To study their thermal responses to climatic stress, we implanted seven greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) with intra-abdominal, brain, carotid, and subcutaneous temperature data loggers, as well as an activity logger. Each animal was also equipped with a collar holding a miniature black globe thermometer, which we used to assess thermoregulatory behavior. The kudu ranged freely within succulent thicket vegetation of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The kudu spontaneously developed a bacterial pneumonia and consequent fever that lasted between 6 and 10 days. The fever was characterized by a significant increase in mean 24-h abdominal temperature from 38.9 +/- 0.2 degrees C to 40.2 +/- 0.4 degrees C (means +/- SD, t(6) = 11.01, P < 0.0001), although the amplitude of body temperature rhythm remained unchanged (t(6) = 1.18, P = 0.28). Six of the kudu chose warmer microclimates during the fever than when afebrile (P < 0.0001). Despite the selection of a warmer environment, on the first day of fever, the abdominal-subcutaneous temperature difference was significantly higher than on afebrile days (t(5) = 3.06, P = 0.028), indicating vasoconstriction. Some kudu displayed increased frequency of selective brain cooling during the fever, which would have inhibited evaporative heat loss and increased febrile body temperatures, without increasing the metabolic maintenance costs of high body temperatures. Average daily activity during the fever decreased to 60% of afebrile activity (t(6) = 3.46, P = 0.014). We therefore have recorded quantitative evidence for autonomic and behavioral fever, as well as sickness behavior, in the form of decreased activity, in a free-living ungulate species.  相似文献

Long-acting neuroleptics commonly are used in wildlife management to decrease stress-related mortality in wild animals, but with possible effects on thermoregulation, which may contribute to residual morbidity and mortality. We investigated the effects of haloperidol (0.01, 0.1, 1 mg kg(-1), n=4), zuclopenthixol (0.1, 1, 10 mg kg(-1), n=4) and perphenazine (0.1, 1, 10 mg kg(-1), n=8), as well as control injections of sunflower oil, on body temperature and physical activity of laboratory goats under hot, cold and thermoneutral ambient temperatures. Implanted data loggers continuously recorded abdominal temperature, and data loggers attached externally on the foreleg recorded movement of unrestrained goats, in a climatic chamber at 35 degrees C, 10 degrees C and 22 degrees C. Cycling ambient temperature between 35 degrees C in daytime and 10 degrees C at night time caused a significant increase in amplitude of the circadian rhythm of body temperature in goats given sunflower oil (P=0.0012, unpaired t-test, n=8), but the administration of zuclopenthixol or perphenazine did not affect this change in amplitude (P>0.05, two-way ANOVA, n=4). Mean daily body temperature after administration of zuclopenthixol or perphenazine, and mean daily activity after zuclopenthixol administration, were not significantly different to those after control injections, at any ambient temperature, for the expected duration of drug activity (all P>0.05, two-way ANOVA, n=4). Thermal response indices, and mean activity, during heat, cold or thermoneutral exposure, of goats for 7 h after haloperidol injection, were not significantly different, at any dose or any ambient temperature, to those following control injections (all P>0.05, repeated measures ANOVA, n=4). Long-acting neuroleptics did not impair activity or thermoregulation of goats subjected to inescapable thermal challenges.  相似文献

