We examine the effects of spacing and layout on the growth and form of 3- to 4-year-old Eucalyptus globulus in a farm forestry context. Four planting layouts were chosen. These represented the range commonly in use in farm forestry: block plantings (2Ǹ m), triple rows (2Ǹ m) at 10-m intervals, single rows (2᎒ m) and isolated trees (10᎒ m). The physiological significance of key results is interpreted in terms of changes in the parameters of a simple plantation growth model. Under conditions where levels of direct light are high, for example during summer, block-planted trees intercepted only 38% of the light intercepted by isolated trees. On a stand basis, however, the combination of incident radiation and ground coverage declined with lower stand densities. While stand leaf area index declined from around 6 to 1 with increased spacing, individual tree leaf areas rose from around 50 m2 in block plantings to 150 m2 in isolated trees. The proportion of above-ground biomass found in stems declined with increasing spacing as the mass in foliage and branches increased. Stems accounted for 65% of above-ground biomass in block-planted trees but only 35% in isolated trees. The contributions of leaves and branches correspondingly rose from 19% to 35% and from 16% to 29%, respectively. Changes in biomass distribution were accompanied by increasing branch number, branch thickness, flatter branch angles and the longer retention of lower branches with greater spacing. These changes have implications for the merchantability of the timber. The efficiency of above-ground radiation conversion was constant at 0.67 g MJ-1 irrespective of spacing. We estimated that foliar maintenance respiration (Rm) accounted for about 90% of above-ground Rm. On a stand basis Rm costs block plantings 23.90 t DM ha-1 year-1 (50% annual above-ground photosynthetic production) compared with 6.22 t DM ha-1 year-1 (40% annual above-ground photosynthetic production) in stands of isolated trees. 相似文献

The plant stress hypothesis suggests that some herbivores favour stressed plants, whereas the plant vigour hypothesis proposes that other herbivores prefer vigorous plants. The effects of a prior stress, that of frost damage, were examined on the subsequent growth of Eucalyptus globulus globulus and on the response of insect herbivores. Frost damage affected tree growth by reducing new leaf area and increasing specific leaf area (SLA). However, herbivore abundance was not affected by prior frost damage. Two feeding trials using Anoplognathus chloropyrus and Hyalarcta huebneri and a morphometric study of Ctenarytaina eucalypti were conducted to assess the performance of herbivores on trees that had suffered more or less frost damage. Consumption by A. chloropyrus and H. huebneri was unaffected by foliage origin (damaged versus healthy). Hyalarcta huebneri grew faster when fed leaves from previously damaged trees, and C. eucalypti from previously damaged trees were larger than those from healthy trees. Enhanced insect performance on frost damaged plants may have resulted from the high specific leaf area (most likely thinner) leaves. The herbivore abundance data did not support the hypothesis that previously frost damaged plants are preferred by insects. However, increased growth of H. huebneri and larger body size of C. eucalypti on damaged trees indicates that previously stressed trees may produce leaves of higher nutritional value. 相似文献

This study assessed the genotype by environment (G × E) interaction for diameter growth in 15 Eucalyptus globulus progeny trials in Australia. Single-site analyses revealed significant subrace and family-within-subrace variance in all trials. Across-site subrace () and family () correlations were estimated by linear mixed model analyses of pairs of trials. Using a factor analytic structure for subrace and family random terms in a multi-environment mixed model analysis, best linear unbiased predictions of subrace effects were obtained for each trial. These were then averaged for each of four states (Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia) and across all sites. Statistically significant G × E interaction was detected, and weighted means across states for and were 0.73 and 0.76, respectively. Nevertheless, the three subraces from the Otway Ranges were both fast growing and relatively stable in their ranks over all sites. We evaluated the sensitivity of subraces to changing environmental conditions, on the basis of random coefficient models regressing subrace performance on selected trial climatic variables. The results suggested differential susceptibility of subraces to water, light and (to a less extent) temperature stresses during summer. Moreover, using multivariate techniques to visualize and interpret the across-site correlation structure for subrace effects, we could identify site clusters of reduced G × E interaction related to soil water availability and evaporative demand during summer. A revised site-type classification using these factors should allow a better capture of genetic gains from breeding and deployment. 相似文献

