Controlled mating experiments in the white pine weevil (Pissodes strobi [Peck]) indicated that female weevils either stored sperm or fertilized eggs from one season to the next, and were able to colonize Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis [Bong.] Carr.) trees without additional mating events. This was interpreted as being beneficial for the insect, in that population establishment in a new habitat could be initiated by dispersing previously mated females without participation of the male. This makes colonization and population/outbreak development more likely as it reduces the need for mate searching in the second season. Paternity identification, based on microsatellite molecular markers, established that the progeny produced in year 2 by females mated only in year 1, were often fathered by more than one male. Multiple paternity, coupled with a lack of parthenogenesis, which was also demonstrated herein, may help to account for the high degree of genetic diversity evidenced in this species. 相似文献

Microsatellites are codominant and highly polymorphic genetic markers. They are widely used in studying parentage and reproductive success in many insect species. We developed six microsatellite markers in Pissodes storbi. The number of alleles per locus ranges from 5 to 16 alleles, with a mean number of 10. The high allelic diversity observed in this study showed that they could be useful in the study of parentage and reproductive success in P. strobi. 相似文献

Abstract: Studies were conducted under laboratory conditions to document the potential of Beauveria bassiana conidia applications for controlling the white pine weevil, Pissodes strobi (Peck). A screening test including six B. bassiana isolates allowed us to demonstrate that CFL (Centre de Foresterie des Laurentides) and IP-CPB (Île Perrault-charançon du pin blanc) were the most virulent isolates among the ones tested, with percentages of mortality after 3 weeks of 73% and 85.5%, respectively. These two B. basiana isolates were applied either onto soil or branch sections to compare the effectiveness of these potential control strategies. Greater than 75% mortality was observed within 3 weeks for both modes of application using suspensions of B. bassiana at a concentration of 1.0 × 108 (soil application) and 1.0 × 109 conidia/ml (branch application). The results demonstrate for the first time that B. bassiana is an effective entomopathogen against P. strobi . 相似文献

- Pissodes castaneus represents an emerging pest species for Pinus spp. production in Latin America. This species attacks all the cultivated pine species in Patagonia Argentina causing wood damage and tree death. The objectives of this work were to describe the host preference behaviour of P. castaneus and the influence of wood damage by conspecifics on its host selection.
- In two-choice bioassays, P. castaneus showed a feeding preference for Pinus contorta over P. ponderosa. However, percent weight gain when feeding on either species was similar.
- In other bioassays, P. castaneus spent more time in areas with twigs on which other conspecifics had recently fed, although they were able to successfully feed on twigs without previous damage.
- These results show that while P. castaneus can successfully colonize different pine species, P. contorta may be more susceptible to attack than P. ponderosa. Silvicultural management should be prioritized considering the weevil's preference for attacking damaged hosts.

1. Eight generations of white pine weevil, Pissodes strobi (Peck) , infesting the terminal shoots of young jack pine trees, were sampled as larvae, pupae, and adults between 1988 and 1995.
2. The density of adult weevils increased rapidly for the first 3 years of the study, then declined in the next 4 years. Between-generation rates of change in density of weevils were related to mean number of weevils produced per terminal shoot of the host tree. Net increases in population density followed years in which a relatively high number of weevils emerged per terminal shoot and vice versa.
3. The mean number of weevils emerging per terminal shoot was determined by survival of weevils between the end of the larval stage and the successful emergence of adult weevils.
4. There was no clear relationship between survival of the post-feeding stages of the weevil and rates of parasitism or bird predation on these same stages. There was, however, a strong negative relationship between survival of weevils within the terminal shoot and the abundance of the facultative dipteran predator Lonchaea corticis Taylor.
5. Our objective was to evaluate piperidine alkaloids as potential resistance factors in Sitka spruce, Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr, at risk to attack by white pine weevils, Pissodes strobi (Peck). We sampled 72 seedlings in each of two replicated field trials in the Oregon Coast Range. The seedlings were grown from open-pollinated seeds of putatively "resistant" or "susceptible" off-site parental sources. Alkaloid concentrations in bark and foliage were measured in previously unattacked trees at the time of weevil host selection. Leader mortality was evaluated in the fall to gauge actual resistance in the sample trees. Five families had < or = 25% topkill and seven sustained >50% topkill. Alkaloid concentrations differed significantly among families, but the major alkaloids did not appear to be functionally linked with topkill or useful indicators of resistance. However, our study design did not address all potential resistance mechanisms. Therefore, before concluding that Sitka spruce alkaloids have no influence on white pine weevils, complementary laboratory and field experiments are needed. 相似文献

