This investigation represents the first integrated study of primary production, nutrient dynamics and mineralisation in a northeastern fjord of Greenland. The data presented represent conditions and activities during the early summer thaw (first 2 weeks of July). Primary production (5.3 mmol C m−2 d−2) and chlorophylla (4.1 μg 1−1) values were found to be comparable with measurements from other Arctic regions. Water column N-fixation rates were low (<0.02 μmol N m−1 d−1), but comparable with other estuarine systems. Despite a constant low temperature in the bottom waters (-1.0 to -1.8°C), a high sedimentary O2 uptake (740 μmol m−2 h−2) was observed and was primarily caused by the presence of benthic infauna. Bioturbation by benthic infauna was reflected in both homogeneous210Pb and137Cs profiles in the upper 4 cm of the sediment. Permanent accumulation within Young Sound was measured to 0.12 cm/year corresponding to 153 mmol C m−2 year−1 and 15 mmol N m−2 year−1. Rates of nitrification (22 μmol m−2 h−1) and denitrification (9 μmol m−2 h−1) were comparable with rates reported for other sediments with much higher environmental temperatures. Suphate reduction rates integrated over the upper 12 cm of the sediment were calculated to be 44 μmol m−2h−1.  相似文献

Egg production, growth and development rates of Oithona similiswere measured in the laboratory as a function of food concentrationand composition. On an optimum diet, development is isochronaland growth is near exponential. The maximum juvenile growthrate at 15C (0.2 day–1) is similar to juvenile growthin calanoid copepods. The maximum weight-specific egg productionrate (0.1 day–1), on the other hand, is substantiallyless than in free-spawning calanoids, but similar to that inegg-carrying calanoids. In the Kattegat, Oithona spp. egg productionis strongly limited by food during summer and controlled bytemperature during winter. Phytoplankton production and physico-chemical parameters were measured during the summers of 1976 and 1977 in Lake 95 at 60°52'N, 46°01'W (area 8 ha, z 6.9 m). The duration of lake stratification during summer was weather dependent. Concentrations of total-CO2 ranged from 2.04 mg l−1 (surface) to 4.02 mg l−1 (bottom during stratification). Nutrient concentrations were generally low, and systematic seasonal variation could not be detected with certainty. Vertical distribution of primary production typically showed a distinct maximum followed by a decline with depth. The low production, both per unit area (max. 60 mg C m−2 d−1) and per unit volume (max, 14.3 mg C m−3 d−1), and the annual production of 4.7 g C m−2 classified the lake as extremely oligotrophic.  相似文献

Around 2010, the alien copepod Oithona davisae was introduced to the Marmara Sea and Golden Horn Estuary to live alongside the native species, Oithona nana. By October 2015, the population number, including nauplii, of the introduced species (213,600 ind m?3) was higher than that of the native species (54,900 ind m?3) and close to that of O. davisae in Sevastopol Bay of the Black Sea (342,000 ind m?3) where it appeared 14 years ago. A high percentage of O. davisae females with ovisacs (up to 30% of total female number) carrying up to 15.1 ± 2.1 eggs in the sac and the predominance of nauplii in the population (up to 95% of the total population number) indicate that this alien copepod has become a permanent component of the Marmara Sea and Golden Horn Estuary ecosystem. Our experiments showed that in comparison with widely euryhaline O. davisae, O. nana is a stenohaline species. It has a salinity tolerance in the range of 13–27 psu and, in spite of having a larger body, a lower body density (1.037 ± 0.007 g cm?3) and sinking speed. Carbon-specific respiration rates of both species were close (0.32–0.38 μL O2 μgC?1 day?1) and similar to that of O. davisae from the Black Sea during this period but the frequency and speed of routine jumps, and the maximum escape reaction speed (up to 23.3 ± 1.7 cm s?1) in O. davisae from the Marmara Sea were significantly higher. This indicates the higher adaptive potential of O. davisae in this situation compared to that of O. nana.  相似文献

