Controversies exist regarding objective documentation of fatigue development with low-force contractions. We hypothesized that non-exhaustive, low-force muscle contraction may induce prolonged low-frequency fatigue (LFF) that in the subsequent recovery period is detectable by electromyography (EMG) and in particular mechanomyography (MMG) during low-force rather than high-force test contractions. Seven subjects performed static wrist extension at 10% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) for 10 min (10%MVC10 min). Wrist force response to electrical stimulation of extensor carpi radialis muscle (ECR) quantified LFF. EMG and MMG were recorded from ECR during static test contractions at 5% and 80% MVC. Electrical stimulation, MVC, and test contractions were performed before 10%MVC10 min and at 10, 30, 90 and 150 min recovery. In spite of no changes in MVC, LFF persisted up to 150 min recovery but did not develop in a control experiment omitting 10%MVC10 min. In 5% MVC tests significant increase was found in time domain of EMG from 0.067+/-0.028 mV before 10%MVC10 min to 0.107+/-0.049 and 0.087+/-0.05 mV at 10 and 30 min recovery, respectively, and of the MMG from 0.054+/-0.039 ms(-2) to 0.133+/-0.104 and 0.127+/-0.099 ms(-2), respectively. No consistent changes were found in 80% MVC tests. In conclusion, non-exhaustive low-force muscle contraction resulted in prolonged LFF that in part was identified by the EMG and MMG signals. 相似文献

The effects of fatigue on maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) parameters were examined by using force and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals of the biceps brachii muscles (BBM) of 12 subjects. The purpose of the study was to find the sEMG time interval of the MVC recordings which is not affected by the muscle fatigue. At least 10 s of force and sEMG signals of BBM were recorded simultaneously during MVC. The subjects reached the maximum force level within 2 s by slightly increasing the force, and then contracted the BBM maximally. The time index of each sEMG and force signal were labeled with respect to the time index of the maximum force (i.e. after the time normalization, each sEMG or force signal’s 0 s time index corresponds to maximum force point). Then, the first 8 s of sEMG and force signals were divided into 0.5 s intervals. Mean force, median frequency (MF) and integrated EMG (iEMG) values were calculated for each interval. Amplitude normalization was performed by dividing the force signals to their mean values of 0 s time intervals (i.e. ?0.25 to 0.25 s). A similar amplitude normalization procedure was repeated for the iEMG and MF signals. Statistical analysis (Friedman test with Dunn’s post hoc test) was performed on the time and amplitude normalized signals (MF, iEMG). Although the ANOVA results did not give statistically significant information about the onset of the muscle fatigue, linear regression (mean force vs. time) showed a decreasing slope (Pearson-r = 0.9462, p < 0.0001) starting from the 0 s time interval. Thus, it might be assumed that the muscle fatigue starts after the 0 s time interval as the muscles cannot attain their peak force levels. This implies that the most reliable interval for MVC calculation which is not affected by the muscle fatigue is from the onset of the EMG activity to the peak force time. Mean, SD, and range of this interval (excluding 2 s gradual increase time) for 12 subjects were 2353, 1258 ms and 536–4186 ms, respectively. Exceeding this interval introduces estimation errors in the maximum amplitude calculations of MVC–sEMG studies for BBM. It was shown that, simultaneous recording of force and sEMG signals was required to calculate the maximum amplitude of the MVC–sEMG more accurately. 相似文献

Fatigue is believed to be a major contributory factor to occupational injuries in machine operators. The development of accurate
and usable techniques to measure operator fatigue is therefore important. In this study, we used a novel method based on surface
electromyography (sEMG) of the biceps brachii and the Borg scale to evaluate local muscle fatigue in the upper limb after
isometric muscle action. Thirteen young males performed isometric actions with the upper limb at different force levels. sEMG
activities of the biceps brachii were recorded during the actions. Borg scales were used to evaluate the subjective sensation
of local fatigue of the biceps brachii after the actions. sEMG activities were analyzed using the one-third band octave method,
and an equation to determine the degree of fatigue was derived based on the relationship between the variable and the Borg
scale. The results showed that the relationship could be expressed by a conic curve, and could be used to evaluate muscle
fatigue during machine operation. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare muscular activation during five different normalization techniques that induced maximal isometric contraction of the latissimus dorsi. Sixteen healthy men participated in the study. Each participant performed three repetitions each of five types of isometric exertion: (1) conventional shoulder extension in the prone position, (2) caudal shoulder depression in the prone position, (3) body lifting with shoulder depression in the seated position, (4) trunk bending to the right in the lateral decubitus position, and (5) downward bar pulling in the seated position. In most participants, maximal activation of the latissimus dorsi was observed during conventional shoulder extension in the prone position; the percentage of maximal voluntary contraction was significantly greater for this exercise than for all other normalization techniques except downward bar pulling in the seated position. Although differences in electrode placement among various electromyographic studies represent a limitation, normalization techniques for the latissimus dorsi are recommended to minimize error in assessing maximal muscular activation of the latissimus dorsi through the combined use of shoulder extension in the prone position and downward pulling. 相似文献

