We examined the relationship between thermal tolerance, measured as critical thermal maximum (CT(max)), and aspects of the heat-shock response in tidepool sculpins (Oligocottus maculosus) acclimated to constant laboratory temperatures or acclimatized to field conditions. The CT(max) of fish laboratory acclimated to 6°, 13°, and 20°C were 27.6° ± 0.1°C, 29.5° ± 0.1°C, and 30.8° ± 0.1°C, respectively, increasing linearly by 0.2°C for each 1°C increase in acclimation temperature. The CT(max) of field-acclimatized fish from the low intertidal (29.9° ± 0.1°C) was significantly lower than that of fish from the mid- (30.5° ± 0.1°C) and high (30.4° ± 0.1°C) intertidal. CT(max) and the onset temperature of hsp70 induction in gill (T(on)) were highly correlated in both laboratory-acclimated and field-acclimatized sculpins, with T(on) occurring at 2°C below CT(max) in all cases. However, there was no consistent relationship between CT(max) and the maximum levels of gill hsp70 mRNA. Predicted "acclimation" temperature (15.9° ± 0.3°C) and mean habitat temperature (15.9° ± 1.6°C) were similar for sculpins from low intertidal pools, but this relationship was not apparent in mid- and high intertidal fish. Mark-recapture experiments indicated that approximately 80% of fish from low intertidal pools were residents of that pool, but residency rates were less than 50% in mid- and high intertidal pools, which may explain the lack of correlation between CT(max) and habitat variables in these groups. These data indicate that gill hsp70 T(on) and CT(max) are highly correlated indicators of the thermal performance of tidepool sculpins in both laboratory and field settings.  相似文献

To quantify the tolerance of summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus to episodic hypoxia, resting metabolic rate, oxygen extraction, gill ventilation and heart rate were measured during acute progressive hypoxia at the fish's acclimation temperature (22° C) and after an acute temperature increase (to 30° C). Mean ±s.e. critical oxygen levels (i.e. the oxygen levels below which fish could not maintain aerobic metabolism) increased significantly from 27 ± 2% saturation (2·0 ± 0·1 mg O(2) l(-1) ) at 22° C to 39 ± 2% saturation (2·4 ± 0·1 mg O(2) l(-1) ) at 30° C. Gill ventilation and oxygen extraction changed immediately with the onset of hypoxia at both temperatures. The fractional increase in gill ventilation (from normoxia to the lowest oxygen level tested) was much larger at 22° C (6·4-fold) than at 30° C (2·7-fold). In contrast, the fractional decrease in oxygen extraction (from normoxia to the lowest oxygen levels tested) was similar at 22° C (1·7-fold) and 30° C (1·5-fold), and clearly smaller than the fractional changes in gill ventilation. In contrast to the almost immediate effects of hypoxia on respiration, bradycardia was not observed until 20 and 30% oxygen saturation at 22 and 30° C, respectively. Bradycardia was, therefore, not observed until below critical oxygen levels. The critical oxygen levels at both temperatures were near or immediately below the accepted 2·3 mg O(2) l(-1) hypoxia threshold for survival, but the increase in the critical oxygen level at 30° C suggests a lower tolerance to hypoxia after an acute increase in temperature.  相似文献

