Trilobites offer the opportunity to explore postembryonic development within the fossil record of arthropod evolution. In contrast to most trilobites, the Silurian proetid Aulacopleura konincki from the Czech Republic exhibits marked variation in the mature number of thoracic segments, with five morphs with 18-22 thoracic segments. The combination of abundant articulated specimens available from a narrow stratigraphic interval and segmental intraspecific variation makes this trilobite singularly useful for studying postembryonic growth and segmentation. Trunk segmentation followed a hemianamorphic pattern, as seen in other arthropods and as characteristic of the Trilobita; during a first anamorphic phase, segments were accreted, while in the subsequent epimorphic phase, segmentation did not proceed further despite continued growth. Size increment during the anamorphic phase was targeted and followed Dyar's rule, a geometric progression typical of many arthropods. We consider alternative hypotheses for the control of the switch from anamorphic to epimorphic phases of development. Our analysis favors a scenario in which the mature number of thoracic segments was determined quite early in development rather than at a late stage in association with a critical size threshold. This study demonstrates that hypotheses concerning developmental pattern and control can be tested in organisms belonging to an extinct clade.  相似文献

Trilobite body patterning and the evolution of arthropod tagmosis   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Preservation permitting patterns of developmental evolution can be reconstructed within long extinct clades, and the rich fossil record of trilobite ontogeny and phylogeny provides an unparalleled opportunity for doing so. Furthermore, knowledge of Hox gene expression patterns among living arthropods permit inferences about possible Hox gene deployment in trilobites. The trilobite anteroposterior body plan is consistent with recent suggestions that basal euarthropods had a relatively low degree of tagmosis among cephalic limbs, possibly related to overlapping expression domains of cephalic Hox genes. Trilobite trunk segments appeared sequentially at a subterminal generative zone, and were exchanged between regions of fused and freely articulating segments during growth. Homonomous trunk segment shape and gradual size transition were apparently phylogenetically basal conditions and suggest a single trunk tagma. Several derived clades independently evolved functionally distinct tagmata within the trunk, apparently exchanging flexible segment numbers for greater regionally autonomy. The trilobite trunk chronicles how different aspects of arthropod segmentation coevolved as the degree of tagmosis increased.  相似文献

Completely enrolled, phosphatized, 3‐D specimens of the eodiscinid trilobite Tsunyidiscus yanjiazhaiensis from Cambrian Stage 3 of South China exhibit much morphological detail and show variation in delicate coaptative structures associated with their trunk segmentation. The relationship between enrolment mechanism and trunk segmentation during ontogeny confirms a unique developmental pattern among the early Cambrian eodiscoid trilobites, revealing how these animals controlled the rate of segment increase and release during post‐embryonic development in their life cycles.  相似文献

Trilobites have a rich and abundant fossil record, but little is known about the intrinsic mechanisms that orchestrate their body organization. To date, there is disagreement regarding the correspondence, or lack thereof, of the segmental units that constitute the trilobite trunk and their associated exoskeletal elements. The phylogenetic position of trilobites within total-group Euarthropoda, however, allows inferences about the underlying organization in these extinct taxa to be made, as some of the fundamental genetic processes for constructing the trunk segments are remarkably conserved among living arthropods. One example is the expression of the segment polarity gene engrailed, which at embryonic and early postembryonic stages is expressed in extant panarthropods (i.e. tardigrades, onychophorans, euarthropods) as transverse stripes that define the posteriormost region of each trunk segment. Due to its conservative morphology and allegedly primitive trunk tagmosis, we have utilized the centipede Strigamia maritima to study the correspondence between the expression of engrailed during late embryonic to postembryonic stages, and the development of the dorsal exoskeletal plates (i.e. tergites). The results corroborate the close correlation between the formation of the tergite borders and the dorsal expression of engrailed, and suggest that this association represents a symplesiomorphy within Euarthropoda. This correspondence between the genetic and phenetic levels enables making accurate inferences about the dorsoventral expression domains of engrailed in the trunk of exceptionally preserved trilobites and their close relatives, and is suggestive of the widespread occurrence of a distinct type of genetic segmental mismatch in these extinct arthropods. The metameric organization of the digestive tract in trilobites provides further support to this new interpretation. The wider evolutionary implications of these findings suggest the presence of a derived morphogenetic patterning mechanism responsible for the reiterated occurrence of different types of trunk dorsoventral segmental mismatch in several phylogenetically distant, extinct and extant, arthropod groups.  相似文献

