Parietaria judaica (Urticaceae) grows abundantly in urban areas of the Mediterranean region. Its pollen is a major allergy source. We studied the species’ distribution and abundance in and around Thessaloniki (Greece), pollen production and pollen season. We also examined how urban pollution affects pollen viability. Our ultimate goal was to obtain an estimate of the species’ performance and ability to expand under different environmental conditions related to climate change. We mapped P. judaica and the other Urticaceae species. In a north- and a south-facing population, we recorded the progress of P. judaica flowering and estimated the pollen content per flower, shoot and surface unit. We concurrently assessed atmospheric circulation of Urticaceae pollen. We estimated P. judaica pollen viability and Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations in plants collected from sites differing in traffic intensity. P. judaica is the most abundant Urticaceae species in the area; its occurrence has increased dramatically over the last 100 years. Production of flowers is intense in spring and autumn. Flowering started 12 days earlier in the south-facing population in spring, and 3 days later in autumn. Pollen production was higher in spring and in the south-facing population. Flower and pollen production were positively correlated with the size of the plant and the flower, respectively. Copper and lead concentrations in plants were positively correlated with pollen viability, which was higher for plants collected from high-traffic sites. P. judaica has a high phenotypic plasticity; this is a feature that promotes success of expansive and invasive species. It is also well adapted to warm and polluted urban environments. The climatic change forecast for the Mediterranean region could provoke earlier, longer, and more pronounced flowering and, consequently, more P. judaica pollen in the air. In return, this would result in increased severity of Parietaria pollinosis.  相似文献

Summary A study to evaluate and define the atmospheric pollen concentration in Trentino was carried out through the aerobiologic sampling in three localities chosen according to their different climatic conditions.1375 patients with pollinosis living in Trentino were studied retrospectively over the period ranging from 1986 to 1988 and selected according to the area they came from. Results have proved that the most allergenic pollen types are the following: Poaceae, Urticaceae (Parietaria), Compositae (Artemisia) and the tree pollen of Betulaceae and Corylaceae (Alnus, Betula, Corylus), and that pollinosis caused by such pollen, types has different features and frequencies according to the different localities. As far as symptoms are concerned, our data shows that rhinoconjuntivitis is more frequent in those patients who are allergic toParietaria while asthma results being more frequent in patients who are allergic to tree pollen.  相似文献

Summary. Rapid diffusion of allergenic proteins in isotonic media has been demonstrated for different pollen grains. Upon contact with stigmatic secretion or with the mucosa of sensitive individuals, pollen grains absorb water and release soluble low-molecular-weight proteins, these proteins enter in the secretory pathway in order to arrive at the cell surface. In this study we located allergenic proteins in mature and hydrated-activated pollen grains of Parietaria judaica L. (Urticaceae) and studied the diffusion of these proteins during the first 20 min of the hydration and activation processes. A combination of transmission electron microscopy and immunocytochemical methods was used to locate these proteins in mature pollen and in pollen grains after different periods of hydration and activation processes. Activated proteins reacting with antibodies in human serum from allergic patients were found in the cytoplasm, wall, and exudates from the pollen grains. The allergenic component of these pollen grains changes according to the pollen state; the presence of these proteins in the exine, the cytoplasm, and especially in the intine and in the material exuded from the pollen grains, is significant in the hydrated-activated studied times, whereas this presence is not significant in mature pollen grains. The rapid activation and release of allergenic proteins of P. judaica pollen appears to be the main cause of the allergenic activity of these pollen grains. Background and aimsThis paper is about pollen ecophysiology, anther opening, pollen dispersal and the timing of the male and female phases in Parietaria judaica (Urticaceae).MethodsEcophysiological (effects of different relative humidities (RHs) and osmotic relationships) and cytological methods (stigmatic receptivity, pollen viability, histology and histochemistry) were used to determine pollen and pollination features during the long blooming period of this species.Key resultsPollen is dispersed by rapid uncurling of the filament and anther opening. The filament and anther lack cells with lignified wall thickenings, which are usually responsible for anther opening and ballistic pollen dispersal. Instead, dispersal is the result of the sudden movement of the filament. Pollen is of the partially hydrated type, i.e. with a water content greater than 30% at shedding, and readily loses water, and hence viability, at low RH. Pollen carbohydrate reserves differ with season. Starchless grains germinate quickly and are less subject to water loss. Flowers are protogynous, pollen release occurring only after complete cessation of the female phase within an inflorescence.ConclusionParietaria has partially hydrated pollen which differs from typical pollen of this type because of its reduced size and the absence of callose. Because of its low water content at the time of shedding it survives better at higher RH. Dispersal and pollination are adapted to pollen features.  相似文献

Parietaria judaica pollen is a common cause of airway allergic disease in the Mediterranean area. Proteome analysis of mature Parietaria judaica pollen by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and mass spectrometry has established the first reference proteome map of this weed. Proteins involved in a variety of cellular functions as well as the occurrence of allergens were detected. By using 2-DE and immunoblotting with sera from Parietaria judaica allergic patients we obtained a more detailed characterization of Parietaria judaica allergen profile so to improve our comprehension of the pathogenesis of pollen-induced allergic reaction.  相似文献