Feeding and oviposition in the pine weevil Hylobius abietis (Linnaeus) were monitored under laboratory conditions in two long-term experiments lasting over an extended breeding season. Data were also collected from weevils under semi-natural conditions outdoors. In addition, the effects of crowding and starvation were studied in separate experiments. During the main peak oviposition period, female H. abietis consumed 50% more bark tissue than males. When oviposition ceased, the feeding rate of the females declined to the same level as in the males. The rates and spatial distribution patterns of oviposition and feeding were clearly affected by climatic conditions and the degree of crowding. Females were estimated to lay on average 0.8 eggs per day during the season under outdoor conditions. The realized fecundity of a female weevil during the first season was estimated to be approximately 70 eggs. The estimated average rate of feeding was 23 mm2 of Scots pine bark per weevil per day. This implies that planted seedlings can only constitute a minor part of the food resources needed to sustain H. abietispopulations of the size that usually appear on fresh clear-cuttings in northern Europe. 相似文献

Various aspects of the biology of Coeloides sordidator, an ectoparasitoid of pine weevils of the genus Pissodes, were studied. When reared in the laboratory on P. castaneus, females preferred to oviposit on third and fourth instar larvae in galleries, but ovipositions were also observed on second instars and prepupae. Pupae were not accepted as hosts. At 23°C and a 16 h day length, pre-imaginal development lasted 15-20 days. For each parasitoid population tested, between 8 and 28% of the individuals diapaused as prepupae in cocoons. The rate of diapause was not influenced by the photoperiod during larval development. In contrast, diapause was induced by a short day photoperiod on parents before and during oviposition and by low temperatures during the larval stage. Diapause termination was achieved by cold storage at 2°C for at least 8 weeks. Rearing of C. sordidator on P. castaneus under natural conditions showed that in the Swiss Jura it is mainly univoltine, with less than 10% of the parasitoids emerging for a second generation. When C. sordidator females were offered healthy P. castaneus larvae and larvae parasitized by the braconid endoparasitoid Eubazus semirugosus, there was no evidence that they were able to discriminate between healthy and parasitized hosts. The Canary Island pine weevil Brachyderes rugatus (Wollaston) consists of four allopatric subspecies that are thought to have arisen from several historic colonization events within the archipelago. We have isolated and optimized seven microsatellite loci from Brachyderes rugatus calvus from Gran Canaria. Six of these loci are polymorphic within B. rugatus (11–22 alleles per locus; heterozygosity between 0.43 and 0.84). There is no evidence for heterozygote deficit within populations or for linkage disequilibrium between pairs of loci. These molecular markers are likely to prove useful tools for quantifying the genetic variability of bottlenecked island populations. 相似文献

Maturation feeding on conifer bark by newly emerged Hylobius abietis(Linnaeus) is essential for reproductive development. When feeding occurs on young conifer transplants, this weevil causes significant economic damage. Between emergence and oviposition however, weevils feed on bark from different sources but of unknown nutritional 'quality'. The factors influencing the rate of feeding by males and females and female reproductive development were determined in laboratory bioassays using two contrasting food sources - the bark on different species of seedling conifer and on logs of mature trees. The nutritional 'quality' of bark was characterized by the concentration of nitrogen, total sugars, total polyphenols and resin. Regression models were used to show that overall, the rate of feeding on the bark of both seedlings and logs increased with weevil size and was negatively related to nitrogen concentration. The nitrogen concentration in seedling bark (mean 1.1%) was about three times higher than that of logs (mean 0.4%). The rate of reproductive development increased with nitrogen intake during feeding and the preoviposition period for weevils feeding on seedlings and logs was ~ 13 days and 46 days, respectively. Analysis of weevil mortality and of the weight gain of surviving weevils suggests that a nitrogen content of around 0.3% may be limiting for H. abietis. The possibility that nutritionally adequate food resources may be limiting for H. abietis is briefly discussed. 相似文献

- 3 Less than 30% of female P. strobi became sexually mature and laid eggs without experiencing dormancy under a temperature regime of 2 °C for 4 weeks.
- 4 Among the females that experienced a cold temperature treatment after emergence, 80% laid eggs after dormancy when exposed to a long‐day (LD 16 : 8 h) photoperiod and 17.6% laid eggs when exposed to a short‐day (LD 8 : 16 h) photoperiod.
- 5 Significantly more eggs were laid by all the females (with and without a cold treatment) when subjected to a long‐day photoperiod compared with a short‐day photoperiod.
- 6 A period of cold temperature followed by exposure to a long‐day photoperiod with warmer temperatures is required to break reproductive diapause and to obtain a good oviposition response in female P. strobi.

