The conditions for a stable polymorphism and the equilibrium gene frequency in an infinite population are compared when there is spatial or temporal environmental heterogeneity for the absolute dominance model. For temporal variation the conditions for stability are more restrictive and the equilibrium gene frequency is often at a low gene frequency. In a finite population, temporal environmental heterogeneity for the absolute dominance model was found to be quite ineffective in maintaining genetic variation and is often less effective than no selection at all. For comparison, the maximum maintenance for temporal variation is related to the overdominant model. In general, cyclic environmental variation was found to be more effective at maintaining genetic variation than where the environment varies stochastically. The importance of temporal environmental variation and the maintenance of genetic variation is discussed.  相似文献

The evolution of haploid and diploid phases of the life cycle is investigated theoretically, using a model where the relative length of haploid and diploid phases is under genetic control. The model assumes that selection occurs in both phases and that fitness in each phase is a function of the time spent in that phase. The equilibrium and stability conditions that allow for all-haploid, all-diploid, or polyphasic life cycles are considered for general survivorship functions. Types of stable life cycles possible depend on the form of the viability selection. If mortality rates are constant, either haploidy or diploidy is the only stable life cycle possible. Departures from constant mortality can give qualitatively different results. For example, when survivorship in each phase is a linear, decreasing function of the time spent in the phase, stable haploid, diploid or polyphasic life cycles are possible. The addition of genetic variation at a coevolving viability locus does not qualitatively affect the outcome with respect to the maintenance of polyphasic cycles but can lead to situations where more than one life cycle is concurrently stable. These results show that trade-offs between the advantages of being diploid and of being haploid may help explain the patterns of life cycles found in nature and that the type of selection may be critical to determining the results.  相似文献

The maintenance of genetic variation is investigated in a finite population where selection at an autosomal locus with two alleles varies temporally between two environments and the heterozygote has an intermediate fitness value. When there is additive gene action and equal selection in both environments, the autocorrelation between subsequent environments must be negative for more maintenance of genetic variation than for neutrality. The maximum maintenance occurs when there is equal selection in the two environments and the autocorrelation approaches -1.0 (for a stochastic model), or when there is short repeating cycle such as one related to seasons. Also comparison of the effects of stochastic variation in selection in finite and infinite populations is made by using Monte Carlo simulation. One situation was found where temporal environmental variation maintains genetic variation very effectively even in a small population and that is when there is evolution of dominance, i.e., the heterozygote is closer in fitness to the favored homozygote than the other homozygote. An important conclusion is that in a finite population genetic tracing of environmental change, particularly when there is a positive autocorrelation between environments or a long environmental cycle, leads to an increased loss of genetic variation making such a response undesirable in the long term, a result different from that in infinite populations.  相似文献

Hymenopteran insects (sawflies, ants, bees, and wasps) have an unusual genetic system called haplodiploidy, where parthenogenetically produced haploid eggs become males, and fertilized, diploid eggs become females. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the mechanism of such sex determination, including control at a single polymorphic locus. From experiments of mother-son mating and using a genetic marker, we show that a single multiallele locus controls sex determination in the turnip sawfly (Athalia rosae). We estimated the number of alleles at this single locus in a field population by analyzing the rate of diploid males in the field and the rate of diploid males by random crossing in the laboratory. Only one diploid male was discovered in 1306 diploid larvae collected in the field. However, the number of alleles calculated by random crossing in the laboratory was 45-50. We suggest that the effective population size may be much larger than that from the areas where we collected larvae, and that there are mechanisms for avoiding inbreeding, including protogyny, dispersion, and sperm displacement by second-mated males.  相似文献

We consider situations where repeated invasion attempts occur from a source population into a receptor population over extended periods of time. The receptor population contains two locations that provide different expected offspring numbers to invaders. There is demographic stochasticity in offspring numbers. In addition, temporal variation causes local invader fitnesses to vary. We show that effects of environmental autocorrelation on establishment success depend on spatial covariance of the receptor subpopulations. In situations with a low spatial covariance this effect is positive, whereas high spatial covariance and/or high migration probabilities between the subpopulations causes the effect to be negative. This result reconciles seemingly contradictory results from the literature concerning effects of temporal variation on population dynamics with demographic stochasticity. We study an example in the context of genetic introgression, where invasions of cultivar plant genes occur through pollen flow from a source population into wild-type receptor populations, but our results have implications in a wider range of contexts, such as the spread of exotic species, metapopulation dynamics and epidemics.  相似文献

