Capsule: Citizen science data on Wood Warblers Phylloscopus sibilatrix showed that the species non-selectively used a wide variety of habitats during migration but had a tendency for settling to breed in forest and natural areas.

Aims: We tested the hypothesis that habitat used during spring stopovers in Spain differed from habitat use during the breeding period in Switzerland in a year of exceptional abundance as a result of persistent easterly winds in the Mediterranean.

Methods: Habitat use during spring migration 2015 was compared by using bootstrapping resampling techniques on citizen science data from Spain and Switzerland, comparing the land-cover categories between locations of observations with random pseudo-absences.

Results: Wood Warblers showed no preference for habitat features during migration and covered practically all available habitat types from urbanized areas to wetlands and forests, whereas in the breeding range birds showed an increasing tendency to be present in forest habitats.

Conclusions: Habitat use during spring migration covered most available habitat types from urbanized areas to wetlands and forests. Breeding habitat use was restricted to forested areas. Citizen science allowed a quick collection of biological data over a wide area to potentially identify large-scale biological patterns. This is essential to potentially manage international conservation efforts for declining species.  相似文献

Capsule: Across Britain, breeding Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata are less numerous and have shown greater population declines in areas with more arable farming, woodland cover and higher generalist predator abundance.

Aims: We present the first national-scale analysis of the potential drivers of Curlew population change in Britain, which is needed to guide conservation action for this globally near-threatened, declining species.

Methods: Breeding Bird Survey data and environmental predictors were used to model variation in Curlew abundance in 1995–99 and 2007–11, and population change between these periods.

Results: Arable farming and woodland cover were negatively associated with Curlew abundance and population declines. Curlew abundance was positively associated with extent of protected area coverage and gamebird numbers. Abundance and population change were positively associated with cooler temperatures and higher summer rainfall, but negatively associated with numbers of generalist predators.

Conclusions: We found support for the negative effects of intensive agriculture, forestry, increases in generalist predator populations and climate warming on Curlew abundance and population change. Effective site protection and measures to reduce generalist predator abundance may be important conservation measures, together with improving breeding habitat quality in the wider countryside.  相似文献

Capsule: Global Positioning System (GPS)-tagged adult Golden Eagles Aquila chrysaetos breeding in forests in northern Sweden selected clear-cuts, coniferous forests with lichens and steep slopes during the breeding season but avoided wetlands and mixed forest.

Aims: To investigate the habitat selection patterns of tree-nesting Golden Eagles, and identify how potential conflicts with wind farm development could be minimized.

Methods: The study is based on GPS tracking data from 22 adult eagles. We estimated home range sizes using a biased random bridge approach and habitat selection patterns using resource selection functions following a use-availability design.

Results: Core home range size among adults was variable during the breeding season (5–30?km2). Individual movement extents were variable, but sexes did not significantly differ in their scale of movement. At the landscape scale, individuals selected for clear-cuts and coniferous forest with ground lichens, whereas wetland, water bodies and mixed forest were avoided. Steeper and south facing slopes were selected for, whereas, north facing slopes were avoided.

Conclusions: Potential conflicts between eagles and wind energy establishment can be reduced if wind farms are placed away from steep slopes, minimizing areas that are clear-cut during construction, and locating turbines within dense, young and other less favoured forest habitats.  相似文献

Capsule: A multi-element index is developed to help support decisions with respect to the establishment and review of national networks of European Union (EU) Special Protection Areas (SPAs).

Aims: To develop an index based on biological criteria which can be used to assess the sufficiency of protected area network coverage for national populations of individual bird species.

Methods: A Site Provision Index (SPI) was derived from data on species’ national and international distribution, population size, habitat use and site-fidelity. It was tested against the results of past UK policy and independent expert judgement.

Results: Index values were calculated for all regularly occurring UK birds for which the EU Birds Directive indicates that SPA provision should be considered. Index values and expert opinion on the percentage of populations of species expected to be found in a national network of protected areas were highly correlated. Indices also strongly correlated with existing provision of SPA protection for populations. Residuals from this regression relationship highlight objectively those species where consideration of further SPA provision may be necessary.

Conclusion: The SPI can provide a decision-support tool, through a form of gap analysis, to help identify where there is a significant difference between current protected area provision for a species and the level of provision that might be expected relative to other species with similar distribution and ecology.  相似文献

Capsule: Conservation programmes for Black Grouse Tetrao tetrix need to consider managements that increase invertebrates for chicks.

