Patterns of estimates of oxygen flux (J) across the air–water interface of hypereutrophic Onondaga Lake, NY, U.S.A., are characterized for time scales ranging from diel to seasonal for an 8-month period. The analysis is supported by a high frequency (most often hourly) monitoring program, conducted with a robotic buoy, that included measurements of dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, and fluorometric chlorophyll a in the lake's surface waters, vertical profiles of DO through the epilimnion, and wind speed and solar radiance. The magnitude and direction of J is demonstrated to vary dramatically at diel, day-to-day, and seasonal time scales. Thus, large errors in estimates of J may result from extrapolating flux calculations made from short-term data to longer time periods. The variations in J were driven by variations in metabolic activity and meteorology, and were mediated by departures from equilibrium DO concentrations and wind-driven turbulence. Extended periods of high J values are shown to coincide with intervals of large departures from equilibrium DO concentrations, but day-to-day differences are driven mostly by variations in wind. A distinct diel pattern of J estimates is manifested for average conditions, with substantially higher J values during daylight hours. This pattern reflects the common diel patterns of the drivers of both higher DO oversaturation and wind speed over those hours. It is demonstrated that the magnitude of J is substantial relative to net changes in the epilimnetic DO pool, and thus must be accommodated accurately in estimates of primary production and community respiration that are to be based on diel monitoring of DO in the water columns of productive lakes.  相似文献

Influence of soil temperature on methane emission from rice paddy fields   总被引:18,自引:2,他引:16
Methane emission rates from an Italian rice paddy field showed diel and seasonal variations. The seasonal variations were not closely related to soil temperatures. However, the dieL changes of CH4 fluxes were significantly correlated with the diel changes of the temperature in a particular soil depth. The soil depths with the best correlations between CH4 flux and temperature were shallow (1–5cm) in May and June, deep (10–15cm) in June and July, and again shallow (1–5 cm) in August. Apparent activation energies (Ea) calculated from these correlations using the Arrhenius model were relatively low (50–150 kJ mol–1) in May and June, but increased to higher values (80–450 kJ mol–1) in August. In the laboratory, CH4 emission from two rice cultures incubated at temperatures between 20 and 38°C showed E . values of 41 and 53 kJ mol–1) Methane production in anoxic paddy soil suspensions incubated between 7 and 43°C showed E values between 53 and 132 kJ mol–1 with an average value of 85 kJ mol–1) and in pure cultures of hydrogenotrophic methanogenic bacteria E a values between 77 and 173 (average 126) kJ mol–1. It is suggested that diel changes of soil properties other than temperature affect CH4 emission rates, e.g. diel changes in root exudation or in efficiency of CH4 oxidation in the rhizosphere.  相似文献

A field study was conducted during the months of October, January, May, and July (1979–80) to examine the diel variations in dissolved O2 (DO), pH, dissolved CO2, bicarbonate and carbonate alkalinity, NH4-N, NO3-N, and PO4-P concentration, and conductivity (EC) of the water in six aquatic systems. Water in hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) ponds showed very little or no diel or seasonal variations in DO, pH, dissolved CO2, and bicarbonate alkalinity. Dissolved O2 concentration of the water under floating hyacinth cover was in the range of 0.2–3.0 µg/ml, while dissolved CO2 levels were in the range of 10–35 µg/ml. In the aquatic systems with no floating vegetation, i.e., elodea (Egeria densa) pond, cattail (Typha sp.) pond, control pond (filamentous algae and Chara spp.), and eutrophic lake (algae in Lake Apopka), DO and pH of the water increased during mid-day and decreased during the night. Dissolved O2 levels in these ponds were in the range of 5–20 µg/ml during mid-day and 2–8 µg/ml during the night, while pH of the water was in the range of 8–9.5 during mid-day and decreased to 7–8 during the night. An inverse relationship was observed between bicarbonate and carbonate alkalinity of the water in the aquatic systems with no floating vegetation while no carbonates were detected in the water with floating hyacinth plants. Ammonium N, NO3-N and PO4-P concentration of the water in these aquatic systems showed very little or no diel variations.Florida Agricultural Experiment Stations Journal Series No. 2788.  相似文献

