The status signalling hypothesis states that conspicuous male plumage varies among males and serves as an honest signal of male quality and competitive ability. We expected immature‐plumaged males of the Saffron Finch Sicalis flaveola to feed their incubating mates and nestlings and remove faecal sacs at lower rates than those of mature‐plumaged males. We also predicted that females paired with immature‐plumaged males would compensate for their mates’ lower contribution. We found no differences in either feeding rates or sanitation rates between immature‐ and mature‐plumaged males. Similarly, females mated to immature‐ and mature‐plumaged males fed nestlings at equivalent rates. Apparently, male plumage colour and age are not reliable signals of the ability of a male Saffron Finch to provide for his mate and offspring. 相似文献

Although factors influencing androgen deposition in the avian egg and its effects on nestling fitness are recently receiving considerable attention, little is known about the potential costs of high testosterone levels in the females. Our study aimed at determining the effect of injections of testosterone (T) in female zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), on clutch size, egg mass, yolk mass, and yolk androgen content. Females were given a single bolus injection of T in a range of doses after laying the first egg. Results show that administration of T negatively affected clutch size; the strength of this effect increased with increasing doses of T. Females injected with the highest testosterone dose showed suppressed oviposition of the third and the fourth eggs. Interestingly, testosterone administration made females produce eggs with relatively large yolks, suggesting that T may mediate the trade-off between number and size of eggs. Testosterone injection resulted in elevated levels of androgen in the eggs, in contrast to control clutches, which showed a decreasing pattern of androgen concentration along the laying sequence. We conclude that high androgen investment in eggs may be limited by physiological requirements of the ovulatory process. 相似文献

Age-related differences in plumage characteristics of birds can be the result of differential survival of more ornamented individuals, within-individual changes in plumage attributes with age, or a combination of both. In this study, we investigated age-class related differences in plumage attributes of male tree swallows Tachycineta bicolor by performing both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. Male tree swallows in their first breeding season do not display delayed plumage maturation, and possess, like experienced breeders, metallic green to metallic blue iridescent plumage on their dorsal surface. Our results showed that, at the population level, older males were brighter and reflected light maximally at shorter wavelengths (i.e. were more blue). Differences in plumage brightness were most likely caused by changes within individuals as males increased in brightness between the first time they were captured and the subsequent year. Differences in hue, however, were not due to within-individual changes, but rather appear to be the result of greener individuals having lower survival and/or nest site fidelity. Indeed, relatively dull, greener birds had a lower probability of being recaptured the subsequent year. In contrast, we found that if birds captured in their first year as breeding adults were relatively bright, hue was not related to the probability of recapture. These results suggest that plumage attributes in male tree swallows have the potential of being honest signals of quality. Furthermore, plumage brightness and plumage hue might signal different aspects of male quality in this species. 相似文献

Various doses of testosterone propionate (TP) were administered for 10 days to refractory male redheaded buntings exposed to 15L:9D in last week of June, shortly before the onset of molt, to determine the effect of exogenous male hormone on the testes, body weight and plumage regeneration in photorefractory birds. While 5-, 10-, or 25 micrograms of TP bird-1 day-1 did not affect the testes, body weight or feather regeneration, testicular growth was stimulated but body weight declined and plumage regeneration prevented in birds that received 150- or 250 micrograms of TP bird-1 day-1. In contrast, a 50 micrograms treatment, although unable to induce the growth of the testes, caused loss in body weight and feather regeneration. Also, a 25 micrograms dose of TP administered to photostimulated birds induced complete testicular atrophy. These results suggests that testosterone exerts dose-dependent effects on the testes, body weight and plumage regeneration in buntings. A positive correlation is found between the amount of hormone and the testes growth, while the increasing amount of hormone has negative effect on the body weight and regeneration of feathers. 相似文献