Aims: To compare invertebrates in chick diet between habitat and region and to relate abundance of preferred invertebrates to Black Grouse breeding success.

Methods: Chick faeces were collected from roosts in the Pennines (northern England) and Perthshire (Scottish Highlands) to identify invertebrates eaten. Larval abundance was determined by sweep netting (Pennines) and related to Black Grouse breeding success.

Results: Invertebrates were recovered out of 98 faecal samples from 63 broods. Ants were more numerous in chick diet in Perthshire, with larvae (both sawflies and moths) more numerous in the Pennines. Sawfly larval abundance was positively correlated with Black Grouse breeding success in the Pennines.

Conclusions: Management for Black Grouse should promote high invertebrate abundance to maintain high breeding success. This may be achieved through creating low-intensity grazed moorland fringes to encourage Bilberry, and associated moth caterpillars, adjacent to areas of higher grazing intensity to retain grasses and rushes that host sawfly larvae.  相似文献

Capsule: The abundance of Tree sparrow Passer montanus, House Sparrow Passer domesticus and Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella, three priority farmland birds, increased over a 5-year period in response to a targeted agri-environment scheme (AES).

Aims: To assess the effects of a targeted AES on the abundance of a suite of farmland bird species over a 5-year period.

Methods: We compare temporal changes in abundance of 12 farmland bird species of conservation concern on 33 AES and 22 control farms in County Down, Northern Ireland. Five of these species were designated targets for conservation action under the Countryside Management Scheme (CMS).

Results: CMS management was associated with more positive changes in abundance for three of the five target species and more negative changes for one target species (albeit caused mainly by a large reduction at a single farm). CMS management had little influence on the abundance of non-target species or on avian species richness. Farm-scale changes in abundance were generally unrelated to the extent of local CMS provision, the only exception involved House Sparrow and seed-rich winter habitats.

Conclusion: This study demonstrates that generic AES land management can improve the population status of target farmland birds on farms with AES management.  相似文献

Capsule: Taiga Bean Geese Anser fabalis fabalis wintering near Falkirk, Scotland staged in Denmark, Norway and Sweden and summered in central Sweden.

Aims: To determine the migration routes, timing of movements, breeding area and home ranges of Taiga Bean Geese wintering near Falkirk, Scotland.

Methods: Ten Taiga Bean Geese, caught on the wintering grounds in Scotland, were marked with neck collars carrying global positioning system (GPS) tags. A further 21 geese were fitted with individually marked plastic neck collars. GPS location data were collected and field counts and searches for individually marked geese were undertaken to provide detailed information on their location throughout the year.

Results: Seven GPS tags provided information away from Scotland, indicating that two migration routes were used en route to the breeding grounds in Dalarna, Sweden. During the non-breeding season, the total home range of the geese was approximately 466?km2, although the total area within agricultural fields used by the geese may have been as small as 13?km2.

Conclusions: The timing of movements, migration routes, breeding area and identification of important stop-over sites for this wintering population are described for the first time.  相似文献

Capsule: The Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio and the Barred Warbler Sylvia nisoria had similar habitat preferences and their territories often overlapped. However, we found that Red-backed Shrikes were more flexible in habitat choice whilst Barred Warblers had more specific requirements.

Aim: We aimed to analyse and compare distribution and habitat preferences of Red-backed Shrikes and Barred Warblers breeding sympatrically in semi-natural landscape in a wetland/farmland mosaic.

Methods: We examined habitat availability and use by the two species within their breeding territories to identify differences in habitat selection.

Results: Territories of both species were similar in habitat composition and used levees, bushes, fallow areas and single trees. However, the spatial characteristics of the territories differed between species. Red-backed Shrikes used a wider range of sizes and shapes of habitat patches, whilst Barred Warblers preferred a more complex landscape structure and a higher diversity of habitat types. We also found that areas of 71% of Barred Warbler and 34% of Red-backed Shrike territories overlapped.

Conclusion: Whilst both species showed similar habitat choices, they appeared to differ significantly in terms of landscape structure: Red-backed Shrikes were more flexible and less selective than Barred Warblers in their habitat choice.  相似文献

Capsule: The Black Grouse is a primarily lekking species, but low population density and lack of suitable habitat can lead to the establishment of non-lekking populations.

Aims: To understand if differences in density could be related to differences in the lekking system, if there were differences in lek-site selection, and if there was a direct effect of habitat on the lek size.

