Bryothinusa spp. are common marine insect in Hong Kong. They occur in the intertidal zone of sandy shores between 0.6 and 1.2 m tide level. They emerge when the tide recedes, possibly to mate and feed, then burrow again at the advance of the incoming tide.Bryothinusa has a special respiratory apparatus for long submersions and therefore is able to inhabit the changeable intertidal zone where the competition with other living organisms is comparatively low. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. The morphology and infraciliature of two new marine oligotrich ciliates, Novistrombidium sinicum n. sp. and Novistrombidium orientale n. sp., isolated from a mangrove wetland near Guangzhou, southern China, were studied from live and protargol-stained specimens. Novistrombidium sinicum is different from its congeners by the combination of the following characters: three posteriorly directed thigmotactic membranelles, one ellipsoidal macronucleus, the extrusomes equidistantly arranged, and the ventral kinety commencing below the right end of the girdle kinety. The small-sized N. orientale can be separated from its congeners by two posteriorly directed thigmotactic membranelles, one ellipsoidal macronucleus, the extrusomes equidistantly arranged, and the ventral kinety commencing below the right end of the girdle kinety. 相似文献

The synonymity of some Amphiporus species is discussed. Amphiporus falklandicus Wheeler, 1934, A. pusillus Punnett, 1903, Nipponnemertes bergendali (Gering, 1912), N. danae (Friedrich, 1957) and Wheeler's specimens of A. gerlachei Burger, 1904 and A. lecointei Burger, 1904 are found to be synonymous with N. pulcher , while A. mesosorus Verrill, 1892, A. arcticus Punnett, 1901 and A. thompsoni Punnett, 1901 are separated from the discussion of synonymity with this species. A summary of the knowledge of the geographical distribution of N. pulcher is given. The species A. africanus Wheeler, 1940, A. magnus Punnett, 1903, A. marioni Hubrecht, 1887, A. schollaerti Wheeler, 1934 and A. scoresbyi Wheeler, 1934 are transferred to the genus Nipponnemertes Friedrich, 1968. 相似文献

Actinoporus elongatus is a widely distributed, tropical, intertidal anemone from the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean regions. Its recorded occurrences are disjunct and its feeding and reproductive ecology have not previously been described in detail. A population of this sand-dwelling species was studied for one year at Shelly Bay, Queensland, Australia. Individuals were found to be randomly distributed within the study site at a density of 42 anemones per hectare. No immigration, juvenile recruitment or mortality was observed. Histological analysis indicated a protracted period of gamete maturity during the summer months, and that the sex ratio was 1:1. A. elongatus is an opportunistic feeder with two distinct feeding methods — actinopharyngeal eversion and a newly described trapdoor response. Ciliary currents on the tentacular crown and oral disk were used mainly for cleaning and sand removal.Department of Zoology, James Cook University of North QueenslandDepartment of Marine Biology, James Cook University of North QueenslandDepartment of Marine Biology, James Cook University of North Queensland 相似文献

The activity of and consumption of organic material by the sand-bubbler crab Dotilla fenestrata was studied over neap and spring tides on a sheltered sand bank close to the mouth of the warm, temperate Kowie Estuary, South Africa. Crabs emerged from their burrows only after the tide receded, and it was light. Time to emergence therefore varied from about 30 minutes to three hours after exposure, depending on the time of low water in the early morning vs at midday. General activity of the crab population was longer on a spring tide (about five hours) than on a neap tide (about three hours). Maximum densities of active crabs were 140 m–2 and 41 m–2 on spring and neap tides, respectively. After emergence, crabs spent 60% to 80% of their time feeding. In the Kowie Estuary, D. fenestrata produced between 7 and 12 pseudofaecal pellets, average weight 0.0358 g per pellet, per minute. These pellets had a significantly lower organic and chlorophyll a content than the substratum, and it was estimated that crabs removed about 25% of the organic content from the sediment. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This is the first ultrastructural study of the development of a marine actinosporean and of a species belonging to the genus Sphaeractinomyxon Caullery & Mesnil, 1904. S. ersei n. sp. is described from a limnodriloidine oligochaete, Doliodrilus diverticulatus Erséus, 1985, from Moreton Bay. Queensland, Australia. Development is asynchronous, there being all stages from two-celled pansporoblasts through to mature spores present simultaneously within a host. Spores develop in groups of eight within pansporoblasts in the coelom and when mature are located also in the intestinal lumen. The primordial spore envelope and sporoplasm develop separately in the pansporoblast until the polar filament is formed within the polar capsule and the capsulogenic cell cytoplasm has begun to degrade. The sporoplasm then enters the spore through a separated valve junction. Mature spores are triradially symmetrical with three centrally located polar capsules and a single binucleate sporoplasm with about 46 germ cells. Swellings or projections of the epispore do not occur when spores exit the host and contact sea water. 相似文献

Halosarpheia unicellularis sp. nov. is described from decayed attached wood ofAvicennia marina collected from two mangrove sites in the Red Sea, Egypt. The ascomycete is compared with other marine taxa having ascospores
with polar unfurling appendages. It is also compared with other marine genera with oval, round or ellipsoid hyaline, unicellular
ascospores, but for which appendages have not been reported. Molecular data confirms the assignment of the fungus toHalosarpheia which forms a clade with the type speciesHalosarpheia fibrosa. 相似文献

