Fourth and 5th instar larvae ofHeliothis armigera (Hübner) parasitised byEucelatoria bryani Sabrosky consumed significantly less chickpea flour diet than unparasitised larvae of the same age in the laboratory. Significant reduction in diet consumption, larval weight gain and frass produced at 24 and 48 h following parasitisation was observed in 5th instar host larvae. Parasitised larvae retained a greater percentage of food ingested (AD) than did the unparasitised ones. Unparasitised 5th instar larvae ofH. armigera were more efficient in converting the ingested food (ECI) and digested food (ECD) into body substance than larvae of similar age parasitised byE. bryani.  相似文献

The life history and behavior ofEuplectrus laphygmae Ferrière were studied. The parasites paralyse the host larvae temporarily before ovipositing 1–2 eggs on their dorsum. Egg and larval development takes place externally in the location of egg deposition and pupation is in a silken cocoon under the dead host. Development lasts 11.7 days for both sexes. The eggs are attached to the host with a pedicel that is inserted under the cuticle but above the hypodermis, and which may have physiological and mechanical functions. The adult parasites host-feed, but do not lay on the same host. All hosts stung by parasites die, regardless whether oviposition has occurred, or whether host larvae develop upon them. Multiparasitism with internal parasites ofSpodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) was observed. A comparison with otherEuplectrus species was made. They have a wide range of lepidopterous hosts but very similar biological characteristics. Only very few utilizations for biological control have been reported with this genus.  相似文献

Predation byGeocoris punctipes (Say) andNabis spp. onEpilachna varivestis Mulsant was studied in the laboratory at 26.7°C and in field cages containing soybeans. Both predator groups fed uponE. varivestis eggs, 1st, 2nd and 3rd stage larvae, but not upon 4th stage larvae, pupae, or adults. G. punctipes females produced significantly fewer eggs when fedE. varivestis eggs or 1st stage larvae than those fedGalleria mellonella (L.). Longevity of maleG. punctipes was significantly reduced when fedE. varivestis eggs; however, female longevity was not affected. Results from field cage tests indicated bothG. punctipes andNabis spp. could significantly reduce the density ofE. varivestis.  相似文献

Adult femaleLophyroplectus luteator (Thunb.) oviposit in all feeding stages ofNeodiprion sertifer (Geoff.), although they prefer the smallest of any larvae present at a given time. Females tend to distribute eggs contagiously both within and between host feeding colonies. Eclosion of eggs does not occur until after the host has spun its cocoon. Larval development then requires approximately 1 month in the laboratory. There is an obligatory eonymphal diapause which requires a minimum of 60–80 days at 2°C to fulfil, and post-diapause development requires 3–4 weeks.  相似文献

A kairomone in the frass and vomitus of larvae ofAgrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) triggered larviposition activity in its habitual parasitoidBonnetia comta (Fallen) (Diptera: Tachinidae). Laboratory bioassays showed that no measurable differences existed in the larviposition-stimulating activity of frass fromA. ipsilon larvae reared on 3 different food sources. In other tests, corn seedlings damaged by late-instar larvae ofA. ipsilon elicited strong larviposition activity inB. comta; other corn seedlings damaged with a razor blade did not elicit strong activity. Frass aged for 8-days was only slightly less effective at releasing a larviposition response when compared to fresh frass.B. comta was not stimulated to larviposit by oven dried frass or an India ink dot the color and shape of a fresh pellet from a host larva. The arthropod parasites and predators ofAcraea terpsicore (L.) were determined in the forest zone of Ghana. An unidentified mite was predatory on the very young larvae. The pentatomidsPlatynopus rostratus Dru. andMacrorhaphis acuta (Dall.) were also predatory on the larvae.Telenomus sp. parasitized the eggs. The tachinidCarcelia normula (Curran) and the ichneumonidCharops diversipes Roman were parasitic on the larvae.C. diversipes was hyperparasitized by the chalcididBrachymeria feae Masi and the eulophidPediobius taylori Kerrich. Laboratory tests showed that parasitism ofA. terpsicore byC. diversipes was significantly highest in the 1st instar, followed by the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The 5th instar was not parasitized. These results seemed to reflect both host susceptibility and parasite preference. Only a singleC. diversipes larva developed in a host. The developmental period of the parasite egg and larva varied inversely with the age of the host at which it was parasitized. A femaleC. diversipes could oviposit immediately after emergence.  相似文献