We performed a tree-based analysis of trilobite postembryonic development in a sample of 60 species for which quantitative data on segmentation and growth increments between putative successive instars are available, and that spans much of the temporal, phylogenetic, and habitat range of the group. Three developmental traits were investigated: the developmental mode of trunk segmentation, the average per-molt growth rate, and the conformity to a constant per-molt growth rate (Dyar's rule), for which an original metric was devised. Growth rates are within the normal range with respect to other arthropods and show overall conformity to Dyar's rule. Randomization tests indicate statistically significant phylogenetic signal for growth in early juveniles but not in later stages. Among five evolutionary models fit via maximum likelihood, one in which growth rates vary independently among species, analogous to Brownian motion on a star phylogeny, is the best supported in all ontogenetic stages, although a model with a single, stationary peak to which growth rates are attracted also garners nontrivial support. These results are not consistent with unbounded, Brownian-motion-like evolutionary dynamics, but instead suggest the influence of an adaptive zone. Our results suggest that developmental traits in trilobites were relatively labile during evolutionary history.  相似文献

Postembryonic segmentation (anamorphosis) is widespread among arthropods, but only partially known as for its developmental mechanics and control. Studies on developmental genetics of segmentation in anamorphic arthropods are mostly limited to the germ band stage, during early phases of embryonic development. This work presents the first data on the postembryonic expression of a segmentation gene in a myriapod. Using real-time PCR, we analyzed engrailed expression patterns during the anamorphic stages of the centipede Lithobius peregrinus. A variation pattern in en RNA level during anamorphosis suggests that gene expression is precisely modulated during this period of development and that engrailed is mainly expressed in the posterior part of the body, in the newly differentiating segments of each stage. As anamorphosis is possibly the primitive segmentation mode in arthropods, the postembryonic en expression pattern documented here provides evidence for a conservation of en role in ontogeny, across the embryonic/postembryonic boundary, as well as in phylogeny, across the same boundary, but in the opposite direction, from primitive postembryonic expression to the more derived expression in clades with exclusively embryonic segmentation.  相似文献

The later juvenile ontogeny of the caudal plate of the early Ordovician pliomerid trilobite Hintzeia plicamarginis new species likely comprised an initial phase during which the rate of appearance of new segments subterminally exceeded that of segment release into the thorax, a short phase of constant segment numbers, and a later phase during which release occurred but in which no new segments appeared. A distinct terminal region became manifest in the second phase. During the second and third phases growth coefficients for individual segments were about 1.1--1.2 per instar. Although the shapes of segments varied during growth, the pattern of ontogenetic shape change appears to have been broadly similar among segments. This suggests an homonomous trunk segment morphology regardless of thoracic or caudal identity in maturity. These results imply that control of trunk exoskeletal segment appearance and articulation were decoupled in this trilobite, and that the terminal region had a distinct mature morphology. H. plicamarginis is described as a new species.  相似文献

The evolution of segmentation of centipede trunk and appendages   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The segmentation of centipedes is interpreted in the light of a biphasic model of segmentation (holomeric plus meromeric). The mid-body anomaly (e.g. in the alternating short and long terga, or in the sequence of segments with and without spiracles) is regarded as due to an early patterning of the embryo, occurring before the onset of meromeric segmentation and affecting a level within the fourth eosegment of the trunk. Comparisons with the Diplopoda suggest that genital structures such as millipede gonopods did probably develop originally at this spot, whose position remained marked even after the transition from a putatively progoneate to the current opisthogoneate condition of centipedes, perhaps following gene duplication and divergence of expression patterns of the paralogues. A new lower limit for the number of leg-bearing segments [27, in a male specimen of Schendylops oligopus (Pereira, Minelli & Barbieri,1995)] is established for Geophilomorpha. Coevolutionary trends involving the segmentation of the trunk, the segmentation of the appendages (especially the antennae), the postembryonic developmental schedule and the presence or absence of regeneration ability supports a recent view of the appendages as evolutionarily divergent duplicates of the main body axis.  相似文献