Nitrate removal rates and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels were evaluated in small batch-mode wetland mesocosms with two different plant species, cattail (Typha spp.) and bulrush (Scirpus spp.), and associated mineral-dominated sediment collected from a mature treatment wetland. Nitrate loss in both cattail and bulrush mesocosms was first-order in nature. First-order volumetric rate constants (kV) were 0.30 d−1 for cattail and 0.21 d−1 for bulrush and rates of nitrate loss were significantly different between plant treatments (p < 0.005). On an areal basis, maximum rates of nitrate removal were around 500 mg N/(m2 d) early in the experiment when nitrate levels were high (> 15 mg N/L). Areal removal rates were on average 25% higher in cattail versus bulrush mesocosms. DO in mesocosm water was significantly higher in bulrush versus cattail (p < 0.001). DO in bulrush generally ranged between 0.5 and 2 mg/L, while DO in cattail mesocosms was consistently below 0.3 mg/L. Based on cumulative frequency analysis, DO exceeded 1 mg/L around 50% of the time in bulrush, but only 2% of the time in cattail. DO in bulrush exhibited a statistically significant diel cycle with DO peaks in the late afternoon and DO minimums in the early morning hours. Difference in nitrate removal rates between wetland plant treatments may have been due to differing plant carbon quality. Cattail litter, which has been shown in other studies to exhibit superior biodegradability, may have enhanced biological denitrification by fueling heterotrophic microbial activity, which in turn may have depressed DO levels, a prerequisite for denitrification. Our results show that the cattail is more effective than bulrush for treating nitrate-dominant wastewaters.  相似文献

Sub-arctic Lake Myvatn is one of the most productive lakes in the Northern Hemisphere, despite an ice cover of 190 days per year. In situ, transparent and dark flux chambers were used for direct measurements of benthic fluxes of dissolved oxygen, nutrients, silica and certain metals, taking into account primary production and mineral precipitation. The range of benthic flux observed for dissolved oxygen (DO), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), ammonium, ortho-P, silica, calcium, and magnesium was –45.89 to 187.03, –99.32 to 50.96, –1.30 to 1.27, –0.51 to 0.39, –62.3 to 9.3, –33.82 to 16.83, and –23.93 to 7.52 mmol m–2 d–1, respectively (negative value indicating flux towards the lake bottom). Low benthic NH4 + and ortho-P fluxes were likely related to benthic algal production, and aerobic bottom water. Ortho-P fluxes could also be controlled by the dissolution/precipitation of ferrihydrite, calcite, and perhaps hydroxyapatite. The negative silica fluxes were caused by diatom frustule synthesis. Benthic calcium and magnesium fluxes could be related to algal production and dissolution/precipitation of calcium and/or Ca,Mg-carbonates. Fluxes of DO, DIC, pH and alkalinity were related to benthic biological processes. It is likely that some of the carbon precipitates as calcite at the high pH in the summer and dissolves at neutral pH in the winter. Mean of the ratio of gross benthic DIC consumption and gross benthic DO production was 0.94 ± 0.18, consistent with algal production using NH4 + as N source. During the summer weeks the water column pH remains above 10. This high pH is caused by direct and indirect utilisation of CO2, HCO3 , CO3 –2, H4SiO4 ° and H3SiO4 by primary producers. This study shows that in shallow lakes at high latitudes, where summer days are long and the primary production is mostly by diatoms, the pH is forced to very high values. The high pH could lead to a positive feedback for the Si flux, but negative feedback for the NH4 + flux.  相似文献

