We studied the performance of the coccinellid Cryptolaemus montrouzieri on citrus plant species infested with orange pulvinaria scale, Pulvinaria aurantii, under controlled conditions in the laboratory. The experimental host plants were blood orange, grapefruit, lemon, pummelo and kumquat. All life history parameters indicated best performance of C. montrouzieri, when reared on P. aurantii ovisacs on the leaves of grapefruit. Pummelo, blood orange, lemon or kumquat were less suitable.

The red-striped soft scale insect Pulvinaria tenuivalvata (Newstead) (Hemiptera: Coccidae) started to infest sugarcane plants (Saccharum officinarum L.) in different districts in Egypt during the last decade. The percentage of infestation was recorded in El-Wakf area, Qena Governorate (Naghhamadi mill zone) Upper Egypt in some fields. There are three levels of infestation, low, intermediate and high. From these fields, samples were selected for physical and chemical studies. The results obtained show that the stalks of infested plants decreased in weight, the sugar content (glucose and sucrose) drastically reduced and as the percentage of infestation increased the percentage of glucose and sucrose content significantly decreased. The primary and secondary humidity and the cellulose content also increased in the healthy plants compared to the infested ones. All the physical character of the infested plants was significantly affected in comparison with the healthy ones.

The citrus cottony scale, Pulvinaria aurantii Cock. (Hem.: Coccidae) is one of the most important citrus pests in Iran. This study investigated the toxicity and synergistic effects of organophosphorous insecticides (Malathion, Chlorpyrifos, Buprofezin and DG oil) on first nymphal instars of P. aurantii in the laboratory conditions (25?±?1?°C, 75?±?5% RH and 16L:8D photoperiod). The values of LC50 for Malathion, Chlorpyrifos and Buprofezin insecticides on the first nymphal instars were calculated as 76.90, 105.25 and 24.70?ppm, respectively. Also, results indicated that Buprofezin and Pyriproxifen are the most effective insecticides on first nymphal instars of P. aurantii. The values of LC50 for each insecticide without oil and in half dose along with DG oil were equal. This was an indication for synergism role of DG oil combination. The results of this study showed that DG oil not only decreases the consumption of insecticides, but also increases their efficacy.

An outbreak of cottony maple scale,Pulvinaria innumerabilis (Rathvon) was not controlled by chemical treatments, but large numbers of the coccinellid,Hyperaspis signata (Say), almost eliminated the scale in the succeding year.

Rutaraphes shikokuensis gen. et sp. nov. is described from Shikoku, Japan. The new taxon belongs to a group of genera characterized by the lateral sutures demarcating the submentum and is most similar to Neuraphes and Scydmoraphes. Morphological structures of Rutaraphes are illustrated and possible affinities with other genera of Cyrtoscydmini are discussed. Keys to identification of Palearctic and Japanese genera of Cyrtoscydmini are given. Including Rutaraphes, 14 genera of Scydmaeninae are currently known to occur in Japan.

Ants can disrupt the natural biological control of serious hemipteran pests by interfering with natural enemies, resulting in a change in ecosystem functioning. We focus here on interference by a highly invasive ant Pheidole megacephala on the regulation of a tree destroying hemipteran scale insect Pulvinaria urbicola on Cousine Island in the Seychelles archipelago, a tropical island ecosystem. We show how a diverse natural enemy assemblage contributes substantially to the collapse of the ant-scale mutualism following managed ant suppression. Natural enemy abundance and species richness increased significantly after ant suppression, with varying responses among the different functional guilds. Primary parasitoids coexisted with tending ants before ant suppression, but could not regulate the enormously high scale densities alone. After ant suppression, a significant increase in predators caused a collapse of the scale population. Guilds external to the mutualism were also affected, with primary parasitoids of various non-hemipteran taxa also increasing, which contributed significantly to the recovery of the community to its pre-invasion composition. Our results highlight the far-reaching and pervasive effects of the hemipteran-tending invasive ant within the natural enemy assemblage. In turn, we also illustrate the potential to restore the tropical ecosystem by encouraging an array of natural enemies through precision management of the ant.

A rust species on Calystegia soldanella in Japan has been treated as Puccinia convolvuli to date. However, morphological characteristics of specimens on C. soldanella collected from Japan are significantly different from those of specimens on other Calystegia and Convolvulus species from different areas of the world. It is proved by inoculation experiment that the rust on C. soldanella is specific to C. soldanella. Based on these results, Puccinia rust on C. soldanella from Japan is described as a new species, Puccinia calystegiae-soldanellae.

Suhpalacsa iriomotensis sp. nov. (Neuroptera: Ascalaphidae: Ascalaphinae), is described from Iriomotejima Island, Japan. This new species can be easily distinguished from other species of the genus by the unique ventrolateral prominences of the male ectoproct. This is the first record of the genus Suhpalacsa from Japan. The morphology of the male ectoproct and the monophyly of Suhpalacsa are discussed briefly.

We associated nymphs of Labiobaetis sp. G and Labiobaetis sp. Q from Japan with imagoes reared from nymphs in the field. Labiobaetis sp. G was identified with L. atrebatinus (Eaton 1870) based on characters of the reared male and female imagoes, nymphs, and eggs. We also synonymized a Taiwanese species, L. morus (Chang and Yang 1994), with L. atrebatinus. After further examination of the characters of male imagoes from Japan and Korea and nymphs from Japan and Taiwan, we found them to be correspondent to subspecies L. atrebatinus orientalis (Kluge 1983). Thus, we reerected the subspecific status of L. a. orientalis, although it had been considered not distinguishable from the nominotypical subspecies L. a. atrebatinus. Labiobaetis a. orientalis is distributed in the Russian Far East, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. We identified Labiobaetis sp. Q with L. tricolor (Tshernova 1928) based on characters of the reared male and female imagoes, nymphs, and eggs. Labiobaetis tricolor was recorded from Japan for the first time.
