Sturgeon populations in the Danube River have experienced severe decline during the last several decades, mostly due to the poorly regulated fishery, river fragmentation and water pollution. This study focuses on gaining better understanding of sturgeon life history primarily by addressing the assessment of microelement accumulation in sturgeon pectoral fin rays, especially of strontium and calcium, as a method that can reveal migration patterns of anadromous sturgeons. Analysis was performed on pectoral fin samples of three anadromous Danube sturgeon species (beluga, Russian sturgeon and stellate sturgeon) by the use of a Nuclear Microprobe technique. The most frequent pattern in analyzed samples was represented by a low Sr:Ca ratio in the innermost annuli, followed by an increased ratio in the middle annuli segment, and often with a decreased ratio in the outermost annuli. Probability density estimate has revealed three distinguished maxima of the Sr:Ca ratio, 7.08 × 10−3, 8.98 × 10−3 and 9.90 × 10−3, which might correspond, respectively, to fresh, brackish and saltwater. Although the analysis of the Sr:Ca ratio in sturgeon pectoral fin rays has revealed changes that might indicate probable migration between habitats with different water salinity, further studies are needed for improvement of this method. Sturgeon (Acipenser baerii and A. gueldenstaedtii) specimens, native to the northern hemisphere, were reported in different environments of the La Plata Basin (South America). The objectives of this study were to provide the first insights into the natal origin and habitat use of these sturgeon species in the La Plata Basin through geochemical analysis (87Sr/86Sr) of fin spines and to review historical catch reports. Spine core-to-edge 87Sr/86Sr ratios were measured by LA-MC-ICPMS. A Quadratic Discriminant Analysis model based on water 87Sr/86Sr baseline of the La Plata Basin was run to infer the natal origin. The isotopic profiles indicate a common origin, compatible with the location of the fish farms in the Uruguay Basin. The A. baerii isotopic time series suggested that the fish moved towards the Paraná Basin months before capture, while A. gueldenstaedtii would have survived a longer time (perhaps years). Seventeen reports of sturgeons were recorded and preserved in museum collections between 1998 and 2020. Sturgeons were collected from Río de la Plata Estuary, Paraná and Uruguay basins and Atlantic coastal lagoons. It is recommended to closely monitor sturgeon catches, paying special attention to the appearance of specimens of reproductive age, in order to generate management and management plans if necessary.  相似文献

Stock enhancement efforts have been used to aid in increasing dwindling population levels of Lake Sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens, that are currently of conservation concern. Consistent monitoring of stock enhanced fisheries requires a reliable and reproducible method to mark stocked fish such that the success of such programs can be determined. Recently, stable isotopic marking of hard structures in fish has been developed in a variety of species, however, optimal marking conditions are less well understood. In this study the metabolism of strontium in juvenile Lake Sturgeon and determined parameters for optimisation of marking success in the fin ray were examined. Using radioactive strontium (85Sr), whole body influx and efflux rates of strontium were 3.02 ± 0.364 pmol h?1 g?1 (mean ± standard error) and 0.04 ± 0.007 pmol h?1 g?1, respectively. Furthermore, short‐term accumulation of 85Sr in a variety of tissues was assessed and found to be greatest in the fin ray. Biological half‐life of the stable isotope 86Sr was shortest in muscle and longest in the fin ray tissue. Immersion and length of immersion timing had positive relationships with marking success. Additionally, the signature remained in 75% of fish analysed 550 days post‐mark. Data suggest that marking success was determined by duration of immersion in the mark and concentration of the mark introduced to the water.  相似文献

Assessment of anadromous northern-form Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma malma in the Western Canadian Arctic requires reliable methods for estimating ages. Additionally, conservation efforts warrant determining whether fin rays provide a non-lethal alternative to otoliths. Precision and bias of whole and sectioned otoliths, and sectioned pectoral and pelvic fin rays were examined. Two age readers with different levels of experience ageing this species read each structure three times. Coefficient of variation (CV) was calculated to measure precision, and age bias plots were created for each method of preparation/structure within and between readers. The experienced reader demonstrated the highest precision with sectioned otoliths (CV = 1.6 %) followed by whole otoliths (CV = 4.2 %) while pectoral and pelvic fins were the lowest, CV = 7.7 % and 7.5 %, respectively. The age bias plot showed little difference between whole and sectioned otoliths, although greater imprecision/bias was evident for whole otoliths at age ≥9. Compared to otoliths, fin rays produced younger age estimates starting at 5 years; however, pelvic fins were more biased towards younger estimates than pectoral fins. The less experienced reader had greater inconsistencies, tending to overage younger and underage older samples for all methods compared to the more experienced reader, underscoring the importance of experience when estimating age for this species. We conclude that both types of fin rays are a poor non-lethal alternative to otoliths for fish ≥5 years and recommend an experienced ager could use whole otoliths up to age 8 and sectioned otoliths for fish ≥9 years (>500 mm fork length).  相似文献

