Relying on in-depth interviews with higher education students and young graduates the study investigates the factors underpinning the participation patterns of second-generation Turks in the Dutch higher education system. The paper highlights how ethnic minority students accommodate the constraints faced by the Dutch educational system by rationalizing economics at professional colleges as a suitable alternative to studying medicine at university, an alternative that will meet both their aspirations for a more successful and secure life than their parents’ while maintaining the traditional family ties in line with the work-life balance offered by a ‘nine-to-five job’.  相似文献

Abstract

Recently in numerous European countries of immigration, there has been a widespread ‘moral panic’ about immigrants and ethnic diversity. In The Netherlands, a backlash has occurred in policy and in public discourse, with migrants being blamed for not meeting their responsibility to integrate and for practising ‘backward religions’. Why is it that a self-defined ‘liberal’ and ‘tolerant’ society demands conformity, compulsion and introduces seemingly undemocratic sanctions towards immigrants in a move towards assimilationism? These issues are analysed by providing an overview of modes of incorporation of immigrants in the Netherlands and it presents evidence on the socio-economic situation of immigrants. The article argues that patterns of disadvantage cannot be explained solely by the low human capital attributes of the original immigrants. In spite of multiculturalism, the causes have to be sought in pervasive institutional discrimination and the persistence of a culture of racism. The study argues that a shift to assimilation is more likely to create further societal divisions.  相似文献

Recent literature on the role of pictorial representation in the life sciences has focused on the relationship between detailed representations of empirical data and more abstract, formal representations of theory. The standard argument is that in both a historical and epistemic sense, this relationship is a directional one: beginning with raw, unmediated images and moving towards diagrams that are more interpreted and more theoretically rich. Using the neural network diagrams of Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts as a case study, I argue that while in the empirical sciences, pictorial representation tends to move from data to theory, in areas of the life sciences that are predominantly theoretical, when abstraction occurs at the outset, the relationship between detail and abstraction in pictorial representations can be of a different character.  相似文献

随着城市化进程和一体化战略的持续推进,城市管理者急需了解城市规律以消减生态-资源-环境挑战,并提供坚实物质基础。以京津冀城市群及其组成城市为研究对象,创新性地从城市群和城市两尺度核算并分析了2000—2017年物质消耗状况及变化趋势,识别并对比了主要贡献物质、贡献部门和影响因素。研究表明:(1)研究期间,京津冀城市群物质消耗量总体上升。从物质类型看,主要由非金属矿物(>34.2%)拉动;从产业结构看,受到工业部门(>58%)绝对影响。首要驱动因素为经济规模(>50%)。(2)各城市物质消耗量与城市群较为类似,总体也呈增长态势,几乎均受到非金属矿物和工业部门驱动,且经济规模起到正向促进作用,不同的是物质消耗强度作用类型多样,且产业结构效应在城市中贡献更为突出。研究结果在一定程度上明确了城市及城市群代谢的规律,能够为优化资源利用效率和资源配置结构奠定基础,为城市及城市群生态管理与调控提供切实可行的落力点。  相似文献

Perennial ryegrass and perennial ryegrass/white clover permanent dairy pastures are compared with respect to productivity, environmental impact and financial costs in nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZ) in the UK. With appropriate management, and utilisation of recommended perennial ryegrass and white clover cultivars, white clover is likely to stabilise at around 20% of total dry matter production in a mixed pasture. Plant dry matter production and milk production from a perennial ryegrass/white clover pasture are likely to be similar to that from a perennial ryegrass pasture receiving 200 kg N ha−1 annum−1 and around 70% of that obtained with perennial ryegrass supplied with 350–400 kg N ha−1 annum−1. Nitrate, phosphorus and methane losses from the system and decreases in biodiversity relative to a grazed indigenous sward are likely to be similar for a perennial ryegrass/white clover pasture and a perennial ryegrass pasture receiving 200 kg N ha−1 annum−1: nitrate leachate from both systems is likely to comply with European legislation. Greenhouse gas emissions resulting from nitrogen (N) fertiliser production would be avoided with the perennial ryegrass/white clover pasture. Within NVZ stocking rate restrictions, white clover can provide the N required by a pasture at a lower financial cost than that incurred by the application of N fertiliser.  相似文献

The electronic circular dichroism (ECD) exciton chirality method is very useful for determining the absolute configuration (AC) of chiral compounds. In the ECD spectroscopy, the chromophore-chromophore interaction, ie, exciton coupling, is very important. For example, Harada and Nakanishi first discovered in 1969 that chiral dibenzoates exhibit exciton split bisignate Cotton effects, from the sign of which the screw sense between two long axes of benzoate chromophores, ie, the AC of dibenzoate, can be determined. This method was named the dibenzoate chirality rule and has been successfully applied to various natural products to determine their ACs. During these studies, it was also found that this CD method was expanded to encompass other aromatic and olefin chromophores like naphthalene, diene, enone, etc. Therefore, the name of the dibenzaote chirality rule was changed to the CD exciton chirality method. In 1970s, there were heated controversies about the inconsistency between X-ray Bijvoet and CD exciton chirality methods, which was a shocking and serious problem in the community of molecular chirality research. Harada and coworkers synthesized the most ideal cage compound with two anthracene chromophores to connect X-ray Bijvoet and CD exciton chitality methods and proved that these two methods are consistent with each other.  相似文献

Geostatistics (cokriging) were used to model the cross-correlated information between satellite-derived vegetation and climate variables and actual records of the tick Ixodes ricinus in the western Palearctic. The output was used to map the habitat suitability for I. ricinus on a continental scale. A database of collecting localities of I. ricinus was built up from a total of 812 records. This database has been cross-tabulated with satellite NOAA AVHRR pictures obtained from 1982 to 1994 over the Palearctic at 10 day intervals, with a resolution of 8 km per pixel. A cokriging system was generated to exploit satellite-derived data and to estimate the distribution of I. ricinus. Three vegetation (standard NDVI values) and four temperature variables output the habitat suitability prediction with a sensitivity of 0.98 and a specificity of 0.92. Results obtained with the model closely agreed with actual records of the tick, with 4 and 3% of false-positive and false-negative sites, respectively. Such statistical analysis can guide field work towards the correct interpretation of the distributional limits of ticks and may also be used to make predictions about the impact of global change on tick distributional ranges.  相似文献
