The effects of temperature on growth, pelagic larval duration (PLD) and maximum swimming speed were compared in the tropical fish marine species Amphiprion melanopus, to determine how temperature change affects these three factors critical to survival in larvae. The effects of rearing temperature (25 and 28 °C) on the length of the larval period and growth were examined in conjunction with the effects of swimming temperature (reared at 25 °C, swum at 25 and 28 °C, reared at 28 °C, swum at 25 and 28 °C) on critical swimming speed (U-crit). Larvae reared at 25 °C had a 25% longer pelagic larval duration (PLD) than larvae reared at 28 °C, 12.3 (±0.3) days compared with 9 (±0.6) days at 25 °C. To offset this effect of reduced developmental rate, growth and U-crit were measured in larvae reared at 28 and 25 °C at the same absolute age (7 days after hatching (dah)) and same developmental age (7 dah at 28 °C cf. 11 dah at 25 °C), corresponding to the day before metamorphosis. Larvae reared at 25 °C were smaller than larvae reared at 28 °C at the same absolute age (7 dah at 25 °C cf. 7 dah at 28 °C), yet larger at similar developmental age (11 dah at 25 °C cf. 7 dah at 28 °C) when weight and standard length were compared. This stage-specific size increase did not result in better performance in larvae at the same developmental age, as there was no difference in U-crit in premetamorphic larvae reared at either temperature (7 dah at 28 °C c.f 11 dah at 25 °C). However, U-crit was considerably slower in 7-day-old larvae reared at 25 °C than larvae of the same absolute age (7 dah) reared at 28 °C. Swimming temperature controls demonstrated that a change in temperature immediately prior to swimming tests did not effect swimming performance for larvae reared at either temperature.A decreased in rearing temperature resulted in longer larval durations, reduced growth rates and slower swimming development in larvae. However, the magnitude of the response of each of these traits varied considerably. As such, larvae reared at the lower temperature were a larger size at metamorphosis but had poorer relative swimming capabilities. This study highlights the importance of measuring a range of ecologically relevant traits in developing larvae to properly characterise their relative condition and performance in response to environmental change.  相似文献

Injection of the juvenile hormone analog (JHA) methoprene into day 3, fifthinstar larvae of Bombyx mori induced developmental arrest. Feeding activity declined, and the larvae remained as larvae for more than 2 weeks, after which they died. After JHA injection, the hemolymph ecdysteroid titer was low, and the prothoracic glands were almost inactive for 7 days. During this period, prothoracic glands were stimulated by prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) in vitro, indicating that JHA did not inhibit the competence of the glands to respond to PTTH. When brain-corpora cardiaca-corpora allata complexes were removed from intact fifth-instar larvae on day 4, the prothoracic glands became autonomously active and produced enough ecdysone for pupation. When PTTH injections were given to larvae previously injected with JHA (7 days before), the larvae recovered feeding activity, purged their guts, and pupated. Injections of 20-hydroxyecdysone into larvae that had been injected with JHA 7 days earlier induced larval molting. These results suggest that JHA affects both the brain and the prothoracic gland.  相似文献

Larvae of the bamboo borer, Omphisa fuscidentalis are in diapause for more than nine months (Singtripop, T., Wanichaneewa, S., Tsuzuki, S., Sakurai, S. 1999. Larval growth and diapause in a tropical moth, Omphisa fuscidentalis Hampson. Zool. Sci. 16, 725-733). To examine the endocrine mechanisms underlying this larval diapause, we assayed the responsiveness of the diapausing larvae to 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) and a juvenile hormone analogue (JHA: S-methoprene). 20E injection caused the larvae to halt movement, followed by deposition of a pupal cuticle. Topical application of JHA induced pupation in a dose-dependent manner. JHA also induced pupation of the larvae whose brains were removed before JHA application. In those larvae, the prothoracic glands became active and competent to respond to brain extracts within seven days after JHA treatment, and the hemolymph ecdysteroid concentration began to increase 12 days after JHA application. These results indicate that JHA stimulates the prothoracic glands of diapausing Omphisa larvae, terminating larval diapause, in contrast with previous findings that JH inhibits the brain-prothoracic gland axis and thus maintains the larval diapause. Current results therefore suggest a novel regulatory mechanism for larval diapause in this species.  相似文献

