Based on detailed study of transverse serial sections, we recognize various modes of corallite increase in a multichain cateniform coral, Manipora amicarum from the Selkirk Member, Red River Formation, in Manitoba. One type of axial increase and four types of lateral increase involve normal, undamaged corallites, and one type of axial increase and one type of lateral increase occur during recovery processes of corallites damaged by sediment or bioclast influx. All but one of these types of increase are comparable to those in a single‐chain coral, Catenipora foerstei, which we previously documented from the same stratigraphic unit and locality. In M. amicarum, the formation of double ranks and agglutinated patches of corallites by normal corallites, and by recovery processes following corallite damage, is common and presumably genetically controlled. Agglutinated patches originate differently in C. foerstei, occurring sporadically or temporarily in only some coralla. Average annual vertical corallum growth in M. amicarum, as indicated by cyclic fluctuations of tabularial area, is higher than in C. foerstei, which has comparatively smaller corallites. In general, annual growth in M. amicarum is positively correlated with average tabularial area, negatively correlated with frequency of damaged corallites, and is not related to the frequency of corallite increase. In C. foerstei, however, there is a positive association between annual growth rate and the frequency of increase by damaged corallites, related to episodes of sediment or bioclast influx probably generated by storms. In comparison with C. foerstei, M. amicarum has a low frequency of corallite termination and extensive partial mortality is rare. It seems that the relatively rapid overall vertical corallum growth in M. amicarum was effective for protecting the coral from unfavourable situations, possibly by maintaining the growth surface higher above the substrate than in C. foerstei. Although these two species show many similarities in the types of corallite increase, their reactions and strategies in relation to physical disturbance were quite different.  相似文献

Protoheliolites is an early heliolitine coral characterized by closely spaced corallites separated in places by sparse coenenchyme. Growth characteristics in the type species, P. norvegicus, are revealed by detailed analysis based on serial peels and thin sections of coralla from the uppermost Katian of north‐western Estonia. Colonies of this species had a strong ability to recover from damage and partial mortality, resulting in various forms of rejuvenation, regeneration, fusion and reorganization of corallites; in some cases, this involved relatively large areas of undifferentiated soft parts. The shells of commensal cornulitids became enclosed in host coralla during colony growth. Coralla of P. norvegicus exhibit distinctive growth cycles due to responses to seasonal changes. The production of new corallites by coenenchymal increase usually occurred in low‐density bands, in which corallites generally display round to subrounded transverse outlines. In high‐density bands, the corallites became crenulated, their wall thickness increased, septal development was more pronounced, and the amount of coenenchyme increased. In addition to these cyclomorphic changes, there were significant astogenetic changes during growth. Compared with the early stage of colony development, distinctive characteristics in the late astogenetic stage include a decrease in the growth rate of the colony, better coordination among corallites, maximum development of corallite crenulations and septa in high‐density bands, more numerous coenenchymal tubules and a greater proportion of corallum area occupied by coenenchyme. In general, the role of polyps in determining morphological characteristics of individual corallites, such as tabularium area, corallite crenulations and wall thickness, was subordinate to the astogeny of the colony. Growth characteristics including colony‐wide coordination of polyp behaviour and subjugation of individuals to restore the colony following damage suggest a strong astogenetic control and high level of colony integration. Protoheliolites probably arose from a heliolitine genus rather than from a nonheliolitine group as some authors have proposed.  相似文献

