Extracellular ATP (eATP) is now recognized as an important signaling agent in plant growth and defense response to environmental stimuli. eATP has dual functions in plant cell signaling, which is largely dependent on its concentration in the extracellular matrix (ECM). A lethal level of eATP (extremely low or high) causes cell death, whereas a moderate level of eATP benefits plant growth and development. Ecto-apyrases (Nucleoside Triphosphate-Diphosphohydrolase) help control the eATP concentrations in the ECM, and thus contributing to the mediation of plant growth and defense response upon environmental stress. In this review, we summarize eATP signaling in plants and highlight the correlation between eATP homeostasis control and programmed cell death.

Progesterone is a mammalian gonadal hormone. In the current study, we identified and quantified progesterone in a range of higher plants by using GC-MS and examined its effects on the vegetative growth of plants. The growth of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) seedlings was promoted by progesterone at low concentrations but suppressed at higher concentrations under both light and dark growth conditions. The growth of the gibberellin-deficient mutant lh of pea (Pisum sativum) was also promoted by progesterone. An earlier study demonstrated that progesterone binds to MEMBRANE STEROID BINDING PROTEIN 1 (MSBP1) of Arabidopsis. In this work, we cloned the homologous genes of Arabidopsis, MSBP2 and STEROID BINDING PROTEIN (SBP), as well as of rice (Oryza sativa), OsMSBP1, OsMSBP2 and OsSBP and examined their expression in plant tissues. All of these genes, except OsMSBP1, were expressed abundantly in plant tissues. The roles of progesterone in plant growth were also discussed.

Plant hormones regulate plant growth and development by affecting an array of cellular, physiological, and developmental processes, including, but not limited to, cell division and elongation, stomatal regulation, photosynthesis, transpiration, ion uptake and transport, initiation of leaf, flower and fruit development, and senescence. Environmental factors such as salinity, drought, and extreme temperatures may cause a reduction in plant growth and productivity by altering the endogenous levels of plant hormones, sensitivity to plant hormones, and/or signaling pathways. Molecular and physiological studies have determined that plant hormones and abiotic stresses have interactive effects on a number of basic biochemical and physiological processes, leading to reduced plant growth and development. Various strategies have been considered or employed to maximize plant growth and productivity under environmental stresses such as salt-stress. A fundamental approach is to develop salt-tolerant plants through genetic means. Breeding for salt tolerance, however, is a long-term endeavor with its own complexities and inherent difficulties. The success of this approach depends, among others, on the availability of genetic sources of tolerance and reliable screening techniques, identification and successful transfer of genetic components of tolerance to desired genetic backgrounds, and development of elite breeding lines and cultivars with salt tolerance and other desirable agricultural characteristics. Such extensive processes have delayed development of successful salt-tolerant cultivars in most crop species. An alternative and technically simpler approach is to induce salt tolerance through exogenous application of certain plant growth–regulating compounds. This approach has gained significant interest during the past decade, when a wealth of new knowledge has become available on the beneficial roles of the six classes of plant hormones (auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid, ethylene, and brassinosteroids) as well as several other plant growth–regulating substances (jasmonates, salicylates, polyamines, triacontanol, ascorbic acid, and tocopherols) on plant stress tolerance. Among these, brassinosteroids (BRs) and salicylic acid (SA) have been studied most extensively. Both BRs and SA are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom, affecting plant growth and development in many different ways, and are known to improve plant stress tolerance. In this article, we review and discuss the current knowledge and possible applications of BRs and SA that could be used to mitigate the harmful effects of salt-stress in plants. We also discuss the roles of exogenous applications of BRs and SA in the regulation of various biochemical and physiological processes leading to improved salt tolerance in plants.