Carotenoid plumage hue and chroma signal different aspects of individual and habitat quality in tits
We hypothesized that Blue Tits Cyanistes caeruleus and Great Tits Parus major from low quality habitat (small woods) would have less yellow ventral plumage than those from high quality habitat (large woods) because they moult faster and/or their diet contains fewer carotenoids. They moult faster because they moult later in the season and are subject to more rapidly shortening daylengths. We tested this using a database of the plumage coloration (chroma, hue and lightness) of birds breeding in woods of different sizes, by manipulating the speed of moult in captive Blue Tits, and by counting the abundance and size of caterpillars (the major source of dietary carotenoids) in the diet of nestlings. In accordance with our hypothesis, juveniles of both species (which moult about three weeks later than adults) were about 8% less saturated in colour (lower chroma) than adults, but there was no significant difference in chroma between habitats. However, both species did differ significantly in hue between large and small woods. Blue Tits forced to moult faster in captivity, at a rate similar to that caused by a month's delay in the start of moult, had yellow flank feathers that were 32% less saturated in colour than those allowed to moult more slowly. Blue Tit nestlings in large woods consumed 47% more caterpillar flesh (per gram of faecal material voided) than those in small woods, and Great Tit pulli 81% more. When habitat effects were controlled for in ANOVAs, Blue Tits mated assortatively on the basis of flank hue and Great Tits on the basis of flank lightness. Flank colour therefore has the capacity to provide information about the potential quality of both habitats, and individual birds, to potential colonists and sexual partners. 相似文献

It has been proposed that mate preferences by female Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca differ between southern (Iberian) and northern (Scandinavian) European populations. Whereas the size of the white forehead patch, but not plumage colour, has been reported to be a sexually selected trait in the former, only plumage darkness apparently acts as an ornament in the latter. In addition, northern male Pied Flycatchers become darker with age, a trend not detected until the present study in southern birds. Here we show that in an Iberian population of Pied Flycatchers breeding only a few tens of kilometres from previously studied populations, plumage darkness is associated with mating success and increases with age, whereas the size of the white forehead patch is not related to mating success and is only weakly correlated with age, trends similar to those reported for Scandinavian rather than other Iberian Pied Flycatcher populations. This represents a case of variation in sexually selected traits between geographically close populations of Pied Flycatchers that cannot be explained by sympatry with closely related species. It is proposed that differences in the identity and abundance of environmental stressors may be the cause of this regional variation in sexually selected traits. 相似文献

Persistently high testosterone levels are believed to be costly to males due to their negative effect on body condition. However, this assumption could not be validated when we analysed birds isolated from all social interactions. The hypothesis was tested on birds kept in isolation in order to analyse the effects of testosterone per se, and thereby exclude the influence of social interactions. Adult male yellow-legged gulls (Larus cachinnans) were captured, and after a period of adjustment, some individuals were subcutaneously implanted with testosterone, while the rest were used as controls. The gulls received ad libitum food for 10 days and were then fasted for 4 days. Thyroid hormones, body-mass change, daily food intake, hematocrit and several plasma biochemical parameters were analysed. Treated (T)-males maintained constant levels of plasma total protein throughout the experiment, whilst control (C)-males showed a decrease. We did not find any other differences between groups for the other variables analysed. Since the implanted birds sustained high testosterone levels for a number of days, any cost to body condition would have been revealed if these costs levels were actually important. Our results do not support the hypothesis that a reduction in body condition can be directly produced by plasma testosterone, although total protein changes do suggest different anabolic patterns in testosterone-treated gulls. 相似文献

Serum prostaglandin levels are influenced by testosterone. To test the hypothesis that the effect of testosterone is mediated through the prostate gland, testosterone was given acutely to intact and to prostatectomized male dogs. Intact dogs responded to testosterone with an abrupt, transient rise in plasma PGE2 levels; prostatectomized dogs did not respond. We conclude that testosterone has an acute effect on the prostate gland which results in release of PGE2 into the blood stream. 相似文献

The effects of cortisol and testosterone on renal function in male Antechinus stuartii (Marsupialia)

