Environmental reservoirs of zooxanthellae are essential for coral larvae settlement; understanding where they occur and how they are maintained is important for coral reef ecology. This study investigated the dispersal of Symbiodinium spp. by the stoplight parrotfish Sparisoma viride, which had high mean densities of viable and cultivable Symbiodinium (3207-8900 cells ml(-1)) in faeces. Clades A, B and G were detected using amplified chloroplast ribosomal sequences (cp23S-HVR), and corresponded with diet preferences of fish and the environmental Symbiodinium diversity of the region. Cells are constantly dispersed in the water column and deposited in the substrate at a local level (86 ± 17.8 m(2)), demonstrating that parrotfishes are vectors for short-distance dispersal of zooxanthellae. Such dispersal could constitute a key role in the maintenance of environmental Symbiodinium reservoirs.  相似文献

Synopsis We compare the vertical distribution, substrate preferences, grazing behaviour and social interactions of the stoplight parrotfish,Sparisoma viride, with that of other scarids at a fringing reef off Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles). Earlier reports thatS. viride only displays territorial behaviour against conspecifics are confirmed by the non-aggressive nature of this parrotfish and the low time expenditure on interactions with other herbivores. The vertical distribution ofS. viride is largely identical to that of several other scarids, acanthurids and pomacentrids, whose ranges may completely coincide withS. viride territories. Comparison of the substrate use of the five most common scarids inside a singleS. viride territory yields no evidence of food partitioning. We suggest that the lack of interspecific territorial behaviour inS. viride is explained by the inability to economically defend a territory against all potential food competitors. Factors that may favour territory sharing between herbivores are fine-scale resource partitioning and shared defence, both of which would reduce the costs of territorial life. However, more detailed investigation of herbivore food selection is required before definite conclusions can be drawn.  相似文献

Recruitment plays an important role in the population dynamics of marine organisms and is often quantified as a surrogate for settlement. When quantified, recruitment includes settlement plus a period of time in the benthic habitat. Therefore, it is essential to determine whether post-settlement processes alter patterns established at settlement. I conducted a series of experiments on 2.0 m2 patch reefs to examine the importance of pre- and post-settlement processes to the distribution and abundance of recruits of the stoplight parrotfish, Sparisoma viride, on the Tague Bay reef, St. Croix, USVI. Recruitment was higher to the coral Porites porites than to another common coral Montastrea annularis, but there was no evidence of microhabitat choice at settlement. This result, in conjunction with the examination of the size classes of recruits present on P. porites and M. annularis patch reefs in a separate experiment suggested that differences in recruitment were established after settlement. Stoplights settled in higher numbers to patch reefs that contained conspecific residents, and persistence was higher at higher recruit density. Although resident damselfish directed significant amounts of agonistic behavior towards newly stoplight recruits, damselfish presence had no effect on settlement. However, damselfish presence did reduce stoplight recruitment. These results demonstrate that both pre- and post-settlement processes influence the recruitment of stoplight parrotfish. More importantly, these results indicate that benthic processes can alter recruitment patterns from initial settlement patterns, and indicate that workers should be careful in using recruitment as a proxy for settlement.  相似文献

Parrotfishes (Labridae, Scarinae) comprise a large marine fish group of difficult identification, particularly during juvenile phase when the typical morphology and coloration of adults are absent. Therefore, the goal of this study was to test cytogenetic markers and DNA barcoding in the identification of bucktooth parrtotfish Sparisoma radians from the northeastern coast of Brazil. Sequencing of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) confirmed all studied samples as S. radians, and all showed high similarity (99–100%) with Caribbean populations. The karyotype of this species was divergent from most marine Perciformes, being composed of 2n = 46 chromosomes. These consisted of a large number of metacentric and submetacentric pairs with small amounts of heterochromatin and GC-rich single nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) not syntenic to 5S rDNA clusters. These are the first data about DNA barcoding in parrotfish from the Brazilian province and the first refined chromosomal analysis in Scarinae, providing useful data to a reliable genetic identification of S. radians.  相似文献

Quantitative data on the ways in which the different phases of the stoplight parrotfish (Sparisomaviride Bonnaterre) distribute their time among various activities in different habitats are presented. Individuals spent from 84–97% of their diurnal time swimming, feeding, and hovering. Additionally, large adults spent a significant amount of time sheltering among crevices. Phase-related differences in these activities are statistically significant, as are differences in duration and rates of change of the activities. Large individuals spent more time swimming, while small individuals spent more time hovering. In addition, large individuals performed longer bouts of activity and switched activities less frequently than small individuals. Adult males and females spent approximately equal proportions of time in each of the activity states. Stochastic analyses of behavioural sequences show second order Markov chain dependencies, suggesting that preceding activity states affect subsequent behaviour. Possible relationships between behavioural sequencing and the species foraging strategy are discussed, and it is suggested that the sequence of behavioural activities can provide an estimation of the distribution of food resources in the environment.  相似文献