In Lake Oglethorpe, Georgia, USA, herbivorous crustacean zooplankton are abundant and dominate zooplankton biomass in winter, but are scarce throughout most of the summer. We used a 3.5 year study of Daphnia population dynamics to infer when food, predators or temperature constrained growth of this population. Transitions between winter and summer consumer assemblages are concurrent with seasonal changes in water temperature, thermal structure (stratification/destratification), resources (autotrophic/heterotrophic-domained production), and predator abundance and activity (e.g. Lepomis macrochirus and Chaoborus punctipennis. We sampled at weekly or less intervals from April 1992 to September 1995, and determined population abundances for all cladoceran species. For the Daphnia population (Daphnia ambigua + Daphnia parvula, we measured clutch size and length for all individuals. We used average water column temperature (where dissolved oxygen is >1 mg l-1) to estimate egg development time from an empirical model. Estimates of Daphnia population birth and death rate were thus generated from abundance, egg ratio and temperature/dissolved oxygen data. We compared observed birth rate (bobs) with expected birth rate (bexp>95% CI; predicted for food-saturated conditions at ambient temperature). For variable (1-13 week) periods between later November and March, 1992-1995, water temperature was the primary factor constraining Daphnia population growth (bobs = bexp). From about April to early November, bobs < bexp suggested food-limited population growth. In spring, summer and early fall (March-October), population densities were several-fold lower than in late fall and winter (November-February). However, all else being equal, egg ratio and population birth rate data would have predicted that Daphnia abundance fluctuates over equivalent ranges in spring and fall. We interpret this discrepancy as evidence for increased rates of extrinsic mortality during the growing season and a seasonal shift in the relative importance of resource and predator regulation. The duration of predator suppression of crustacean population abundance in Lake Oglethorpe and other warm-latitude lakes (36N-27°S) is longer (3-7 months) than that observed in north temperate lakes (1-2.5 months; 41-52°N).   相似文献

The planktonic and epibenthic crustacean fauna from two sites of the brackish Schlei fjord, Northern Germany, was investigated over a six-month period. Calanoid and cyclopoid copepods were more abundant in lower salinities, whereas, benthic decapods, isopods and amphipods prevailed in the site of higher salinity. Cestodan larvae were found only in spring which may be due to the timing of the respective life-cycles. Parasites of benthic crustaceans, mostly digenean metacercariae but also cestodans, acanthocephalans and nematodes, appeared from spring to late summer. Decreasing salinities caused lower intensities of the most abundant parasite,Maritrema subdolum; only the true brackish-water species among the hosts were more heavily infested than those found in higher salinities. The correlation of parasite size and host size at infestation became apparent. Therefore,Crangon crangon is an optimal host for the largePodocotyle atomon metacercariae. Coevolutive trends between some hosts and parasites are made evident.  相似文献

Population dynamics of Aeromonas spp. in an urban river watershed   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Density of Aeromonas spp. at one site in the Buffalo River and at four sites on its upstream tributaries was followed from June 1992–June 1993. Membrane filtration counts of Aeromonas during the summer ranged between 18 and 4000 ml−1, which were one to two logs higher than faecal coliform and faecal streptococci densities. Aeromonas spp. in the Buffalo River, and faecal coliforms, faecal streptococci, and the heterotrophic plate count throughout the watershed, increased by approximately one log during summer rainstorms. However, Aeromonas spp. increased only by a factor of two during rainstorms at the upstream sites. Aeromonas spp. showed a strong positive correlation with both indicator bacteria and total suspended solids at the upstream sites during the summer but not the winter. Correlations between Aeromonas and indicator bacteria remained strong in the Buffalo River during the winter, signifying that different conditions exist in the Buffalo River and its upstream tributaries. The strong correlation between Aeromonas spp. and indicator bacteria in the Buffalo River suggest that, in the absence of media capable of the quantitative recovery of potentially pathogenic aeromonads, standard faecal coliform analyses may adequately assess public health risks from Aeromonas spp. in an urban river used for recreational purposes.  相似文献