The effects of JHA (ZR-515) application or brain implantation on metamorphosis and adult development were examined in the last instar larvae and pupae of Mamestra brassicae. When JHA was applied to neck-ligated 4- or 5-day-old larvae or to the isolated abdomens of 5-day-old larvae containing implanted prothoracic glands taken from 5-day-old larvae, the insects pupated. Dauer pupae and diapausing pupae treated with JHA showed adult development. By contrast, pupation could not be induced by the application of JHA to 2- or 3-day-old neck-ligated larvae or to the isolated abdomens of 5-day-old larvae containing implanted prothoracic glands from 0-day-old larvae. Implantation of a brain into neck-ligated 3- or 5-day-old larvae (at the beginning of gut emptying and wandering) caused pupation of the host. A similar result was obtained when both a brain and the prothoracic glands from 0- or 5-day-old larvae were implanted into the isolated abdomens of 5-day-old larvae. These results indicate that activation of the prothoracic glands by application of JHA is temporally restricted to the last part of the last larval instar and to the pupal stage, while the activation by prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) can occur throughout the last larval instar and the pupal stage. In addition, the implantation of brains or application of JHA to neck-ligated 5-day-old larvae 25 days after ligation seldom induced pupation of the hosts, a result which suggests that larval prothoracic glands maintained under juvenile hormone (JH) or PTTH-free conditions for long periods of time may become insensitive to reactivation by both hormones.  相似文献

Feeding invertebrate larvae may be food limited while developingin the ocean. If they are, then their time in the plankton isprolonged, which likely increases mortality. Food limitationcould be due to the quantity and/or quality of the food available.In an effort to answer how food type influences larval nutrition,we compared growth, development and lipid deposition for Dendrasterexcentricus larvae reared in natural seawater from two depths(1 and 20 m) and in filtered seawater on a monoculture laboratorydiet of 6 cells µL–1 of the green alga Dunaliellatertiolecta (Butcher). Five days post-fertilization, larvaereared on the laboratory diet had developed to the latest stage,were the largest and had lipid deposits. Larvae reared on naturalsurface water were intermediate in size and developmental stage,and larvae reared in the water from 20 m depth were the smallestand developed the slowest. This trend continued at 8 days post-fertilizationwhen surface water diet larvae were similar in size to laboratorydiet larvae, but their juvenile rudiments were significantlysmaller. To assess food availability in each food treatment,we compared the concentration of chlorophyll (Chl) a, b andc in natural seawater from each depth and in D. tertiolectaculture in filtered seawater. Natural seawater collected fromthe surface had the highest concentration of Chl a and c, whereasChl b was not significantly different between treatments. IncreasedChl concentrations in the surface water are likely due to higherconcentrations of diatoms and dinoflagellates, which are typicallynot high-quality food items for echinoid larvae. Our resultssupport a hypothesis that echinoid larvae in the water columnmay be limited by food quality.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Echinoid larvae have been found previously to developshorter arms as phytoplankton concentrations increase. In thepresent study, the skeletal dimensions of larvae of the seaurchins Lytechinus pictus and Strongylocentrotus purpuratuswere measured after exposure to dissolved organic compoundsin seawater. The presence of glucose or individual amino acids(at 1 or 2 µM), a mixture of 16 different amino acids(100 nM each), or algal exudate resulted in larvae with shorterarms (by 12 to 88%), relative to larvae in seawater with noadditions. Larvae exposed to mixtures of amino acids also hadchanges in the constituents of their internal free amino acidpools (as determined by HPLC). For another echinoid, Dendrasterexcentricus, amino acid transport (T, from 500 nM) by individuallarvae (n = 47) scaled to arm length (L) as follows: T = 2.06L0.81(0.81 ± 0.26,95% confidence intervals). Mass (M) andmetabolic rate (MR) did not scale in the same manner (as transport)to arm length for larvae of the echinoid Centrostephanus coronatus(MR = 148L1.51; M = 1.7L2.01). These characteristics may scaleto arm length independently from transport rate under certainconditions. Larvae of echinoderms respond morphologically to"signals" in their environment that may indicate the availabilityof dissolved and paniculate nutrients. This in turn will haveconsequences for their ability to take up and metabolize thesenutrients. The response may be mediated by surface receptorsfor dissolved organic compounds, or by changes in the sizesof intracellular substrate pools.  相似文献

