Retropinna retropinna occurred in two forms in Lake Waahi, North Island, New Zealand. One form was characterized by high mean gill raker counts ( c . 28) and low mean vertebral counts ( c . 52)—similar to those of non-migratory, lake resident, native smelt in some other lakes of the lower Waikato River system. The other form had low mean gill raker counts ( c . 21) and high vertebral counts ( c . 60)—similar to migratory smelt at five sites along the lower Waikato River down to its estuary. The lake resident form was shorter but deeper bodied than the migratory form, as indicated by significant differences in mean length and in weight-length regression analyses.
The two forms overlapped in time of sexual maturity. As in other native lacustrine smelt populations of the lower Waikato system, the resident form had more but smaller eggs than the migratory form. The egg number to body length regression and the mean egg diameter of migratory Lake Waahi smelt were similar to those of lower Waikato River smelt. Evidence for reproductive separation of the two forms is presented and mechanisms controlling their meristic and other differences are considered.  相似文献

A review that considers in detail for the first time the taxonomic position, phenetic diversity, and principal features of the endemic species East Siberian char Salvelinus leucomaenis in the range from the northeast of Asia to Japan based on own and published data is provided. In comparison with other species of chars, S. leucomaenis is characterized by a smaller morphological and ecological diversity. A migratory form feeding on fish is dominant in the range. At the same time, parallel to large migratory forms, other life forms—resident riverine and lacustrine-riverine forms represented by males and females and riverine and dwarf males were found in S. leucomaenis. Individuals with various color variations occur everywhere. Resident forms are rare in the north of the range; they are dominant in the south of the range, in Japan.  相似文献

Hummingbirds (Family Trochilidae) are key pollinators in several biodiversity hotspots, including the California Floristic Province in North America. Relatively little is known about how hummingbird diets change throughout the year, especially with regard to how migratory hummingbirds affect resident hummingbirds at stopover sites. In this study, we examine how hummingbird species, migratory status, sex, geographic region and local plant diversity influence floral resource use before, during, and after an influx of migratory hummingbirds (primarily Rufous hummingbirds, Selasphorus rufus) across California. We expected distinct floral resource use based upon species’ migratory status (resident vs. migrant), sex, sampling period, and geographic region. We employed DNA metabarcoding to detect plant DNA in hummingbird fecal samples to analyze diet diversity, composition, overlap, and interaction networks. We found significant effects of sex, sampling period, and migratory status on the alpha and beta diversity of plant taxa present in fecal samples. Analyses of Anna's hummingbirds (Calypte anna) alone revealed that female fecal samples contained higher plant species richness. In addition to hummingbird-pollinated plants, fecal samples also contained non-ornithophilous plants and species of agricultural importance. Diet overlap and plant-pollinator network analyses revealed high overlap in plant taxa used between hummingbird species, and networks were more connected, less nested, and less specialized than null models. DNA metabarcoding is minimally invasive and provides a detailed view of hummingbird diet, permitting large-scale studies. Insights into hummingbird diets are especially valuable given the logistical difficulties of directly observing floral visitation and foraging across broad temporal and spatial scales.  相似文献

The specific morphological and biological features of dwarf chars Salvelinus malma curilus from three isolated populations of the southern Kuril Islands Kunashir and Iturup were studied. It was shown that brook dwarfs, in comparison with the migratory form of Salvelinus malma curilus, are characterized by a smaller diameter of spawned eggs (which corresponds to smaller yolk reserves and shorter embryos at hatching), retarded growth and morphogenesis of early juveniles, a mosaic pattern of paedomorphic and peramorphic morphological transformations, and a short lifespan. The population and age variability of the relative sizes and shape of otoliths was revealed. Dwarf populations are typically characterized by considerable morphological differences between males and females corresponding to those in migratory fish. The strategy of dwarfism is assumed to be built into the genome of the migratory ecotype of S. malma curilus.  相似文献