The independent influence of peak oxygen uptake (Vo(? peak)) on changes in thermoregulatory responses during exercise in a neutral climate has not been previously isolated because of complex interactions between Vo(? peak), metabolic heat production (H(prod)), body mass, and body surface area (BSA). It was hypothesized that Vo(? peak) does not independently alter changes in core temperature and sweating during exercise. Fourteen males, 7 high (HI) Vo(? peak): 60.1 ± 4.5 ml·kg?1·min?1; 7 low (LO) Vo(? peak): 40.3 ± 2.9 ml·kg?1·min?1 matched for body mass (HI: 78.2 ± 6.1 kg; LO: 78.7 ± 7.1 kg) and BSA (HI: 1.97 ± 0.08 m2; LO: 1.94 ± 0.08 m2), cycled for 60-min at 1) a fixed heat production (FHP trial) and 2) a relative exercise intensity of 60% Vo(? peak) (REL trial) at 24.8 ± 0.6°C, 26 ± 10% RH. In the FHP trial, H(prod) was similar between the HI (542 ± 38 W, 7.0 ± 0.6 W/kg or 275 ± 25 W/m2) and LO (535 ± 39 W, 6.9 ± 0.9 W/kg or 277 ± 29 W/m2) groups, while changes in rectal (T(re): HI: 0.87 ± 0.15°C, LO: 0.87 ± 0.18°C, P = 1.00) and aural canal (T(au): HI: 0.70 ± 0.12°C, LO: 0.74 ± 0.21°C, P = 0.65) temperature, whole-body sweat loss (WBSL) (HI: 434 ± 80 ml, LO: 440 ± 41 ml; P = 0.86), and steady-state local sweating (LSR(back)) (P = 0.40) were all similar despite relative exercise intensity being different (HI: 39.7 ± 4.2%, LO: 57.6 ± 8.0% Vo(2 peak); P = 0.001). At 60% Vo(2 peak), H(prod) was greater in the HI (834 ± 77 W, 10.7 ± 1.3 W/kg or 423 ± 44 W/m2) compared with LO (600 ± 90 W, 7.7 ± 1.4 W/kg or 310 ± 50 W/m2) group (all P < 0.001), as were changes in T(re) (HI: 1.43 ± 0.28°C, LO: 0.89 ± 0.19°C; P = 0.001) and T(au) (HI: 1.11 ± 0.21°C, LO: 0.66 ± 0.14°C; P < 0.001), and WBSL between 0 and 15, 15 and 30, 30 and 45, and 45 and 60 min (all P < 0.01), and LSR(back) (P = 0.02). The absolute esophageal temperature (T(es)) onset for sudomotor activity was ~0.3°C lower (P < 0.05) in the HI group, but the change in T(es) from preexercise values before sweating onset was similar between groups. Sudomotor thermosensitivity during exercise were similar in both FHP (P = 0.22) and REL (P = 0.77) trials. In conclusion, changes in core temperature and sweating during exercise in a neutral climate are determined by H(prod), mass, and BSA, not Vo(? peak).  相似文献

In this work, the temperature dependence of the sarco-endoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) -ATPase (SERCA2) activity from rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss cardiac ventricles was measured and compared with the mammalian SERCA2 isoform. The rate of ATP-dependent Ca(2+) transport catalysed by O. mykiss vesicles was totally abolished by thapsigargin and the Ca(2+) ionophore A(23187) . At warm temperatures (25 and 30° C), the SERCA2 from O. mykiss ventricles displayed the same rate of Ca(2+) uptake. At 35° C, the activity of the O. mykiss enzyme decreased after 20 min of reaction time. The rate of Ca(2+) uptake catalysed by the mammalian SERCA2 was temperature dependent exhibiting its maximal activity at 35° C. In contrast to the rate of Ca(2+) uptake, the rate of ATP hydrolysis catalysed by O. mykiss SERCA2 was not significantly different at 25 and 35° C, but the rate of ATP hydrolysis catalysed by the rat Rattus norvegicus SERCA2 isoform at 35° C was two-fold higher than at 25° C. At low temperatures (5 to 20° C), the rate of Ca(2+) uptake from O. mykiss SR was less temperature dependent than the R. norvegicus isoform, being able to sustain a high activity even at 5° C. The mean ±s.e. Q(10) values calculated from 25 to 35° C for ATP hydrolysis were 1·112 ± 0·026 (n = 3) and 2·759 ± 0·240 (n = 5) for O. mykiss and R. norvegicus, respectively. Taken together, the results show that the O. mykiss SERCA2 was not temperature dependent over the 10 to 25° C temperature interval commonly experienced by the animal in vivo. The Q(10) value of SERCA2 was significantly lower in O. mykiss than R. norvegicus which may be key for cardiac function over the wide environmental temperatures experienced in this eurythermal fish.  相似文献