To date, several classes of hormones have been described that influence plant development, including auxins, cytokinins, ethylene, and, more recently, brassinosteroids. However, it is known that many fungal and bacterial species produce substances that alter plant growth that, if naturally present in plants, might represent novel classes of plant growth regulators. Alkamides are metabolites widely distributed in plants with a broad range of biological activities. In this work, we investigated the effects of affinin, an alkamide naturally occurring in plants, and its derivates, N-isobutyl-2E-decenamide and N-isobutyl-decanamide, on plant growth and early root development in Arabidopsis. We found that treatments with affinin in the range of 10(-6) to 10(-4) m alter shoot and root biomass production. This effect correlated with alteration on primary root growth, lateral root formation, and root hair elongation. Low concentrations of affinin (7 x 10(-6)-2.8 x 10(-5) m) enhanced primary root growth and root hair elongation, whereas higher concentrations inhibited primary root growth that related with a reduction in cell proliferating activity and cell elongation. N-isobutyl-2E-decenamide and N-isobutyl-decanamide were found to stimulate root hair elongation at concentrations between 10(-8) to 10(-7) m. Although the effects of alkamides were similar to those produced by auxins on root growth and cell parameters, the ability of the root system to respond to affinin was found to be independent of auxin signaling. Our results suggest that alkamides may represent a new group of plant growth promoting substances with significant impact on root development and opens the possibility of using these compounds for improved plant production.

The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that it depends on plant species used in the wetlands and their stubble growth attributes, as to whether monoculture or mixed wetland is superior in plant growth and nutrient removal. Monoculture and mixed wetland microcosms of five wetland plant species were studied. Significant differences in growth and aboveground biomass were found in the monoculture wetlands. Species that showed faster growth and larger biomass in monoculture wetland were also dominant in the mixed wetland. The mixed wetland exhibited similar biomass and root growth to the averages of five monocultures. ANOVA showed that there were very significant differences among the wetlands in removal rates of all the nutrients studied except nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The removal rates from the mixed wetland were generally comparable to the highest removal rates from the monocultures. The species exhibited different stubble growth attributes, with some species showing increasing stubble growth and removal rates, while other species showing decreasing stubble growth and removal rates. The results indicated that in both monocultures and mixed constructed wetlands, growth and nutrient removal rates depended on plant species, and attributes of plant stubble growth affected overall growth and nutrient removal capabilities.

This review focuses on feedback pathways that serve to match plant energy acquisition with plant energy utilization, and thereby aid in the optimization of chloroplast and whole-plant function in a given environment. First, the role of source–sink signalling in adjusting photosynthetic capacity (light harvesting, photochemistry and carbon fixation) to meet whole-plant carbohydrate demand is briefly reviewed. Contrasting overall outcomes, i.e. increased plant growth versus plant growth arrest, are described and related to respective contrasting environments that either do or do not present opportunities for plant growth. Next, new insights into chloroplast-generated oxidative signals, and their modulation by specific components of the chloroplast''s photoprotective network, are reviewed with respect to their ability to block foliar phloem-loading complexes, and, thereby, affect both plant growth and plant biotic defences. Lastly, carbon export capacity is described as a newly identified tuning point that has been subjected to the evolution of differential responses in plant varieties (ecotypes) and species from different geographical origins with contrasting environmental challenges.

Host plant growth changing with environmental conditions can impact the distribution of herbivores. The generalist herbivore fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is an invasive pest rapidly spreading across the world and has recently invaded southern China. We studied effects of environmental factors on the distribution of the fall armyworm and its host (maize) plant growth in the tropical mountainous area of Huize County, province of Yunnan, southwest China. Moreover, the relationships among the FAW distribution, environmental factors (altitude, temperature and humidity) and plant growth (mean kernel weight, kernel number per ear and ear weight) were analysed. The results showed that FAW predominated at altitude 1,243.3 m, temperature 21.4°C and humidity 82.1%. The host plant grew best at 1,200–1,312 m, 21.0–21.7°C and 81.2%–82.0%. Environmental factors indirectly influenced the distribution of FAW via the host plant growth. Compared with environmental factors, the host plant growth had a simplistic positive linear relationship with the density of FAW. FAW is less impacted by abiotic factors rather it determined by host plant prevalence, and thus the locations where maize plants grow best are preferred by FAW and should be the focus of insecticide applications. Understanding the distribution of FAW under various environmental conditions provides a valuable reference for Chinese maize production and food security.

Phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) effects on nodulation, nitrogenase activity and plant growth were studied in the root-hair-infected actinorhizal plant Alnus incana (L.) Moench. A split-root experiment, as well as a short-term experiment with entire root systems and a broader range of P concentrations, showed that P effects were specific on nodulation and not a general stimulation via a plant growth effect. These results indicate that nodule initiation and nodule growth have a high P demand. The split-root assay, comprising seven combinations of two N and two P levels, showed that P could counteract systemic N inhibition of nodulation, but did not counteract N inhibition of nitrogenase activity.

