Sexual dimorphism inSebastes
Synopsis Sexual dimorphism and factors that may cause it were investigated in 34 species of the genusSebastes. Sexual dimorphism in standard length and morphometric characters are fairly common in rockfish. In many species males are shorter than females. However in males head length, width of orbit, interorbital width, length of upper jaw, longest pectoral fin ray and longest dorsal spine tend to be larger at a specified size than in females. Water-column species tend to be more dimorphic than demersal species. We suggest that the observed differences in dimorphism in standard length may be related to differences in mating and territorial behavior. Dimorphisms in morphometric measurements may be related to compensation in feeding ability for reduced standard length of males, mating and territorial behavior.

Sexual and male horn dimorphism in Copris ochus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)
Copris ochus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), an endangered species, is the largest dung beetle in Japan. In C. ochus, males have a long head horn, while females lack this long horn (sexual dimorphism). Very large males of C. ochus have disproportionately longer head horns than small males, suggesting male horn dimorphism, although the dimorphism has not been investigated quantitatively. To clarify sexual and male horn dimorphism in C. ochus quantitatively, we examined the scaling relationship between body size (prothorax width) and head horn length in 94 females and 76 males. These beetles were captured during July 1978 from a natural population on Mt. Aso in southwestern Japan using a light trap. Although the horn length of the females and males scaled with prothorax width, the scaling relationship differed between the sexes, i.e., the relationship was linear in females and nonlinear in males. Statistical tests for dimorphism in male horn length showed a significant discontinuous relationship, thus indicating distinct sexual and male dimorphism in head horns. Long- and short-horned C. ochus males may have different reproductive behaviors, as described in other horned dung beetles.

Skulls of 69 bottlenose dolphins (genus Tursiops ) from the Indian/Banana River on the east coast of Florida were examined for evidence of sexual dimorphism. The only sexual dimorphism shown by t -tests on 28 morphological and four meristic skull characters was that males have, on average, more teeth than females in all four arcades. Results of covariance analysis, employed to account for variation in size, indicate minor dimorphism in parietal width of the skull. Twenty body measurements of 29 Tursiops originating in the same area were also analysed for differences between males and females. Statistical results indicate the possibility of sexual dimorphism in the length from the snout to the umbilicus and in flipper width. No evidence was found for differences in overall skull or body length between the sexes.

Phrynocephalus guinanensis has sexual dimorphism in abdominal coloration, but its ontogenetic development of sexual size dimorphism(SSD) is unknown. Using mark-recapture data during four days each year from August from 2014 to 2016, we investigated the development of sex ratios, SSD, sex-specific survivorship and growth rates in a population of P. guinanensis. Our results indicated that the sex ratio of males to females was 1:2.8. Males had a lower survival rate(6%) than females(14%) across the age range from hatchling to adult, which supported the discovered female-biased sex ratio potentially associated with the low survival rate of males between hatchlings and juveniles. Male-biased SSD in tail length and head width existed in adults rather than in hatchling or juvenile lizards. The growth rates in body dimensions were undistinguishable between the sexes during the age from hatchling to juvenile, but the growth rate in head length from juvenile to adult was significantly larger in males than females. Average growth rate of all morphological measurements from hatchling to juvenile were larger compared with corresponding measurements from juvenile to adult, but only being significant in tail length, head width, abdomen length in females and snout-vent length in males. We provided a case study to strengthen our understanding of the important life history traits on how a viviparous lizard population can survive and develop their morphology in cold climates.

Sexual dimorphism in size, shape, and mass relative to length, and sex ratios are quantified for populations of Hyphydrus ovatus. a dytiscid beetle Males of H ovatus are not only longer than females, but also significantly larger in elytron length, thorax width, head width, leg length, total width, total depth, and abdominal segment length Two local populations differ slightly but significantly in total depth and abdominal segment length, but sexual dimorphism in size is similar for the two populations Hyphydrus ovatus are also sexually dimorphic in shape, with males having relatively broader heads and thoraxes than females The two populations differed slightly but significantly in relative abdominal segment length, but as with size, sexual dimorphism in shape is similar for the two populations Males are relatively heavier than females, although the slope of the log mass vs log length relationship is the same for the two sexes Sex ratios in field samples vary significantly over the summer, with percent females declining from c 50% to c 15% Sex ratios are significantly below 50% females m two of five monthly samples and in the total pooled set of samples Sexual dimorphism in size, shape, and relative mass, combined with male-biased sex ratios suggest that larger size of male H ovatus is a product of sexual selection

A detailed analysis of allometric variation and sexual dimorphism in Lycodes yamatoi (Perciformes: Zoarcidae) was carried out using an original method developed by the authors. An allometric pattern of growth was revealed not only in plastic but in some meristic characters, such as the number of teeth on the bones of the mouthparts and the number of gill rakers on the first gill arc. It was determined that most of the morphological characters of L. yamatoi were subjected to positive allometric variability (the proportions of the head and the anterior part of the body), while growth of the remaining characters was specified by negative allometry (the length of the rays of pair and caudal fins, interorbital distance, and isthmus width) and isometry (the standard length, ante-anal distance, and head width on the vertical neck). The juveniles of L. yamatoi have no significant sexual distinctions either in plastic or in meristic characters. Adult females and males of L. yamatoi significantly differed by characters composing the head complex, the actual length of the head, and correlatively related with it ante-dorsal and ante-pectoral distances. The dimensional indexes of antedorsal and ante-pectoral distances, and the relative sizes of maxillary bones (lmx/c) are of the greatest diagnostic value for sex differentiation.