Ray‐finned fishes are notable for having flexible fins that allow for the control of fluid forces. A number of studies have addressed the muscular control, kinematics, and hydrodynamics of flexible fins, but little work has investigated just how flexible ray‐finned fish fin rays are, and how flexibility affects their response to environmental perturbations. Analysis of pectoral fin rays of bluegill sunfish showed that the more proximal portion of the fin ray is unsegmented while the distal 60% of the fin ray is segmented. We examined the range of motion and curvatures of the pectoral fin rays of bluegill sunfish during steady swimming, turning maneuvers, and hovering behaviors and during a vortex perturbation impacting the fin during the fin beat. Under normal swimming conditions, curvatures did not exceed 0.029 mm?1 in the proximal, unsegmented portion of the fin ray and 0.065 mm?1 in the distal, segmented portion of the fin ray. When perturbed by a vortex jet traveling at approximately 1 ms?1 (67 ± 2.3 mN s.e. of force at impact), the fin ray underwent a maximum curvature of 9.38 mm?1. Buckling of the fin ray was constrained to the area of impact and did not disrupt the motion of the pectoral fin during swimming. Flexural stiffness of the fin ray was calculated to be 565 × 10?6 Nm2. In computational fluid dynamic simulations of the fin‐vortex interaction, very flexible fin rays showed a combination of attraction and repulsion to impacting vortex dipoles. Due to their small bending rigidity (or flexural stiffness), impacting vortices transferred little force to the fin ray. Conversely, stiffer fin rays experienced rapid small‐amplitude oscillations from vortex impacts, with large impact forces all along the length of the fin ray. Segmentation is a key design feature of ray‐finned fish fin rays, and may serve as a means of making a flexible fin ray out of a rigid material (bone). Threespine stickleback most often have 10 pectoral fin rays, and it seems to be a highly canalized trait. We observed an unusually high frequency of stickleback with 11 pectoral fin rays in a population recently isolated from the marine environment in a freshwater lagoon in Iceland. These new morphologies may be beneficial for the fish in the new habitat but may disappear because of strong canalizing selection for the typical 10 pectoral fin rays.Co-ordinating editor: Kaitala  相似文献

Southern smelts (Retropinna spp.) in coastal rivers of Australia are facultatively diadromous, with populations potentially containing individuals with diadromous or wholly freshwater life histories. The presence of diadromous individuals is expected to reduce genetic structuring between river basins due to larval dispersal via the sea. We use otolith chemistry to distinguish between diadromous and nondiadromous life histories and population genetics to examine interbasin connectivity resulting from diadromy. Otolith strontium isotope (87Sr:86Sr) transects identified three main life history patterns: amphidromy, freshwater residency and estuarine/marine residency. Despite the potential for interbasin connectivity via larval mixing in the marine environment, we found unprecedented levels of genetic structure for an amphidromous species. Strong hierarchical structure along putative taxonomic boundaries was detected, along with highly structured populations within groups using microsatellites (FST = 0.046–0.181), and mtDNA (ΦST = 0.498–0.816). The presence of strong genetic subdivision, despite the fact that many individuals reside in saline water during their early life history, appears incongruous. However, analysis of multielemental signatures in the otolith cores of diadromous fish revealed strong discrimination between river basins, suggesting that diadromous fish spend their early lives within chemically distinct estuaries rather than the more homogenous marine environment, thus avoiding dispersal and maintaining genetic structure.  相似文献

