This work is about the viability domain corresponding to a model of fisheries management. The dynamic is subject of two constraints. The biological constraint ensures the stock perennity where as the economic one ensures a minimum income for the fleets. Using the mathematical concept of viability kernel, we find out a viability domain which simultaneously enables the fleets to exploit the resource, to ensure a minimum income and stock perennity.  相似文献

The linear programming model of optimal diet for herbivores has been criticized for being biologically unrealistic, for being too successful given statistical realities, and for being circular. I try to clarify the issue of circularity. Circularity arises if constraint lines are estimated from average values for governing parameters, when the assumed constraints are not effective. This may occur (1) under benign season conditions when consumers do not maximize their food intake, because of costs associated with food processing and storage, or (2) when an unidentified constraint limits intake. To evaluate hypotheses about the factors controlling diet composition, it must be shown that (1) consumers respond appropriately to variation in the parameters controlling constraint settings, and (2) the assumed constraints are close to their maximum (or minimum) settings.  相似文献

This work presents a stock/effort model describing both harvested fish population and fishing effort dynamics. The fishing effort dynamic is controlled by investment which corresponds to the revenue proportion generated by the activity. The dynamics are subject to a set of economic and biological state constraints. The analytical study focuses on the compatibility between state constraints and controlled dynamics. By using the mathematical concept of viability kernel, we reveal situations and management options that guarantee a sustainable system.  相似文献

湿地保护边界划定是维护湿地可持续发展的基础前提,也是协调湿地保护与农地利用、城镇发展土地配置与空间布局的必经途径。研究从湿地保护边界的"源-汇"生态景观互动视角着眼,明晰了湿地保护源及保护优先等级,建构了空间约束评价与生态断界来刻画汇景观空间层次分异,借助最小累积阻力模型测度与划分了湿地保护边界及其类型。研究发现:(1)基于多重因素的空间约束评价与湿地生态断界的划分,通过最小阻力模型有效地刻画外部因子集成对湿地保护的限制及差异,以量化方式描绘湿地保护所处阻力最小地带,为湿地保护边界划分提供了新的思路。(2)杭州湾南岸生态断界与中高约束的区域占据研究区52.69%比例,无约束地域仅为12.79%,奠定了综合因素空间约束强势的基本格局。加之低度约束区域占据34.53%,显示杭州湾南岸区域多介于高低空间约束性势转换或过渡阶段,压缩了湿地保护的空间。(3)研究划分湿地保护边界范围与缓冲区带为49.11、24.07km~2,面积总和仅占据杭州湾南岸5.47%,湿地保护拓展和弹性调整空间极为有限。除生态断界提供湿地保护的天然边界外,湿地保护界限表现为保育林区、农地延伸型和水源保护型三类。  相似文献

The constraint envelope describing the relationship between geographical range size and body size has usually been explained by a minimum viable population size model, furnishing a strong argument for species selection if geographical range size turns out to be ‘heritable’. Recent papers have questioned this assumption of nonzero geographical range heritability at a phylogenetic level, meaning that the logic that constraint envelopes provide support for higher‐level selection fails. However, I believe that analysis of constraint envelopes can still furnish insights for the hierarchical expansion of evolutionary theory because the fitness furnished by variation in body size, which is frequently measured as a highly ‘heritable’ trait at the species level, can be partitioned into anagenetic and cladogenetic components. The constraint envelope furnishes an explicit mechanism for large‐body biased extinction rates influencing the distribution of body size. More importantly, it is possible to envisage a scenario in which anagenetic trends driving an increase in body size in higher latitudes within species (Bergmann's rule) are counteracted by available habitat area or continental edges constraining overall species distribution in these higher latitudes, increasing the probability of extinction. Under this combined model, faunas at higher latitudes and under habitat constraints may reach equilibrium points between these opposing hierarchical adaptive forces at smaller body size than faunas with less intense higher‐level constraints and will tend to be more right‐skewed.  相似文献