We examined sexual size dimorphism of the rock-dwelling lizard Darevskia raddei (Boettger, 1892) with the help of 30 specimens that were provided from various sources. Eleven metric and seven meristic features were examined. Seven characters (gulars, length of basal tail, femoral pores, length of head, width of head, length of fore limb and length of hind limb) were identified as dimorphic between the two sexes. Some of these characters have important roles in copulation for males, especially the hind limb and the tail base. The number of femoral pores is important in the release of signal components because females release these components to attract males during the mating season. The length of the hind limb as locomotor performance plays an important role during mating, so that the male can grasp the female and adopt the correct position during copulation.

A revision of fish specimens previously identified as Heptapterus mustelinus from the endorheic Río Salí Basin, Tucumán, Argentina, reveals that they present several morphological differences from that species. This paper describes Heptapterus qenqo sp. nov. from the Río Salí Basin. The new species is diagnosed by a combination of the following characters: presence of small serrae on the anterior proximal margin of the first pectoral-fin ray; anal-fin rays iv-v, 11-13 (15-17 total anal-fin rays); adipose-fin base 40·9-47·4% standard length; small eyes (7·4-14·2% head length); adipose-fin confluent to caudal fin and maxillary barbel not reaching pectoral-fin base in adults, and reaching or scarcely surpassing the first pectoral-fin ray in small juveniles.

Few studies have conducted morphological analyses of crocodilians, and little information exists on differences between size-classes and sexes in Neotropical crocodilians. In this study, we measured nine morphological traits in 121 captive Morelet's crocodiles Crocodylus moreletii (81 females and 40 males). Our results revealed that individuals < 2 m total length do not exhibit sexual dimorphism in morphometric characteristics. However, for crocodiles over 2 m in length, males were significantly larger than females in terms of dorsal-cranial length, cranial width, snout width and snout-ventral length. In general, morphological traits demonstrated a strongly significant relationship with total length at the smaller size class of 150-200 cm length. However, in the highest size class of 250-300 cm length (large adult males), morphological traits were no longer significantly related with total length. Male crocodiles demonstrated allometric growth of cranial morphology with significantly greater increase in cranial width, snout width, and mid-snout width relative to total length at higher size classes. Morphological dimorphism and allometric growth may be associated with adaptive strategies for reproductive success.

Sexual dimorphism of phenotypic traits associated with resource use is common in animals, and may result from niche divergence between sexes. Snakes have become widely used in studies of the ecological basis of sexual dimorphism because they are gape‐limited predators and their head morphology is likely to be a direct indicator of the size and shape of prey consumed. We examined sexual dimorphism of body size and head morphology, as well as sexual differences in diet, in a population of Mexican lance‐headed rattlesnakes, Crotalus polystictus, from the State of México, Mexico. The maximum snout–vent length of males was greater than that of females by 21%. Males had relatively larger heads, and differed from females in head shape after removing the effects of head size. In addition, male rattlesnakes showed positive allometry in head shape: head width was amplified, whereas snout length was truncated with increased head size. By contrast, our data did not provide clear evidence of allometry in head shape of females. Adults of both males and females ate predominately mice and voles; however, males also consumed a greater proportion of larger mammalian species, and fewer small prey species. The differences in diet correspond with dimorphism in head morphology, and provide evidence of intersexual niche divergence in the study population. However, because the sexes overlapped greatly in diet, we hypothesize that diet and head dimorphisms in C. polystictus are likely related to different selection pressures in each sex arising from pre‐existing body size differences rather than from character displacement for reducing intersexual competition. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 633–640.

最大的成年雄体和雌体分别为70.2mmSVL(snout-vent length)和82.8mmSVL。

Size and scaling of sexually-selected traits in the lizard, Uta palmeri
Differences between the sexes in overall body size and in the size of other morphological traits, relative to overall body size, are common in many animals. In this study, patterns of growth and scaling of sexually dimorphic tratis are assessedin a lilzard and then used to sugest general developmental mechanisms responsible for sexual size dimorphism (SSD). Adult make Uta palmeri lizards are larger than adult females inoverall body size (snout-vent length, SVL), body mass, jaw length head width, and head depth. Two general growth processes produce this adult SSD. First, juvenile males have greater annual SVL growth rates than do juvenile females, contributing to adult SSD because males will be larger than females in any trait positively correlated with SVL. Secondly, males and females differ in age-related changes in growth of the three head size traits, relative to growth in SVL. Comparing slopes from reduced major axis regressions of each trait on SVL reveals that the sexes do not differ in the scaling of these traits as juveniles, but as adults males have greater slopes than adult females, indicating ontogenetic differences in scaling of these traits in males. Two other topics in SSD are addressed with these data. First, comparing these data on scaling to those of an earlier analysis that used ordinary least squares regression reveals that conclusions about underlying mechanisms in an analysis of scaling can be altered by the choice of a regression model. Secondly, these data indicate that postmaturational differences in scaling contribute to adult sexual size differences, contrary to an earlier study. Shine (1990) found that for many ectotherms, which continue to grow after sexual maturation, post-maturational events contribute little to sexual differences in overall body size. Results for U. palmeri suggest that these findings may only hold for measures of overall body size (e.g. SVL) and may not generalize to traits that exhibit sex difference in scaling.