Loss of aerobic scope at high and low temperatures is a physiological mechanism proposed to limit the thermal performance and tolerance of organisms, a theory known as oxygen- and capacity-limited thermal tolerance (OCLTT). Eurythermal organisms maintain aerobic scope over wide ranges of temperatures, but it is unknown whether acclimation is necessary to maintain this breadth. The objective of this study was to examine changes in aerobic scope in Fundulus heteroclitus, a eurythermal fish, after acclimation and acute exposure to temperatures from 5° to 33°C. The range of temperatures over which aerobic scope was nonzero was similar in acclimated and acutely exposed fish, suggesting that acclimation has modest effects on the thermal breadth of aerobic scope. However, in acclimated fish, there was a clear optimum temperature range for aerobic scope between 25° and 30°C, whereas aerobic scope was relatively constant across the entire temperature range with acute temperature exposure. Therefore, the primary effect of acclimation was to increase aerobic scope between 25° and 30°C, which paradoxically resulted in a narrower temperature range of optimal performance in acclimated fish compared to acutely exposed fish. There was only weak evidence for correlations between the thermal optimum of aerobic scope and the thermal optimum of measures of performance (specific growth rate and gonadosomatic index), and indicators of anaerobic metabolism (lactate accumulation and lactate dehydrogenase activity) only increased at high temperatures. Together these data fit many, but not all, of the predictions made by OCLTT.  相似文献

The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of wheat β-amylase (WBA) were characterized and various additives were evaluated for enhancing its activity and thermostability. WBA activity was examined by neocuproine method using soluble starch as substrate. The Michaelis constant (K(m)) and molecular activity (k(cat)) were determined to be 1.0±0.1% (w/v) and 94±3s(-1), respectively, at pH 5.4 and at 25°C. The optimum reaction temperature (T(opt)) for WBA activity was 55°C and the temperature (T(50)) at which it loses half of the activity after 30-min incubation was 50±1°C. Modifications of the solvent with 182mM glycine and 0.18% (w/v) gelatin have increased the T(50) by 5°C. Glycerol, ethylene glycol, dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide have also slightly enhanced the thermostability plausibly through weakening the water structure and decreasing the water shell around the WBA protein. Ethanol and DMF activated WBA by up to 24% at 25°C probably by inducing favorable conformation for the active site or changing the substrate structure by weakening the hydrogen bonding. Its half-life in the inactivation at 55°C was improved from 23 to 48min by 182mM glycine. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that WBA is thermo-labile and sufficient stabilization was achieved through solvent modification with additives and that the heat inactivation of WBA is entropic-driven. It is suggested that WBA could be applied more widely in starch-saccharification industries with employing suitable additives.  相似文献

Surface electromyography (EMG) can assess muscle recruitment patterns during cycling, but has limited applicability to studies of deep muscle recruitment and electrically stimulated contractions. We determined whether muscle recruitment timing could be inferred from MRI-measured transverse relaxation time constant (T(2)) changes and a cycle ergometer modified to vary power as a function of pedal angle. Six subjects performed 6 min of single-leg cycling under two conditions (E0°-230° and E90°-230°), which increased the power from 0°-230° and 90-230° of the pedal cycle, respectively. The difference condition produced a virtual power output from 0-180° (V0°-180°). Recruitment was assessed by integrating EMG over the pedal cycle (IEMG) and as the (post-pre) exercise T(2) change (ΔT(2)). For E0°-230°, the mean IEMG for vastus medialis and lateralis (VM/VL; 49.3 ± 3.9 mV·s; mean ± SE) was greater (P < 0.05) than that for E90°-230° (17.9 ± 1.9 mV·s); the corresponding ΔT(2) values were 8.7 ± 1.0 and 1.4 ± 0.5 ms (P < 0.05). For E0°-230° and E90°-230°, the IEMG values for biceps femoris/long head (BF(L)) were 37.7 ± 5.4 and 27.1 ± 5.6 mV·s (P > 0.05); the corresponding ΔT(2) values were 0.9 ± 0.9 and 1.5 ± 0.9 ms (P > 0.05). MRI data indicated activation of the semitendinosus and BF/short head for E0°-230° and E90°-230°. For V0°-180°, ΔT(2) was 7.2 ± 0.9 ms for VM/VL and -0.6 ± 0.6 ms for BF(L); IEMG was 31.5 ± 3.7 mV·s for VM/VL and 10.6 ± 7.0 mV·s for BF(L). MRI and EMG data indicate VM/VL activity from 0 to 180° and selected hamstring activity from 90 to 230°. Combining ΔT(2) measurements with variable loading allows the spatial and temporal patterns of recruitment during cycling to be inferred from MRI data.  相似文献