Thirty-two out-of-season Saanen dairy goats were involved in a 2 X 2 factorial experiment using (1) extra-light treatment (equivalent to long days) from 18 January to 19 March, at the end of gestation and the onset of lactation and (2) daily melatonin injections (equivalent to short days) from 20 March to 30 June. Hence, there were 4 groups of 8 goats each: CC (control-control), EC (extra-light-control), CM (control-melatonin) and EM (extra-light-melatonin). In each group teasers (males and androgenized females) were introduced on 30 May. Serial blood samples were taken for measurement of LH pulsatility on 30 April and 30 May. Ovarian activity was followed by plasma progesterone assay and laparoscopy. Oestrous behaviour was checked daily from 30 May to 15 July. The number of LH pulses was not modified by the treatments (extra light or melatonin). Melatonin treatment increased the basal concentration of LH (Groups CC + EC = 0.30 ng/ml; Groups CM + EM = 0.38 ng/ml; P less than 0.02) and the amplitude of pulses (Groups CC + EC = 1.24; Groups CM + EM = 2.44 ng/ml; P less than 0.02); the highest amplitude was observed for females in Group EM. Melatonin-treated females ovulated earlier after introduction of teasers than did untreated goats (Groups CM + EM = 2.3 days; Groups CC + EC = 6.1 days; P less than 0.001), but treatments did not modify ovulation rate (mean 2.1) or percentage of goats experiencing a short luteal phase.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Exercise improves glucose metabolism and delays the onset and/or reverses insulin resistance in the elderly by an unknown mechanism. In the present study, we examined the effects of exercise training on glucose metabolism, abdominal adiposity, and adipocytokines in obese elderly. Sixteen obese men and women (age = 63 +/- 1 yr, body mass index = 33.2 +/- 1.4 kg/m2) participated in a 12-wk supervised exercise program (5 days/wk, 60 min/day, treadmill/cycle ergometry at 85% of heart rate maximum). Visceral fat (VF), subcutaneous fat, and total abdominal fat were measured by computed tomography. Fat mass and fat-free mass were assessed by hydrostatic weighing. An oral glucose tolerance test was used to determine changes in insulin resistance. Exercise training increased maximal oxygen consumption (21.3 +/- 0.8 vs. 24.3 +/- 1.0 ml.kg(-1).min(-1), P < 0.0001), decreased body weight (P < 0.0001) and fat mass (P < 0.001), while fat-free mass was not altered (P > 0.05). VF (176 +/- 20 vs. 136 +/- 17 cm2, P < 0.0001), subcutaneous fat (351 +/- 34 vs. 305 +/- 28 cm2, P < 0.03), and total abdominal fat (525 +/- 40 vs. 443 +/- 34 cm2, P < 0.003) were reduced through training. Circulating leptin was lower (P < 0.003) after training, but total adiponectin and tumor necrosis factor-alpha remained unchanged. Insulin resistance was reversed by exercise (40.1 +/- 7.7 vs. 27.6 +/- 5.6 units, P < 0.01) and correlated with changes in VF (r = 0.66, P < 0.01) and maximal oxygen consumption (r = -0.48, P < 0.05) but not adipocytokines. VF loss after aerobic exercise training improves glucose metabolism and is associated with the reversal of insulin resistance in older obese men and women.  相似文献

The effects of modafinil on heat thermoregulatory responses were studied in 10 male subjects submitted to a sweating test after taking 200 mg of modafinil or placebo. Sweating tests were performed in a hot climatic chamber (45 degrees C, relative humidity <15%, wind speed = 0.8 m x s(-1), duration 1.5 h). Body temperatures (rectal (Tre) and 10 skin temperatures (Tsk)), sweat rate, and metabolic heat production (M) were studied as well as heart rate (HR). Results showed that modafinil induced at the end of the sweating test higher body temperatures increases (0.50 +/- 0.04 versus 0.24 +/- 0.05 degrees C (P < 0.01) for deltaTre and 3.64 +/- 0.16 versus 3.32 +/- 0.16 degrees C (P < 0.05) for deltaTsk (mean skin temperature)) and a decrease in sweating rate throughout the heat exposure (P < 0.05) without change in M, leading to a higher body heat storage (P < 0.05). AHR was also increased, especially at the end of the sweating test (17.95 +/- 1.49 versus 12.52 +/- 1.24 beats/min (P < 0.01)). In conclusion, modafinil induced a slight hyperthermic effect during passive dry heat exposure related to a lower sweat rate, probably by its action on the central nervous system, and this could impair heat tolerance.  相似文献

Seven purebred Toggenburg fetuses in four does, six purebred Nubian fetuses in four does, and eight Angora fetuses in six does were repeatedly measured using transabdominal real-time ultrasound with a 5 MH(z) linear-array transducer from 40 d to 100 d gestational age (GA) and their biparietal diameters (BPD) were determined. For Toggenburg goats the GA = 27.9 + 1.64 BPD; for Nubian goats the GA = 26.8 + 1.74 BPD; for Angora goats the GA = 28.6 + 1.77 BPD. The breed differences in GA for equal BPD are insignificant at the beginning of the second trimester but are +3 d for Nubian and +6 d for Angora fetuses by the end of the second trimester.  相似文献

Alpine, Angora and Nubian kids, 6–8 months old and weighing 15–25 kg were grazed on high quality (wheat) or low quality pasture (dormant bermudagrass) for 54 d to evaluate breed differences and metabolic responses. Each kid on the bermudagrass pasture also received daily 200 g of a 24% CP supplement to stimulate intake.