Abstract: The objective of the study was to demonstrate the importance of bark polar fraction from Norway spruce [ Picea abies (L.) Karst.] terminal leaders on the feeding activity and oviposition process of the female white pine weevil, Pissodes strobi (Peck). The bark polar fraction was extracted with a ternary solvent [chloroform, methanol and water (12 : 5 : 3)]. This extracted fraction was added, at different concentrations, to an artificial diet on which mated female white pine weevils could feed and oviposit. The bark polar fraction of Norway spruce terminal leaders promoted white pine weevil oviposition compared with untreated artificial diet. The results of this study contributed to the development of an efficient artificial rearing substrate required to better understand the interactions between white pine weevil and its host plants. The importance of more specific compounds found in the polar fraction could eventually help produce more resistant trees. 相似文献

Relatively few instances of sympatric speciation have been reported in the literature, and both theoretical and empirical studies of this mode of speciation remain controversial. Recently, a model of sympatric speciation less restrictive than earlier ones has been proposed. This study presents a hypothetical speciation scenario, based on current observations, which seems to be consistent with the new model. Two morphologically similar, though ecologically separated, species are identified in the Dusmoecetes similis (C. O. Waterhouse) species complex on Marion Island (46° 54'S, 37° 45'E), based on a study of the morphology, biology and ecology of the group. Differences between the demands placed on angiosperm- and bryophyte-feeding members of the complex, and the differing demands of bryophyte and angiosperm-dominated communities, coupled with low vagility and a high degree of assortative mating, suggest that a sympatric model can be used to explain speciation in this genus, which probably occurred within the last 10,000 years. Differences between Dusmoecetes marioni Jeannel and D. Similis (Waterhouse) are discussed, and a lectotype designated for the latter species. 相似文献

Abstract: The objective of this study was to estimate the silky cane weevil rate of dispersal under near‐natural conditions inside a screened enclosure where an array of buckets was baited with cut sugarcane stalks. One hundred weevils were released and weevils inside the buckets were counted hourly for 8 h, and then 24 and 48 h after release. A passive diffusion model was used to estimate the weevil's dispersal and disappearance rates, within and between rows of buckets with sugarcane. The weevils concentrated around the release point and slowly moved towards the boundaries of the experimental plot over time with an overall average dispersal rate of 2.8 ± 3.58 cm2/h. Dispersal and disappearance rates within and between rows were not significantly different among the time intervals considered (1–8, 8–24 and 24–48 h after release) except for the 1–8 time interval on the array representing the release point when the dispersal rate, D, was significantly higher than those at other time intervals. Continuum of the substratum to disperse from one side of the array to another via a wooden bridge may explain the higher dispersal rate through this array. The number of buckets exposed to the sun during the morning hours was significantly higher on those rows exposed to the sun (south side of the screen enclosure) than on the shaded side. Longer times of bucket exposure to the sun may explain the predominant distribution of weevils in that area suggesting that the weevil population is constantly expanding and retracting according to micro environmental conditions. 相似文献

In the chestnut weevil Curculio elephas, adult emergences spread over 3 or 4 years due to prolonged larval diapause in some individuals. Weevils with an extended
diapause emerge, on the average, 1–10 days before those with simple diapause, but whatever the age of insects, emergences
occur always from mid-August to early October. When the summer is dry, some adults cannot emerge because of the hardness of
the soil. Emergence sucess of adults is smaller in females than in males. The result is that the sex ratio is female-biased
before emergence and male-biased after. Summer drought cannot be predicted by the chestnut weevil, and when the soil is dry
27–78% of females cannot emerge and do not reproduce. The year after a summer drought, many reproducing females may emerge
from larvae with prolonged diapause. These results suggest an evolutionary influence on the variability in diapause duration.
Computer simulations and observations do not support the hypothesis that the main cause of variation in diapause length is
the existence of several distinct genotypes within populations. On the contrary, our data strengthen the hypothesis for coin-flipping

Abstract 1 The dose–response of azadirachtin on vine weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus (Fabricius), reproduction is investigated by confining adults to feed on treated Taxus × media leaves, and by counting and evaluating development in the resulting eggs. 2 A dosage‐dependent reduction in oviposition is discovered for foliar surface residues of azadirachtin, with an EC50 of 25–50 parts per million (p.p.m) and 99.2% inhibition of viable egg production with 100 p.p.m. 3 Switching weevils from treated to untreated foliage allows reproductive capability to be restored for weevils that cease egg laying after azadirachtin exposure of 50 p.p.m. Weevils that had already started laying eggs in untreated groups soon cease oviposition once switched to azadirachtin‐treated foliage. 4 A transovarial effect results in a decrease in the percentage of viable eggs as the azadirachtin concentration increases. 5 The amount of feeding on foliage does not appreciably decrease at these hormonally effective concentrations, and adult weevil mortality is only slightly greater in the azadirachtin‐treated groups. Therefore, the overall effect of azadirachtin on weevil populations in the field is difficult to assess, except by collecting weevils to determine whether they are able to lay viable eggs. 相似文献