Optimal control theory was applied to the process of batch beer fermentation. The performance functional considered was a weighted sum of maximum ethanol production and minimum time. Calculations were based on the model of Engasser et al. modified to include temperature effects. Model parameters were determined from isothermal batch fermentations. The fermentor cooling duty was the single available control. Temperature state variable constraints as well as control variable constraints were considered. The optimal control law is shown to be bang-bang control with the existence of a singular arc corresponding to isothermal operation at the maximum temperature constraint. An iterative algorithm is presented for computing appropriate switching times using a penalty-function-augmented performance functional.  相似文献

A sustainability issue for the rain forest in the corridor of Fianarantsoa (Madagascar) is to preserve the forest while ensuring the development of the local population. The aim of this paper is to determine whether the current situation is sustainable or not according to different action policy possibilities. We propose a general procedure based on viability analysis: Translation of sustainability issues into constraints on the system state; elaboration of a mathematical model of system evolution rules in the form of controlled dynamical system; computations of the viability kernels according to different action policy possibilities. Among control variables, we focus on monetary transfer. Without monetary transfer, we show that the current situation of the rain forest corridor is not sustainable in our mathematical modeling framework. We then estimate the minimal maximal amount per year necessary to make the current situation sustainable.  相似文献

Biotechnological and biomolecular advances have introduced novel uses for DNA such as DNA computing, storage, and encryption. For these applications, DNA sequence design requires maximal desired (and minimal undesired) hybridizations, which are the product of a single new DNA strand from 2 single DNA strands. Here, we propose a novel constraint to design DNA sequences based on thermodynamic properties. Existing constraints for DNA design are based on the Hamming distance, a constraint that does not address the thermodynamic properties of the DNA sequence. Using a unique, improved genetic algorithm, we designed DNA sequence sets which satisfy different distance constraints and employ a free energy gap based on a minimum free energy (MFE) to gauge DNA sequences based on set thermodynamic properties. When compared to the best constraints of the Hamming distance, our method yielded better thermodynamic qualities. We then used our improved genetic algorithm to obtain lower-bound DNA sequence sets. Here, we discuss the effects of novel constraint parameters on the free energy gap.  相似文献

Chemical shifts observed from samples that are uniformly aligned with respect to the magnetic field can be used as very high-resolution structural constraints. This constraint takes the form of an orientational constraint rather than the more familiar distance constraint. The accuracy of these constraints is dependent upon the quality of the tensor characterization. Both tensor element magnitudes and tensor orientations with respect to the molecular frame need to be considered. Here these constraints have been used to evaluate models for the channel conformation of gramicidin A. Of the three models used, the one experimentally derived model of gramicidin in sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles fits the data least well.  相似文献

First principles of thermodynamics imply that metabolic pathways are faced with a trade-off between the rate and yield of ATP production. Simple evolutionary models argue that this trade-off generates a fundamental social conflict in microbial populations: average fitness in a population is highest if all individuals exploit common resources efficiently, but individual reproductive rate is maximized by consuming common resources at the highest possible rate, a scenario known as the tragedy of the commons. In this paper, I review studies that have addressed two key questions: What is the evidence that the rate-yield trade-off is an evolutionary constraint on metabolic pathways? And, if so, what determines evolutionary outcome of the conflicts generated by this trade-off? Comparative studies and microbial experiments provide evidence that the rate-yield trade-off is an evolutionary constraint that is driven by thermodynamic constraints that are common to all metabolic pathways and pathway-specific constraints that reflect the evolutionary history of populations. Microbial selection experiments show that the evolutionary consequences of this trade-off depend on both kin selection and biochemical constraints. In well-mixed populations with low relatedness, genotypes with rapid and efficient metabolism can coexist as a result of negative frequency-dependent selection generated by density-dependent biochemical costs of rapid metabolism. Kin selection can promote the maintenance of efficient metabolism in structured populations with high relatedness by ensuring that genotypes with efficient metabolic pathways gain an indirect fitness benefit from their competitive restraint. I conclude by suggesting avenues for future research and by discussing the broader implications of this work for microbial social evolution.  相似文献

Aim

The capacity for poleward range expansions beyond the tropics in corals hinges on ecophysiological constraints and resulting responses to climatic variability. We aimed to determine how future warming will affect coral habitat suitability at the poleward range edges of these foundational species in the Northwest Pacific.

