The genetic diversity of 138 strains of the Xanthomonas pathovar mangiferaeindicae, which were isolated from three different hosts (mango, ambarella, and pepper tree) in 14 different countries, was assessed with restriction fragment length polymorphism markers. An analysis of patterns obtained by hybridization with an hrp cluster probe from Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae separated 11 of the strains from all of the other strains, which suggested that these 11 strains may not be Xanthomonas pv. mangiferaeindicae strains. Hybridization with an avirulence gene from X. oryzae pv. oryzae and a repetitive DNA fragment from Xanthomonas pv. mangiferaeindicae separated the remaining 127 strains into four groups that were consistent with both geographic and host origins. The group with the greatest diversity consisted of strains from Southeast Asia, where mango originated. Other groups and subgroups contained strains that were either from widely separated countries, which suggested that wide dissemination from a single site occurred, or from localized areas, which suggested that evolution of separate lineages of strains occurred. One group of strains contained only strains isolated from pepper trees in Reunion, indicating that pepper tree may not be an alternate host for Xanthomonas pv. mangiferaeindicae strains.  相似文献

The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI), the Nederlands Vaccin Instituut (NVI) and the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM) organised the international scientific workshop "Animal free Detection of Pertussis Toxin in Vaccines--Alternatives to the Histamine Sensitisation Test" at the PEI in Langen (Germany) on 09-10 June 2011. Twenty-seven experts (regulators, representatives from national control laboratories, vaccine manufacturers and academia) from 7 countries participated in this workshop. The meeting was triggered by the lack of satisfaction with the current safety testing for acellular pertussis vaccines, the "Histamine Sensitisation Test" (HIST) in mice, and the growing attention for the alternatives under development. The workshop objectives were: a) to review the current status of available alternative methods, b) to discuss the sensitivity that an alternative test needs, c) to plan experiments that allow for comparison of the alternative tests. The results of the workshop are summarised in this meeting report.  相似文献

Xanthomonas is a large genus of Gram-negative bacteria that cause disease in hundreds of plant hosts, including many economically important crops. Pathogenic species and pathovars within species show a high degree of host plant specificity and many exhibit tissue specificity, invading either the vascular system or the mesophyll tissue of the host. In this Review, we discuss the insights that functional and comparative genomic studies are providing into the adaptation of this group of bacteria to exploit the extraordinary diversity of plant hosts and different host tissues.  相似文献

Between July 18(th) and 24(th) 2010, 26 leading microbial ecology, computation, bioinformatics and statistics researchers came together in Snowbird, Utah (USA) to discuss the challenge of how to best characterize the microbial world using next-generation sequencing technologies. The meeting was entitled "Terabase Metagenomics" and was sponsored by the Institute for Computing in Science (ICiS) summer 2010 workshop program. The aim of the workshop was to explore the fundamental questions relating to microbial ecology that could be addressed using advances in sequencing potential. Technological advances in next-generation sequencing platforms such as the Illumina HiSeq 2000 can generate in excess of 250 billion base pairs of genetic information in 8 days. Thus, the generation of a trillion base pairs of genetic information is becoming a routine matter. The main outcome from this meeting was the birth of a concept and practical approach to exploring microbial life on earth, the Earth Microbiome Project (EMP). Here we briefly describe the highlights of this meeting and provide an overview of the EMP concept and how it can be applied to exploration of the microbiome of each ecosystem on this planet.  相似文献

A second National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop on Conceptual Assessment in Biology was held in January 2008. Reports prepared for the workshop revealed that research groups working in a variety of biological sciences are continuing to develop conceptual assessment instruments for use in the classroom. Discussions at this meeting largely focused on two issues: 1) the utility of the backwards design approach of Wiggins and McTighe (11), in which identification of learning outcomes (determining what to assess) lies at the beginning of course design; and 2) the utility of defining expected learning outcomes as the building of runable mental models (and designing conceptual assessments that would test the correctness of these mental models). A third meeting is being planned that will focus on the processes involved in writing and validating conceptual assessment instruments.  相似文献

In April 2004, the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) co‐organized a meeting for US and German junior geoscientists in Washington DC. As an outcome of this Research Conference titled ‘Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Life’, a follow‐up workshop took place in May 2005 at the Eberhard‐Karls University of Tuebingen in Germany. This workshop covered new aspects of research to improve the understanding of steep biogeochemical gradients covering pH changes, redox zones, as well as solute and particulate concentration variations in aqueous systems. Detailed understanding of biogeochemistry in this context delivers new fundamental aspects in interdisciplinary research. Such work is also urgently needed to control ever‐increasing scarcity of water that is to large parts driven by decreasing water quality. Research ideas on gradients in a biogeochemical context that were discussed by a subgroup of biogeochemists during that workshop are summarized and presented here.  相似文献