The population dynamics ofDaphnia rosea were studied in a small, eutrophic fish-free pond during November 1986–November 1987.D. rosea showed two density peaks in 1987, a high peak in spring and a slightly lower one in autumn, but they disappeared in mid- and late summer when a smaller cladoceran,Ceriodaphnia reticulata, dominated. The rapid decline in density ofD. rosea in mid-May and the low density in June/July were preceded by or coincided with a period of increased male density, the appearance of ephippial females, smaller body length of adult females, decreased brood size, and increased frequency of empty brood chambers, all of which indicate a worsening food situation. The rapid density decline ofD. rosea in mid-May was considered attributable neither to increasing water temperature, nor predation by the dipteranChaoborus flavicans, but to insufficient food conditions for the maintenance of stable reproduction. Although edible phytoplankton was abundant in June/July, the general food situation was not suitable forD. rosea due to blooms of the large-celled dinoflagellate,Ceratium hirundinella, which probably inhibited the feeding activity ofD. rosea. TheC. hirundinella blooms might also be important for the shift of the dominant herbivore from the largerD. rosea to the smallerCeriodaphnia reticulata in August/September.  相似文献

Callinan A. P. L. and Arundel J. H. 1982. Population dynamics of the parasitic stages of Ostertagia spp. in sheep. International Journal for Parasitology12: 531–535. The development and survival of continuing infections of Ostertagia spp. in weaner sheep were studied in order to develop a general model of the parasitic stages of the life cycle of these sheep nematodes. After 10 days, 13.8% of infective larvae (L3) given at the rate of 1 dose of 1000 L3 twice per week (group 1) and 20.8% of L3 given at the rate of 10,000 L3 twice per week (group 2) were recovered in the first of the serial nematode counts. In the final counts at 137 days, 7.7 and 0.7% were recovered in these groups. The build up and maintenance of nematode populations was regulated and related to the level of infection. A model in which the death rate of the parasitic stages was a function of the time of exposure to infection and rate of infection was used to describe the serial total nematode counts. During the experiment there was no noticeable trend in numbers of fourth stage larvae (L4) in nematode counts, the size of adult nematodes, nematode egg counts (EPG) and egg output per female nematode (EPF). After 112 days, liveweight gains were significantly reduced in group 2 only, but increases in wool lengths were significantly reduced in both groups.  相似文献

We offer an evaluation of the Caughley and Krebs hypothesis that small mammals are more likely than large mammals to possess intrinsic population regulating mechanisms. Based on the assumption that intrinsic regulation will be manifest via direct density-dependent feedbacks, and extrinsic regulation via delayed density-dependent feedbacks, we fit autoregressive models to 30 time series of abundance for large and small mammals to characterize their dynamics. Delayed feedbacks characterizing extrinsic mechanisms, such as trophic-level interactions, were detected in most time series, including both small and large mammals. Spectral analyses indicated that the effect of such delayed feedbacks on the variability in population growth rates differed with body size, with large mammals exhibiting predominantly reddened and whitened spectra in contrast with predominantly blue spectra for small mammals. Large mammals showed less variance and more stable dynamics than small mammals, consistent with, among other factors, differences in their potential population growth rates. Patterns of population dynamics in small versus large mammals contradicted those predicted by the Caughley and Krebs hypothesis.  相似文献

The population dynamics and production of Daphnia hyaiina^ the dominant cladoceran i n Eglwys Nynydd, a shallow eutrophic reservoir in South Wales, were studied for 2 years against a background of limnological measurements. The appearance and development of successive generations from egg to adult could be followed from changing numbers in arbitrarily defined size classes. Seasonal variations in mean length, mean brood-size and proportion of gravid adults were recorded and mean brood-size was related to changing food and temperature conditions. Egg-development times for D. hyaiina were determined in culture and the population parameters finite birth (S), instantaneous birth (b′), instantaneous population change (r′), instantaneous death (d′) and finite death rates (D) were estimated from field data. Turnover and production estimates were calculated from finite death rates and biomass. The calculated potential rate of increase (b′) was nearly always greater than the observed rate of increase (r′): seasonal changes in death rate (d′) generally parallel changes in birth rate (b′) but remain somewhat out of phase. Population oscillations are probably due t o a delay in the expression of the effects of population density upon birth and death rates. The mean biomass of Daphnia in 1970 was 0-57 mg dry wt/l (0-88 g C/m2) and in 1971 0-32 mg dry wt/l (0.49 g C/m2). Annual production for Daphnia was 11-8 mg dry wt/l (18-2 g C/m2) in 1970 and 8-30 mg dry wt/l (12 8 g C/m2) in 1971. Information available on primary production in the reservoir suggests that the production of Daphnia accounts for less than 2% of gross primary production. However, the pattern of population growth of Daphnia in Eglwys Nynydd almost certainly reflects a food limited system. In summer, blue-green algae may be abundant but serve as a poor food source: throughout the blue-green bloom egg production remains low, at times remaining below 0-5 eggs/adult.  相似文献