Atlantic sturgeon migrate between ocean and freshwater habitats to spawn, and juveniles spend several years in fresh/brackish water before returning to the ocean. Because strontium/calcium (Sr/Ca) ratios are diagnostic for freshwater and marine environments, we examined the utility of energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) to quantify Sr/Ca ratios of Atlantic sturgeon pectoral fin spines. Atlantic sturgeon spines from wild adults and experimental juveniles were analyzed along a linear transect from the primordium to the outermost point. To verify the technique hatchery juvenile Atlantic sturgeon were held in experimental tanks at <0.5, 13?C15, or 33?C35?? and sampled after 5?months. Sr/Ca ratios of experimental hatchery fish increased with salinity, and Sr/Ca ratios in wild adults varied predictably along the measurement transect. However, the ratio decreased in the outermost region of the spine in mature fish collected during a return to freshwater for spawning. Therefore EDXRF is a useful tool to track individual movements of Atlantic sturgeons and other diadromous fish.  相似文献

Dam construction is a major driver of ecological change in freshwater ecosystems. Fish populations have been shown to diverge in response to different flow velocity habitats, yet adaptations of fish populations to river and reservoir habitats created by dams remains poorly understood. We aimed to evaluate divergence of morphological traits and prolonged swimming speed performance between lotic and lentic populations of Australian smelt Retropinna semoni and quantify the relationship between prolonged swimming speed performance and morphology. Prolonged swimming speed performance was assessed for 15 individuals from each of three river and two reservoir populations of R. semoni using the critical swimming speed test (Ucrit). Body shape was characterized using geometric morphometrics, which was combined with fin aspect ratios and standard length to assess morphological divergence among the five populations. Best subsets model-selection was used to identify the morphological traits that best explain Ucrit variation among individuals. Our results indicate R. semoni from river populations had significantly higher prolonged swimming speed performance (Ucrit = 46.61 ± 0.98 cm s−1) than reservoir conspecifics (Ucrit = 35.57 ± 0.83 cm s−1; F1,74 = 58.624, Z = 35.938, P < 0.001). Similarly, R. semoni sampled from river populations had significantly higher fin aspect ratios (ARcaudal = 1.71 ± 0.04 and 1.29 ± 0.02 respectively; F(1,74) = 56.247, Z = 40.107, P < 0.001; ARpectoral = 1.85 ± 0.03 and 1.33 ± 0.02 respectively; F(1,74) = 7.156, Z = 4.055, P < 0.01). Best-subset analyses revealed Ucrit was most strongly correlated with pectoral and caudal fin aspect ratios (R2adj = 0.973, AICc = 41.54). Body shape, however, was subject to a three-way interaction among population, habitat and sex effects (F3,74 = 1.038. Z = 1.982; P < 0.05). Thus sexual dimorphism formed a significant component of unique and complex variation in body shape among populations from different habitat types. This study revealed profound effects of human-altered flow environments on locomotor morphology and its functional link to changes in swimming performance of a common freshwater fish. While past studies have indicated body shape may be an important axis for divergence between lotic and lentic populations of several freshwater fishes, fin aspect ratios were the most important predictor of swimming speed in our study. Differences in body morphology here were inconsistent between river and reservoir populations, suggesting this aspect of phenotype may be more strongly influenced by other factors such as predation and sexual dimorphism.  相似文献