Seasonal changes in the physiology of Antechinus stuartii result in complete male mortality after mating. The most important endocrine changes in males are large rises in plasma testosterone
and cortisol concentrations. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in males declines coincident with high plasma testosterone and
cortisol. In the present study GFRs were measured in males captured in May (when endogenous plasma testosterone and cortisol
levels are low) and given depot injections of either saline, testosterone-only, cortisol-only or testosterone plus cortisol
at doses designed to mimic plasma levels during the mating period. GFR decreased significantly with testosterone injection,
independent of cortisol treatment. Urinary concentrations of sodium and chloride, and osmolality decreased significantly with
cortisol treatment, although the addition of testosterone reversed the effect. Total urinary excretion of electrolytes was
similar between groups. Plasma potassium levels significantly increased in testosterone plus cortisol treated males. Plasma
sodium levels significantly increased and plasma chloride significantly decreased in all groups treated with cortisol. Water
consumption significantly increased in all cortisol-treated males and food consumption significantly increased in all testosterone-treated
males. The seasonal renal functional changes observed in A. stuartii were mimicked by testosterone administration.

Male rats were androgenized on the third postnatal day by a single injection of 1 mg testosterone propionate. The in vitro metabolism of [4-14C]testosterone by pituitary and hypothalamus homogenates was investigated at the age of 90 days. The pituitary and hypothalamus homogenates from control and neonatally androgenized animals converted [4-14C]testosterone to the same metabolites, mainly 5 alpha-reduced derivatives; the quantitative yield of 5 alpha-reduced metabolites was much higher in the pituitary homogenates of androgenized rats. The hypothalamic homogenates showed no differences. In the androgenized rats a very significant increase of the plasma FSH levels was measured while the LH levels were also augmented. The plasma levels of testosterone were not different from the values in control rats, notwithstanding a 25% reduction in testes weight. The present experiments appear to indicate that the neonatal androgenization results in an accentuation of the sexual dimorphism which normally exists in the pituitary of adult rats for the 5 alpha-reductase activity. 相似文献

The development of plumage polymorphism in male Madagascar paradise flycatcher Terpsiphone mutata (Linnaeus, 1766) was investigated in north‐western Madagascar. Four distinct morphs were observed, namely, white‐coloured with long tails (WL), rufous‐coloured with long tails (RL), rufous‐coloured with tails of middle length (RM), and rufous‐coloured with short tails (RS). Females were rufous and had short tails. Indivudual males were marked and re‐observed during 1994–98. RS males changed to RM in the following seasons. Among RM males, some individuals retained RM, others changed to RL or WL. RM males which changed to WL in the next season had possessed white patches on their belly, whereas RM males which changed to RL had not had such patches. Neither WL nor RL males changed their morphs. Nestlings were rufous regardless of their father's morph. One nestling changed to RS in the next season. From these results and the difference of body size among four morphs, it is deduced that RS males are one year old, and change to RM males in the next season. RM males change to RL or WL males after one or two years. RL and WL are two stable terminal plumages, and they may be genetically determined morphs. 相似文献

Stimulatory and inhibitory effects of testosterone on testes in Atlantic salmon male parr 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Immature 1-year-old Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr were implanted with Silastic capsules of different sizes filled with testosterone (T). Testosterone had both positive and negative effects on testicular weights, spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis. The positive effects: higher incidence of males with enlarged gonads, spermiation, and high plasma levels of 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) and 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20β-P), were most pronounced in males treated with small T capsules. The negative effects: suppression of gonadal development and depressed plasma levels of 11-KT and 17,20β-P compared with mature controls, were most evident in fish treated with large T capsules. 相似文献