The plant growth‐promoting fungi (PGPF) have long been known to improve plant growth and suppress plant diseases. The PGPF Penicillium viridicatum GP15‐1 elicited plant growth and induced systemic resistance (ISR) in Arabidopsis thaliana against Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Pst), leading to a restriction of pathogen growth and disease development. Examination of local and systemic genes indicated that GP15‐1 did not modulate the expression of any of the tested defence‐related marker genes involved in salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA) and ethylene signalling pathways. Subsequent challenge of GP15‐1‐colonized plants with Pst bacterium primed Arabidopsis plants for enhanced activation of the JA‐inducible Atvsp (vegetative storage protein) gene at a later stage of infection. To assess the contribution of different signalling pathways in GP15‐1‐elicited plant growth and ISR, Arabidopsis genotypes implicated in SA signalling expressing the nahG transgene (NahG) or carrying disruption in NPR1 (npr1), JA signalling (jar1) and ethylene signalling (ein2) were tested. The GP15‐1‐induced plant growth and ISR were fully compromised in an ein2 mutation. Root colonization assay revealed that the inability of the ein2 mutant to express GP15‐1‐induced plant growth and ISR was not associated with reduced root colonization by GP15‐1. In conclusion, our results demonstrate the ethylene signalling pathway is involved in plant growth promotion and ISR elicitation by the PGPF P. viridicatum GP15‐1 in Arabidopsis. These results provide evidence that ethylene signalling has a substantial role in plant growth and disease resistance.

Although plant phosphate uptake is reduced by low soil temperature, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are responsible for P uptake in many plants. We investigated growth and carbon allocation of the AM fungus Glomus mosseae and a host plant (Plantago lanceolata) under reduced soil temperature. Plants were grown in compartmented microcosm units to determine the impact on both fungus and roots of a constant 2.7 °C reduction in soil temperature for 16 d. C allocation was measured using two (13)CO(2) pulse labels. Although root growth was reduced by cooling, AM colonization, growth and respiration of the extraradical mycelium (ERM) and allocation of assimilated (13)C to the ERM were all unaffected; the frequency of arbuscules increased. In contrast, root respiration and (13)C content and plant P and Zn content were all reduced by cooling. Cooling had less effect on N and K, and none on Ca and Mg content. The AM fungus G. mosseae was more able to sustain activity in cooled soil than were the roots of P. lanceolata, and so enhanced plant P content under a realistic degree of soil cooling that reduced plant growth. AM fungi may therefore be an effective means to promote plant nutrition under low soil temperatures.

Aims Grassland degradation has become a common problem worldwide. Several studies have analyzed the effects of nitrogen (N) addition on plant growth in grasslands, but few have considered its effects on plant growth in degraded grasslands. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of N addition on plant growth in grasslands with different levels of degradation in Inner Mongolia, China.

Both biotic and abiotic stresses are major constrains to agricultural production. Under stress conditions, plant growth is affected by a number of factors such as hormonal and nutritional imbalance, ion toxicity, physiological disorders, susceptibility to diseases, etc. Plant growth under stress conditions may be enhanced by the application of microbial inoculation including plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and mycorrhizal fungi. These microbes can promote plant growth by regulating nutritional and hormonal balance, producing plant growth regulators, solubilizing nutrients and inducing resistance against plant pathogens. In addition to their interactions with plants, these microbes also show synergistic as well as antagonistic interactions with other microbes in the soil environment. These interactions may be vital for sustainable agriculture because they mainly depend on biological processes rather than on agrochemicals to maintain plant growth and development as well as proper soil health under stress conditions. A number of research articles can be deciphered from the literature, which shows the role of rhizobacteria and mycorrhizae alone and/or in combination in enhancing plant growth under stress conditions. However, in contrast, a few review papers are available which discuss the synergistic interactions between rhizobacteria and mycorrhizae for enhancing plant growth under normal (non-stress) or stressful environments. Biological interactions between PGPR and mycorrhizal fungi are believed to cause a cumulative effect on all rhizosphere components, and these interactions are also affected by environmental factors such as soil type, nutrition, moisture and temperature. The present review comprehensively discusses recent developments on the effectiveness of PGPR and mycorrhizal fungi for enhancing plant growth under stressful environments. The key mechanisms involved in plant stress tolerance and the effectiveness of microbial inoculation for enhancing plant growth under stress conditions have been discussed at length in this review. Growth promotion by single and dual inoculation of PGPR and mycorrhizal fungi under stress conditions have also been discussed and reviewed comprehensively.