Summary Flooding for up to 40 days induced morphological changes and reduced growth of 6-week-old Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eucalyptus globulus seedlings. However, the specific responses to flooding varied markedly between these species and with duration of flooding. Both species produced abundant adventitious roots that originated near the tap root and original lateral roots, but only E. camaldulensis produced adventitious roots on submerged portions of the stem. Flooding induced leaf epinasty and reduced total dry weight increment of seedling of both species but growth of E. globulus was reduced more. In both species dry weight increment of shoots was reduced more than dry weight increment of roots, reflecting compensatory growth of adventitious roots. We compared species composition, richness and height of plant communities in 20 paired plots underneath E. globulus individuals and open areas in two sites within its native range and each non‐native region. We also compared effects of litter leachates of E. globulus on root growth of seedlings in species from Australia, Chile, the U.S.A. and India.Results
In all sites and countries, the plant community under E. globulus canopies had lower species richness than did the plant community in open areas. However, the reduction was much greater in the non‐native ranges: species richness declined by an average of 51% in the eight non‐native sites versus 8% in the two native Australian sites. The root growth of 15 out of 21 species from the non‐native range were highly suppressed by E. globulus litter leachates, whereas the effect of litter leachate varied from facilitation to suppression for six species native to Australia. The mean reduction in root growth for Australian plants was significantly lower than for plants from the U.S.A., Chile and India.Main conclusions
Our results show biogeographical differences in the impact of an exotic species on understorey plant communities. Consistent with the novel weapons hypothesis, our findings suggest that different adaptations of species from the native and non‐native ranges to biochemical compounds produced by an exotic species may play a role in these biogeographical differences. 相似文献9.
The effects of age and environment on the expression of inbreeding depression in Eucalyptus globulus
Inbreeding adversely affects fitness traits in many plant and animal species, and the magnitude, stability and genetic basis of inbreeding depression (ID) will have short- and long-term evolutionary consequences. The effects of four degrees of inbreeding (selfing, f=50%; full- and half-sib matings, f=25 and 12.5%; and unrelated outcrosses, f=0%) on survival and growth of an island population of Eucalyptus globulus were studied at two sites for over 14 years. For selfs, ID in survival increased over time, reaching a maximum of 49% by age 14 years. However, their inbreeding depression for stem diameter remained relatively stable with age, and ranged from 28 to 36% across years and sites. ID for survival was markedly greater on the more productive site, possibly due to greater and earlier onset of inter-tree competition, but was similar on both sites for the diameter of survivors. The deleterious trait response to increasing inbreeding coefficients was linear for survival and diameter. Non-significant quadratic effects suggested that epistasis did not contribute considerably to the observed ID at the population level. Among- and within-family coefficients of variation for diameter increased with inbreeding degree, and the variance among the outcrossed families was significant only on the more productive site. The performance of self-families for diameter was highly stable between sites. This suggests that, for species with mixed mating systems, environmentally stable inbreeding effects in open-pollinated progenies may tend to mask the additive genotype-by-environment interaction for fitness traits and the adaptive response to the environment. 相似文献

An antibiotic- and siderophore-producing Pseudomonas strain isolated from virgin soils (with forest trees) displayed in vitro antibiosis against many plant pathogenic fungi. The presence of iron had no effect on this in vitro antibiosis. Seed bacterization improved germination, shoot height, root length, fresh and dry mass, enhanced yield and chlorophyll content of leaves in the five test crop plants under field conditions. Seed bacterization also reduced the number of infected brinjal plants grown in soil infested with Rhizoctonia solani. The strain produced a yellowish green siderophore in the standard succinate medium and both siderophore and a yellow viscous antibiotic compound in King's B medium. The results confirmed that the plant growth promotion was due to siderophore production whereas the disease suppression was due to the antibiotic substance. 相似文献