The ability of female larvae endoparasitoids [Microplitis croceipes Cresson:Cardiochiles nigriceps Viereck andCumpoletis sonorensis (Carlson)] to distinguish between unparasitized tobacco budworm,Heliothis virescens (F.), larvae andH. virescens larvae parasitized by the egg-larval parasitoidChelonus insularis,Cresson, was determined in laboratory studies. The 3 species of larval endoparasitoid females did not appear capable of distinguishing between unparasitized andC. insularis parasitized larvae resulting in multiple parasitoidism. The results of the ensuing competition between the 3 species for possession of the host demonstrated that bothC. sonorensis andM. croceipes were intrinsically superior toC. insularis. Both larva endoparasitoids destroyed the olderC. insularis larvae by physically attacking the latter. The presence ofC. insularis larvae in the host was found to prevent the hatch of compeatingC. nigriceps eggs through physiological suppression. The results show that the early attack of a host, as in the egg-larval parasitoid habit, is not necessarily advantageous.  相似文献

The developmental interactions between the gregarious endoparasitoidApanteles ruficrus Hal. and the army worm,Leucania separata Walker were investigated. The parasitoid preferred young host larvae and developed in 9.5 days irrespective of host age at the time of parasitization. The growth of parasitized host larvae were depressed. The net maximum weight of the host larva was positively correlated with the number of parasitoid eggs laid when the 2nd instar was parasitized. And when parasitizing in 2nd instar, the weight of parasitoid was negatively correlated with the number of eggs laid. The parasitoid has an ability to regulate the size of the host and the parasitoid itself according to the number of eggs laid when the host larva is very small.  相似文献

Iphiaulax kimballi Kirkland is a gregarious ectoparasite of the mature larval stage ofDiatraea grandiosella Dyar in Mexico. The developmental rate from egg to adult is 16.3±1.0 (x±S.D.) at 29°C. The sex ratio is 1.7∶1 (♀∶♂) in the field. Following host paralysis the female deposits 63.5±2.1 eggs during der 28.6±6.4 day adult-life span; laying 4.6±3.1 eggs on each host. Larvae ofEpilachna varivestis Mulsant, parasitized byPediobius foveolatus (Crawford), were collected in soybean fields in Maryland during 1975. AdultP. foveolatus emerging from the larvae were sexed and counted. The ratio of males to females increased as the availability of food within the host decreased. Superparasitism ofEpilachna varivestis Mulsant larvae by the hymenopterous parasitoid,Pediobius foveolatus (Crawford), occurred under laboratory conditions. However,P. foveolatus avoided previously parasitized larvae in a manner which was directly related to the number of times host larvae were initially parasitized. Increasing the parasitoid-host ratio also increased percent host mortality and highest overall host mortality occurred at 15.6°C when the parasitoid-host ratio was 10∶10. Higher temperatures (22° and 28°C) and higher parasitoid-host ratios yielded higher numbers of parasitized larvae although a significant number of parasitoids failed to emerge at the highest parasitoid-host ratio. Higher temperatures along with increasing parasitoid-host ratios favored production of more male parasitoids.  相似文献

The population density ofPerisierola nephantidis Mues. acts as key mortality factor in the biological control ofNephantis serinopa Meyrick. The mortality ofN. serinopa was directly proportional to the density of parasiteP. nephantidis and recorded a maximum of 96% at 1∶8 ratio of host to parasite at constant population of host. The suitability of thirteen aphid species for the polyphagous larvae ofMetasyrphus corollae (Fabr.) was investigated in laboratory tests. The length of larval and pupal development, weight of puparia, mortality during larval and pupal stages were compared. Laboratory studies showed that 1st-instarBonnetia comta (Fallén) maggots (planidia) had a significant impact (P<0.05) on mortality of all black cutworm (BCW),Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel), instars, either by killing 1st- and 2nd-instar BCWs 2.3 to 9.7 days after parasitization or by producing a puparium from older host instars. Diet consumption and utilization by BCW larvae parasitized byB. comta as 4th instars were similar to those of nonparasitized larvae until 1 to 2 days before the parasitoid emerged. In a 2-year host exposure study in Iowa, it was found thatB. comta primarily parasitized released BCWs in June through September and did not seem to play a role in controlling the damaging 1st generation of BCW larvae. Techniques were developed to produce and store large numbers ofB. comta planidia.Bonnetia comta deposited large numbers of planidia on filter paper treated with a fecal supernatant. These planidia could be stored on filter paper in a covered Petri dish at 4.4°C for 5 days with minimal mortality. Preliminary field data show that planidia placed around corn seedlings infested with 4th-instar BCW larvae do parasitize the pest and reduce the hosts cutting potential.  相似文献

