Previous studies have demonstrated that substance P- (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide-like immunoreactivities (CGRP-LI) coexist in sensory nerve fibres in the guinea-pig carotid body and carotid sinus. In the present study the ultrastructure of these nerve fibres was investigated by means of single- and double-labelling immunocytochemistry. In both, carotid body and carotid sinus immunoreactive fibres were unmyelinated axons of small diameter (0.12-0.56 microns). At the subcellular level, SP- and CGRP-LI were colocalized in intra-axonal dense core vesicles, suggesting corelease and simultaneous action of these two compounds. SP/CGRP-LI nerve fibres within the carotid body were mainly found in the interparenchymal connective tissue, but also occurred in relationship to blood vessels and nests of glomus cells. Neither in the carotid body not in the carotid sinus, SP/CGRP-LI axons corresponded to the large terminals which are generally considered to represent the main chemoreceptor and baroreceptor endings, respectively. Thus, SP/CGRP-LI fibres either belong to the chemo- and baroreceptors of the C-fibre class or constitute a fibre population not directly involved in conduction of baro- and chemoreflexes.  相似文献

Summary The innervation of the major arteries and heart of the toad (Bufo marinus) was examined by use of glyoxylic acid-induced catecholamine fluorescence and peptide immunohistochemistry. All arteries possessed a moderate to dense plexus of adrenergic axons, which also showed neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity (NPY-LI). Some adrenergic axons in the intracardiac vagal trunks showed NPY-LI, but the varicose adrenergic axons innervating the cardiac muscle of the atria and ventricle, and the coronary blood vessels did not display NPY-LI. About half of the nerve cell bodies in the anterior sympathetic chain ganglia with dopamine--hydroxylase-LI (DBH-LI) also contained NPY-LI. The nerve cell bodies with DBH-LI alone were generally larger (median diameter 30 m) than those with both DBH-LI and NPY-LI (median diameter 20 m). Some cell bodies showing DBH-LI alone were surrounded by boutons with NPY-LI but not DBH-LI. Axons that displayed simultaneously both substance P-LI (SP-LI) and calcitonin gene-related peptide-LI (CGRP-LI) also formed a plexus around all arteries studied, being particularly dense around the mesenteric and pulmonary arteries. These axons are most likely sensory since SP-LI was reduced by capsaicin treatment, and nerve cell bodies with both SP-LI and CGRP-LI were found in dorsal root ganglia and the vagal ganglion. A dense plexus of axons showing somatostatin-LI was located around the pulmonary artery and its main intrapulmonary branches. A few nerves with vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-LI were found around the dorsal aorta and pulmonary artery. No perivascular nerves with enkephalin-LI were observed. Reversed-phase, high-pressure liquid chromatography of acid extracts of the large arteries showed that the major peaks of NPY-LI and SP-LI coeluted with porcine NPY (1–36) and synthetic SP (1–11), respectively. Thus, the location and structure of these peptides in perivascular nerves has been highly conserved during vertebrate evolution.  相似文献

Nitric oxide synthase in the rat carotid body and carotid sinus   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The participation of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the innervation of the rat carotid body and carotid sinus was investigated by means of NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry and NOS immunohistochemistry using antisera raised against purified neuronal NOS and a synthetic tridecapeptide. NOS was detected in 23% of neurons at the periphery of the carotid bodies. Some negative neurons were surrounded by NOS-positive terminals. NOS-containing varicose nerve fibres innervated the arterial vascular bed and, to a lesser extent, the islands of glomus cells. These fibres persisted after transection of the carotid sinus nerve and are probably derived from intrinsic neurons. Large NOS-positive axonal swellings in the wall of the carotid sinus were absent after transection of the sinus nerve, indicating their sensory origin. The results suggest a neuronal nitrergic control of blood flow, neuronal activity and chemoreception in the carotid body, and an intrinsic role of NO in the process of arterial baroreception.  相似文献