Wheat pasture had an in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of 78 vs. 35% for the Bermuda pasture. Goats gained 50 g/d on wheat pasture vs. 10 g/d on Bermuda pasture (P<0.02). Angora kids gained the least weight on Bermuda (−8 g/d; P<0.05) and most on wheat pasture (62 g/d; P<0.05). Mohair production was greater for Angora goats on wheat pasture compared to those on Bermuda pastures (9.9 vs. 6.2 g/100 cm2; P<0.05). Angora goats on Bermuda pastures had elevated levels of NEFA and plasma ammonia, and reduced levels of plasma urea N, consistent with catabolism of body tissue stores. Angora goats tended to have lower concentration of rumen VFA and ammonia. Angora goats appear to be more sensitive to inanition as compared to Alpine and Nubian goats. Presumably, their obligate nutrient requirements for hair production limits their ability to adapt, making them more vulnerable to nutritional stress.  相似文献

This study examined whether charting daily weight patterns can predict weight regain in obese patients. The subjects were 98 moderately obese Japanese women aged 23 to 66 years who were obliged to precisely record their daily weights during the initial 4-month education period, but not thereafter. The patients were followed up at 8, 12, and 16 months. Abdominal fat areas and blood samples were assessed in the outpatient clinic at 0, 4, and 16 months. The standard deviations (SDs) of the differences in body weight between "after waking up" and "after breakfast" (SDa), "after dinner" (SDb), and "before going to bed" (SDc) were calculated, which were parameters reflecting the fluctuations in the daily weight patterns during the first 4 months. SDc, but not SDa or SDb, was correlated positively with weight regain at 8, 12, and 16 months (P = 0.049, P = 0.002, and P = 0.001, respectively). There were significant differences in temporal change in body weight and abdominal visceral fat between the small SDc group (SDc 75th percentile), but not for subcutaneous abdominal fat or the serum concentrations of glucose, insulin, or lipids. The results indicate that fluctuation of body weight immediately before going to bed is useful for predicting the rebound in body weight.  相似文献

Infrared thermography has become a useful tool to assess surface temperatures of animals for thermoregulatory research. However, surface temperatures are an endpoint along the body's core-shell temperature gradient. Skin and fur are the peripheral tissues most exposed to ambient thermal conditions and are known to serve as thermosensors that initiate thermoregulatory responses. Yet relatively little is known about how surface temperatures of wild mammals measured by infrared thermography relate to subcutaneous temperatures. Moreover, this relationship may differ with the degree that fur covers the body. To assess the relationship between temperatures and temperature gradients in peripheral tissues between furred and bare areas, we collected data from wild mantled howling monkeys (Alouatta palliata) in Costa Rica. We used infrared thermography to measure surface temperatures of the furred dorsum and bare facial areas of the body, recorded concurrent subcutaneous temperatures in the dorsum, and measured ambient thermal conditions via a weather station. Temperature gradients through cutaneous tissues (subcutaneous-surface temperature) and surface temperature gradients (surface-ambient temperature) were calculated. Our results indicate that there are differences in temperatures and temperature gradients in furred versus bare areas of mantled howlers. Under natural thermal conditions experienced by wild animals, the bare facial areas were warmer than temperatures in the furred dorsum, and cutaneous temperature gradients in the face were more variable than the dorsum, consistent with these bare areas acting as thermal windows. Cutaneous temperature gradients in the dorsum were more closely linked to subcutaneous temperatures, while facial temperature gradients were more heavily influenced by ambient conditions. These findings indicate that despite the insulative properties of fur, for mantled howling monkeys surface temperatures of furred areas still demonstrate a relationship with subcutaneous temperatures. Given that most mammals possess dense fur, this provides insight for using infrared imaging in thermoregulatory studies of wild animals lacking bare skin.  相似文献

