Aim:  To gain a better understanding of the survival and persistence of Enterobacter sakazakii in severe environments.
Methods and Results:  We evaluated the resistance of Ent. sakazakii to various environmental stresses, including heating, drying, water activity ( a w), and pH. The resistance of Ent. sakazakii to heat varies widely among strains. Most tested strains of Ent. sakazakii exhibited unusual resistance to dry stress, which depends on drying media. Growth of most strains occurred within 24 h at 37°C when the initial a w of the medium was adjusted to 0·94 with sucrose or sodium chloride. The minimum pH for growth within 24 h at 37°C was 3·9 or 4·1 for most strains tested. Additionally, there did not appear to be any relationship between resistance to stresses and biofilm-forming ability in Ent. sakazakii planktonic cells.
Conclusions:  These results indicate that Ent. sakazakii is much more resistant than other Enterobacteriaceae to environmental stresses. Moreover, it is likely that Ent. sakazakii has cross-resistance to dry and thermal stresses.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  The findings of this study will contribute to an improved understanding of the survival and behaviour of Ent. sakazakii , which will lead to improved strategies for preventing outbreaks of Ent. sakazakii infection.  相似文献

Enterobacter sakazakii is considered an opportunistic food-borne pathogen, causing rare but significant illness especially in neonates. It has been proposed that the organism is relatively resistant to osmotic and dry stress compared to other species of the Enterobacteriaceae group. To understand the mechanisms involved in osmotic stress response, 2-DE protein analysis coupled to MALDI-TOF MS was employed to investigate changes in the protein profiles of E. sakazakii cells in response to two different types of osmotic stress (physical desiccation and growth in hyperosmotic media). In total, 80 differentially expressed protein spots corresponding to 53 different protein species were identified. Affiliation of proteins to functional categories revealed that a considerable number of the differentially expressed proteins from desiccated and hyperosmotic grown samples belonged to the same functional category but were regulated in opposite directions. Our data show that the protein pattern of NaCl-grown cultures reflect more or less a general down-regulation of central metabolic pathways, whereas adaptation of (non-growing) cells in a desiccated state represents an accumulation of proteins that serve some structural or protective role. The most striking effects observed for both types of osmotic stress in E. sakazakii were a significant down-regulation of the motility apparatus and the formation of filamentous cells.  相似文献

ERIC (Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus)-PCR was employed to generate stable and reproductive ERIC-PCR fingerprints of Ent. sakazakii ATCC51329. Moreover, this study also cloned and sequenced a major band of Ent. sakazakii (ATCC51329) ERIC-PCR fingerprints. The major band was amplified with primer ERIC2 and sequences extending primer ERIC 2 showed poor similarity with ERIC elements. A comparison of the nucleotide acid with other sequences available in the GenBank revealed 90% of identity with Ent. sakazakii ATCC BAA-894, and 73%-74% of identity with oligopeptiase gene or protease gene of some species from the Enterobacteriaceae family. Two primers were synthesized to develop and optimize an Enterobacter sakazakii-specific PCR based on regions of major band unique to Ent. sakazakii. The expected fragment was amplified from all of Ent. sakazkaii but not from the negative controls. As few as 10(2) CFU/ml of Ent. sakazakii of PCR were directly detected in the infant formulas. This was the case even in the presence of other bacteria. A comparison of traditional methods and new developed PCR in commercial foods suggested that without using API20-E test, the DFI chromogenic medium and FDA method showed 46.15% and 50% false positive respectively. Moreover, one false negative was observed with FDA method. In contrast, PCR was highly sensitive and specific to Ent. sakazakii. A high heterogeneity between Ent. sakazakii and the other microorganisms was found on expected fragment sequence. In addition, Ent. sakazakii ATCC51329 formed a separate branch with >5% divergence from the type strain ATCC BAA-894 and major strains.  相似文献