Neuroactive peptides, including the enkephalins (Met- and Leu-enkephalin; ME, LE) and substance P (SP) are known to be present in the mammalian carotid body, an arterial chemoreceptor organ sensitive to the O2, CO2 and pH levels in blood. The principal parenchymal (type I) cells of the organ, which receive sensory innervation from the carotid sinus nerve (CSN), have been shown to contain both ME and SP; SP is also present in CSN afferent fibers. In the present study, rabbits were exposed in a chamber to a physiological chemoreceptor stimulus (5% O2 in N2) for one hour, then anesthetized during surgical removal of both carotid bodies for later RIA measurement of ME and SP levels in the tissue; control animals were exposed to air in the chamber, but otherwise treated as the hypoxic animals. Both ME and SP levels were significantly reduced (approximately 40%) in the carotid bodies from hypoxic rabbits, compared to their normoxic controls. The results suggest that these neuroactive peptides are released from carotid body elements during physiological stimulation, and consequently may play a role in the transduction of chemosensory information between the type I cells and their apposed afferent terminals.  相似文献

The carotid body is a peripheral chemoreceptor that detects decreases in arterial pO2 and subsequently activates the carotid sinus nerve. The hypoxia-evoked activity of the carotid sinus nerve has been suggested to be modulated by glutamate. In the present study, we investigate the immunohistochemical localization of vesicular glutamate transporters in the carotid body of the rat. Vesicular glutamate transporter 2 (VGLUT2) labeling was closely associated with glomus cells immunoreactive to tyrosine hydroxylase but was not in the cytoplasm of these cells. The VGLUT2 immunoreactivity was observed within nerve endings that were immunoreactive to P2X3 and densely localized inside P2X3-immunoreactive axon terminals. These results suggest that VGLUT2 is localized in the afferent nerve terminals of the carotid body. Glutamate may be released from afferent nerve terminals to modulate the chemosensory activity of the carotid body.  相似文献

The innervation of the carotid body in the cat was studied by means of light- and electron-microscopic techniques. Sinus nerve resection, glossopharyngeal resection, bilateral cervical sympathectomy, excisions of two nerves, and injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OH-DA) were performed in different groups of animals. It was found that resection of the sinus nerve produces a rapid phase of degeneration of intralobular fibers and synaptic boutons, followed by a reinnervation with a progressive reappearance of these elements. This reinnervation is retarded by sympathectomy and prevented by 6-OH-DA. It is therefore concluded that reinnervation is due to collateral regeneration of nearby sympathetic fibers. Resection of the sinus nerve produces an increase in the number of argentaffin cells and dense-cored vesicles in the cytoplasm of principal cells. These findings suggest the existence of efferent synaptic contacts between this nerve and principal cells. Part of the intralobular fibers and synaptic boutons degenerate after bilateral sympathectomy demonstrating that sympathetic axons connect synaptically to the principal cells. Sympathetic fibers reach the carotid body, not only from branches of the cervical plexuses but also from fibers running in the adventitia of the common carotid artery, and via glossopharyngeal and sinus nerves. The vagus nerve contributes a few fibers to the parenchymal lobules of the carotid body.  相似文献

Substance P (SP) is abundant in the carotid sinus nerve (CSN) and has been implicated in baro- and chemoreceptor reflexes. We examined the effect of SP on blood pressure, heart rate, phrenic nerve activity, hindlimb perfusion pressure, and cardiac contractile strength in urethane-anesthetized rabbits with bilaterally cut cervical sympathetic, vagus, and aortic depressor nerves. Retrograde simultaneous injection of SP (0.5-2.7 micrograms/kg in 0.2-0.3 ml saline) into both carotid sinus areas via the internal carotid arteries decreased blood pressure (by 56%), heart rate (by 13%), cardiac contractility (by 25%) and phrenic nerve activity (by 77%). The effect on hindlimb perfusion pressure was variable. There was both a reflex effect and direct hindlimb vasodilation. In another group of rabbits, the carotid sinus areas were vascularly isolated and perfused with SP (0.19 micrograms/min dissolved in Locke's solution) or Locke's solution alone for 5 min. While carotid sinus perfusion pressure was maintained in the range of 80-120 mmHg, mean arterial blood pressure, heart rate, and unit activity from the CSN were recorded. SP increased the activity of 11 of 18 baroreceptor fibers and inhibited all of 20 chemoreceptor fibers. SP decreased mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate, but the changes were less than those obtained with injection of SP into nonisolated carotid sinus arteries because systemic effects of SP, which in some cases counteracted the reflex effects, were eliminated.  相似文献

