We determined the interactive effects of irradiance, elevated CO2 concentration (EC), and temperature in carrot (Daucus carota var. sativus). Plants of the cv. Red Core Chantenay (RCC) were grown in a controlled environmental plant growth room and exposed to 3 levels of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (400, 800, 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1), 3 leaf chamber temperatures (15, 20, 30 °C), and 2 external CO2 concentrations (C a), AC and EC (350 and 750 μmol mol−1, respectively). Rates of net photosynthesis (P N) and transpiration (E) and stomatal conductance (g s ) were measured, along with water use efficiency (WUE) and ratio of internal and external CO2 concentrations (C i/C a). P N revealed an interactive effect between PAR and C a. As PAR increased so did P N under both C a regimes. The g s showed no interactive effects between the three parameters but had singular effects of temperature and PAR. E was strongly influenced by the combination of PAR and temperature. WUE was interactively affected by all three parameters. Maximum WUE occurred at 15 °C and 1 200 μmol m−2 s− 1 PAR under EC. The C i /C a was influenced independently by temperature and C a. Hence photosynthetic responses are interactively affected by changes in irradiance, external CO2 concentration, and temperature. EC significantly compensates the inhibitory effects of high temperature and irradiance on P N and WUE.  相似文献

The response of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Akcent) to various photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFDs) and elevated [CO2] [700 μmol (CO2) mol−1; EC] was studied by gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, and pigment analysis. In comparison with barley grown under ambient [CO2] [350 μmol (CO2) mol−1; AC] the EC acclimation resulted in a decrease in photosynthetic capacity, reduced stomatal conductance, and decreased total Chl content. The extent of acclimation depression of photosynthesis, the most pronounced for the plants grown at 730 μmol m−2 s−1 (PPFD730), may be related to the degree of sink-limitation. The increased non-radiative dissipation of absorbed photon energy for all EC plants corresponded to the higher de-epoxidation state of xanthophylls only for PPFD730 barley. Further, a pronounced decrease in photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemical efficiency (given as FV/FM) for EC plants grown at 730 and 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1 in comparison with AC barley was related to the reduced epoxidation of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin back to violaxanthin in darkness. Thus the EC conditions sensitise the photosynthetic apparatus of high-irradiance acclimated barley plants (particularly PPFD730) to the photoinactivation of PS2. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Plant growth, contents of photosynthetic pigments, photosynthetic gas exchange, and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Heinong37] were investigated after it was inoculated with Sinorhizobium fredii USDA191 or treated with 5 mM (NH4)2SO4 (N5) and 30 mM (NH4)2SO4 (N30), respectively. In the plants following N5 fertilization, not only plant biomass, leaf area, and Chl content, but also net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), carboxylation efficiency (CE), maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) of photosystem 2 (PS2), and quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2) were markedly improved as compared with the control plants. There were also positive effects on plant growth and plant photosynthesis after rhizobia inoculation, but the effects were much less than those of N5 fertilization. For N30 plants there were no significant positive effects on plant growth and photosynthetic capacity. Plant biomass, P N, and g s were similar to those of N-limited (control) plants. ΦPS2 and photochemical quenching (qP) were obviously declined while content of carotenoids and non-photochemical quenching (qN) were significantly enhanced in N30 treated plants. This indicated that excess N supply may cause some negative effects on soybean plants.  相似文献