Previous laboratory studies have shown that photoperiodic adult songbirds experience seasonal variations in singing frequency that correlate with plasma androgen levels, as well as changes in the brain regions that control singing (vocal control regions). The present study investigates naturally occurring seasonal changes in the sizes of these regions in a wild migratory species (dark-eyed junco, Junco hyemalis), with samples from adolescence to post-breeding fall migration. In adult males, the volumes of the vocal control regions area X and the higher vocal center (HVC) were large during the breeding season when birds were singing and androgen levels were high, and decreased in size after the breeding season when singing had stopped and androgen levels were low. HVC volume in adolescent males caught in the fall (no singing), when plasma androgen levels were low, was smaller than in breeding adults, thereby following the seasonal pattern of change in plasma androgen levels. In adolescent males, however, area X volume was the same as in breeding adults. Thus, area X size in adolescent male juncos may be testosterone independent. The seasonal pattern of robust nucleus of the archistriatum volume was similar to that of the HVC. The volumes of neither the magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum nor the nucleus rotundus, a control region, differed seasonally. Castration of breeding adult males caused both area X and HVC volumes to decrease compared to castrated controls with testosterone replacement, indicating that maintenance of these two region volumes is testosterone dependent in adults. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Social networks describe the pattern of intraspecific interactions within a population. An individual's position in a social network often is expected to influence its fitness, but only a few studies have examined this relationship in natural populations. We investigated the fitness consequences of network position in a wild beetle population. Copulation success of male beetles positively covaried with strength (a measure of network centrality) and negatively covaried with clustering coefficient (CC) (a measure of cliquishness). Further analysis using mediation path models suggested that the activity level of individuals drove the relationships between strength and fitness almost entirely. In contrast, selection on CC was not explained by individual behaviours. Although our data suggest that social network position can experience strong sexual selection, it is also clear that the relationships between fitness and some network metrics merely reflect variation in individual-level behaviours.  相似文献

A variety of field studies suggest that sex change in animalsmay be more complicated than originally depicted by the size-advantagehypothesis. A modification of the size-advantage hypothesis,the expected reproductive success threshold model, proposesthat sperm competition and size-fecundity skew can stronglyaffect reproductive pay-offs. Size-fecundity skew occurs ifa large female's fecundity is markedly higher than the aggregateof the other members of her social group and, together withpaternity dilution from sperm competition, can produce situationsin which large females benefit by deferring sex change to smallerfemales. Deferral by large females can create sex-size distributionscharacterized by the presence of large females and small sex-changedmales, and it is precisely these distributions that the traditionalsize-advantage model cannot explain. We tested the predictionsof the new model with the bucktooth parrotfish, Sparisoma radians,on coral reefs in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Collectionsand spawning observations determined that the local environmentalregime of S. radians is characterized by pervasive sperm competition(accompanying 30% of spawns) and factors that can produce substantialsize-fecundity skew in social groups. Dominant male removalexperiments demonstrate that the largest females in social groupsoften do not change sex when provided an opportunity. Instead,smaller, lower-ranking females change sex when a harem vacancyarises. This pattern of sex change is in contrast to virtuallyall previous studies of social control of sex change in fishes,but provides strong support for the general predictions of theexpected reproductive success threshold model.  相似文献

Recent assertions that the Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus) is a multiple-or serial-mounting species are incorrect. Data are presented from over 300 copulations observed among wild Moroccan Barbary macaques which establish empirically that males of this macaque species are single mounters. The average length of an ejaculatory copulation was 8.7 sec, with a range of 6 to 14 sec. Ejaculation occurred an average of 6.3 sec after mounting, with an average of nine pelvic thrusts per ejaculation. Males appeared capable of ejaculating twice within 16 min, and three consecutive times within 37 min. Characteristically, only one mount and ejaculation occurred during a sexual association between an estrous female and each of her consorting males. Schemes of macaque evolution which incorrectly classify Barbary macaques as a multiple-mounting species should be viewed cautiously.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated mating frequencies of female scorpionflies Panorpa germanica in the field using two different experimental approaches. First, the mating status of wild‐caught females was estimated on the basis of sperm numbers present inside their sperm storage organs. Secondly, the number of mating partners wild‐caught females must have had was inferred from mother‐offspring analyses of a polymorphic microsatellite locus. Our results suggest a very low mating frequency of wild female P. germanica. Consequently, the risk of sperm competition is rather low in this species. The relevance of female mate choice in relation to the low mating frequency is discussed.  相似文献

The difficulty of obtaining pedigrees for wild populations has hampered the possibility of demonstrating inbreeding depression in nature. In a small, naturally restored, wild population of grey wolves in Scandinavia, founded in 1983, we constructed a pedigree for 24 of the 28 breeding pairs established in the period 1983-2002. Ancestry for the breeding animals was determined through a combination of field data (snow tracking and radio telemetry) and DNA microsatellite analysis. The population was founded by only three individuals. The inbreeding coefficient F varied between 0.00 and 0.41 for wolves born during the study period. The number of surviving pups per litter during their first winter after birth was strongly correlated with inbreeding coefficients of pups (R2=0.39, p<0.001). This inbreeding depression was recalculated to match standard estimates of lethal equivalents (2B), corresponding to 6.04 (2.58-9.48, 95% CI) litter-size-reducing equivalents in this wolf population.  相似文献

