A conversation with John Sulston

Sir John Sulston was a co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2002. He won the prize for his discoveries concerning "genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death," along with his colleagues sydney Brenner and H. Robert Horvitz. Dr. Sulston was founding director of the Sanger Centre, Cambridge, England, which he headed from 1992 to 2000. From 1993 to 2000, he led the British arm of the international team selected to work on the Human Genome Project. He is co-author of the book The Common Thread: A Story of Science, Politics, Ethics, and the Human Genome, published by Joseph Henry Press in 2002.This interview was conducted on December 20, 2002, shortly after Dr. Sulston was awarded his Nobel Prize and was originally broadcast on that date on radio station WPKN-FM in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The interview was conducted by Valerie Richardson, the Managing Editor of The Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine.Dr. Sulston has been an outspoken advocate against letting the data from the Human Genome Project become property of commercial interests that would charge the world's scientific community for its use. Since leaving the Sanger Institute, he has worked with OxFam, the Oxford Campaign for Famine Relief.     

中国生态学期刊现状分析

通过对我国12种主要生态学期刊的出版指标、引用指标和网络传播能力的现状分析,得出《生态学报》、《应用生态学报》、《植物生态学报》和《生态学杂志》已经成为我国生态学期刊的第一方阵,出版能力和引用表现都要优于其他期刊,但是期刊特色不明显。生态学期刊已经不能满足生态学快速发展的需要,应该有新的期刊来承载新生分支学科的内容,同时生态学期刊需要进一步加强网络传播能力的建设。最重要的是生态学期刊应该从散落在其他学科的状态中聚集起来形成生态学期刊集群。     

《应用生态学报》论文参考文献著录要求

为提高参考文献编排质量,有效配合期刊检索与评价, 推动国际学术交流,《应用生态学报》依据GB/T7714-2005对论文参考文献著录格式加以调整,自2008年始文献采用顺序编码制著录. 本文给出了具体实例, 并提出了作者在引用文献过程中应注意的问题.     

Einthoven Dissertation Prizes 2008

For the 19th time in a row, the Netherlands Society of Cardiology (NVVC), the Interuniversity Cardiology Institute of the Netherlands (ICIN), and the sponsor, Sanofi-Aventis have supported the competition for the best three PhD theses on a cardiovascular subject published last year. The prize carries the name of one of the great Dutchmen in the history of cardiology: Willem Einthoven (1860-1927), the pioneer of the human ECG and winner of the Nobel Prize in 1924. The jury reviewed a total of 20 dissertations. The jury members were impressed and pleased by the scientific quality of the work of the young doctors. As always, it was not easy to decide which ones to nominate for the final round. Three nominees, Gabe Bleeker, Niels Riksen and Joanne Schuijf, presented their work at the spring meeting of the NVVC, which was held in Amsterdam on 18 April 2008.     

JPE Best Paper awards (2020)

Journal of Plant Ecology (JPE) decided to establish awards of JPE Best Papers, in order to thank and encourage authors to submit their valuable research to JPE. This award will be given annually to the first author(s) of 2–5 papers selected by the editors, according to the citation data as well as the impact in the field of plant ecology. We will place extra emphasis on authors who had completed graduate studies not more than 5 years before submission of the paper, to encourage more early-career scientists to submit their work to JPE. It will come with a ‘JPE Best Paper’ certificate, as well as a price money of Chinese RMB 5000. This year, we selected the best papers from all the articles published in the year of 2020. Here, we are delighted to announce the three winners of a ‘JPE Best Paper’ award and highlight the significance of these papers below.     

Kurt Wüthrich and NMR of biological macromolecules

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is the only experimental technique that can determine the structures and dynamics of biological macromolecules and their complexes in solution and with atomic resolution. The award of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Kurt Wüthrich of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and The Scripps Research Institute honors his pioneering efforts in developing and applying this technique. Wüthrich shared the prize with John B. Fenn and Koichi Tanaka, who were recognized for the development of ionization methods for the analysis of proteins using mass spectrometry.     

Twenty years of Road Ecology: a Topical Collection looking forward for new perspectives

The European Journal of Wildlife Research introduces a new Topical Collection focused on Road Ecology. This Topical Collection aims to be a useful tool for the development of generalized principles and applications concerning wildlife-related aspects of Road Ecology. Submissions exploring new or lesser-known costs and potential benefits for wildlife coexisting with road networks are encouraged.

From Basic Research to Molecular Breeding——Chinese Scientists Play A Central Role in Boosting World Rice Production

On November 18, 2018, the Future Science Prize Awarding Ceremony was held in Beijing. In the area of life science, Professors Jiayang Li, Longping Yuan, and Qifa Zhang shared the prize for their pioneering contributions in producing high-yield, superior-quality rice through systematic study of molecular mechanisms associated with speci?c rice features and application of novel approaches in rice breeding. The Future Science Prize is also touted as ‘‘China's Nobel Prize", fully af?rming their achievements in rice basic research and breeding.

Six extracts from Chinese medicinal plants: Tin Men Chu, Sey Lau Pai, Siu Mao Heung, Bak Tao Yung, Kam Chin Chiu and Liao Ya, were tested for their inhibitory effect on selected food-borne bacteria by the well assay technique. Among them, Tin Men Chu, Siu Mao Heung and Sey Lau Pai inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Shigella flexneri, Streptococcus faecalis, Salmonella paratyphi, Salm. enteritidis, Enterobacter aero-genes, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Proteus vulgaris, Alcaligenes faecalis , and three strains of Listeria monocytogenes . Two of these three extracts, Tin Men Chu and Siu Mao Heung, suppressed the growth of L. monocytogenes Scott A in cabbage juice. This inhibition was prevented by the addition of protein but not sodium chloride. Plant extracts show potential to control the growth of food-borne bacteria.