Well-preserved fossils of the Late Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway (WIS) of North America have been analyzed for Sr concentration and Sr and O isotopes in order to decipher paleosalinities and paleotemperatures. The samples are from four biofacies within the Seaway (late Maastrichtian): offshore Interior (Pierre Shale), nearshore Interior (Fox Hills Formation), brackish (reduced salinity; Fox Hills Formation) and freshwater (Hell Creek Formation). Samples were also obtained from the Severn Formation of Maryland (considered to be representative of the open ocean). All biofacies (except the freshwater) are demonstrably within the Jeletzkytes nebrascensis ammonite zone (<1 Ma duration). The 87Sr/86Sr ratios show significant and systematic decreases from marine (mean±1 S.D.=0.707839±0.000024) to brackish facies (mean±1 S.D.=0.707677±0.000036), consistent with dilution by freshwater with a lower 87Sr/86Sr ratio than seawater. Such variation disallows using the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of fossil shell material to assign ages to fossils from the Late Cretaceous WIS without knowledge of the salinity in which the organism grew. The Sr isotope ratios for scaphitid ammonites within a single biofacies are similar to each other and different from those for scaphites in other biofacies, implying that these organisms are restricted in their distribution during life. The 87Sr/86Sr values of freshwater unionid mussels range widely and are not compatible with the freshwater endmember 87Sr/86Sr ratio required by the trend in 87Sr/86Sr vs. biofacies established from the other samples. Paleosalinities for the biofacies are estimated to range from 35‰ in the open marine to a minimum of 20‰ in the brackish, based on the presence of cephalopods in all four facies and the known salinity tolerance of modern cephalopods. Producing reasonable 87Sr/86Sr values for the freshwater endmember of a 87Sr/86Sr vs. 1/[Sr] plot requires a Sr concentration 0.2-0.5 that of seawater for the dominant freshwater input to the WIS. Such high Sr concentrations (relative to seawater) are not observed in modern rivers, and we suggest that the brackish environment in the WIS arose through the mixing of freshwater and seawater in a nearshore aquifer system. Reactions of the solution with aquifer solids in this ‘subterranean estuary’ [Moore, Mar. Chem. 65 (1999) 111-125] produced brackish water with the Sr concentration and isotopic composition recorded in the brackish biofacies. δ18O values of the fossils show decreases from the marine to brackish biofacies consistent with increasing temperatures (from ∼13 to 23°C) or, if temperatures were relatively constant, to a decrease in the δ18O of the water in which the shell formed. The latter interpretation is consistent with less-than-fully marine salinities in the nearshore biofacies, but both changes in temperature and the isotopic composition of the water may have occurred in this environment.  相似文献

Spotted Gar (Lepisosteus oculatus), a species listed as Threatened under the Canadian Species at Risk Act (SARA) was collected during May and June, 2007 from several sites in Rondeau Bay, a shallow coastal wetland of Lake Erie. The first pectoral fin ray was removed from 78 individuals to age the fish and to determine individual growth characteristics. To assess the validity of using pectoral rays to age Spotted Gar, we compared techniques (otoliths, branchiostegal rays and pectoral rays) for ten individuals captured in southwestern Michigan. Agreement between readers and amongst the three structures was high; thus aging of Spotted Gar using sectioned pectoral rays is an effective method. Rondeau Bay specimens varied in age from 3 to 10 years and from 515 to 761 mm total length. Regression analysis of length vs. age data was calculated to be $ {\hbox{y}} = {19}.{\hbox{217x}} + {491}.{19}\left( {{{\hbox{R}}^{{2}}} = 0.{22}} \right) $ . The low R 2 value is attributed to having males and females, which differ in growth rates, combined. Growth rates of Rondeau Bay specimens were compared to a Louisiana population using ANCOVA. No significant difference was found in the rate of growth between these populations; however, condition was low as compared to a standard weight equation. This may lead to lower fecundity, contributing to the species?? rarity in Canada.  相似文献

A new cave‐dwelling fish Triplophysa luochengensis is described based on specimens collected from a karst cave in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, that is interconnected to the Hongshui River drainage. The species can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of characters: eyes degenerated, anal fin with six branched rays, caudal fin with 16–17 branched rays, pectoral‐fin length 72·4–95·8% of the distance between pectoral‐fin origin and pelvic‐fin origin, lateral head length 26·2–28·2% of standard length (LS), eye diameter 7·5–8·6 of LS, body covered by sparse scales, lateral line complete and 7–8 pre‐operculo‐mandibular pores. Patterns of migration and habitat use in diadromous fishes can be highly variable among individuals. Most investigations into diadromous movement patterns have been restricted to populations in regulated rivers, and little information exists for those in unregulated catchments. We quantified movements of migratory barramundi Lates calcarifer (Bloch) in two large unregulated rivers in northern Australia using both elemental (Sr/Ba) and isotope ((87)Sr/(86)Sr) ratios in aragonitic ear stones, or otoliths. Chemical life history profiles indicated significant individual variation in habitat use, particularly among chemically distinct freshwater habitats within a catchment. A global zoning algorithm was used to quantify distinct changes in chemical signatures across profiles. This algorithm identified between 2 and 6 distinct chemical habitats in individual profiles, indicating variable movement among habitats. Profiles of (87)Sr/(86)Sr ratios were notably distinct among individuals, with highly radiogenic values recorded in some otoliths. This variation suggested that fish made full use of habitats across the entire catchment basin. Our results show that unrestricted movement among freshwater habitats is an important component of diadromous life histories for populations in unregulated systems.  相似文献