The use of beneficial soil microorganisms as agricultural inputs for improved crop production requires selection of rhizosphere-competent microorganisms with plant growth-promoting attributes. A collection of 563 bacteria originating from the roots of pea, lentil, and chickpea grown in Saskatchewan was screened for several plant growth-promoting traits, for suppression of legume fungal pathogens, and for plant growth promotion. Siderophore production was detected in 427 isolates (76%), amino-cyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activity in 29 isolates (5%), and indole production in 38 isolates (7%). Twenty-six isolates (5%) suppressed the growth of Pythium sp. strain p88-p3, 40 isolates (7%) suppressed the growth of Fusarium avenaceum, and 53 isolates (9%) suppressed the growth of Rhizoctonia solani CKP7. Seventeen isolates (3%) promoted canola root elongation in a growth pouch assay, and of these, 4 isolates promoted the growth of lentil and one isolate promoted the growth of pea. Fatty acid profile analysis and 16S rRNA sequencing of smaller subsets of the isolates that were positive for the plant growth-promotion traits tested showed that 39%-42% were members of the Pseudomonadaceae and 36%-42% of the Enterobacteriaceae families. Several of these isolates may have potential for development as biofertilizers or biopesticides for western Canadian legume crops.

Characterization of nodule growth and function, phosphorus and nitrogen status of plant tissues and host-plant growth of nodulated soybean ( Glycine max L. Merr.) plants developing and recovering from phosphorus deficiency was used to evaluate the role of phosphorus in symbiotic dinitrogen fixation. The sequence of physiological responses during recovery from phosphorus deficiency was; (1) rapid uptake of phosphorus, (2) rapid increases in the phosphorus concentration of leaves and nodules, (3) enhanced growth and function of nodules, (4) increased nitrogen concentrations in all plant organs and (5) enhanced plant growth. The sequence of physiological responses to onset of phosphorus deficiency was; (1) decreased phosphorus uptake, (2) decreased phosphorus concentrations in leaves and nodules, (3) decreased nodule function, (4) decreased nitrogen concentration in plant organs and (5) decreased plant growth. These results, in conjunction with previously published data (Sa and Israel, Plant Physiol. 97: 928–935, 1991), support an interpretation that the total response of symbiotic dinitrogen fixation in soybean plants to altered phosphorus supply is a function of both indirect effects on host-plant growth and more direct effects on the metabolic function of nodules.

Links were investigated between allometry of plant growth and dynamics of size structure of well-fertilized, irrigated crops of soybean (Glycine max L.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) grown at standard plant-population densities (D), as in commercial crops (D = 30, 6 and 8.5 plants m-2, respectively), and at high densities (2D). Patterns of size-dependent growth of shoot and seed mass accumulation were distinctly different among species. In soybean and sunflower, non-linear relationships between size and subsequent growth led to strong hierarchical populations in terms of both shoot and seed biomass. Curvilinear (soybean) and sigmoid (sunflower) size-dependent growth determined strongly asymmetrical (soybean) and bimodal (sunflower) frequency distributions of shoot biomass indicating predominantly size asymmetrical competition among individuals. In comparison, a lower plant-to-plant variation coupled with a typical linear allometry of growth to plant size indicated symmetrical two-sided plant interference in maize. Despite the weak development of hierarchies in shoot biomass, a strong inequality in reproductive output developed in crowded populations of maize indicating an apparent breakage of reproductive allometry.

Brassinosteroid (BR) and gibberellin (GA) are two groups of plant growth regulators essential for normal plant growth and development. To gain insight into the molecular mechanism by which BR and GA regulate the growth and development of plants, especially the monocot plant rice, it is necessary to identify and analyze more genes and proteins that are regulated by them. With the availability of draft sequences of two major types, japonica and indica rice, it has become possible to analyze expression changes of genes and proteins at genome scale. In this review, we summarize rice functional genomic research by using microarray and proteomic approaches and our recent research results focusing on the comparison of cDNA microarray and proteomic analyses of BR- and GA-regulated gene and protein expression in rice. We believe our findings have important implications for understanding the mechanism by which BR and GA regulate the growth and development of rice.
