Be in motion . .

Most Apicomplexan are obligate intracellular parasites and at different steps of their life cycle they invade host cells. The invasive forms are generally called zoites and the majority of them largely depend on a unique form of gliding motility to invade cells. Although the parasite intracellular motor complex that drives gliding motility and/or invasion is shared across different parasite stages and species, the extracellular transmembrane adhesins required to recognize and bind host molecules are not only species‐ but also stage‐specific (even if homologues). This is not such a surprise as different parasite stages interact with different hosts or distinct host cells. In this issue, Siden‐Kiamos et al. shows that specificity extends into the parasite cell, affecting how motility is regulated. Why is specificity occurring at this level? And how important is it? These are critical issues that will be hopefully addressed in the near future.     

Carotenoids in fish. XXII. Changes in carotenoids in Cyprinus carpio L.

The author investigated the presence of various carotenoids in the different parts of the body of Cyprinus carpio L. by means of columnar and thinlayer chromatography.The material in the form of the fertilized eggs, week-old fry, month-old fry, four-months old fry, one-year old fry and marketable carp were investigated.Yugoslavian carp brought to Poland as fry, and hybrid the wild carp crossed with of the cultivation carp, were also taken for analysis. The carotenoid content of Cyprinus carpio bred in waters polluted by municipal wastes and specimens suffering from diseases of the airbladder was also determined.The content of carotenoids, the provitamin of vitamin A, in Cyprinus carpio depends of many factors existing during the cultivation of these fish.

Abstract

A single, small moss leaf has been found among very small amounts of contents extracted from the Tyrolean Iceman's colon. It belongs to the species Neckera complanata Hedw., a woodland moss of low to moderate altitudes. The leaf was accidently ingested and not consumed as food.     

V.A.C. instillation: in vitro model. Part 1.

The reproducibility of a V.A.C. (Vacuum Assisted Closure) instillation system was investigated by means of an in vitro model. The relation between the volume of a delivered solution and its removal from the system was studied in foams of various size. The relationship of instillation time periods and the volume of delivered solution was determined.     

Pohlia andrewsii J. Shaw in the U.S.S.R.

Abstract

P. andrewsii appears to be widespread in the arctic regions of the U.S.S.R. and also in mountains of southern Siberia, the Altai Mountains. Except in the mountains of Central and Northern Europe the range of P. andrewsii does not overlap with P. annotina and P. camptotrachela.