The majority of information concerning the cardio-metabolic performance of varanids during exercise is limited to a few species at their preferred body temperature (T(b)) even though, being ectotherms, varanids naturally experience rather large changes in T(b). Although it is well established that absolute aerobic scope declines with decreasing T(b), it is not known whether changes in cardiac output (V(b)) and/or tissue oxygen extraction, (Ca(O2) - Cv(O2)), are in proportion to the rate of oxygen consumption (Vo(2)). To test this, we studied six Rosenberg's goannas (Varanus rosenbergi) while at rest and while maximally exercising on a treadmill both at 25 and 36 degrees C. During maximum exercise both at 25 and 36 degrees C, mass-specific rate of oxygen consumption (Vo(2kg)) increased with an absolute scope of 8.5 ml min(-1) kg(-1) and 15.7 ml min(-1) kg(-1), respectively. Interestingly, the factorial aerobic scope was temperature-independent and remained at 7.0 which, at each T(b), was primarily the result of an increase in V(bkg), governed by approximate twofold increases both in heart rate (f(H)) and cardiac stroke volume (V(Skg)). Both at 25 degrees C and 36 degrees C, the increase in V(bkg) alone was not sufficient to provide all of the additional oxygen required to attain maximal Vo(2kg), as indicated by a decrease in the blood convection requirement V(bkg)/Vo(2kg); hence, there was a compensatory twofold increase in (Ca(O2) - Cv(O2)). Although associated with an increase in hemoglobin-oxygen affinity, a decrease in T(b) did not impair unloading of oxygen at the tissues and act to reduce (Ca(O2) - Cv(O2)); both Ca(O2)) and Cv(O2)) were maintained across T(b). The change in Vo(2kg) with T(b), therefore, is solely reliant on the thermal dependence of V(bkg). Maintaining a high factorial aerobic scope across a range of T(b) confers an advantage in that cooler animals can achieve higher absolute aerobic scopes and presumably improved aerobic performance than would otherwise be achievable.  相似文献

We investigated the validity of employing a fuzzy piecewise prediction equation (PW) [Gonzalez et al. J Appl Physiol 107: 379-388, 2009] defined by sweat rate (m(sw), g·m(-2)·h(-1)) = 147 + 1.527·(E(req)) - 0.87·(E(max)), which integrates evaporation required (E(req)) and the maximum evaporative capacity of the environment (E(max)). Heat exchange and physiological responses were determined throughout the trials. Environmental conditions were ambient temperature (T(a)) = 16-26°C, relative humidity (RH) = 51-55%, and wind speed (V) = 0.5-1.5 m/s. Volunteers wore military fatigues [clothing evaporative potential (i(m)/clo) = 0.33] and carried loads (15-31 kg) while marching 14-37 km over variable terrains either at night (N = 77, trials 1-5) or night with increasing daylight (N = 33, trials 6 and 7). PW was modified (Pw,sol) for transient solar radiation (R(sol), W) determined from measured solar loads and verified in trials 6 and 7. PW provided a valid m(sw) prediction during night trials (1-5) matching previous laboratory values and verified by bootstrap correlation (r(bs) of 0.81, SE ± 0.014, SEE = ± 69.2 g·m(-2)·h(-1)). For trials 6 and 7, E(req) and E(max) components included R(sol) applying a modified equation Pw,sol, in which m(sw) = 147 + 1.527·(E(req,sol)) - 0.87·(E(max)). Linear prediction of m(sw) = 0.72·Pw,sol + 135 (N = 33) was validated (R(2) = 0.92; SEE = ±33.8 g·m(-2)·h(-1)) with PW β-coefficients unaltered during field marches between 16°C and 26°C T(a) for m(sw) ≤ 700 g·m(-2)·h(-1). PW was additionally derived for cool laboratory/night conditions (T(a) < 20°C) in which E(req) is low but E(max) is high, as: PW,cool (g·m(-2)·h(-1)) = 350 + 1.527·E(req) - 0.87·E(max). These sweat prediction equations allow valid tools for civilian, sports, and military medicine communities to predict water needs during a variety of heat stress/exercise conditions.  相似文献

