Choice of pacing strategy and the benefit of aerodynamic drafting are thought to be key determinants of racing performance. These effects have largely been analysed without reference to final outcome, in small datasets with low temporal resolution, and a focus on human swimming, cycling and running. Here, we determined the position and speed of 44,803 racehorses, once per second, in 3,357 races ranging in length from 1006 to 4225 m (50.9-292.9 seconds duration) using a validated radio tracking system. We find that aerodynamic drafting has a marked effect on horse performance, and hence racing outcome. Furthermore, we demonstrate that race length-dependent pacing strategies are correlated with the fastest racing times, with some horses reaching a maximum speed in excess of 19 m s(-1). The higher speeds seen with certain pacing strategies may arise due to the nature of pack racing itself, or may be a reflection of individual capabilities, that is, corresponding to horses that perform well in roles suited to their 'front-running' or 'chaser' personality traits.  相似文献

A number of blood biochemical parameters, including the activities of the plasma enzymes creatine kinase (CK), aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT), lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase, were measured in 23 athletes before, and immediately after a 56-km running race. Of the 23 athletes, 18 had previously completed standard 42-km marathon or longer (up to 90-km) ultra-marathon races, whereas not one of the other five athletes had previously run in a long-distance race. After the race, plasma CK and ASAT activities had both risen at least 280% more in the novice runners despite their much slower mean running speed (9.8 +/- 0.4 vs. 13.8 +/- 0.3 hm/h). There were no other inter-group differences in the absolute levels of the other measured biochemical parameters, although the rise in plasma calcium during the race was significantly greater in the experienced marathon runners. This study shows that either higher levels of training, or previous ultra-marathon racing experience, or both, is associated with lower immediate post-exercise levels of plasma enzyme activity. This is compatible with the finding that physical training reduces post-exercise plasma enzyme levels.  相似文献

The present study compared morphological and functional parameters of the left ventricle by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in competitive athletes engaged in endurance and power activities and sedentary control subjects. Twenty male subjects, 7 endurance-trained athletes (ETA) (age 23.8+/-3.5 yr), 7 strength-trained athletes (STA) (age 22.8+/-4.0 yr), and 6 sedentary controls (age 24.1+/-2.2 yr) were studied by MRI. In the ETA group body size related left ventricular mass (rel.LVM) was significantly higher than that in the STA group (71.0+/-9.2 vs 57.4+/-15.7 g/m3). The difference between their size related left ventricular wall thickness (rel.LVWT) values (9.37+/-1.0 vs 8.37+/-1.8 mm/m) was near to the level of significance (p=0.057). Relative left ventricular internal diameter (rel.LVID) was significantly higher in the ETA group compared to the STA group (42.3+/-1.0 vs 40.1+/-2.5 mm/m, p<0.05). The muscular quotient (MQ=LVWT/LVID) of the ETA group was not significantly higher compared to the strength athletes. Relative left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) was also higher in the ETA group than in the STA group (69.5+/-6.7 vs 59.9+/-8.2 ml/m3, p<0.05) and the controls (53.6+/-3.7, p<0.001). Significantly higher relative stroke volume (SV) was measured in the ETA group compared to the STA group and the controls (41.0+/-5.7; 32.6+/-6.9; 32.0+/-3.2 ml/m3). According to the present data, the strongest impact on LV cavity size and wall thickness is caused by long-term high intensity endurance training. Intense strength training does not necessarily induce wall thickening.  相似文献

Concerns have been expressed concerning animal-welfare issues associated with whip use during Thoroughbred races. However, there have been no studies of relationships between performance and use of whips in Thoroughbred racing. Our aim was to describe whip use and the horses' performance during races, and to investigate associations between whip use and racing performance. Under the Australian Racing Board (ARB) rules, only horses that are in contention can be whipped, so we expected that whippings would be associated with superior performance, and those superior performances would be explained by an effect of whipping on horse velocities in the final 400 m of the race. We were also interested to determine whether performance in the latter sections of a race was associated with performance in the earlier sections of a race. Measurements of whip strikes and sectional times during each of the final three 200 metre (m) sections of five races were analysed. Jockeys in more advanced placings at the final 400 and 200 m positions in the races whipped their horses more frequently. Horses, on average, achieved highest speeds in the 600 to 400 m section when there was no whip use, and the increased whip use was most frequent in the final two 200 m sections when horses were fatigued. This increased whip use was not associated with significant variation in velocity as a predictor of superior placing at the finish.  相似文献