δ18OP values and 87Sr/86Sr ratios were determined on disarticulated xenacanthiform, hybodontid and ctenacanthid shark tooth material from several Early Permian (Sakmarian–Kungurian) continental bone beds of northern Texas and southern Oklahoma as well as from the marine Middle Permian (Roadian) of northern Arizona. The δ18OP values derived from the teeth of bone beds are in the range of 17.6–23.5‰ VSMOW, and are mostly depleted in 18O by 0.5–5‰ relative to proposed coeval marine δ18OP values. This indicates an adaptation to freshwater habitats on the Early Permian coastal plain by several sharks. Distinctly higher δ18OP values from two bone beds are attributed to significant evaporative enrichment in 18O in flood plain ponds. 87Sr/86Sr ratios of around 0.71077 are notably more radiogenic than 87Sr/86Sr of contemporaneous seawater. In contrast, the isotopic composition of teeth from the marine Kaibab Formation is characterised by low δ18OP values in the range of 13.4–15.6‰ VSMOW while 87Sr/86Sr ratios of around 0.70821 are closer to the Roadian seawater value. The distinctly depleted δ18OP values cannot be readily explained by fluvially affected freshening in a nearshore marine environment, so a diagenetic alteration of the Kaibab material seems to be more likely, excluding it from further interpretation.  相似文献

We evaluated the morphological, distributional, and genetic characteristics of the freshwater sculpin, Cottus pollux, in Kyushu Island, Japan. Based on pectoral fin ray number, the sculpins inhabiting 30 rivers were divided into two types [modes 13 (M13) and 15 (M15)]. We evaluated four environmental parameters: length of main river (L-MR), average gradient of main river (G-MR), distance from sampling site to river mouth (D-SM), and gradient around sampling site (G-S), and compared the two types. L-MR, D-SM, and G-S were significantly larger for the rivers that contained M13 fish than for those containing M15 fish. M13 individuals were distributed in the upstream areas of large river systems, suggesting a fluvial life history, whereas M15 individuals were distributed in the downstream areas of small river systems, indicating an amphidromous life history. We conducted phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial 12S rRNA [788 base pair (bp)] and control regions (386 bp). Mitochondrial DNA analysis showed that both M13 and M15 groups were genetically of C. pollux middle-egg type (ME). Our findings proposed the hypothesis that C. pollux ME in Kyushu Island exhibits dimorphism in both morphological and distributional traits. Additionally, haplotype distribution indicated that the fluvial M13 populations had higher genetic specificity in each river in contrast to the existence of one genetic group of amphidromous M15 individuals in Kyushu Island.  相似文献

A new goby species, Stiphodon niraikanaiensis, is described on the basis of three specimens (two females and one male) collected from a freshwater stream in Okinawa Island, Japan. This species can be distinguished from its congeners by nine soft rays in the second dorsal fin, 16 rays in the pectoral fin, a pointed first dorsal fin in male, the premaxilla with 46–50 tricuspid teeth in 27–36 mm SL; no white patch behind the pectoral-fin base in male, the nape and posterior half of the occipital region covered by cycloid scales, broad black band along the distal margin of the second dorsal fin in male, 11 or 12 dusky transverse bars laterally on the trunk and tail of female intersecting with the mid-lateral longitudinal band, several conspicuous black spots on each spine and soft ray on the first and second dorsal fins of female, the anal fin of female lacking remarkable marking, and the pectoral-fin rays with 2–5 and 1–4 black spots, respectively, for male and female. The patterns of use of marine and freshwater habitats by the tropical anguillid eels Anguilla marmorata and A. bicolor pacifica were examined by analysing the otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations of yellow (immature) and silver (mature) stage eels collected in Vietnamese waters. In A. marmorata, the change in the Sr:Ca ratios outside the high Sr:Ca core was generally divided into three patterns: (1) typical catadromous life history pattern; (2) constant residence in brackish water; and (3) habitat shifting between sea and brackish waters with no freshwater life. In A. bicolor pacifica, no eels had a general life history as freshwater residents. The eels were also divided into three patterns: (1) constant residence in sea water; (2) constantly living in brackish water; and (3) habitat shifting from brackish to sea water with no freshwater residence. The mean Sr:Ca ratio value after recruitment to coastal waters ranged from 1.73 to 5.67 × 10?3 (mean 3.2 × 10?3) in A. marmorata and from 2.53 to 6.32 × 10?3 (mean 4.3 × 10?3) in A. bicolor pacifica. The wide range of otolith Sr:Ca ratios in both species indicated that the habitat use of these tropical eels was facultative among fresh, brackish, and marine waters during their growth phases after recruitment to coastal areas. Tropical eel species may have the same behavioural plasticity as temperate anguillid species regarding whether to enter freshwater or to remain in estuarine and marine environments.  相似文献