Drought is a major stress impacting forest ecosystems worldwide. We utilized quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis to study the genetic basis of variation in (a) drought resistance and recovery and (b) candidate traits that may be associated with this variation in the forest tree Eucalyptus globulus. QTL analysis was performed using a large outcrossed F2 mapping population from which 300 trees were phenotyped based on the mean performance of their open-pollinated F3 progeny. Progenies were grown in a glasshouse in a randomized complete block design. A subset of seedlings was subjected to a drought treatment after which they were rewatered and scored for damage and growth postdrought. Nondroughted seedlings were assessed for growth traits as well as lignotuber size and resprouting following severe damage to the main stem. QTL were detected for most traits. Importantly, independent QTL were detected for (a) drought damage and plant size, (b) drought damage and growth recovery, and (c) lignotuber size and resprouting capacity. Such independence argues that trade-offs are unlikely to be a major limitation to the response to selection and at the early life history stage studied; there are opportunities to improve resilience to drought without adverse effects on productivity. 相似文献

As many eucalypts in commercial plantations are poorly ectomycorrhizal there is a need to develop inoculation programs for
forest nurseries. The use of fungal spores as inoculum is a viable proposition for low technology nurseries currently producing
eucalypts for outplanting in developing countries. Forty-three collections of ectomycorrhizal fungi from southwestern Australia
and two from China, representing 18 genera, were tested for their effectiveness as spore inoculum on Eucalyptus globulus Labill. seedlings. Seven-day-old seedlings were inoculated with 25 mg air-dry spores in a water suspension. Ectomycorrhizal
development was assessed in soil cores 65 and 110 days after inoculation. By day 65, about 50% of the treatments had formed
ectomycorrhizas. By day 110, inoculated seedlings were generally ectomycorrhizal, but in many cases the percentage of roots
colonized was low (<10%). Species of Laccaria, Hydnangium, Descolea, Descomyces, Scleroderma and Pisolithus formed more ectomycorrhizas than the other fungi. Species of Russula, Boletus, Lactarius and Hysterangium did not form ectomycorrhizas. The dry weights of inoculated seedlings ranged from 90% to 225% of the uninoculated seedlings
by day 110. Although plants with extensively colonized roots generally had increased seedling growth, the overall mycorrhizal
colonization levels were poorly correlated to seedling growth. Species of Laccaria, Descolea, Scleroderma and Pisolithus are proposed as potential candidate fungi for nursery inoculation programs for eucalypts.

Summary. Root hairs are tubular cells resulting from a tip-localized growth in which calcium ions play a key role. Hypaphorine, an
indole alkaloid secreted by the fungus Pisolithus microcarpus during the formation of ectomycorrhizae with the host plant Eucalyptus globulus, inhibits root hair tip growth. Hypaphorine-induced inhibition is linked to a transient depolarization of the plasma membrane
and a reorganization of the actin and microtubule cytoskeletons. Here we investigated the activity of hypaphorine on calcium
distribution in E. globulus root hairs with the ratiometric fluorochrome calcium indicator Indo-1. In 85% of actively growing root hairs, a significant
but modest calcium gradient between the apex and the base was observed due to an elevated cytoplasmic calcium concentration
at the apical tip. Following exposure to 1 mM hypaphorine, the apical and basal cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration increased in 70 and 77% of the hairs, respectively, 10 min after treatment. This led to a reduced calcium gradient
in 81% of the cells. The hypothetical links between calcium concentration elevation, regulation of actin cytoskeleton dynamics,
and root hair growth inhibition in response to hypaphorine treatment are discussed.

