Editing of community data matrices is complementary to analyzing data by multivariate techniques of classification and ordination in the overall task of data analysis. A computer program, DATAEDIT, is described that can perform numerous editing functions, including data transformation, deletion of certain species or samples, deletion of rare species, deletion of outliers, separation of disjunet sample groups, reordering of the species or samples of a data matrix, and the formation of composite samples or of sample subsets. DATAEDIT can use the information in a nonhierarchical or hierarchical classification, and includes its own internal routine for reciprocal averaging ordination.We appreciate valuable suggestions from the late Robert H. Whittaker, and from Philip Dixon, David Hieks, Laura Huenneke, Linda Olsvig-whittaker, and Mark Wilson. Mark O. Hill kindly supplied a fast subroutine for reciprocal averaging.     

McArthur's fire-danger meters expressed as equations

McArthur's fire-danger meters for grasslands (Mark 3) and forests (Mark 5) have been widely used in Australia for fire-danger forecasting and as a guide to fire behaviour. We present a set of equations to describe the data provided on these meters plus equations pertinent to the recently-produced Mark 5 grassland meter. The equations provide a simple method of describing the forecasting system and are particularly useful for machine processing, and modeling.     

“A Massive Long Way”: Interconnecting Histories, a “Special Child,” ADHD, and Everyday Family Life

Focusing on one family from a study of dual-earner middle-class families carried out in Los Angeles, California, this article draws on interview and video-recorded data of everyday interactions to explore illness and healing as embedded in the microcultural context of the Morris family. For this family, an important aspect of what is at stake for them in their daily lives is best understood by focusing on 9-year-old Mark, who has been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In this article, we grapple with the complexity of conveying some sense of how Mark’s condition is experienced and relationally enacted in everyday contexts. Through illuminating connections between lives as lived and lives as told, we explore the narrative structuring of healing in relation to Mark’s local moral world with the family at its center. We examine how his parents understand the moral consequences of the child’s past for his present and future, and work to encourage others to give due weight to his troubled beginnings before this child joined the Morris family. At the same time, we see how the Morris parents act to structure Mark’s moral experience and orient to a desired future in which Mark’s “success” includes an appreciation of how he is accountable to others for his actions. Through our analyses, we also seek to contribute to discussions on what is at stake in everyday life contexts for children with ADHD and their families, through illuminating aspects of the cultural, moral and relational terrain that U.S. families navigate in contending with a child’s diagnosis of ADHD. Further, given that ADHD is often construed as a “disorder of volition,” we seek to advance anthropological theorizing about the will in situations where volitional control over behavior is seen to be disordered.

Quantitative evaluation of the performance of different electrical tomography devices.

Two widely used electrical tomography systems, the Sheffield Mark I and the DAS-01P, were quantitatively evaluated and compared to the newly developed Goe-MF system. The performance was quantified using a hardware phantom which closely matches the real input and transfer impedances of the human thorax and allows measurements equivalent to different states of lung inflation. Our results demonstrate that adequate averaging is necessary for noise reduction for the Mark I and especially for the DAS-01P system to get meaningful results even in visualizing maximal respiratory manoeuvres. The Goe-MF system showed a notably improved signal-to-noise ratio which allows also dynamic measurements at low levels of lung volume changes, e.g., in intensive care lung injury patients.     

Brief Comments on the Proposed Definition of Applied Psychophysiology

The definition proposed by Mark Schwartz is discussed in brief fashion and is found to be very useful and appropriate.     

Mark Q. Martindale: shedding new light on developmental diversity

The Saint-Petersburg Society of Naturalists awarded the 2009 "Alexander Kowalevsky Medal" to Mark Q. Martindale, Professor of Organismal Biology at the University of Hawaii and Director of the Kewalo Marine Laboratory, Honolulu. This international award inaugurated first in 1910 was re-established only in 2001. In memory of Alexander Onufrievich Kowalevsky, it is awarded to outstanding zoologists and embryologists who have made great contributions to the field of embryology and developmental biology from an evolutionary perspective. Mark Q. Martindale has worked on a wide range of animals, mostly marine species, in contrast to many evo-devo researchers who often use a single "well-established" model organism. His work demonstrates how the insights gained by studying less "popular" animal taxa not only complement, but also significantly enrich our knowledge of the evolution of metazoan body plans and of the events that have led to the current animal diversity.

Selective metabolic labelling of intracellular parasite proteins using ricin

The characterization of protein synthesis by eukaryotic intracellular parasites is inherently difficult because it may represent only a small fraction of host cell protein synthesis. Here, Mark Carrington, Yael Shochat and Anne Gurnett describe a method for overcoming this problem through the use of the toxin ricin to inhibit host cell protein synthesis specifically.

A correction to the equations describing the McArthur forest fire danger meter

The addition of a limit to the drought factor used it the equations describing the McArthur forest fire danger meter Mark 5 gives an improved estimation of forest fire behaviour.     

Comparison of a few systems for the determination of saprobic and trophic degree on the basis of plankton data

A few systems for determining the saprobic and trophic degree are compared. In determining saprobity the saprobic index according to Dresscher & Van der Mark (1976) appears to be in good agreement with the system developed by Zelinka & Marvan (1961). In defining the trophic degree there is an obvious correspondence between the systems of Hutchinson (1967) and Rawson (1956) and the chemical characterization of the water.