Summary Epidemiological and aerobiological observations (1987;1989) have been carried out for three years in order to search the existing relationship between the Gramineae's daily pollen concentration in Palermo's atmosphere and the number of hay fever cases due to such pollen. The aerobiological data were obtained with a 2000 VPPS volumetric sampler. Clinical research was performed on 555 hay fever patients treated in our ambulatory over a three-year period (1987–1989).These data, elaborated by a seven day running mean method and correlated with epidemiological data, evidenced that three of the pollen families in our territory are clinically important: Urticaceae,Parietaria prevailing among them, Gramineae and Oleaceae,Olea europaea prevailing among them. The Gramineae are the second most important allergenic pollen (32,08% of all the pollinosis) whereas, as far as its concentration in the atmosphere is concerned; it ranks third followingParietaria and Oleaceae.  相似文献

Summary The observations of airborne pollen ofOlea europea and the incidence of clinical manifestations in patients allergic to this pollen type have not been registered so far in the city of Thessaloniki. The purpose of this study was: 1. to assess theO. europea pollen circulation in the area of our city, and 2. to detect the percentage of sensitivity toO. europea pollen in patients with pollinosis. We collected daily pollen samples during a 3-year period (February '87-January '90), using a Burkard volumetric trap, located on a high level area in the centre of the city. The pollen counts were then registered. The O.europea pollen grains were not differentiated microscopically from the other Oleaceae, but identified through phenological criteria. The patients included in the assessment of the sensitivity toO. europea came from the out-patient clinic of bronchial asthma of the General Hospital ?G. Papanicolaou?. They had a seasonal pollinosis and they were submitted to prick test using a battery of 22 groups and an O.europea extract. Pollen ofO. europea appears first in the atmosphere of Thessaloniki at the beginning of May, shows a peak in the end of May and continues to be present till the end of June. The quantity ofO. europea pollen ranked 6th in the list of the total pollen count and its flowering period coincided with that of grasses. In a sample of 360 patients with seasonal pollinosis, we detected anO. europea pollen sensitivity combined with other alleargens in 37% of the patients and a monosensivity in 4%. We conclude that pollen ofO. europea results to be present over a relative short period of time (May–June) in the area of Thessaloniki. The percentage of patients' sensitization toO. europea pollen was a little less frequent than sensitization to grasses, even if their flowering time coincides and their presence in the air shows about the same concentration values.  相似文献

We have studied Ragweed pollen concentration in the atmosphere of Leghorn (Livorno), where Ragweed is not widespread. Our data, from 1991 to 1995, confirm the presence of Ragweed pollen in the atmosphere of Leghorn in low concentrations (highest value of 11 pollen grains/m3) from August to the end of September. Even if the sensitization level in our area is 6.76%, the clinical significance of Ragweed pollinosis is still very low.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to localise non‐specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs), obtained from Rosaceae (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) in pollen grains of taxonomically distant plants, such as Iridaceae (Aristea latifolia G.J. Lewis), Platanaceae (Platanus acerifolia (Aiton) Willd.) and Urticaceae (Parietaria judaica L.), in order to compare pollen and nsLTP diversity. A combination of transmission electron microscopy, immunocytochemical techniques, and rabbit specific antiserum against peach nsLTPs (Pru p 3) were used. Abundant labelling to Pru p 3‐like proteins was observed in the cytoplasm, walls and pollenkitt of A. latifolia pollen grains. The presence of nsLTPs associated with the pollenkitt proves that it takes part in the defence mechanism of pollen grains. The labelling was less intense in the cytoplasm and walls of P. acerifolia. Immuno‐stained gold particles were associated with the vacuoles, lipid inclusions, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex. No significant labelling was found in the P. judaica pollen grains incubated with anti‐Pru p 3 polyclonal antibodies. These results indicate important variations in the nsLTPs of different pollen species. Consequently, no taxonomic relationship between pollen grains and nsLTPs could be established.  相似文献

Monuments and archaeological areas are oftencolonized by infesting plants, many of whichproduce allergenic pollen that can causeallergic symptoms in sensitive subjects. Pollen monitoring was carried out by a portablevolumetric spore trap in some Romanarchaeological areas and in two small cities inLatium (Central Italy), before and after achemical treatment to eradicate infestingplants of Parietaria spp. to control thequality of the air. Results indicate that the herbicide treatmentreduced the presence of Parietaria plantsand their pollen concentration in the air inthe sites which were the subject of this study.  相似文献