Aims:  Enterobacter sakazakii is an emerging food-borne pathogen that can cause rare but severe forms of neonatal meningitis, bacteraemia and necrotizing enterocolitis. A rapid typing method at the strain level is needed to determine the monoclonality or polyclonality of the isolates during outbreaks.
Methods and Results:  The BOX-PCR fingerprinting technique, which targets the repetitive BOX sequences, and sequencing of the flagellin gene, fliC , were evaluated against a panel of 27 Ent. sakazakii strains from clinical and environmental sources. The typeability and discriminatory power of the techniques were compared with those of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), the reference genotyping method. BOX-PCR results yielded 92% agreement with PFGE results, whereas fliC gene sequencing was poorly discriminative.
Conclusions:  In our study, BOX-PCR and PFGE were similarly discriminatory to type Ent. sakazakii strains. The weak variability of the Ent. sakazakii fliC gene was related to the absence of the variable central domain present in most fliC genes of Enterobacteriaceae.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  The BOX-PCR typing provides an accurate discrimination and a rapid answer to identify clonal isolates of Ent. sakazakii .  相似文献

Enterobacter sakazakii , designated a unique species in 1980, has been implicated in a rare but severe form of neonatal meningitis, with dried-infant formula being implicated as the mode of transmission. The high mortality rate (40–80%) and the lack of information about this organism led to a study of the heat resistance of Ent. sakazakii in reconstituted dried-infant formula. Ten Canadian Ent. sakazakii strains (5 clinical and 5 food isolates) were used to determine the heat resistance of this organism at 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60°C in reconstituted dried-infant formula. D - values of 54·8, 23·7, 10·3, 4·2 and 2·5 min were obtained for each temperature, respectively. The overall calculated z -value was 5·82°C. In a comparison of the D -values of several members of the Enterobacteriaceae in dairy products, Ent. sakazakii appeared to be one of the most thermotolerant organisms. The importance of process control during manufacture and the use of aseptic procedures during the preparation, use and storage of dried-infant formula is discussed.  相似文献

AIMS: To better understand antibiotic resistance of Enterobacter cloacae isolates originated from food animals, the phenotypic and genotypic resistance of Ent. cloacae isolates from retail ground beef, cattle farm, processing facilities and clinical settings were investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS: The ampC, ampD and ampR genes in the isolates were sequenced and analysed. beta-Lactamase activities and beta-lactamase profiles of the isolates were analysed by the enzymatic hydrolysis of nitrocefin and isoelectric focussing, respectively. The ampC gene of the Ent. cloacae isolate was cloned and transformed into Escherichia coli strains. The genomic DNA profiles of Ent. cloacae isolates were analysed by using pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Mutation at one residue (Val-54-->Ile) in the AmpR amino acid sequence was consistently found in Ent. cloacae isolates that were resistant to a broadspectrum of beta-lactam agents. The enzyme activity in the isolates was induced by cefoxitin. The pI (isoelectric point) of the enzymes produced by the test strains ranged from 8.4 to 8.9. Cloning of ampC gene of the Ent. cloacae isolate conferred the resistance to ampicillin, cephalothin and amoxicillin in recipient E. coli strains. One recipient of E. coli O157:H7 strain additionally acquired resistance to ceftiofur. The genomic analysis of Ent. cloacae isolates by PFGE showed that the isolates from various sources were genetically unrelated. CONCLUSIONS: The spread of diverse clones of AmpC-producing Ent. cloacae occurred in the ecosystem and retail products. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Our findings suggested that AmpC-producing Ent. cloacae could be a contributor in spreading beta-lactamase genes in farm environments and food processing environments.  相似文献

AIMS: The viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state is a survival strategy adopted by bacteria when exposed to environmental stress. When in this state bacteria are no longer culturable on conventional growth media, but cells display metabolic activity and maintain pathogenicity factors/genes and, in some cases, resuscitation from the VBNC state has been shown. This state has been described for both human pathogens and faecal pollution indicators. In this study, we present evidence for entry of different enterococcal species into the VBNC state in an oligotrophic microcosm. METHODS AND RESULTS: The duration of the viability of the cells in the VBNC state was measured either by detecting the presence of pbp5 mRNA or by quantifying their resuscitation capability. Enterococci showed different behaviours. Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus hirae entered into the VBNC state within 2 weeks and remained in that state for 3 months. In the experiments described the resuscitation rate was 1:10 000 cells as soon as the cells entered the VBNC state and decreased gradually to undetectable levels over the following 3 months. Enterococcus faecium, however, remained culturable up to 4 weeks. After this time period, when the population was totally unculturable, the cells were far less resuscitable than other enterococci and only over a narrow time interval (2 weeks). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that Ent. faecalis and Ent. hirae enter the VBNC state but that Ent. faecium, in an oligotrophic laboratory environment, tends to die instead of entering the VBNC state. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These experiments may mimic what happens when enterococci are released by humans and animals in natural environments.  相似文献