Role of substance P in hypercapnic excitation of carotid chemoreceptors   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Experiments were performed on 17 anesthetized, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated cats to evaluate the importance of substance P-like peptide (SP) on the carotid body responses to CO2. Single or paucifiber carotid chemoreceptor activity was recorded from the peripheral end of the cut carotid sinus nerve. In eight of the cats the influence of SP on hyperoxic hypercapnic responses was studied. While the animals breathed 100% O2, intracarotid infusion of SP (1 microgram.kg-1.min-1, 3 min) increased chemoreceptor activity by +4.8 +/- 0.3 impulses/s. After SP infusion, inhalation of CO2 in O2 caused a rapid increase in activity that reached a peak and then adapted to a lower level, whereas similar levels of CO2 before SP caused only a gradual increase in carotid body discharge rate without any overshoot in response. Furthermore SP significantly increased the magnitude and slope of the CO2 response. In the other nine cats the effect of intracarotid infusion of an SP antagonist, [D-Pro2,D-Trp7,9] SP (10-15 micrograms.kg-1.min-1), on carotid body responses to 1) hyperoxic hypercapnia (7% CO2-93% O2), 2) isocapnic hypoxia (11% O2-89% N2), and 3) hypoxic hypercapnia (11% O2-7% CO2-82% N2) was examined. SP antagonist had no effect on carotid body response to hyperoxic hypercapnia but significantly attenuated the chemoreceptor excitation caused by isocapnic hypoxia and hypoxic hypercapnia. These results suggest that 1) SP may play an important role in carotid body responses to hypoxia but not to CO2, and 2) the mechanisms of stimulation of the carotid body by hypercapnia and by hypoxia differ.  相似文献

Summary It is well known that carbonic anhydrase plays an important role in the physiological responses of carotidbody chemoreceptors to hypercapnia. Nevertheless the precise location of the enzyme within the carotid body has been a matter of controversy for many years. Using the Hansson method we found histochemical evidence that this enzyme is localized in type I cells. Type II cells and nerve terminals did not show enzymatic activity. These results allow us to define the carotid body as a secondary receptor in the context of the acidic hypothesis of transduction in the carotid body.

Effects of atriopeptin II (APII) on the carotid sinus baroreflex in anesthetized rats and on the sinus nerve afferent activity in the anesthetized rabbits were investigated. The results were as follows: (1) By perfusing the isolated left carotid sinus with APII (1 microgram/ml) in anesthetized rats (n = 10), the threshold pressure (TP) of the carotid baroreflex did not show any change, while the equilibrium pressure (EP), the saturation pressure (SP) and the operating range (OR) were decreased from 101 +/- 2.8 to 95 +/- 2.0 mmHg (P less than 0.05), 202 +/- 5.2 to 168 +/- 6.1 mmHg (P less than 0.001) and 128 +/- 5.5 to 93 +/- 6.3 mmHg (P less than 0.001), respectively. The function curve of the baroreflex was shifted to the left and downward with a peak slope (PS) increased during perfusing with APII. In contrast, by perfusing the carotid sinus with sodium nitroprusside (NP, 0.5 micrograms/ml), TP and EP remained unchanged, whereas SP and OR were increased from 188 +/- 6.4 to 218 +/- 6.0 mmHg (n = 6, P less than 0.01) and from 107 +/- 6.9 to 132 +/- 7.6 mmHg (P less than 0.05), respectively. The function curve of the baroreflex and its PS were not affected by NP. The sinus nerve afferent activity was quite stable with the perfusion of carotid sinus at constant intrasinus pressure (ISP) in the rabbits (n = 6) and increased during the elevation of ISP.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Summary A light and electron microscopic study was undertaken on the baroreceptor axon terminals in the carotid sinus of guinea pigs and mice, using serial semithin and thin sections.Together with their enveloping Schwann cells, numerous lanceolate axon terminals are organized into a well-defined discoid end organ, referred to as the baroreceptor unit. Baroreceptor units measure 100 to 150 m in diameter and are arranged in a hexagonal pattern. These end organs represent free branched lanceolate mechanoreceptors of complex type (Andres and von Düring, 1973) which belong to the main group of stretch receptors. In the guinea pig the lanceolate terminals enter the media and approach the innermost layers near the intima. In the mouse the terminals are seen to spread in the adventitia and along the medio-adventitial border. Only a few of them penetrate the external elastic layer. Species differences concerning the localization and extent of these visceral mechanoreceptors are discussed, as well as the modified architecture of the sinus wall in the receptor area (elastic segment).Lanceolate terminals form beaded varicosities which are equipped with finger-like or lamellar axoplasmic protrusions. These projections contain a well-differentiated receptor matrix. They are attached to collagen and elastic fibers. The varicosities include densely packed mitochondria, neurotubules, profiles of axoplasmic reticulum, clear and granular vesicles, and striking accumulations of glycogen particles, lamellated bodies and lysosomes. Four types of varicosities are discerned according to their main axoplasmic components. Various types of these varicosities occur within an individual lanceolate terminal. The adrenergic innervation of the carotid sinus was studied by fluorescence histochemistry. In guinea pigs a multilayered wide-meshed plexus of fluorescent fibers occurs in the adventitia where it is closely related to baroreceptor stem fibers. However, adrenergic axons do not enter the media. In mice fluorescent fibers are extremely rare in the adventitia of the carotid sinus.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Drs.h.c. W. The immunohistochemical study revealed tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), dopamine -hydroxylase (DBH), phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PNMT), serotonin, glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) and -aminobutyric acid (GABA) immunoreactivities in the mouse carotid body. TH and DBH immunoreactivities were found in almost all chief cells and a few ganglion cells, and in relatively numerous varicose nerve fibers of the carotid body. The histofluorescence microscopy showed catecholamine fluorescence in almost all chief cells. However, no PNMT immunoreactivity was observed in the carotid body. Serotonin, GAD and GABA immunoreactivities were also seen in almost all chief cells of the carotid body. From combined immunohistochemistry and fluorescence histochemistry, catecholamine and serotonin or catecholamine and GABA were colocalized in almost all chief cells. Thus, these findings suggest that noradrenaline, serotonin and GABA may be synthesized and co-exist in almost all chief cells of the mouse carotid body and may play roles in chemoreceptive functions.  相似文献