Since human thermoregulation at rest is altered by cold exposure, it was hypothesized that physical training under cold conditions would alter thermoregulation. Three groups (n = 8) of male subjects (mean age 24.3 +/- 0.9 years) were evaluated: group T (interval training at 21 degrees C), group CT (interval training at 1 degrees C), and group C (no training, equivalent exposure to 1 degrees C). Each group was submitted, before and after 4 weeks of interval training (5 d/week), to a cold air test at rest (SCAT) (dry bulb temperature (Tdb) = 1 degrees C) for a 2-h period for evaluation of the thermoregulatory responses. During SCAT, after the training/acclimation period, group T exhibited a higher rectal temperature (Tre) (P < 0.05) without significant change in mean skin temperature (Tsk) whereas metabolic heat production (M) was higher at the beginning of the SCAT (P < 0.05). For group CT, no thermoregulatory change was observed. Group C showed a lower Tre (P < 0.05) without significant change in either Tsk or in M, suggesting the development of a hypothermic general cold adaptation. This study showed, first, that the cold thermoregulatory responses induced by an interval training differed following the climatic conditions of the training and, second, that this training performed in the cold prevented the development of a general cold adaptation.  相似文献

The purpose of our study was to understand the relationship between the components of the three-process model of sleepiness regulation (homeostatic, circadian, and sleep inertia) and the thermoregulatory system. This was achieved by comparing the impact of a 40-h sleep deprivation vs. a 40-h multiple nap paradigm (10 cycles with 150/75 min wakefulness/sleep episodes) on distal and proximal skin temperatures, core body temperature (CBT), melatonin secretion, subjective sleepiness, and nocturnal sleep EEG slow-wave activity in eight healthy young men in a "controlled posture" protocol. The main finding of the study was that accumulation of sleep pressure increased subjective sleepiness and slow-wave activity during the succeeding recovery night but did not influence the thermoregulatory system as measured by distal, proximal, and CBT. The circadian rhythm of sleepiness (and proximal temperature) was significantly correlated and phase locked with CBT, whereas distal temperature and melatonin secretion were phase advanced (by 113 +/- 28 and 130 +/- 30 min, respectively; both P < 0.005). This provides evidence for a primary role of distal vasodilatation in the circadian regulation of CBT and its relationship with sleepiness. Specific thermoregulatory changes occur at lights off and on. After lights off, skin temperatures increased and were most pronounced for distal; after lights on, the converse occurred. The decay in distal temperature (vasoconstriction) was significantly correlated with the disappearance of sleep inertia. These effects showed minor and nonsignificant circadian modulation. In summary, the thermoregulatory system seems to be independent of the sleep homeostat, but the circadian modulation of sleepiness and sleep inertia is clearly associated with thermoregulatory changes.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminthiasis in ruminants in an irrigated area of lower Punjab (Pakistan). For this purpose, 100 faecal samples were collected from sheep, goats, cattle and buffaloes. Parasitological procedures including direct and indirect methods (sedimentation and floatation) and coproculture were used for the identification of helminths. The overall prevalence of helminthiasis was 51% in cattle, 47% in buffaloes, 62% in sheep and 52% in goats, with nematodes being the most common helminths. The prevalence of helminths was higher in young animals compared with adults in cattle (P < 0.0001), buffaloes (P < 0.0001), sheep (P < 0.059) and goats (P = 0.010). The prevalence of different species of helminths also varied in different age groups, with Toxocara vitulorum being higher in calves than adults both in cattle (P = 0.017) and buffaloes (P < 0.0001). Sex-wise prevalence of helminths was higher in males than females for buffaloes (P < 0.0001) and sheep (P = 0.014) in contrast to cattle and goats.