Cirripede larvae can occur year-round in temperate and tropicalwaters, often in significant numbers, yet the species compositionof the ‘Balanus sp.’ component is rardy studied.Weekly plankton samples were analyzed qualitatively for larvalcirripede species and stage over a year (1977–1978) attwo Rhode Island stations. Six species of larvae were foundin Lower Narragansett Bay (30° salinity). Semibalanus balanoidesand Balanus balanus have a single winter brood. S. balanoidesis the predominant winter breeder with a minor release of naupliiin early December and major release in March followed by cypridsin mid-April.B. balanus populations release all larvae in Marchwith cyprids in mid-April. Balanus crenatus is mainly a winterbreeder, but has multiple broods; it does not breed in July-Septemberwhen the water temperature is above 18°C. Balanus venustusis the predominant summer breeder, and larvae were observedfrom May through December (water >8°C). Larvae of Chthamalusfragilis and Balanus eburneus occur in low numbers from May-October.At the Pettaquamscutt River site (12 salinity), Balanus improvisuslarvae predominate and early stage nauplii (I-II) occur in samplesyear round (0–27°C). Two peaks of later stage naupliiand cyprids occur in late spring (May) and early winter (Nov.-Jan.).Continued temperatures bdow 5°C or above 20°C appearto inhibit larval development. Comparison of results with existing literature reveals severalsignificant findings. The bimodal rdease of S. balanoides larvaeis unusual and may be in response to the phytoplankton dynamicsof the year; however, the existence of distinct races of S.balanoides may also be a factor. Larvae of B. venustus predominatein the lower bay during the summer, yet this species is unreportedin past studies. B. improvisus nauplii are more cold tolerantthan previously reported. 该文报道外源蜕皮激素(ED)和保幼激素类似物(JHA)对褐飞虱Nilaparvata lugens (Stal)翅型分化及体内酯酶活性、可溶性糖和游离氨基酸含量等的影响。褐飞虱在3、4龄若虫期经JHA处理后,所羽化出的成虫短翅型比例明显升高;而在5龄若虫期处理,所羽化出成虫的短翅型比例无明显变化。ED处理能增加3、4龄若虫体内酯酶活性、可溶性糖及游离氨基酸含量,而JHA处理则能有效地抑制ED的这些生物活性,这可能是JHA处理后褐飞虱成虫短翅型比例提高的生理生化基础。  相似文献

应用示踪原子法,研究了家蚕Bombyx mori 5龄幼虫丝腺与脂肪体细胞内蛋白质合成的变化规律及保幼激素类似物(JHA738)的调节作用。从5龄初到龄末,家蚕丝腺细胞内蛋白质合成持续升高,5龄中期、后期的蛋白质合成活性分别是前期的1.60倍和2.86倍;全龄出现2个合成高峰,一个是在5龄72h,为细胞固有蛋白质合成高峰,另一个是在5龄192h,为丝蛋白合成高峰。脂肪体细胞内蛋白质合成作用呈现脉冲式的变化。在5龄前期和中期用JHA处理家蚕(剂量为4μg/条),对丝腺细胞固有蛋白质合成和脂肪体细胞蛋白质合成均表现出抑制作用,而对丝蛋白合成则表现出促进作用。本实验结果为进一步阐明JHA增丝机理提供了直接证据。  相似文献

报道了人工饲料、圆白菜和玉米苗三种食物对甜菜夜蛾Spodoptera exigua发育历期、蛹重以及成虫产卵和飞行能力的影响。幼虫取食人工饲料时发育历期最短,蛹最重(138 mg),产卵量最高(643粒);在12 h的吊飞测试中,成虫飞行距离最远(25.5 km),飞行时间最长(6.2 h),飞行超过10 km的个体占67.9%,超过5 h的占60.7%。幼虫取食玉米苗时发育历期最长,蛹最轻(52 mg),产卵量最低(416粒),成虫仅能飞行3.3 km,1.7 h,飞行超过10 km或5 h的个体均仅占4.2%,各项指标均显著低于人工饲料组。幼虫取食圆白菜时各项指标与人工饲料组基本相似(幼虫历期和蛹重除外),而显著优于玉米苗组(幼虫历期除外)。这些结果表明,幼虫食物对甜菜夜蛾的生长发育、产卵及飞行能力均有显著的影响,因而是影响其个体发育、种群增长及种群动态的重要因素之一。同时,由于取食本人工饲料的各项指标均优于其它两种食料植物,因而可作为饲养甜菜夜蛾的实用饲料。  相似文献