A diatom-based reconstruction of surface-water paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic changes in Ameralik Fjord, southwest Greenland, is presented for the Holocene interval 8800 to 3600 cal yrs B.P. A minor episode of cold surface-water conditions is found at ca. 8000–7800 cal yrs B.P. This may be due to the local conditions in the fjord and linked to the culmination of a strong melt-water outflow rather than reflecting the widespread North Atlantic (8.2 ka) cooling event. Warming of surface-water condition from 7800 to 7100 cal yrs B.P., probably corresponding to the early and warmest part of the Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM) in this region, is reflected in the diatom assemblages and supported by other proxies. The West Greenland Current (WGC) influences the fjord strongly during this interval, indicating enhanced advection of Atlantic water-masses derived from the Irminger Current (IC). A major sedimentary change with a hiatus between 6800 and 4400 cal yrs B.P. prevents a reconstruction of mid-Holocene paleoceanograpy. The final and less prominent part of the HTM is found after 4400 cal yrs B.P. Previous studies from the same site have shown this final stage of the HTM to end at 3200 cal yrs B.P. with the onset of the ‘Neoglaciation’. Our study provides further evidence that the marine sedimentary record from West Greenland fjords yields paleoenvironmental information reflecting a significant link between local and large scale North Atlantic oceanographic and climatic changes.  相似文献

In nonamended soil, vegetative growth and sporulation ofFusarium spp. were higher in the rhizosphere than in the soil. Sporulation was favoured by young plants and decreased with increasing plant age. Amendments with low C/N oil-cakes enhanced vegetative growth and sporulation in root-free soil. The extent of stimulation varied with the nature of organic matter used and the stage of its deoomposition. Sporulation was suppressed by castor cake and sawdust with urea amendments. Twenty-five lambs grazing a parasite-contaminated pasture were divided into four groups. One group of seven lambs were left untreated and three groups of six lambs each were treated with levamisole at 2 week, 3 week or 1 month intervals respectively. Body weights, fecal egg counts and packed cell volumes were determined every 2 weeks for 8 weeks. Lambs were then necropsied on the day they would have received another treatment, thus the maximum accumulation of parasites at each treatment frequency was measured. Treatment at 2 and 3 week intervals markedly suppressed fecal egg counts, but egg counts of sheep treated every month rose between treatments and untreated animals continually shed eggs. Treatment at all three frequencies provided only slight protection from blood loss, but it lessened weight loss. There was little difference between treatment groups in burdens of adult H. contortus, but burdens of T. axei and T. colubriformis and arrested larvae of H. contortus increased with decreasing frequency of treatment. The results support the findings of other workers that Trichostrongylus spp. have a long adult life span and continue to accumulate with time, whereas H. contortus may have a short adult life span and a rapid population turnover. In the face of constant reinfection, repeated anthelmintic treatment gives more protection from the effects of the long-lived parasites than from those with a rapid population turnover.  相似文献