Four species of the tabulate coral Catenipora are present in the Selkirk Member of the Red River Formation at Garson, Manitoba. They provide an opportunity to compare the growth characteristics of multiple, co‐occurring species that produced cateniform coralla. Corallite increase, cyclomorphism and other growth features show high variability within and/or among the species. A total of five types of lateral increase and two types of axial increase are recognized. Lateral increase accounts for over 80% of all occurrences of corallite increase in each species, with the four species differing significantly in the relative frequency of the various types of lateral increase. The type of axial increase, megacorallites and agglutinated patches of corallites that developed from normal, undamaged corallites in C. foerstei are species specific. In all species, cyclic fluctuations in the tabularial area of corallites are considered to be annual, and the variable growth rates within colonies and species are attributed to differences in astogenetic stages or environmental conditions. Average annual vertical growth was positively correlated with average tabularial area in C. foerstei, C. cf. robusta and C. rubra. Catenipora cf. agglomeratiformis, however, which had the lowest average tabularial area and greatest sensitivity to sediment influx, had a high average growth rate comparable to that of C. rubra, which had the largest average tabularial area. The formation of ranks or lacunae by certain types of lateral increase seems to have been the most effective strategy for maintaining and/or expanding the colony growth surface in all four species, and was most common in C. cf. agglomeratiformis. A reptant growth pattern, characterized by creeping ranks, permitted effective recovery of damaged parts as well as quick formation of new ranks or lacunae. The growth surface of these species was situated near the sediment–water interface. □Growth characteristics, intraspecific variation, interspecific variation, palaeobiology, tabulate corals.  相似文献

In 2003, a survey at waste management grounds and tire dealerships was conducted to determine the species composition of mosquitoes in tires in southern Manitoba, Canada. Over 25% of the 1,142 tires sampled contained a total of 32,474 mosquito larvae and pupae. Culex restuans made up at least 95% of the larvae collected for each month of the summer. Culiseta inornata and Culex tarsalis reached their greatest numbers in July and August, respectively, though they were never abundant. Ochlerotatus triseriatus was also found but never reached more than 1% of the total larvae collected in any given month. Mosquito prevalence was more than three times greater in August (36.1%) than in June (11.7%). Orientation affected prevalence of mosquitoes in tires: 31.4% of vertical tires (tires standing on their treads) contained mosquitoes, whereas mosquitoes were found in only 18.9% of horizontal tires (tires parallel to the ground). Tires in the eastern region of Manitoba contained mosquitoes more often (61.7%), irrespective of date, than Winnipeg (25.9%), the central region (29.1%), or the western region (19.8%). Mosquito prevalence was similar across three size categories of tires, car tires (18.8%), truck tires (19.8%), and semi-trailer tires (26.7%), though tractor tires (47.8%) contained significantly more mosquitoes than tires in the other categories.  相似文献

Six species of the genus Panonychus are known from Japan. Life-history parameters of all six species were investigated at 25 °C, and for three species two strains of different geographical origin were included. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m ) ranged from 0.172/day for the P. osmanthi albino strain to 0.209/day for P. citri, while the net reproductive rate (R 0) varied from 23.98 in the thelytokous species P. thelytokus to 46.61 in P. citri. Both values were higher in the polyphagous species (P. ulmi, P. mori and P. citri), which are considered crop pests, than those in the oligophagous species (P. thelytokus and P. osmanthi), considered non-pests. The only exception was P. bambusicola, an oligophagous non-pest species with R 0- and r m -values closely resembling those of the three polyphagous species. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The ichnogenus Rusophycus includes a wide range of short bilobate excavations generally attributed to variable feeding behaviors of arthropods, especially trilobites. An unusual Rusophycus assemblage from Upper Ordovician Georgian Bay Formation in Ontario departs radically from previously described examples and presents new challenges for understanding the behavior represented by these traces. This specimen is unique in the arrangement of multiple Rusophycus burrows in a circular, lens-shaped array (as opposed to a linear or random arrangement typical of other Rusophycus assemblages). The size and shape of the individual Rusophycus components are consistent with traces attributed to the coeval trilobite Flexicalymene. Multiple Rusophycus assemblages likely reflect aggregations of trilobites in response to a local concentration of food. The topology of this particular Rusophycus assemblage suggests that the trilobites opportunistically exploited a rich and narrowly restricted food source, perhaps the decaying remains of a buried organism.  相似文献