Assessment of neuromuscular fatigue is essential for early detection and prevention of risks associated with work-related musculoskeletal disorders. In recent years, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) of surface electromyography (SEMG) has been used to evaluate muscle fatigue, especially during dynamic contractions when the SEMG signal is non-stationary. However, its application to the assessment of work-related neck and shoulder muscle fatigue is not well established. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to establish DWT analysis as a suitable method to conduct quantitative assessment of neck and shoulder muscle fatigue under dynamic repetitive conditions. Ten human participants performed 40 min of fatiguing repetitive arm and neck exertions while SEMG data from the upper trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles were recorded. The ten of the most commonly used wavelet functions were used to conduct the DWT analysis. Spectral changes estimated using power of wavelet coefficients in the 12–23 Hz frequency band showed the highest sensitivity to fatigue induced by the dynamic repetitive exertions. Although most of the wavelet functions tested in this study reasonably demonstrated the expected power trend with fatigue development and recovery, the overall performance of the “Rbio3.1” wavelet in terms of power estimation and statistical significance was better than the remaining nine wavelets. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the motor unit activation of the quadriceps (Q), hamstring (H), and gastrocnemius (G) muscle groups during a variety of plyometric exercises to further understand the nature of these exercises. Twenty-three athletes volunteered to perform randomly ordered plyometric exercises, thought to cover a continuum of intensity levels, including two-foot ankle hops; 15-cm cone hops; tuck, pike, and box jumps; one- and two-leg vertical jump and reach; squat jumps with approximately 30% of their 1RM squat load; and 30- and 61-cm depth jumps. Integrated electromyographic data were analyzed for each exercise using a one-way repeated-measures ANOVA. Results revealed significant main effects for the Q when all subjects are analyzed, as well as for separate analysis of men, women, subjects with vertical jumps greater than 50 cm, and those with vertical jumps less than or equal to 50 cm (p < or = 0.05). Significant main effects were also found for the G muscle group in the analysis of all subjects, as well as for men and subjects with vertical jumps greater than 50 cm (p < or = 0.05). No significant main effects were found for the H muscle group. Pairwise comparisons revealed a variety of differences among plyometric exercises. In some cases, plyometrics previously reported to be of high intensity, such as the depth jump, yielded relatively little motor unit recruitment compared with exercises typically thought to be of low intensity. Results can assist the practitioner in creating plyometric programs based on the nature of the motor unit recruitment. 相似文献

This paper studies the time-dependent power spectral density (PSD) estimation of nonstationary surface electromyography (SEMG) signals and its application to fatigue analysis during isometric muscle contraction. The conventional time-dependent PSD estimation methods exhibit large variabilities in estimating the instantaneous SEMG parameters so that they often fail to identify the changing patterns of short-period SEMG signals and gauge the extent of fatigue in specific muscle groups. To address this problem, a time-varying autoregressive (TVAR) model is proposed in this paper to describe the SEMG signal, and then the recursive least-squares (RLS) and basis function expansion (BFE) methods are used to estimate the model coefficients and the time-dependent PSD. The instantaneous parameters extracted from the PSD estimation are evaluated and compared in terms of reliability, accuracy, and complexity. Experimental results on synthesized and real SEMG data show that the proposed TVAR-model-based PSD estimators can achieve more stable and precise instantaneous parameter estimation than conventional methods. 相似文献