The anatomical features of leaves in 11 species of plants grown in a temperature gradient and a temperature + CO2 gradient were studied. The palisade parenchyma thickness, the spongy parenchyma thickness and the total leaf thickness were measured and analyzed to investigate the effects of elevated temperature and CO2 on the anatomical characteristics of the leaves. Our results show that with the increase of temperature, the leaf thickness of C4 species increased while the leaf thickness of C3 species showed no constant changes. With increased CO2, seven out of nine C3 species exhibited increased total leaf thickness. In C4 species, leaf thickness decreased. As for the trend on the multi-grades, the plants exhibited linear or non-linear changes. With the increase of temperature or both temperature and CO2 for the 11 species investigated, leaf thickness varied greatly in different plants (species) and even in different branches on the same plant. These results demonstrated that the effect of increasing CO2 and temperature on the anatomical features of the leaves were species-specific. Since plant structures are correlated with plant functions, the changes in leaf anatomical characteristics in elevated temperature and CO2 may lead to functional differences. Physiological measurements were used to investigate the dependence of photosynthesis on light, temperature, and intercellular carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the C4 marsh grass Spartina alterniflora. Functional relationships between these environmental variables and S. alterniflora physiological responses were then used to improve C4-leaf photosynthesis models. Field studies were conducted in monocultures of S. alterniflora in Virginia, USA. On average, S. alterniflora exhibited lower light saturation values (~1000 μmol m−2 s−1) than observed in other C4 plants. Maximum carbon assimilation rates and stomatal conductance to water vapor diffusion were 36 μmol (CO2) m−2 s−1 and 200 mmol (H2O) m−2 s−1, respectively. Analysis of assimilation-intercellular CO2 and light response relationships were used to determine Arrhenius-type temperature functions for maximum rate of carboxylation (V cmax), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity (V pmax), and maximum electron transport rate (J max). Maximum V cmax values of 105 μmol m−2 s−1 were observed at the leaf temperature of 311 K. Optimum V pmax values (80.6 μmol m−2 s−1) were observed at the foliage temperature of 308 K. The observed V pmax values were lower than those in other C4 plants, whereas V cmax values were higher, and more representative of C3 plants. Optimum J max values reached 138 μmol (electrons) m−2 s−1 at the foliage temperature of 305 K. In addition, the estimated CO2 compensation points were in the range of C3 or C3–C4 intermediate plants, not those typical of C4 plants. The present results indicate the possibility of a C3–C4 intermediate or C4-like photosynthetic mechanism rather than the expected C4-biochemical pathway in S. alterniflora under field conditions. In a scenario of atmospheric warming and increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations, S. alterniflora will likely respond positively to both changes. Such responses will result in increased S. alterniflora productivity, which is uncharacteristic of C4 plants.  相似文献

Low efficiency is a key problem confronting the development and application of phytoremediation technology. Based on political pressure to reduce CO2 emissions in China and the fact that CO2 is necessary for plant photosynthesis, the effects of captured CO2 fertilization on phytoremediation of soil di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) pollution by C3 plant (mung bean, Vigna radiata L.) and C4 plant (maize, Zea mays L.) were investigated. Results showed that DEHP pollution negatively affected the growth and rhizosphere environments of both plants. After CO2 fertilization, both plants had more biomass (aboveground, belowground, and total dry weight), higher alkaline phosphatase activity, and more microbes with DEHP tolerance in their rhizospheres. Superoxide dismutase activity in leaves of both plants decreased significantly. Microbial community composition in both rhizospheres changed. CO2 fertilization also increased plant uptake of DEHP, particularly in the roots, and decreased residual DEHP concentrations in the rhizospheres. These effects were more evident in the C3 than in the C4 plant. This study indicated that CO2 fertilization can enhance the phytoremediation process of polluted soil through promoting plant growth, improving the rhizosphere environment, and increasing plant uptake of DEHP, particular in a C3 plant. CO2 fertilization could be considered as a measure to enhance phytoremediation.  相似文献

The effects of long‐term (4 year) CO2 enrichment (70 Pa versus 35 Pa) and nitrogen nutrition (8 mm versus 1 mm NO3) on biomass accumulation and the development of photosynthetic capacity in leaves of cork oak (Quercus suber L., a Mediterranean evergreen tree) were studied. The evolution of photosynthetic parameters with leaf development was estimated by fitting the biochemical model of Farquhar et al. (Planta 149, 78–90, 1980) with modifications by Sharkey (Botanical Review 78, 71–75, 1985) to ACi response curves. CO2 enrichment had a small reduction effect on the development of the maximum CO2 fixation capacity by Rubisco (VCmax), and no effect over maximum electron transport capacity (Jmax), day‐time respiration (Rd) and Triose‐P utilization (TPU). However, there was a statistically significant effect of N fertilization and the interaction CO2 × N over the evolution of VCmax, Jmax and TPU. Relative stomatal limitation (estimated from ACi curves) was higher (+20%) for plants grown under ambient CO2 than for plants grown under elevated CO2. There was a significant effect of CO2 and N fertilization over total biomass accumulation as well as leaf area. Plants grown at elevated CO2 had 27% more biomass than plants grown at ambient CO2 when given high N. However, for plants grown under low N there was no significant effect of CO2 enrichment on biomass accumulation. Plants grown under low N also had significantly higher root : shoot ratios whereas there were no differences between CO2 treatments. The larger biomass accumulation of Q. suber under elevated CO2 is attributable to a higher availability of CO2 coupled to a larger leaf area, with no significant decrease in photosynthetic capacity under CO2 enrichment and elevated N fertilization. For low N fertilization, the effects of CO2 enrichment over leaf area and biomass accumulation are lost, suggesting that in native ecosystems with low N availability, the effects of CO2 enrichment may be insignificant.  相似文献