Two major forms of fumarate hydratase have been resolved in extracts prepared from a wide variety of mammalian cells by electrophoresis. Fractionation experiments with human and mouse cells suggest that one form (the slower migrating) is localized in the mitochondria, whereas the other form is predominant in the cytoplasm. Analysis of the segregation of the enzyme forms in human-mouse somatic cell hybrids indicates that a gene(s) necessary for the expression of both forms can be assigned to human chromosome 1 (confirmation of a previous assignment by van Someren et al., 1974). Electrophoretic analysis suggests that the two forms may be interrelated. Furthermore, they both exhibit identical reactivity toward anti-fumarate hydratase antiserum. It is suggested that a modification of one form may occur in vivo and that the modification may be important in determining the intracellular localization of the enzyme.  相似文献

Aim  It is generally believed that the migration programme constrains the dispersal and hence range sizes of migratory bird species. This conclusion is based on analyses of breeding ranges of migratory versus non-migratory (resident) terrestrial bird species, and rests on the assumption that there are no ecological or evolutionary constraints on extending the non-breeding range. To investigate this assumption, the abilities of migrant and resident terrestrial species to colonize new wintering areas were compared.
Location  Three major wintering regions of long-distance migrants: South America, sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Subcontinent.
Methods  It was determined whether the relative numbers of residents and short- and long-distance migrants were the same in those species that have dispersed to a novel wintering region as in the source species pools.
Results  At the species level, long-distance migratory species are more likely to have non-breeding ranges that include more than one of the above regions than resident species. This indicates that the dispersal of migratory species is less constrained than that of resident species. The pattern holds irrespective of the inclusion or exclusion of species associated with coastal, freshwater and wetland habitats, and also holds for ecological groups such as aerial feeders. The pattern is most pronounced between the regions separated by the strongest dispersal barriers (South America and sub-Saharan Africa).
Main conclusions  It is unlikely that the migration programme per se constrains dispersal, but rather that difficulties in establishing new non-breeding areas prevent range expansions in migrant species.  相似文献

Partial migration occurs in many taxa and ecosystems and may confer survival benefits. Here, we use otolith chemistry data to determine whether fish from a large estuarine system were resident or migratory, and then examine whether contingents display differences in modelled growth based on changes in width of otolith growth increments. Sixty-three per cent of fish were resident based on Ba : Ca of otoliths, with the remainder categorized as migratory, with both contingents distributed across most age/size classes and both sexes, suggesting population-level bet hedging. Migrant fish were in slightly better condition than resident fish based on Fulton''s K condition index. Migration type (resident versus migratory) was 56 times more likely to explain variation in growth than a model just incorporating year- and age-related growth trends. While average growth only varied slightly between resident and migratory fish, year-to-year variation was significant. Such dynamism in growth rates likely drives persistence of both life-history types. The complex relationships in growth between contingents suggest that management of species exhibiting partial migration is challenging, especially in a world subject to a changing climate.  相似文献

Identifying the patterns and processes driving dispersal is critical for understanding population structure and dynamics. In many organisms, sex-biased dispersal is related to the type of mating system. Considerably, less is known about the influence of life-history variability on dispersal. Here we investigated patterns of dispersal in masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) to evaluate influences of sex and life history on dispersal. As expected, assignment tests and isolation by distance analysis revealed that dispersal of marine-migratory masu salmon was male-biased. However, dispersal of resident and migratory males did not follow our expectation and marine-migratory individuals dispersed more than residents. This may be because direct competition between marine-migratory and resident males is weak or that the cost of dispersal is smaller for marine-migratory individuals. This study revealed that both sex and migratory life-history influence patterns of dispersal at a local scale in masu salmon.  相似文献

Juvenile bull trout Salvelinus confluentus from two geographically and ecologically distinct populations were compared with regard to their ability to compete with non-native brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis in an artificial stream, and with respect to their rates of oxygen consumption. Bull trout collected from a migratory population foraged more successfully against brook trout competitors than those from a resident population, capturing more of a limited amount of food items presented. The migratory population was also more aggressive (measured by the number of nips, chases and lateral threat displays) against brook trout competitors than the resident population. Bull trout from the migratory population had a higher oxygen consumption rate (203 mg O2 kg · hr-1) in the field than similar sized fish from the resident population (183 mg O2 kg · hr-1). These results suggest native bull trout have population-level variation in competitive ability against a non-native species and such competitive ability is positively associated with metabolism and migratory life history.  相似文献