The abundance and distribution of Candea larvae was studiedin Ísafjord-deep, north-west Iceland, at approximatelymonthly intervals from February 1987 to February 1988 Zooplanktonsampling was made at nine stations along the length of the fjord,while temperature and chlorophyll a measurements from one ofthe stations are also presented Larvae of six species occurredin the samples, Eualus pusiolus and Pandalus borealis were mostnumerous, constituting 62 8 and 25 9% of the larvae respectively.The other species were, in declining order of abundance, Pandalusmontagui, Spirontocaris spp. (S spinus and s lilljeborgii) andSabinea septemcarinata. Eualus pusiolus was of highest abundancein the outer and middle parts of the fjord, while P.borealiswas most common in the middle and inner parts The onset of hatchingof all species in April–May appeared closely linked tothe phytoplankton spring bloom, while the temperature in thefjord was by then near the annual low (2–3°C). Exceptfor E pusiolus, of which a small part of the population produceda second brood during the summer, most of the larvae had disappearedfrom the plankton by the middle of August The monthly carapacegrowth of P.borealis larvae during the summer months was estimatedto be 1.0 mm.  相似文献

Larvae of Nyctiphanes capensis Hansen were reared in the laboratoryunder different trophic conditions (i.e., algal, animal andmixed diets) from the second calyptopis stage to the first juvenilestage. It is demonstrated that diet is important in determininggrowth rates and development of the larvae. The highest growthrates were achieved on diets of Artemia nauplii mixed with eitherthe flagellate Tetraselmis or Pseudodiaptomus nauplii. Poorerdietary conditions such as with the diatom Phaeodactylum yieldedslower growth rates where additional moults were needed to completefurcilia development. Under favourable trophic conditions theintermoult period was 4–6 days and was not age dependent.Three dominant pathways of pleopod development were found inhealthy individuals.  相似文献

A double-antibody ecdysone-specific radioimmunoassay was used to clarify whether the effects on metamorphosis of the juvenile hormone analogue methoprene are correlated with changes in ecdysteroids level. It appears that a small ecdysteroids peak, 5 days before pupation, is responsible for the transition from inhibition to defective metamorphosis. Study of the changes in ecdysteroid titer in last-instar larvae treated with the JHA 2 days prior to the appearance of the above small ecdysteroids' peak showed an immediate reduction in ecdysteroid level, followed by cyclic, successively reduced titer for about 20 days. After this period the larvae ceased to feed and entered to a diapauselike stage which ended in the death of the larvae. A similar effect on ecdysteroid titer and developmental arrest was exhibited by JHA-treated first-instar larvae. The mechanism of the interactions between JHA and ecdysteroid level deserves further investigation.  相似文献

Larvae of the land-crab, Cardisoma guanhumi, Latreille. weremaintained in 24 different combinations of salinity and temperaturefrom the time of hatching. Survival to the first crab occurredin salinities of 15–45 p.p.t., 25° and 30°C. Durationof the five zoeal and one megalops stages was similar in salinitiesof 20–40 p.p.t., but at 15 and 45 p.p.t. a greater periodof time was required for total development. Mortality of allthe larvae at 20°C suggests that temperature plays a moreimportant role in survival and distribution of the larvae ofC. guanhumi than salinity. Increments of size in crabs during the first seven post-larvalmolts were similar in salinities of 5–35 p.p.t., 25°C,but in fresh water increase in size at the time of molting wasreduced. Although there was no apparent relationship betweenfrequency of molting and salinities of 5–35 p.p.t., theduration of intermolt was reduced in crabs maintained in freshwater, and survival was also lower. From the present study there is no indication that the morphologicaland physiological processes that are associated with adaptationof the adult crab to the terrestrial environment are initiatedduring larval development. Although the adult crabs have successfullypenetrated the terrestrial environment, the pelagic larvae arestill subject to the numerous ecological variables of the estuarineand marine environments.  相似文献

分别用1 μg/头、0.1 μg/头和0.01 μg/头浓度的保幼激素类似物methoprene(蒙五一五)体外处理亚洲玉米螟5龄幼虫,测定幼虫体壁组织、血清和血细胞溶离物中酚氧化酶的活性。结果表明: 1 μg/头 methoprene处理组和0.1 μg/头处理组幼虫体壁组织中酚氧化酶活性与对照组相比有显著提高(P<0.01),血清和血细胞溶离物中酚氧化酶活性也显著上升(P<0.01)。将含有20-羟基蜕皮酮的人工饲料饲喂亚洲玉米螟5龄幼虫,处理组幼虫体壁组织的酚氧化酶活性下降(P<0.05),血清和血细胞溶离物中的酚氧化酶活性均低于对照组 (P<0.01)。这些结果表明methoprene可以诱导亚洲玉米螟5龄幼虫体内酚氧化酶活性的上升,而20-羟基蜕皮酮则抑制了酚氧化酶的活性。  相似文献