A controlled growth chamber experiment was conducted to investigate the short-term water use and photosynthetic responses of 30-d-old carrot seedlings to the combined effects of CO2 concentration (50–1 050 μmol mol−1) and moisture deficits (−5, −30, −55, and −70 kPa). The photosynthetic response data was fitted to a non-rectangular hyperbola model. The estimated parameters were compared for effects of moisture deficit and elevated CO2 concentration (EC). The carboxylation efficiency (α) increased in response to mild moisture stress (−30 kPa) under EC when compared to the unstressed control. However, moderate (−55 kPa) and extreme (−70 kPa) moisture deficits reduced α under EC. Maximum net photosynthetic rate (P Nmax) did not differ between mild water deficit and unstressed controls under EC. Moderate and extreme moisture deficits reduced P Nmax by nearly 85 % compared to controls. Dark respiration rate (R D) showed no consistent response to moisture deficit. The CO2 compensation concentration (Γ) was 324 μmol mol−1 for −75 kPa and ranged 63–93 μmol mol−1 for other moisture regimes. Interaction between moisture deficit and EC was noticed for P N, ratio of intercellular and ambient CO2 concentration (C i/C a), stomatal conductance (g s ), and transpiration rate (E). P N was maximum and C i/C a was minimum at −30 kPa moisture deficit and at C a of 350 μmol mol−1. The g s and E showed an inverse relationship at all moisture deficit regimes and EC. Water use efficiency (WUE) increased with moisture deficit up to −55 kPa and declined thereafter. EC showed a positive influence towards sustaining P N and increasing WUE only under mild moisture stress, and no beneficial effects of EC were noticed at moderate or extreme moisture deficits.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. HD 2329 and DL 1266-5) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv. MSFH 17 and MRSF 1754) plants were grown in field under atmospheric (360±10 cm3 m−3, AC) and elevated (650±50 cm3 m−3, EC) CO2 concentrations in open top chambers for entire period of growth and development till maturity. Net photosynthetic rate (P N) of wheat cvs. when compared at the same internal CO2 concentration (C i), by generating P N/C i curves, showed lower P N in EC plants than in AC ones. EC-grown wheat cultivars also showed a lesser response to irradiance than AC plants. In sunflower cultivars, P N/C i curves and irradiance response curves were not significantly different in AC and EC plants. CO2 and irradiance responses of photosynthesis, therefore, further revealed a down-regulation of P N in wheat but not so in sunflower under long-term CO2 enrichment. Wheat cvs. accumulated in leaves mostly sugars, whereas sunflower accumulated mainly starch. This further strengthened the view that accumulation of excess assimilates in the leaves under EC as starch is not inhibitory to P N.  相似文献

In an experimental site for reforestation of degraded area, three-year-old plants of Bertholletia excelsa Humb. & Bonpl. were subjected to different fertilization treatments: T0 = unfertilized control, T1 = green fertilization (branches and leaves) and T2 = chemical fertilization. Higher net photosynthetic rates (P N) were observed in T1 [13.2±1.0 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1] compared to T2 [8.0±1.8 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1] and T0 [4.8±1.3 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1]. Stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration rate (E) and water use efficiency (WUE) of individuals of T1 and T2 did not differ significantly, however, they were by 88, 55 and 63%, respectively, higher in T1 than in the control. The mean values of variable fluorescence (Fv), performance index (P.I.) and total chlorophyll [Chl (a+b)] were higher in T1. Our results indicate that green fertilization improves photosynthetic structure and function in plants of B. excelsa in young phase.  相似文献