Cultured dermal fibroblasts become notably elongated when incorporated into a fibroblast-populated collagen lattice (FPCL). With time these fibroblasts reorganize the collagen responsible for reduction in lattice size. In monolayer the microinjection of Lucifer Yellow (LY) into cultured human fibroblasts shows cell coupling through gap junctions. Human fibroblasts residing on the periphery of a FPCL are at high density and the microinjection of LY into one of those fibroblasts demonstrates cell coupling. Cells within the center of an FPCL are at low density and appear to be independent of one another; however, the microinjection of LY into selected fibroblasts again demonstrates cell coupling. Hence the microinjection of cells in both the center and the edge of a FPCL pass dye to numerous neighbors. Does cell coupling influence FPCL contraction? FPCL incubated with heptanol and octanol, aliphatic alcohols that uncouple cells, inhibits lattice contraction, whereas hexanol, an aliphatic alcohol that does not uncouple cells, did not alter lattice contraction. Fibroblasts derived from connexin 43 (a transmembrane protein responsible for gap junction structures) knockout mice were demonstrated to lack gap junctional communications. When incorporated into a FPCL these cells failed to elongate and demonstrated retarded lattice contraction. Hence, gap junctional communications between fibroblasts incorporated into collagen lattices appear to optimize FPCL contraction and suggest a role for gap junctions in the organization of collagen fibers. 相似文献

Amplitude electromyography (EMG) is often used as an estimator of muscular load. Such measurements can, however, be biased by other factors, for example muscular fatigue. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of fatigue on amplitude parameters of the EMG. The test subjects raised the arm to 909 of abduction in the plane of the scapula. The hand was loaded with 0, 1 and 2 kg during 5, 3 and 2 min respectively. EMG was recorded from the trapezius muscle, and spectral and amplitude parameters were calculated. There was a significant rise of the EMG amplitude as a sign of fatigue at all load levels: 7% min−1 at 0 kg, 15% min−1 at 1 kg, and 19% min−1 at 2 kg. At 0 kg hand load there was no change of the spectral parameters but at higher load levels there was a significant decline of mean power frequency: 3% min−1 at 1 kg and 11% at 2 kg. The amplitude rise due to muscle fatigue may seriously jeopardize calibration measurements unless the duration of the load is kept limited. 相似文献

Apart from a few experimental studies muscle viscosity has not received much recent analytical attention as a determinant of the contractile process. This is surprising, since any muscle cell is 80% water, and may undergo large shape changes during its working cycle. Intuitively one might expect the viscosity of the solvent to be an important determinant of the physiological activity of muscle tissue. This was apparent to pioneers of the study of muscle contraction such as Hill and his contemporaries, whose putative theoretical formulations contained terms related to muscle viscosity. More recently, though, a hydrodynamic calculation by Huxley, using a solvent viscosity close to that of water, has been held to demonstrate that viscous forces are negligible in muscle contraction. We have re-examined the role of viscosity in contraction, postulating impulsive acto-myosin forces that are opposed by a viscous resistance between the filaments. The viscous force required, 104 times the hydrodynamic estimate, is close to recent experimental measurements, themselves 102–103 times the hydrodynamic estimate. This also agrees with contemporary measurements of cytoplasmic viscosity in other biological cells using magnetic bead micro-rheometry. These are several orders of magnitude greater than the viscosity of water. In the course of the analysis we have derived the force-velocity equation for an isolated half-sarcomere containing a single actin filament for the first time, and from first principles. We conclude that muscle viscosity is indeed important for the contractile process, and that it has been too readily discounted. 相似文献

The thermal denaturation of yeast enolase 1 was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) under conditions of subunit association/dissociation, enzymatic activity or substrate binding without turnover and substrate analogue binding. Subunit association stabilizes the enzyme, that is, the enzyme dissociates before denaturing. The conformational change produced by conformational metal ion binding increases thermal stability by reducing subunit dissociation. 'Substrate' or analogue binding additionally stabilizes the enzyme, irrespective of whether turnover is occurring, perhaps in part by the same mechanism. More strongly bound metal ions also stabilize the enzyme more, which we interpret as consistent with metal ion loss before denaturation, though possibly the denaturation pathway is different in the absence of metal ion. We suggest that some of the stabilization by 'substrate' and analogue binding is owing to the closure of moveable polypeptide loops about the active site, producing a more 'closed' and hence thermostable conformation. 相似文献