The distribution of nerve fibres immunoreactive to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) was investigated by immunohistochemistry in nipples and mammary glands from lactating and non-lactating rats and compared to the immunoreactivity of other neuropeptides including substance P (SP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and somatostatin (SOM). The study revealed an extensive innervation of the mammary nipples, in which CGRP-immunoreactive (IR) nerve fibres were abundantly present in the epidermis, dermal connective tissue and intralobular connective tissue of the mammary gland parenchyma. Several of the dermal CGRP-IR fibres seemed to follow blood vessels, or formed ringlet-like structures. The latter were mostly observed in the dermal connective tissue of the nipple from the lactating rat and may have a mechanoreceptive function, e.g. for the suckling stimuli. The location of SP-IR appeared to be comparable to CGRP-IR, but in fewer fibres. Dense NPY-IR networks of nerve fibres were closely associated with the fascicles of smooth musculature in the core of the nipple base. In contrast, VIP-IR fibres were only sparsely present, and SOM-IR was not detected in the mammary nipples. The immunoreactive content of CGRP and SP was determined by radioimmunoassays. The total amount of immunoreactive CGRP was significantly higher in the nipples from the pregnant and the lactating rats when compared to SP. The maximum concentration of CGRP (65.9±4.0 pmol/g) measured in the nipples of the pregnant (day 10) rats exceeded almost ninefold the maximum concentration of SP (7.7±2.0 pmol/g). Thus, the immunoreactive content of CGRP in the nipples confirmed the immunohistochemical observations, and the present results strongly suggest that CGRP is a major neuropeptide in the rat nipple.  相似文献