The present study has identified a new species from the previously monotypic genus Darwiniella Anderson, 1992. Darwiniella angularissp. n. is similar to Darwiniella conjugatum (Darwin, 1854) in external shell morphology and arthropodal characters. Darwiniella conjugatum, however, has a sharper tergal spur and a less obvious adductor plate angle when compared to Darwiniella angularissp. n. Molecular analyses on mitochondrial DNA 12S rDNA and COI regions also support the morphological differences. Sequence divergences in 12S rDNA and COI between Darwiniella conjugatum and Darwiniella angularissp. n. are 5% and 13% respectively, which are equivalent to the inter-specific sequence divergences in other barnacles. Both Darwiniella species are common on Cyphastrea Milne-Edwards and Haime, 1848 corals and Darwiniella angularissp. n. is also collected from Astreopora de Blainville, 1830 corals in Taiwan.  相似文献

In the Fågelsång section, the new Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Upper Ordovician Series, 22 samples from the E14 (a, b and c) and E15 outcrops have been studied for chitinozoans. They yield rich and rather diverse species assemblages of this microfossil group. The approximately 16-m-thick sampled part of the section can be subdivided, from bottom to top, into two biozones and a subbiozone: the Laufeldochitina stentor zone, the Eisenackitina rhenana subzone and the Lagenochitina dalbyensis zone. The boundary between the lowest biozone and the subzone is situated 1.7 m below the marker “Fågelsång Phosphorite” bed, thus only slightly lower (0.3 m) than the base of the Nemagraptus gracilis graptolite biozone, which defines the base of the Upper Ordovician Series. The base of the L. dalbyensis zone is located just above the Fågelsång Phosphorite, remarkably low compared to the graptolite biostratigraphy. It is evident that the chitinozoan biozonation provides an additional tool to recognise the base of the Upper Ordovician in this section. Furthermore, a distinct faunal change is shown across the phosphorite bed, possibly indicating a hiatus.  相似文献

Three major lineages of mites are parasitic in the nasal passages of birds, i.e., Rhinonyssidae (Mesostigmata), Ereynetidae (Prostigmata), Cytoditidae, and Turbinoptidae (Astigmata). The most diverse family of avian nasal mites is Rhinonyssidae, which include obligate hematophagous endoparasites of nonratite birds worldwide. Nasal mites have been surveyed extensively in the United States, yet there has never been a Canadian survey. There are only 4 published, and 3 unpublished, rhinonyssid species records from birds in Canada. While surveying the nasal mites associated with birds of Alberta and Manitoba (western Canada), 1 new species of Dermanyssus and 5 new species of Rhinonyssidae were recovered. Herein, I describe and illustrate Dermanyssus diphyes n. sp., Ptilonyssus calvaria n. sp., P. nivalis n. sp., P. pinicola n. sp., P. plesiotypicus n. sp., and Sternostoma setifer n. sp.  相似文献

We report a long-term survey summarising the seasonal variation in species composition of Peristenus species, and their levels of parasitism in an assemblage of Lygus spp., over more than 10 years in southern Alberta in western Canada. Plants sampled include alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), canola (Brassica napus L.), and stands of different weed and grass species commonly found on crop field edges. Three native Peristenus species (Peristenus dayi, Peristenus mellipes, and Peristenus howardi) were recorded in 2003–2011 and 2013–2015. In laboratory trials, P. mellipes emerged 13 days earlier than P. howardi. Degree-days for field-collected individuals suggested a sequential occurrence during the growing season: P. dayi appears early in the season, followed by P. mellipes, and later on by P. howardi. Studies of species composition and phenology of native parasitoids of insect pests provide valuable baseline information when considering introduction of exotic agents, and contribute to the management and improvement of conservation biological control by endemic natural enemies in agricultural systems.  相似文献

Gene products of 31 protein coding loci in Aspatharia pfeifferiana examined by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis revealed genetic variation at 10 (32.26%) of the loci studied. The mean number of alleles per locus was 1±39 (±0±11), and the average heterozygosity value was 0±074 (±0±026). Not only is this the first account of electrophoretic variants of this species, but also the results show that the species has less genetic variation than most other molluscs. Genetic variation compares favourably with values obtained for other invertebrate species and for fish from the same geographical region. A. pfeifferiana has sufficient variation to adapt to environmental changes or to be used in selection programmes. The results are useful for conservation stocking and it will undoubtedly aid in improving the systematics and phylogeny of freshwater clams in general.  相似文献