Location

Northwest Pacific.

Methods

We generated models integrating thermal physiological constraints of corals adapted to extreme seasonality in Hong Kong, specifically the minimum annual temperature and the proportion of time annually spent at seasonal extremes. With these models, we projected habitat suitability for five coral species under current and future climatic conditions across the Northwest Pacific.

Results

Climate model projections reveal an easing of thermal constraints on the leading-edge of coral ecophysiological limits with an expansion of thermally suitable habitat poleward by 2°–7° in latitude depending on the coral species and model considered. We also highlight a potential divergence of present and future thermal regimes that may lead to a mismatch in suitability for corals currently inhabiting high latitude reefs.

Main Conclusions

Understanding the thermal constraints on coral distributions and defining the potential range of corals under climate change is critical for adaptive management that focuses on coral conservation and ensuring ecosystem function of existing subtropical and temperate ecosystems.  相似文献

 A basic problem in community ecology is determining whether a community of interacting species will survive in the long term. A criterion ensuring this is that of permanence (or uniform persistence), which is based on the idea that species densities for large time are above minimum non-zero levels. There are various mathematical techniques for investigating permanence, but they do not yield an estimate for the minimum levels, and these may lie below minimum viability levels in the biological sense of ‘Practical Persistence’. Here we study a technique for obtaining explicit expressions for the minimum levels when one species is ‘slow’. This is illustrated for a predator–prey problem governed by difference equations, and we note that the technique is applicable even when the dynamics is chaotic.. The multidimensional computations performed by many biological systems are often characterized with limited information about the correlations between inputs and outputs. Given this limitation, our approach is to construct the maximum noise entropy response function of the system, leading to a closed-form and minimally biased model consistent with a given set of constraints on the input/output moments; the result is equivalent to conditional random field models from machine learning. For systems with binary outputs, such as neurons encoding sensory stimuli, the maximum noise entropy models are logistic functions whose arguments depend on the constraints. A constraint on the average output turns the binary maximum noise entropy models into minimum mutual information models, allowing for the calculation of the information content of the constraints and an information theoretic characterization of the system's computations. We use this approach to analyze the nonlinear input/output functions in macaque retina and thalamus; although these systems have been previously shown to be responsive to two input dimensions, the functional form of the response function in this reduced space had not been unambiguously identified. A second order model based on the logistic function is found to be both necessary and sufficient to accurately describe the neural responses to naturalistic stimuli, accounting for an average of 93% of the mutual information with a small number of parameters. Thus, despite the fact that the stimulus is highly non-Gaussian, the vast majority of the information in the neural responses is related to first and second order correlations. Our results suggest a principled and unbiased way to model multidimensional computations and determine the statistics of the inputs that are being encoded in the outputs.  相似文献

Combinations of allele frequencies and pairwise linkage disequilibrium terms, each of which is permissible at the two-locus level, may not always be permissible at the three-locus level. These additional constraints on the possible maximum and minimum values for the pairwise disequilibrium terms are formally determined and numerically analyzed. In some cases, the three-locus constraints on a pairwise disequilibrium (D) may be equivalent to the usual two-locus constraints, while in others, the positive or negative range may be restricted. This can result in situations where the allowable values of D are limited to only positive or only negative values up to the extreme case where there is only a single admissible value. No additional restrictions are placed on pairwise disequilibrium values when four loci are considered, other than those imposed by the three-way combinations containing the two loci of interest. A new measure of normalized pairwise linkage disequilibrium, allowing for the three-locus constraints, is defined and illustrated by an application to data from the human histocompatibility antigen (HLA) system. An analogous normalized three-way disequilibrium measure is also formulated.  相似文献