Plants with the C4 photosynthetic pathway have predominantly one of three decarboxylation enzymes in their bundle sheath cells. Within the grass family (Poaceae) bundle sheath leakiness to CO2 is purported to be lowest in the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-malic enzyme (NADP-ME, EC 1.1.1.40) group, highest in the NAD-ME (EC 1.1.1.39) group and intermediate in the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PCK, EC 4.1.1.32) group. We investigated the hypothesis that growth and photosynthesis of NAD-ME C4 grasses would respond more to elevated CO2 treatment than NADP-ME grasses. Plants were grown in 8-1 pots in growth chambers with ample water and fertilizer for 39 days at a continuous CO2 concentration of either 350 or 700 µl l?1. NAD-ME species included Bouteloua gracilis Lag. ex Steud (Blue grama), Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm. (Buffalo grass) and Panicum virgatum L. (Switchgrass) and the NADP-ME species were Andropogon gerardii Vittman (Big bluestem), Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash (Little bluestem), and Sorghastrum nutans (L.) Nash (Indian grass). Contrary to our hypothesis, growth of the NADP-ME grasses was generally greater under elevated CO2 (significant for A. gerardii and S. nutans), while none of the NAD-ME grasses had a significant growth response. Increased leaf total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) was associated with greater growth responses of NADP-ME grasses. Decreased leaf nitrogen in NADP-ME species grown at elevated CO2 was found to be an artifact of TNC dilution. Assimilation (A) vs intercellular CO2 (Ci) curves revealed that leaf photosynthesis was not saturated at 350 µl l?1 CO2 in any of these C4 grasses. Assimilation of elevated CO2-grown A. gerardii was higher than in plants grown in ambient CO2. In contrast, B. gracilis grown in elevated CO2 displayed lower A, a trait more commonly reported in C3 plants. Photosynthetic acclimation in B. gracilis was not related to leaf TNC or nitrogen concentrations, but A:Ci curves suggest a reduction in activity of both phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.31) and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco, EC 4.1.1.39). Some adaptation of stomatal functioning was also seen in B. gracilis and A. gerardii leaves grown in elevated CO2. Our study shows that C4 grasses have the capacity for increased growth and photosynthesis under elevated CO2 even when water and nutrients are non-limiting. While it was the NADP-ME species which had significant responses in the present study, we have previously reported significant growth increases in elevated CO2 for B. gracilis.  相似文献

In sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) grown under controlled conditions and subjected to drought by withholding watering, net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) of attached leaves decreased as leaf water potential (Ψw) declined from −0.3 to −2.9 MPa. Although g s decreased over the whole range of Ψw, nearly constant values in the intercellular CO2 concentrations (C i) were observed as Ψw decreased to −1.8 MPa, but C i increased as Ψw decreased further. Relative quantum yield, photochemical quenching, and the apparent quantum yield of photosynthesis decreased with water deficit, whereas non-photochemical quenching (qNP) increased progressively. A highly significant negative relationship between qNP and ATP content was observed. Water deficit did not alter the pyridine nucleotide concentration but decreased ATP content suggesting metabolic impairment. At a photon flux density of 550 μmol m−2 s−1, the allocation of electrons from photosystem (PS) 2 to O2 reduction was increased by 51 %, while the allocation to CO2 assimilation was diminished by 32 %, as Ψw declined from −0.3 to −2.9 MPa. A significant linear relationship between mean P N and the rate of total linear electron transport was observed in well watered plants, the correlation becoming curvilinear when water deficit increased. The maximum quantum yield of PS2 was not affected by water deficit, whereas qP declined only at very severe stress and the excess photon energy was dissipated by increasing qNP indicating that a greater proportion of the energy was thermally dissipated. This accounted for the apparent down-regulation of PS2 and supported the protective role of qNP against photoinhibition in sunflower.  相似文献