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity is a key trait of successful pest species, and may increase the ability to cope with higher, more variable temperatures under climate change. We investigate the plasticity of preferred temperature in a widespread agricultural pest, the wingless grasshopper (Phaulacridium vittatum). Preferred temperature is a measure of thermoregulatory behaviour through habitat selection. It is influenced by melanism, which affects body temperature by determining the amount of radiation absorbed by the body. First we demonstrate that body temperature and preferred temperature in P. vittatum is influenced by melanism, by comparing the preferred temperature of the colour morphs in laboratory thermal gradients and field body temperatures in natural populations. We then test whether preferred temperature changes in response to changes in body temperature, by determining preferred temperature before and after manipulation of melanism by painting. When melanism was manipulated experimentally in live grasshoppers, preferred temperature changed to reflect the thermal qualities of the new colour. The preferred temperature of light grasshoppers increased after they were painted black, and decreased after being painted white. Similarly, dark individuals that were painted white behaved like a light individual, maintaining a lower body temperature. Preferred temperature in P.vittatum is a plastic thermoregulatory response to ambient temperature, mediated by the influence of melanism on body temperature.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine, for goats, the effects of daily doses of GnRH antagonist on ovarian endocrine and follicular function. Ten does were given 45 mg FGA intravaginal sponges and then five were treated with daily injections of 0.5mg of the GnRH antagonist Teverelix for 11 days from 2 days after the day of sponge insertion, while five does acted as controls. Pituitary activity was monitored by measuring plasma FSH and LH daily from 2 days before the first GnRH injection to Day 12. Follicular activity was determined by ultrasonographic monitoring and by assessing plasma inhibin A levels during the same period. In treated does, the FSH levels decreased linearly (0.8 +/- 0.1 ng/ml to 0.5 +/- 0.1 ng/ml, P < 0.01) and remained lower than the mean concentration in control goats (0.8 +/- 0.1 ng/ml, P < 0.005). LH levels were also lower during the period of antagonist treatment (0.6 +/- 0.2 ng/ml versus 0.4 +/- 0.1 ng/ml, P < 0.0005). During GnRH antagonist treatment, there was a significant decrease in the number of large follicles (> or = 6 mm) from Day 3 of treatment (1.2 +/- 0.6, P < 0.0001), with no large follicles from Day 9. The number of medium follicles (4-5 mm in size) also decrease during the period of treatment (4.2 +/- 0.7 to 1.0 +/- 0.6, P < 0.0001), leading to a significant decrease in inhibin A levels when compared to the control (143.7 +/- 31.3 pg/ml versus 65.2 +/- 19.1 pg/ml, P < 0.00005). In contrast, the number of small follicles (2-3 mm) increased in treated goats from Day 4 of treatment (9.6 +/- 2.9 to 20.2 +/- 6.3, P < 0.005). Such data indicate that GnRH antagonist reduced plasma levels of FSH and LH with suppression of the growth of large dominant ovarian follicles and a two-fold increase in number of smaller follicles. The results confirm that GnRH antagonist treatment can be used in goats to control gonadotrophin secretion and ovarian follicle growth in superovulatory regimes.  相似文献