Abundant information on drilling predation upon fossil bivalves, gastropods, and brachiopods has been accumulated during the past several decades, but very little is known about the predation on marine, infaunal carnivorous scaphopods. A survey of over 440 specimens of the scaphopod Dentalium gracile collected from the Upper Cretaceous Millwood Member (Campanian) of the Pierre Shale at a site near Russell, Manitoba displays a drilling percentage of approximately 35%. This figure is higher than previously reported for the scaphopods of similar age elsewhere, but is comparable to or lower than that of the sub-Holocene (34–61%). The difference in drilling percentage among different collections may be taxon-related or affected by the composition and structure of the fossil community. Morphologically, the drill-holes, produced by predatory drilling, are beveled with a countersunk profile of clean sharp edges. The drill-hole inner margin is ovate whereas the outer margin is nearly circular. Among the Manitoba specimens, drill-holes seem to be more common on the lateral side. Presumably due to the lack of effective defense strategy, the prey effectiveness is low (∼3.2%). There is no correlation between drill-hole dimension and scaphopod prey size, indicating that predator size does not correlate with the prey size. Nearly 480 specimens of cephalopods, pelecypods, and gastropods were also collected from the same community. There were only a total of 16 drill-holes on this additional material. Over 400 specimens of the only naticid Euspira obliquata were recovered from the same site and are believed to be the predators of the scaphopods and other molluscs. The low percentage (∼2.5%) of drilling on the abundant gastropod E. obliquata may indicate mistaken or opportunistic attacks by the predator, or that the cannibalism is not common in this community.

La question est posée A rugosan pattern of the septal ridges, formerly described in Kerforneidictyum and Palaeacis is pointed out in Trachypsammia monoseptata (Permian of Timor) for which only the ‘Medianseptum’ had been observed. T. monoseptata exhibits a strong cardinal ridge in dorsal or internal position. just opposite a shorter counter ridge, thus creating a plane of bilateral symmetry. The ridges assumed to be alar can be identified by their proximal ends being in contact with the ‘Medianseptum’. The major ridges (proto and metaridges) are obvious, the minor ones show only their very proximal ends. T. monoseptuta could be a calicinal young stage of T. dendroides. T. dendroides (Permian of Timor) shows a plane of bilateral symmetry, the cardinal ridge is stronger and longer than the others, the counter shorter, the alar ridges can be identified in transverse section. major and minor ridges are well developed; the number of ridges is often 32. In T.xizangensis (Permian of Tibet) only the bilateral symmetry is known, while there are no data for T mediterranea (Permian of Sicily). The systematic affinities between Palaeacis and Trachiypsammia pointed out on the basis of microstructural data are also supported by the septal ridges pattern. Do Palaeacis, Trochypsammia and others form a special division of Tabulate corals? That is the question  相似文献

A new astropectinid sea star,Coulonia parva n. sp., is described from the Santonian of the Sierra de Montsech, northern Spain. The single specimen shows part of a rather weathered ventral side. It is characterized by comparatively long arms (R/r approx. 3/1), with one row of actinals reaching far into the arms; inferomarginals on the interbrachial arc have deep fasciolar grooves that are less developed on the arms; there are no larger spines on adambulacrals and probably also on inferomarginals. Based on presence of deep marginal fascioles,C. parva n. sp. is inferred to have shared the capability for self-burial with the relatedC. platyspina Hess &Blake.   相似文献