Context-dependent effects of castration and testosterone treatment on song in male European starlings 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Most seasonally breeding songbirds display dramatic seasonal fluctuations in plasma testosterone (T) levels and mate attraction behaviors, including song. However, males of some songbird species, such as the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), continue to sing at high levels after the breeding season, when T levels are basal. In male starlings song during the breeding season functions mainly to attract mates, whereas song during the nonbreeding season appears unrelated to reproduction. This suggests that song produced in a context unrelated to female courtship, unlike song directed toward females, is not regulated by plasma T. In captive males housed in large outdoor aviaries we explored the relationship between plasma T and song produced during the breeding season within and outside a courtship context. This was achieved by determining the effects of castration and subsequent T treatment on song and mate attraction behaviors in both the presence and the absence of a female. Compared to intact males, castrated males did not show reduced song activity in the absence of a female for at least 6 months after the operation, strongly suggesting that the expression of noncourtship song is not regulated by plasma T. Likewise, we found that experimentally elevating T levels in castrated males did not affect noncourtship song rates. However, control castrated males receiving empty implants tended to show reduced noncourtship song rates after implantation. This may have been due to a suppressive effect caused by the presence of the T-implanted castrated males in the same aviary. In contrast, courtship singing was clearly controlled by plasma T: it was abolished by castration and restored by subsequent T replacement when males were housed both individually and in a group situation. High plasma levels of T also appeared necessary for the activation of three other behavioral traits critical for mate attraction, namely, nesthole occupancy, spending time (singing) in a nesthole, and carrying green nesting material into a nesthole. 相似文献

Prezant, David J., Manoj L. Karwa, Helen H. Kim, DianeMaggiore, Virginia Chung, and David E. Valentine. Short- and long-term effects of testosterone on diaphragm in castrated and normalmale rats. J. Appl. Physiol. 82(1):134-143, 1997.The effects of short- and long-term testosteroneabsence or treatment on the diaphragm were studied in castrated andsexually normal male rats. Compared with control rats (untreated normalmales), testosterone absence or treatment did not significantly affect costal weight. In untreated castrated males, there were significant decreases in specific forces, type II fiber cross-sectional area, andmyosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform 2B after 2.5 wk. In castrated malesthat received testosterone, there were significant increases inspecific forces, type II total fiber proportional area, and relativeexpression of all adult diaphragm fast MHC isoforms(MHC-2all) after 2.5 wk. In normal males thatreceived testosterone, the only significant finding was an increase inMHC-2B after 2.5 wk. Across all groups, there was close correlationbetween increases in maximum tetanic forces and MHC-2all.Changes in diaphragm function and composition were closely related tochanges in serum testosterone levels at 2.5 wk. The lack of significantchange in diaphragm function at 10 wk occurred despite changes in serumtestosterone levels and diaphragm composition similar to those at 2.5 wk. These findings support our hypothesis that the effects oftestosterone are dependent on basal circulating androgen levels andstudy duration. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. The ability to age individual birds visually in the field based on plumage variation could provide important demographic and biogeographical information. We describe an approach to infer ages from a distribution of plumage scores of free-ranging male Kirtland's Warblers ( Dendroica kirtlandii ). We assigned ages to males using a scoring scheme (0–12 points) based on variation in plumage coloration, brightness, and contrast on three dorsal and three ventral body regions presumed to be age-related. The distribution of total additive plumage scores for 875 breeding males was normally distributed, indicating no distinct age classes. Thus, we developed provisional plumage-age classes of second year (SY) and after second-year (ASY), and compared them to the total plumage scores of a smaller subsample of known age ( N = 92) and minimum age ( N = 143) males. Plumage scores of known-age male Kirtland's Warblers increased nonlinearly with age ( r s = 0.67), but with some overlap. The median plumage score for SY males (median = 5.0) was significantly lower than for third-year (TY) males (median = 7.0) and after third-year (3 year and older) males (median = 8.0), indicating that the plumage of male Kirtland's Warblers becomes more distinctive and brighter with age. Linear discriminant function analysis differentiated ASY male Kirtland's Warbler from SY males with 78.3% accuracy. Investigators could use the distribution of plumage scores and approximate age structures to document changes in male age structure during colonization, use, and abandonment of habitats by Kirtland's Warblers or other species that occupy early successional habitats. Aging free-ranging birds based on a plumage scoring scheme may be especially critical for demographic studies of less-studied species where it is unlikely that a banding program will be initiated, but where plumage-age inferences or management decisions must be made. 相似文献