Intensive livestock grazing can largely deplete the natural fodder resources in semi-arid, subtropical highlands and together with the low nutritional quality of the pasture vegetation limit the growth and production of grazing animals. To evaluate the contribution of homestead feeding of grazing goats to rangeland conservation and animal nutrition, two researcher-managed on-farm trials were conducted in a mountain oasis of Northern Oman. Goats' feed intake on pasture in response to four rations containing different levels of locally available green fodder and concentrate feeds was determined in six male goats each (35 ± 10.2 kg body weight (BW)). Total feed intake was estimated using titanium dioxide as external fecal marker as well as the diet organic matter (OM) digestibility derived from fecal crude protein concentration. The nutritional quality of selected fodder plants on pasture was analyzed to determine the animals' nutrient and energy intake during grazing. The pasture vegetation accounted for 0.46 to 0.65 of the goats' total OM intake (87 to 107 g/kg0.75 BW), underlining the importance of this fodder resource for the husbandry system. However, metabolizable energy (7.2 MJ/kg OM) and phosphorus concentrations (1.4 g/kg OM) in the consumed pasture plants were low. Homestead feeding of nutrient and energy-rich by-products of the national fishery and date palm cultivation to grazing goats increased their daily OM intake (R2 = 0.36; P = 0.005) and covered their requirements for growth and production. While the OM intake on pasture was highest in animals fed a concentrate-based diet (P = 0.003), the daily intake of 21 g OM/kg0.75 BW of cultivated green fodder reduced the animals' feed intake on pasture (R2 = 0.44; P = 0.001). Adjusting homestead supplementation with locally available feedstuffs to the requirements of individual goats and to the nutritional quality of the pasture vegetation improves animal performance and eases the grazing pressure exerted on the natural vegetation. This management strategy therefore appears to be a valuable alternative to intensive livestock feeding in zero-grazing systems and may contribute to sustainable livestock production in ecologically fragile, semi-arid mountain regions.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine whether the reproductive seasonality of local male goats from subtropical Mexico (26 degrees N) is controlled by photoperiod. The control group (n = 7) remained in an open shed under natural daylight. The two experimental groups (n = 6 each) were placed in light-proof buildings and exposed for 2 years (yr) to alternations of 3 months (mo) of long days and 3 mo of short days. One group was first exposed to long days and the other one to short days. Body and testicular weights were determined every 2 wk. Blood samples were obtained weekly to determine testosterone plasma concentrations. In the control group, the body weight exhibited variations (P < 0.0001) and it increased during the non-breeding season. In both treated groups, long days stimulated weight gain and short days inhibited it (P < 0.0001). In the control group, testicular weight displayed variations (P < 0.0001), and high values were registered in June. In the treated groups, a testicular weight reduction occurred 6-9 mo after the onset of the study. Afterwards, the changes in testicular size varied according to daylength (P < 0.01). The pattern of plasma testosterone concentration in the control group varied over the study (P < 0.0001) and the levels were higher from May-June to November. In both treated groups, the changes in testosterone secretion occurred according to photoperiod changes (P < 0.0001). Short days enhanced testosterone secretion one photoperiodic cycle after the onset of the study and long days inhibited it. Local male goats from subtropical Mexico are sensitive to photoperiodic changes and this environmental cue may control the timing of the breeding season in natural conditions.  相似文献

The study involved 120 crossbred ewes (sixty 1.5 years old animals and sixty 2.5 years old animals; initial liveweight 67.6 kg, condition score 3.7), that were mated in October. They were assigned to six treatments (two shearing treatments (shorn and unshorn) × two silage feed values (low and medium) and two extended grazed herbage allowances (1.0 and 1.8 kg dry matter (DM)/day)) designed to evaluate the effects of shearing at housing, grass silage feed value and extended-grazed herbage allowance on their performance and the performance of their progeny. Swards, which had silage harvested on 6 September, received fertiliser N (34 kg/ha) for extended (deferred) grazing between 19 December and lambing in mid-March. The herbage was allocated at DM allowances of 1.0 or 1.8 kg/ewe daily until 1 February. For the final 6 weeks of pregnancy, daily herbage DM allowances were 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.0 and 2.0 kg for weeks 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 to parturition, respectively. Two grass silages (low and medium feed value) were offered from housing on 19 December to lambing in mid-March. At housing, half the ewes were shorn whilst the remainder remained unshorn. Each ewe received 23.4 kg concentrate prior to lambing. For the extended-grazed herbage and the low and medium feed-value silages, DM concentrations were 132, 225 and 265 g/kg, and metabolisable energy (ME) concentrations were 10.0, 10.0 and 10.7 MJ/kg DM, respectively. Treatment did not alter (P > 0.05) litter size or number reared. Grass silage feed value did not significantly alter silage DM intake, or ewe and subsequent lamb performance. Increasing herbage allowance in mid-pregnancy decreased herbage utilisation (P < 0.05) and increased herbage intake (P < 0.05). Shearing increased silage intake (P < 0.05), lamb birth weight (P < 0.01) and tended to increase lamb weaning weight (P = 0.07). Relative to the housed shorn ewes, extended grazing did not alter (P > 0.05) ewe or subsequent lamb performance. It is concluded that shearing ewes at housing increased lamb birth weight due to increased silage intake probably associated with cold stress immediately post shearing and reduced heat stress in late pregnancy. Based on differences in lamb weight at weaning 0.8 kg of grass silage DM intake had the same feed value as a daily extended herbage DM allowance of 1.8 kg per ewe throughout the study. Neither silage feed value nor herbage allowance in mid-pregnancy affected lamb birth weight or subsequent growth rate.  相似文献