One hundred and eighty-nine Thoroughbred horses that had won Graded Stakes races in North America were genotyped with the Illumina Equine SNP50 bead chip. Association tests using PLINK to determine whether any SNPs were associated with optimum racing distance (7 furlongs and under compared to 8-10 furlongs) identified a locus on ECA18 that was statistically significant (-log 10 EMP2=1.63) at the genome-wide level following permutation analysis (10,000 permutations). Bioinformatic analysis revealed that the two ECA18 SNPs with the highest statistical significance spanned the MSTN (myostatin) locus. Mutations in myostatin in several mammalian species have been associated with increased muscling, with a preferential increase in fast glycolytic type IIB fibres, which would increase power potential. Thoroughbred horses that race over sprint distances, which are 5-7 furlongs, are often characterized by impressive hind quarter musculature, strongly suggesting that the association observed between the ECA18 SNPs and optimum race distance is mediated through MSTN.  相似文献

Two studies were undertaken to characterize the effects of carbohydrate ingestion on fuel/hormone response to exercise and muscle glycogen utilization during prolonged competitive exercise. In study 1, eighteen subjects were divided into three groups, matched for maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) and blood lactate turnpoint. All subjects underwent a 3-day carbohydrate (CHO) depletion phase, followed by 3 days of CHO loading (500-600 g.day-1). During the race, the groups drank either 2% glucose (G), 8% glucose polymer (GP), or 8% fructose (F). Muscle biopsies were performed before and after the race and venous blood was sampled before and at regular intervals during the race. In study 2, eighteen subjects divided into 2 matched groups ingested either a 4% G or 10% GP solution during a 56 km race. Despite significantly greater CHO ingestion by GP and F in study 1 and by GP in study 2, blood glucose, free fatty acids and insulin concentrations, muscle glycogen utilization and running performance were not different between groups. These studies show (i) that hypoglycaemia is uncommon in athletes competing in races of up to 56 km provided they CHO-load before and ingest a minimum of 10 g CHO.h-1 during competition; (ii) that neither the amount (10 g vs 40 g.h-1) nor the type of carbohydrate (G vs GP vs F) has any effect on the extent of muscle glycogen depletion or running performance in matched subjects racing over distances up to 56 km.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of different sport activities on cardiac adaptation. Echocardiographic data of 137 athletes and 21 non-athletes were measured and compared in two age groups 15-16 and 17-18 years of age. Athletes belonged into three groups according to their sports activity (endurance events, power athletes, ball game players). The observed variables were related to body size by indices in which the exponents of the numerator and the denominator were matched. Left ventricular hypertrophy was manifest in all athletic groups. Power athletes had the largest mean left ventricular wall thickness (LVWTd) in both age groups. In the older age group differences between the athletic groups were smaller, but the endurance and power athletes had significantly higher wall thickness. Left ventricular internal diameter (LVIDd) was the largest in the endurance athletes, while mean relative muscle mass (LVMM) was the largest in the power athletes. LVMM of the older endurance athletes was significantly larger. Muscular quotient (MQ) was the highest in the endurance athletes; in the 17-18-year group there was no inter-event difference. Bradycardia was most manifest in the endurance athletes and ball game players, power athletes had higher resting heart rates than non-athletic subjects. It can be inferred that endurance training induces firstly an enlargement of the left ventricle what is then followed by an increase of muscle mass. In the studied functional and regulatory parameters no difference was found between the athletic and non-athletic groups.  相似文献

Maximal blood lactate steady state concentration (MLSS) and anaerobic threshold (AT) have been shown to accurately predict long distance events performance and training loads, as well, in human athletes. Horse endurance races can take up to 160 km and, in practice, coaches use the 4 mM blood lactate concentration, a human based fixed concentration to establish AT, to predict training loads to horse athletes, what can lead to misleading training loads. The lactate minimum speed (LMS) protocol that consists in an initial elevation in blood lactate level by a high intensity bout of exercise and then establishes an individual equilibrium between lactate production and catabolism during progressive submaximal efforts, has been proposed as a nonfixed lactate concentration, to measure individual AT and at the same time predicts MLSS for human long distance runners and basketball players as well. The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of the LMS protocol in endurance horse athletes. Five male horses that were engaged on endurance training, for at least 1 year of regular training and competition, were used in this study. Animals were submitted to a 500 m full gallop to determine each blood lactate time to peak (LP) after these determinations, animals were submitted to a progressive 1000 m exercise, starting at 15 km h(-1) to determine LMS, and after LMS determination animals were also submitted to two 10,000 m running, first at LMS and then 10% above LMS to test MLSS accuracy. Mean LP was 8.2+/-0.7 mM at approximately 5.8+/-6.09 min, mean LMS was 20.75+/-2.06 km h(-1) and mean heart rate at LMS was 124.8+/-4.7 BPM. Blood lactate remained at rest baseline levels during 10,000 m trial at LMS, but reached a six fold significantly raise during 10% above LMS trial after 4000 and 6000 m (p<0.05) and (p<0.01) after 8000 and 10,000 m. In conclusion, our adapted LMS protocol for horse athletes proposed here seems to be a reliable method to state endurance horse athletes LT and MLSS.  相似文献