Gas-exchange measurements were performed to analyze the leaf conductances and assimilation rates of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Desireé) plants expressing an antisense construct against chloroplastic fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase, EC 3.1.3.11) in response to increasing photon flux densities, different relative air humidities and elevated CO2 concentrations. Assimilation rates (A) and transpiration rates (E) were observed during a stepwise increase of photon flux density. These experiments were carried out under atmospheric conditions and in air containing 500 μmol mol−1 CO2. In both gas atmospheres, two levels of relative air humidity (60–70% and 70–80%) were applied in different sets of measurements. Intercellular CO2 concentration, leaf conductance, air-to-leaf vapour pressure deficit, and instantaneous water-use efficiency (A/E) were determined. As expected, assimilation rates of the FBPase antisense plants were significantly reduced as compared to the wild type. Saturation of assimilation rates in transgenic plants occurred at a photon flux density of 200 μmol m−2 s−1, whereas saturation in wild type plants was observed at 600 μmol m−2 s−1. Elevated ambient CO2 levels did not effect assimilation rates of transgenic plants. At 70–80% relative humidity and atmospheric CO2 concentration the FBPase antisense plants had significantly higher leaf conductances than wild-type plants while no difference emerged at 60–70%. These differences in leaf conductance vanished at elevated levels of ambient CO2. Stomatal response to different relative air humidities was not affected by mesophyll photosynthetic activity. It is suggested that the regulation of stomatal opening upon changes in photon flux density is merely mediated by a signal transmitted from mesophyll cells, whereas the intercellular CO2 concentration plays a minor role in this kind of stomatal response. The results are discussed with respect to stomatal control by environmental parameters and mesophyll photosynthesis. Received: 24 September 1998 / Accepted: 9 February 1999  相似文献

The effects of elevated CO2 concentrations on the photochemistry, biochemistry and physiology of C4 photosynthesis were studied in maize (Zea mays L.). Plants were grown at ambient (350 μL L−1) or ca. 3 times ambient (1100 μL L−1) CO2 levels under high light conditions in a greenhouse for 30 d. Relative to plants grown at ambient CO2 levels, plants grown under elevated CO2 accumulated ca. 20% more biomass and 23% more leaf area. When measured at the CO2 concentration of growth, mature leaves of high-CO2-grown plants had higher light-saturated rates of photosynthesis (ca. 15%), lower stomatal conductance (71%), higher water-use efficiency (225%) and higher dark respiration rates (100%). High-CO2-grown plants had lower carboxylation efficiencies (23%), measured under limiting CO2, and lower leaf protein contents (22%). Activities of a number of C3 and C4 cycle enzymes decreased on a leaf-area basis in the high-CO2-grown plants by 5–30%, with NADP-malate dehydrogenase exhibiting the greatest decrease. In contrast, activities of fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase and ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase increased significantly under elevated CO2 condition (8% and 36%, respectively). These data show that the C4 plant maize may benefit from elevated CO2 through acclimation in the capacities of certain photosynthetic enzymes. The increased capacity to synthesize sucrose and starch, and to utilize these end-products of photosynthesis to produce extra energy by respiration, may contribute to the enhanced growth of maize under elevated CO2.  The aim of this study was to characterise growth and photosynthetic capacity in plants adapted to long-term contrasting atmospheric CO2 concentrations (C a). Seeds of Agrostis canina L. ssp. monteluccii were collected from a natural CO2 transect in central-western Italy and plants grown in controlled environment chambers at both ambient and elevated CO2 (350 and 700 μmol mol−1) in nutrient-rich soil. Seasonal mean C a at the source of the plant material ranged from 610 to 451 μmol CO2 mol−1, derived from C4 leaf stable carbon isotope discrimination (δ13C). Under chamber conditions, CO2 enrichment stimulated the growth of all populations. However, plants originating from elevated C a exhibited higher initial relative growth rates (RGRs) irrespective of chamber CO2 concentrations and a positive relationship was found between RGR and C a at the seed source. Seed weight was positively correlated with C a, but differences in seed weight were found to explain no more than 34% of the variation in RGRs at elevated CO2. Longer-term experiments (over 98 days) on two populations originating from the extremes of the transect (451 and 610 μmol CO2 mol−1) indicated that differences in growth between populations were maintained when plants were grown at both 350 and 700 μmol CO2 mol−1. Analysis of leaf material revealed an increase in the cell wall fraction (CWF) in plants grown at elevated CO2, with plants originating from high C a exhibiting constitutively lower levels but a variable response in terms of the degree of lignification. In vivo gas exchange measurements revealed no significant differences in light and CO2 saturated rates of photosynthesis and carboxylation efficiency between populations or with CO2 treatment. Moreover, SDS-PAGE/ LISA quantification of leaf ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) showed no difference in Rubisco content between populations or CO2 treatments. These findings suggest that long-term adaptation to growth at elevated CO2 may be associated with a potential for increased growth, but this does not appear to be linked with differences in the intrinsic capacity for photosynthesis. Using a free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment, poplar trees (Populus × euramericana clone I214) were exposed to either ambient or elevated [CO2] from planting, for a 5-year period during canopy development, closure, coppice and re-growth. In each year, measurements were taken of stomatal density (SD, number mm−2) and stomatal index (SI, the proportion of epidermal cells forming stomata). In year 5, measurements were also taken of leaf stomatal conductance (g s, μmol m−2 s−1), photosynthetic CO2 fixation (A, mmol m−2 s−1), instantaneous water-use efficiency (A/E) and the ratio of intercellular to atmospheric CO2 (Ci:Ca). Elevated [CO2] caused reductions in SI in the first year, and in SD in the first 2 years, when the canopy was largely open. In following years, when the canopy had closed, elevated [CO2] had no detectable effects on stomatal numbers or index. In contrast, even after 5 years of exposure to elevated [CO2], g s was reduced, A/E was stimulated, and Ci:Ca was reduced relative to ambient [CO2]. These outcomes from the long-term realistic field conditions of this forest FACE experiment suggest that stomatal numbers (SD and SI) had no role in determining the improved instantaneous leaf-level efficiency of water use under elevated [CO2]. We propose that altered cuticular development during canopy closure may partially explain the changing response of stomata to elevated [CO2], although the mechanism for this remains obscure.  相似文献