Programmed cell death (PCD) plays a critical role during animal development through the destruction of unneeded cells and tissues. In some insects, the prothoracic glands (PGs) and anterior silk glands (ASGs) are larval-specific tissues that are normally eliminated by PCD after pupation. Previous studies report that juvenile hormone analog (JHA) terminates the larval diapause of Omphisa fuscidentalis by increasing the hemolymph ecdysteroids that trigger PCD. Because JHA may indirectly induce the PCD of the PGs and ASGs of Omphisa diapausing larvae, the effects of JHA on the induction of PCD were determined. The application of 1μg JHA induced PCD in the PGs and ASGs of larvae identified as stage G0 (prior to pupation). The injection of 1μg 20E triggered the PCD of the ASGs when the larvae expressed a G0-G1 morphology, whereas PCD occurred in the PGs on day 1 post-injection. Histological studies revealed similar patterns of morphological changes during the PG and ASG PCD in the JHA- and 20E-treated larvae. Furthermore, to confirm that PCD was induced by a high ecdysteroid level that increases after JHA application, the expression profiles of EcR-A and EcR-B1 in the PGs and ASGs from the JHA-treated larvae were examined, and the results showed that the expression levels of EcR-A and EcR-B1 mRNA increased during the G0 stage. These results suggest that JHA may be involved in PCD by increasing the ecdysteroid titer, leading to termination of the larval diapause period in Omphisa fuscidentalis.  相似文献

2000年7月中旬和8月中旬, 分别测定了采自田间的转CpTI-Bt基因双价抗虫棉(SGK321, 以下简称CpTI-Bt棉)和转Bt基因抗虫棉(中30,以下简称Bt棉)对棉铃虫Helicoverpa armigera幼虫存活、生长的影响。结果表明:7月中旬两种转基因抗虫棉抗虫效果均较好,尤其是CpTI-Bt棉棉叶和花瓣对4龄幼虫3天内致死率为92%以上;8月中旬两种转基因棉的抗虫活性均明显降低,且Bt棉的杀虫活性显著低于CpTI-Bt棉,其幼虫死亡率与对照受体棉中16的死亡率之间无显著差异,仅显著抑制了幼虫的生长;石远321(SGK321受体品系)的花瓣具有一定的抗虫活性,可显著降低取食幼虫的体重,甚至造成部分幼虫死亡; CpTI-Bt棉中,花瓣和棉叶的抗虫性明显高于蕾和铃心。对5龄幼虫取食棉铃1日后的营养指标测定结果显示: 两种转基因抗虫棉处理的幼虫相对生长率和相对取食量均显著低于石远321,但两者之间无显著差异; CpTI-Bt棉处理的幼虫近似消化率显著低于石远321和Bt棉,但其食物利用率显著高于石远321和Bt棉。  相似文献

This study presents results of the vertical behaviour of theEuropean sardine (Sardina pilchardus) larvae as observed atsea off the NW Iberian coast during an oceanographic cruiseconducted in May 2002. Samples were taken in a grid of 38 stations(conductivity-temperature-depth [CTD] measurements and LonghurstHardy Plankton Recorder [LHPR] plankton hauls); a 69-h fixedstation study was also performed (hourly CTD measurements andLHPR/neuston hauls every 2 h). The horizontal distribution oflarvae is closely related to the circulation patterns measuredby a current metre-mooring array deployed during the cruise.Larvae were mainly distributed in the upper 20–25 m ofthe water column, in evident association with the waters ofthe Western Iberia Buoyant Plume (WIBP). Large (older) larvaeare found mainly in the surface layers, and larval size decreaseswith depth. A diel rhythm of migration to the neuston layerwas observed, correlated with the inflation/deflation activityof the swim bladder. Larvae with lengths greater than 12.5 mmand inflated swim bladders were only found in this layer. Consideringthe near surface stratification conditions for food availabilityand Ekman transport in the upper few metres, even small verticalmigrations of larvae can be very important for their survivaland subsequent recruitment success.  相似文献