The larvae of the water mitesHydrachna conjecta andH. cruenta are parasitic on corixids.H. conjecta larvae are attached to the underside of the hemelytra of the host and those ofH. cruenta to the legs. The growth ofH. cruenta larvae is less than that of the more shelteredH. conjecta larvae. The infection influences the egg production of the host: infectedSigara striata females have fewer eggs in the ovarioles than uninfected ones. The number of eggs in the ovarioles of the host is related to the size of the parasite. It may be assumed that the presence ofH. conjecta larvae causes a lower fecundity in the host than those ofH. cruenta. InCymatia coleoptrata, a much smaller host thanS. striata, the fecundity is even more impaired by both parasite species. For in the ovarioles of infectedC. coleoptrata females no developed eggs were found at all. When females ofTrichogramma pretiosum Riley were confined with host eggs at a density of 2/150 eggs, they produced 12 times more female progeny on eggs of potato tuber moth than on eggs ofHeliothis armigera (Hübner) and 13,6 times more on eggs ofSitotroga cerealella (Olivier) than on eggs ofHeliothis. At a density of 4/150 eggs, the correspondent figures were 13 and 8 times. The percentage emergence fromHeliothis eggs was from 0,29 to 0,14 times as great as from tuber moth orSitotroga. From 15 to 140 times more runts were observed amongTrichogramma fromHeliothis eggs than among those from tuber moth eggs and 8 times more thant among those fromSitotroga eggs. This may explain the low recoveries in South Africa ofT. pretiosum in eggs ofH. armigera collected in cotton fields after mass liberation of the parasite. An increase in parasite density from 1/300 eggs to 16/300 eggs resulted in a decrease from 29 to 14 in the hosts parasitised per female, a decrease in the proportion of female progeny from 72 to 39%, a decrease in the female progeny per female from 18 to 4,8, and an increase in the proportion of runts from 2,4 to 12,4%. It is suggested that in mass culture ofTrichogramma unduly high parasite densities should be avoided in order to reduce the effect of mutual interference and raise the output of female progeny.  相似文献

Studies on deepwater rice in Bangladesh from 1977 to 1980 showed that 61–89% of the egg masses of the yellow rice borer,Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker), were attacked by hymenopterous parasites. Egg parasitism increased from 43–48% in broods 2–4 (May–August) to 64–88% in broods 5–6 (September–November). Parasitism was reduced in broods 4 and 5 in 1979 (because of lower host densities) and in 1980 (possibly due to extreme late flooding). Telenomus rowani (Gahan), active throughout the year, parasitized 64% of the eggs in the masses it attacked, 32 larvae/mass surviving.Tetrastichus schoenobii Ferrière first appearing at medium host densities, increased rapidly to attack half of the brood 5 and 6 masses. More than 98% of the eggs in the attacked masses were parasitized, leaving only 1.6 surviving larvae/mass. In 1979 its appearance was delayed by 10 weeks and fewer masses were parasitized due to lower host densities.Trichogramma japonicum Ashmead andTelenomus sp. (a new record) were less important. Multiple parasitism of masses rose from 7% in brood 2 to 28% in brood 5. Egg parasites clearly reduce the numbers ofS. incertulas, a major pest, and thus probably improve the yields of deepwater rice.  相似文献

VirginCoccophagus cowperi Girault females were allowed to deposit male eggs on a complete series (egg to nearly fully-formed adults) of developing female individuals of their own species, these females developing as primary, internal parasites of their scale hosts. Dissections of a subsample of this material indicated that the virgin females expressed a host stage preference for the large larval and prepupal stages. A large proportion of the eggs were deposited on mature primary parasite larvae prior to their expulsion of the meconium. The male eggs were directly anchored to the primary parasite.  相似文献

In laboratory studies the effect of parasitism by the egg-larval endoparasitoidChelonus insularis Cresson on the resulting larvae of 2 host species,Heliothis virescens (F.) andSpodoptera ornithogalli Guénée) were determined by comparing daily measurements of larval weights. Growth of parasitized larvae of both host species was slower than growth of unparasitized larvae. Injections of fluids from the female parasitoid's calyx or poison gland intoH. virescens eggs retarded subsequent larval growth. However, a combination of fluids from these 2 organs produced the most significant reduction in the host larval growth rate. The growth reducing factor(s) was also effective when injected into 5-day-old host larvae.  相似文献