Annual inputs of symbiotic N2-fixation associated with 3 species of alpine Trifolium were estimated in four alpine communities differing in resource supplies. We hypothesized that fixation rates would vary according to the degree of N, P, and water limitation of production, with the higher rates of fixation in N limited communities (dry meadow, moist meadow) and lower rates in P and water limited communities (wet meadow, fellfield). To estimate N2-fixation rates, natural abundance of N isotopes (15N) were measured in field collected Trifolium and reference plants and in Trifolium plants grown in N-free medium in a growth chamber. All three Trifolium species relied on a large proportion of atmospherically-fixed N2 to meet their N requirements, ranging from 70 to 100%. There were no apparent differences in the proportion of plant N derived from fixation among the communities, but differences in the contribution of the Trifolium species to community cover resulted in a wide range of annual N inputs from fixation, from 127 mg m–2 year–1 in wet meadows to 810 mg m–2 year–1 in fellfields. Annual spatially integrated input of symbiotic N2-fixation to Niwot Ridge, Colorado was estimated at 490 mg m–2 year–1 (5 kg ha–1 year–1), which is relatively high in the context of estimates of net N mineralization and N deposition.  相似文献

Swimming speed, angular correlation and expected displacement were measured in juvenile summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus acclimated to either oxygen saturation (c. 7·8 mg O2 l?1; saturation‐acclimated fish) or diel‐cycling hypoxia (cycling between 11·0 and 2·0 mg O2 l?1) for 10 days and subsequently exposed to more severe diel‐cycling hypoxia (cycling between 7·0 and 0·4 mg O2 l?1). Saturation‐acclimated P. dentatus exhibited an active response to declining dissolved oxygen (DO) by increasing swimming speed, angular correlation and expected displacement to peak levels at 1·4 mg O2 l?1 that were 3·5, 5·5 and 4·2 fold, respectively, greater than those at DO saturation. Diel‐cycling hypoxia‐acclimated P. dentatus also exhibited an active response to declining DO, although it was relatively less pronounced. Diel‐cycling hypoxia‐acclimated P. dentatus swimming speed, however, still doubled as DO decreased from 7·0 to 2·8 mg O2 l?1. Diel‐cycling hypoxia‐acclimated P. dentatus did not recover as well from low DO exposure as did saturation‐acclimated fish. This was reflected in their relatively more random swimming (low angular correlation between successive moves) and poor maintenance of rank order between individuals during the recovery phase. Even saturation‐acclimated P. dentatus did not resume swimming at speeds observed at saturation until DO was 4·2 mg O2 l?1. Paralichthys dentatus were very sensitive to decreasing DO, even at DO levels that were not lethal or growth limiting. This sensitivity and their poor recovery may preclude juvenile P. dentatus from using highly productive nursery habitats affected by diel‐cycling hypoxia.  相似文献

Primary productivity and respiration were measured in Rattlesnake Springs, Washington, using the upstream-downstream diel pH-CO2 curve and harvest methods.Daily Pg and Pn rates averaged 8.7 and 0.9, 0.6 and 0.3, and 9.3 and 1.2 g C m–2 d–1 for periphyton, watercress, and total community, respectively. Average photosynthetic efficiencies (%, P n Lt–1) were approximately 0.22 and 0.07 for periphyton and watercress, respectively. Annual community Pg was 2 700 g C m–2 a–1 and was highest for periphyton (2 526 g C m–2 a–1). Periphyton Pn (356 g C m–2 a–1) exceeded that of watercress (87 g C m–2 a–1). Community R was 2 257 g C m–2 a–1, and was highest for periphyton (2 170 g C m2 a–1).Desert streams appear to be enigmas in terms of their relationship between autotrophy and heterotrophy and their ability to be net importers or exporters of organic matter. The fact that they can be autotrophic and net importers of organic matter is probably related to the characteristic flash-flooding of desert streams, and emphasizes the necessity of examining these systems over more than a single annual cycle.  相似文献