AIMS: To study the growth, thermotolerance and biofilm formation of the emergent pathogen Enterobacter sakazakii in infant formula milk (IFM). METHODS AND RESULTS: The temperature range, death kinetics and biofilm formation of E. sakazakii were determined using impedance microbiology and conventional methods. In IFM the organism grew as low as 6 degrees C and optimally at 37-43 degrees C. In faecal coliform tests, 23% of strains (n = 70) produced gas from lauryl sulphate broth (LSB) at 44 degrees C after 48 h incubation. Three strains failed to grow in LSB at any of the temperatures. The D-value of cells suspended in IFM was determined between 54 and 62 degrees C. The resultant z-value was 5.7 degrees C. The organism was able to adhere and grow on latex, polycarbonate, silicon and to a lesser extent stainless steel. CONCLUSIONS: Enterobacter sakazakii was able to grow at refrigeration temperatures and on infant-feeding equipment. The thermotolerance of the organism was similar to other Enterobacteriaceae and should be killed during standard pasteurization treatment. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Enterobacter sakazakii has been associated with infant meningitis through consumption of contaminated IFM. Enterobacter sakazakii is able to grow in IFM during storage at refrigeration temperatures and attach to infant-feeding equipment, which may become reservoirs of infection.  相似文献

Aims:  To examine the presence of Enterobacter sakazakii in milk and milk-related products produced/distributed under Egyptian conditions and to probe possible transmission routes of the pathogen during the preparation of dairy products.
Methods and Results:  One hundred and thirty-seven samples of milk and milk-related products were randomly collected from Egyptian markets and examined for the presence of Ent. sakazakii . The pathogen could be detected only in skimmed milk powder (SMP) and its related product, imitation recombined soft (IRS) cheese. Enterobacter sakazakii isolates recovered from these products were phenotypically similar and sensitive to all antibiotics examined in this study. They also showed indistinguishable banding patterns when subjected to macro-restriction profiling using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (mrp-PFGE). One Ent. sakazakii isolate was inoculated into SMP that was used in the preparation of IRS cheese using two cheese making procedures. The pathogen could survive for up to 1 month in the IRS cheese prepared by either procedure.
Conclusions:  The simultaneous presence of Ent. sakazakii in SMP and IRS cheese samples collected within the same local market besides the phenotypic and genotypic similarities of isolates recovered from these samples suggested the possibility of Ent. sakazakii being transmitted from SMP into IRS cheese. This hypothesis was supported by the observation that the pathogen could survive in the IRS cheese prepared from contaminated SMP.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  The study highlights SMP and IRS cheese as potential transmission vehicles of Ent. sakazakii . It also raises concern on the microbiological safety of IRS cheese prepared from SMP.  相似文献

Aim:  To evaluate the effect of starvation, heat, cold, acid, alkaline, chlorine and ethanol stresses on the resistance of Enterobacter sakazakii in powdered infant milk formula (PIMF) towards gamma radiation.
Methods and Results:  Stressed cells of E. sakazakii ATCC 51329 and four other food isolate strains were mixed individually with PIMF, kept overnight at room temperature, and then exposed to gamma radiation up to 7·5 kGy. The D 10-values were determined using linear regression and for the stressed E. sakazakii strains these values ranged from 0·82 to 1·95 kGy.
Conclusions:  Environmental stresses did not significantly change the sensitivity of most E. sakazakii strains to ionizing radiation.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  Data obtained established that most forms of environmental stress are unlikely to significantly enhance the resistance of E. sakazakii strains to lethal, low dose irradiation treatment.  相似文献