Methods: We compared lek sizes between two Black Grouse populations with different male population densities as estimated by distance sampling. We considered land-cover categories, landscape metrics and orographic variables and computed the Ivlev’s Electivity Index to evaluate habitat selection of males in the two study areas. A general linear model was used to assess the relationship between lek size and habitat variables.

Results: We could not demonstrate the direct effect of density on the displaying behaviour but we found strongly different patterns of lek-site selection and different effects of habitat on lek size according to the population density.

Conclusions: We concluded that habitat normally considered as high quality and habitat complexity may play different roles in selection by solitary versus lekking males when different population densities are considered.  相似文献

Background: Although lianas are important in forest ecosystems, information on the environmental factors influencing their diversity, structure and habitat associations is scanty.

Aims: This study had the aim of determining variation in liana diversity, structure and habitat associations across different topographic habitats, and the environmental factors influencing them, in the Penang Hill Forest Reserve, Malaysia.

Methods: Liana diversity, structure and habitat associations were examined in 30 plots, 40 m × 40 m, randomly demarcated within three topographic habitats (flatland, slope and valley). The physico-chemical properties of the soils in the plots were determined and the altitude and slope of the plots recorded.

Results: Liana species richness, diversity and structure varied significantly among the topographic habitats. Liana species richness, diversity and abundance variations were related to soil moisture, phosphorus content, pH and altitude, whereas liana diameter and basal area were associated with soil magnesium and slope. A total of eight species had a positive association with the habitat and a further six showed a negative association. Four species had a positive association with the flatland habitat, but only three and two species, respectively, with slope and valley habitats. The slope habitat gave the highest number of species that showed a negative association.

Conclusions: Liana diversity and structure varied between habitats. Some liana species showed different associations with specific habitats. Environmental variables were identified that influence liana diversity, structure and habitat associations. The study provides important information about the factors influencing liana success, and these will be of value in liana conservation and management in tropical forests.  相似文献

Capsule Differences in Cork Oak Quercus suber and Holm Oak Quercus rotundifolia dominance had little influence on bird communities though bark-gleaners showed a foraging preference for Cork Oak.

Aims Examine the use of Cork and Holm Oak trees by insectivorous birds in Mediterranean oak woodlands.

Methods Point-counts were used to compare species abundance among Cork Oak-dominated, Holm Oak-dominated and mixed woodlands. Focal foraging observations were used to evaluate the use of Cork and Holm Oaks in the three habitats and to relate tree characteristics with the foraging time of foliage- and bark-gleaners.

Results Bird densities in the three habitats were not different for most foliage- and bark-gleaners. Tree preference index values and foraging time per tree showed no significant differences between tree species and foraging guilds, however bark-gleaners had positive index values for Cork Oak in the three habitats. The foraging time of foliage- and bark-gleaners on both tree species showed a positive relationship with characteristics associated with arthropod abundance.

Conclusion Cork and Holm Oak trees are equally preferred by foliage-gleaners but bark-gleaners moderately preferred Cork Oak. Characteristics regarding morphology, phenology and physiological condition of trees can be used to predict habitat quality for insectivorous forest birds in Mediterranean oak woodlands.  相似文献

Capsule: Carolina Wrens Thryothorus ludovicianus in urban and rural environments responded most intensely to predators common to their environments.

Aims: To determine the role of experience in predator recognition and response among Carolina Wrens. We predicted that wrens in the urban environment, where domestic cats are common, would respond more intensely to mounts of cats than snakes (a less common nest predator) placed near their nests. In the rural (forested) environment, we predicted a greater response to snakes than cats, because snakes are the more common predator in that environment.

Methods: We placed mounted specimens of a snake and a cat near wren nests at the late nestling stage and quantified responses. We used a Rock Dove Columba livia mount as the control because it is a non-threatening species to the nestlings, and should be familiar to the wrens.

Results: Carolina Wrens in the urban area responded most intensively to the cat mounts, whereas those in the rural environment responded more to the snake, with indications of innate predator recognition and defence. Cats were more common in the urban environment. Wrens used different alarm calls in the two habitats, but further study is needed to understand the significance of this variation.

Conclusions: Birds may have the ability to adapt their responses to local predators, both native and non-native, which may be especially important for their success in urbanized habitats.  相似文献

Capsule: Hen Harriers Circus cyaneus on the Isle of Mull, UK, are associated with habitat mosaics consisting of moorland, scrub and forestry but avoid grazed land, suggesting that forested habitats could be managed sympathetically for the Hen Harrier in the future should the current UK population increase.

Aims: To use distribution modelling to investigate nesting habitat associations using a long-term data set for the Hen Harrier on Mull.

