Social heterosis and the maintenance of genetic diversity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Genetic diversity in species is often high in spite of directional selection or strong genetic drift. One resolution to this paradox may be through fitness benefits arising from interactions of genetically diverse individuals. Advantageous phenotypes that are impossible in single individuals (e.g. being simultaneously bold and shy) can be expressed by groups composed of genetically different individuals. Genetic diversity, therefore, can produce mutualistic benefits shared by all group members. We define this effect as 'social heterosis', and mathematically demonstrate maintenance of allelic diversity when diverse groups or neighbourhoods are more reproductively successful than homogenous ones. Through social heterosis, genetic diversity persists without: frequency dependence within groups, migration, balancing selection, genetic linkages, overdominance, antagonistic pleiotropy or nonrandom allele assortment. Social heterosis may also offer an alternative evolutionary pathway to cooperation that does not require clustering of related individuals, nepotistic favouritism towards kin, or overt reciprocity.  相似文献

Systems involving many variables are important in population and quantitative genetics, for example, in multi-trait prediction of breeding values and in exploration of multi-locus associations. We studied departures of the joint distribution of sets of genetic variables from independence. New measures of association based on notions of statistical distance between distributions are presented. These are more general than correlations, which are pairwise measures, and lack a clear interpretation beyond the bivariate normal distribution. Our measures are based on logarithmic (Kullback-Leibler) and on relative 'distances' between distributions. Indexes of association are developed and illustrated for quantitative genetics settings in which the joint distribution of the variables is either multivariate normal or multivariate-t, and we show how the indexes can be used to study linkage disequilibrium in a two-locus system with multiple alleles and present applications to systems of correlated beta distributions. Two multivariate beta and multivariate beta-binomial processes are examined, and new distributions are introduced: the GMS-Sarmanov multivariate beta and its beta-binomial counterpart.  相似文献

Inference regarding the inclusion or exclusion of random effects in linear mixed models is challenging because the variance components are located on the boundary of their parameter space under the usual null hypothesis. As a result, the asymptotic null distribution of the Wald, score, and likelihood ratio tests will not have the typical χ(2) distribution. Although it has been proved that the correct asymptotic distribution is a mixture of χ(2) distributions, the appropriate mixture distribution is rather cumbersome and nonintuitive when the null and alternative hypotheses differ by more than one random effect. As alternatives, we present two permutation tests, one that is based on the best linear unbiased predictors and one that is based on the restricted likelihood ratio test statistic. Both methods involve weighted residuals, with the weights determined by the among- and within-subject variance components. The null permutation distributions of our statistics are computed by permuting the residuals both within and among subjects and are valid both asymptotically and in small samples. We examine the size and power of our tests via simulation under a variety of settings and apply our test to a published data set of chronic myelogenous leukemia patients.  相似文献

Social heterosis is when individuals in groups or neighbourhoods receive a mutualistic benefit from across‐individual genetic diversity. Although it can be a viable evolutionary mechanism to maintain allelic diversity at a given locus, its efficacy at maintaining genome‐wide diversity is in question when multiple loci are being simultaneously selected. Therefore, we modelled social heterosis in a population of haploid genomes of two‐ or three‐linked loci. With such linkages, social heterosis decreases gametic diversity, but maintains allelic diversity. Genomes tend to survive as complimentary pairs, with alternate alleles at each locus (e.g. the pair AbC and aBc). The outcomes of selection appear similar to fitness epistasis but are novel in the sense that phenotypic interactions occur across rather than within individuals. The model’s results strongly suggest that strong linkage across gene loci actually increases the probability that social heterosis maintains significant genetic diversity at the level of the genome.  相似文献

The genetic distance between two DNA sequences may be measured by the average number of nucleotide substitutions per position that has occurred since the two sequences diverged from a common ancestor. Estimates of this quantity can be derived from Markov models for the substitution process, while the variances are estimated using the delta method and confidence intervals calculated assuming normality. However, when the sampling distribution of the estimator deviates from normality, such intervals will not be accurate. For simple one-parameter models of nucleotide substitution, we propose a transformation of normal confidence intervals, which yields an almost exact approximation to the true confidence intervals of the distance estimators. To calculate confidence intervals for more complicated models, we propose the saddlepoint approximation. A simulation study shows that the saddlepoint-derived confidence intervals are a real improvement over existing methods.  相似文献

Quantitative DNA-DNA hybridization to measure the genetic distances among bacterial species is indispensable for taxonomical determination. In the current studies, we developed a method to determine bacterial DNA relatedness on a glass microarray. Reference DNAs representing a total 93 species of Enterobacteriaceae were arrayed on a glass microplate, and signal intensities were measured after 2 hr of hybridization with Cy3-labeled bacterial DNAs. All immobilized DNAs from members of the family Enterobacteriaceae were identified by this method except for DNAs from Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Y. pestis. These results suggest that quantitative microarray hybridization could be an alternative to conventional DNA-DNA hybridization for measuring chromosome relatedness among bacterial species.  相似文献

Many genetic distances have been developed to summarize allele frequency differences between populations. I review the evolutionary and statistical properties of three popular genetic distances: DS, DA, and theta;, using computer simulation of two simple evolutionary histories: an isolation model of population divergence and an equilibrium migration model. The effect of effective population size, mutation rate, and mutation mechanism upon the parametric value between pairs of populations in these models explored, and the unique properties of each distance are described. The effect of these evolutionary parameters on study design is also investigated and similar results are found for each genetic distance in each model of evolution: large sample sizes are warranted when populations are relatively genetically similar; and loci with more alleles produce better estimates of genetic distance.  相似文献

In populations derived from commercial hybrid rice combination Shanyou 10, F1 hetero-sis and F2 inbreeding depression were observed on grain yield (GYD) and number of panicles (NP). Using marker loci evenly distributed on the linkage map as fixing factors, the F2 population was divided into sub-populations. In a large number of sub-populations, significant correlations were observed between heterozygosity and GYD, and between heterozygosity and NP. This was especially true in type III sub-populations in which the genotype of a fixing factor was heterozy-gotes. In type III sub-populations, 15 QTL for GYD and 13 QTL for NP were detected, of which the majority exhibited over-dominance effects for increasing the trait values. This study showed that over-dominance played an important role in the genetic control of heterosis in rice.  相似文献

SUMMARY: A supervised nonlinear interpolation significantly improves the reliability of conversions from genetic distances to physical distances as compared with the linear ones. A webaccessible application was created that addresses this question with a graphical presentation that may be wrapped by local installations. MOTIVATION: Genetic linkage maps and radiation hybrid (RH) maps are based on the rate of uncoupling between linked genetic markers. These are usually measured in centiMorgan (cM) when uncoupling is originated by natural recombination or in centiRay (cR) for chromosomes that are irradiated artificially to separate the markers. Physical maps arise from genome-wide DNA sequencing and are measured in bp. This work was originally motivated as an extension of the software application Expressionview (Fischer et al., 2003), exploring its spectrum of appliance combining different mapping systems. The relationship between physical and genetic maps is known to be not always linear (Yu et al., 2001). The shift from the linear model seems to depend on local idiosyncrasies of the chromosomes and the kind of genetic map used. The present application addresses this problem for the first time.