AIMS: To provide data on the effects on culture temperature and physiological state of cells on heat resistance of Enterococcus faecium, which may be useful in establishing pasteurization procedures. METHODS AND RESULTS: The heat resistance of this Ent. faecium (ATCC 49624 strain) grown at different temperatures was monitored at various stages of growth. In all cases, the bacterial cells in the logarithmic phase of growth were more heat sensitive. For cells which had entered in the stationary phase, D70 values of 0.53 min at 5 degrees C, 0.74 min at 10 degrees C, 0.83 min at 20 degrees C, 0.79 min at 30 degrees C, 0.63 min at 37 degrees C, 0.48 min at 40 degrees C and 0.41 min at 45 degrees C were found. By extending the incubation times cells were more heat resistant as stationary phase progressed, although a different pattern was observed for cells grown at different temperatures. At the lower temperatures heat resistance increased progressively, reaching D70 values of 1.73 min for cells incubated at 5 degrees C for 50 days and 1.04 min for those grown at 10 degrees C for 16 days. At other temperatures assayed heat resistance became stable for late stationary phase cells, reaching D70 values of 1.05, 1.08 and 1.01 min for cultures incubated at 20, 30 and 37 degrees C. Heat resistance of cells obtained at higher temperatures, 40 and 45 degrees C, was significantly lower, with D70 values of 0.76 and 0.67 min, respectively. Neither the growth temperature nor the growth phase modified the z-values significantly. CONCLUSIONS: D70 values obtained for Ent. faecium (ATCC 49624) varies from 0.33 to 1.73 min as a function of culture temperature and physiological state of cells. However, z values calculated were not significantly influenced by these factors. A mean value of 4.50 +/- 0.39 degrees C was found. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Overall results strongly suggest that, to establish heat processing conditions of pasteurized foods ensuring elimination of Ent. faecium, it is advisable to take into account the complex interaction of growth temperature and growth phase of cells acting on bacterial thermal resistance.  相似文献

AIMS: The effects of stresses imposed on bacterial contaminants during food processing and treatment of packaging material were evaluated on the food pathogen Bacillus cereus. METHODS AND RESULTS: Conditions were established which allowed the cells to adapt to heat, ethanol and hydrogen peroxide stresses, but not to osmotic shock. Cross protection between stresses indicated a clear hierarchy of resistance with salt protecting against hydrogen peroxide, which protected against ethanol, which protected against heat shock. The cultures were shown to be most sensitive to heat, ethanol and oxidative stress at mid-exponential phase and to become resistant at stationary phase. Adaptive levels of stressor were found to induce synthesis of general stress and stress-specific proteins and differential accumulation of proteins was demonstrated between heat- or salt-stressed and unstressed cells. CONCLUSIONS: Sequencing revealed that a number of glycolytic enzymes were regulated by heat and osmotic shocks and that the chaperone GroEL was induced by heat shock. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The implications of the physiological data in designing storage and processing conditions for food are discussed. The identification of stress-regulated proteins reveals a clear role for glycolysis in adaptation to heat shock and osmotic stress.  相似文献

AIMS: To identify enterococci isolated from sheep milk cheese--bryndza, and to compare differences in the composition of enterococcal microflora affected by the season, and to evaluate the potential presence of vancomycin resistance and virulence determinants. METHODS AND RESULTS: Bacterial strains were isolated during analysis of bryndza cheese and identified on the genus and species level by phenotypic methods and with commercial biochemical sets. The identification of the species, Enterococcus faecium, Ent. durans and Ent. faecalis, was confirmed by PCR using species-specific primers for ddl genes. PCR was also used for assessment of presence of vanA and vanB genes and virulence determinants gelE, agg and cytolysin genes namely: cylL(L), cylL(S), cylM, cylB and cylA. Among 308 Enterococcus sp. strains, 177 isolates were proved to be Ent. faecium, 59 to be Ent. durans and 41 to be Ent. faecalis. Vancomycin resistance genes vanA and vanB were not detected. Agar plate testing confirmed their absence. Gene gelE, however, was found in 20 Ent. faecalis isolates, but only 13 of them showed gelatinase-positive phenotype. Seven isolates had five cytolysin genes, but none of the isolates exhibited a positive haemolytic phenotype. Four isolates possessed the agg gene. The prevalence of Ent. faecium species was highest in samples from the winter season harvest. CONCLUSIONS: Ent. faecium is the dominant enterococcal species in bryndza cheese and the most prevalent in the winter season product. None of the Enterococcus sp. strains was proved to have vanA or vanB genes and the vancomycin resistance. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: To our knowledge, this is the first report of enterococcal microflora in bryndza cheese and its evaluation for the presence of vanA and vanB genes as well as virulence determinants.  相似文献