Two marine urostylid ciliates, Anteholosticha multicirrata n. sp. and Anteholosticha pulchra (Kahl, 1932) Berger, 2003, were collected from South Korea. These species were identified based on morphology, morphogenesis, and SSU rRNA gene sequence comparison. Anteholosticha multicirrata n. sp. is characterized by the following features: body size 90–125 × 30–45 μm in vivo, shape slender to ellipsoidal in outline, with yellow‐greenish cortical granules distributed along and between dorsal kineties and cirri; single contractile vacuole positioned on left at mid‐body; three frontal, five to seven frontoterminal, one buccal, one to two pretransverse and four to six transverse cirri; three complete dorsal kineties; one left and one right marginal cirral row; about 117 macronuclear nodules; and three to four micronuclei observed during morphogenesis. In addition, based on the observations of morphogenesis, we found that A. pulchra has pretransverse cirri, which were not described in detail in previous studies. Nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene was used to analyse their phylogenetic relationship, and the gene tree supports that the genus Anteholosticha is a highly polyphyletic group. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. The urosylid genus Pseudoamphisiella was established by Song (1996) with hitherto only two known congeners. In the present work, the morphology and infraciliature of a new member, Pseudoamphisiella quadrinucleata n. sp., a form with conspicuous alveolar layer and four macronuclear nodules isolated from the coastal waters both near Hong Kong and near Guangzhou, South China were investigated using living observation and protargol silver impregnation methods. Pseudoamphisiella quadrinucleata differs from other two known forms mainly by the number of macronuclear nodules: constantly four vs. two in Pseudoamphisiella alveolata and 24–57 in Pseudoamphisiella lacazei. To support this, the sequence of the small subunit rDNA of P. quadrinucleata n. sp. showed 14 and 74 nucleotides in comparison with that of the two known congeners, respectively, which hence firmly supports the validity of the new species. 相似文献

The diet and feeding habits of the African electric catfish Malapterurus electricus in their natural habitat in Lake Kainji, and in the River Niger, downstream of Kainji dam, Nigeria, have been described and compared. The study showed the electric catfish is a voracious piscivore. It feeds on cichlids, clupeids, schilbeids and other available fish species. From the size distribution, numbers and composition of the small prey fish species examined in electric catfish stomachs, it was inferred that the powerful high-frequency electric organ discharge volleys serve as major predatory mechanism. 相似文献

A novel actinomycete, strain HMC10T, was isolated from a soil sample taken from the banks of the Gamka River in the Swartberg Nature Reserve, Western Cape Province,
South Africa. Strain HMC10T was identified as a member of the genus Nonomuraea by a polyphasic approach. Strain HMC10T could be differentiated from other members of the genus Nonomuraea on the basis of physiology and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. DNA-DNA hybridization further differentiated strain HMC10T from its nearest phylogenetic neighbour, Nonomuraea turkmeniaca NRRL B-16246T (4.5 ± 3.8% DNA relatedness). Strain HMC10T exhibited weak antibiosis against Mycobacterium aurum A+, but none against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37RvT. The name Nonomuraea candida is proposed, with the type strain HMC10T (= DSM 45086T = NRRL B-24552T).
The GenBank accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of Nonomuraea candida HMC10T is DQ285421. 相似文献

The South African invasive legume Dipogon lignosus (Phaseoleae) produces nodules with both determinate and indeterminate characteristics in New Zealand (NZ) soils. Ten bacterial isolates produced functional nodules on D. lignosus. The 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences identified one isolate as Bradyrhizobium sp., one isolate as Rhizobium sp. and eight isolates as Burkholderia sp. The Bradyrhizobium sp. and Rhizobium sp. 16S rRNA sequences were identical to those of strains previously isolated from crop plants and may have originated from inocula used on crops. Both 16S rRNA and DNA recombinase A (recA) gene sequences placed the eight Burkholderia isolates separate from previously described Burkholderia rhizobial species. However, the isolates showed a very close relationship to Burkholderia rhizobial strains isolated from South African plants with respect to their nitrogenase iron protein (nifH), N-acyltransferase nodulation protein A (nodA) and N-acetylglucosaminyl transferase nodulation protein C (nodC) gene sequences. Gene sequences and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) PCR and repetitive element palindromic PCR (rep-PCR) banding patterns indicated that the eight Burkholderia isolates separated into five clones of one strain and three of another. One strain was tested and shown to produce functional nodules on a range of South African plants previously reported to be nodulated by Burkholderia tuberum STM678T which was isolated from the Cape Region. Thus, evidence is strong that the Burkholderia strains isolated here originated in South Africa and were somehow transported with the plants from their native habitat to NZ. It is possible that the strains are of a new species capable of nodulating legumes. 相似文献

In an effort to broaden our understanding of the biodiversity and distribution of gregarines infecting crustaceans, this study describes two new species of gregarines, Thiriotia hyperdolphinae n. sp. and Cephaloidophora oradareae n. sp., parasitizing a deep sea amphipod (Oradarea sp.). Amphipods were collected using the ROV Hyper‐Dolphin at a depth of 855 m while on a cruise in Sagami Bay, Japan. Gregarine trophozoites and gamonts were isolated from the gut of the amphipod and studied with light and scanning electron microscopy, and phylogenetic analysis of 18S rDNA. Thiriotia hyperdolphinae n. sp. was distinguished from existing species based on morphology, phylogenetic position, as well as host niche and geographic locality. Cephaloidophora oradareae n. sp. distinguished itself from existing Cephaloidophora, based on a difference in host (Oradarea sp.), geographic location, and to a certain extent morphology. We established this latter new species with the understanding that a more comprehensive examination of diversity at the molecular level is necessary within Cephaloidophora. Results from the 18S rDNA molecular phylogeny showed that T. hyperdolphinae n. sp. was positioned within a clade consisting of Thiriotia spp., while C. oradareae n. sp. grouped within the Cephaloidophoridae. Still, supplemental genetic information from gregarines infecting crustaceans will be needed to better understand relationships within this group of apicomplexans. 相似文献