Many organisms have invaded urban habitats, although the underlying factors initially promoting urbanization remain poorly understood. Partial migration may facilitate urbanization because such populations benefit from surplus food in urban environments during winter, and hence enjoy reduced fitness costs of migratory deaths. We tested this hypothesis in the European blackbird Turdus merula, which has been urbanized since the 19th century, by compiling information on timing of urbanization, migratory status, and population density for 99 cities across the continent. Timing of urbanization was spatially auto-correlated at scales up to 600 km. Analyses of timing of urbanization revealed that urbanization occurred earlier in partially migratory and resident populations than in migratory populations of blackbirds. Independently, this effect was most pronounced in the range of the distribution that currently has the highest population density, suggesting that urbanization facilitated population growth. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that timing of urbanization is facilitated by partial migration, resulting in subsequent residency and population growth.  相似文献

Migratory and resident hosts have been hypothesized to fulfil distinct roles in infectious disease dynamics. However, the contribution of resident and migratory hosts to wildlife infectious disease epidemiology, including that of low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV) in wild birds, has largely remained unstudied. During an autumn H3 LPAIV epizootic in free-living mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) — a partially migratory species — we identified resident and migratory host populations using stable hydrogen isotope analysis of flight feathers. We investigated the role of migratory and resident hosts separately in the introduction and maintenance of H3 LPAIV during the epizootic. To test this we analysed (i) H3 virus kinship, (ii) temporal patterns in H3 virus prevalence and shedding and (iii) H3-specific antibody prevalence in relation to host migratory strategy. We demonstrate that the H3 LPAIV strain causing the epizootic most likely originated from a single introduction, followed by local clonal expansion. The H3 LPAIV strain was genetically unrelated to H3 LPAIV detected both before and after the epizootic at the study site. During the LPAIV epizootic, migratory mallards were more often infected with H3 LPAIV than residents. Low titres of H3-specific antibodies were detected in only a few residents and migrants. Our results suggest that in this LPAIV epizootic, a single H3 virus was present in resident mallards prior to arrival of migratory mallards followed by a period of virus amplification, importantly associated with the influx of migratory mallards. Thus migrants are suggested to act as local amplifiers rather than the often suggested role as vectors importing novel strains from afar. Our study exemplifies that a multifaceted interdisciplinary approach offers promising opportunities to elucidate the role of migratory and resident hosts in infectious disease dynamics in wildlife.  相似文献

The genetic diversity of the resident and migratory forms of sockeye salmon is investigated in 14 populations from various water bodies of Kamchatka and the Commander Islands by ten loci of microsatellite DNA. There are considerable differences in the frequencies of alleles among the populations of kokanee from Lake Kronotskoe, the residual form of sockeye salmon from Lake Kopylie, and other populations analyzed. Clustering of samples corresponds to their geographic position. No differences in the frequencies of alleles of the investigated loci are found between two forms of resident sockeye salmon from Kronotskoe Lake. In the sockeye salmon from the Commander Islands, a relatively low genetic diversity is found, as well as the greatest remoteness from the other Kamchatka group.  相似文献

  1. Partial migration, where a portion of the population migrates between winter and summer (breeding) areas and the rest remain year‐round resident, is a common phenomenon across several taxonomic groups. Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain why some individuals migrate while others stay resident, as well as the fitness consequences of the different strategies. Yet, the drivers and consequences of the decision to migrate or not are poorly understood.
  2. We used data from radio‐tagged female (n = 73) willow ptarmigan Lagopus lagopus in an alpine study area in Central Norway to test if (i) the decision to migrate was dependent on individual state variables (age and body weight), (ii) individuals repeated migratory decisions between seasons, and (iii) the choice of migratory strategy was related to reproductive success.