The majority of the contributions in this issue of the Journal of Molecular Graphics are papers that were presented at the Seventh Darmstadt Molecular Modeling Workshop, which took place at the Technical University Darmstadt on May 18–19, 1993. The technical organization of this workshop was again in the hands of the physical chemistry staff of the Technical University, Darmstadt, as it has been for the past six years. The scientific program was coordinated by Stefan Kast from the author's research group. The Darmstadt Workshop has been quite an informal and inexpensive event throughout the years. From 1994 onward, it will also be a specific meeting of the recently founded German-speaking branch of the Molecular Graphics Society. The following notes should help to provide an overview of the past activities and present some ideas for the future of this meeting.  相似文献

The fifth Clonal Plant Workshop entitled 'Clonal plants and environmental heterogeneity – space, time and scale' was held at the University of Wales, Bangor, from the 9th to the 14th September 1997. The workshops began in 1988, when a small group of plant scientists with different backgrounds met in the Netherlands to discuss plant clonality. This meeting was followed by workshops in 1990, 1992 and 1995 in Sweden, the Czech Republic and Hungary, respectively. The purpose of the Bangor meeting was to continue to integrate knowledge from a wide range of biological disciplines to attempt a better understanding of clonal plants in the context of the heterogeneous environments in which they occur. This special issue is a collection of a number of the presentations at the Bangor workshop. The effects of spatial and temporal environmental heterogeneity on individuals, populations and communities are, of course, diverse, and this collection of papers is not intended to provide a synthesis of the ecological consequences of environmental heterogeneity. Rather, this special issue more accurately reflects progress in various areas of clonal plant research including population dynamics of ramets and genets, mathematical modelling and molecular techniques. We wish to thank all participants of the workshop for their contribution and trust that they found the meeting as stimulating and enjoyable as we did. We are indebted to the authors and the many referees for their friendly cooperation and to Plant Ecology for publishing the proceedings. We also gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the following that made the workshop possible: The British Ecological Society, The Tansley Fund of the New Phytologist Trust, The Countryside Council for Wales, The Institute of Terrestrial Ecology (Bangor) and Skye Instruments Ltd, Wales.  相似文献

The purpose of this workshop was to bring together scientists from the EU and US to discuss our current understanding of how protein machines assemble and sort through genomic DNA to identify specific damaged sites which are repaired through the two critical repair pathways: nucleotide excision repair or interstrand crosslink repair. Several of the enzymes perform dual functions in both pathways, thus combining these two topics in one meeting provided tremendous synergy and was a unique feature of this workshop. Many endogenous agents, environmental toxicants and chemotherapeutic agents cause a spectrum of DNA lesions that are repaired through these two mechanisms. The importance of the repair pathways acting on these forms of DNA damage is underscored by the fact that their loss or dysregulation is associated with a variety of devastating heritable human conditions including cancer, neurodegeneration, premature aging and severe developmental abnormalities. The workshop covered research conducted on molecules to mankind, and included discussions of disease syndromes associated with poor repair of these forms of damage. The meeting also provided an unparalleled opportunity to interact with scientists from the EU, US, and throughout the world, who are driving the field.  相似文献

The establishment of a network of European human research tissue banks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This is a report of a workshop held on the establishment of human research tissue banking which was held in Levi, Finland 21–24 March 2002.There were 21 participants from 7 European countries. This meeting was attended by representatives from academia, research tissue banks and from the Biotech and Pharmaceutical Industries. The principal aim of the workshop was to find a way to progress the recommendations from ECVAM workshop 44 (ATLA 29, 125–134,2001) and ECVAM workshop 32 (ATLA 26, 763–777, 1998). The workshop represented the first unofficial meeting of the European Network of Research Tissue Banks (ENRTB) steering group. It is expected that in the period preceding the next workshop the ENRTB steering group will co-ordinate the ethical, legislative and organisational aspects of research tissue banking. Key issues dealt with by the Levi workshop included the practical aspects of sharing expertise and experiences across the different European members. Such collaboration between research tissue banks and end users of such material seeks to ultimately enable shared access to human tissue for medical and pharmaco-toxicological research while maintaining strict adherence to differences in legal and ethical aspects related to the use of human tissue in individual countries. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The EMBO workshop 'Functional Organization of the Cell Nucleus' held in Prague at the Hotel of the Postgraduate School of Medicine was attended by 110 participants (49 invited speakers and 61 selected participants) from 22 countries. Such a full range of topics devoted to the cell biology of the nucleus has not been discussed previously in such an intimate meeting in Europe. The workshop not only offered an opportunity for junior scientists to benefit from having an international meeting within Europe and a chance to discuss their work with internationally recognized experts, but it also offered a unique opportunity for interactions among the more established investigators. The fruits of a number of presentations are gathered together in a Special Issue of the Journal of Structural Biology which appeared in spring 2000. Last but not least, it is worth mentioning that while stepping through a packed scientific program, the participants did find the time to observe the solar eclipse just before the lunch break of August 11.  相似文献