Methods: We develop area-interaction models using a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator penalty to explore the distribution of 102 Hen Harrier nest sites in relation to habitat and topography. Our model is then successfully validated in tests using data for 70 nest sites from subsequent years.

Results: Our model is effective in predicting suitable areas for Hen Harrier nest sites and indicates that Hen Harriers on Mull are found in habitat mosaics below 200 m above sea level. Hen Harrier nest intensity is positively associated with increasing proportions of moorland and scrub, open canopy forestry and closed canopy forestry. Nest intensity is negatively associated with increasing proportions of grazed land.

Conclusion: Hen Harriers avoid grazed areas but are relatively tolerant of other habitat combinations. These findings are supported by previous observations of Hen Harrier habitat use and have implications for the recovery of some Hen Harrier populations in Special Protection Areas and future forest management. Open canopy forest and forest mosaics could potentially be incorporated into landscape-scale conservation plans for Hen Harriers using the population on Mull as an example.  相似文献

Capsule: The structure of Great Tit Parus major songs is shaped by the acoustic properties of the habitat within the breeding territory of individuals.

Aim: To test whether the structure of the habitat influences song structure within a population of Great Tits P. major.

Methods: We recorded Great Tit songs from 42 territories on two different days and measured the habitat structure in each territory. We also trapped the males and estimated the breeding density around each territory, so were able to control the analysis by date, breeding density and male characteristics.

Results: Song pause length was positively affected by the ground cover, while the song rate and the minimum frequency were negatively affected by the shrub cover. Male size negatively affected the peak frequency of the songs, whereas the age of the males affected the frequency range; older males sang with a broader bandwidth.

Conclusion: This study suggests that Great Tits are capable of adjusting their vocalizations in each territory, presumably to enhance transmission owing to vocal plasticity.  相似文献

Capsule: Many protected forests at high elevations show higher endemic biodiversity than unprotected habitats at low elevations. In seasonal ecosystems, however, harsh environmental conditions during winter may force individuals to move from protected forests to unprotected degraded forests in lowlands.

Aims: To examine how forest types and seasons affect avian diversity and habitat-use guilds in protected and unprotected forests.

Methods: Habitat and seasonal avian surveys were conducted to test forest type and seasonal differences on avian species richness, relative abundances and relative abundance of habitat-use guilds.

Results: Twenty-three avian species (~40% endemics) were recorded. Highland old growth forests showed the highest richness (4.1–4.9 species/point count). The lowest richness was recorded in mid-elevation secondary forests (3.1 species/point count). The highest relative abundances for habitat-specialist understorey users and large tree users were recorded in highland old growth forests. However, the abundance of large tree users was higher in secondary forests at low elevations during colder seasons.

Conclusions: Some species and guilds may move to lower elevations outside protected areas during winter. Increasing degradation of unprotected areas will likely affect the suitability of ‘winter habitat’ for specialist guilds, and thus the ecological processes and source/sink dynamics occurring across boundaries of protected and unprotected areas.  相似文献

Capsule: Breeding Grey Partridges Perdix perdix on hill farms preferred Soft Rush-infested rough grazing which provided nesting cover and invertebrates for foraging chicks.

Aims: To measure habitat use, nest sites, chick diet and breeding productivity of Grey Partridge on hill farms in north east England.

Methods: We measured actual habitat use of radio-tagged individuals in relation to its availability both within home ranges and over the wider study area. Nesting habitat and breeding productivity data were collected from radio-tagged pairs. Faecal samples from roost sites of broods were collected to assess chick diet.

Results: Grey Partridges preferred rough grazing habitats. Sixty-nine per cent of nests were found in rough grazing with females preferring to nest in tall rushes which provided cover. Chick diet differed between habitats and in relation to brood age. In rough grazing, sawfly larvae were the most numerous item eaten by young (46%) and older broods (27%).

Conclusion: On hill farms, breeding Grey Partridges preferred rough grazings, where broods preferred sawfly larvae. It is important that rush-infested rough grazings are not agriculturally improved and grazing regimes that provide abundant sawfly larvae are practised.  相似文献

Capsule: Predation rates of artificial nests along elevational gradients were higher closer to the treeline in the European Alps.

Aims: Alpine grassland birds tend to show an avoidance of mature trees, possibly due to an edge effect, such as higher predation pressure close to the treeline. This study aimed to estimate potential predation pressure in relation to the distance from the treeline and other environmental variables by using artificial nests positioned along elevational transects in the Italian Alps.