This study deals with a recently found phenomenon in the northern Baltic Sea: the occurrence of the dinoflagellate Dinophysis acuminata in the deep water below the thermocline. This was first observed in July 2001 at the station BY 15 in the Gotland Deep, where a sharp and intensive chlorophyll fluorescence signal was encountered at 77 m depth. The fluorescence peak was due to a dinoflagellate community dominated by Dinophysis acuminata (approximately 18 000 cells l−1). The survival of this community was followed in laboratory incubations in low light (20 μE m−2 s−1) and low temperature (+5 °C). After 5 weeks incubation, 67–84% of the initial cell abundance was lost, while few D. acuminata cells survived up to 24 weeks in the original sample. During the incubation, the fluorescence signal of the cells became fainter and the chloroplasts smaller and aggregated. On two occasions a D. acuminata cell was found attached to a smaller cell by a thin cytoplasm strand, possibly indicating mixotrophic behavior. During the following summer (2002), the photosynthetic efficiency of D. acuminata collected from thermocline layers of few stations and from the nitracline (75–80 m) at one station was studied in photosynthesis irradiance (P–E) incubations. Photosynthetic activity occurred in all populations, with differences in their photosynthetic carbon uptake rates. Photosynthesis of D. acuminata populations was saturated between 250 and 500 μE m−2 s−1; maximum cell-specific carbon uptake rates (Pm) ranged from 160–925 pg C cell−1 h−1. The Pm-rates in populations originating below the thermocline and in an artificially darkened population were markedly lower than in populations from upper water layers. The varying maximum photosynthetic rates of these populations may reflect their history, e.g. time spent in different light environments.  相似文献

Summary The metabolic and cardiac responses to temperature were studied in two species (four subspecies) of western chipmunks (genusEutamias), inhabiting boreal and alpine environments. A specially designed (Fig. 1) implantable biopential radiotransmitter was used to measure heart rate in unrestrained animals. The estimated basal metabolic rates (EBMR) were 1.78 (E. minimus borealis), 1.64 (E. m. oreocetes), 1.50 (E. m. operarius), and 1.69 ml O2 g–1 h–1 (E. amoenus luteiventris), or 839, 752, 698, and 628 ml O2 kg–0.75 h–1, respectively, for the four subspecies (Table 1). The two alpine species (E.m.or. andE.m.op.) had significantly lower EBMR than both of their boreal counterparts. The EBMR from all animals are 120–135% of the predicted values based on body weights of the animals. The thermal neutral zone for the four subspecies ranged from 23.5 to 32°C and the minimum thermal conductances were 0.113, 0.111, 0.112 and 0.112 ml O2 g–1 h–1 °C–1, respectively, or 54.4, 54.0, 50.4 and 52.1 ml O2 kg–0.75 h–1 °C–1, respectively (Fig. 2). No interspecific diffence in conductance was observed. These values are 72 to 85% of their weight specific values. The body temperature ranged between 35.0 and 39.5°C and was usually maintained between 36 and 38°C in all subspecies between ambient temperatures of 3 and 32°C. The estimated basal heart rates were 273, 296, 273 and 264 beats/min, respectively, for the four subspecies, 49–55% of their predicted weight specific values. The resultant oxygen pulses (metabolic rate/heart rate) were 5.49, 4.50, 4.48 and 5.56×10–3 ml O2/beat, respectively, which are 2 to 2.4 times their weight specific values (Table 2).The observed reduction of basal heart rate without the corresponding decreases of basal metabolic rate and body temperature indicate sufficient compensatory increases in stroke volume and/or A-V oxygen difference at rest. Such cardiovascular modifications provide extra reserves when demand for aerobic metabolism rises during bursts of activity typically observed in the western chipmunk.Abbreviations A-V arterio-venous - EBMR estimated basal metabolic rate (ml O2 g–1 h–1) - HR heart rate (beats/min) - MR metabolic rate (ml O2 g–1 h–1) - OP oxygen pulse (ml O2/heart beat) - Ta, Tb ambient and body temperature (°C)  相似文献