Plantago L. species are very common in nitrified areas such as roadsides and their pollen is a major cause of pollinosis in temperate regions. In this study, we sampled airborne pollen grains in the city of León (NW, Spain) from January 1995 to December 2011, by using a Burkard® 7-day-recording trap. The percentage of Plantago pollen compared to the total pollen count ranged from 11 % (1997) to 3 % (2006) in the period under study. Peak pollen concentrations were recorded in May and June. Our 17-year analysis failed to disclose significant changes in the seasonal trend of plantain pollen concentration. In addition, there were no important changes in the start dates of pollen release and the meteorological parameters analyzed did not show significant variations in their usual trends. We analyzed the influence of several meteorological parameters on Plantago pollen concentration to explain the differences in pollen concentration trends during the study. Our results show that temperature, sun hours, evaporation, and relative humidity are the meteorological parameters best correlated to the behavior of Plantago pollen grains. In general, the years with low pollen concentrations correspond to the years with less precipitation or higher temperatures. We calculated the approximate Plantago flowering dates using the cumulative sum of daily maximum temperatures and compared them with the real bloom dates. The differences obtained were 4 days in 2009, 3 days in 2010, and 1 day in 2011 considering the complete period of pollination.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate aerobiological dynamics of pollen in the Mediterranean part of Croatia in the air of the city of Split. Pollen monitoring during the period from 2005 to 2013 was performed using a Hirst volumetric trap. Among the identified pollen of 50 taxa, 21 were allergenic. The average annual pollen index was 33,513. Three pollination seasons were established: early winter season dominated by tree pollen, spring–summer season dominated by herbaceous plants and summer–autumn season with lower amounts of Parietaria and Cupressaceae pollen. According to the abundance, the main taxa were: Cupressaceae, Parietaria/Urtica, Pinus, Quercus, Olea, Carpinus/Ostrya, Poaceae, Platanus and Ambrosia. The annual pollen index together with the daily maximum concentrations showed an upward trend for selected taxa during the study period. The highest monthly pollen index and the highest biodiversity were recorded in April and the lowest during the late autumn and winter months. The pollen calendar created for the city of Split confirmed Mediterranean features of the pollen spectrum. The longest pollen seasons were recorded for Cupressaceae, Parietaria/Urtica and Poaceae pollen types. The correlations between pollen concentrations and meteorological parameters were analyzed. The correlations between pollen concentrations and temperature were positive, while the humidity and the precipitation mostly showed negative influence.  相似文献

The somatic stability and the mode of transmission of B chromosomes were studied in diploid Orchard Grass: Dactylis glomerata L. ssp. judaica Steb. et Zoh. Somatic mosaics (different numbers of B's in different tillers) were detected in 4 out of 17 plants. Examination of the first and the second divisions of the male gametophyte revealed non-disjunction and preferential migration of the B's to the generative nucleus. Progeny from eight different cross-combinations were examined. The results obtained corroborate the direct evidence on accumulation of B's in the pollen grains, but the transmission patterns observed are too complex to be explained by this mechanism only.  相似文献

Pollinosis from Parietaria judaica is one of the main causes of allergy in the Mediterranean area. The present study is designed to assess if P. judaica pollens contain bioactive compounds able to elicit a functional response in endothelial cells. We have demonstrated that addition of pollen extract to human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC-L) induces a modification of cell morphology, actin cytoskeletal rearrangements and an increase in endothelial cell permeability. We further showed that the treatment of endothelial cells with pollen extract causes an increase of E-selectin and VCAM-1 protein levels as well as an increase of IL-8 production. The stimulation of cell-cell adhesion molecules was paralleled by a dose-dependent increase of adhesion of polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) to HMVEC-L monolayer. Our results suggest for the first time that pollen affect directly endothelial cells (EC) modulating critical functions related to the inflammatory response.  相似文献

Pollen grains of Gramineae, Urticaceae, Compositae, Oleaceae and Cupressaceae represent the etiologic factors of the most common allergic diseases in Apulia. This study describes the relative frequency of allergic sensitization to pollen from Salsola kali (Chenopodiaceae), based on results obtained with skinprick tests, specific serum IgEs evaluation and nasal provocation tests. 23 out of 240 patients suffering of pollinosis resulted positive. It is suggested that these allergens should be taken in consideration during patients investigation in the Mediterranean area.  相似文献

Pollen data reported from the two monitoring stations of Locarno-Monti, on the southern slopes of the Alps, and Zurich on the northern slopes of the Alps, for the years 1989–1993 were compared with meteorological data from the corresponding locations and with the prevalence of pollinosis and frequency of specific pollen sensitization in patients with pollinosis. It was so discovered that the recorded quantity of allergenic pollen types (Alnus, Corylus, Betula, Fraxinus, Poaceae, Castaneae,Olea andArtemisia) south of the Alps is higher by a factor of 2.9 than that north of the Alps. These differences are due to the distinctly milder climate in the canton of Ticino (south of the Alps) showing higher annual mean temperatures, more sunshine duration and less precipitation days with higher amounts of precipitation. The allergological data show additionally that the summer pollinosis, caused byCastanea andOlea, is probably responsible for the differing prevalence of pollinosis at the two sites. Finally, we can summarize that in Switzerland pollen from Poaceae, Betulaceae and Oleacea are the most important for pollinosis.  相似文献