Partially supporting our prediction that migratory strategy depends on individual state, we found that juvenile birds with small body sizes were more likely to migrate, whereas large juveniles remained resident. For adult females, we found no relationship between the decision to migrate or stay resident and body weight. We found evidence for high individual repeatability of migratory decision between seasons. Migratory strategy did not explain variation in clutch size or nest fate among individuals, suggesting no direct influence of the chosen strategy on reproductive success.
  4. Our results indicate that partial migration in willow ptarmigan is related to juvenile body weight, and that migratory behavior becomes a part of the individual life history as a fixed strategy. Nesting success was not affected by migratory strategy in our study population, but future studies should assess other traits to further test potential fitness consequences.

The Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) is culled in many states because of the real and presumed damages it inflicts on farmed and recreational fisheries and other ecosystem services. Resident cormorant colonies breeding in the southeastern United States are protected in some areas, so it is important to distinguish these from co-occurring but unprotected migratory cormorants. Migratory P. auritus are likely to contain helminthic parasite communities that differ from those of non-migratory, resident birds, because they will encounter a wider variety of habitats and intermediate host communities during migrations. Here, we document five distinct assemblages of helminth parasites collected from 218 P. auritus culled from 11 sites in Alabama, Minnesota, Mississippi, and Vermont. The assemblages of P. auritus parasites are distinct among many sampling locations and can be used to correctly predict where a host cormorant has been feeding. We provide evidence for mixing of cormorants at a regional scale using discriminant analysis, which suggests there is a single population of migratory cormorants. Furthermore, our models strongly differentiate between migratory and resident P. auritus in the southeastern United States. In conjunction with species-by species latitudinal and longitudinal trends, our models could serve as effective tools for managers interested in both the population control of migratory cormorants and the conservation of non-migratory, resident birds. Finally, parasite counts per host are notoriously variable with many zeros and a few large numbers, leading many researchers to use simple prevalence in their analyses. We show that an intermediate level of data resolution, using species occurrence ranks within individual hosts, behaves well statistically and provides the greatest discrimination among distinct host groupings.  相似文献

The bee-eaters (family Meropidae) comprise a group of brightly colored, but morphologically homogeneous, birds with a wide variety of life history characteristics. A phylogeny of bee-eaters was reconstructed using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequence data from 23 of the 25 named bee-eater species. Analysis of the combined data set provided a well-supported phylogenetic hypothesis for the family. Nyctiornis is the sister taxon to all other bee-eaters. Within the genus Merops, we recovered two well-supported clades that can be broadly separated into two groups along geographic and ecological lines, one clade with mostly African resident species and the other clade containing a mixture of African and Asian taxa that are mostly migratory species. The clade containing resident African species can be further split into two groups along ecological lines by habitat preference into lowland forest specialists and montane forest and forest edge species. Intraspecific sampling in several of the taxa revealed moderate to high (3.7-6.5%, ND2) levels of divergence in the resident taxa, whereas the lone migratory taxon showed negligible levels of intraspecific divergence. This robust molecular phylogeny provides the phylogenetic framework for future comparative tests of hypotheses about the evolution of plumage patterns, sociality, migration, and delayed breeding strategies.  相似文献

Locusts represent an impressive example of migratory polyphenism, with high densities triggering a switch from a solitarious, shorter dispersal range, and sometimes greenish phenotype to a gregarious and sometimes darker form exhibiting behavioral, morphological and physiological traits associated with long-distance migratory swarms. While such polyphenism has been well documented in Locusta migratoria and Schistocerca gregaria, the extent to which other grasshoppers exhibit this type of migratory polyphenism is unclear. Anecdotally, the Chinese grasshopper, Oedaleus asiaticus, forms migratory swarms comprised mostly of a darker, brown-colored morph, but also exhibits a non-migratory green-colored morph that predominates at low densities. In a population in Inner Mongolia not currently exhibiting migratory swarms, we found that while green and brown O. asiaticus are found concurrently across our sampled range, only brown grasshoppers were found in high densities. Differences between field-collected brown and green forms matched some but not key predictions associated with the hypothesis that the brown form is morphologically and physiologically specialized for gregarious migration. Controlling for body mass, brown forms had more massive thoraxes, abdomens and legs, and higher metabolic rates, but not more flight muscle or lipid stores. Further, the brown and green grasshoppers did not differ in gregarious behavior, and neither would fly in multiple lab and field trials. Lab or field-rearing at high densities for one-to-multiple juvenile instars caused grasshoppers to exhibit some morphological traits predicted to benefit migration (larger wings and a shift in relative mass from abdomen to thorax), but did not change color or induce flight behavior. One hypothesis to explain these data is that a migratory form of O. asiaticus is partially triggered by high field densities, but that existing ecological conditions blocked full expression of such traits (and outbreak swarms). Alternatively, color variation in this species may more tightly linked to other functions in this species such as crypsis or disease resistance, and mechanisms other than late-juvenile rearing density (e.g. genetic variation, maternal effects) may be more critical for promoting variation in color and/or migratory polyphenism.  相似文献