Aims:  To investigate the effect of the biosurfactants surfactin and rhamnolipids on the adhesion of the food pathogens Listeria monocytogenes , Enterobacter sakazakii and Salmonella Enteritidis to stainless steel and polypropylene surfaces.
Methods and Results:  Quantification of bacterial adhesion was performed using the crystal violet staining technique. Preconditioning of surfaces with surfactin caused a reduction on the number of adhered cells of Ent. sakazakii and L. monocytogenes on stainless steel. The most significant result was obtained with L. monocytogenes where number of adhered cells was reduced by 102 CFU cm−2. On polypropylene, surfactin showed a significant decrease on the adhesion of all strains. The adsorption of surfactin on polystyrene also reduces the adhesion of L. monocytogenes and Salm. Enteritidis growing cells. For short contact periods using nongrowing cells or longer contact periods with growing cells, surfactin was able to delay bacterial adhesion.
Conclusions:  The prior adsorption of surfactin to solid surfaces contributes on reducing colonization of the pathogenic bacteria.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  This is the first work investigating the effect of surfactin on the adhesion of the food pathogens L. monocytogenes , Ent. sakazakii and Salm. Enteritidis to polypropylene and stainless steel surfaces.  相似文献

AIMS: Comparison of enterocins produced by six Enterococcus faecium strains and one Ent. faecalis strain isolated from different origin with regard to their microbiological and biochemical characteristics in view of their technological potential and practical use. METHODS AND RESULTS: The seven enterococci were sensitive to the glycopeptide antibiotics vancomycin and teicoplanin and did not show haemolytic activity. The absence of the glycopeptide-resistant genotypes and the genes involved in the production of the lantibiotic cytolysin was confirmed by PCR. The enterocins were active towards Listeria innocua and other lactic acid bacteria. Their temperature stability was dependent on the pH and their activity was higher at acidic pH. A bactericidal and bacteriolytic effect was shown. PCR analyses revealed that the gene of enterocin A was present in the genome of Ent. faecium CCM 4231, Ent. faecium 306 I.2.20 and Ent. faecalis Y; both enterocin A and B genes were present in the genome of Ent. faecium LMG 11423T, Ent. faecium RZS C5 and Ent. faecium RZS C13. Enterocin P was detected in the genome of Ent. faecium RZS C5 and Ent. faecium RZS C13. No signal was found for Ent. faecium SF 68. Enterocins from Ent. faecium RZS C5, Ent. faecium RZS C13 and Ent. faecium SF 68 were purified to homogeneity. CONCLUSIONS: Ent. faecium RZS C5 and Ent. faecium RZS C13 produced an enterocin with a molecular mass of 5460 and 5477 Da, respectively, which was in the range of that of enterocin B. The amino acid sequence analysis of the enterocin from Ent. faecium RZS C13 revealed 24 N-terminal residues, which were identical to those of enterocin B. The enterocin from Ent. faecium SF 68 had a molecular mass of 4488 Da, which did not correspond to any enterocin known so far. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The number of characterized enterocins is increasing. As this type of work is tedious and time-consuming, it may be interesting to include PCR as a first step to know if the Enterococcus strain in study produces either a known or a new enterocin. Also, it is important to check the absence of cytolysin and resistance to vancomycin for a further application of the Enterococcus strain in food or health applications.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine survival and growth characteristics of Enterobacter sakazakii in infant rice cereal as affected by type of liquid used for reconstitution and storage temperature after reconstitution. METHODS AND RESULTS: A commercially manufactured dry infant rice cereal was reconstituted with water, apple juice, milk, or liquid infant formula, inoculated with a 10-strain mixture of E. sakazakii at populations of 0.27, 0.93, and 9.3 CFU ml(-1), and incubated at 4, 12, 21 or 30 degrees C for up to 72 h. Growth did not occur in cereal reconstituted with apple juice, regardless of storage temperature, or in cereal reconstituted with water, milk, or formula and stored at 4 degrees C. The lag time for growth in cereal reconstituted with water, milk, or formula was decreased as the incubation temperature (12, 21 and 30 degrees C) was increased. Upon reaching maximum populations of 7-8 log10 CFU ml(-1), in some instances populations decreased to nondetectable levels during subsequent storage which was concurrent with decreases in pH. CONCLUSIONS: Enterobacter sakazakii initially at very low populations can rapidly grow in infant rice cereal reconstituted with water, milk, or infant formula. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Reconstituted infant rice cereal can support luxuriant growth of E. sakazakii. Reconstituted cereal that is not immediately consumed should be discarded or stored at a temperature at which E. sakazakii and other food-borne pathogens cannot grow.  相似文献