Estimates of bacterial production based on total trichloroacetic acid (TCA)-precipitable [methyl-3H]thymidine incorporation and frequency of dividing cell (FDC) techniques were compared to sediment respiration rates in Lake George, New York. Bacterial growth rates based on thymidine incorporation ranged from 0.024 to 0.41 day–1, while rates based on FDC ranged from 1.78 to 2.48 day–1. Respiration rates ranged from 0.11 to 1.8mol O2·hour–1·g dry weight sediment–1. Thymidine incorporation yielded production estimates which were in reasonable agreement with respiration rates. Production estimates based on FDC were 4- to 190-fold higher than those predicted from respiration rates.  相似文献

Walker Lake (area = 140 km2, Z mean = 19.3 m) is a large, terminal lake in western Nevada. As a result of anthropogenic desiccation, the lake has decreased in volume by 75% since the 1880s. The hypolimnion of the lake, now too small to meet the oxygen demand exerted by decaying matter, rapidly goes anoxic after thermal stratification. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to examine the feasibility of using oxygenation to avoid hypolimnetic anoxia and subsequent accumulation of ammonia in the hypolimnion, and to estimate the required DO capacity of an oxygenation system for the lake. The accumulation of inorganic nitrogen in water overlaying sediment was measured in laboratory chambers under various DO levels. Rates of ammonia accumulation ranged from 16.8 to 23.5 mg-N m–2 d–1 in chambers with 0, 2.5 and 4.8 mg L–1 DO, and ammonia release was not significantly different between treatments. Beggiatoa sp. on the sediment surface of the moderately aerated chambers (2.5 and 4.8 mg L–1 DO) indicated that oxygen penetration into sediment was minimal. In contrast, ammonia accumulation was reversed in chambers with 10 mg L–1 DO, where oxygen penetration into sediment stimulated nitrification and denitrification. Ammonia accumulation in anoxic chambers (18.1 and 20.6 mg-N m–2 d–1) was similar to ammonia accumulation in the hypolimnion from July through September of 1998 (16.5 mg-N m–2 d–1). Areal hypolimnetic oxygen demand averaged 1.2 g O2 m–2 d–1 for 1994–1996 and 1998. Sediment oxygen demand (SOD) determined in experimental chambers averaged approximately 0.14 g O2 m–2 d–1. Continuous water currents at the sediment-water interface of 5–6 cm s–1 resulted in a substantial increase in SOD (0.38 g O2 m–2 d–1). The recommended oxygen delivery capacity of an oxygenation system, taking into account increased SOD due to mixing in the hypolimnion after system start-up, is 215 Mg d–1. Experimental results suggest that the system should maintain high levels of DO at the sediment-water interface (10 mg L–1) to insure adequate oxygen penetration into the sediments, and a subsequent inhibition of ammonia accumulation in the hypolimnion of the lake.  相似文献

The ecophysiological characteristics of fine roots of mature forest plants are poorly understood because of difficulties of measurement. We explored a root in-growth approach to measure respiration and nitrate uptake of woody plant roots in situ. Roots of seven species were grown into sand-filled chambers. Root-associated respiration was measured as CO 2 emission on four dates and nitrate uptake was quantified using 15N. All the roots were younger than 3 months at the time of measurement. Fine root respiration measured over the temperature range of 14.5–15.5 °C averaged 18.9–36.5 nmol gDM –1 s –1 across species. Nitrate uptake rates by these fine roots (1.3–6.8 nmol gDM –1 s –1) were comparable to other studies of forest trees. The root respiration rates were several times higher than measurements on detached roots of mature trees, concurring with literature observations that young roots respire much more rapidly than older roots. The root in-growth approach appears promising for providing information on the metabolic activity of fine roots of mature forest trees growing in soil.  相似文献