We have studied the variations induced in iron status parameters by four endurance races of different lengths. A comprehensive group of 48 healthy, non-iron deficient, endurance athletes were evaluated before and after four different cross-country and roller ski races: I = Skirollonga, roller ski race for individuals (n = 10), mean duration (MD) = 1 h 48 min; II = Marcialonga, cross-country ski race for individuals (n = 9) MD = 3 h 10 min; III = 12-h of Caldonazzo (Trento-Italy) roller ski relay race (n = 13) MD = 12 h; IV = 24-h of Pinzolo (Trento-Italy) cross-country ski relay race (n = 16) MD = 24 h. In the relays the MD includes both exercise and recovery times. Blood samples were taken before and after every race for the determination of the following haematological parameters: red blood count, haemoglobin, and packed cell volume, serum iron concentration [SI], serum ferritin concentration [FERR] and total iron binding capacity (TIBC). The results showed a constant significant increase of [FERR] after the races (+44.9% in I, +50.5% in II, +51.2% in III and +36.5% in IV, P less than 0.01) while [SI] increased only in the first two races (+28.2% in I and +19.7% in II, P less than 0.01) and showed a remarkable decrease in the longer races (-46.1% in III and -39% in IV, P less than 0.01). The TIBC increased in all the races (except II) to the same extent (range 10%-12%).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Regular exercise is beneficial for cardiovascular health but a recent meta-analysis indicated a relationship between extensive endurance sport and a higher risk of atrial fibrillation, an independent risk factor for stroke. However, data on the frequency of cardiac arrhythmias or (clinically silent) brain lesions during and after marathon running are missing.Methods/ DesignIn the prospective observational "Berlin Beat of Running" study experienced endurance athletes underwent clinical examination (CE), 3 Tesla brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), carotid ultrasound imaging (CUI) and serial blood sampling (BS) within 2-3 days prior (CE, MRI, CUI, BS), directly after (CE, BS) and within 2 days after (CE, MRI, BS) the 38th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2011. All participants wore a portable electrocardiogram (ECG)-recorder throughout the 4 to 5 days baseline study period. Participants with pathological MRI findings after the marathon, troponin elevations or detected cardiac arrhythmias will be asked to undergo cardiac MRI to rule out structural abnormalities. A follow-up is scheduled after one year. RESULTS: Here we report the baseline data of the enrolled 110 athletes aged 36-61 years. Their mean age was 48.8 [PLUS-MINUS SIGN] 6.0 years, 24.5 % were female, 8.2 % had hypertension and 2.7 % had hyperlipidaemia. Participants have attended a mean of 7.5 [PLUS-MINUS SIGN] 6.6 marathon races within the last 5 years and a mean of 16 [PLUS-MINUS SIGN] 36 marathon races in total. Their weekly running distance prior to the 38th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON was 65 [PLUS-MINUS SIGN] 17 km. Finally, 108 (98.2 %) Berlin Beat-Study participants successfully completed the 38th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2011. DISCUSSION: Findings from the "Berlin Beats of Running" study will help to balance the benefits and risks of extensive endurance sport. ECG-recording during the marathon might contribute to identify athletes at risk for cardiovascular events. MRI results will give new insights into the link between physical stress and brain damage.Trial registrationclinicaltrials.gov NCT01428778.  相似文献