 The binocular correspondence problem was solved by implementing the uniqueness constraint and the continuity constraint, as proposed by Marr and Poggio [Marr D, PoggioT (1976) Science 194: 283–287]. However, these constraints are not sufficient to define the proper correspondence uniquely. With these constraints, random-dot stereograms (RDSs), consisting of the periodic textures in each image, are treated as a correspondence of surfaces composed of patches of alternating values of disparity. This is quite different from the surface we perceive through the RDSs, that is a surface characterized by a single depth. Because these constraints are local, they cannot produce the global optimum of correspondence. To obtain the global optimum of correspondence, we propose a model of binocular stereopsis in which a global measure of correspondence is explicitly employed. The model consists of two hierarchical systems. First, the lower system processes various correspondences based on the uniqueness constraint. Second, the higher system provides a global measure of correspondence for the disparity in question. The higher system uniquely determines the global optimum of correspondence in the lower system through the recurrent loop between hierarchical systems. The convergence of the recurrent loop is determined by the consistency between the hierarchical systems. The condition is termed the `global consistency constraint. The use of embryo transfer helps to improve reproductive performance during periods of heat stress. In vitro produced embryo transfer (IVP-ET) is more expensive than artificial insemination. We hypothesized that the value IVP-ET in seasonal herds depends on herd constraints, such as the maximum number of milking cows and the maximum number of calvings that can be accommodated throughout the year. Therefore, the objective of this study was to estimate how profitability in dairy herds exposed to summer heat stress is affected by the number of months in which IVP-ET is used, the use of IVP-ET in repeat-breeder cows, IVP-ET cost, and herd constraints. We built and used a nonlinear programming model of a dairy herd with young stock and cows with monthly Markov Chain transitions. The model varied the number of heifers calving in each calendar month to maximize herd profitability. We varied IVP-ET cost ($100 or $200), duration of the IVP-ET program (2 or 4 months), and the breeding number in which IVP-ET started (1st or 3rd). In total, 20 scenarios were simulated. Maximum profitability was obtained when IVP-ET was not used, regardless of herd constraints. The 16 scenarios in which IVP-ET was used showed increased seasonality in milk yield, numbers of milking cows, total cows, total calvings, and heifer calvings because the program tried to limit the number of IVP-ET breedings in the summer. The addition of the calving constraint increased the value of IVP-ET. The breakeven cost per IVP-ET ranged from −$6.79 to $24.38 compared with conventional semen cost of $20. In conclusion, the current market costs of IVP-ET did not warrant application with the objective to increase reproductive performance during heat stress. Herd constraints on the maximum allowable seasonality in the monthly number of milking cows and calvings affected the value of IVP-ET during heat stress.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. We develop a simple single dimension model incorporatingthe time and energy commitments of breeding altricial birdsin an effort to understand the evolutionary constraints on parentalcare. We chose time as the dimension of preference, becauseit is a naturally bounded constraint, e.g., length of day orbreeding season. The utility of the model was evaluated by comparingsimulations of time allocation of various breeding scenariosfor the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) to field data.The structure of the model may prove useful in determining theevolutionary constraints on parental care imposed by the developmentalpattern of chicks.  相似文献

In this article we consider the problem of determining the minimum cost configuration (number of machines and pallets) for a flexible manufacturing system with the constraint of meeting a prespecified throughput, while simultaneously allocating the total workload among the machines (or groups of machines). Our procedure allows consideration of upper and lower bounds on the workload at each machine group. These bounds arise as a consequence of precedence constraints among the various operations and/or limitations on the number or combinations of operations that can be assigned to a machine because of constraints on tool slots or the space required to store assembly components. Earlier work on problems of this nature assumes that the workload allocation is given. For the single-machine-type problem we develop an efficient implicit enumeration procedure that uses fathoming rules to eliminate dominated configurations, and we present computational results. We discuss how this procedure can be used as a building block in solving the problem with multiple machine types.  相似文献