Seawater-acclimated eurythermic mummichogs (Fundulus heteroclitus L.) were acclimated to cold and warm conditions (5 and 20 °C, 4 weeks). Opercular epithelia (OE) from 20 °C-acclimated animals, containing numerous mitochondrion-rich chloride cells were mounted in Ussing-style membrane chambers, cooled to 16, 13, 10, 5 and 2.5 °C, then subjected to hypotonic shock that normally inhibits Cl(-) secretion (as short-circuit current, I(sc)). Cold exposure to 10 °C slowed Cl(-) secretion (Q(10)=1.62 ± 0.204 95% CI) and OEs responded rapidly and reversibly to hypotonic shock, but below 8.0 °C a sharp decrease (Q(10)=5.63 ± 0.736) occurred and the tissue was unresponsive to hypotonicity. By immunocytochemistry, Focal Adhesion Kinase (FAK) phosphorylated at tyrosine-407 (pY(407)) colocalized with CFTR in apical membrane and dephosphorylated with hypotonic shock at 20 °C but failed to dephosphorylate at 5 °C, while opercular epithelia from cold-acclimated fish at 5 and 20 °C responded normally to hypotonic shock. Cold-shock of warm-acclimated OEs also stimulated covering over of mitochondrion- rich cell apical crypts, detected by SEM. Cold-acclimation increased C18:1 and decreased C18:0 fatty acids in liver, indicating homeoviscous adaptation. Eurythermic fish acclimate osmoregulatory systems to cold by maintaining membrane fluidity and preserving complex transport regulation pathways.  相似文献

We investigated whether a core temperature threshold for hyperthermic hyperventilation is seen during prolonged submaximal exercise in the heat when core temperature before the exercise is reduced and whether the evoked hyperventilatory response is affected by altering the initial core temperature. Ten male subjects performed three exercise trials at 50% of peak oxygen uptake in the heat (37°C and 50% relative humidity) after altering their initial esophageal temperature (T(es)). Initial T(es) was manipulated by immersion for 25 min in water at 18°C (Precooling), 35°C (Control), or 40°C (Preheating). T(es) after the water immersion was significantly higher in the Preheating trial (37.5 ± 0.3°C) and lower in the Precooling trial (36.1 ± 0.3°C) than in the Control trial (36.9 ± 0.3°C). In the Precooling trial, minute ventilation (Ve) showed little change until T(es) reached 37.1 ± 0.4°C. Above this core temperature threshold, Ve increased linearly in proportion to increasing T(es). In the Control trial, Ve increased as T(es) increased from 37.0°C to 38.6°C after the onset of exercise. In the Preheating trial, Ve increased from the initially elevated levels of T(es) (from 37.6 to 38.6°C) and Ve. The sensitivity of Ve to increasing T(es) above the threshold for hyperventilation (the slope of the T(es)-Ve relation) did not significantly vary across trials (Precooling trial = 10.6 ± 5.9, Control trial = 8.7 ± 5.1, and Preheating trial = 9.2 ± 6.9 L·min(-1)·°C(-1)). These results suggest that during prolonged submaximal exercise at a constant workload in humans, there is a clear core temperature threshold for hyperthermic hyperventilation and that the evoked hyperventilatory response is unaffected by altering initial core temperature.  相似文献