Pathogenicity of Xanthomonas campestris pathovar (pv.) vesicatoria and most other Gram-negative bacterial plant pathogens largely depends on a type III secretion (TTS) system which is encoded by hypersensitive response and pathogenicity (hrp) genes. These genes are induced in the plant and are essential for the bacterium to be virulent in susceptible hosts and for the induction of the hypersensitive response (HR) in resistant host and non-host plants. The TTS machinery secretes proteins into the extracellular milieu and effector proteins into the plant cell cytosol. In the plant, the effectors presumably interfere with cellular processes to the benefit of the pathogen or have an avirulence activity that betrays the bacterium to the plant surveillance system. Type III effectors were identified by their avirulence activity, co-regulation with the TTS system and homology to known effectors. A number of effector proteins are members of families, e.g., the AvrBs3 family in Xanthomonas. AvrBs3 localizes to the nucleus of the plant cell where it modulates plant gene expression. Another family that is also present in Xanthomonas is the YopJ/AvrRxv family. The latter proteins appear to act as SUMO cysteine proteases in the host. Here, we will present an overview about the regulation of the TTS system and its substrates and discuss the function of the AvrRxv and AvrBs3 family members in more detail.  相似文献

We hope to raise awareness of mental health and well-being among primatologists. With this aim in mind, we organized a workshop on mental health as part of the main program of the Winter meeting of the Primate Society of Great Britain in December 2021. The workshop was very well received. Here, we review the main issues raised in the workshop, and supplement them with our own observations, reflections, and reading. The information we gathered during the workshop reveals clear hazards to mental health and suggests that we must collectively acknowledge and better manage both the hazards themselves and our ability to cope with them if we are to avert disaster. We call on institutions and learned societies to lead in seeking solutions for the benefit of primatologists and primatology.  相似文献

The third X-inactivation meeting 'Fifty years of X-inactivation research', which celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of Mary Lyon's formulation of the X-inactivation hypothesis, was an EMBO workshop held in Oxford, UK, in July 2011. This conference brought together the usual suspects from the field, as well as younger researchers, to discuss recent advances in X-inactivation research. Here, we review the results presented at the meeting and highlight some of the exciting progress that has been made. We also discuss the future challenges for the field, which aim to further our understanding of the developmental regulation of X inactivation, the randomness (or skewing) of X inactivation, and the diverse strategies used by mammalian species to mediate X inactivation.  相似文献

Xanthomonas campestris pv. translucens is the causal agent of bacterial leaf streak of cereal grains and grasses, and individual strains within the pathovar differ in their host range among the cereals. Coinoculation of a wide-host-range and a narrow-host-range strain resulted in the wide-host-range reaction. Transposon and chemical mutagenesis of the wide-host-range strain Xct4, pathogenic on barley, wheat, rye, and triticale, resulted in variants with reduced host range. When pathogenicity was inactivated independently for barley, wheat, triticale, and rye, wild-type symptoms were retained on the other members in the host range. Testing of some host range mutants on additional varieties of the cereals indicated some cultivar specificity. In addition, mutants nonpathogenic on combinations of the hosts or on all hosts were isolated. This suggests that there are independent positive factors determining host range in this species, rather than an avirulence gene system such as those determining race specificity in other plant pathogens.  相似文献

Xanthomonas is a large genus of bacteria that collectively cause disease on more than 300 plant species. The broad host range of the genus contrasts with stringent host and tissue specificity for individual species and pathovars. Whole-genome sequences of Xanthomonas campestris pv. raphani strain 756C and X. oryzae pv. oryzicola strain BLS256, pathogens that infect the mesophyll tissue of the leading models for plant biology, Arabidopsis thaliana and rice, respectively, were determined and provided insight into the genetic determinants of host and tissue specificity. Comparisons were made with genomes of closely related strains that infect the vascular tissue of the same hosts and across a larger collection of complete Xanthomonas genomes. The results suggest a model in which complex sets of adaptations at the level of gene content account for host specificity and subtler adaptations at the level of amino acid or noncoding regulatory nucleotide sequence determine tissue specificity.  相似文献

The Mucosal Immunology Special Interest Group (SIG-MI) of the Australasian Society of Immunology was formed 14 years ago and has run regular symposia and workshops in conjunction with the Australasian Society of Immunology since that time. In December 2007 the Mucosal Immunology Special Interest Group held a 1-day satellite workshop in conjunction with the annual Australasian Society of Immunology scientific meeting in Sydney to celebrate the decade since hosting the 9th International Congress of Mucosal Immunology (9-ICMI) in 1997, which was also held in Sydney. The meeting that was attended by 65 delegates focussed on 4 session themes: reproductive immunology, respiratory immunology, mucosal immunology of the gastrointestinal tract and mucosal vaccines.  相似文献