We inadvertently subjected a group of goats to 5 mo of cold exposure (mean minimum temperature less than -13 degrees C) during an experiment designed to examine the effects of training by daily running on one member of each sibling pair. During the three coldest months, the sedentary but cold-exposed goats experienced a 34% increase in maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2 max), P < 0.01) and a 29% increase in running speed at maximal (P < 0.05). When temperatures increased in the spring, both oxygen uptake and running speed decreased. We interpret these findings as evidence that cold is a sufficient stimulus to invoke the development of aerobic structures in muscle and that these structures subsequently can be utilized for the novel task of running. When the experiment was subsequently repeated without the cold exposure, running speed and VO(2 max) of trained animals increased less than in either group of cold-exposed animals. However, the cost of transport of these warm runners was lower than either group of cold-exposed animals (from 13-19%, P < 0. 0001). Thus, although aerobic capacity was increased with acclimation to severe winter weather, cold-acclimated goats operated with lower efficiency during locomotion.  相似文献

Two pairs of primers (P1 and P2) were designed to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms of exon 2 and intron 2 of bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) gene in both high fecundity breed (Jining Grey goat) and low fecundity breeds (Boer, Angora and Inner Mongolia Cashmere goats) by single strand conformation polymorphism. Results showed that no polymorphism was detected for exon 2 (primer P1) of BMP4 gene in four goat breeds. For intron 2 (primer P2), three genotypes (AA, AB and BB) were detected in Jining Grey and Inner Mongolia Cashmere goats, two genotypes (AB and BB) in Angora goats, and only one genotype (AA) in Boer goats. Sequencing revealed one mutation (2203G>A) of BMP4 gene in the genotype BB in comparison to the genotype AA. The differences of litter size between AA, AB and BB genotypes were not significant (P > 0.05) in Jining Grey goats. A pair of primer (P3) was designed to detect polymorphism in the 3' flanking region of BMP4 gene that contained dinucleotide repeated sequence (CA) in the four goat breeds by microsatellite analysis. For primer P3, three genotypes (CC, CD and DD) were detected in four goat breeds. Sequencing revealed one more CA dinucleotide in genotype DD than in genotype CC. The Jining Grey does with genotype CC had 0.55 (P < 0.05) or 0.72 (P < 0.05) kids more than those with genotype CD or DD. These results preliminarily indicated that allele C of BMP4 gene is a potential DNA marker for improving litter size in goats.  相似文献

In order to cope with the seasonal variations in ambient temperature and food availability in the natural habitat, gray mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus) exhibit adaptive energy-saving mechanisms similar to those in hibernating species with seasonal and daily heterothermia. To determine thermoregulatory responses, via telemetry we recorded body temperature and locomotor activity variations during the breeding season in three captive male mouse lemurs kept at ambient temperatures (Ta) ranging from 18° to 34°C. Rhythms in body temperature and locomotor activity were clearly exhibited regardless of ambient temperature. As a increased, mean body temperature increased from 36.5 ± 0.1°C to 37.6 ± 0.3°C, with significant change in the amplitude of the body temperature rhythm when a rose above 28°C. Effects of a were mostly due to changes in the fall in body temperature occurring daily at the beginning of the light phase when the subjects entered diurnal sleep. The daily decrease in body temperature was not modified by exposure to ambient temperatures from 18°C to 28°C whereas it disappeared under warmer condition. Changes in locomotor activity levels only delayed the occurrence of thermoregulatory modulation. These results strongly suggest that, during the breeding season, the thermoneutral zone of mouse lemurs is close to 28°C and that the diurnal fall in body temperature could be considered as an important adaptive energy-saving mechanism adjusted to ecological constraints.  相似文献