Summary The present work was undertaken to determine by immunocytochemical methods which of the putative enteric neurotransmitters are contained in axons supplying the guinea-pig taenia coli and what proportion of axons is accounted for by the presence of these substances. Numerous fibres displayed immunoreactivity for dynorphin (DYN), enkephalin (ENK), -aminobutyric acid (GABA), nitric oxide synthase (NOS), substance P (SP) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), but, in contrast to other gut regions, fibres showing immunoreactivity for gastrin-releasing peptide, galanin and neuropeptide Y were rare in the taenia. Fibres reactive for calbindin, calcitonin gene-related peptide, cholecystokinin, 5-hydroxytryptamine and somatostatin were also rare. Tyrosine hydroxylase-like immunoreactivity (TH-LI) was present in numerous fibres that disappeared after extrinsic denervation, a procedure that did not detectably affect any of the other major groups of fibres. Simultaneous staining of extrinsically denervated preparations revealed that SP-LI and VIP-LI were located in separate fibres, and ultrastructural studies showed these to be 58% and 33% of intrinsic fibres supplying the muscle. Immunoreactivity for the general marker, neuron-specific enolase, was located in 95–98% of axons. ENK-LI and DYN-LI were in the same axons, and similar proportions of the fibres with either SP-LI or VIP-LI, about 85%, contained immunoreactivity for ENK and DYN. All VIP-LI fibres, but no SP-LI fibres, were reactive for NOS. The results imply that the taenia of the guinea-pig caecum is innervated by two major groups of enteric neurons: (i) excitatory neurons that contain ACh, SP, other tachykinins, and, in most cases, DYN-LI and ENK-LI; and (ii) inhibitory neurons that contain NOS-LI, VIP-LI, in most cases, the two opioids and, quite probably, ATP as a transmitter. GABA-LI is contained in a smaller population of intrinsic axons. Even though the taenia represents one of the simplest tissues for examining transmission from enteric neurons to intestinal muscle, it shares some of the complexity of other regions, in that four major axon types supply the muscle and both the enteric excitatory and enteric inhibitory neurons contain multiple transmitters.  相似文献

Summary Remarkably large amounts of adenine nucleotides are identified in type I-cells of the carotid body by fluorescence microscopy (labelling with quinacrine) and electron microscopy (uranaffin reaction). At the fine-structural level the matrix material of specific granules displays enhanced electron density after fixation with uranium ions. It is suggested that ATP is stored within specific granules in addition to catecholamines and proteins. Adenine nucleotides should be considered as one of the secretion products of the chief cells in the carotid body, being capable locally of influencing vascular flow and/or chemoreceptor terminals.Histochemical analysis of the activities leading to a splitting of adenine nucleotides shows a high reactivity with ATP or ADP as substrates. Reaction products are confined to the entire vascular bed of the carotid body. Using AMP or -glycerophosphate as substrate, practically no phosphohydrolytic activity could be detected within the carotid body. Thus, the phosphatases are adequate to remove ATP and ADP, but not to form adenosine. This study was supported by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Nr. Bo 525/3  相似文献

Summary In a histochemical study of intrinsic cardiac ganglia of the guinea-pig in whole-mount preparations, it was found that some 70–80% of the neurons express aspects of the catecholaminergic phenotype. These neurons have an uptake mechanism for L-DOPA, and contain the enzymes for converting L-DOPA, (but not D-DOPA) to dopamine and noradrenaline, i.e. aromatic L-aminoacid decarboxylase and dopamine -hydroxylase. Monoamine oxidase is also present within some of the neurons. In these respects, the neurons resemble noradrenergic neurons of sympathetic ganglia, so we refer to them as intrinsic cardiac amine-handling neurons. However, these neurons do not contain tyrosine hydroxylase and show little or no histochemically detectable uptake of -methyldopa, dopamine or noradrenaline, even after depletion of endogenous stores of amines by pre-treatment with reserpine. Noradrenergic fibres from the sympathetic chain form pericellular baskets around nerve cell bodies. The uptake of L-DOPA into nerve cell bodies is not prevented by treatment with 6-hydroxydopamine sufficient to cause transmitter-depletion or degeneration of the extrinsic noradrenergic fibres. Such degeneration experiments suggest that axons of the amine-handling neurons project to cardiac muscle, blood vessels and other intrinsic neurons. The cardiac neurons do not show any immunohistochemically detectable serotonergic characteristics; there is no evidence for uptake of the precursors L-tryptophan and 5-hydroxytryptophan or 5-HT itself, whereas the extrinsic noradrer ergic nerve fibres within the ganglia can take up 5-HT when it is applied in high concentrations.Abbreviations AChE acetylcholinesterase - DBH-IR dopamine -hydroxylase-like immunoreactivity - L-DOPA L-dihydroxyphenylalamine - 5-HT-IR 5-hydroxytryptamine-like immunoreactivity - 6-OHDA 6-hydroxydopamine - methyldopa L--methyl-dihydroxyphenylalanine - MAO monoamine oxidase - NPY neuropeptide Y - SIF small intensely fluorescent cells - TH-IR tyrosine hydroxylase-like immunoreactivity - VIP vasoactive intestinal polypeptide  相似文献