The Trilobita were characterized by a cephalic region in whichthe biomineralized exoskeleton showed relatively high morphologicaldifferentiation among a taxonomically stable set of well definedsegments, and an ontogenetically and taxonomically dynamic trunkregion in which both exoskeletal segments and ventral appendageswere similar in overall form. Ventral appendages were homonomousbiramous limbs throughout both the cephalon and trunk, exceptfor the most anterior appendage pair that was antenniform, preoral, and uniramous, and a posteriormost pair of antenniform cerci, known only in one species. In some clades trunk exoskeletalsegments were divided into two batches. In some, but not all,of these clades the boundary between batches coincided withthe boundary between the thorax and the adult pygidium. Therepeated differentiation of the trunk into two batches of segmentsfrom the homonomous trunk condition indicates an evolutionarytrend in aspects of body patterning regulation that was achievedindependently in several trilobite clades. The phylogeneticplacement of trilobites and congruence of broad patterns oftagmosis with those seen among extant arthropods suggest thatthe expression domains of trilobite cephalic Hox genes may haveoverlapped in a manner similar to that seen among extant arachnates. This, coupled with the fact that trilobites likely possessedten Hox genes, presents one alternative to a recent model inwhich Hox gene distribution in trilobites was equated to eightputative divisions of the trilobite body plan.  相似文献

Abstract: The morphology and ontogeny of the eodiscid trilobite Tsunyidiscus acutus Sun is described on the basis of numerous calcified specimens collected from the Lower Cambrian Shuijingtuo Formation in Yichang and Changyang, Hubei Province, South China. An ontogenetic series is established based on the articulated material including the previously unknown protaspides and meraspides (degrees 0 and 1). The material, revealing some prominent morphological changes such as the number of pygidial axial rings, genal spines retained throughout ontogeny and pygidial pleurae from furrowed to unfurrowed, enables a discussion on the trunk segmentation schedule, indicating that somitogenesis and tagmosis occurred independently during the ontogenetic development of T. acutus.  相似文献

Abstract: A large number of complete specimens together with numerous disarticulated sclerites of the eodiscinid trilobite Sinodiscus changyangensis Zhang in Zhou et al., 1977 have been collected from the lower Cambrian Shuijingtuo Formation in Changyang, Hubei Province, South China. An ontogenetic series is established based on the immature and mature exoskeletons including the previously unknown protaspides and meraspides, in particular. No further substages can be differentiated in the protaspid specimens herein. Changes that took place during the meraspid period include the addition of postcephalic segments and prominent pygidial larval notches in early meraspid development which became progressively less distinct and disappeared in degree 2. Two holaspid stages are recognized based on the addition of a new pygidial segment, indicating that the start of the holaspid phase preceded the onset of the epimorphic phase and accordingly, its developmental mode is attributed to the protarthrous pattern. The trunk segmentation schedule of S. changyangensis is discussed, which is similar to other primitive eodiscoid trilobites, that is, as the boundary between the thorax and pygidium migrated posteriorly, there is no change in the number of the trunk segments. The processes of liberation of the thoracic segment and segment insertion into the pygidium are separated from one another, and the two different mechanisms, somitogenesis and tagmosis, progress independently during the ontogenetic development of the postcephalic region of these primitive eodiscinids.  相似文献

Although trilobites have provided research subjects for more than two centuries, their head segmentation has remained unresolved. Four glabellar furrows (SO and S1–S3) marking the segmental boundaries are generally present in the cephalic axis, but there are trilobites with one more pair of furrows, the so‐called S4, in the cephalic axis, causing confusion in understanding trilobite head segmentation. Recent advances in developmental biology and palaeontology have shed light on the arthropod head problem, and thus, trilobite head segmentation can be reviewed in the light of this knowledge. Based on the information from the anatomy of exceptionally preserved trilobites and artiopodans closely related to trilobites, it is inferred that trilobite head contains five segments: the anteriormost ocular segment potentially associated with the hypostome, the antennal segment and the following three segments with walking legs. When present, the S4 furrows are situated where the eye ridges meet the cephalic axis of trilobites, indicating that the furrows are incised ‘within’ the anteriormost segment in trilobites with an anteriorly enlarged frontal lobe. Trilobites of the Order Redlichiida, the most primitive stock, show variable conditions in the frontal glabellar conditions, while in other more derived groups, the condition is rather constant. The frontal glabellar condition, therefore, could provide a clue to elucidate the unresolved Cambrian trilobite phylogeny and the Cambrian roots of the post‐Cambrian trilobites.  相似文献