In many birds and mammals, male territorial aggression is modulated by elevated circulating concentrations of the steroid hormone testosterone (T) during the breeding season. However, many species are territorial also during the non-breeding season, when plasma T levels are basal. The endocrine control of non-breeding territorial aggression differs considerably between species, and previous studies on wintering birds suggest differences between migratory and resident species. We investigated the endocrine modulation of territorial aggression during the breeding and non-breeding season in a resident population of European stonechats (Saxicola torquata rubicola). We recorded the aggressive response to a simulated territorial intrusion in spring and winter. Then, we compared the territorial aggression between seasons and in an experiment in which we blocked the androgenic and estrogenic action of T. We found no difference in the aggressive response between the breeding and the non-breeding season. However, similarly to what is found in migratory stonechats, the hormonal treatment decreased aggressive behaviors in resident males in the breeding season, whereas no effects were recorded in the non-breeding season. When we compared the aggressive responses of untreated birds with those obtained from migratory populations in a previous study, we found that territorial aggression of resident males was lower than that of migratory males during the breeding season. Our results show that in a resident population of stonechats T and/or its metabolites control territorial aggression in the breeding but not in the non-breeding season. In addition, our study supports the hypothesis that migratory status does modulate the intensity of aggressive behavior.  相似文献

Large-scale introductions of resident and anadromous salmonids from exogenous sources and urbanization have led to major changes in, and concern for the fate of, indigenous fish populations of the Lake Sammamish/Lake Washington Basin. Specifically, introductions of kokanee (the resident form of Oncorhynchus nerka) from the Lake Whatcom Hatchery and sockeye (the anadromous form of O. nerka) from Baker Lake have caused uncertainty about the ancestry of the kokanee that currently spawn in the basin. We used nine microsatellite loci to investigate the inter-relationships of kokanee populations that spawn in streams in the Sammamish sub-basin, sockeye salmon populations that share spawning areas with the kokanee, Lake Whatcom Hatchery kokanee and Baker Lake sockeye, and an outgroup, Meadow Creek kokanee, from Lake Kootenay which drains into the upper Columbia River. We observed high levels of genetic variation (5–49 alleles per locus). Explicit tests of population sub-division revealed that collections from most spawning aggregations differed from each other. Observed allele frequency distributions strongly suggest that natural spawning kokanee in the basin are not descended from recent Lake Whatcom stock introductions. We found no compelling evidence to suggest that the kokanee sampled from spawning areas within the Lake Sammamish sub-basin have resulted from, or been altered substantially by, past introductions of non-native kokanee or sockeye.  相似文献

The diversity of life strategies and population structure of Kamchatka mykiss Parasalmo mykiss in the ecosystems of small salmon rivers of various types are considered. Hydrogeomorphological differences of the model rivers Kol and Kekhta are found. The preferred habitats are investigated, and their area is determined. It is shown that, in the Kol River, the mykiss having a resident life strategy predominated, and in the Kekhta River—the mykiss with migratory strategy. The key parameter controlling the prevalence of life strategies in each river is the ratio of the area of spawning grounds to the area of feeding grounds and their productivity. The hypothesis is confirmed that, in complex river systems, due to the diversity of biotopes and a higher productivity, the food resources are sufficient for maturation of mykiss and for realization of the resident life strategy (without migration to the sea for feeding). In small rivers of the channel type with their insufficient food resources, the specimens having a migratory life strategy prevail.  相似文献