Substance P (SP)-, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)- and neuropeptide Y (NPY)-immunoreactive nerve fibers were examined in experimental sciatic nerve-end neuromas in the rat with immunohistochemical techniques. At 1-3 days after nerve ligation and section of the sciatic nerve there was an accumulation of SP-like immunoreactivity (SP-LI). Six days after the lesion there was, however, a marked reduction and the neuromas remained virtually depleted from SP-LI at survival times between 8 days and 3 months. CGRP-LI was strong at 1-5 days post-operatively. By 8 days, CGRP-LI was reduced, but a large number of axons were still immunoreactive, and remained immunolabelled up to 3 months. CGRP-LI nerve fibers formed endbulbs, and appeared to grow in both anterograde and retrograde directions. Fine fibers sprouts were first observed at 8 days, but preterminal branching in neuromas aged less than a month was uncommon. At early stages (1-3 days) after ligation, there was a marked accumulation of NPY-LI proximal to the nerve constriction. NPY-LI was reduced from 5 days and on, but many fibers remained NPY-positive and their growth pattern through proximal and distal neuroma segments could be determined. The present results thus may indicate a differential effect of nerve injury on neuropeptide expression: immunohistochemically detectable SP-LI rapidly disappears from sciatic nerve fibers trapped in nerve-end neuromas, but CGRP-LI and NPY-LI remain and are useful as neuroanatomical markers for two subclasses of sprouting axons. Furthermore, the findings suggest that both CGRP and NPY, but not SP, could be involved in ectopic electrical activity in experimental neuromas.  相似文献

Summary The coexistence of serotonin and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in neuroepithelial bodies of the bandicoot, Isoodon macrourus, has been examined using immunocytochemistry at the light- and electronmicroscope levels. The avidin-biotin technique of antigen localisation was used initially to identify serotonin-like and CGRP-like immunoreactivity (-LI). Serotonin-LI and CGRP-LI were found in neuroepithelial cells in the lungs of 30-day-old bandicoots. CGRP-LI could also be demonstrated in nerve fibres associated with some neuroepithelial bodies. The protein A-gold technique of antigen localisation was used to label neuroepithelial cells and nerve fibres at the subcellular level. Serotonin-LI and CGRP-LI were observed in the same dense-cored vesicles of most neuroepithelial cells; however, some neuroepithelial cells were shown to possess serotonin-LI without CGRP-LI. Nerve fibres immediately adjacent to neuroepithelial bodies exhibited mainly CGRP-LI. These results show that serotonin-LI and CGRP-LI are present in neuroepithelial cells of the bandicoot in the same secretory vesicles. This pattern of co-localisation may reflect co-ordinated or synergistic actions of these two neuroactive substances.  相似文献

Summary The proximal truncus arteriosus of the lizard Trachydosaurus rugosus was studied with light-, fluorescence and electron-microscopical techniques. Three vessels comprised the truncus: the pulmonary, left aortic, and caroticoaortic arteries. Right and left truncal nerves, each derived from the ipsilateral vagus nerve, innervated the truncus, particularly its proximal 3 mm.Ultrastructurally, the nerves had a variety of appearances: some were clearly adrenergic, c-type or p-type. A number of profiles contained large numbers of mitochondria and were classified as sensory. Some profiles defied exact classification, having characteristics common to two different types of profile.Within the outer medial layers, profiles up to 7 m in diameter were found. These contained large numbers of mitochondria, myelin bodies and structures intermediate between the two. In addition, the profiles contained large amounts of glycogen and small numbers of vesicles. These nerve fibres were classified as baroreceptors, since they closely resemble carotid sinus and aortic arch baroreceptors in mammals.Large numbers of chromaffin cells were found, particularly in the common wall of the pulmonary and left aortic arteries. Many of these cells emitted a long tapering process, which sometimes entered a nearby nerve bundle. Sensory, p-type and c-type profiles, but not adrenergic profiles, made extensive close contacts with chromaffin cells.  相似文献