Parasite avoidance is increasingly considered to be a potential driving factor in animal migrations. In many marine and freshwater benthic fish, migration into a pelagic environment by developing larvae is a common life history trait that could reduce exposure to parasites during a critical window of developmental susceptibility. We tested this hypothesis on congeneric fish (family Galaxiidae, genus Galaxias) belonging to a closely related species complex sampled from coastal streams in southeastern New Zealand. Migratory Galaxias have larvae that migrate to pelagic marine environments, whereas the larvae of non-migratory species rear close to adult habitats with no pelagic larval phase. Both migratory and non-migratory fish are hosts to two species of skin-penetrating trematodes that cause spinal malformations and high mortality in young fish. Using generalized linear models within an Akaike information criterion and model averaging framework, we compared infection levels between migratory and non-migratory fish while taking into account body size and several other local factors likely to influence infection levels. For one trematode species, we found a significant effect of migration: for any given body length, migratory fish harboured fewer parasites than non-migratory fish. Also, no parasites of any kind were found in juvenile migratory fish sampled in spring shortly after their return to stream habitats. Our results demonstrate that migration spares juvenile fish from the debilitating parasites to which they would be exposed in adult stream habitats. Therefore, either the historical adoption of a migratory strategy in some Galaxias was an adaptation against parasitism, or it evolved for other reasons and now provides protection from infection as a coincidental side-effect.  相似文献

This study examines factors affecting androgen and cortisol levels in wild, male golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia). Golden lion tamarins are a cooperatively breeding species in which groups often contain two potentially breeding males. Brothers frequently emigrate together and develop a clear dominance hierarchy, but interactions between them are primarily affiliative. Duos in which the males are not related are less stable. In addition, reproductive skew theory predicts that dominant males will be less likely to share reproduction with related subordinates. As such, we predicted that both androgens and cortisol would be higher in subordinate males unrelated to the dominant male. We also predicted that androgens in breeding males would be higher during the mating season than the birth/infant care season, as per Wingfield's "challenge hypothesis" (1990). Fecal samples were collected from 24 males in 14 social groups and assayed by enzyme immunoassay. Androgen levels were higher in breeding males during the mating season, thus supporting the challenge hypothesis. However, while subordinate males unrelated to the dominant male had significantly lower androgens than any other group, cortisol levels were not correspondingly higher. These results suggest that unrelated subordinate males show measurable reproductive suppression and may use strategies such as infantilization to avert aggression from dominant males.  相似文献

The social behavior of the common marmoset has been well studied in captivity, but little is known about the social dynamics of this species in its natural habitat. Social relationships were studied in three polygynous groups of common marmosets,Callithrix jacchus, in northeastern Brazil. Breeding adults appeared to be the center of social life and were the most frequent grooming partners or nearest neighbors for most adult group members. The observations of unidirectional agonistic interactions suggest that breeding adults were also dominant over all other group members, but that neither sex was dominant over the other. The dynamics of within-group social relationships are likely to be important determinants in the reproductive strategies employed by marmoset females.  相似文献

Life history data are presented for a population of vervets, Cercopithecusaethiops sabaeus, in Barbados, West Indies. The data were obtained from two habituated troops and from vervets captured during a large-scale trapping program. Individuals of known age from one troop were weighed periodically, and separate growth curves generated for males and females. The mean weight of captured adult females was 3.3 kg; that of adult males, 5.3 kg. The average age at sexual maturity is estimated at 34 months for females and 60 months for males. Vervets give birth throughout the year, but most infants are born between April and July. The average interbirth interval following a surviving infant is 11.8 months. The mortality of juveniles is heaviest between birth and 2 years of age and decreases thereafter. Males emigrate from their natal troops at sexual maturity and one incident of a juvenile female emigrating is reported.  相似文献

Repeatability of parental care, let alone heritability of care, has been rarely measured, although there has been much research linking sexual selection to male parental care and also examining biparental care in relation to game theory models. We investigated within- and between-year repeatabilities of incubation and nestling provisioning and how these two types of parental care were related in a sexually dimorphic species, the house sparrow, Passer domesticus. We found that between- and within-year repeatabilities of feeding rate were high in males and low to moderate in females, but that between- and within-year repeatabilities of incubation time were low to moderate in both sexes. Interestingly, the amount of time during which neither sex incubated significantly predicted the subsequent male feeding rate but not the female feeding rate. Our results suggest a need for a new theoretical framework that encompasses variation in the predictability and plasticity of parental investment by individuals.  相似文献

Play behaviour was observed in wild caught Mus musculus housed in a semi-natural environment. The behaviour of interest (1) is very exaggerated and jerky in appearance. (2) occurs almost exclusively in highly enriched areas of the observation room, (3) disappears under stressful conditions and (4) occurs primarily in juveniles. Solitary and social play were observed. Aggressive and pouncing play were the two major types of social play seen. Juveniles were found to play with littermates significantly more often than with non-littermates but did not show a significant preference with respect to the sex of their play partners.  相似文献