An exact Markov chain model is formulated and computed for random mating in a haploid gamete pool. There are two versions of the gamete, and there is a finite number of diploid monoecious organisms. The founder population is given, and the subsequent generations allow a prescribed statistical distribution over different population sizes. The non-homogeneous Markov chain works on the haploid gamete level provided the probability of self-fertilization is 1/n, where n is the number of diploid individuals. Standard deviations of gamete frequencies and fixation probabilities are calculated. Effective population sizes for different population size distributions are estimated, including periodic bottlenecks.  相似文献

The relative duration of the haploid and the diploid phases during the reproductive cycle varies greatly between organisms. This paper addresses the question of the evolution of haploid, diploid, and haplo-diplontic life cycles. When the life span of haploid and diploid individuals is constant whatever their cycle, we show that the haplo-diplontic cycle has an advantage, which depends on the sex-ratio in anisogamous species and on the probability of fertilization in isogamous species. This is because meiosis and fertilization occur half as often in the haplo-diplontic cycle as in haploid or diploid cycles, for the same number of generations of individuals. This argument is demonstrated using a model which considers a genetic determination of the cycle, and fixed haploid and diploid fitnesses. The relevance of measures of fitness of haploid and diploid individuals in predicting the evolution of life cycles is discussed. Measures obtained in algae are compared with theoretical predictions.  相似文献

The impact of haploid-diploidy and the intertidal landscape on a fine-scale genetic structure was explored in a red seaweed Gracilaria gracilis. The pattern of genetic structure was compared in haploid and diploid stages at a microgeographic scale (< 5 km): a total of 280 haploid and 296 diploid individuals located in six discrete, scattered rock pools were genotyped using seven microsatellite loci. Contrary to the theoretical expectation of predominantly endogamous mating systems in haploid-diploid organisms, G. gracilis showed a clearly allogamous mating system. Although within-population allele frequencies were similar between haploids and diploids, genetic differentiation among haploids was more than twice that of diploids, suggesting that there may be a lag between migration and (local) breeding due to the long generation times in G. gracilis. Weak, but significant, population differentiation was detected in both haploids and diploids and varied with landscape features, and not with geographic distance. Using an assignment test, we establish that effective migration rates varied according to height on the shore. In this intertidal species, biased spore dispersal may occur during the transport of spores and gametes at low tide when small streams flow from high- to lower-shore pools. The longevity of both haploid and diploid free-living stages and the long generation times typical of G. gracilis populations may promote the observed pattern of high genetic diversity within populations relative to that among populations.  相似文献

Electrophoretically detectable variation in the fungus Neurospora intermedia has been surveyed among isolates from natural populations in Malaya, Papua, Australia and Florida. The principal result is a pattern of genetic variation within and between populations that is qualitatively no different than the well documented patterns for Drosophila and humans. In particular, there is a high level of genetic variation, the majority of which occurs at the level of local populations. Evidence is presented which argues that N. intermedia has a population structure analogous to that of an annual vascular plant with a high level of vegetative reproduction. Sexual reproduction appears to be a regular feature in the biology of the species. Substantial heterokaryon function seems unlikely in natural populations of N. intermedia. Theoretical considerations concerning the mechanisms underlying the observed pattern of variation most likely should be consistent with haploid selection theory. The implications of this constraint upon the theory are discussed in detail, leading to the presentation of a model based upon the concept of environmental heterogenicity. The essence of the model, which is equally applicable to haploid and diploid situations, is a shifting distribution of multiple adaptive niches among local populations such that a given population has a small net selective pressure in favor of one allele or another, depending upon its particular distribution of niches. Gene flow among neighboring populations with differing net selective pressures is postulated as the principal factor underlying intrapopulational allozyme variation.  相似文献

Organisms show great variation in ploidy level. For example, chromosome copy number varies among cells, individuals and species. One particularly widespread example of ploidy variation is found in haplodiploid taxa, wherein males are typically haploid and females are typically diploid. Despite the prevalence of haplodiploidy, the regulatory consequences of having separate haploid and diploid genomes are poorly understood. In particular, it remains unknown whether epigenetic mechanisms contribute to regulatory compensation for genome dosage. To gain greater insights into the importance of epigenetic information to ploidy compensation, we examined DNA methylation differences among diploid queen, diploid worker, haploid male and diploid male Solenopsis invicta fire ants. Surprisingly, we found that morphologically dissimilar diploid males, queens and workers were more similar to one another in terms of DNA methylation than were morphologically similar haploid and diploid males. Moreover, methylation level was positively associated with gene expression for genes that were differentially methylated in haploid and diploid castes. These data demonstrate that intragenic DNA methylation levels differ among individuals of distinct ploidy and are positively associated with levels of gene expression. Thus, these results suggest that epigenetic information may be linked to ploidy compensation in haplodiploid insects. Overall, this study suggests that epigenetic mechanisms may be important to maintaining appropriate patterns of gene regulation in biological systems that differ in genome copy number.  相似文献