Methods: A total of 119 artificial nests were positioned and monitored during the breeding season. For each nest, habitat data at small and large scales were collected. Daily nest survival was estimated using MARK.

Results: The most informative model included date, distance from the treeline and a micro-habitat structure variable. In particular, the model showed a positive relationship between nest survival and the distance from the treeline.

Conclusions: This study suggests that if treelines advance due to climate change, the functional habitat loss may be greater than physical habitat loss, since the optimal breeding area would be further away from the forest edge. The conservation of high-elevation grasslands in relation to environmental changes may therefore be addressed through management strategies to maintain open habitats.  相似文献

Capsule: Local weather conditions, but not a city-associated diet composition, influence the breeding performance of urban Eurasian Kestrels Falco tinnunculus.

Aims: We aim to explore the impact of diet composition, specifically a high proportion of avian prey, on the breeding performance of urban Eurasian Kestrels under different weather conditions.

Methods: The Eurasian Kestrel is known to exploit cities and occurs in the study area of Vienna, Austria (415?km2) at high breeding densities of 89–122 pairs/100?km2. Unlike their rural conspecifics which specialize in voles, urban Kestrels are generalists, preying on passerines and mammals, but also reptiles and insects. We explore this alternative diet through pellet analyses along an urbanization gradient over a 5-year period and link diet to reproductive performance, taking local weather conditions into account.

Results: Our results showed that weather had a greater influence on breeding performance than did diet. Warm and dry weather during the arrival and courtship period was correlated with earlier egg-laying, higher nestling survival and an overall higher breeding success. Dry winters increased the proportion of mammalian prey, whereas low temperatures and high rainfall during the nestling phase increased the proportion of avian prey. Overall, a more diverse diet was also associated with higher rainfall, but only during the arrival and courtship period.

Conclusion: Our research shows a stronger connection between breeding performance and weather conditions than between breeding performance and diet composition, although there may be indirect effects of weather on prey availability which augment the impact of diet on reproductive output in the Eurasian Kestrel.  相似文献

Capsule: We describe ecological factors associated with movements of a globally declining raptor species, the Eastern Imperial Eagle Aquila heliaca.

Aims: To describe the movements, habitat associations and resource selection of Eastern Imperial Eagles marked in Central Asia.

Methods: We used global positioning system (GPS) data sent via satellite telemetry devices deployed on Eastern Imperial Eagles captured in Kazakhstan to calculate distances travelled and to associate habitat and weather variables with eagle locations collected throughout the annual cycle. We also used resource selection models to evaluate habitat use of tracked birds during autumn migration. Separately, we used wing-tagging recovery data to broaden our understanding of wintering locations of eagles.

Results: Eagles tagged in Kazakhstan wintered in most countries on the Arabian Peninsula, as well as Iran and India. The adult eagle we tracked travelled more efficiently than did the four pre-adults. During autumn migration, telemetered eagles used a mixture of vegetation types, but during winter and summer, they primarily used bare and sparsely vegetated areas. Finally, telemetered birds used orographic updrafts to subsidize their autumn migration flight, but they relied on thermal updrafts during spring migration.

Conclusion: Our study is the first to use GPS telemetry to describe year-round movements and habitat associations of Eastern Imperial Eagles in Central Asia. Our findings provide insight into the ecology of this vulnerable raptor species that can contribute to conservation efforts on its behalf.  相似文献

Capsule: Corncrake Crex crex males shift their territories and change habitat preferences across the breeding season as a consequence of anthropogenic pressure and/or to enhance the chances of reproduction through sequential polygamy.

Aims: To examine how habitat structure changed during the breeding season, whether Corncrake males responded to those changes and which habitat features were crucial when males settled and occupied territories.

Methods: Calling male Corncrakes were surveyed six times during the breeding season. In each location where a calling male was recorded, the habitat and vegetation structure was described from one to three times during the season.

Results: Corncrake males avoided extremely wet and extremely dry habitats, whereas large sedge and reed communities were much more preferred. There were significant seasonal changes in the density of vegetation and moisture content. Males were more sedentary at the beginning of the breeding season. Males significantly changed habitat preferences in short-periods of time. However, none of the habitat-related features explained whether males stayed or left the territory.

Conclusion: Corncrakes shift their territories during the breeding season in response to anthropogenic pressure (agricultural activity) as well as changes in water levels during the year. However, territorial shifts within seasons might also be caused by the appearance of fertile females in different habitats at different stages of the breeding season.  相似文献
