM form of glucose-6-phosphatecycloaldolase, an enzyme in the pathway of pinitol synthesis. Although pinitol accumulation and CAM induction could not beseparated and appeared to be specific responses to water stress, there may not be a causal link between them. Pinitol may functionas a compatible solute in the cytosol and especially the chloroplaststo counteract the presence of high concentrations of Na+ andCl ions in the vacuole. The accumulation of pinitol, though apparently not directly related to CAM may, like CAM,be viewed as an aspect of the adaptation of the plant to a reductionin water availability. Seasonal changes in the species composition of tintinnid ciliateswere examined based on time-series samples taken at 2 week intervalsover a 3 year period in Hiroshima Bay, the Seto Inland Sea ofJapan. The maximum abundance of total tintinnids over the entireperiod was 5.7 x 103 indi viduals l Among 32 speciesidentified, a consistent seasonal occurrence was recognizedin 22 species. The relationships between various environmentalfactors and the abundance of each species of tintinnids wereanalyzed using principal component analysis From this analysis, the abundance of many tintinnids was revealed to be associatedwith temperature, the <20 µm size fraction of chlorophylla and water column stability, but not with the <20 µmsize fraction of chlorophyll a, nor with salinity. From theseresults, tintinnid species were divided into five associationtypes: species whose abundance increased with increasing temperature, decreasing temperature, nanophytoplankton abundance, increasingwater column mixing, or increasing water stratification coupledwith low temperature.  相似文献

The response of phytoplankton to variations in the light regimewas studied during the VULCAN and ACDA cruises in the Antarctic.Unenriched batch cultures of 12–19 days' duration reachedchl concentrations of 10–50 µg–1 and exhibitedexponential growth rates, with the maximal rate being 0.41 doubl,day–1. Ice edge algae exhibited maximum growth rates atphoton flux densities (PFD) of 30–100 µE m–2S–1and the growth rate was reduced by about 30% at 500–1000µE m–2S–1 The chl/C ratio ranged between 0.004and 0.018, with the lowest ratios at PFDs above 500 µEm–2S–1 chl/C ratios were also below maximum at PFDsbelow 40–50 µE m–2S–1 The C:N:P ratioswere close to the Redfield ratios; the Si/C ratio averaged 0.16(atoms), and the ATP/C ratio averaged from 0.0024 to 0.0050in different culture senes. When thawed after having been frozenfor 10 days, shade-adapted cultures were in a much better conditionthan sun-adapted ones. P versus I data showed that the maximumassimilation number varied from 0.75 to 4.4 µg C (µgchl)–1h–1. It varied inversely with the chl/C ratio;therefore the maximum carbon turnover rate varied little betweensamples (0.024/0.035 h–1). Low biomass communities exhibitedrelatively high values for (the initial slope of P versus Icurves), low values for 1sat (160–330 µE m–2S–1),and they were susceptible to photoinhibition. In contrast, communitiesdominated by Odontella weissflogii exhibited low values for, a high value for Isat (560 µE m–2S–1 andthey tolerated high PFDs. The photo-adaptational status of thephytoplankton in natural water samples is discussed relativeto the profile of water column stability and mixing processes.  相似文献

Zinc-induced Vacuolation in Root Meristematic Cells of Cereals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the absence of Zn, vacuolar volume fractions of root meristematiccells of Secale cereale L. cv. K2, Triticum aestivum L. cv.Chinese Spring and Oryza sativa L. cv. IR34 were 5.64 x 10–2,2.17 x 10–2 and 1.63 x 10–2 µm3 vacuole µm–3tissue, respectively. A 4-d exposure to a subtoxic concentrationof zine (0.2 µg Zn cm–3) induced a 2.93-fold anda 6.78-fold increase in the total vacuolar volume fraction inOryza and Triticum, respectively, whereas no significant increasewas observed for Secale. It is proposed that this Zn-inducedvacuolation represents a compartmentalization mechanism. Theinitial total vacuolar volume fraction in Secale was greaterthan that for Oryza and Triticum and this may enable compartmentalizationof the metal soon after the onset of treatment so reducing itscytotoxic effects. These findings are similar to those observedin contrasting cultivars of Festuca rubra L. Triticum aestivum L, Secale cereale L, Oryza sativa L, zinc, root meristem, vacuolation  相似文献

Mucilage content in the stems of four sympatric cactus speciesvaried from none for Ferocactus acanthodes, 19% by dry weightfor Opuntia basilaris, 26% for Opuntia acanthocarpa, and 35%for Echinocereus engelmannii. Although the mucilage differedchemically among the species (the arabinose content ranged from17% to 51% of the sugar monomers), its relative capacitance(change in relative water content per unit change in water potential)remained about 15 Mpa–1. The relative capacitance of thewater-storage parenchyma averaged 1·04 Mpa–1 andwas consistent with the mucilage content, being lowest for F.acanthodes and highest for E. engelmannii. Mucilage isolatedfrom hydrated tissue was accompanied by solutes with an osmoticpressure of about 0·2 MPa. Such associated solutes influencethe water-release characteristics of mucilage and hence itsrole as an apoplastic capacitor. In particular, extracellularsolutes can facilitate the release of appreciable mucilage-boundwater to the cells at tissue water potentials occurring duringthe initial phases of drought.