The plasmodium of Physarum polycephalum grows without cytokinesis and shows an active cytoplasmic streaming under wet and nutritious conditions. It can undergo reversible differentiation into several types of dormancy to survive in adverse environments. Temperature change or osmotic stress leads to cytoplasmic division of the plasmodium into cells containing one or more nuclei: these form a macrocyst, the spherule. Desiccation also induces cell division of the plasmodium followed by formation of a sclerotium, a dormant body resistant to dry stress. More than half of the actin in a sclerotium is phosphorylated at a single site, threonine 203, resulting in loss of its ability to polymerize into actin filaments. In the present study, actin phosphorylation was found in the sclerotium but not in either the plasmodium or in the spherule. This result suggests that phosphorylation of sclerotium actin may be related to the mechanism associated with desiccation resistance rather than morphological changes through cell compartmentalization in the macrocyst formation. Moreover. dephosphorylation of the phosphorylated form of sclerotium actin began within 5 min after addition of water. Dephosphorylation was not affected by sucrose and sorbitol sugars, but was inhibited by ammonium bicarbonate, ammonium phosphate, sodium phosphate, NaCl, and KCl in a dose-dependent manner. On the other hand, in germination of the sclerotium there was measurable sensitivity to both carbohydrates and salts. Actin dephosphorylation seems to be one of the important processes in the early phase of sclerotium germination.  相似文献

It may be that land-races of sorghum (Sorghum sp.) and millet[Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke] which evolved along geographicalgradients of rainfall in Africa and India, differ in their droughtresistance. Any physiological attributes found to be correlatedwith low rainfall might be important and effective characteristicsfor crop production in dry regions. Twenty land-races were chosen which evolved along geographicalgradients of rainfall, seven millets from India, six sorghumsfrom Mali, and seven sorghums from the Sudan. Races were evaluatedfor their growth potential and plant water relations under hydroponicsconditions in a growth chamber. A water stress treatment wasimposed by adding polyethylene glycol-8000 to the nutrient solution, giving a solute water potential of -0.5 MPa, compared with acontrol solution at 003 MPa. Drought resistance, in terms of relatively less growth inhibitionunder stress, was higher in races from dry regions than in racesfrom humid regions. Of all the physiological variables measured[carbon exchange rate, (CER), transpiration, transpiration ratio(CER/transpiration), leaf diffusive resistance, leaf water potentialand osmotic adjustment], only osmotic adjustment under stresswas generally correlated with average rainfall at each race'sorigin, indicating greater osmotic adjustment in land-racesfrom drier regions. Races with a greater capacity for osmoticadjustment were characterized by smaller plants with high ratesof transpiration and low rates of leaf senescence under stress. The carbon exchange rate per unit leaf area increased as liveleaf area decreased under stress due to leaf senescence. Thus, drought resistant races under stress tended to have lower CERper unit live leaf area (but not per plant) than susceptibleraces. Transpiration ratios under stress were lower in resistantthan in susceptible races, mainly because resistant races hadhigher transpiration. The results for the measured variables showed a general trendfor greater drought resistance in sorghum than in millet, indicatingthat the commonly observed adapation of the millets to dry environmentsmay be due to other factors, such as drought escape or heattolerance.