Developmental times and survivorship of tarnished plant bug nymphs, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), and longevity and reproduction of adult tarnished plant bug adults reared on green beans were studied at multiple constant temperatures. The developmental time for each life stage and the total time from egg to adult decreased with increasing temperature. Eggs required the longest time to develop followed by fifth instars and then first-instars. Total developmental time from egg to adult was shortest at 32°C, requiring 18.0 ± 0.3 d and 416.7 ± 31.3 DD above 7.9°C, the estimated minimum temperature for development from egg to adult. Sex did not affect total developmental times and did not affect median survival time. Adults lived significantly fewer days at high temperatures (30-32°C: 17-19 d) compared with temperatures below 30°C (range: 24.5-39.4 d) and the number of eggs laid per day increased from ≈ 4 at 18°C to a maximum of 9.5 eggs per day at 30°C. Total egg production over the lifetime of female tarnished plant bugs increased with temperature reaching a maximum of 175 eggs on average at 27°C, total egg production declined at temperatures above 27°C (30°C: 110.8, 32°C: 77.3 eggs per female). The highest net reproductive rate 74.5 (R(0)) was obtained from insects maintained at 27°C. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r(m)) increased linearly with temperature to a maximum value of 0.1852 at 30°C, and then decreased at 32°C. Generation and doubling times of the population were shortest at 30°C, 21.0 and 3.7 d, respectively.  相似文献

Nearest-neighbor thermodynamic (NNT) models currently provide some of the most accurate predictions of melting thermodynamics, including melting temperature (T(m)) values, for short DNA duplexes. Inherent to all existing NNT models is the assumption that ΔH° and ΔS° for the helix-to-coil transition are temperature invariant. Here we investigate the impact that this zero-ΔC(p) assumption has on the accuracy of T(m) predictions for 128 DNA duplexes. Previous and new melting thermodynamic data are analyzed to establish an estimate of ΔC(p)(bp), the heat capacity change per base pair, of 42 ± 16 cal mol(-1) K(-1) bp(-1), as well as an optimal thermodynamic reference temperature (T(ref)) of 53 ± 5 °C. These results were used to modify the unified NNT model to properly account for the temperature dependence of ΔH° and ΔS° and thereby extend the range over which T(m) is accurately predicted. This new approach is shown to be especially useful for duplexes that melt at a T(m) greater than 70 °C. Thermodynamic data collected by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for 16 duplexes designed to melt over a broad temperature range were used to verify the values of ΔC(p)(bp) and T(ref) and to show that ΔC(p)(bp) is essentially constant above 37 °C. Additional DSC analysis of 12 duplex sequences containing all 10 nearest neighbors allowed for errors associated with different terminal nearest neighbors to be examined and showed that duplexes containing one or more terminal 5'-TA groups are significantly more stable than predicted by the unified NNT model. A correction to improve prediction of the hybridization thermodynamics of duplexes with terminal 5'-TA groups is provided.

The effects of body mass (M) and temperature (T) on routine metabolic rate (m(R) ) were assessed in the largemouth bronze gudgeon Coreius guichenoti, from Three Gorges Reservoir, Yangtze River, China. The m(R) increased with increasing M by factors (b-value in the equation m(R) = aM(b) ) of 0·843, 0·800, 0·767, 0·788 and 0·822 at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30° C, respectively. A significant interaction between M and T on m(R) was observed. The variation in the b-value at different T suggests that the b-values were not consistent with the universal allometric exponent 0·75. After controlling for M, the relationship between the normalized standard metabolic rate (m(S), mg O(2) kg(-1) h(-1)) and T was described by an exponential equation: m(S) = 9·89e((0·093T)) . The results indicate that the effects of M on m(R) depend on T. The increased water temperature induced by dam construction on the Yangtze River may cause a marked increase in energy demand by this species, with potential ecological consequences.  相似文献