This study was conducted to examine the effects of varying N rates and cropping systems (mixedversus pure stand) on the suitability of oats (Avena sativa L.) for estimating N2 fixed in sequentially harvested vetch (Vicia sativa L.) over two growing seasons (1984–85 and 1985–86). The N rates were, 20 and 100 kg N ha–1 in 1984–85 and 15 and 60 kg N ha–1 in 1985–86. In the 1984–85 season, vetch at maturity derived 76 and 63% N from fixation at the high and low N rates respectively. The corresponding values for the second season were 66 and 42%. Except in the 1985–86 season when some significantly higher values of % N2 fixed were estimated by using the reference crop grown at the higher (A-value approach) than at the lower N rate (isotope-dilution approach), both approaches resulted in similar measurements of N2 fixed. In the 1984–85 season, similar values of N2 fixed were obtained using either the pure or mixed stand oats reference crops. Although in the 1985–86 season, the mixed reference crop occasionally estimated lower % N2 fixed than pure oats, total N2 fixed estimates were always similar (P<0.05). Thus, in general, N fertilization and cropping system of the reference crop did not significantly influence estimates of N2 fixation.  相似文献

Benthic community respiration rates of profundal sediments of Fuschlsee (37.6 mg · O2 · m–2 · h–1 — eutrophic), Mondsee (40.19 mg · O2 · m–2 · h–1 — eutrophic) and Attersee (11.5 mg · O2 · m–2 · h–1 — oligo-mesotrophic) were measuredin situ, and in cores. By exposing the sediments to different oxygen levels in the laboratory it was found that benthic community metabolism reduced with decreasing oxygen concentrations. The slope of the regression lines, relating oxygen uptake rates to oxygen concentrations, differed significantly for the different sites investigated. These results were closely related to the trophic conditions of the lakes.  相似文献

Movement of water overlying the sediments has not been taken into consideration in most of the experiments conducted to estimate the dissolved material flux from the sediment. Even in recent experiments that incorporated the stirring motion, interpretation of the data is difficult, because the mixing rate used may be different from actual mixing rate in the field. We propose a method to estimate the in situ mixing rate that should be used to set the flow rate in a flow-through core incubation system. The flow rate is calculated from the vertical mixing rate of the water that is deduced from the heat diffusivity. Release rates of NO3+NO2–N obtained from our flow-through incubation system were higher by 1–3 orders of magnitude than those from the conventional diffusion calculation method that estimates the flux from the gradient of nutrient concentration across the sediment-water interface. Increase in NO3+NO2–N flux is considered to be due to intensification of the nitrification process as a result of an increase in dissolved oxygen (DO) supply with the motion of water. DO supply is also considered to be an important factor controlling macrofaunal abundance and consequently their excretory contributions to the fluxes of dissolved organic nitrogen as well as NH4–N. From this point of view, we strongly recommend the application of heat and mass balance theory to estimate nitrogen flux using a flow-through experimental system.  相似文献

S. cerevisiae was grown in a blackstrap molasses containing medium in batch and fed-batch cultures. The following parameters were varied: pH (from 4.0 to 6.5), dissolved oxygen (DO) (from 0 to 5.0 mg O2L–1) and sucrose feeding rate. When glucose concentration (S) was higher than 0.5 g L–1 a reduction in the specific invertase activity of intact cells (v) and an oscillatory behavior of v values during fermentation were observed. Both the invertase reduction and the oscillatory behavior of v values could be related to the glucose inhibitory effect on invertase biosynthesis. The best culture conditions for attainingS. cerevisiae cells suitable for invertase production were: temperature=30°C; pH=5.0; DO=3.3 mg O2L–1; (S)=0.5 g L–1 and sucrose added into the fermenter according to the equations: (V–Vo)=t2/16 or (V–Vo)=(Vf–Vo)·(e0.6t–1)/10.This work was supported by FAPESP  相似文献