This work investigates approaches to simplifying individual-based models in which the rate of disturbance depends on local densities. To this purpose, an individual-based model for a benthic population is developed that is both spatial and stochastic. With this model, three possible ways of approximating the dynamics of mean numbers are examined: a mean-field approximation that ignores space completely, a second-order approximation that represents spatial variation in terms of variances and covariances, and a patch-based approximation that retains information about the age structure of the patch population. Results show that space is important and that a temporal model relying on mean disturbance rates provides a poor approximation to the dynamics of mean numbers. It is possible, however, to represent relevant spatial variation with second-order moments, particularly when recruitment rates are low and/or when disturbances are large and weak. Even better approximations are obtained by retaining patch age information.  相似文献

Understanding the maintenance of genetic variation in the face of selection remains a key issue in evolutionary biology. One potential mechanism for the maintenance of genetic variation is opposing selection during the diploid and haploid stages of biphasic life cycles universal among eukaryotic sexual organisms. If haploid and diploid gene expression both occur, selection can act in each phase, potentially in opposing directions. In addition, sex-specific selection during haploid phases is likely simply because male and female gametophytes/gametes tend to have contrasting life histories. We explored the potential for the maintenance of a stable polymorphism under ploidally antagonistic as well as sex-specific selection. Furthermore, we examined the role of the chromosomal location of alleles (autosomal or sex-linked). Our analyses show that the most permissible conditions for the maintenance of polymorphism occur under negative ploidy-by-sex interactions, where stronger selection for an allele in female than male diploids is coupled with weaker selection against the allele in female than male haploids. Such ploidy-by-sex interactions also promote allele frequency differences between the sexes. With constant fitness, ploidally antagonistic selection can maintain stable polymorphisms for autosomal and X-linked genes but not for Y-linked genes. We discuss the implications of our results and outline a number of biological settings where the scenarios modeled may apply.  相似文献

Game theory has been used by some authors to analyse evolutionary limits to the expression of aggression in theoretical haploid parthenogenetic species. Others have examined frequency dependent selection, of which aggression may be a case, by applying population genetic models to diploid species. A model is presented which attempts to combine these two approaches. Game theory is used to determine evolutionarily stable strategies and corresponding stable polymorphisms for a two-strategy game played by members of a diploid sexual species, when choice of strategy is determined by two alleles at a single locus. Results are given for dominant, co-dominant and recessive determination of choice of the more aggressive of two strategies, for two levels of relationship: unrelated players and sibs. It is found that for a range of models of single locus inheritance the evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) determined for haploid species remains the stable population strategy for diploid sexual species, when players are unrelated. In sibling contestants aggression is reduced. The mixed strategy haploid ESS underestimates, but the pure strategy haploid ESS provides a good indication of the degree to which relatedness lessens aggression in diploid species. For both haploid and diploid species there may be a considerable advantage to confining conflicts to kin.  相似文献

The effects of recessive, deleterious mutations on genetic variation at linked neutral loci can be heterozygosity-decreasing because of reduced effective population sizes or heterozygosity-increasing because of associative overdominance. Here we examine the balance between these effects by simulating individual diploid genotypes in small panmictic populations. The haploid genome consists of one linkage group with 1000 loci that can have deleterious mutations and a neutral marker. Combinations of the following parameters are studied: gametic mutation rate to harmful alleles (U), population size (N), recombination rate (r), selection coefficient (s), and dominance (h). The European water frog Pelophylax esculentus is a natural hybrid between P. lessonae (genotype LL) and P. ridibundus (RR). It reproduces through hybridogenesis, eliminating one parental genome from its germline and producing gametes containing the genome of the other parental species. According to previous studies, this elimination and transmission pattern is very diverse. In mixed populations, where only diploid hybrids (LR) live in sympatry and mate with one or both parental species, the excluded genome varies among regions, and the remaining genome is transmitted clonally to haploid gametes. In all‐hybrid populations consisting of diploid (LR) and triploid (LLR and/or LRR) frogs, diploid individuals also produce gametes clonally (1n in males, 2n in females), whereas triploids eliminate the genome they have in single copy and produce haploid gametes containing the recombined other genome. However, here, too, regional differences seem to exist, and some triploids have been reported to produce diploid gametes. In order to systematically study such regional and genotype differences in gamete production, their potential origin, and their consequences for the breeding system, we sampled frogs from five populations in three European countries, performed crossing experiments, and investigated the genetic variation through microsatellite analysis. For four populations, one in Poland, two in Germany, and one in Slovakia, our results confirmed the elimination and transmission pattern described above. In one Slovakian population, however, we found a totally different pattern. Here, triploid males (LLR) produce sperm with a clonally transmitted diploid LL genome, rather than a haploid recombined L genome, and LR females clonally produce haploid R eggs, rather than diploid LR eggs. These differences among the populations in gamete production go along with differences in genomotype composition, breeding system (i.e., the way triploids are produced), and genetic variation. These differences are strong evidence for a polyphyletic origin of triploids. Moreover, our findings shed light on the evolutionary potential inherent to the P. esculentus complex, where rare events due to untypical gametogenetic processes can lead to the raise, the perpetuation, and the dispersion of new evolutionary significant lineages which may also deserve special conservation measures.  相似文献