The life cycle and production of Tinodes waeneri (L.) was examined at five shallow littoral localities in Lake Esrom, Denmark, during 1979/80. Five larval instars were demonstrated. The differences in temporal composition of instars indicated three different life cycles. A bivoltine strategy was shown for the most exposed locality which also had the highest average abundance equal to 11 500 ind. m–2. A univoltine population was found in the more sheltered NW part of the lake with an average density of 1 500 ind. m–2. At the three remaining stations the life cycles were partly bivoltine with wintering populations of mixed cohorts and densities between 10 500 and 3 000 ind. m–3. Two distinct flight periods with maxima in June and August were demonstrated for bi- and partly bivoltine populations. Differences in rates of growth and elimination added to the variability in life cycle. Growth rates peaked in August (5.0–7.4% d–1) at an average temperature of 20°C. Estimates of production ranged from 1.9 to 17.5 g AFDW m–2 a–1 with an average of 8.0 g AFDW m–2. The P/B ratios, which were within the expected range for uni- and bivoltine populations of trichopterans, were 5.73 for the bivoltine population and 3.31 for the univoltine population.Estimates of consumption revealed that the populations could be sustained by autochthonous epilithic production in the habitats. Variability in the quality and seasonal availability of food were judged to influence the type of life cycle.Lake Esrom Littoral Research Publ. No. 8. Total numbers of adult female southern elephant seals (cows) breeding at Macquarie Island were determined for 19 of the 52 year period between 1952 and 2004. Totals for 1952–1987 (exc. 1959 and 1985) were estimated from the relationship between censuses of the isthmus study area and concurrent censuses for the whole island. Totals for 1987–2004 were obtained by direct census of the entire island in mid-October. Cow numbers decreased from a maximum of about 40,000 in the 1950s to a minimum of 18,300 in 2000, but then increased slightly to 19,200 in 2004. Nonlinear and post-hoc linear analysis of the count data identified 1999 as the year when the exponential rate of change (r) slowed from −1.4% per annum to near zero. The rate of change was not uniform for each census sub-area counted (1987–2004), suggesting that certain terrestrially based density-dependent mechanisms were influencing the annual distribution of cows.  相似文献

The clupeomorph fish Gasteroclupea branisai Signeux, 1964 from the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene of El Molino Formation, Cayara locality, Bolivia is redescribed in detail. This South American double-armored herring is the sole member of the family Gasteroclupeidae and exhibits a unique combination of features (skull roof ornamented with fine tubercles, beryciform foramen, endopterygoid teeth, about 16–18 supraneurals, a series of 35–38 predorsal and 40 ventral scutes, median fins small and containing 12–14 rays) that clearly supports its assignment to the extinct clupeomorph order Ellimmichthyiformes. G. branisai shares a number of synapomorphies with Sorbinichthys elusivo and S. africanus (five hypurals, second hypural autogenous, distal end of the second uroneural not reaching the distal end of the first uroneural) with which it forms a monophyletic assemblage recognized herein for the first time as the new suborder Sorbinichthyoidei. The peculiar morphology of Gasteroclupea that is characterized by having an extremely deep abdominal profile, hypertrophied coracoid, and elongated pectoral fins, resembles in many aspects the body plan of extant freshwater hatchetfishes of the characiform family Gasteropelecidae, suggesting that the morphological adaptations of G. branisai can be related, at least in part, to a similar lifestyle.  相似文献

Abstract:  The taxonomy, biostratigraphical and palaeogeographical distribution of the Lower Ordovician graptolite genus Bryograptus is evaluated. Bryograptus is recognized as a distinct triradiate anisograptid with a multiramous, pendent rhabdosome. The species of the genus Bryograptus can be interpreted as shallow water faunal elements with a strongly limited biogeographical distribution to the Atlantic Faunal Realm. Bryograptus is restricted to a narrow interval in the Upper Tremadocian, the Bryograptus Biozone of Scandinavia and South America (Argentina), making it a taxon with a high potential for precise biostratigraphical correlations. The proximal end development can be used to differentiate the genus Bryograptus from other pendent multiramous graptoloid genera with a homoplastic rhabdosome development. Characteristics of the proximal end development and structure easily differentiate these genera in relief specimens, but not in flattened material.  相似文献