Landscape patterns of CH4 fluxes in an alpine tundra ecosystem   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We measured CH4 fluxes from three major plant communities characteristic of alpine tundra in the Colorado Front Range. Plant communities in this ecosystem are determined by soil moisture regimes induced by winter snowpack distribution. Spatial patterns of CH4 flux during the snow-free season corresponded roughly with these plant communities. InCarex-dominated meadows, which receive the most moisture from snowmelt, net CH4 production occurred. However, CH4 production in oneCarex site (seasonal mean=+8.45 mg CH4 m–2 d–1) was significantly larger than in the otherCarex sites (seasonal means=–0.06 and +0.05 mg CH4 m–2 d–1). This high CH4 flux may have resulted from shallower snowpack during the winter. InAcomastylis meadows, which have an intermediate moisture regime, CH4 oxidation dominated (seasonal mean=–0.43 mg CH4 m–2 d–1). In the windsweptKobresia meadow plant community, which receive the least amount of moisture from snowmelt, only CH4 oxidation was observed (seasonal mean=–0.77 mg CH4 m–2 d–1). Methane fluxes correlated with a different set of environmental factors within each plant community. In theCarex plant community, CH4 emission was limited by soil temperature. In theAcomastylis meadows, CH4 oxidation rates correlated positively with soil temperature and negatively with soil moisture. In theKobresia community, CH4 oxidation was stimulated by precipitation. Thus, both snow-free season CH4 fluxes and the controls on those CH4 fluxes were related to the plant communities determined by winter snowpack.  相似文献

The leopard shark, Triakis semifasciata, regularly resides in California's Tomales Bay, which is characterized by thermally different regions ranging from 10°C to 26°C during the summer. Past studies have shown that leopard sharks feed on benthic invertebrate prey similar to that of the sympatric bat ray, Myliobatis californica. Fishes' metabolic (oxygen consumption) rates typically increase with temperature increases, and we measured leopard sharks' metabolic responses and sensitivity to ambient temperature, using flow-through respirometry. Leopard shark oxygen consumption rate increased with increasing temperature, over a range of 12–24°C, with a typical temperature sensitivity (Q10 = 2.51). Whereas bat rays use a highly temperature-sensitive metabolism to efficiently feed (in warmer waters) and digest (in cooler waters) during different phases of the diel cycle, leopard sharks possess a more typical metabolic temperature sensitivity that allows for high-tide foraging, throughout the diel cycle.  相似文献

Observations of near-bottom populations of Karenia brevis suggest that these cells may derive nutrients from the sediment–water interface. Cells undergoing a metabolic-mediated migration may be in close proximity to enhanced concentrations of nutrients associated with the sediment during at least a fraction of their diel cycle. In this study, the growth, uptake and assimilation rates of ammonium, nitrate, and urea by K. brevis were examined on a diel basis to better understand the potential role of these nutrients in the near-bottom ecology of this species. Three strains of K. brevis, C6, C3, and CCMP 2229, were grown under 12:12 light dark cycle under 30 μmol photons m−2 s−1 delivered to the surface plain of batch cultures. Nitrogen uptake was evaluated using 15N tracer techniques and trichloroacetic acid extraction was used to evaluate the quantity of nitrogen (N) assimilated into cell protein. Growth rates ranged from a low of 0.12 divisions day−1 for C6 and C3 grown on nitrate to a high of 0.18 divisions day−1 for C3 grown on urea. Diurnal maximum uptake rates, ρmax, varied from 0.41 pmol-N cell−1 h−1 for CCMP 2229 grown on nitrate, to 1.29 pmol-N cell−1 h−1 for CCMP 2229 grown on urea. Average nocturnal uptake rates were 29% of diurnal rates for nitrate, 103% of diurnal uptake rates for ammonium and 56% of diurnal uptake rates for urea. Uptake kinetic parameters varied between substrates, between strains and between day and night measurements. Highest maximum uptake rates were found for urea for strains CCMP2229 and C3 and for ammonium for strain C6. Rates of asmilation into protein also varied day and night, but overall were highest for urea. The comparison of maximal uptake rates as well as assimilation efficiencies indicate that ammonium and urea are utilized (taken up and assimilated) more than twice was fast as nitrate on a diel basis.  相似文献