Twin Cays (Belize) is a highly oligotrophic mangrove archipelago dominated by Rhizophora mangle L. Ocean‐fringing trees are 3–7 m tall with a leaf area index (LAI) of 2.3, whereas in the interior, dwarf zone, trees are 1.5 m or less, and the LAI is 0.7. P‐fertilization of dwarf trees dramatically increases growth. As a partial explanation of these characteristics, it was hypothesized that differences in stature and growth rates would reflect differences in leaf photosynthetic capacity, as determined by the photochemical and biochemical characteristics at the chloroplast level. Gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence were used to compare photosynthesis of dwarf, fringe and fertilized trees. Regardless of zonation or treatment, net CO2 exchange (A) and photosynthetic electron transport were light saturated at less than 500 µmol photons m?2 s?1, and low‐light quantum efficiencies were typical for healthy C3 plants. On the other hand, light‐saturated A was linearly related to stomatal conductance (gs), with seasonal, zonal and treatment differences in photosynthesis corresponding linearly to differences in the mean gs. Overall, photosynthetic capacity appeared to be co‐regulated with stomatal conductance, minimizing the variability of Ci at ambient CO2 (and hence, Ci/Ca). Based on the results of in vitro assays, regulation of photosynthesis in R. mangle appeared to be accomplished, at least in part, by regulation of Rubisco activity.  相似文献

Standing dead and green foliage litter was collected in early November 1990 from Andropogon gerardii (C4), Sorghastrum nutans (C4), and Poa pratensis (C3) plants that were grown in large open-top chambers under ambient or twice ambient CO2 and with or without nitrogen fertilization (45 kg N ha−1). The litter was placed in mesh bags on the soil surface of pristine prairie adjacent to the growth treatment plots and allowed to decay under natural conditions. Litter bags were retrieved at fixed intervals and litter was analyzed for mass loss, carbon chemistry, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen and phosphorus. The results indicate that growth treatments had a relatively minor effect on the initial chemical composition of the litter and its subsequent rate of decay or chemical composition. This suggests that a large indirect effect of CO2 on surface litter decomposition in the tallgrass prairie would not occur by way of changes in chemistry of leaf litter. However, there was a large difference in characteristics of leaf litter decomposition among the species. Poa leaf litter had a different initial chemistry and decayed more rapidly than C4 grasses. We conclude that an indirect effect of CO2 on decomposition and nutrient cycling could occur if CO2 induces changes in the relative aboveground biomass of the prairie species.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N) of ear and flag leaf during grain filling stage and grain yield of plants with non-darkened or darkened flag leaf or darkened ear were examined in two different CO2 concentrations: ambient (AC) and AC+200 μmol mol−1 (EC). Ear showed much higher enhancement (56 %) of P N than flag leaf (23 %) under EC. Moreover, CO2 enrichment shortened the photosynthetic duration of flag leaf relative to ear. In this way the ratio of ear to flag leaf contribution to grain yield increased from 1.18 (AC) to 1.39 (EC).  相似文献