We investigated the development of dorsoventral and longitudinalmusculature in all postembryonic stages of the kinorhynch Pycnophyeskielensis. Although the earliest stages have only 8 externallyseparated trunk segments, they already possess dorsoventralmuscles for 10 (prospective) trunk segments. The last, 11th,pair is added in the third juvenile stage. Longitudinal musculature,in contrast, is slower to develop and reaches its full lengthonly in the adult. In several juvenile individuals, single fibersproject from the longitudinal musculature into the followingsegments. In all juvenile stages, longitudinal muscles are continuousbetween segments, whereas in adults they are segmentally separatedfrom each other. Such late occurrence of a segmental patternin the longitudinal musculature is in contrast to patterns ofmuscle development in arthropods and annelids.  相似文献

Postembryonic development in the kinorhynch species Antygomonas incomitata was examined using scanning electron microscopy. The morphology of the six juvenile stages, J‐1 to J‐6, varies at numerous details, but they can also be distinguished by a few key characters. Juvenile stage 1 by its composition of only nine trunk segments; J‐2 by the combination of possessing 10 trunk segments, but no cuspidate spines on segment 9; J‐3 by the presence of cuspidate spines on segment 9, but only one pair of cuspidate spines on segment 8; J‐4 by the combination of 10 trunk segments only, but having two pairs of cuspidate spines on segment 8; J‐5 by possessing 11 trunk segments and same spine compositions as adults but is still maintaining postmarginal spiculae; J‐6 specimens closely resemble adults and are most easily identified by their reduced trunk lengths. New segments are formed in a growth zone in the anterior part of the terminal segment. The complete number of segments is reached in J‐5. Development of cuticular head and trunk structures are described through all postembryonic stages and following developmental patterns could be outlined: the mouth cone possesses outer oral styles from J‐1, but in J‐1 to J‐3, the styles alternate in size. Scalids of the introvert are added after each molt, and scalids appear earliest in the anterior rings, whereas scalids in more posterior rings are added in older postembryonic stages. The early J‐1 stage is poor in spines and sensory spots and both structures increase in number after each molt. The complete spine composition is reached in J‐4, whereas new sensory spots appear after all molts, inclusive the final one from J‐6 to adult. Sensory spots in the paraventral positions often appear as Type 3 sensory spots but are through development transformed to Type 2. This transformation happens earliest on the anterior segments. J. The postembryonic ontogeny of the kinorhynch Paracentrophyes praedictus is described by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The development of head scalids and trunk Characteristics has been studied. The first of 6 juvenile stages possesses 11 segments already. One segment each is added both in stages 2 and 5. The number of head scalids increases during development. Every scalid becomes visible as a spinose anlage in one stage and differentiates in the next stage. All head scalids in stage 1 represent anlagen of scalids. Late juvenile stages J-5 and J-6 express two different scalid patterns which do not seem to depend on the gender. Scalids and trunk segments develop in a subfrontal and a subcaudal growing zone, respectively. The presumed neotenic status of P. praedictus is rejected because this species exhibits the same number of juvenile stages as observed in all other Kinorhyncha studied. It is suggested that a weakly sclerotized, juvenile-like trunk cuticle as found, e.g. in adult P. praedictus represents the plesiomorphic characteristic within the Kinorhyncha; a thickened cuticle has probably evolved independently within both the cyclorhagid and the homalorhagid Kinorhyncha.  相似文献

A detailed investigation of the morphology and ontogeny of the redlichioid trilobite Eoredlichia intermediata (Bulletin of the Geological Society of China, 3–4, 1940, 333) from the lower Cambrian Yu'anshan Member of the Heilinpu Formation, in Kunming, Yunnan Province, southwest China, is presented. The new material comprises a relatively complete ontogenetic series ranging from the early meraspid to the holaspid period, which reveals more details on morphological variation such as the appearance of bacculae in some holaspid specimens, contraction and disappearance of fixigenal spines, and macropleural spines of the first and second thoracic segments, which are all documented for the first time and can also be used as developmental markers defining ontogenetic phases. Two distinct morphotypes, possibly an expression of intraspecific variation or sexual dimorphism, are distinguished by the morphology of pleural spines of the second thoracic segment in meraspid degree 14 and holaspides. The trunk segmentation schedule of E. intermediata is also discussed and conforms to the protarthrous developmental mode. The distinction of the thoracic region into two portions can be observed during late meraspid and early holaspid periods, which might be considered as a reference for a better understanding on the relationship of tagmosis and growth segmentation among the Cambrian redlichiid trilobites.  相似文献