Members of the teleost superorder Ostariophysi dominate freshwater habitats on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. Obligate benthic and rheophilic taxa from four different orders of the Ostariophysi (Gonorynchiformes, Cypriniformes, Characiformes, and Siluriformes) frequently exhibit thickened pads of skin along the ventral surface of the anteriormost ray or rays of horizontally orientated paired (pectoral and pelvic) fins. Such paired‐fin pads, though convergent, are externally homogenous across ostariophysan groups (particularly nonsiluriform taxa) and have been considered previously to be the result of epidermal modification. Histological examination of the pectoral and/or pelvic fins of 44 species of ostariophysans (including members of the Gonorynchiforms, Cypriniformes, Characiformes, and Siluriformes) revealed a tremendous and previously unrecognized diversity in the cellular arrangement of the skin layers (epidermis and subdermis) contributing to the paired‐fin pads. Three types of paired‐fin pads (Types 1–3) are identified in nonsiluriform ostariophysan fishes, based on differences in the cellular arrangement of the epidermis and subdermis. The paired‐fin pads of siluriforms may or may not exhibit a deep series of ridges and grooves across the surface. Two distinct patterns of unculus producing cells are identified in the epidermis of the paired‐fin pads of siluriforms, one of which is characterized by distinct bands of keratinization throughout the epidermis and is described in Amphilius platychir (Amphiliidae) for the first time. General histological comparisons between the paired fins of benthic and rheophilic ostariophysan and nonostariophysan percomorph fishes are provided, and the possible function(s) of the paired‐fin pads of ostariophysan fish are discussed. A new cave‐dwelling loach of the genus Triplophysa, T. xichouensis, is described from an outlet of a subterranean river in Xisa Town, Xichou County, Yunnan Province, China. It can be distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: dorsal‐fin rays iii, 8; anal‐fin rays ii, 6; pectoral‐fin rays i, 9 or 10; pelvic‐fin rays i, 5 or 6; branched caudal‐fin rays 16(8+8); eyes highly degenerated to a very tiny black dot; dorsal‐fin origin closer to snout tip than to caudal‐fin base and anterior to vertical line of pelvic‐fin origin; pectoral fin length about two‐thirds the distance between pectoral‐fin origin to pelvic‐fin origin; caudal peduncle slender, its length about three times its depth; caudal fin emarginate; body smooth and scaleless; lateral line complete and straight; anterior chamber of air bladder wrapped in dumbbell‐shaped bony capsule and the posterior one well developed, long, oval; intestine short, bending in zigzag shape behind stomach. A new pearleye species of the alepisauroid family Scopelarchidae, Scopelarchoides neamticus sp. nov., is described herein based on two specimens from the Oligocene Lower Dysodilic Shales Formation, cropping out in the Pietricica Mountain, Romanian Eastern Carpathians. The new species described herein exhibits a unique combination of features (including head length about 25% of SL; coracoid remarkably expanded; both preorbital and postorbital lengths larger than orbit diameter; 50 or 51 vertebrae; dorsal fin with nine or ten rays; anal-fin with 28 rays; length of anal fin base about 30% of SL; preanal distance almost 60% of SL; pelvic fin insertion located just under the second dorsal fin ray; pectoral fins only slightly longer than pelvic fins; caudal fin with 19 principal rays plus 14 upper and 13 lower procurrent rays) that justifies its recognition as a new species of the genus Scopelarchoides. Both morphological and meristic features suggest a certain degree of similarity between S. neamticus sp. nov. and the extant species Scopelarchoides signifer. The fossils of the new Oligocene species described herein represent the oldest known skeletal record of Scopelarchidae.  相似文献