Differences in larval developmental mode are predicted to affect ecological and evolutionary processes ranging from gene flow and population bottlenecks to rates of population recovery from anthropogenic disturbance and capacity for local adaptation. The most powerful tests of these predictions use comparisons among species to ask how phylogeographic patterns are correlated with the evolution and loss of prolonged planktonic larval development. An important and largely untested assumption of these studies is that interspecific differences in population genetic structure are mainly caused by differences in dispersal and gene flow (rather than by differences in divergence times among populations or changes in effective population sizes), and that species with similar patterns of spatial genetic variation have similar underlying temporal demographic histories. Teasing apart these temporal and spatial patterns is important for understanding the causes and consequences of evolutionary changes in larval developmental mode. New analytical methods that use the coalescent history of allelic diversity can reveal these temporal patterns, test the strength of traditional population-genetic explanations for variation in spatial structure based on differences in dispersal, and identify strongly supported alternative explanations for spatial structure based on demographic history rather than on gene flow alone. We briefly review some of these recent analytical developments, and show their potential for refining ideas about the correspondence between the evolution of larval developmental mode, population demographic history, and spatial genetic variation.  相似文献

The effects of an acridine half-mustard, ICR 191, on the growth rate and ploidy of four haploid and two diploid lines of Rana pipiens cells in culture were studied. Growth curves indicate that the haploid and diploid cell lines were equally resistant to a 4-hour exposure of this drug (0.1 micrometer to 10 micrometer. ICR 191 treatment induced the haploid cell cultures to become diploid. The proportion of diploid cells increased progressively with respect to time after the 4-hour exposure period. The greater the concentration of ICR 191 applied, the more rapid the rate of conversion. Autoradiographic determinations of percent labelled nuclei indicate that DNA synthesis was not inhibited in haploid or in diploid cells. Therefore, the increased proportion of diploid cells did not originate from the small percentage of diploid cells in the initial population. Instead the haploid cells were converted to diploid cells. Time lapse cinematography indicated that the conversion mechanism was other than cell fusion. Conversion to higher ploidy did not occur when diploid cell cultures were exposed to ICR 191.  相似文献

We demonstrate how a genetic polymorphism of distinctly different alleles can develop during long-term frequency-dependent evolution in an initially monomorphic diploid population, if mutations have only small phenotypic effect. As a specific example, we use a version of Levene's (1953) soft selection model, where stabilizing selection acts on a continuous trait within each of two habitats. If the optimal phenotypes within the habitats are sufficiently different, then two distinctly different alleles evolve gradually from a single ancestral allele. In a wide range of parameter values, the two locally optimal phenotypes will be realized by one of the homozygotes and the heterozygote, rather than by the two homozygotes. Unlike in the haploid analogue of the model, there can be multiple polymorphic evolutionary attractors with different probabilities of convergence. Our results differ from the population genetic models of short-term evolution in two aspects: (1) a polymorphism that is population genetically stable may be invaded by a new mutant allele and, as a consequence, the population may fall back to monomorphism, (2) long-term evolution by allele substitutions may lead from a population where polymorphism is not possible into one where polymorphism is possible.  相似文献

Many organisms spend a significant portion of their life cycle as haploids and as diploids (a haploid–diploid life cycle). However, the evolutionary processes that could maintain this sort of life cycle are unclear. Most previous models of ploidy evolution have assumed that the fitness effects of new mutations are equal in haploids and homozygous diploids, however, this equivalency is not supported by empirical data. With different mutational effects, the overall (intrinsic) fitness of a haploid would not be equal to that of a diploid after a series of substitution events. Intrinsic fitness differences between haploids and diploids can also arise directly, for example because diploids tend to have larger cell sizes than haploids. Here, we incorporate intrinsic fitness differences into genetic models for the evolution of time spent in the haploid versus diploid phases, in which ploidy affects whether new mutations are masked. Life‐cycle evolution can be affected by intrinsic fitness differences between phases, the masking of mutations, or a combination of both. We find parameter ranges where these two selective forces act and show that the balance between them can favor convergence on a haploid–diploid life cycle, which is not observed in the absence of intrinsic fitness differences.  相似文献