Convergence and extension are gastrulation movements that participate in the establishment of the vertebrate body plan. Using new methods for quantifying convergence and extension movements of cell groups, we demonstrate that in wild-type embryos, dorsal convergence of lateral cells is initially slow, but speeds up between the end of the gastrula period and early segmentation. Convergence and extension movements of lateral cells in trilobite mutants are normal during the gastrula period but reduced by early segmentation. Morphometric studies revealed that during epiboly wild-type gastrulae become ovoid, whereas trilobite embryos remain rounder. By segmentation, trilobite embryos exhibit shorter, broader embryonic axes. The timing of these morphological defects correlates well with impaired cell movements, suggesting reduced convergence and extension are the main defects underlying the trilobite phenotype. Our gene expression, genetic, and fate mapping analyses show the trilobite mutation affects movements without altering dorsoventral patterning or cell fates. We propose that trilobite function is required for cell properties that promote increased speed of converging cells and extension movements in the dorsal regions of the zebrafish gastrula.  相似文献

Anterior head segmentation is governed by different regulatory mechanisms than those that control trunk segmentation in Drosophila. For segment polarity genes, both initial mode of activation as well as cross-regulatory interactions among them differ from the typical genetic circuitry in the trunk and are unique for each of the procephalic segments. In order to better understand the segment-specific gene network responsible for the procephalic expression of the earliest active segment polarity genes wingless and hedgehog, we started to identify and analyze cis-regulatory DNA elements of these genes. For hedgehog, we could identify a cis-regulatory element, ic-CRE, that mediates expression specifically in the posterior part of the intercalary segment and requires promoter-specific interaction for its function. The intercalary stripe is the last part of the metameric hedgehog expression pattern that appears during embryonic development, which probably reflects the late and distinct establishment of this segment. The identification of a cis-regulatory element that is specific for one head segment supports the mutant-based observation that the expression of segment polarity genes is governed by a unique gene network in each of the procephalic segments. This provides further indication that the anterior-most head segments represent primary segments, which are set up independently, in contrast to the secondary segments of the trunk, which resemble true repetitive units.  相似文献

In many arthropods, the development of the trunk region is a complex part of post-embryonic development. Consideration of fossil ontogeny provides an additional source of data and a broader evolutionary perspective on the evolution of arthropod body patterning. Here, I examine the development of the thoraco-pygidial exoskeleton of three related phacopine trilobites from the Upper Devonian according to the integrated ontogenetic scheme proposed by Hughes et al. Pygidial shields assigned to three ontogenetic series gave us the opportunity to further explore the evolutionary pattern of the trilobite segmentation. The analysis showed a different mode of development in two of three species and thus reveals variability between the related taxa. Comparison of the boundaries of different aspects of ontogenesis ratifies the diversity of the segmentation process among trilobites and even among related phacopine species. Results include (i) in a synarthromeric trunk condition recorded to date, there has consistently been a preceding ‘equilibrium’ phase for the late meraspid pygidium and (ii) two developmental modes, i.e. both hypoprotomeric development and synarthromeric development, occur contemporaneously in closely related taxa. Such developments suggest that aspects of segmental development such as segment accretion and segment articulation were able to vary in a labile manner.  相似文献

Geophilomorph centipedes show variation in segment number (a) between closely related species and (b) within and between populations of the same species. We have previously shown for a Scottish population of the coastal centipede Strigamia maritima that the temperature of embryonic development is one of the factors that affects the segment number of hatchlings, and hence of adults, as these animals grow epimorphically—that is, without postembryonic addition of segments. Here, we show, using temperature‐shift experiments, that the main developmental period during which embryos are sensitive to environmental temperature is surprisingly early, during blastoderm formation and before, or very shortly after, the onset of segmentation.  相似文献