Cardiac remodelling is commonly defined as a physiological or pathological state that may occur after conditions such as myocardial infarction, pressure overload, idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy or volume overload. When training excessively, the heart develops several myocardial adaptations causing a physiological state of cardiac remodelling. These morphological changes depend on the kind of training and are clinically characterised by modifications in cardiac size and shape due to increased load. Several studies have investigated morphological differences in the athlete’s heart between athletes performing strength training and athletes performing endurance training. Endurance training is associated with an increased cardiac output and volume load on the left and right ventricles, causing the endurance-trained heart to generate a mild to moderate dilatation of the left ventricle combined with a mild to moderate increase in left ventricular wall thickness. Strength training is characterised by an elevation of both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. This pressure overload causes an increase in left ventricular wall thickness. This may or may not be accompanied by a slight raise in the left ventricular volume. However, the development of an endurancetrained heart and a strength-trained heart should not be considered an absolute concept. Both forms of training cause specific morphological changes in the heart, dependent on the type of sport. (Neth Heart J 2008;16:129-33.)  相似文献

Leptin and adiponectin play an essential role in energy metabolism. Leptin has also been proposed as a marker for monitoring training load. So far, no studies have investigated the variability of these hormones in athletes and how they are regulated during cumulative exercise. This study monitored leptin and adiponectin in 15 endurance athletes twice daily in the days before, during and after a 9-day simulated cycling stage race. Adiponectin significantly increased during the race (p = 0.001) and recovery periods (p = 0.002) when compared to the baseline, while leptin decreased significantly during the race (p < 0.0001) and returned to baseline levels during the recovery period. Intra-individual variability was substantially lower than inter-individual variability for both hormones (leptin 34.1 vs. 53.5%, adiponectin 19% vs. 37.2%). With regards to exercise, this study demonstrated that with sufficient, sustained energy expenditure, leptin concentrations can decrease within the first 24 hours. Under the investigated conditions there also appears to be an optimal leptin concentration which ensures stable energy homeostasis, as there was no significant decrease over the subsequent race days. In healthy endurance athletes the recovery of leptin takes 48-72 hours and may even show a supercompensation-like effect. For adiponectin, significant increases were observed within 5 days of commencing racing, with these elevated values failing to return to baseline levels after 3 days of recovery. Additionally, when using leptin and adiponectin to monitor training loads, establishing individual threshold values improves their sensitivity.  相似文献

We studied the effect of resistance running on left cardiac ventricle size and rectus femoris muscle fiber composition. Ten male Wistar rats were trained on a treadmill 6 days per week for 12 weeks. Ten rats remained sedentary and served as controls. A higher endurance time (40%) and cardiac hypertrophy in the trained animals were indicators of training efficiency. Morphometric analysis of the left ventricle cross-sectional area, left ventricular wall, and left ventricular cavity were evaluated. The endurance-running group demonstrated a hypertrophy of the ventricular wall (22%) and an increase in the ventricular cavity (25%); (p<0.0001). Semi-quantitative analysis of rectus femoris fiber-type composition and of the oxidative and glycolytic capacity was histochemically performed. Endurance running demonstrated a significant (p<0.01) increase in the relative frequency of Type I (24%), Type IIA (8%) and Type IIX (16%) oxidative fibers, and a decrease in Type IIB (20%) glycolytic fibers. There was a hypertrophy of both oxidative and glycolytic fiber types. The relative cross-sectional area analysis demonstrated an increase in oxidative fibers and a decrease in glycolytic fibers (p<0.0001). Changes were especially evident for Type IIX oxidative-glycolytic fibers. The results of this study indicate that the left ventricle adapts to endurance running by increasing wall thickness and enlargement of the ventricular cavity. Skeletal muscle adapts to training by increasing oxidative fiber Type. This increase may be related to fiber transformation from Type IIB glycolytic to Type IIX oxidative fibers. These results open the possibility for the use of this type of exercise to prevent muscular atrophy associated with age or post-immobilization.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between vertical jump measures and sprint speed over 10, 20, and 40 m in professional basketball players. Thirty-three professional basketball players aged (±SD) (27.4 ± 3.3 years), body mass (89.8 ± 11.1 kg), and stature (192 ± 8.2 cm) volunteered to participate in this study. All participants were tested on squat jump, countermovement jump, and 40-m running speed. The results show that all jump measures in absolute terms were correlated significantly to running performance over 10-, 20-, and 40-m sprint times. None of the jumping performance peak powers and reactive strength were found to have a correlation to running speed times in absolute term. Furthermore, all jump height measures relative to body mass except reactive strength had a marked and significant relationship with all sprint performance times. The results of this study indicate that while there is a strong and marked relationship between 10-, 20-, and 40-m sprint, there is also a considerable variation within the factors that contribute to performance over these distances. This may indicate that, separate training strategies could be implemented to improve running speed over these distances.  相似文献