Although many tropical and subtropical areas experience pronounced seasonal changes in weather and food availability, few studies have examined and none have compared the thermal physiology and energetics of a hibernating mammal that is restricted to these regions. We quantified thermal energetics of northern long-eared bats (Nyctophilus bifax; body mass ~10 g) during summer, winter, and spring from a subtropical habitat, and also during winter from a tropical habitat, to determine how N. bifax cope with climate and seasonal changes in weather. We captured bats in the wild and measured metabolic rates via open-flow respirometry. The basal metabolic rate of subtropical bats at an ambient temperature (T(a)) of 32.6 ± 0.7°C was 1.28 ± 0.06 ml O(2)·g(-1)·h(-1) during both summer and winter, similar to other species of Nyctophilus. Resting metabolic rates below the thermoneutral zone increased similarly with decreasing T(a) during all seasons and in both regions. All individuals showed a high proclivity to enter torpor at T(a) values below the thermoneutral zone. Metabolic rates in torpid thermoconforming bats fell with T(a) and body temperature, and mean minimum metabolic rates during torpor were similar during all seasons and in both regions and as predicted from body mass in temperate zone hibernators. At very low T(a), torpid N. bifax thermoregulated, and this threshold T(a) differed significantly between subtropical (T(a) = 3.5 ± 0.3°C) and tropical (T(a) = 6.7 ± 0.7°C) individuals, but not between seasons. Our data show that thermal energetics of N. bifax do not vary seasonally and in many aspects are similar in tropical and subtropical bats; however, torpid individuals from the subtropics allow body temperature to fall to significantly lower values than those from the tropics.  相似文献

Two climate chamber experiments were performed to simulate the effects of global warming on life table parameters of coccinellids. We investigated the effects of two daily temperature profiles during preimaginal development (larval and pupal) and the young adult period (first 10 d) on body weight and fat body content of adult Coccinella septempunctata L. and Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) fed English grain aphids [Sitobion avenae (F.)] ad libitum: 1) normal, i.e., current daily temperatures in central Europe (T0: mean, 17.8°C; maximum, 21.8°C; minimum, 13.4°C) and 2) increased by 3K (T3: mean, 20.8°C; maximum, 25.5°C; minimum, 15.7°C). The first experiment was performed at the same temperatures (T0 or T3) during both periods to establish the responses of the two species to temperature. The second was conducted to identify the period (preimaginal or adult) in which the responses occurred and to confirm the results of the first experiment. Compared with normal temperatures (T0), elevated temperatures (T3) resulted in significant decreases in preimaginal development time and increases in aphid consumption rates in both species. C. septempunctata (10-d-old adults) had the highest weights when reared at T3, H. axyridis at T0. C. septempunctata was significantly heavier than H. axyridis in most cases, particularly in females. The body fat content of C. septempunctata was higher than that of H. axyridis at T0 and T3 temperatures. At T3 temperatures, fat accumulation in C. septempunctata increased, whereas that in H. axyridis remained relatively low. Body weight and fat body content of 10-d-old adults of both species seemed to be determined by temperature conditions during preimaginal development.  相似文献

Fish may be anesthetized for various experimental and practical purposes, primarily to immobilize them in order to facilitate handling. Marine medaka (Oryzias dancena) is a teleost fish used in marine ecotoxicology studies. Despite the importance of anesthesia in handling experimental fish, the effects of anesthesia in marine medaka have not yet been investigated. In this study, the authors evaluated the anesthetic effects (time required for anesthesia to take effect and recovery time) of two anesthetic agents, clove oil and lidocaine-HCl, on marine medaka. They anesthetized fish at different water temperatures (23 °C, 26 °C and 29 °C) and using different concentrations of clove oil (50 ppm, 75 ppm, 100 ppm, 125 ppm, 150 ppm and 175 ppm) or lidocaine-HCl (300 ppm, 400 ppm, 500 ppm, 600 ppm, 700 ppm and 800 ppm). The time required for anesthesia to take effect decreased significantly as both anesthetic concentration and water temperature increased for both clove oil and lidocaine-HCl. To anesthetize marine medaka within approximately 1 min, the optimal concentrations for clove oil were 125 ppm at 23 °C, 100 ppm at 26 °C and 75 ppm at 29 °C and for lidocaine-HCl were 800 ppm at 23 °C and 700 ppm at both 26 °C and 29 °C. The authors also compared anesthetic effects in marine medaka of different sizes. Both anesthetic exposure time and recovery time were significantly shorter for smaller fish than for larger fish. These results provide a useful foundation for the laboratory handling of marine medaka.  相似文献