We quantified the effects of matric and solute waterpotential on toluene biodegradation by Pseudomonasputida mt-2, a bacterial strain originally isolated fromsoil. Across the matric potential range of 0 to – 1.5 MPa,growth rates were maximal for P. putida at – 0.25MPa and further reductions in the matric potentialresulted in concomitant reductions in growth rates.Growth rates were constant over the solute potential range0 to – 1.0 MPa and lower at – 1.5 MPa. First ordertoluene depletion rate coefficients were highest at0.0 MPa as compared to other matric water potentialsdown to – 1.5 MPa. Solute potentials down to – 1.5 MPadid not affect first order toluene depletion ratecoefficients. Total yield (protein) and carbon utilizationefficiency were not affected by water potential, indicatingthat water potentials common to temperate soils were notsufficiently stressful to change cellular energyrequirements. We conclude that for P. putida: (1)slightly negative matric potentials facilitate faster growthrates on toluene but more negative water potentials resultin slower growth, (2) toluene utilization rate per cell massis highest without matric water stress and is unaffected bysolute potential, (3) growth efficiency did not differ acrossthe range of matric water potentials 0.0 to – 1.5 MPa. 相似文献

Eucalyptus plantations are among the most productive forest stands in Portugal and Spain, being mostly used for pulp production and, more recently, as an energy crop. However, the region's Mediterranean climate, with characteristic severe summer drought, negatively affects eucalypt growth and increases mortality. Although the physiological response to water shortage is well characterized for this species, evidence about the plants' recovery ability remains scarce. In order to assess the physiological and biochemical response of Eucalyptus globulus during the recovery phase, two genotypes (AL‐18 and AL‐10) were submitted to a 3‐week water stress period at two different intensities (18 and 25% of field capacity), followed by 1 week of rewatering. Recovery was assessed 1 day and 1 week after rehydration. Drought reduced height, biomass, water potential, NPQ and gas exchange in both genotypes. Contrarily, the levels of pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (Fv/Fm and φPSII), MDA and ABA increased. During recovery, the physiological and biochemical profile of stressed plants showed a similar trend: they experienced reversion of altered traits (MDA, ABA, E, gs, pigments), while other parameters did not recover (φPSII, NPQ). Furthermore, an overcompensation of CO2 assimilation was achieved 1 week after rehydration, which was accompanied by greater growth and re‐establishment of oxidative balance. Both genotypes were tolerant to the tested conditions, although clonal differences were found. AL‐10 was more productive and showed a more rapid and dynamic response to rehydration (namely in carotenoid content, φPSII and NPQ) compared to clone AL‐18. 相似文献

The relationship between shoot growth and foliar nitrogen (N) in E. globulus seedlings was studied in the glasshouse to determine standard values for N deficiency and toxicity diagnosis. Seedlings were grown for 9 weeks in yellow sand, at 10 rates of N, applied as ammonium sulphate, calcium nitrate or ammonium nitrate. Shoot dry weight (DW) increased linearly with N rate for all forms of N in the deficiency range. Seedlings continued to respond to higher rates of ammonium and ammonium nitrate than to nitrate. Maximum shoot DW for nitrate fed plants and ammonium nitrate fed plants were 51% and 84% respectively of ammonium fed plants. Total N concentration in the youngest fully expanded leaf (YFEL) ranged from 1.0% to 3.3% in deficient and adequate plants. The critical N concentration for deficiency diagnosis (corresponding to 90% maximum yield) in the YFEL, determined from these growth response curves averaged over all N forms, was 2.6% N. For ammonium nitrate fed plants, total N concentration in the YFEL for the severely deficient, deficient, adequate, and toxic ranges were <1.4%, 1.4–2.5%, 2.6–3.5%, > 4.3%. High total N concentrations were associated with growth depression and toxicity symptoms, which differed with N form. For nitrate fed plants, a total N concentration above 3.3% in the YFEL was associated with severe growth depression, and leaf tip necrosis. The adequate concentration range for ammonium nitrate was similar to values found on a field trial with 7 month old E. globulus trees grown on an exforest site. 相似文献