The structural-functional state of the left ventricle of boys aged 8-12 years going in for middle-distance racing (the 1st group), swimming (the 2nd group) and wrestling (the 3rd group) has been studied by the method of echo-, poly- and electrocardiography. It is found that posterior wall of the ventricle myocardium is thicker, size of its anteroposterior cavity as well as cavity volume and total volume are larger, the myocardium mass is higher in younger sportsmen as compared with non-sportsmen of the same age. These data indicate the development of ventricular hyperfunction in both isometric and isotonic regimes. In trained pupils the heart rate is lower, all the phases of total systole are longer, intrasystolic value is smaller, and myocardium tension index is higher. They are the indicators of economy development in ventricular activity. These differences are the most significant in children developing their endurance.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the influence of lean body mass (LBM) and body weight (BW) on the thermoregulatory responses and endurance performance of male and female athletes in warm, humid environments. Ten (5 males, 5 females) healthy, moderately trained athletes with varying physiques performed a self-paced 30-min run on a motorized treadmill in warm (30 degrees C), humid (60% relative humidity) conditions, with the aim of running the greatest distance possible. Males completed one trial, while females completed two trials, one in each of the follicular (Fol) and luteal (Lut) phases of the menstrual cycle in a randomized fashion. There were no significant differences among groups for distance run (males, 5.2 +/- 0.4 km; Fol, 4.9 +/- 0.1 km; Lut, 4.7 +/- 0.1 km). However, following analysis of covariance accounting for LBM and BW, the distances run were significantly different. The adjusted means for distance run after accounting for LBM were 3.4 km for males (P < 0.05), 5.9 km for Fol, and 5.6 km for Lut. Adjusted means accounting for BW resulted in run distances of 6.5 km for males (P < 0.05), 4.2 km for Fol, and 4.0 km for Lut. Thermoregulatory responses such as rectal and skin temperatures were similar among groups. Avenues of heat loss and gain were altered relative to the menstrual cycle phase. The results suggest that one reason for the disparity in performance between male and female athletes over similar race distances might in part be related to unequal body characteristics and in particular to differences in LBM.  相似文献

Although East African black athletes dominate endurance running events, it is unknown whether black and white endurance runners with similar racing ability, matched for training, may differ in their skeletal muscle biochemical phenotype. Thirteen Xhosa (XR) and 13 Caucasian (CR) endurance runners were recruited and matched for 10-km performance, average preferred racing distance (PRD(A)), and training volume. Submaximal and maximal exercise tests were done, and vastus lateralis muscle biopsies were taken. XR were significantly lighter and shorter than CR athletes but had similar maximum oxygen consumption corrected for body weight and peak treadmill speed (PTS). XR had lower plasma lactate concentrations at 80% PTS (P < 0.05) compared with CR. Also, XR had more type IIA (42.4 +/- 9.2 vs. 31.3 +/- 11.5%, P < 0.05) and less type I fibers (47.8 +/- 10.9 vs. 63.1 +/- 13.2%, P < 0.05), although oxidative enzyme activities did not differ. Furthermore, XR compared with CR had higher lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in homogenate muscle samples (383 +/- 99 vs. 229 +/- 85 mumol.min(-1).g dry weight(-1), P < 0.05) and in both type IIa (P < 0.05) and type I (P = 0.05) single-fiber pools. A marked difference (P < 0.05) in the composition of LDH isoform content was found between the two groups with XR having higher levels of LDH(5-4) isoforms (skeletal muscle isozymes; LDH-M) than CR, which was not accounted for by fiber-type differences alone. These results confirm differences in muscle phenotype and physiological characteristics, particularly associated with high-intensity running.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for racing performance traits in Quarter Horses in Brazil. The data (provided by the Sorocaba Jockey Club) came from 3 Brazilian hippodromes in 1994-2003, with 11 875 observations of race time and 7775 of the speed index (SI), distributed in 2403 and 2169 races, respectively. The variance components were estimated by the MTGSAM program, under animal models including the random additive genetic effect, random permanent environmental effect, and the fixed effects of sex, age and race. Heritabilities for race time and the SI, for the 3 distances studied (301, 365 and 402 m), varied from 0.26 to 0.41 and from 0.14 to 0.19, respectively, whereas repeatabilities varied from 0.36 to 0.68 (time) and from 0.27 to 0.42 (SI) and the genetic correlations from 0.90 to 0.97 (time) and from 0.67 to 0.73 (SI).  相似文献