In the epipelagic ocean, the genus Oithona is considered as one of the most abundant and widespread copepods and plays an important role in the trophic food web. Despite its ecological importance, little is known about Oithona and cyclopoid copepods genomics. Therefore, we sequenced, assembled and annotated the genome of Oithona nana. The comparative genomic analysis integrating available copepod genomes highlighted the expansions of genes related to stress response, cell differentiation and development, including genes coding Lin12‐Notch‐repeat (LNR) domain proteins. The Oithona biogeography based on 28S sequences and metagenomic reads from the Tara Oceans expedition showed the presence of O. nana mostly in the Mediterranean Sea (MS) and confirmed the amphitropical distribution of Oithona similis. The population genomics analyses of O. nana in the Northern MS, integrating the Tara Oceans metagenomic data and the O. nana genome, led to the identification of genetic structure between populations from the MS basins. Furthermore, 20 loci were found to be under positive selection including four missense and eight synonymous variants, harbouring soft or hard selective sweep patterns. One of the missense variants was localized in the LNR domain of the coding region of a male‐specific gene. The variation in the B‐allele frequency with respect to the MS circulation pattern showed the presence of genomic clines between O. nana and another undefined Oithona species possibly imported through Atlantic waters. This study provides new approaches and results in zooplankton population genomics through the integration of metagenomic and oceanographic data.  相似文献

Population dynamics of small mammals was monitored in urbanized forest ecosystems on a long-term basis. Urban rodent communities had higher densities due to a large proportion of hemisynanthropic species of Apodemus (Sylvemus) genus. It was found that small mammals displayed similar population dynamics in the park-forests in the same type of forest, but the pattern broke down in the city. Urban stress proved to have a stronger influence on the structure and population dynamics of small mammals than site conditions. Transformation of lower plant layers disturbs habitat of some species and creates favorable conditions for others. Increasing species richness and thickness of shrub layer make site conditions more favorable for the wood mouse and the field mouse—species that do not normally inhabit coniferous forests.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The population dynamics and annual production of the multivoltine. pelagic amphipod Hyalella montezuma were studied over a 3-year period in the thermally constant environment of Montezuma Well. Arizona.
2. H. montezuma showed two maxima which coincided with spring and autumn phytoplankton maxima. Juveniles comprised over 85% of the population in the pelagic zone compared to 37% in the littoral vegetation and there were significantly more females in the littoral vegetation. It appears that juvenile and adult H. montezuma show different habitat preferences.
3. Total annual mean production for H. montezuma calculated by the size frequency method and adjusted for multiple generations, was 357 kg ha−1 yr−1, which is higher than single-species production estimates reported for most zoobenthic amphipods and multivoltine planktonic crustaceans. Average energy production for H. montezuma was 4640 kJ ha−1 yr−1 in the pelagic zone and 1072 kJ ha−1 yr−1 in the littoral vegetation.
4. Average cohort P / ratios for H. montezuma were higher in the pelagic zone (5.5) than in the litttoral vegetation (3.7). Juveniles had higher cohort P ratios than adults in the pelagic zone, while the reverse relationship was true in the littoral vegetation. We propose that different size-selective predators may contribute to the differences in P ratios for juveniles and adults in these two habitats.  相似文献

The seasonal and longitudinal dynamics of dominant phytoplanktonpopulations were observed in the lower Spree (Germany), a lowlandriver draining several lakes. Centric diatoms and cyanobacteriawere the chief components of the total phytoplankton biomassof 16 mg–1 at the end of the river course (average March-October,1988–89). The cyanobacteria required a retention timeof several weeks in a drained lake to establish stable populations,whereas the other algal populations originated from upstreamimpoundments and slow-flowing river stretches. In spring, thedominant populations increased (the diatoms Nitzschia acicularis,Asterionella formosa, Stephanodiscus hantzschii. Cyclostephanosdubius, Cyclotella radiosa, C.meneghiniana) or kept their abundancesnearly constant (cyanobacterium Limnothrix redekei. diatom Synedraacus), but the biomass of the ‘summer species’ (diatomActinocyclus normanii, cyanobacteria Planktothrix agardhii andAphanizomenonsp.) was halved along the river course. These seasonal differencesin algal growth are probably caused by the changed mixing patternin the regions of origin and thus different pre-adaptation toturbulent mixing. Pronounced dear-water phases occurred regularlyat the end of May. They were intensified along the river coursedespite the lack of mesozooplankton. The dynamics of phytoplanktonwere reflected in the proportions of dissolved and particulatenutrients. The nutrient supply was always high enough to makelimitations of algal growth improbable.  相似文献
